FENESTRATION LEADS SURGE – BUT INSTALLER SHORTAGE LEAVES OPPORTUNITIES UNCLAIMED

Leads 2 Trade is reporting a significant rise in consumer enquiries for windows, doors, conservatories, and conservatory roofs, defying wider industry talk of a slowdown in the fenestration sector.

The UK’s leading provider of double-qualified sales leads in the home improvement industry says homeowner demand has grown, fuelled by more enquiries across Leads 2 Trade’s multiple online channels.

“We’ve got more lead generation campaigns running than ever before,” said Andy Royle, Director and Co-founder of Leads 2 Trade. “That means more enquiries, from more homeowners, across more sources, which is fantastic news for installers who are ready to scale up and want to come onboard.”

However, a shortage of installation companies in certain postcodes means installers that want to scale up can take advantage.

“We work with installation companies of all sizes,” Andy explained. “From smaller local firms taking

just a handful of leads a week, to larger regional businesses handling hundreds of leads or appointments every single week. In some postcodes, demand is so strong that lead caps are being hit by the middle of a week. That means there are often high-quality, readyto-buy consumer leads and appointments left unclaimed heading into the tail end of the week and weekend.”

Leads 2 Trade is calling on ambitious installation companies, especially those with direct sales teams and capacity to take on higher lead volumes, to seize this opportunity.

“Thanks to our nationwide coverage, our installer members can pick the exact areas and postcodes they want to work in and choose from flexible lead volumes,” Andy said. “We’ve got hundreds of doublequalified leads available,

and we need more trusted installer partners to fulfil them.”

Installers joining the Leads 2 Trade network can choose from flexible lead packages including premium leads that are supplied with a confirmed appointment with accompanying time and date along with their unique “no pitch–no fee” guarantee, hot key telephone transfers, and standard double-qualified leads.

“Installation companies and home improvement businesses who want to grow their pipeline should act now,” Andy added. “There’s more business out there, they just need to be ready to take it.”

THE RIGHT PEOPLE READ GLASS NEWS

A NICE LITTLE EARNER ON THE SIDE?

When I sneak off for a crafty game of golf we are always commenting on the number of young to middle aged people on the course, which gives the rise to everyone exclaiming that they must be ‘working from home’!

Certainly, the whole working dynamic has changed since Covid with near empty offices proliferating, and the public sector having a whole array of buildings that could now be put to better use. But it isn’t just where anyone works that is changing that work dynamic: I read an interesting article about the ‘Rise of the Side Hustle’.

Apparently, the traditional 9 to 5 working day is not enough for millions of people and the stresses of the cost of living and the ever-rising influence of digital platforms is prompting a boom in side hustles and, rather than being a fringe activity it is fast becoming a full-blown career strategy.

In my full employment days, my contract of employment wouldn’t allow for such activities and would almost certainly have led to me being shown the door! Perhaps it is different nowadays although it would seem slightly unfair that the primary employer takes all the responsibility and cost of employment while the ‘side hustle’ is simply a nice little earner.

What surprised me most is figures quoted concerning just how rife this practice is: can it really be true that 61% of Gen Z and 55% of Millennials are actively earning from side hustles? It also states that 70% of those earning on the side are looking to turn their part time venture into a primary business and that 47% of UK Adults are considering launching a business, or hustle, this year? Of course, many people may not view activities such as selling on Vinted, Etsy etc. or dog walking, tutoring, or content creation on the likes of You Tube, as a side hustle….. it’s just an extension of a hobby or interest. One warning however, HMRC are on the case and, although the first £1,000 from a side hustle is, allegedly, tax free, anything after that needs declaring. I wonder if today’s Employment Contracts are drafted to allow employees to have additional jobs or earning potential?

I mentioned the issue of data leaks last month and we are well aware of companies within our industry that have suffered from cyber crimes and it certainly isn’t just the large multi nationals that have

"The traditional 9 to 5 working day is not enough for millions of people and the stresses of the cost of living and the ever-rising influence of digital platforms is prompting a boom in side hustles."

had attacks on their systems. Regrettably, it is doubtful whether anyone can be absolutely sure that their systems are secure and we are all reliant on technology and the internet in some way. Is there an answer? Probably not, apart from being as careful as you can be, but the truth is that whatever barriers you construct, there is someone out there working out a way to get round your defences!

We’re into that time of year when the great and the good in the fenestration industry are keeping one eye on the many award opportunities that are available while dusting off their party frocks and DJs ready to accept that well earned prize. It is very hard to trip out that old chestnut that it isn’t the winning: it’s the taking part, that counts. Everybody wants to be a winner and put that trophy in the cabinet and be able to use the fact that they are at the top of the pile in their advertising, social media or print that’s issued. However, it does sometimes make me think back to the days of the football pools when you put your crosses against the teams on your coupon that you reckoned would be a draw….the old ‘Perm any 8 from 10’. 8 chances to win from 10 entries. With all the different categories and the wide range of products and activities of many of our companies, putting an entry into every category has to give you a good chance of walking up to rostrum, amid the hearty applause, to accept at least one trophy!

Good luck to all! We all know how important it is to the staff of any undertaking when their hard work and skills are recognised and there is no doubt that winning ‘a pot’ has a direct effect on the atmosphere at work and gives everyone a boost.

PVCU DOORS: REIMAGINED

For many years, composite doors have dominated the entrance door market, offering high-end design, a wide choice of colours, and improved security and thermal efficiency. This has led to a standard in many retrofit projects: a full house of PVCu windows complemented by a composite front door. PVCu panel doors, meanwhile, have often been relegated to rear or side entrances, hidden from view where design details for kerb appeal are less critical.

While engineered PVCu doors are certainly not new to our sector, several limitations have prevented them from gaining traction. Historically, there has been a restricted colour range due to standard door panel manufacturing, and a "one size fits all"

approach to raised moulding details, which meant designs were rarely perfectly proportioned for varying door sizes. Plus, decorative glass options failed to match the standards offered by composite door counterparts.

The market was clearly ready for innovation. While collaborating with companies on new decorative glass ranges for their engineered door collections, we identified an opportunity. There was a strong demand for more decorative door panels with distinctive designs and a wider array of colours, specifically matched to existing PVCu system profiles, but available in smaller quantities. There was also a lack of marketing support to help installers and homeowners visualise the available door options.

With our new range of Engineered Door Components, we have completely reimagined PVCu doors. This comprehensive suite of decorative door elements includes flat, tongue and grooved, and raised and fielded door panels. These are now available in 78 standard and 100+ special order colour foil finishes, designed to suit most PVCu systems.

A key innovation is the panel design, which ensures a door with flawless balance, regardless of its size. The raised moulded areas are precisely distanced from the sides of the frame, guaranteeing perfectly proportioned and aesthetically balanced doors.

When these panels are paired with our decorative bolection mouldings and stunning glass options, fabricators gain all the necessary components to deliver the traditional aesthetics of timber doors, combined with the superior thermal performance, security, and low maintenance benefits of PVCu. This can all be achieved using existing manufacturing processes, eliminating the need for additional machinery or investment.

It presents a great new opportunity for installers, too. They can now offer homeowners more beautiful door design

options in a vast colour range, with the familiar ease of fitting a PVCu door.

We are also working closely with all our partners to provide extensive marketing support too, including comprehensive brochures showcasing all the design panel options, complete with glass design inspiration, to assist consumers in choosing the perfect door for their home.

It’s not just about delivering the individual components, it’s about collaborating with the entire supply chain to create the complete, packaged solution, to usher in this collection of reimagined PVCu doors. By Guy Hubble, Joint Managing Director at RegaLead

UK GLAZE RAISES THE QUALITY BAR WITH GERDA DOORS

UK Glaze Ltd has opened its doors on a new glass production unit with a showroom in Royston, featuring a premium Gerda door alongside its range of decorative glazing products such as splashbacks, mirrors, balustrading and wall panels. Director Mohammad Kaboutari has invested £400,000 in setting up the unit.

When Mohammad Kaboutari arrived in the UK he had just £27 in his pocket. But he also had something else more valuable – his skills and knowledge as a master glazier, learned alongside his father back in Iran.

This allowed him to eventually open up his first business –MK Glass on the Caledonian Road in London, which grew into Empire of Glass 18 months later as his reputation for quality workmanship and as a master glazier spread among property owners in the neighbourhood and beyond. As the business name grew, so did requests for related products, and Mohammad soon started supplying windows and doors.

And it was whilst running Empire Glass that Mohammad first came across the Gerda front door, which Pioneer Trading Company’s managing director Danny Williams had recently brought across to the UK from Poland back in 2023. Mohammad quickly became one of Pioneer’s top sellers of the Gerda door.

“My client base was becoming more demanding in their expectations around performance, safety and added value, and my existing door supplier just wasn’t delivering that level of quality that we wanted to sell,” said Mohammad. “Even though the Gerda doors were coming in at a slightly more expensive rate, my customers were loving them –the aesthetics, the enhanced security features, the lower U-values – and definitely the ‘thunk’.”

But more than that, the Gerda door appealed to the demographic of Mohammad’s core customer base – looking for premium decorative glazing products at the higher end of the market. This realisation came at a time when Mohammad and his brother were keen to concentrate their business on this more niche sector, leading to the decision to sell Empire of Glass as a going concern, and open a brand new business venture – UK Glaze Ltd.

“We reinvested everything we had in setting up this new unit,” continued Mohammad. “The glass factory has every piece

of kit we need to cut, process and transport the glass. And the showroom is evolving into a living, breathing example of what we can offer through our glass cutting services – from staircases and wall panels to bespoke furniture. The Gerda door sits proudly in the showroom as a focal point.”

The support Mohammad has received from Gerda has been instrumental in the transition out of central London to Royston, and Mohammad is consistently grateful for (and surprised by) the level of personal service he receives from Gerda.

“There are always going to be issues with suppliers no matter how brilliant they are, but it is by the quality of the response that we judge them,” continued Mohammad. “With previous door suppliers we have had problems on site which had evolved into weeks of going round in circles and leaving jobs half finished. On the rare occasion we have had an issue with a Gerda door, all it took was a phone call to Keith Arm (Gerda’s sales manager), and the missing piece was in a taxi en route to the installation site. It is for this reason that we feel completely confident in Gerda’s commitment to partnering with us in building UK Glaze into a premium home decoratives supplier to high end homes.”

“Gerda’s values always align with quality above all else, and when it meets an installation business with similar values everything just seems to slot into place – just as it did with UK Glaze,” added Pioneer’s managing director Danny Williams. “Mohammad is starting this new venture at the most challenging time economically, but in truth it is probably the best time in terms of building growth in the coming weeks and months. Pioneer values are based on a deep seated commitment to those who work hard, and we will be there to support Mohammad at every stage”.

Renowned for its commitment to quality and innovation, Origin has launched a brand-new sliding door – the OS-29+. This is not an updated version of the OS-29, but rather, a completely new sliding door system that combines unrivalled aesthetics with cutting-edge performance.

DESIGNED FOR PERFORMANCE

The new OS-29+ was carefully engineered by our in-house research and development team to deliver unmatched thermal performance. It is able to achieve U-Values as low as 0.78 W/m²K, making it the most thermally efficient aluminium sliding door on the market.

This not only meets current and future thermal regulations, but exceeds them too, giving installers and specifiers a premium quality option for customers looking to improve their home’s energy performance.

ULTRA-SLIM 29MM SIGHTLINES

Each door is fully bespoke to each project. With over 150 RAL colour choices to choose from, plus textured finishes, installers can offer homeowners a truly tailored solution.

For added peace of mind, it also comes with a guarantee of up to 20 years, ensuring long-term reliability.

THE RESIDENCE COLLECTION ENHANCES ANGLESEY

WEDDING VENUE WITH R7 AND R2 WINDOWS AND DOORS

October 2025: Overlooking the breathtaking Lligwy Beach and nestled near the ancient Iron Age settlement of Din Lligwy, a new luxury wedding venue, The Anglesey Barn, has been brought to life with design features that combine timeless heritage with modern design. This one-of-a-kind venue features windows and doors from The Residence Collection’s R7 and R2 systems, installed in partnership with fabricator M & G Windows and installer Dekko Windows.

Originally specified in aluminium, the development team transitioned to The Residence Collection after reassessing the design, performance and sustainability goals of the project. The R7 and R2 systems deliver the same clean, flush aesthetic associated with aluminium, while providing significantly improved thermal performance. With u-values as low as 1.2 W/m2K using double glazing, these products exceed current Building Regulations and reduce long-term energy demands - essential in a project aiming for luxury, comfort and sustainability.

Located on a working farm, the venue’s transformation is a tribute to the region’s rich agricultural and cultural history. Now, the beautifully restored Dutch Barn, accompanied by luxurious guest accommodations, has been designed to host weddings for up to 150 guests.

Every property on-site features Residence Collection R7 and R2 systems, finished externally in Eclectic Grey to

complement the timber cladding, and internally in Grained White to provide a clean, neutral interior perfect for personalised wedding décor. Despite the different functions and styles of the buildings, the use of shared design elements such as square beading and the Radlington cill ensures visual consistency and unity across the development. The interchangeable components across the Residence systems also helped streamline the fabrication and installation process.

The decision to use The Residence Collection was not purely aesthetic. All windows and doors meet PAS24 certification and comply with BS6375 Parts 1, 2 and 3, covering weather resistance, operational performance and structural strength. With a 75mm frame depth, the R7 system features seven chambers for improved thermal, acoustic and structural performance - far surpassing traditional three- or fivechamber systems. The R2 system complements this by offering the same flush external finish, but with a sleek internal square detail designed to replicate the modern look of aluminium.

Sustainability was also a driving factor in product selection. The windows and doors include reinforcement made from 100% recycled PVC, and the entire profile can be recycled up to 10 times, aligning with the project’s long-term sustainability goals.

While the bespoke nature and volume of the project introduced fabrication challenges, the schedule was met

through phased delivery and additional staffing. The first wedding has already been successfully hosted, marking the project’s transformation from derelict outbuildings to one of the UK’s most picturesque and thoughtfully designed wedding venues.

Tony Allen, Sales Representative at MG Windows comments: “The Residence Collection gave us the flexibility to preserve the charm and context of these historic buildings, while delivering a sleek, high-performance finish that suited our vision perfectly. This wasn’t just about aesthetics - it was about creating a lasting, sustainable space that honours the heritage of the site.”

Jo Trotman, Marketing Manager at The Residence Collection, commented: “This is a flagship project that showcases what can be achieved when heritage, design, and performance come together. The Anglesey Barn is not just a venue - it’s an experience, and we’re proud to have played a part in helping create something truly exceptional.”

The venue has already hosted its first wedding and continues to gain attention for its stunning coastal views, authentic restoration, and premium finish. The project exemplifies how The Residence Collection can add long-lasting value to bespoke, character-led developments.

ENDURANCE® DOORS SURPASSES 3000 TRUSTPILOT REVIEWS

In a highly competitive retail market such as home improvements it’s imperative to build trust with consumers, which is why Endurance® Doors is delighted to have received its 3000th online review – more than any other fabricator.

“Consumer spending remains tentative, and awareness of less scrupulous suppliers is increasing,” says Scott Foster, sales and marketing director at Endurance® Doors, “so more homeowners than ever are turning to online reviews for reassurance before they buy. That is why we have partnered with our installers to develop a strong online reputation.

“Reaching the 3000-review milestone on Trustpilot is a huge achievement but of course to help boost sales, they need to be positive! Of these 3000 independent consumer reviews Endurance® Doors has been awarded the maximum

five out of five stars by 88%. This puts us streets ahead of the competition as we are the only large-scale fabricator to achieve 5-stars, let alone achieve the highest rating in so many reviews.

“There are a few reasons our online rating is so high. The first is that we deliver excellent quality products that stand the test of time with their solid timber core, heat reflective foiled skins, high-end hardware and moisture barrier.

“Secondly, we can only achieve these ratings working with our Installer Partner Network. We only work with installation businesses that offer an exceptional customer experience. And finally, we maintain control over the distribution of our product to ensure our high standards are not compromised.”

Scott explains how its online reputation helps its installers: “Our online reputation is a potent sales tool that can be wielded by our Installer Partner Network. It helps to build trust with their homeowner customers, positions them as a business that sells great quality products and ultimately

increases their conversions and profit margins, and supports their growth.

“We want to see our installers sell more composite doors because their success feeds into the achievements of our own business.

“There are also a lot more challenges when it comes to selling to consumers now than there used to be, so we want to do everything we can to support our customers to grow their sales in the new landscape. This includes building a powerhouse of positive online reviews to develop trust and recognition in the brand, as part of our wider ‘Together, We Grow’ campaign.”

Offering three-sectional glazing, which seamlessly combines with the modern appeal of the flush door design.

• Elegant, modern flush aesthetics

• Available in any RAL colour

• Complemented with a choice of contemporary glass designs

• Suites with the TriSYS® Modern framing system

ALWAYS ON THE MOVE – WHY WE REFUSE TO STAY IN ONE PLACE

“At Distinction Doors, we’re incredibly proud of the support we offer,” says Andy Cadman, Associate Director of Technical. “Providing site support to all our customers is a clear sign that we’re leading the market. We’re confident in our products and technical expertise, and we’re eager to share that knowledge to help our customers grow their businesses.”

FIELD SUPPORT THAT GOES FURTHER

Operating within the Technical Department, our field support team is a

powerhouse of practical experience and technical know-how. These engineers don’t just troubleshoot- they train, diagnose, and resolve. Their mission is to empower fabrication customers with the tools and insights they need to succeed.

“Fixing doors is just the beginning,” Andy explains. “Our support is hands-on and educational. We believe that education is more valuable than simply repairing. When customers understand the ‘why’ behind a solution, they’re better equipped to deliver exceptional service themselves.”

This philosophy drives our commitment to best-in-class customer service. From on-site technical advice to tailored training sessions, we ensure our nationwide network of fabricators receives the support they need. Whether they’re new to Distinction or long-standing partners, every customer benefits from the same high standard of service - built on quality, knowledge, and skill.

“As many people know, we have a reputation for the quality of people at Distinction Doors. That’s especially true for our site

support engineers. When they’re on the road in our Distinction vans, they’re not just fixing problems; they’re representing our brand, and yet they manage to do that and so much more,” Andy adds.

Distinction Doors receives frequent praise from customers and even homeowners, who often comment on how friendly, knowledgeable, and approachable our support team is. We have a 4-star Google review for a reason, and this is because of the fantastic skill of team members, such as our technical team. “They’re a true testament to what we represent: human kindness mixed with expert knowledge and professionalism. It could be argued it’s the northern way,” Andy smiles, “but really, it’s our company culture. We treat each other with respect, and we extend that same warmth to everyone we work with.”

In our latest NPS survey, part of our ongoing commitment to delivering exceptional service, one customer shared this glowing feedback:

“There is always someone who can help. From especs to glass apertures, even accreditations. Our questions always get answered as soon as possible.”

This kind of praise, echoed by others who commend our ability to resolve any issue swiftly and thoroughly, is a powerful reflection of the expertise and responsiveness of our site support team. Their deep knowledge and unwavering dedication continue to make a real difference for our customers.

Distinction Doors offers a full-service experience that goes beyond technical support. Our in-house marketing team includes a dedicated graphic design service, providing bespoke brochure creation and access to a rich image library. These resources

FOCUS ON VALUE, NOT VOLUME

With margins tightening and competition intensifying, manufacturers are searching for ways to help installers hold their ground without eroding profit. For Apeer, the answer isn’t to cut prices in a race to the bottom, but to add real, tangible value instead.

In a market where price wars can strip the profit from even the best-run business, Apeer is taking a stand for a different approach. The Ballymena-based composite door manufacturer believes the route to sustainable success isn’t through discounts, but through delivering more – more features, more benefits and more reasons for customers to choose quality.

This autumn, Apeer is rolling out three seasonal promotions designed to give installers new ways to win orders while maintaining margins. But behind the promotions lies a wider message: that value creation – not price cutting – is the key to a healthy, resilient business.

“You can’t build a sustainable company by cutting your own legs from under you,” says Managing Director Asa McGillian. “It’s tempting in a tight market to slash prices to stay busy, but all that does is damage cash flow and create more pressure operationally. Our goal is to help installers add value at every stage, because that’s what keeps both businesses strong.”

ADDING INTEREST, NOT COST

The first of Apeer’s initiatives taps into a simple idea that’s proven a genuine hit with homeowners: its magnetic wreath holder system. First introduced at the 2023 FIT Show, the hidden magnets embedded in the door allow users to attach decorations or wreaths securely – no hooks, no holes, no damage.

For homeowners, the appeal is obvious: an elegant solution that maintains the pristine look of a premium composite door. For installers, it’s a talking point that helps build perceived value. And over the Halloween and Christmas period, Apeer’s promotion gives homeowners the wreath magnet upgrade free of charge – worth around £250.

“It’s been a real hit with consumers,” Asa explains. “We’ve seen people use the

magnets not just for wreaths, but for solar lights, banners, even birthday decorations. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference, and it’s a great example of how, when you can show homeowners thoughtful details like that, the price conversation becomes much easier.”

COLOUR AS A DIFFERENTIATOR

The second promotion focuses on colour, another area where Apeer sees growing demand for personalisation. The company

has added five new premium colours to its already broad palette: Ochre Yellow, Midnight Blue, Purple Red, Green Olive and Pebble Grey. Homeowners can now upgrade to these colours (inside and out, including frames and sidelights) at no additional cost – an offer worth up to £300.

“We spray everything ourselves,” Asa adds, “which gives us complete control over quality and consistency. But it also means installers can offer almost any colour the customer wants – door leaf, frame, trims,

everything – without relying on third-party finishing. It’s one more reason to choose Apeer over a manufacturer with limited options.”

SECURITY AND EFFICIENCY UPGRADES

Apeer’s third and most comprehensive promotion combines the first two offers and adds two significant technical upgrades: an A++ energy efficiency enhancement and a police-approved Secured by Design (SBD) package that includes laminated glass, K glass, and argon gas. The total potential value to the homeowner: £1,250.

For installers, this tiered structure allows flexibility. They can use the promotions as conversation-starters, combine them into premium packages, or use them to upsell at the quotation stage.

PLAYING THE LONG GAME

Asa stresses that the point of these promotions isn’t to drive short-term volume. Each of Apeer’s seasonal promotions offers a distinct and visible benefit to homeowners. But more importantly, together they represent a mindset shift – one that encourages installers to think long-term about profitability and brand strength.

“If you can sit in a customer’s home and explain the value built into every part of the product – the security, the thermal efficiency, the finish, even the small touches like the wreath magnet – you’re no longer competing on price. You’re selling quality and peace of mind.

“It’s about creating reasons for people to say ‘yes’ without resorting to cutting corners or prices. Because we all know what happens when you start cutting prices just to win the job. Margins disappear, cash flow tightens and the quality of service inevitably suffers. The companies that will come through the current market strongest are those that focus on value over volume – in product quality, in aftercare and in the small touches that make a homeowner feel they’re getting something special.”

NEWS AT THUNK!

The Gerda door brand is ideally positioned to respond to the trend for homeowners to buy less but pay more, said Pioneer’s managing director Danny Williams.

Here he outlines the company’s plans to drive brand recognition further through a nationwide advertising campaign, and why he believes showrooms should remain an integral part of your marketing strategy.

Apparently, there are 3247 showrooms in the UK. I scribbled that number down at the Glazing Summit recently but can’t for the life of me remember where it came from (credit to whoever came up with that figure).

Whether that number has gone up or down in recent years I’m not sure, but my guess is there will be more closures than openings over the next few months as the government’s latest budgetary tsunamis start their destructive rampages.

Showrooms need to be a viable part of your operations, but they should also be considered a vital part of your marketing strategy.

We love a showroom at Gerda. It is the perfect backdrop to demonstrate the reassuring performance of the Gerda door. Many of our trade partners report back to us that the door’s distinctive thunk is what often seals the deal for a homeowner when trying to decide between different door brands. A showroom gives space to the physical superiority of the Gerda door, its perfectly engineered structure, and its smooth and reassuring performance.

Your showroom is more than just a physical location. It should be regarded as a key element of your marketing mix – one that sits

alongside your website, and your social media channels. Our more successful trade partners have showrooms strategically opened in locations which encourage footfall and nurture interest in the same way that posting on Facebook and sending out emails do. That physical presence is crucial in developing the knowlike-trust element of the decision making process.

Since we first brought the Gerda brand to the UK market, we have concentrated on building a nationwide network of trusted trade partners, supporting them in building their knowledge and confidence around the Gerda door ranges.

It has also given us the opportunity to create and develop our Love the Thunk campaign – a strategy that has opened up the emotive and sensory cues

that are involved when selecting a front door. Current market indications show at the moment that people are taking longer to make decisions, but tend to buy higher value and better quality as an investment for their home. Performance, energy and aesthetics all play their part, and it is the emotional response to a product that it going to have the greatest sway, providing all those boxes are ticked.

The Thunk campaign has helped to give us a steady growth, and a committed base that is now hungry to push sales further. Consequently, we have made the decision to invest in nationwide TV advertising to help build the brand, push sales and secure orders.

Planning and preparation for filming are underway, hopefully with launch in time for a Christmas premier.

The story of the commercial will focus on the fact that the door “is not just a door. It’s the comfort of coming home.” And we will be building on the concept of the Gerda ‘thunk.’ Various family members will be featured returning home at different times of the day, with a focus on emotion, warmth, reassurance.

This will allow our installation partners to connect with potential customers on that emotional level, providing warmth and safety across the generations, fitting a legacy that will mark the comings and goings of a growing family, protecting the family, the property, the home –all punctuated with a reassuring ‘thunk’ with every close!

Emplas has been short-listed in the top Fabricator of the Year category at the G-Awards 2025.

EMPLAS SHORT-LISTED FOR FABRICATOR OF THE YEAR ROSEVIEW FINALIST FOR THE G25 FABRICATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD

Having won the Fabricator of the Year title in 2015 and 2021, it represents the fourth year in succession that Emplas has made the short-listing.

Ryan Johnson, Managing Director, Emplas Group, said that the short-listing was testimony to the hard work of the entire Emplas team and a reflection of the success of its customers.

“We invest a lot - in our manufacturing facility, in green energy, in IT and software innovations, and in product quality - but ultimately it’s the investment hat we make in our people and our partnerships with our customers and suppliers, that makes the real difference”, he said.

“The G-Awards for me are a celebration of our people, our customers and our supply partners. It’s their collective contribution to Emplas that makes us what we are today, and which will continue to shape our future.

“To be short-listed this year in the Fabricator of the Year category, alongside some other very good businesses, is a real achievement - but most importantly a collective one.”

Emplas has continued its investment-led strategy this year. In its latest effort to reduce its carbon footprint, 1558 new solar panels have been installed on the roof of its 57,000ft2 Wellingborough manufacturing hub, bringing total solar capacity to 701.1kW and saving 159 tonnes of CO2 per annum.

This is on top of the launch of a unique closed-loop recycling service in partnership with the Epwin Group and Saint-Gobain Glass, with projections to divert more than 300 tonnes of post-consumer PVC-U and 1,000 tonnes of glass per annum from the waste stream.

Emplas restructured its manufacturing facility at the start of this year, opened a second dedicated door facility and brought new products online including three new composite doors and a new fire door range.

Emplas has also continued the development of its own customer CRM and digital business management tool, EVA CRM, and launched new customer lead generation campaigns including its consumer platform, Snug, and the Commercial Window Group.

Ryan continued: “The G-Awards is unique in providing a platform to recognise the innovation and the contribution that our industry brings to the bult environment.

“We’re very proud to be back again this year as a finalist. I’d like to wish the very best of luck to all of the other finalists!”

Andy Meakin, Sales and Marketing Manager at Kenrick, said: “The G Awards recognise exceptional performance from the best companies in the industry. To be named a finalist at our very first entry is a fantastic achievement and testament to the strength of our team, our products and the customers who continue to put their trust in us.”

Established in 1791, Kenricks is the oldest hardware business in the industry. Known for iconic products including the Excalibur shootbolt, the company continues to shape the market with innovations such as the Maximus Inline espagnolette, which is designed for fabrication speed and versatility with dual reverseaction cams and a no-crop design, and the AK Touch Secure™ smart lock, a retrofit-ready solution offering app, fingerprint, keypad, fob and voice control that is already being adopted by major fabricators and hardware distributors.

These product launches, combined with a refreshed commercial strategy, new digital platforms and partnerships with leading names including Nova Group, Universal Composite Doors, Doorco and Carl F Groupco, have put Kenrick at the forefront of both traditional and smart hardware supply.

The company’s reputation for reliability, UK-based service, and a 98%+ OTIF delivery rate underpins everything it does, ensuring customers gain both a commercial advantage and peace of mind.

This year’s award winners will be announced on Friday 28 November 2025 at the London Hilton on Park Lane. Andy concluded: “We’re proud of our heritage, but even more excited about our future. This shortlisting reflects how our team and our customers are driving a new era for hardware supply, one that combines proven design with smart innovation. We congratulate our fellow finalists and look forward to celebrating the industry’s achievements together in November.”

Sash window specialist Roseview

Windows has been shortlisted as a finalist in the prestigious Fabricator of the Year category at the 2025 G Awards.

Formed in 1977, Roseview became the UK’s first fabricator to specialise in uPVC sash windows. Since then, the company has built a national reputation for innovation, authenticity and quality within the heritage window sector.

The nomination is the culmination of a five-year modernisation programme, which focused on investing in staff, facilities and systems to enhance capacity, quality, product performance and customer service.

During the qualifying period, Roseview released its new Emperor sash horn as part of a suite of three seamless runthrough horn designs. Emperor was launched at FIT Show 2025, alongside Roseview's first range of window trims in colours that are difficult to source elsewhere. In turn this was enabled by Roseview's acquisition of independent foiling company Foilit, bringing the flexibility and versatility of profile foiling in-house.

Roseview also launched its Trade Installation Partner scheme (TIPs), which provides installers with a range of free benefits including marketing resources, technical support and passive lead generation through a dedicated online hub. Alongside the launch of BM Touch, an online quoting and ordering platform with live pricing, these initiatives form part of the company’s broader digital transformation.

Commenting on the nomination, Roseview’s Managing Director Richard Burrells said: “The G Awards is always a highlight of the year for the fenestration industry, and to be nominated as a finalist is an honour.

"The last 18 months have been huge for Roseview." Richard continues. "Customer satisfaction drives everything we do, whether it's investment in our staff, factory and products, constant innovation, enhanced regulatory compliance or sales and marketing support. Everything is designed to help our customers succeed and grow.

“To be a finalist at our industry's leading awards is an accomplishment in itself," Richard concludes, "which is entirely down to the hard work and dedication of the staff here at Roseview. We are looking forward to the awards night in London and celebrating all of our industry's achievements."

HAFFNER NAMED AS FINALIST IN THE G25 AWARDS

Haffner has been named a finalist in the Machinery Innovation category at the prestigious G25 Awards, the fourth consecutive year the company has been recognised for its contribution to fabrication machinery excellence.

Matt Thomas, Haffner’s Managing Director, said: “We work hard to develop machinery that helps fabricators enhance quality, increase productivity and reduce costs. Award recognition such as this is a welcome endorsement of our approach, and we’re proud to have achieved four consecutive shortlists.”

This year, Haffner has been nominated for its SL8-FF-TR 8 Head CNC Welding Machine, the only machine in the world capable of seamlessly welding all four

corners of a PVC-U frame, along with two seamless timber-effect transoms, simultaneously in a single cycle. The process eliminates the need for cleaning or retouching, allowing fabricators to deliver consistently high-quality windows with improved efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

THE RESIDENCE COLLECTION SETS THE STANDARD FOR WINDOW AND DOOR INNOVATION AHEAD OF 2025 FUTURE HOMES STANDARD

As the window and door industry prepares for the full rollout of the Future Home Standard (FHS), The Residence Collection is leading the charge with a range of high-performance, design-led systems that are ready to meet - and exceed - the new regulatory landscape.

The FHS will require new homes in the UK to reduce carbon emissions by 75-80% compared to 2013 standards. A major part of this initiative includes tougher expectations for building componentsespecially window and doors - with stricter u-values of 1.2 W/m2K or lower, improved airtightness, better insulation and increased use of sustainable materials.

The Residence Collection is already ahead of the curve. Its product portfolio combines outstanding thermal performance, timeless heritage aesthetics and modern manufacturing, offering fully compliant systems that align with FHS targets - today!

Launched in 2011 with the pioneering Residence 9 (R9) window system, The Residence Collection redefined the timberalternative market. Since then, it has expanded into a full suite of energy efficient salutation with the addition of Residence 7

(R7) and Residence2 (R2), designed to meet the needs of both tradition and modern properties.

All three window systems meet or exceed the required 1.2 W/m2K u-values with double glazing as standard and even greater performance with triple glazing.

R9 achieves u-values as low as 0.74, while R7 delivers down to 0.79 W/m2K, with all systems achieving A++ energy ratings and excellent acoustic insulation.

Each collection is fully compliant with Part L and Part F of current building regulations and can include trickle vents and optional vent covers, making them ideal for conservation and listed buildings without compromising design.

Expanding its offering, The Residence Collection has recently launched a new open-in entrance door, available across the R9, R7, and R² systems. This timberalternative door is designed to match the aesthetics and performance of its windows, creating a truly unified look for any property.

The new door includes a chamfered open-in sash and is available in multiple configurations, including French doors. It supports both triple and double glazing at 28mm or 44mm thickness and delivers thermal performance in line with the Future Homes Standard. It is also fully PAS 24 and Secured by Design compliant, with rigorous weather and strength testing to meet BS6375 standards. The design features include a deep bottom rail, a bespoke 130mm mid-rail, and a patent-pending timber-look panel trim that hides the gasket line - offering a seamless and authentic timber appearance. Low threshold options are available for accessibility, and customers can select from a wide range of colour and hardware combinations to suit their aesthetic preferences.

As the industry adjusts to the Future Homes Standard, The Residence Collection is showing what’s possible when performance

ASWS EXTENDS LIFE OF HARDWOOD WINDOWS

ATOP IKEA’S NEW OXFORD STREET STORE

As arguably the best-known retailer of timber furniture across Europe and beyond, Ikea takes its environmental responsibilities; these include the sustainable sourcing of materials, very seriously.

It is fitting, therefore, that the creation of the company’s latest store in the UK has featured the conservation of 14 large hardwood windows which had been exposed to the worst of the weather for more than a century.

The Swedish chain’s ESG commitments focus on three key areas - Health & Sustainable Living, Climate, Nature & Circularity. It follows that the carefully considered in-situ repair of these mansard frames by fenestration repair specialist, Associated Steel Window Association (ASWS), offers a respectful resonance. As the London-based contractor has proved on previous projects, such as the conversion of the nearby County Hall, avoiding replacement often delivers the lowest impacts.

In the case of 214 Oxford Street, the Northeast segment of the famous four Oxford Circus landmark buildings, ASWS was initially called in by Avison Young, the client’s representative, to carry out a full condition survey of the steel, timber and street level bronze windows which surround the structure. Then when it began work for main contractor McLaren Construction in early 2023 as the scaffolding went up, all the areas of concern highlighted in the lengthy report were proved to have resulted from serious water ingress; both through the Portland Stone façades and other weaknesses such as failed asphalt.

With up to 50 personnel on site at any one time, ASWS deployed all of its tradecraft on the project, including the skilled team of carpenters, glaziers, fitters and painters directly involved up on Level 5 of the building which will now be let as highspec offices. And, although there was a level of decay due to the weather and poor maintenance down the years, ASWS was confident from early on that the mix of side hung casements set within fixed lights could be given a new lease of life. In the worst cases the carpenters were forced to splice in new timber sections where the old

and design are prioritised together. From period restorations to contemporary new builds, the brand continues to support its fabricator and installer network with regulation-ready, aesthetically driven solutions. Homes of the future will demand more - but The Residence Collection is already there, offering products that are net-zero ready, built to last, and crafted for modern living.

“The Future Homes Standard is not just a legislative shift - it’s an opportunity to elevate what we deliver as an industry,” said Sarah Hitchings, Sales and Marketing Director at The Residence Collection. “Our systems are already exceeding the performance targets, while offering timeless design and a genuinely maintenance-free experience for modern living.”

hardwood had become badly rotted. Many of the sills also needed replacing where they had sat in water for years.

Mainly measuring 1.6m wide by 2.7m high, though some were 3.7m long, the ageing wooden windows were also close to floor level and reached up into the eaves. While the actual frames remained in place, ASWS demounted the sashes so that they could be stripped and repaired in its compact workshop set up on site. This stage of the work included routing in new weather seals as a straightforward but significant energy saving measure. Once the conservation work was complete, any broken glass was replaced along with a switch to safety glass along all the lower sections. The reglazing was carried out using security tape and then a silicone top cap bead applied externally. Internally the original solid timber beads were refitted. In addition, all of the hinges were replaced while the rest of the ironmongery was buffed and polished before being reinstalled.

Impressively, the client and its project team have targeted a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ for this ambitious retail refurbishment: requiring every aspect of its environmental performance to be evaluated. So, while 214 Oxford Street benefits from being located

on three Tube lines as well as multiple bus routes, and air source heat pumps have replaced conventional gas boilers, attaining the highest environmental standard requites many small wins to raise performance. Accordingly, working to conserve and upgrade the energy performance of existing fenestration, rather than installing new, earns valuable points.

Peter Jelkeby, CEO and chief sustainability officer for Ikea UK, said: “We have worked carefully to ensure we maintain the character of this historic building whilst creating a modern retail environment for customers to explore and be inspired. Ikea Oxford Street’s location complements our network of stores in London – and beyond – and allows us to be closer to where our customers live, work and shop, while importantly being easily accessible by foot or public transport.”

the opportunities the complexity of the buildings can present.

Within Buildings 19 and 41, ASWS was tasked with refurbishing over a dozen large steel windows, including 10 with semi-circular heads, and the removal of three others where the openings were to be blocked up or replaced by new doors. While the company’s operatives are well experienced at demounting very old windows without damage, these posed a particular challenge in that the outer frames had been deeply recessed into the brickwork to help withstand a possible explosion, from inside or outside, with the history of the building and its location.

The 12 windows measuring 2,400mm high by 1,500mm were removed to the London premises of ASWS for careful grit-blasting and the replacement of many heavily corroded sections. This reuse rather than the building industry’s default of recycling old metal offered the client significant cost savings and helped maintain the integrity of a truly historic complex which dates back to the end of the 17th century.

A GLASS ACT AT WEST LOTHIAN COLLEGE

JB Glazing Solutions, a wellestablished name in the Scottish glazing industry with over 50 years of experience, is no stranger to complex retrofit projects. Led by Managing Director James Boyce and Operations Director Jim Walker, the company has built a reputation for delivering high-quality, energy-efficient window solutions across a range of commercial and residential developments.

In February 2024, Jim and James were tasked with replacing inefficient, outdated aluminium windows for a half-block on campus at West Lothian College. It was a project commissioned by the Board of the College, coordinated through engineering services firm Ameresco, and delivered by JB Glazing Solutions, to a tight deadline. All work needed to be wrapped up during the February half-term to avoid disrupting classes and ensuring continuity of business. This involved completion of all internal work, external frame removals and new window installations, all of which was delivered with attention to detail.

This is no small feat. The windows being removed were large, cumbersome, and not exactly cooperative. Every replaced frame needed to come out cleanly, and every new one slotted in with care, all while meeting strict council thermal performance standards. That included achieving a whole window U-value of 1.2W/m²K and replicating the look of the original windows to preserve the building’s character. It was a balancing act of performance and aesthetics, against sustainability and efficiency.

THE RIGHT FIT FOR THE FRAME

This is where REHAU products excel. Known for its network of authorised installers, the polymer solutions supplier

was Ameresco’s go-to advisor in selecting the right partner for this project. For Samsara McDonald, Commercial Sales Manager at REHAU UK, the choice was obvious. JB Glazing Solutions had already proven themselves on multiple occasions – most recently fitting REHAU frames in affordable housing projects across Glasgow – and their track record spoke volumes.

“We’re often asked to recommend installers for commercial projects,” she says. “But we only ever put forward companies we trust completely to deliver top-quality work. As an approved REHAU commercial installer, JB Glazing Solutions fit the bill – they’re experienced, reliable, and genuinely care about what they do. I knew they’d be a perfect choice for this job.”

After visiting a couple of sites with Ameresco and getting the go-ahead to submit pricing, Jim, James, and Samsara rolled up their sleeves and formalised the college’s specification. Together, they mapped out window solutions for West Lothian College that would tick all the boxes – energy-efficient, low-maintenance, and seamless integration with other ongoing works, including new cladding and air source heat pump installations.

“We’ve worked with REHAU in one way or another for over 40 years, and they’ve always delivered,” says Jim. “From the service to the technical support, it’s always been spot on. So, for us, it’s simple – use reliable, high-quality products.

“Honestly, when you walk into a meeting with a client and the manufacturer’s right there beside you, it sends a message. It shows commitment. I’m not sure how common that is in the industry, but it’s something REHAU does really well. The frames Samsara and her team suggested were exactly what we needed, and once we had the specification confirmed and approved, we got started.”

With performance and practicality front of mind, REHAU recommended the TOTAL70R fully reversible system for the project. The system met the project specification for a whole window U-value of 1.2W/m²K, helping to improve the building’s overall energy efficiency.

Its reversible design made it easier to clean and maintain – an important consideration

for a college setting where access can be limited. The choice also supported the need for a consistent external appearance, with profiles in an elephant grey foil that could closely match the look of the original aluminium frames while offering the longterm durability of uPVC.

NO DISRUPTION, JUST DEDICATION

For a project of this scale and complexity, the TOTAL70R offered a reliable, wellrounded solution. Frames were supplied by Baillieston-based fabricator Made for Trade Windows, JB Glazing Solutions were able to carry out the required works to the agreed deadline.

The success of the initial installation didn’t go unnoticed. Impressed by how Jim and James handled the project, Ameresco brought JB Glazing Solutions back for more. What began as a half-block retrofit soon expanded to include two full blocks, with the team returning over the Easter and summer break to carry out the expanded project.

Though the deadlines were tight and the scope had grown, JB Glazing Solutions were able to keep the growing project on track. Around 360 windows have now been installed in total, in three-frame bay window configurations. Alongside the window works, Jim and James also undertook some remedial work to ensure the project stayed on track. According to Bianca Brand, Senior Project Manager at Ameresco, it was this level of care and consistency that stood out.

“They were one of the most reliable subcontractors I’ve worked with,” says Bianca. “Window installations can be disruptive and messy, but the JB Glazing Solutions team kept things tidy and coordinated well with the cladding crews working alongside them.

“Any issues that came up were dealt with quickly during the snagging process, and their part of the project was delivered ontime and without fuss. They were easy to work with, professional throughout, and clearly take pride in what they do. I’d be more than happy to work with them again. Honestly, it was almost too good to be true.”

A LESSON IN LOGISTICS

With discussions underway to renovate the final three blocks at West Lothian College, JB Glazing Solutions’ involvement on campus may yet continue. The company’s partnership with REHAU has also grown stronger through the course of the project, which Jim puts down to the reliability of the product itself.

“I’ve worked with a lot of different profiles over the years, and REHAU stand out,” he says. “You notice it during installation, it’s just easier to work with. On a job like this, where you’re coordinating with multiple trades and working to tight deadlines, quality makes a big difference.

“This project came together well from all sides. From working with Bianca and the college team, to receiving the fabricated frames from Made for Trade Windows, and having REHAU’s support throughout, it all ran smoothly. When you’ve got the right products and the right people, it shows in an end result like this.”

A GREAT SASH WINDOW IS MORE THAN

A SUM OF ITS PARTS

True authenticity comes from a blend of heritage styling and modern performance.

Single features may grab attention, but a true heritage sash window is designed to ensure the seamless integration of all its parts.

Everything has to work together: slim overlapping putty-line profiles, a 35mm midrail, heritage chalk finishes, seamless ornate sash horns, true mechanical joints, deep cills and innovative balance chamber covers, to name but a few.

Add to that a 1.2 W/m2k u-value without specialist glass, and you have a true conservation-grade sash window with outstanding modern performance.

Only Roseview’s Ultimate Rose sash window delivers all this. Because it’s more than a sum of its parts.

CO MANUFACTURING MARKS 20 YEARS IN STYLE WITH A SPECTACULAR GALA DINNER IN ATHENS

CO Manufacturing, the new name for Conservatory Outlet, and its Network of Premium Retailers raised a toast to their ongoing success at the fabricator’s annual Gala Dinner weekend.

Held this year in the historic city of Athens, key stakeholders and their partners enjoyed a weekend in the Greek capital, culminating in the now-traditional black-tie awards ceremony.

With the sun setting over the Athenian Riviera, guests were recognised for their individual and collective achievements over the past twelve months, whilst also having the opportunity to learn about the Wakefield-based fabricator's plans for the coming year.

The year’s ceremony was held at Ploes, a unique floating venue that provided attendees with breathtaking panoramas across the Saronic Gulf, with the iconic Acropolis visible in the distance.

After soaking in the sunset from the top deck, guests went below deck to enjoy a gourmet four-course dinner, keynote speech, awards ceremony and a private after-party.

There was certainly no sinking feeling amongst the group, as CO Manufacturing’s CEO, Greg Kane, used his opening speech to reflect on the CO Network’s growth from a small regional collective to a nationally recognised group featuring leading retailers from across the United Kingdom.

“Our annual Gala Dinner weekend brings out the very best of the CO Network. It’s a chance to recognise everyone’s achievements over the past year, welcome new members and reflect on what makes this group so special. After 20 years, the spirit of collaboration and excellence is stronger than ever.”

The evening combined a look back at that remarkable progress. But there was also an eye firmly on the present and future of the company. Guests learned about the wildly successful roll-out of the manufacturer’s Ultimate Sales Pitch training programme for its Forté composite door collection – backed by a six-figure marketing campaign – and how it will evolve to include other exclusive product ranges. During the main speech, attendees also learned of the fabricator’s continued investment in product development and that its flagship Extreme collection of UPVC windows and doors will be undergoing a substantial re-launch in early 2026, complete with brand-new and exclusive security features.

But the evening was first and foremost about celebrating the retailers at the heart of the CO Network. Lincoln-based James Oliver Conservatories were recognised for being part of the CO Network for 15 years, whilst Mitchell Glass, Scotland’s oldest double glazing firm, were honoured for reaching the remarkable milestone of 150 years in business.

The Home Network Group were also formally welcomed into the CO Network through its Pennine Home Improvements brand, further cementing its position as the largest retail installer in the North East of England.

Several retailers were presented with Customer Service Awards after achieving industry-leading Google and Trustpilot scores of 4.8 stars and above. The ceremony was capped off with the CO Network Awards, which once again provided a platform to showcase the best installations across windows, doors and living spaces, with 5 Star Windows, Ecofit, Hazlemere and Permaframe being recognised.

“CO Manufacturing and the CO Network are built on both business and friendship,” said Greg Kane, the fabricator’s CEO.

“This weekend in Athens was about celebrating both. We are humbled by the support of our retailers and proud of the standards they set. As we look to the future, our commitment to innovation, investment and partnership remains constant.”

CO Manufacturing Managing Director Mick Giscombe added: “Our annual Gala Dinner weekend brings out the very best of the CO Network. It's a chance to recognise everyone’s achievements over the past year, welcome new members and reflect on what makes this group so special. After 20 years, the spirit of collaboration and excellence is stronger than ever.”

The evening closed with a toast to the next 20 years of CO Manufacturing and its Premium Retailers - a fitting finale to a weekend of celebration in one of Europe’s most historic cities.

SMART PROTECTION FOR VULNERABLE RESIDENTS

Installers and fabricators are used to thinking about windows and doors in terms of performance, aesthetics, and compliance but there’s a rapidly growing topic of differentiation to consider. Assisted by the growing number of smart solutions available it’s becoming increasingly important to consider how window and door products can actively protect the people who live behind them.

This is especially true when it comes to elderly residents—whether they’re living independently, in assisted housing, or in care homes. With the UK’s ageing population growing rapidly, the need for homes that support safety, comfort, and independence is becoming a priority and smart technology is stepping up to meet that need.

One solution that’s gaining traction is Sense by MACO—a discreet, wireless sensor system that turns windows and doors into intelligent guardians of the home. It’s simple to install, invisible once fitted, and capable of delivering real-time alerts and insights that can make a genuine difference in people’s lives.

Take, for example, a care home where a resident with early-stage dementia occasionally becomes confused at night. Staff might not notice if someone quietly opens a door and steps outside at 3am but with a Sense sensor fitted to that door, an alert is triggered the moment it’s opened— allowing staff to respond immediately. It’s a small piece of technology, but it can prevent a major incident.

Or consider an assisted living building during winter. A resident opens a window to get some fresh air and forgets to close it. The heating system keeps running, wasting energy and creating discomfort. With Sense by MACO, the open window is detected, and the system can either alert staff or

trigger a routine to adjust the heating. It’s a smart way to maintain climate control and optimise energy use.

Even in private homes, the benefits are clear. Families often worry about elderly relatives living alone. Sense by MACO allows them

“Sense by MACO is compatible with the Matter smart home standard, meaning it integrates seamlessly with other devices. It’s batterypowered, easy to retrofit, and designed to be future-proof.”

to check the status of doors and windows remotely, offering peace of mind without being intrusive. If a door hasn’t been opened by a certain time in the morning, it could prompt a gentle welfare check. If a window is opened at night, they’ll know instantly. For fabricators and installers, this opens up a new conversation with customers. It’s no longer just about the physical product—it’s about what that product can do. Sense by MACO is compatible with the Matter smart home standard, meaning it integrates seamlessly with other devices. It’s batterypowered, easy to retrofit, and designed to be future-proof.

And while the technology is smart, the installation isn’t complicated. That’s a win for installers who want to offer added value without adding complexity. It’s also a chance

to differentiate your offering—especially when working with developers, housing associations, or care sector clients.

The over-65s are more tech-savvy than ever. According to the Samsung Smart Home Buyers Index, a growing number of older adults are embracing smart devices, with many citing security and energy efficiency as key motivators. They’re not just catching up—they’re actively seeking out solutions that make their homes safer and more comfortable.

Sense by MACO fits perfectly into this landscape. It’s not about flashy gadgets—it’s about meaningful protection. It’s about helping people live independently for longer, with dignity and confidence. And it’s about giving families and carers the tools they need to support their loved ones.

As the demand for inclusive, intelligent homes continues to grow, smart solutions like Sense by MACO will become a standard expectation. For those of us in the window and door industry, now is the time to embrace it—not just as a product, but a way to make a real difference.

If you would like to know more about how to supply and fit Sense by MACO contact MACO at enquiry@macouk.net.

THERMLOCK®: HIGH-PERFORMANCE U-VALUES, SIMPLE PART L COMPLIANCE, & TRANSPARENCY

The industry has once again turned its attention to U-values and energy efficiency – is it the time of year? Or the fact the Future Homes Standard is back on everyone’s radar? It could be a combination of both factors. At Sheerline, U-values are important to us year-round, not just when the industry is facing scrutiny.

So, how can we offer high-performance thermal efficiency and easy Part L compliance? It’s through our award-winning proprietary technology, Thermlock®, which will be the focus of this article. We’ll explain everything you need to know, from why it was developed, to the benefits it offers, our transparent U-value reports, and more.

IN THE BEGINNING…

In the past, many systems houses opted to use polyamide to create a ‘thermal barrier’ to prevent heat loss. The way to create this barrier traditionally stemmed from a process of simply cutting into aluminium profiles and joining the two sides with polyamide.

The process seemed like an afterthought born out of necessity, rather than invention. While it was a suitable solution for a time, when the UK government announced its Zero Net Strategy in 2021, it became clear systems houses needed to develop a new solution that would overcome the inherent limitations of polyamide and the industry’s reliance on it.

From the very beginning, Thermlock® was launched as part of the Sheerline system

as a built-in thermal core. It was a key consideration when Sheerline was being developed as the team understood the need to offer something unique.

Something that would encourage fabricators to buy-in to the vision and start selling the benefits. Thermlock® is very much a part of this solution, not only designed to offer simple Part L compliance and a better option than polyamide, but also to stand up against more stringent legislation that is likely to be enforced in the future.

THERMLOCK® IN DETAIL

Sheerline’s unique multi-chambered thermal break technology sits at the heart of every product and is made using a special formulation with a high melting point. It’s half as thermally conductive as polyamide and allows for wider, integrated one-piece designs, adding rigidity.

When any Sheerline product from either the Classic or Prestige range is paired with high-performance double or triple glazing, it creates a thermal barrier that reduces heat transfer. This ensures homes and buildings

are insulated against the worst of the UK’s weather.

Another clever attribute of Thermlock® is that it enables windows to be fixed through the thermal break. The result of this is that installers can fit at the ideal point to an aperture. The fact that the inner and outer components are put together by us in-house also reduces lead times.

In addition, Sheerline’s cills, ancillaries, and corner posts also feature this same technology combined with innovative inbuilt weather sealing that keeps draughts and rain safely outside. But it’s not just our windows and doors that benefit from Thermlock®…

THERMLOCK® IN ACTION

Using Thermlock® technology ensures every Classic and Prestige product complies with Part L regulations. And because part of the key driving force behind Sheerline was to develop products that achieve straightforward compliance, everything achieves 1.4 U-values with standard double glazing.

This is thanks to a recent update to the Classic window range in the form of a selfadhesive Q-Lon glazing seal. It offers ultralow thermal transmittance and is subtly concealed within the glazing chamber under the glazed unit.

But it’s not just Sheerline’s windows and doors that benefit from Thermlock®. It has also been included in the S1 Roof Lantern to increase the thermal performance of what has traditionally been a product associated with heat loss.

In addition, the newest product to be launched as part of the S Roof Series – the S3 Architecturally Glazed Roof – also benefits from Thermlock® technology. This has enabled the S3’s rafter bars to be 230% better insulated when compared to a traditional conservatory roof.

COMMITMENT TO U-VALUES

As a company committed to operating in an open and transparent way, Sheerline has made publicly available as much information as possible as to how its U-value reports have been calculated and where they can be viewed.

For example, Sheerline’s reports are calculated to EN14351 and BRFC standards, at the prescribed sizes and tested against a realistic combination of profiles and glazing that customers are likely to use.

As well as having two BRFC accredited thermal simulators in house, Sheerline also gets its U-value reports independently verified, and they’re freely available to download via the website*. Although this should be the industry gold standard, not all systems houses offer this level of transparency. To speak to a reliable systems house that actually delivers thermal efficiency, innovation, and new ways of thinking, contact the Sheerline team on 01332 978000 or email: info@sheerline.com.

SHEERLINE SPECIFIED BY RHINO ALUMINIUM FOR HERITAGE RENOVATION IN EASTRY, KENT

A property in Eastry, Kent, has undergone a sensitive upgrade thanks to the addition of Sheerline’s Classic Heritage Door. The project is the result of a collaboration between fabricators Rhino Aluminium and installers DirectFix Glazing Contractors.

Due to the age and location of the property, authentic heritage styling was a must. The homeowners opted for the doors to be finished in Brun 2650 Sable – Metallic Texture to compliment the zinc cladding. This consistency creates an architecturally refined aesthetic in keeping with the area.

Steven Elliott, Director, DirectFix Glazing Contractors, said: “I’ve worked with Sheerline products a lot – they’re engineered so well, and I can see the thought that goes into them.”

When asked about the project, Jordan King, Rhino Aluminium’s Order Processing Manager, Production Controller, and CAD Designer, said: “The Classic Heritage Door has been our standout product. Customers love its slim sightlines, traditional styling, and modern performance. It’s the perfect blend of heritage and innovation.”

Since becoming a Sheerline fabricator three years ago, the partnership between Sheerline and Rhino Aluminium has flourished. This is in part because both company’s values align, placing an emphasis on innovation, sustainability, UK manufacturing, and high-quality products.

Jordan continued: “Working with Sheerline has been a great experience from day one. Their products are innovative, well-engineered, and they’re supported by a team that understands what fabricators need – it’s a partnership that makes a real difference to our business.”

As a system designed with fabricators and installers in mind, working with Sheerline has provided Rhino Aluminium with tangible benefits. Jordan explained: “Our customers get premium, installerfriendly products with outstanding thermal efficiency and modern styling.”

For Rhino Aluminium, the core Sheerline products the company supplies alongside the Classic Heritage Door are the S1 Roof Lantern, the Prestige Lift & Slide Patio Door, and the Prestige window system. The latter was recently specified for a commercial project in Ramsgate.

Jordan said: “We recently supplied the Prestige system for two blocks of flats on the former gas works site local to us in Ramsgate. The system’s strength, thermal performance, and design flexibility made it the perfect choice for this largescale development.”

AN ICONIK NEW BIFOLD FROM ALUK

IconiK is the brand new bifold from AluK – designed to give fabricators and installers a new way to win strong margin business in bifolds and successfully defend themselves from the damaging race to the bottom on price.

Elegantly minimalist with a premium look and feel, IconiK is the latest addition to AluK’s already ‘iconic’ doors range and showcases all the company’s trademark engineering quality and design innovation.

Technical Director Paul Booth, who was responsible for much of the design says the new door represents the culmination of a true ‘less is more’ approach.

He said: “What makes IconiK stand out in design terms is the fact that there is less frame than other bifolds, with sightlines of just 87mm on the IconiK Slim.

“In fabrication terms, what AluK customers will value just as much is that there is less

“Our less is more approach extends to installation of the IconiK as well. The bifold comes with our hugely popular Quik Clip™ glazing bead as standard which saves fitting teams valuable time on every installation, as well as a full range of sub-cills which make it easy to install in almost any property.”

profile stockholding required because they can create double and single doors from the same outerframe and just change the sash for either the IconiK Standard or the IconiK Slim. And there are less parts to be ordered and managed because all configurations of the door use just one gasket and one extendable lock and keep system.

“That adds up to less money tied up in stock and ultimately less time spent fabricating because we have also included dual alignment corner cleats for both sash and frame throughout.

“Our less is more approach extends to installation of the IconiK as well. The bifold comes with our hugely popular Quik Clip™ glazing bead as standard which saves fitting teams valuable time on every installation, as well as a full range of sub-cills which make it easy to install in almost any property.”

With IconiK, AluK proudly boasts that it has achieved the minimalist design that retail buyers want alongside a raft of fabricator and fitter friendly features, but without any compromises being made on performance, functionality or sustainability.

In terms of thermal performance, for instance, the new door easily meets the requirements of Part L, with fully accredited test results and transparent performance figures all calculated to the EN14351 and

BFRC sizes. Double glazed using Ug 1.0 W/ m²K glass, the IconiK achieves U-Values of 1.3W/m²K and triple glazed it achieves U-Values of just 1.0W/m²K.

Crucially, these figures are achieved without any requirement for fabricators to fit insulating foams and with all PVC eliminated from the product, ensuring that IconiK delivers true cradle-to-cradle recyclability.

When it comes to functionality, updated compact rollers mean the door opens smoothly and slides effortlessly with

panels up to 130kg, and there is even a new half roller available which eliminates the need for a floating mullion. There is also multi-point locking as standard with optional shoot bolts for full PAS24/SBD accreditation.

AluK is offering the IconiK in both open in and open out configurations and with maximum 2400 x 1200 panel sizes, and with the option to configure it as a French door for maximum sales opportunities.

AluK’s Managing Director Russell Yates commented: “Aluminium bifolds are still on lots of buyers’ wish lists and our BSF70 remains one of our best-selling products, but the market has been consistently undermined over recent years by suppliers underselling their own products. With IconiK, we’ve tackled that head on and created a brand-new system which is cost effective to fabricate and install, but easily justifies its price tag with slimmer frames, larger glass to frame ratios, effortless opening and minimal visible hardware. We think that’s a winning combination for our customers.”

ENDURANCE® ALUMINIUM TARGETS INCREASED SALES FOR INSTALLER PARTNERS

Endurance® Aluminium is building on its commitment to maximising the success and growth of its installer partners.

Having recently unveiled an online configurator for its range of bifold doors, the fabricator of aluminium windows, doors and internal screens has now launched a new heritage door designer (http://endurancealuminium.co.uk/ heritage-door-configurator).

The latest introduction further strengthens the already impressive arsenal of sales tools the business offers its UK-wide customer base.

Scott Foster, Group Marketing Director at Endurance, comments: “As a progressive, customer-centric organisation, we’re always looking for new and innovative ways to support our installers and to help them increase both order volumes and margins.

“Recognising that most buying journeys now start online, we continue to invest heavily into digital assets alongside other offline collateral such as showroom materials and brochures.

“Web-based door designers in particular remain a highly effective means of lead generation because they create excitement and sales momentum.

“They enable consumers to get inspired and to begin picturing the possibilities of their new and stylish addition to their home.”

The new Endurance® Aluminium heritage door designer allows users to explore the fabricator’s single and double heritage door products alongside a variety of sidelight, toplight and decorative bar options.

Once users are happy with their overall selection, they can then experiment further

with different internal and external colours as well as alternative hardware choices until they find an exact combination that suits their vision, aspirations and tastes.

The door designer also makes it easy for consumers to request a quote for their chosen configuration. All leads generated via this method will be distributed by Endurance® Aluminium to installer partners who are local to the source of the enquiry. This complements wider lead generation activity being carried out by the fabricator on behalf of its installer partners which includes social media and digital marketing as well as TV advertising.

Endurance® Aluminium is also offering installers the ability to feature the new heritage door designer on their own websites. These versions can be customised with the installer’s branding.

NEW DIGITAL MARKETING CAMPAIGN SUPPORTS INSTALLERS’ SUCCESS

Endurance® Aluminium is investing into a new digital marketing campaign to generate additional leads and sales for its installer partner network.

The new campaign, which will run for the foreseeable future, employs a range of activity including search engine marketing, online PR, email marketing and social media marketing. It also harnesses the market penetration and reach of a number of different channels and platforms including Google, Facebook and Instagram.

Scott Foster, group marketing director at Endurance, explains: “The launch of our new digital marketing campaign closely follows the introduction of our new Endurance® Aluminium installer partner scheme.

“We’ve run a similar scheme for Endurance® Doors for many years and it’s proved

immensely effective in ensuring mutual success both for us and for our installer customers.

“Based around an ethos of ‘Together, we grow’, it offers these important partners market leading levels of support in a range of different areas to help them grow their sales, their profits, their reputation and, ultimately, their business.”

Reflecting this, the launch of the new Endurance® Aluminium digital marketing campaign is just one of numerous ways in which the fabricator of aluminium windows, doors and internal screens is working to deliver commercial benefits and added value for its installer partners.

The business also offers access to specialist training and to sales and marketing resources that include product samples, showroom materials and custom-branded literature.

The new digital marketing campaign will augment Endurance Aluminium’s existing lead generation activity. This already includes TV advertising, a ‘Find an installer’ feature on the fabricator’s website and other online tools such as configurators that enable people to customise their own heritage and bifold doors before requesting a quote.

Currently, this lead generation activity sees the fabricator distribute hundreds of warm leads on a weekly basis to installers local to the source of the enquiry.

Scott adds: “Across the Endurance Group, we have a genuine partnership approach and believe in giving our installers everything they need to succeed. That means not only offering them high quality

SENIOR ARCHITECTURAL SYSTEMS NEW CIRCULARITY RECYCLING SCHEME TAKES SHAPE

Senior Architectural Systems, one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of aluminium fenestration solutions, is set to introduce a new waste reduction initiative as part of its commitment to circularity and working towards a fully closed-loop recycling process.

The new initiative will see all polyurethane foam waste generated during the manufacture of the patented thermal break in Senior’s low U-value PURe® aluminium windows and doors collected and reused.

Each year, approximately 80 tonnes of polyurethane foam waste is produced as part of the PURe® manufacturing process. This occurs when extra polyols and isocyanate chemicals are injected into the thermal breaks to prevent cold spots during curing. The result is a unique thermal barrier that delivers lower U-values and improved energy performance compared to traditional systems.

However, the process also creates excess cured foam and although this waste has always had the potential to be reused, it has previously been difficult to manage at scale.

Senior is now working with a specialist waste partner to chemically break down the expanded and cured polyurethane foam into its original raw components—polyols and isocyanates. These recovered materials will be reintroduced into Senior’s own manufacturing processes, creating a circular system that eliminates landfill disposal.

The initiative is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of the year and once implemented, the recovered materials from the manufacture of Senior’s PURe® windows and doors will be reused internally. This approach is expected to reduce carbon emissions, cut waste, and lessen demand for virgin raw materials.

Available in a variety of configurations, including aluminium casement windows, tilt and turn windows, and both commercial

“There is considerable expertise of consumer marketing within the Endurance group and we have already used this to shape Endurance® Doors into a well recognised and respected brand” adds Scott. “We are now using that same knowledge and experience to drive similar levels of success for Endurance® Aluminium. Our installer partners are an important part of that journey and our continued development and launch of tools to support them reflects that.”

products but also providing them with the tools to help sell our range.

“Our investment into the new digital marketing campaign highlights that commitment and is just the latest in long line of business and sales support initiatives that we have planned.”

and domestic style doors, the patented PURe® system has been used across the sectors, specifically in the education and residential markets.

Senior’s investment in advanced recycling initiatives builds on the company’s ongoing commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its operations and supporting customers to make more informed choices. Recent projects completed under the guidance of Senior’s dedicated UK sustainability lead Luke Osborne, include the wider use of UK sourced recycled aluminium through the company’s ReAL 2.0 product line and, most recently, the publication of a new generation of Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) documents.

Developed in line with the latest Product Category Rules, these EPDs go beyond the industry norm by providing projectrelevant data across the full system, supported by scaling tables for accuracy.

Unlike some comparable EPDs, which include elements outside of a system house’s supply and risk distorting results when divided down, Senior’s approach ensures complete transparency by focusing solely on the products it supplies. The first of these detailed, product-specific EPDs covers Senior’s popular SF52 aluminium curtain wall system and is available now on request or via NBS Source.

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) marked its 40th anniversary year with another hugely successful charity golf day at Branston Golf & Country Club – despite a storm threatening to derail the event just days before.

Thirty-one teams – 124 golfers in total – teed off, while a further 35 delegates joined the daytime conference and 180 guests attended the evening dinner.

This year, the sporting fixture was combined with CPD sessions for nonplayers, which included an HR briefing from Sue Hatton, of Pickerings Solicitors, alongside industry-focused updates.

Despite wild weather earlier in the week, the resilience of the Branston greenkeeping team enabled the day to go ahead as planned. A tree had been brought down on the 18th green and damage to the course’s water pumping system meant emergency remedial action was required to save the day.

“It was touch and go for a while,” said Ken Price, ADSA Managing Director, “but storm clouds had a silver lining. The club reimbursed a proportion of our fees and we felt it was only right to share that good fortune by adding a twist to our charity donations.

“Over the years, the bid to win the ADSA Cup has become increasingly competitive but people showing up in numbers and taking part is ultimately what makes the day so successful. That’s why we decided that the team finishing last should also be winners, with an extra

donation to their chosen charity,” he explained.

In total the 2025 event has raised £8,500 for a range of deserving charities.

All Round Securities, from Bolton, took first place and nominated the Royal British Legion, which will receive £2,000.

RTR Services, of Wakes Colne, Essex, finished last but walked away as the ‘losing’ winners, with £500 for the Huntington’s Disease Association.

Other beneficiaries include the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, which supports mental health and wellbeing initiatives aimed at preventing suicide among young people working in construction, the Motor Neurone Disease Association, West Midlands Air Ambulance, Golfantics and St Giles Hospice which will share £4,000 between them.

Added Ken: “ADSA’s annual charity golf day continues to bring together members and industry partners in support of important causes – proving once again that teamwork and community spirit can weather any storm.”

COLOUR CONFIDENCE POINTS TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE

As consumers grow bolder with colour and design, front doors are becoming an expression of personality for homeowners – and a source of opportunity for installers, says Apeer MD Asa McGillian.

For years, the British front door landscape has been dominated by two shades: black and anthracite grey. They’re timeless, sophisticated and still account for the majority of sales. But as the front door has increasingly been seen not just as an entrance but as a statement piece, there has been a gradual yet decisive shift towards colour.

“Over the past five or six years we’ve seen real growth in softer, pastel tones,” says Asa. “Light pinks, porcelain blues and gentle greens are becoming more popular. Consumers are getting braver, especially in the 34–45 age group.

“Front doors colour trends are slow to change. Our most popular colour for years was black, then this gradually changed to anthracite grey – and these two colours are by far still the most popular. So I think up to now homeowners have been nervous to experiment with colour. But that’s all changing.”

THE RISE OF THE INFLUENCERS

Traditionally, dark colours have been favoured for entrance doors due to being seen as the ‘safe’ choice for an expensive outlay. Dark colours were seen as classic, understated and practical. But the rise in social media and home influencers has encouraged consumers to express more personality with their homes.

“Now your front door has become a part of your identity, just like the rest of your home,” says Asa. “Take how popular our magnetic wreath holders have proved. Something as simple as a hidden magnet can help people easily decorate, personalise and refresh their door, whether that’s with wreaths or birthday banners or solar lights – whatever they want. It shows how homeowners see their front door as a reflection of who they are. And now we’re seeing confidence around colour choices grow, and that’s reflected in the diversity of shades we’re producing.”

Around 12% of Apeer’s weekly orders are now for non-standard colours, either bespoke shades or chosen from Apeer’s expanding premium range. The company offers 14 standard colours, but because it handles all spraying in-house, almost any tone can be achieved. ‘Almost’ – because even Apeer has its limits.

“Someone once asked for a fluorescent yellow door,” Asa laughs. “We had to explain that we can’t reproduce fluorescent finishes. They weren’t happy about it, but honestly, we still can’t imagine why anyone would want a fluorescent front door!”

But while that order never materialised, the episode does illustrate a serious point: colour is now part of the conversation in every sale. Even unconventional choices, when executed well, can enhance kerb appeal and give a property a unique personality.

THE IMPORTANCE OF INHOUSE COLOUR CONTROL

Unlike many manufacturers who rely on foiled skins or outsourced spraying, Apeer controls every stage of its finishing process. That allows it to colour not just the door leaf, but also the frame, rebate and trims— ensuring perfect consistency and finish.

“That’s one of our key advantages,” Asa says. “If a homeowner wants their frame to match their door in a precise tone, or even contrast it, we can do that. It gives installers a genuine edge when their customers ask for something bespoke.”

This flexibility has become particularly relevant as trends evolve. Recent reports

“People want warmth and individuality without losing sophistication.”

from colour specialists such as Renolit highlight the growing popularity of sage green, a calming, nature-inspired hue that bridges contemporary and traditional aesthetics. Asa says Apeer’s order books reflect the same shift.

“We’ve seen more requests for greens and natural tones too,” he says. “People want warmth and individuality without losing sophistication. We even get customers sending over specific popular paint brands or RAL numbers, and we can match their colours exactly.”

THE INSIDE STORY

Interestingly, while homeowners are experimenting more with exterior colours, most still prefer white or cream on the inside face of their doors. This keeps hallways bright and versatile, allowing interior décor to change without clashing with the entranceway. Apeer’s ability to spray both sides independently gives customers full freedom to mix and match – bold outside, neutral inside – without compromise.

“I’ve seen a lot of colours go through our factory,” Asa reflects. “Even when I’ve ordered unusual shades for exhibition stands, I’ve never seen a colour that doesn’t look good on our doors. Whether it’s purple, magenta or simply white, the deep grain and high-quality finish just make every shade come alive.

“As the appetite for individuality continues to grow, customisation and colour are fast becoming the hallmarks of a premium offering, and are a key differentiator in the composite door market. Installers who can offer genuine variety and precision matching will find themselves at an advantage – and Apeer’s in-house expertise puts them in a strong position to deliver exactly that.”

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

ENERGY EFFICIENCY – A KEY DRIVER FOR SALES

Selecta Systems Technical Manager, Cliff Prosser, talks about energy efficiency being a key driver for sales and how the ADVANCE 70 Window and Door System meets and exceeds the current industry criteria.

As energy costs continue to burden households and commercial developments alike, Selecta Systems are seeing a surge in demand for its ADVANCE 70 PVCu Window & Door System. With energy efficiency growing to be the number one priority for both retail customers and commercial specifiers, the ADVANCE 70 is proving itself to be the benchmark that meets stringent thermal performance, security and sustainability criteria – while delivering lower energy bills and long-term value.

Across the UK, rising heating costs— alongside regulatory changes in Building Regulations Document L and the incoming Future Homes Standard—are pushing homeowners, architects, social housing providers, and commercial developers to look for building materials that offer more than just aesthetics. Thermal performance

is at the heart of decision making, with U-values, energy ratings and whole-life costs dominating specification sheets and sales conversations.

For retail customers – homeowners seeking to lower their energy bills while improving comfort and kerb appeal – ADVANCE 70 provides a compelling package: attractive aesthetics (in a wide palette of up to 18 colours, including wood grain finishes and

modern matt tones), high security (PAS 24 and Secured by Design), plus strong thermal ratings.

On the commercial side – new build projects, social housing, or commercial specifications – the system’s performance in thermal efficiency is key. The multichambered systems design delivers excellent U-values and energy ratings that align with or exceed the requirements of Building Regulations L and the anticipated Future Homes Standard.

Selecta Systems’ ADVANCE 70 System has a range of high-quality PVCu window and door solutions designed specifically to respond to this demand. Profiles are multi-chambered with improved weather seals that reduce heat loss, trapping warmth in and keeping cold out. Where fitted with standard 28mm double-glazed units, ADVANCE 70 can achieve a U-value of 1.1 W/m²K, delivering strong thermal performance without immediately moving to triple glazing. With premium 40mm triple glazing, even lower U-values of o.8 W/m²K can be achieved, further enhancing insulation and comfort.

ADVANCE 70 is not only strong on insulation – it also delivers in sustainability and security. The system is lead-free, aligning with best environmental practice. Security standards are high: PAS 24, Secured by Design, with robustness in hardware and weather performance, offering peace of mind for homeowners, installers and fabricators.

For commercial developers and specifiers, better energy efficiency also means improved EPC ratings, enhanced marketability of properties, fewer risk factors over lifecycle operation, and potential incentive or compliance advantages under evolving building regulation frameworks.

With energy prices forecast to remain volatile, and regulatory pressure increasing, the window and door sector is shifting decisively toward profiles and systems that deliver measurable energy savings. The ADVANCE 70 System is uniquely positioned to answer this shift: offering strong thermal efficiency, regulatory compliance, design flexibility, and real cost savings for both retailers and commercial clients.

As Selecta Systems continues to share technical data, case studies, and performance reports, we expect ADVANCE 70’s role in both renovation of existing buildings and specification in new‐build and commercial work to continue to grow significantly.

We firmly believe that by partnering with Selecta and our ADVANCE 70 system, our excellent thermal performance ratings present fabricators and installers with greater sales and marketing opportunities. The future proofed ADVANCE 70 window and door system, combined with our first-class marketing and technical support package certainly provides you with the tools to generate new sales leads and win new business across all industry sectors.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

John Park-Davies, group managing director of IKON Aluminium Systems explains the importance of ventilation in our buildings and shares an example of how effective ventilation through the use of aluminium louvres is benefitting Northstowe Learning Community.

Ventilation in buildings is essential for health, comfort, and safety. It helps to maintain indoor air quality, supports health and wellbeing which is particularly important where people share enclosed spaces, works with heating and cooling systems to regulate indoor temperature, and in certain applications, can enhance safety by removing hazardous gases and smoke control.

In England, ventilation requirements fall under Building Regulations Part F and are detailed in Approved Document F. Volume 2 of Approved Document F provides guidance on ventilation for Buildings other than dwellings.

For non-dwellings, such as schools, offices, and hospitals, Volume 2 states that ventilation must dilute and remove indoor pollutants, provide appropriate ventilation rates, and comply with minimum fresh air supply rates. Building designs, therefore must consider occupant density, internal pollutant sources, and building use when specifying appropriate ventilation systems.

CRITICAL TO STUDENT WELLBEING

For the expansion of Northstowe Learning Community, project architect and lead designer, Frank Shaw Associates designed

in a wide range of ventilation solutions to meet the requirement for both natural and mechanical indoor ventilation.

“Ventilation, natural daylight, acoustic comfort, and indoor air quality are critical to student wellbeing, concentration, and learning outcomes – especially in education environments,” comments Claire Mills, Principal of Northstowe Learning Community.

Northstowe Learning Community is an all-through education campus delivering nursery, primary, secondary, and sixth form learning within one integrated site. Phase 2 expands education capacity in Northstowe, one of the most significant new communities under construction in the UK.

CHOSEN SUPPLIER

Duplus Architectural Systems (Duplus) was sub-contracted by construction partner, Kier to supply the aluminium curtain walling, windows and doors. This contract included provision and installation of aluminium louvres. For this, Duplus turned to established supplier, IKON Aluminium Systems.

“We have worked with IKON previously and know them to be reliable; they have never let us down, comments, Ben Roberts, Contracts Department Manager, Duplus Architectural Systems Ltd. “They also make a really good, high quality louvre. We chose IKON for Phase 2 of the Northstowe project based on price and a competitive lead time.”

GLAZED IN ALUMINIUM LOUVRES

For this project, IKON recommended its IKL302-PFA50 glazed in louvre which complies with BS EN 13030:2001 and provides ventilation to help regulate indoor temperature and air quality without letting rain or debris in. This louvre features a blade centre of 30mm and blade angle of 59 degrees and offers 58% visual free area

and 50% physical free area. It achieves the required airflow rate of 50%.

While aluminium louvres have long been recognised as an effective means of natural ventilation, they are also an important component in mechanical ventilation systems, controlling airflow in and out of the building while providing protection.

A proportion of the 101no. louvres supplied by IKON were glazed into aluminium doors manufactured by Duplus. These doors open into the Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) and plant rooms. Consistent ventilation is essential for the MVHR units and plant equipment to operate effectively, efficiently, and safely. With the glazed in louvres, the doors provide both a physical access point and fulfil a ventilation function — maintaining airflow, preventing overheating, and balancing room pressure.

The remaining louvres were fitted directly into the curtain walling made by Duplus. Visually, the louvres blend seamlessly

with the curtain walling maintaining the aesthetic of the modern building design.

AWARD-WINNING EDUCATION CAMPUS

The campus opened to pupils in March 2025. “As one of the first buildings delivered in phase 2 of the town, Northstowe Learning Community has played a key role in establishing strong social and educational foundation for the town,” continues, Claire Mills, Principal of Northstowe Learning Community. “It has been recognised for its exceptional, wellbeing-focused designsupporting science, sport, arts, and outdoor learning, which underscores the importance of environmental quality in education settings.”

Northstowe Learning Community was recently named Best Education Project at the UK Forum East of England Property Awards. The award was received by Homes England, master developer for phases two and three of Northstowe. Meridian Trust and Cambridgeshire County Council were also key partners.

The project was recognised for its lowcarbon construction approach. Effective ventilation through the use of aluminium louvres is contributing to reduced operational emissions and long-term sustainability.

RESHAPING FABRICATION WITH THE SL8-FF-TR 8 HEAD CNC WELDING MACHINE FROM HAFFNER

A new machine collaboration between Haffner and Graf Synergy has delivered a machine that fundamentally reshapes the way fabrication is carried out, and gives fabricators the ability to increase efficiency, reduce costs and deliver products with a premium finish.

The new SL8-FF-TR 8 Head CNC Welding Machine is the only machine in the world capable of seamlessly welding all four corners of a PVC-U frame, along with two timber-effect transoms, in a single automated cycle and all without any manual cleaning or retouching.

Matt Thomas, Managing Director at Haffner, said: “Traditional welding and cleaning lines have served the industry

well for years, but they come with inherent inefficiencies. They’re large, require significant factory space, involve multiple operators and extra time to manually clean and touch up finished corner and transom welds. The SL8-FF-TR changes all of that.”

By condensing what was previously a complex, multi-step operation into a single, compact machine, the SL8-FFTR streamlines production dramatically, delivering huge time and labour savings. A fully welded and finished frame is ready in under 150 seconds, with just one operator required. Furthermore, because it’s a single machine, it frees up valuable factory space, allowing fabricators to increase output without the need for costly expansions or additional equipment.

Quality of finish is also dramatically enhanced. The seamless welds and mechanical-jointing effect give frames a clean, refined appearance that closely replicates the aesthetics of traditional timber joints. For fabricators competing in the growing flush sash and heritage-style markets, this premium aesthetic provides a clear competitive advantage. Plus, by

removing the need for sprue removal and other post-weld finishing processes, the machine reduces consumable use and lowers ongoing operating costs too.

The SL8-FF-TR is already delivering for Haffner customers. Early adopters of the machine have reported throughput increases of at least 50%, reductions in labour requirements of up to 75% and operating expense savings of around 30%.

In one installation, a single SL8-FF-TR replaced a traditional line that occupied 120m² of space, freeing up 95m² for other high-value operations.

“What excites me most about this machine is the new opportunities it creates. It allows fabricators to scale up production, move into high-margin product lines and differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive market.”

Matt concluded: “What excites me most about this machine is the new opportunities it creates. It allows fabricators to scale up production, move into high-margin product lines and differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive market. It’s not just a step forward in welding technology, but a reinvention of the entire process.”

KEEP IT SIMPLE

As the industry continues to navigate tough trading conditions, manufacturers are looking at all the ways they can to improve production efficiencies. Thanks to Jade, this can often be found in simple, cost effective and readily available solutions that avoid a big budget outlay.

The US Navy’s Virginia class nuclear attack submarines are a marvel of modern engineering. Equipped with a powerful arsenal of weapons and home to 135 submariners, they have an unlimited range and cost billions to construct.

Yet one of their most vital pieces of equipment, the boat’s periscope, is operated by a simple Xbox 360 controller that could be purchased for less than £20.

When the Virginia class submarines were first commissioned, the US Navy used specialised control panels costing $40,000 apiece to operate the advanced periscopes, but switched to Xbox controllers when they realised they could do the job for a fraction of the cost.

As an added bonus, they also found that younger sailors were already familiar with

them, and could learn to operate the system in minutes, saving a considerable amount of training time.

It is a perfect example of how simple, cost effective solutions can often have a huge positive impact on traditionally complex operations and an important lesson for all those window and door fabricators who may currently be looking for ways to introduce manufacturing efficiencies without breaking the bank.

After all, a well organised and wellequipped factory floor has always been a priority for the industry, but in the current economic climate, rarely has there been as much pressure to ensure that production is running as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

Machinery suppliers will be quick to point out the advantages of modern automation, but when margins are already very tight, spending large sums of money on new equipment may not just be unpalatable, it could also be unrealistic for many business owners.

Fortunately, the industry has engineering specialist Jade to fall back on, a company with huge amounts of experience not just in developing smaller, bespoke manufacturing solutions, but also in advising fabricators on how to optimise production lines through its JadeConsult service.

Jade’s Adam Jones explains: “The latest generation of machinery for window and door manufacturing is impressive, it has

raised the bar for product quality, lead times and all round efficiencies – but it comes at a price!

“Currently, large capital investments might not be viable for some businesses and actually, we find that we can often solve persistent quality issues or bottle necks in production lines, without resorting to new and expensive equipment.

“That’s because we’ve worked with countless fabrication firms over the years, so we can often identify a problem – and recommend a fix – very quickly,” he continues. “It could be a relatively simple adjustment to the line, or could it be that we introduce a small, standalone solution such as one of our punch tools.”

Designed as a multi-purpose tool, Jade refers to its punch tools as a ‘Swiss Army Knife’ that has been developed for processing multiple aluminium profiles.

Not only is it compact, freeing up valuable floor space, the multi-head configuration also means that the need for timeconsuming tool changes and multiple punch stations is dramatically reduced.

Jade’s punch tools can be specified to suit exact requirements and once operational, will speed up the relatively simple but essential process of punching holes with

much greater accuracy and over many cycles.

Already a vital component to factories the length and breadth of the UK, Jade recently developed a version for aluminium system company Alunet, to coincide with the launch of the new Aluna+ product line.

Described by Alunet’s product development director, Chris Armes, as ‘the Rolls Royce’ of punch tools, it is easy to use, and easy to maintain as well.

“We are UK based, so not only do we have new punch tools in stock, ready to go for Alunet customers, but if they need any replacement parts we can have them delivered in 24 hours – that’s a big advantage over other suppliers that need to get parts in from overseas,” continues Adam.

“It’s also a good example of why you don’t always need to buy a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Some machinery suppliers will try and convince you that a high-tech problem requires a high-tech – and expensive –solution.

“We’ve demonstrated, however, that even the most complex production lines can be optimised with much simpler, relatively low-tech engineering that’s affordable and effective.”

Software pioneers Tommy Trinder are celebrating as the total number of window companies using the sales platform passes 700.

“Making a decent return is getting tougher for installers,” says Chris Brunsdon, founder and CEO of Tommy Trinder. “Firms who are thinking smart and not just working harder, are the ones who are pulling ahead, and Tommy is helping to power that shift.”

From one-man bands to nationals and from the highlands to the Channel Islands, Tommy Trinder has established itself as go to app for installers looking to energise their sales process.

At the heart of the platform is its unique Framepoint Technology®. This patented system lets users free draw PVCu, aluminium, and timber windows and doors with all the ease of sketching on a pad.

Switching colours, ironmongery, bars and finishes is a doddle, and in a couple of taps installers can give homeowners a lifelike preview of how the products will look on their home. Says Chris:

“Even if you’re not exactly tech-savvy, Tommy makes it easy to wow clients,” says Chris. “In a competitive market, you have to stand out; you have to give homeowners something that makes them sit up and take notice.”

The value of work quoted by installers on Tommy Trinder is on the rise too. Every month an eye-watering £300 million pounds worth of work is quoted to homeowners via the platform. High average quote values are also a feature with quote values climbing towards £7900 over the last six months. According to Chris, premium products are playing a key role in that uplift; “Aluminium and timber now represent nearly half of all quotes generated through the platform,” says Chris. “For PVCu, our users are seeing a bump in job value by making it easy to showcase premium

features - foils, dual colour options, flush casements, peg-stays and decorative barsall brought to life in a visual and compelling way for the homeowner.”

The firm reports that more than 14,000 homeowners receive a quote generated by Tommy Trinder every month and, notably, around half of them are provided with visualisations to accompany their quote; “We’re seeing a shift in expectations,” says Chris. “Homeowners want more than just a number - they want a complete experience. The makeover feature, where installers drop new windows onto a photo of the property, is fast becoming a must-have part of the sales pitch.”

“Homeowners expect more. They want to see exactly what they are getting; they want to try before they buy. And Tommy Trinder is proving to be the tool for the job.”

7 IMAGE OPTIMISATION TIPS FOR GLASS AND GLAZING COMPANIES

Shots

of stunning french

doors

or a dramatic roof lantern can do wonders for your marketing, perhaps catching someone’s attention for the first time, or motivating them to download your brochure. But what impact does it have on your SEO?

Not enough companies in the sector consider this. Many are blissfully unaware of the mistakes they might be making, resulting in less organic traffic than they could be getting. Equally, there are many positive changes you could be making to get ahead of your competitors in the search listings. Even better, many of these are tweaks you can do yourself without the help of a developer. We’ll take a look at some easily actionable steps to get started.

COMPRESS YOUR IMAGES

High quality photos are usually quite large, and this is when your advantage can quickly become your disadvantage. Big files typically slow your site down, which not only provides a bad user experience, it directly impacts your SEO, as site speed is actually one of Google’s ranking factors. A technical crawl of your site can identify if your images are larger than recommended.

If there are only one or two offenders, look for image compressors online which can quickly shrink your photos for free. If it’s a sitewide issue - as it often is for companies in this space - look for a plug-in instead. This is a quick way to compress all your images, as well as automatically resize any new ones that get added.

CHECK YOUR IMAGE FORMAT

Another really easy mistake to avoid is using a less than optimal file format. For example, a PNG is a naturally larger file that can slow your site down. While they retain all data and quality (making them ideal for print advertising) it’s better to avoid them on your site where possible. JPEGs are smaller than PNGs, but WebP images offer superior compression so opt for these where you can.

PAY ATTENTION TO FILE NAMES

This tip is even easier than the first two if that’s possible. What you save your images as is one of many factors that can affect your performance in the search engines. Using a clear and descriptive name, with keywords where relevant, supports image optimisation and makes them easier to find - definitely worth the additional 30 seconds it takes! Use lower case text and separate each word with hyphens, e.g. ‘clear-glassbalustrading.webp’.

ADD ALT TEXT

Staying with the naming convention theme, adding descriptive alt text to your images

is another good habit to get into for SEO. While primarily there to aid those with visual impairments, alt text also helps make your site more accessible to search engines. It’s another opportunity to use your keywords where appropriate which can help these images to appear for relevant searches,

CONSIDER LAZY LOADING

This point may be testing the boundaries of actions you can undertake yourself, but it’s a useful one so it gets a pass! If you’re reluctant to compress your images too much (understandable when your business lives and dies on its aesthetic appeal), you might

want to look into ‘lazy loading’. This is when you see images begin to appear as you scroll down a page, as the loading is deferred until the user reaches that part of the page, thus speeding up initial load time.

ENSURE YOUR IMAGES WORK ON DIFFERENT SCREEN SIZES

PRODUCTION SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGY CELEBRATES

35 YEARS OF INNOVATION

Production Software Technology (PST) is proud to celebrate its 35th anniversary, marking over three decades of innovation in software solutions for the glazing, construction and home improvement industries.

Founded in 1990, PST began as a supplier of BOCAD-3D to structural steel manufacturers across the UK, Australia and South Africa. A pivotal moment came when a client asked for software capable of handling more complex façade designs. What began with glass façades soon expanded into conservatories and bespoke structures, ultimately leading to PST’s own flagship platform, Virtual Shopfloor (VS), tailored to manufacturers’ needs.

PST’s history is closely tied to the dedication of its people. As one of the company’s founding members, Neil Travers, has been part of its journey from day one. He reflects, “It’s incredible to see how far we’ve come, from a small team solving very specific challenges to now working with leading names in the industry. What hasn’t changed is our focus on listening to our customers and building solutions that make the functionality of their businesses easier.”

Alongside him, Director Fabricio has been with PST since 2001 and has played a key role in driving some of the company’s biggest innovations, including the development of the VisiRoom app,

Today, PST serves a global client base which includes some of the most recognisable names in the industry, as well as many independent businesses who rely on its software day-to-day. This reach is matched by a commitment to continuous innovation: PST’s software is constantly developed and refined to meet the evolving industry needs. Just as important is the company’s culture of support, with a responsive and knowledgeable team that customers consistently value as highly as the software itself.

As it looks to the future, PST remains focused on helping clients work smarter, build better and deliver outstanding results.

To mark the anniversary, PST is offering a special promotion throughout November 2025, anyone who starts a trial of vsHome during the month will receive a full month’s credit applied to their account once their first subscription payment is made.

QFLOW’S NEW ALERT SYSTEM FLAGS NON-COMPLIANT MATERIALS BEFORE INSTALLATION

Qflow (Qualis Flow), a leading construction data capture and analysis tool have focused on real-time tracking of materials, waste, and carbon data, launches Advanced Alerts. The first tool on the market that gives project teams a point of intervention before nonspecified or non-compliant materials are installed.

This is a breakthrough moment for the construction sector, solving a common and costly challenge that has long plagued project teams: knowing what actually arrives on site, in time to act.

While the industry has made strides in improving quality and compliance, material verification remains a persistent weak spot. Recent data shows that up to 95% of deliveries arrive with incomplete or poorquality documentation, leaving room for error, rework, and in some cases, real safety and performance risks for end users.

With Advanced Alerts, Qflow empowers construction teams with live notifications, via app and email, that flag any risks linked to incoming materials, based on site-specific rules. For the first time, teams can intervene before faulty, substandard, or incorrect materials are installed. Fewer delays, reduced rework, and greater peace of mind.

Critically, this also protects the long-term performance of the building itself. When wrong materials are installed, the result

isn’t just wasted budget; it can lead to fire safety risks, structural failures, or reduced thermal comfort for the people who live and work in those buildings. Easy to deploy and integrate with existing tools, Advanced Alerts provides immediate, actionable insights that put project teams back in control.

In a fast-moving, high-risk environment like construction, this real-time visibility is a game-changer, giving teams the confidence to deliver to spec, to budget, and to the highest safety standards.

THE ADVANCED ALERTS TOOL

Commenting on this latest innovation, Jade Cohen, Co-founder at Qflow, says: "On site, it is natural that substituted materials, unapproved suppliers, or incorrect fuel use, can go identified and, often, these issues aren’t picked up until it’s too late.

With Qflow Advanced Alerts, our goal is simple: to help teams stay ahead of these risks, protecting project timelines, budgets, and ultimately, the safety of both construction teams and future building users. This advancement is all about giving project teams the tools they need to act sooner using automated notifications that ensure the materials delivered to site meet the intended quality, compliance, and design standards from the outset.”

Advanced Alerts, has been developed in consultation with Project and Site Managers, Environmental, Finance, Quality and Compliance Teams, and is available in Beta to existing customers at no additional cost until the end of October 2025.

WHY QUALITY MARKETING DATA IS YOUR BUSINESS’S LIFELINE

Alex Tremlett, commercial director at Insight Data, reveals how the right marketing data transforms glazing businesses and turns prospects into contracts.

Picture this: two glazing firms, Tremlett’s Draughty Deals and Winter’s Panes, go head-to-head with the same marketing budget. Both are eager, both are hungry for new customers, both splash out on a fresh data list. But here is the twist - one buys the bargain spreadsheet from a faceless supplier, the other invests in a verified industry-specific database. Fast-forward six months and the difference is staggering.

Tremlett’s Draughty Deals’ sales team are pulling their hair out. Half the phone numbers don’t work, emails bounce back like rubber balls and glossy brochures return unopened with “Not at this address” scrawled across them. Meanwhile, Winter’s Panes are closing deals hand over fist. They are calling the right people, getting meetings with decisionmakers and watching conversion rates climb. Same budget, completely different outcome. The only real difference is the quality of the data that powered their campaigns.

It might be tempting to pinch pennies when sourcing marketing lists, but cheap data comes at a hidden cost. Every bounced email, every returned brochure and every wasted

call eats into budgets and productivity. Poor data also puts credibility in jeopardy. A brand that contacts the wrong people repeatedly earns a reputation for incompetence, no matter how strong its products or service. Accurate data, by contrast, ensures campaigns reach the right inboxes and addresses, freeing sales teams to focus on genuine prospects rather than chasing dead leads. It reduces wasted spend and allows businesses to see a measurable return on investment.

Not all databases are created equal. Verified, traceable and GDPR-compliant information is essential. At Insight Data, we have spent many years building databases specifically for the glazing and construction sectors. Our clients benefit from records that are regularly verified, contacts for genuine decision-makers, full traceability of how and where the data was collected and full compliance with regulations. This level of quality ensures campaigns are targeted, sales conversations are relevant and marketing spend is optimised. Insight Data’s Salestracker platform brings this intelligence to life, providing real-time access to thousands of prospects with advanced search and filtering, performance tracking and integration with marketing tools.

High-quality data delivers visible benefits. Businesses using accurate industry-specific information can make better decisions, reduce costs, improve productivity and run marketing campaigns that actually convert. In a sector as fast-moving as glazing, companies open and close, staff move roles and new opportunities emerge constantly.

Maintaining accurate data internally is almost impossible, so partnering with a specialist provider like Insight Data ensures you stay competitive, reach the right people at the right time and avoid wasted effort on dead contacts.

For marketing agencies and in-house teams, access to verified data allows campaigns to be highly targeted. Messaging can be tailored to individual prospects, results tracked in real time and emerging opportunities spotted before competitors. In short, raw information is transformed into actionable intelligence, giving businesses a real edge in the marketplace.

Tremlett’s Draughty Deals and Winter’s Panes make the point clear. The quality of marketing data can determine success or failure. Skimping on data may save a few quid upfront, but the long-term costs of wasted spend, frustrated staff and missed opportunities are far higher. Investing in verified, up-to-date, GDPR-compliant data pays dividends. Insight Data provides the tools to reach the right prospects, make informed decisions and convert opportunities into contracts. In the glazing industry, where every lead counts, the right data is essential.

It is not enough to simply have data. Success depends on having the right information at the right time. And, crucially, about the right people. That distinction can be the difference between surviving and thriving in the glazing industry.

DANNY WILLIAMS ‘COLD CALLING’

Each month our special correspondent Danny Williams* replies to a reader’s letter...

“I’ve been installing windows and doors for years and keep looking for additional products to add to my portfolio.  Flush sash and VS windows sell nicely for me and colour has certainly been a big seller but we need something to spark imagination in customers to drive sales. What do you believe will be the Next Big Thing?” TW Retail Installer Warwickshire

Sales amongst most of my retail customers predominantly based in the South and East of England are flat, to say the least and we could really do with that ‘killer’ product that lights the fires of desire amongst homeowners. But to be honest TW I wouldn’t hold your breath.

By definition British homes are traditional in design and when you look at new builds we are building more of the same. The popularisation of flush sash windows by the introduction of R9 14 years ago prompted interest and sales but of course, this was simply a revival of a traditional window style. I am therefore not expecting any radical product introduction that will drive up sales. In fact at the risk of being a tad controversial The Next Big Thing that will stimulate sales will be a change of government TW. HOWEVER….I do believe that there is room for improvement in the products that we sell that would make our jobs as fabricators and installers easier and in turn more efficient and profitable. And some subtle design changes can make many of the products that we sell more attractive to punters at least.

Aesthetically whilst there will be little that can be done to change the fundamental design of our windows there is still room for improvement in the sight lines. Most systems and including flush sash, remain a little too bulky compared to period timber frames and I urge systems companies to continue to improve in this important respect.

To achieve this, the syscos must redesign hardware, which continue to limit the opportunity to design slimmer sashes. The eurogroove was introduced in the late seventies, becoming popular in PVC-U systems in the early eighties but window design has changed dramatically since then. But is restricted by the continued use of a standard that is now 45 years old.

That is not all: every time one of the PVC-U systems houses releases its latest and greatest, I look and wonder

what is the big deal? Every new system claims to be easier to manufacture and install and yet the same issues are overlooked.

PVC-U window and door frames are generally the lowest cost products available in the window and door marketplace but are the most expensive to manufacture. They require continued investment in costly machinery and skilled operators. I believe that not enough attention is paid to the cost of manufacturing these frames, despite the claims of the syscos.

The growth of aluminium fabricators is hardly surprising when we consider that the products are relatively easy to produce, requiring only modest investment in machinery and equipment and retail prices and margins are usually significantly higher.

PVC-U systems need a fundamental rethink, starting with the eurogroove but a number of other issues need addressing: First, talk to us fabricators! Of course you engage with your established customers but I wonder how many step outside of their existing customer base and talk to the users of other systems, to find out what they like and dislike.

We need simpler profiles that require less machining and therefore reduced dependency on skilled staff. Optimise sash and frame geometry for corner cleaning, welding, and cutting centres — consistent reference points, wider flat surfaces, and predictable weld behaviour all help the fabrication process. Design in smart drainage to reduce or avoid machining and manual operations.

Design multi-chamber profiles with intelligent wall placement to maintain rigidity without over-engineering

"The growth of aluminium fabricators is hardly surprising when we consider that the products are relatively easy to produce, requiring only modest investment in machinery and equipment and retail prices and margins are usually significantly higher."

"By definition those companies willing to employ illegals are themselves taking advantage of the fact they are off-grid and will simply find other methods or most likely, go deeper still underground. How will this be a deterrent?"

to reduces welding and cooling time. Improved rigidity and less reliance on reinforcement may also allow lighter profiles thus reducing overall weight, handling complexity in the factory and on site, and transport costs.

And if you can’t design-out reinforcement, at least standardise steel/aluminium reinforcement sizes across the suite to reduce stockholding. Share ancillaries such as packers, couplers and gaskets across casement, flush and tilt n turn styles to reduce complexity.

So, whilst I am sure my answer does not cause you to pop a cork even in anticipation of the Next Big Thing According to Danny, there is some food for thought here that might prompt some better looking, better performing and easier to make and fit windows come the next big system launch. But don’t hold your breath TW.

And in other news…

I have to voice my fears and doubts and rage even at the announcement that digital ID cards are being considered (itself code for ‘they’re happening’ of course.

One of the key drivers is the claim that such things will provide a deterrent to illegal immigration by making it unattractive for companies to employ people under the radar. Utter tosh of course.

By definition those companies willing to employ illegals are themselves taking advantage of the fact they are offgrid and will simply find other methods or most likely, go deeper still underground. How will this be a deterrent?

The sheer naivety of this government is baffling and actually, quite scary.

FDM – TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT LAUNCHES INDUSTRY-FIRST GQA

LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA IN INSTALLATION OF FIRE RESISTANT DOORSETS

FDM – Training & Development (FDM), a leading fire door training provider, has launched its GQA Level 3 Diploma in Installation of Fire Resistant Doorsets. This vocational qualification certifies individuals as having the necessary skills and knowledge to install fire resistant doorsets safely and competently.

The 73-credit diploma has been developed with awarding body GQA Qualifications and construction training provider National Skills Centre. It comprises 11 core units, four optional units, and 226 guided learning hours — 159 more guided learning hours and up to 12 additional units than its closest competitor. It is the second of FDM’s “super series” qualifications, after it launched its Level 3 Diploma in Inspection of Fire Resistant Doorsets earlier this year.

The Fire Door Installation Diploma focuses on the required practical skills, knowledge, experience, and behaviours (SKEB) needed for competent fire door installation, as well as guidance on ensuring installation meets legislative standards. Assessment content includes the processes to plan and carry out fire door installation, guidance for completing fire door installation checks and records, and the importance of Continuing Professional Development for fire door installers. Candidates gain experience by installing six different fire-resistant door types, made of multiple materials including timber, composite, and steel; this is unique to this qualification. Learners are then assessed onsite to demonstrate

practical implementation of this training, their SKEB, and their ongoing competence in a workplace environment.

Since launching in February 2024, FDM has educated more than 1,200 industry professionals from across the supply chain about fire door safety best practices, bridging industry knowledge gaps. It has been recognised as a leader throughout the industry, winning Training Provider of the Year at the 2025 Fire & Security Matters Awards and Training Company of the Year at the 2024 National Fenestration Awards.

Nicola John, Managing Director of FDM –Training & Development, said: “We’re driving change with our robust and holistic training and assessments. Our ‘super series’ of Level 3 qualifications has been created by and for the construction industry, meeting their unique fire door safety needs by helping them become more competent and compliant. By bridging knowledge gaps for fire door installers, we’re raising safety standards for everyone.”

Martin Sadler, Qualifications and Product Development Manager at GQA Qualifications, said: “We’re continuing to shape the industry with the Level 3 Diploma in Fire Door Installation, providing a modernised approach to qualification delivery and assessment. We’re working to ensure the next generation of fire door installers are qualified, developing their ongoing competence journey, and demonstrating how they are meeting the requirements of the 2022 Building Safety Act: this qualification is a major step in that mission.”

Debra Green, Business Owner of National Skills Centre, noted: “With this qualification, we’re changing industry standards for installer competence. By being comprehensive and exploring both practical and legislative requirements of fire door installation, we are creating a safer, more knowledgeable construction workforce.”

DHF TO LEAD CSCS CARD DELIVERY FOR LOADING BAY EQUIPMENT INSTALLERS HIGHLIGHTING

A NEW CHAPTER IN RAISING STANDARDS, COMPETENCE AND SAFETY ACROSS THE SECTOR

The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) is set to assume a key role in strengthening the competence and safety of loading bay equipment installers, becoming the primary issuer of CSCS Blue Skilled Worker cards for those working with dock levellers from 1st September 2025.

This development marks a natural next step in DHF’s long-standing commitment to raising standards across the industrial and commercial door sector. Building on its collaborative work with the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA), through which it already delivers CSCS cards to operatives across the gates, shutters, garage doors, and doorset sectors, this move extends DHF’s remit to include a further

group of specialist operatives, those who work at the very front line of logistics infrastructure.

Through the Entrance Systems Alliance (ESA), a collaborative trade initiative led by DHF and ADSA, the organisations already co-deliver the Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Specialist Installation Occupations (Construction) – Loading Bay Equipment – Installation or Maintenance, a qualification that has become widely respected within the industry. By aligning this recognised pathway with CSCS card provision, DHF is helping to formalise and elevate professional standards in a sector where safety and skill must go hand-in-hand.

DHF has also developed the Level 2 Award in Dock Leveller Safety,

an Ofqual-regulated qualification created in partnership with ALEM, the trade association for loading bay equipment manufacturers and suppliers. This tailored award directly addresses the specific operational risks faced by installers in the loading bay environment and reflects DHF’s rigorous and safety-first approach to competence development.

To achieve the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card for dock leveller installation or maintenance, operatives must now successfully complete both the NVQ and the Dock Leveller Safety Award, a dual qualification route that prioritises not only technical skill, but the ability to work safely and responsibly in high-risk environments. To ensure this safety knowledge remains current,

all cardholders will be required to renew their Dock Leveller Safety Award every three years, reflecting the fast-evolving nature of technology, standards, and best practice in the field.

Those wishing to obtain the Dock Leveller CSCS card can apply online in the dedicated area of the DHF website. https://bit. ly/40OzC1j where you can upload your supporting documents, register for the mandatory Health & Safety in the Environment test and pay, all in one place.

With a fully compliant training infrastructure, a network of sector partnerships, and a decades-long track record of delivery, DHF is uniquely placed to lead this progression. For industry employers, specifiers, and contractors alike, this new

understanding their challenges, and crafting strategies that deliver realworld results. “My goal is simple,” Kelly said. “To ensure every customer feels supported, understood, and confident in the solutions we provide. Distinction Doors already has a strong reputation for quality and service. I’m here to build on that and take it to the next level.”

Kelly added: “I’m passionate about building meaningful relationships and creating strategic partnerships that support our customers’ success. Whether it’s through smarter product integration, tailored support, or educational resources, everything we do will be designed to make life easier and better for our clients.”

Her appointment marks a new chapter in Distinction Doors’ journey - one that puts customers firmly at the centre of every decision.

framework offers a robust and nationally recognised route to verified competence.

As the industry continues to demand higher standards, improved safety, and increased competence across all disciplines, this expanded framework from DHF represents a significant step forward; one that not only supports individual operatives, but strengthens the wider supply chain.

HOW TO DRIVE PROFITABILITY BY STANDING OUT IN A SATURATED MARKET

Ben Brocklesby, Director at Origin, leading manufacturer of premium aluminium doors and windows, discusses how installers can stand out in a crowded marketplace by offering homeowner’s exactly what they want.

Simply offering quality products isn't enough to drive sustainable growth in today's competitive fenestration industry. For installers to truly thrive, they must shift their focus from selling products to delivering a complete solution for homeowners.

UNDERSTANDING HOMEOWNER’S WANTS

For this to happen, installers must first understand what homeowners want. They are not just looking for functionality and aesthetics; they are also craving performance.

One of the most pressing issues homeowners are facing at the moment is the price of energy. This means thermal efficiency is now increasingly important to them. Homeowners are actively seeking ways to save on bills. As a result, installers need to be able to recommend products that meet or even exceed current and future thermal efficiency regulations.

Home security also remains a top priority for homeowners. So, in order to stand out above the rest of the market, installers must be offering products that boast advanced locking systems and innovative security

features. These in turn offer homeowners greater peace of mind.

Being unique is also something homeowners truly value. They take pride in their homes and want products that complement their home’s interior and exterior style, whether it's modern, traditional, or something in between. With this in mind, it’s vital that installers offer a wide range of colours, finishes, and customisation options in order to meet these diverse aesthetic needs.

STANDING OUT

With a greater understanding of what homeowner’s want, installers can tailor their offering to be much more targeted, speaking directly to a customer’s buying priority. This is vital in a saturated market.

For example, Origin’s newest product addition, the OS-29+, is a completely new sliding door system that combines minimalist design with cutting-edge performance. The system embodies these three key homeowner desires: thermal efficiency, security, and aesthetics.

The OS-29+ has been carefully engineered by our in-house research and development team to deliver exceptional thermal performance. Achieving U-Values as low as 0.78 W/m²K, this system redefines

what is possible for sliders, and is the most thermally efficient aluminium sliding door available. This level of efficiency gives installers and specifiers a new option for customers looking to improve a home’s energy performance.

Installers can also offer clients significant design flexibility. With over 150 RAL colours available, the OS-29+ can be fully customised to suit a wide range of styles. Combined with Origin’s own inhouse powder coating facility, accredited by Qualicoat, every door benefits from a flawless and long-lasting finish. Our 10-stage pre-treatment process ensures the aluminium is thoroughly prepared before coating, giving the product the durability and level of finish our Trade Partners expect.

Plus, our sleek, tactile, high-end signature knurled handles tie perfectly into our full product suite, allowing installers to offer a cohesive look across bi-folds, internal doors, windows and sliders.

The new Sliding Door exceeds all required security accreditations and achieves PAS:24, providing homeowners with ultimate confidence in their investment. With a multipoint lock and a 3-Star Diamond Cylinder, it delivers unrivalled home security. Therefore, no matter the priority, the OS29+ delivers a superior and future-ready solution for modern glazing requirements.

DELIVERING WHAT THE MARKET NEEDS

It has never been more important for installers to stand out. To do this, they need to truly understand what homeowners want, tailor their offering, and deliver on the promise.

By aligning with Origin, installers get the unique combination of unrivalled thermal efficiency, design flexibility, and guaranteed quality, which helps them be relevant for more projects and close more leads.
