With a few cautionary notes, D & G Consulting forecast an

The Spring and Summer 2015 edition of D & G Consulting’s ‘The PVC Window, Door and Conservatory Industry Market Forecasts to 2017 has just been published and is the first forecast for the UK window and door industry after the UK general election. Before the election the different political parties were offering many policies that would positively improve the future of the window and door industry over the next five years. Not-the-least of these promises from all parties was a boost in the construction of houses and although there had been no mention of this boost to house building in its first Queens speech, the government has since announced a reform to the planning system in an attempt to ease the path to new homes delivery. The plans, which are part of a 90 page document aimed at improving UK productivity, include automatic planning permission on “suitable” brownfield sites in the new government Housing Zones. The

government also wants to intervene to release land if local authorities have not drawn up local plans for housing delivery. They have also said that major infrastructure projects that include housing provision will be fast-tracked under the proposals. This drive to increase new home supply comes from the Treasury and chancellor George Osborne, specifically, who said that Britain had been “incapable of building enough homes”. D & G’s forecast shows a continuation in the improving situation to the UK window and door industry extending from the short term to the long term although overall the difference between this forecast and that produced last winter is marginal. The industry has been boosted by the increased activity within much of the construction industry over the past few months and also with the welcome increase in consumer spending – this after four years of austerity. The period from 2016 shows an easing of the rate of growth due to the timing of the increases to the interest rates and the political uncertainty in Europe. As has been the case for the past few years composite and bifold doors are ‘bucking’ the trends. The revival in house building, albeit less than expected pre the election is welcome but even with Help to Buy (H2B1) the level of house building lags behind the 2007 levels. However, increasing housing transactions are providing a boost to housing improvements. Improvements that includes windows and doors. Almost all product ranges are expected to benefit throughout the four year forecast period including windows, composite, French and bifold doors.
