EUROPEAN COMMISSION REGULATION RESTRICTING LEAD IN PVC ENABLES CONTINUITY OF PVC RECYCLING

VinylPlus®, the European PVC industry’s commitment to sustainable development, welcomes today’s publication of the European Commission Regulation restricting lead in PVC under the EU’s REACH regulation.

The Regulation, which will enter into force in twenty days, supports the industry’s efforts to substitute lead stabilisers in PVC production. In fact, VinylPlus has been working proactively to substitute lead, and since 2015, the EU PVC industry across all EU-27 Member States has ceased using lead-based stabilisers.

With this restriction, the European Commission Regulation builds upon the industry’s efforts to reduce the use of hazardous substances in PVC products and further enhances the circularity of the PVC industry. The Regulation will restrict the import of lead-containing PVC products from third countries where lead is still used as a stabiliser. It will also set a way forward to enable the recycling of PVC products containing legacy lead additives in a manner which safeguards human health and the environment. Additionally, the industry will be given enough time to adjust to the new rules, ensuring the continuity

of recycling and enabling the industry’s contribution to the EU’s circular economy.

Brigitte Dero, VinylPlus Managing Director, commented: “PVC is a building block of our modern societies: it is a versatile, durable and highly recyclable polymer, widely used in various applications, including building and construction, energy production, agriculture, and healthcare. It plays a significant role in enabling the EU Green Deal, and the industry’s commitment to increase its recycling rate contributes to the EU circular economy. The restriction on lead in PVC represents a significant step in enabling the PVC industry to meet its ambitious recycling targets of one million tonnes per year of recycled PVC used in new products by 2030 in a safe way for human health and the environment.

VinylPlus is committed to continuing its efforts to accelerate the European PVC value chain transition to a circular economy, and we look forward to collaborating with all stakeholders to achieve our common goals.”

THE FIT SHOW’S BEEN GREAT. SO

It’s all happening! Yes, the FIT Show has now been….and gone.

That’s it for two years with the next FIT Show scheduled for 2025. Although being held every two years was the expected schedule so that Fensterbau and FIT didn’t clash, with Covid playing its part, we’ve become used to having FIT every year. No longer! Let’s hope we’ve all made the best of this year’s show as, of now, 2025 seems a long way away.

Every time that interest rates are increased by the Bank of England I wonder if it will influence the buying habits of the general public and of homeowners, specifically. Will it mean less free cash for home improvements and especially for doors, windows, lanterns and the like? Up to now it doesn’t seem to have caused our industry significant damage. Perhaps there are still savings stashed away to fund fenestration upgrades or, bearing in mind how low interest rates are compared to back in the ‘70s, loans are still affordable. We keep hearing how the peak has been reached and how inflation and the cost of living will start to recede – let’s hope they are actually correct this time as there has to be a limit as to how much in savings can be shelled out or how much in additional loans can be absorbed by the homeowner. The answer? Target the homeowner who works for any public service – they’re the ones with the cash to splash!

What else is happening? Well 15 June is an important date as a new Part L comes into force. There’s been a ‘stay of execution’ since 15 June 2022 for new build but now the changes to Part L (Conservation of fuel and power) of Building Regulations came into force in the form of two new Approved Documents. There are higher performance targets – CO2 emissions are reduced by 31% for dwellings and 27% for other buildings – and a new emphasis on low carbon heating systems. These are an interim step towards the Future Homes Standard and Future Buildings Standard that will arrive in 2025.

CONTENTS

Part L has been slimmed down from four parts into two volumes: Volume 1: Dwellings and Volume 2: Buildings other than dwellings.  As far as fenestration is concerned the U values for windows and doors reduces from 1.4 w/m2/k to 1.2 w/m2/k. RIBA says that the increase in window U-values to 1.2 W/(m2k) in the notional building means that tripleglazed/high performance windows will become the norm, limiting the choice of manufacturers. They also warn that increased weight may also limit the size of openings, and limit usability in the case of fully-reversible windows.

Interestingly, Danny Williams of Pioneer Trading in Chelmsford talks about this very subject in his Cold Calling column this month and it is well worth a read. The bringing in of the new build sector to the regulations highlights some interesting issues and ones that need to be addressed. I refer to how one home could have to be treated in two different ways when replacing windows and fitting windows to a new extension. Yes, the refurb is governed by one set of standards and the extension is treated as a new build with different U values applying to each. Danny refers to his work with the NHS and he probably has it right – just fit the best possible windows with best values for insulation and sound, not forgetting security, too. We have long talked about triple glazing, the extra weight when fitting and transporting, and the cost. Danny advocates using the best performing materials and embracing the changes that the Future Homes Standard will bring in in 2025. After all, we’re all interested in preserving the planet, providing the best living conditions for all and keeping the heating bills down!

With the FIT Show over I find myself searching my diary for future events and visits, knowing full well that having had three days of social interaction it will seem strange returning to the isolation of my office and the peace and quiet! Fortunately, the diary is filling up nicely and there are plenty of visits, functions, product launches and premise openings to look forward to and then, of course, there’s our next big industry event, the Glazing Summit taking place on 12th October at Edgbaston Stadium and Conference Suite, Birmingham. It’s set to be attended by around 500 industry leaders from across the whole supply chain including installers, fabricators, glass companies and suppliers. I can’t wait! Chris

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER

A beautiful 300-year-old oak framed country house stands picture perfect in historical Cranbrook, Kent – but it’s the 13-year-old orangery that had sadly seen better days.

Suffering from leaks and a lack of maintenance, the 30ft orangery, constructed in 2010 on the south-facing elevation of the house, was in need of a full renovation. Award-winning conservatory refurbishment specialists Apple & Oak were tasked with replacing it with something befitting the traditional chocolate-box home but that also had all the modern benefits of comfort and performance.

Apple & Oak completed a full external preparation and treatment of the oak timber work, adding new leadwork, additional oak drip sections and, using leading glass specialists TuffX as their supplier, installing a new glass roof.

TuffX supplied 6mm bronze toughened glass with polished edges. During installation, working with the original rafters proved difficult as they were twisted and bowed from drying out over time, which meant the glass had to be tightened to the rafters carefully and with equal pressure.

The hard work paid off with a stunning orangery that is now fit for the future. “This project really shows what we can do, and cements our reputation as a leading company for bespoke conservatory restoration,” said Apple & Oak’s managing director Adam Brown.

Apple & Oak has been a TuffX customer for three years. “We chose TuffX as our suppliers because they have a wide range of products for homeowners looking to upgrade the thermal performance and usability of their conservatory. There is a good amount of choice but not so much it confuses customers. TuffX also provide a great sample pack so the customer can see the difference in appearance between the alternative types of glass as well as comparing thermal and UV performance.

“From an installers point of view, the oversize glass TuffX can provide – single conservatory roof glass units up to 4000mm – is really useful, as it looks great and reduces the potential for leaks. Plus TuffX offer great customer service and are always fast at providing quotes and pricing when needed.”

Part of the Hydro Group, a global leader in aluminium solutions, Technal has a strong track record of innovation and environmental responsibility and is one of CDW’s main profile suppliers.

Last year CDW received an award from Technal UK having ordered 44 tonnes of Circal 75R, Hydro’s high quality 75% recycled aluminium profiles, helping to saving 378 tonnes of CO2 emissions in the process.

CDW’s Group Chairman Jeremy Phillips, said: “At CDW Systems we believe that sustainability is not just good for the environment, but also makes good business sense and we are dedicated to providing our customers with the highest quality and most sustainable products possible.

“By partnering with Technal we are further strengthening our commitment towards a greener and more sustainable future. Technal enables us to provide our customers with a viable green and sustainable option and it’s even better that in using Technal Profiles that utilize Circal 75R alloy as much as possible we can contribute towards reducing our carbon footprint.”

As companies look for ways to reduce their environmental impact and improve the

sustainability of their operations, the partnership between CDW and Technal reflects a growing trend in the industry towards more sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.

“Circal 75R really reinforces the sustainability credentials of aluminium but there is much work still to do and we are firmly focussed on continuing this journey,” added Jeremy.

“Working with Technal is the perfect way to do this, thanks to our shared commitment to sustainability, and we are looking forward to this sustainable partnership continuing well into the future.”

In another move to improve sustainability, CDW systems is also now working with Alutrade, the largest independent aluminium recycling company and extrusion specialist in the UK, and Jeremy added: “Moving to Alutrade for dealing with our scrap and offcuts is perfect as it keeps it all within the industry and is a more traceable way of dealing with everything we have that can be recycled.”

Established in 1992, CDW Systems is one of the UK’s longest running aluminium specialists in the trade supply of aluminium window, door, and curtain wall products.

TEAMWORK PIVOTAL IN SUCCESSFUL TRANSFER OF SAFESTYLE UK TO LINIAR PROFILES

Liniar, the UK’s leading PVCu systems company and subsidiary of Quanex, is delighted to announce the successful transition of Safestyle UK plc to Liniar profiles. Safestyle is the UK’s largest fabricator of windows and doors into the retail market and announced the change to its shareholders in October 2022.

The Safestyle team underwent a management change in 2018 and has since been focused on a continuous improvement journey across all levels of the company’s operations, including a full review of its supply chain partners.

Prior to the switch, Safestyle UK carried out a lengthy due diligence process with Liniar to ensure risk mitigation. This included site visits and audits, allowing both parties to be assured of a good cultural fit and partnership.

Thanks to Liniar’s robust operational systems, capacity and forward planning, there have been no compromises necessary to the product range or processes to enable the Safestyle volumes of over 4,000 frames per week to be

serviced without any operational blips; since the start-up in January 2023, the whole Liniar customer base has continued to see On Time, In Full service levels above 99% every day. This has been possible thanks to a carefully planned and managed transition between both teams. Safestyle’s sales team have been trained on Liniar product familiarity, the service team have received on-site training at Safestyle HQ in Barnsley and the switch over was supported by the Liniar Technical team, who were on hand to address any challenges as they arose.

Liniar’s joined-up internal approach was key to the success of the switch, with production planning, product design, stock control, warehousing, transport, customer services, sales and marketing working together with the technical team on the ground to ensure nothing was missed and the Liniar operation continued as usual for all its other customers.

One of the main factors in the decision to switch to Liniar was the systems company’s continued investment in capacity through plant and machinery, explains Phil Taylor, Safestyle’s Procurement Director. “Safestyle has ambitious growth plans over the next few years, so we need partners that are able to support that growth. The relationship with Liniar has been developed over a long period of time and after such a smooth start-up we’re delighted with our decision.”

Andy Cadman, Safestyle’s Group Technical Manager, was responsible for the profile changeover internally and adds his praise: “The communication and interaction we’ve had with the whole Liniar team has been first class from the start. Any change of this nature obviously posed a huge potential risk to our business, but we’ve been reassured at

every stage – the two companies have worked seamlessly together to make it happen.

“The feedback from our production and quality teams has been overwhelmingly positive and the change has been managed well. We have noticed significant improvements in product quality and expect this will have a positive impact both in our manufacturing and field-based operations. This is particularly evident with the Liniar patented bubble gasket system which provides unrivalled performance and longevity.

Our fitters are also sending positive feedback and are impressed with both the quality and the ease of installing Liniar products!”

Another key factor in Safestyle’s decision is Liniar’s longstanding and ongoing sustainability credentials. Phil comments: “The recycling and environmental focus at Liniar is of great importance to Safestyle as we continue on our own ESG journey – it’s rapidly become one of our key criteria when choosing supply chain partners.”

So too is Liniar’s investment in new product innovation, with Andy adding, “We always want to be able to offer consumers the latest and most energy efficient products. Joining the Liniar family will give our team access to the full Liniar product range via its existing network, which will be of great benefit to us as we continue to grow.”

Martin Thurley, Group Managing Director at Liniar adds a final comment. “I’m delighted the transition to Liniar has been such a positive experience for the Safestyle team. The relationships formed across both our teams have proved that we are synchronised in terms of successfully and seamlessly managing such a large-scale project. We look forward to a mutually beneficial long-term partnership.”

UNIQUE WINDOW SYSTEMS DEVELOPS WITH DOORCO

It’s clear to see that continuous development, investment and improvement is a key driver for Unique Window Systems. The Leicester based fabricator has a long list of accolades as well as a proven track record with a loyal customer base. Ever evolving, Unique is ahead of the curve in terms of upcoming trends and market conditions and always looking to further improve. Partnering for success with like minded suppliers makes that progress a little easier, partners like DoorCo.

Mir Patel, Production Controller at Unique explains: “We have been a DoorCo partner for almost three years and during that time we been able to extensively develop and strengthen our composite door offering.

Initially we bought in prepped slabs but have recently invested in machinery to allow us to buy the blank slabs and prep in house, increasing profitability and reducing customer lead times. We supply into the trade and new build markets and our numbers are increasing each quarter which means we are switching to purchasing slabs in bulk to satisfy our requirements.

“DorCo is a very forward-thinking supplier and they spend time with their customers to ensure the products and service is always on point and the marketing support and content they provide is great. The assets

they have for their suppliers to use on social media are good quality and they have a variety of options for different marketing strategies. We have received a great deal of support in various elements of our composite door journey, which all helps to make our job a little bit easier.

“To assist in further growth we’ve recently opened a brand new, state-of-the-art showroom, showcasing our full composite door offering, alongside a variety of our uPVC and aluminium products too. DoorCo understands Unique’s future goals and are onboard in helping us achieve

those, which is all that you can ask of your supply partners.”

Ben Aspinall, Head of Technology and Marketing at DoorCo concludes: “Unique has done a fantastic job of evolving its composite door offering over a relatively short time against tough economic conditions, which is testament to the teams enthusiasm, drive and commitment. We know they have plans to further develop what they do to ensure their customers continue to get the very best quality and service and we look forward to supporting them in every way we can to help them achieve this.”

RENSON UK LAUNCHES INTEGRATED VENTILATION SOLUTIONS

Louvre specialist Renson UK has launched an innovative new ventilation solution to the market, following increased demand for more effective ventilation from better performing products.

Developed with a strategic approach to modern ventilation, Integrated Ventilation Solutions (IVS) is a custom-made, tested louvre design that offers a oneunit solution to guarantee both performance and premium aesthetics.

IVS is made to interface with the external façade via the window or curtain wall, and mechanical

connections, and with this system, the rear of the louvre is just as important as the front –hidden behind is the thermal protection, the plenums and the duct connections for mechanical installations.

Renson UK National Sales Manager Martin Daniels explains: “By recognising that the louvre isn’t just about what can be seen, but what is going on behind it, and the fact that it can be used as a component rather than just a product, we’re proud to have created this unique oneunit, combined solution with outstanding performance and reliability.”

Renson UK has spent the past 50 years designing, developing and manufacturing highperformance ventilation products, supplying fully tested, high-quality louvres and mechanical ventilation products for every application. These include removable louvre panels, door systems, cladding systems, specification trickle vents, and self-regulating window ventilators.

All products offer outstanding weathertightness and have been fully tested to the highest standards, having undergone rigorous BSRIA testing.

Martin concludes: “While modern buildings may be better insulated than ever, without effective ventilation, this can lead to poor indoor air quality. Add to that the fact that we are often approached by contractors having difficulties with louvres not performing as required due to multiple messy connections created onsite, and it’s certainly created a definite need for Integrated Ventilation Solutions.

“At Renson UK, we’re proud to have brought IVS to the market, and we’re confident that this unique, one-unit, and extremely effective solution will transform today’s louvre market.”

QUICKSLIDE AWARDED CHAS ACCREDITATION

Quickslide has been awarded its CHAS certificate of accreditation, the construction industry’s leading standard of health and safety accreditation in procurement.

CHAS – the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme – is the UK’s longestablished third-party guarantee of a company’s high standards of health and safety competence. While not a legal requirement for a business, it is often a prerequisite of tender processes, particularly for commercial house-building and public sector projects.

Quickslide underwent a thorough CHAS assessment of its health and safety management systems before being awarded the standard and issued with certification and the CHAS logo to display. The certificate and logo demonstrate proof of compliance against the CHAS standards in line with the requirements of Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) and UK health and safety legislation, and it is valid for one year.

VISTA OFFICE MANAGER SEES COMPANY MAKE NFA SHORTLIST

“CHAS accreditation is another way UK house builders know at a glance that they can have full confidence in our business,” said Quickslide’s Managing Director Ben Weber.

“CHAS has been around a long time and is well regarded in our industry. This accreditation recognises our commitment to high standards of health and safety, and gives assurance that we meet all the required standards and comply with current legislation.

“In addition, being a CHAS accredited supplier gives our customers a head start when it comes to tendering for work, helping avoid lengthy and time-consuming paperwork that might otherwise be required during the pre-qualification process.”

Edgetech is proud that their work is being recognised, as Managing Director Chris Alderson explains.

EPWIN WINDOW SYSTEMS’ EMPLOYEE RINGS FOR THE KING

Leading composite door manufacturer Vista Panels has been named a finalist in the 2023 National Fenestration Awards. Shortlisted in the ‘Office Manager of the Year’ category, the company’s office manager Nicola Brown has been with Vista for nearly three decades, overseeing a team of administrators.

“I’ve been with Vista for 27 years, working as an office manager for 10 of those years, and I’ve very much enjoyed looking after the team as well as our valued customers. It’s an honour to have been named an NFA finalist, and to be representing the company in this prestigious awards scheme,” she said.

Vista Managing Director Keith Sadler comments: “I’m very proud to see Nicola reach the finals of the NFA’s. She’s one of Vista’s longest serving members of staff, and is an incredibly valued member of the team. It’s this longevity of service that gives our customers the confidence that their business is valued and well looked after by experienced staff who understand their needs.

“We’re incredibly fortunate to have benefitted from her hard work and dedication over the past 27 years – I’m proud of everything she’s achieved, and look forward to working with Nicola to ensure Vista continues to thrive in the years to come.”

Launched in 2013, the NFA’s are the industry’s most inclusive awards event, decided completely by the participation of the industry itself.

Vista’s finalist spot follows last year’s shortlist position for Composite Door Manufacturer of the Year, four categories in 2021, and wins in both 2016 and 2019.

Keith concludes: “We’re delighted to have been shortlisted in the NFA’s once again, and I’d like to take this opportunity to wish our fellow finalists the very best of luck.”

To place your vote, visit www. fenestrationawards.co.uk. Voting closes on 29th September, with winners announced at a ceremony on 28th October.

Paul Adlington, Business Development Manager at Epwin Window Systems, was one of a team of bell ringers who rang the bells at St Mary’s Church in Astbury, Cheshire for an hour and a half as part of the ‘Ring for the King’ coronation celebrations on 6 May 2023.

Paul said: “It was an honour to take part in the historic coronation celebrations at my local church. I’ve been a campanologist – a bell ringer –for six months and this was a highlight for me.”

The Ring for the King initiative was organised by the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers and saw churches all over the country join in to create a national soundscape to mark the coronation.

Paul commented: “Church bells have rung out to celebrate special occasions and to signify special events for hundreds of years, so we were continuing a long tradition.”

“For decades, the Midlands has been a major hub for innovative manufacturing, and so to be named among the region’s leading businesses is a hugely gratifying experience for us.

“Edgetech prides itself on its legacy of pushing technical boundaries, improving the energy efficiency of Britain’s built environment, and providing an ethical, supportive workplace for dozens of employees in the Midlands area.

“We’re delighted to be shortlisted alongside some of the most respected manufacturers in the region, and look forward to hearing the final results!”

Winners will be announced at a glamorous black-tie event held at Birmingham’s Macdonald Burlington Hotel on Thursday 4th May 2023.

At St Mary’s Church in Astbury, a team of 30 people rang the bells for an hour and a half from 11:15am while Charles III was crowned at Westminster Abbey. It was the culmination of three months of training and practice for the event.

Paul has been Business Development Manager at Epwin Window Systems for seven years. He said: “There are a lot of similarities between business and bell ringing because success depends on team work. You need to work hard as an individual, but you also need to draw on the skills and expertise of the people around you. It was amazing to see everyone come together on 6 May 2023 to put the months of practice into action. It’s something I’ll always remember.”

SHEERLINE’S AWARD-WINNING S1 ROOF LANTERN JUST GOT EVEN BETTER

If you didn’t have time to visit Sheerline at FIT ‘23, here are all the updates you missed around the company’s awardwinning S1 Roof Lantern – just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, Sheerline has announced several new options to take the roof lantern range to the next level.

First, there’s a new 3 Way Option. This means the same sleek aesthetics as the 2 and 4 way designs, but with the option for bigger, architecturally led lantern configurations without the need for jack rafters. And with 13 roof styles to choose from (including pyramids), the possibilities are endless.

With Sheerline, a bigger roof lantern doesn’t mean compromising on the features

customers know and love. It’s still one of the UK’s most secure roof lanterns as security is built in to every Sheerline product as standard. Plus, an optional SBD upgrade is available for extra peace of mind.

The 3 Way Option still offers clean, super slim sightlines for an ultra-modern

PLASFOILS PARTNERS WITH LX HAUSYS TO DISTRIBUTE EXTERIOR FOIL PRODUCTS IN THE UK

Plasfoils, the leading distributor of foil materials, has signed an agreement with South Korean manufacturer, LX Hausys, to distribute its line of high-performance exterior foil products in the UK. The agreement was made official at the Interzum show in Cologne-Germany on 10 May.

LX Hausys’ exterior foil products are designed to meet the unique requirements of building exteriors, offering a diverse range of finishes and textures that accurately replicate natural materials such as wood, stone and metal. The products are also designed to provide superior protection against harsh weather conditions, UV radiation and other environmental factors.

“We are thrilled to partner with LX Hausys,” said Chris Green, Plasfoils’ business manager. “The partnership

brings together two industry leaders with a shared commitment to providing innovative solutions for the building and construction industry.

“Their products are wellknown in the market for their durability, performance and aesthetic appeal, so we are confident that the addition of these products to our portfolio will be well received by our customers.”

Patrick Ottens, director of sales and supply chain at LX Hausys, added: “We are excited to partner with Plasfoils. They have an exceptional reputation in the marketplace and we believe that our partnership will bring significant benefits to both companies.”

REAL Aluminium is launching a new website and also the latest addition to its bi-fold door range, the new Visofold Slim 1000 with a reduced profile.

The Visofold system is the UK’s most popular aluminium bi-fold door range and the profile of the new Visofold Slim 1000 has been reduced by 10mm to 122mm to make the glazed area even larger.

The system’s innovative design features polyamide thermal break technology that significantly reduces thermal transmittance by creating a barrier between the cold air outside and warm air inside, enhancing the systems overall ‘U’ value.

It is also rigorously tested to PAS 24:2022 for security performance as standard and exceeds the requirements for weather resistance to BS 6375 Part 1: 2009.

The Visofold Slim 1000’s new Quick Glaze Bead has been developed with combined gasket and trim which can be simply tapped into place on-site. This provides further thermal efficiency, makes the installation and glazing process faster, more straightforward and more cost effective.

Phil Walker, Managing Director of Real Aluminium, said: “We are very pleased to

latest technology – and is set to redefine customers’ expectations of roof vents. Homeowners with roof lanterns often wish there was a way to open one of the panels during the hot summer months, and now they can. All without compromising on S1’s unique low line modern aesthetics. SheerVent® is an intelligent, flush ventilation option. Designed to sit perfectly flush with the S1’s rafter bars. It does away with the need for ‘leak prone’ muntin bars meaning it’s more weathertight than its competitors. Using powered actuators that can be intelligently automated, SheerVent® brings roof vents into the 21st century at last. offer our customers the new addition to the Visofold range with the reduced profile that is sure to prove popular with householders.

“As the first of its kind to be built into a thermally broken aluminium system, it combines outstanding quality and value with class-leading performance and security.”

Available in a range of opening and folding configurations to suit any application, the Visofold Slim 1000 System doors can be folded internally or externally, to deliver a large, uninterrupted opening.

This door system is highly versatile, easy-tooperate, and capable of opening up an entire wall, while presenting an elegant, glazed façade when closed.

MARKET LEADING U VALUES

DOOR COLLECTION BY APEER

U values for the new Residence Door Collection by Apeer have now been confirmed following formal testing, with the results showing that solid doors in the twenty-model range perform considerably better than the much-lauded Passive House Institute standard, at 0.51 W/m2K (Passivhaus standard is 0.89 W/m2K and better). The figure confirms that The Residence Door Collection by Apeer, including doors with glass cassettes, will also comfortably outperform the anticipated, speculative requirements of the widely discussed Future Homes standard for new build homes.

The results of the formal testing place The Residence Door Collection by Apeer in the highest tier of thermal performing residential doors currently available for the UK home improvement sector. Determined by a commitment to produce a residential door range to complement the renowned Residence Collection windows, each door will be presented in a ground-breaking 120mm front-to-back format.

Traditional, contemporary and stable door designs are included in the range, with 78mm quadruple sealed glass units as standard where relevant. Construction utilises GPR skins around a high-density PU core, reinforced with aluminium anti-cut through security mesh embedded within the core of each door. Performance is further enhanced by weather deflectors, and Stormguard or full frame thresholds. Every door, including skins and glass units, will be manufactured by Apeer at its 120,000 feet2 Ballymena factory.

Aimed squarely at the premium sector, the range at launch comprises nine standard colours (seven grained and two smooth), with the availability of full sidelights and top lights now, with half lights and others to follow. High quality hardware and furniture will reflect the high-quality construction of the doors, whilst extra touches such as Ultion KeyTag-equipped, ‘Apple Find My’ trackable keys also completing a comprehensive standard specification. The Residence Door Collection by Apeer is the result of a collaboration aimed at producing a range of residential doors that complement the market leading Residence Collection windows, but which will be widely available on the open market through Apeer.

OF 0.51 W/M2K CONFIRMED FOR THE RESIDENCE

THE PERFECT MATCH – SEAMLESSLY COORDINATE ALUMINIUM AND PVCU

Incorporating products made using different materials into a wider project whilst ensuring consistency in style and colour can be tricky.

Leading systems house Liniar took this into account when developing its fully aluminium door system, Alumina, which comprises of bi-folding, French and residential doors.

With a background in design, development and fabrication, Secondary Operations Director Daryl Fradley explains how the Alumina system makes achieving consistent results much easier when working with aluminium and other materials side by side.

FOILED FINISH, CONSISTENT AESTHETIC

Daryl explains, “Alumina is ideal for larger openings due to its strength and can handle sashes up to 1.2m wide by 2.5m high, with door sets up to 8.5m wide available for supply in flat pack format. Many customers are looking to open up entire walls with either bi-folding or French doors, and need a solution that fully complements the project’s other windows, doors and roofline regardless of their material.

“As Liniar foils the aluminium profile used for Alumina at the same state-of-the-art onsite lamination facility as its complete range of PVCu windows, doors and roofs and sundry products you get a perfect colour-match.

“There are many woodgrain options available, so Alumina can complement traditional timber too. And Alumina doors offer a sleek, flush finish, making it perfect to complement Liniar’s PVCu

flush sash window ranges, including Resurgence. When combined, a similar look to traditional timber can be achieved, but with all the low-maintenance and thermal benefits of the Liniar range.

“What’s more, we can deliver bespoke colour combinations across Liniar’s Alumina and PVCu ranges, allowing installers to offer customers highly personalised products. Foiled aluminium also provides a ‘warm touch’ finish which drastically reduces the cold, metallic feeling users often find off-putting about aluminium doors. And whilst foiled aluminium does present various advantages, Alumina is also available in White, Black and Grey plain powder coated finishes.

“Besides the colour-matched options, all the detail on Alumina is exactly the same as Liniar’s PVCu sculptured windows and door system too, so a building fully fitted with Liniar windows could have matching largescale aluminium doors.”

EASY ORDERING & INSTALLATION

Daryl continues, “Alumina can either be supplied in bar length profiles, or readymade kits comprising the full door minus glass, ready to go straight into the aperture. We provide the glazing unit sizes, and installers can then use their local supplier. There’s a flexible bead option available, which requires no wedge gasket and takes a third of the time to fit compared with traditional aluminium beads. All this simplifies ordering, reduces labour costs and makes for quick convenient installation with minimal disruption to homeowners.

AIR FLOW AND SECURITY

Changes to Part F of the Building Regulations came into effect in mid2022 making the provision of adequate ventilation stricter and, in many cases, forcing the use of unsightly trickle vents on windows and doors.

“As Liniar foils the aluminium profile used for Alumina at the same state-of-the-art onsite lamination facility as its complete range of PVCu windows, doors and roofs and sundry products you get a perfect colour-match.”

Daryl explains, “With the Alumina system, externally concealed ventilation can be accomplished using an innovative 40mm add-on. This makes compliance with Building Regulations easily achievable, without spoiling the doors’ sleek appearance with trickle vents visible from the outside. “Alumina also offers high levels of security, having been tested to PAS24 and receiving Secured by Design accreditation. The Alumina bi-fold also beats the minimum requirements for both air and water tightness by more than double – even with a low threshold.”

Daryl concludes, “Liniar has designed and developed an extremely attractive, versatile aluminium system that is well suited to both residential and commercial projects. As part of the team responsible for fabricating Alumina kits, I can honestly say we take great pride in ensuring every door leaving the factory is finished to exacting standards.”

WARWICK NORTH WEST RENEWS SBD LICENCE

Leading trade fabricator

Warwick North West has sealed its commitment to customer security by renewing its SBD licence.

Having SBD accreditation means the Bootle-based company’s range of uPVC windows and doors are manufactured to offer the highest quality security –because they are endorsed by SBD, they can be trusted to afford maximum protection.

Director Greg Johnson comments: “We’ve been in this business for 25 years and we know how important security is for our customers.

This is why we’re pleased and proud to have renewed our SBD licence – having it means we can demonstrate our commitment to security in a clear and practical way.

“At Warwick North West we only use premium materials as well as hardware and locking systems when manufacturing our uPVC windows and doors. This ensures that our products achieve maximum security levels and are endorsed by Secured by Design.”

The company supplies a wide range of uPVC windows and doors, including Modus, a seven-chambered casement window that can achieve a U-value of 0.8.

Security elements are built into Warwick’s glazing products –for example, casement windows are designed to offer increased strength and security thanks to espagnolette and shootbolt locking, which give the end user ultimate peace of mind.

Secured by Design is owned by the UK Police Service

and works to improve the security of buildings and their immediate surroundings, with the specific aim to reduce crime and help people live more safely. SBD is the only way for companies to obtain police recognition for securityrelated products in the UK.

Greg concludes: “Secured By Design gives homeowners, installers and developers

the added peace of mind of knowing any accredited product has undergone a high level of stringent testing. Security is now becoming a top priority for homeowners, and at Warwick North West, we’re proud to successfully meet this increased demand.”

Leading aluminium bi-fold hardware supplier AT Precision has been confirmed as a finalist in this year’s National Fenestration Awards.

The Durham-based company is a specialist in aluminium bi-fold hardware, gaskets, security hardware and aluminium profile, and has been shortlisted in the ‘Door Component of the Year’ category.

Sales Director Michael Hewitt comments: “We’re delighted to have been shortlisted for this award, and would like to thank everyone who nominated us.

“Our team is dedicated to supplying the very best in aluminium bi-fold hardware, and this nomination is a testament to our hard work, as well as to the support of our valued customers.”

Working from a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, AT Precision supplies the Everglide range of bi-fold hardware, the Everseal range of gaskets, as well as security hardware, plastic ancillaries, and aluminium profile.

All products are compatible with all major systems, and because they’re made inhouse, come at a more affordable price compared to other suppliers.

The company also recently introduced a new Recycled Thermal Reinforcement (RTR) system to its production line – the new recycling scheme sees them picking up unused uPVC materials from customers, and processing this for the manufacturing of screw retention profile bars.

Michael concludes: “At AT Precision, we pride ourselves on supplying fabricators across the UK with affordable hardware, with no compromise on quality. Continual investment over the years has seen us improve our services, and we’re proud to have this recognised. A CLOSER LOOK AT SUSTAINABILITY CERTIFICATION

The thermal performance of window and doors is essential to creating energy efficient buildings – but beyond that sustainable building design requires transparency in the manufacture of products, and the materials used, to support overall environmental accreditation.

Having a view of all elements of a building project, including doors and window systems, allows projects to prove sustainable design by securing certification. Technical Services Director of Reynaers Aluminium UK, John McComb explains what accreditations matter most for sustainable building projects - and window and door systems.

One source of confusion over the environmental credentials of products is the number of ways their performance is assessed and certified. So, while top level targets for reaching net zero are clear, there can often be a number of questions about how to most accurately track the sustainability of buildings. This means that manufacturers need to do more in helping to clear this confusion.

WHAT SHOULD YOU BE LOOKING FOR FROM A MANUFACTURER?

Manufacturers should have a clear policy in place led by environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards, outlining an ethical position in terms of the environment, social impact, and the way the business is run.

Reynaers, for example, has put in place Reynaers Act, a sustainability strategy

covering the manufacture of products, operation of the business and all aspects of the value chain. A strong first step is to work with schemes such as the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), where organisations set firm, measurable targets to lower emissions in line with the Paris Agreement.

WHAT ACCREDITATIONS ARE AVAILABLE?

At the specification stage, attention needs to be paid to the products used and whether they meet criteria for key certifications. This should be covered by environmental product declarations (EPDs) and Cradle to Cradle certification.

For a verified account of the life of a product an EPD details eco-credentials, covering value chain, raw materials, manufacturing, use and end of life. Compliant with ISO 14025, the international standard for environmental labels, it gives a clear insight into the suitability of a product.

Cradle to Cradle certification focuses more directly on the product, with the aim to support a circular economy. This judges the safety of materials, energy and water usage, and social responsibility, but most importantly, that it can be reused at the end of its life.

PROJECT CERTIFICATION

Product-specific certification will put in place the foundations to secure overall sustainability accreditation. In the UK the most common accreditation is BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method - the first scheme in the country to recognise sustainable building design. Independent assessments use scientific data to measure factors including energy use, materials used, waste, air quality and wellbeing.

Alternatively, projects can apply for LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Developed in the United States, LEED is used globally, verifying certification through documentation. While both schemes hold high standards, BREEAM is more widely adopted in the UK, having been established here.

If the focus is thermal efficiency, Passive House verifies energy emissions from buildings. Windows and doors are key to Passive House accreditation as buildings should have no need for heat energy, instead naturally maintaining a comfortable temperature through insulation and ventilation.

Ideally sustainable projects would meet all relevant accreditations. In practice this would see Cradle to Cradle doors and windows, backed by EPD declarations, offering optimal thermal efficiency in a sustainable building.

This is essential for the future but can be done now. Reynaers already manufactures nine Cradle to Cradle systems and has committed to double the number by 2024, as well as adding digital passports to all of its products, and introducing recycled aluminium where possible. Reynaers has already secured an initial supply of low carbon Aluminium and is looking to systematically increase this supply in the near future. A number of Reynaers products also achieve U-values as low as 0.8w/m²K – the standard for Passive House. These all support sustainable building accreditation. The use of different certifications reflects the piecemeal, retrospective approach to climate change on a wider scale, but together these schemes implement the high standards needed to make a change, in most cases complementing each other to ensure sustainable design.

Building a sustainable economy is vital and with consumer demand and stronger governance supporting that, the need for clear accreditation is essential, so while many of these initiatives are currently voluntary this is most likely to change to a more uniform approach in future.

Amidst a veritable ocean of GRP-skinned entrance doors at this year’s FIT Show, Gerda Doors were alone in utilising steel and aluminium for the facings, mounted on engineered, aluminium frames and insulated using PU. Not that the use of metal skins was obvious from their appearance. For whilst the security performance of Gerda doors is impressive, the elegant, contemporary designs and quintessentially British Hawkstone door, belie their robust construction.

There was a real buzz around Quickslide’s ‘Engineering future innovations’ stand at this year’s FIT Show, as visitors flocked for the exclusive unveiling of the newest incarnation of its flagship Legacy vertical slider, which was revealed for the first time at the show. Featuring refined run-through horns and a new slim-line meeting rail, the enhanced Legacy VS will be available later this year. At just 37mm, the slim meeting rail is over a centimetre narrower than its standard counterpart and one of the slimmest and most traditionally styled on offer.

“Period detailing such as timber-look mechanical joints, seamless run-through sash horns, an authentic curvy ovolo frame and deep bottom rail make the Legacy VS almost indistinguishable from the traditional timber designs on which it is designed,” said Quickslide’s Managing Director Ben Weber.

“With this new slim-line meeting rail and the improved run-through horns it will be even harder to spot the difference between our Legacy VS and an actual timber sash window.”

A representative from Mighton, which has partnered with Quickslide, was also on hand

at the stand, with information about Avia’s secure intelligent sash fastener that has been launched as part of the Legacy VS range. Designed especially for sash windows, this lock can now be requested as part of the initial window spec. It enables homeowners to tell at a glance of their phone whether their windows are locked or unlocked, and alerts can be set up to be sent to Apple devices, providing peace of mind away from home.

Visitors were also able to find out about Quickslide’s new dual foils for sash windows, as well it’s new aluminium offerings, including heritage doors, AluSpace’s super slim aluminium interior door system and Indi-fold, the versatile aluminium slide-andstack door system exclusive to Quickslide.

Ben said: “This year’s FIT Show was hugely successful and enjoyable, welcoming so many familiar and new faces to our stand to see the future of fenestration.

“Our big news was the unveiling of our new, enhanced Legacy VS – but the whole show itself is a real legacy in our industry and always a highlight in our calendar. Well done to everyone who once again made the FIT Show such a great event.”

Tom Butler, Head of Sales & Marketing at the GGF explains: “We want to be more transparent and accessible to the glazing industry, so were keen to use the FIT Show as a chance to show visitors the extent of our collective support in meeting legislation, addressing the skills shortage, providing responsible recycling schemes, and making sure glazing remains part of the conversation when it comes to the green agenda.”

The GGF was pleased to share with visitors several new initiatives including the Skilled Pathways Scheme, Window of Opportunity research and a timber and pilot glass recycling programme to add to its already successful PVC-U and aluminium recycling schemes. Tom continues: “Home improvement companies

“We were genuinely thrilled that so many visitors to FIT took us at our word and came to our stand to find out more about us. It was great from our perspective to meet the people that are making and installing windows, doors, and conservatories every day. We learned a lot from them, and we are pleased to say that visitors were pleasantly surprised by the vast range of useful and practical services the GGF and its associate bodies now have to offer.

“Our staff were kept busy throughout the FIT Show, discussing all of the initiatives and support services that it provides for every level of the glass and glazing industry, and even taking bookings” concludes Tom, “but we look forward to supporting even more companies with these initiatives following the show.”

Distributed exclusively in the UK by Pioneer Trading, Gerda doors offer market leading thermal efficiency and security that is unrivalled at its price point. Crossrange specification includes multi-point locks, three bolt main locks, anti-burglary vertical bolts, anti-theft pins and optional auxiliary locks for added security. Thermal performance is as low as 0.8 W/m² K for solid doors, futureproofing against the widely predicted values anticipated to follow the next uplift in U value requirements within Approved Document L of the Building Regulations.

Attention to detail is emphasised through the standard provision of keys for every door. Gerda supplies two installer keys, with five homeowner keys supplied separately in a sealed pack. When the installation has been completed, the first use of by the homeowner of any key from the sealed pouch, renders the installer keys useless. This feature is believed to be unique amongst door manufacturers.

A further example of Gerda’s commitment to innovation is the Tedee smart lock, the world’s smallest smartphone-controlled door lock. Tedee provides the convenience of advanced smart-security but interestingly, utilises the existing lock cylinder and hardware, retaining conventional keylocking to provide reassurance to users. Gerda is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of locks and security products, producing ‘white label’ products for other brands. The partnership with Pioneer Trading has allowed Gerda to tailor its residential door range to suit British tastes in colours and designs as well as meeting and exceeding UK and Irish performance standards and compliance requirements. As an example, Gerda has developed the Hawkstone classic four panel, glazed door style for the UK market, in addition to the contemporary designs that have proved popular with UK buyers.

AT WORK, REST AND PLAY

AT WORK...

How did you get into this industry?

The short answer is, like many, by total accident. I had an established career in Banking but as our family installation business started to grow exponentially, I decided that more of my focus needed to be invested in growth and management, ensuring our business carried on growing safely.

Please give a brief resume of your career to date

I started my career in Financial Services and worked in many of the Lloyds Banking Group divisions.  I was particularly interested in the intricacies of regulation and governance so I was very involved in the management of the 3rd party suppliers that took care of the property portfolio for the Bank.

marketing etc.) is transferable to any industry?

I believe that with a positive and open mindset, anything can be learned and achieved.  Communication is often another key that I use to ensure that full engagement is realised when working on a piece of work but really, all external experiences can help our industry shape and grow.

This series in Glass News highlights the hopes and aspirations of women in the windows, doors, glass, roofs and hardware industry and will hopefully inspire more to make this their career.

mapped out or is it more about opportunism?

I guess I’ve got the luxury of being my own boss, owning my own business, so my career is at a stage where I invest back in people.  I like to share experiences and offer support where it’s required.

Looking ahead, where would you like to be in a) 5 years’ time and b) 10 years’ time?

My parting gift to the GGF will be established procedures for maintaining good corporate governance but for the longer term, expansion and growth of my own business will feature heavily during this time.  I’m always learning, and actively seek to learn, so personally developing a growth plan for my business and executing it, is going to be a fun and challenging journey for me.

AT REST...

Away from work, what is your focus?

I try not to focus on much when I’m at home. I have a busy life outside of work too and so I try to relax and switch off when I can. I’m a bit of a thrill seeker and love sightseeing so getting to the coast or visiting a city is always something I enjoy doing.

AT PLAY...

Do you achieve the work/life balance you would like to?

Absolutely! It takes a lot of work, to draw a boundary between home and work so because my work address is so close to home I have a rule that when I’m home, work stops so that helps with a physical stop to keep the balance.

If money and leisure time were no object, what would you really like to do for yourself or your family?

Travel! See the world! Learn more about different cultures and more history. I love facts and experiences so immersing myself in different cultures is something I find so fulfilling.

ATT FABRICATIONS CHOOSES SHEERLINE FOR TRANSFORMATIONAL ARCHITECTURALLY LED PROJECT

County Durham-based ATT Fabrications have collaborated with THF Homes to enhance an architecturally led new build design using Sheerline’s range of advanced, thermally efficient aluminium windows and doors.

This impressive new build project features three sets of Prestige Bi-Fold Doors, two Prestige Composite Door Frames and 15 Classic Beadless Windows – which were specified in a flush frame with stepped sashes. These products were selected because they fit the client’s brief of being attractive, thermally efficient, and featured the super slim sightlines Sheerline is known for.

Another feature that helped Sheerline’s Classic Beadless Window stand out from the competition is the patented jointing method. This unique method of construction simplifies the fabrication process, eliminating the need for crimping and specialist machinery. While also reducing the misalignment of frames and locking in quality.

As well as helping the client achieve a sleek, modern, airy aesthetic, this combination of products was selected to ensure there was a consistent look across the property. Sheerline prides itself on offering a perfectly matched range of aluminium windows, doors, bi-folds, and roof lanterns.

Perfectly matched doesn’t just refer to the brand’s styling, it also extends to colours (with custom and dual options available), high performance U-values and energy ratings, security, and guarantees. When a manufacturer reaches this level of consistency, it gives homeowners extra peace of mind. All products on this project were chosen with Cream exteriors and Hipca Gloss White interiors.

ATT Fabrications has been trading as a large, high-volume fabricator for many years. Based in the North East of England, the company supplies large DIY chains, trade, as well as directly to the public from its’ factory in County Durham.

The company manufactured all the windows and doors supplied and were particularly impressed with Sheerline’s product range, short lead times, and the fact the team were extremely responsive to their enquiries, offering a high level of support at all stages of the project.

Providing an agile and responsive service is a key part of Sheerline’s ethos and strategic approach to customer service. The brand provides online and on-site support to fabricators and installers, as well as advice to homeowners to ensure all its’ customers get the most out of their products and benefit from the unique features of the Sheerline range.

Andrew Devlin, Managing Director of ATT Fabrications, commented: “We’re delighted to have supported THF Homes as part of a project to design and build a stylish home on an exclusive development in the picturesque village of Lanchester, County Durham. The property needed the wow factor as all the homes in this development are valued at £1 million plus.”

“This task was made easier thanks to Sheerline and its’ Classic System because it suits the traditional style of the build while adding a contemporary feel. Both THF and the installers appreciated the fact the windows came pre-glazed using the beadless system,” he added.

Roger Hartshorn, Sheerline CEO, commented: “That ATT Fabrications chose Sheerline for this project is fantastic – the finished result is a refined, modern looking home that encapsulates everything we offer as a brand. That our aluminium windows, doors, and bi-folds were selected highlights the versatility of our products.”

“Our proven ‘whole-house’ solutions enhance new build and renovation projects aiming to achieve an ultra-modern, super sleek aesthetic, but we’ve also got products that provide a subtle upgrade for traditional, character, and heritage properties, so

homeowners can retain their property’s charm without compromising on thermal efficiency or security.”

DIVERSE DOOR COLOUR TRENDS

Glass News was delighted to recently meet DoorCo’s new marketing Manager, Ellie Pool and discuss what’s currently hot in door colour with the leading composite door supplier.

I’ve recently joined DoorCo as Marketing Manager and am hugely excited about my new role. My passion and experience is in marketing and over the years, thanks to my work in agencies, this has spanned multiple industries including food, fashion, beauty, events, B2B, finance, medical and more. One thing that’s synonymous across all sectors is the use of colour in design. It represents so much; colour has the ability to inspire, excite, soothe, heal and even upset. There’s also lots of research that suggests colours can be associated with personality types.

For example, Green – my favourite and the colour of my own front door – is said to be a sign of loyalty and affection, and more pastel tones like Sage, induce calm. Blue symbolises strong qualities like trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence & intelligence. The timeless and traditional Black, represents creativity. It’s elegant, powerful, and prestigious, and will never go out of fashion. Yellow is the colour of sunshine, and although may be a bold choice for some, actually represents a friendly and nurturing attitude, warm and welcoming. Red offers a touch of glamour and intimacy, but is also commanding, dynamic, and engaging. White is associated with light and goodness, safety and cleanliness. Simple, crisp and pristine, it supports a minimalist look. And finally, Grey is subtle, stylish, timeless and classic. Another one that won’t go out of fashion.

While many may only be thinking of creating a more welcoming, more on trend entrance to their home that they can be proud of, these subliminal meanings really interest me. Subconsciously or not, choosing the colour of a front door is hugely emotive and I’m impressed with the variety of colour options DoorCo has in its PAiNT Collection. There truly is something for everyone.

INFORMED TRENDS

One of the things that also excites me about DoorCo is the amount of data we produce – a strategic marketeer’s dream! Since day one, I have been pouring over the stats and learning what trends are currently moving through the business. It really sparks my imagination and creativity and it’s great to see some of these colours that have positive meanings are popular.

BLUE

Having a look at what’s been popular so far this year and tying in with what we can see trending in our PAiNT range, we’ve had plenty of requests for custom blues including RAL 220 70 20 - a lighter, turquoise blue, RAL 5014 which is a lovely

grey-toned, mid blue shade, and the much deeper and darker, RAL 5020. Blue is a prevalent door colour and it’s great to see the from the numbers of PAiNT shades and custom requests, this remains as popular as ever.

GREEN

I’m a real fan of green so I get particularly excited to see orders for Sage, Paradise Green and Emerald PAiNT colours, as well as the custom colour requests we’ve had recently, such as RAL 6005 which is a lovely dark green.

INTERIOR COLOURS

Anthracite Grey is always hovering around the top of the charts, although there are other shades of grey like Slate, Agate, Shadow and Silver Grey making a regular appearance. What’s interesting is the rise in orders of Anthracite Grey on both sides of the door. The trend of having both sides of the door painted in the same shade, or an internal shade to compliment the hallway is a trend I think will just go from strength to strength. We’re seeing some many variations of this coming through to our paint line and you can just imagine what an impact these beautiful doors are going to have on the homes they are destined for.

Working at DoorCo in the distribution and manufacturing space is a fresh challenge for me. It’s a fast-paced business with constant product innovation taking place and everyone is passionate about the business. I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to exercise my technical, strategic and creative mindsets with the marketing at DoorCo, supporting our customers with creativity and helping set new trends in the composite door market.

As part of its continuous improvement cycle, Distinction Doors has introduced a quality control mark for its doors.

This initiative underpins the company’s commitment to producing premium high-quality doors, consistently, and gives assurance to its customers.

There are now three quality control areas at the Distinction Doors manufacturing facility in Barnsley. Each area is allocated a colour coded stamp dependent on their stage in the manufacturing operation – red for prep, green for paint, and black for glazing. Staff within these areas are tasked with conducting the final quality control inspection before the product is sent to the next process or despatch.

For greater reassurance, every quality inspector has a unique identification number. This number is for internal use only, but it enables Distinction to pinpoint exactly who conducted and passed each quality control inspection.

The quality control mark was developed following an extensive Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA). After which, process checks, test methods and minimum

product standards were trained out to staff – including the new quality control exercise. Associate Director of Quality for Distinction Doors, Jamie Kerrigan, says:

“Quality assurance can require a change of culture. Everyone takes pride in their work. This initiative encourages the operatives to take greater responsibility and care with the products they handle and produce.

“I am pleased that so far, the feedback has been extremely positive. Staff are happy with the accountability. So too are our customers. They are responding well to the improved process and like the visual reminder.”

Jamie leads all aspects of quality and continuous improvement. He and his team of quality and improvement specialists are responsible for implementing and managing continuous improvement, and proactive, reactive, and legislative quality assurance throughout the business.

DIRECT TRADE WINDOWS ADDS SLIMLINE SLIDING POCKET DOORS TO PRODUCT PORTFOLIO

Leading aluminium window and door manufacturer Direct Trade Windows is right on trend for 2023 with its new range of slimline sliding pocket doors. The Slough-based firm aims to meet ever-increasing customer demand for the stylish and elegant external pocket doors by introducing the Cor Vision range from Cortizo. These sliding pocket doors are the epitome of minimalist luxury living, giving homeowners a cool and subtle way of handling their space.

With a very low U-value of 1.3 W/m²K and 20mm sightlines, these pocket doors are exceptionally strong, but are also

lightweight and can be supplied in various bespoke configurations.

Sliding pocket doors are installed with recessed or ceiling tracks to ensure that the tracking doesn’t create a raised threshold or tripping hazard. They can also be installed with kick panels to prevent accidental damage.

Direct Trade Windows Director AJ Hassanali comments: “We’re really pleased to be adding these excellent slimline pocket doors to our range of products. They’re right on trend because they make any space feel light and luxurious. Because they slide into their own pocket, dividing the space

only when necessary, they have that ‘wow factor’ we’re all looking for when it comes to home improvements.

“The pocket doors complement our existing range very well. Aluminium has come into its own in recent years, as installers and homeowners see the benefits of a strong but aesthetically pleasing material that is also fully recyclable.”

HURST DOORS’ INSTALLATION OF THE MONTH COMPETITION SHOWCASES THE BEST OF THE BEST

Leading composite door supplier Hurst Doors has been highlighting the work of its highly skilled network of installers with its Installation of the Month competition.

In October, the competition was won by Image Windows and Doors in Essex, who fitted a stylish and contemporary composite door in fashionable Anthracite Grey.

Director James Last comments: “We were absolutely delighted to win the Installation of the Month competition. Hurst are a fantastic supplier, and homeowners love the huge range of door styles and colours we’re able to offer from them.”

In November, the winners were husband and wife team Chiltern Home Improvements.

They fitted two tasteful Chartwell Green cottage doors with diamond glazing on a pair of stately red-brick cottages built in 1844. Tracy Brewer of Chiltern comments: “We’ve been in business since 1998 and consistently used Hurst since 2001, which shows you how much we love their products and service!”

In December, Purbeck Windows of Dorset fitted a refined cottage composite door in an attractive Dusty Grey.

Director Mark Spicer comments: “We carried out this installation on a friend’s house, so I was really pleased it won! Hurst are so good to work with,

and they’re a very valued partner for Purbeck”

Finally, in February, the competition was won by Majer Windows, who fitted a stylish and contemporary Bohemia door with Murano glass in fashionable Dusty Grey.

Director Alan Boultwood comments: “Hurst are a fantastic supplier, and homeowners love the huge range of door styles and colours we’re able to offer from them.”

The competition will continue to run for the next 6 months and Hurst are keen to encourage more installers to enter.

For the competition, installers of Hurst Doors can enter by sharing their installation images on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, tagging Hurst Doors, or alternatively, by sending their images to marketing@hurstdoors.co.uk

QUALITY AND UNDERSTANDING - REAPING THE BENEFITS THROUGH COLLABORATION

Collaboration with like-minded businesses, coupled with a consistently high quality of service are the mainstays behind Solar Calibre Doors’ notable performance, since its launch three years ago. One of the most successful partnerships is with The Window Company (Contracts) resulting from a visit to the Solar Calibre Doors factory by its Chair, David Thornton, “We started using Solar Calibre Doors as one of our main suppliers for replacement composite doors last year –

following my visit to their factory last spring” said David Thornton.

“We now install large volumes of their doors on social housing contracts for the likes of Moat Housing and Basildon Council and continue to be impressed with the quality and service we receive.

“We routinely compare snagging rates on composite doors from all our suppliers, and Solar Calibre

Doors are consistently the very lowest, at just 0.03% over the past 10 months. That’s a massive 72% less than another main supplier and more than justifies our decision to bring them on board

in 2022. On the rare occasions that we have had a problem, the production team at Solar Calibre Doors have investigated thoroughly and provided us with a clear and fair resolution.

“Almost as important as the quality though is the obvious understanding at Solar Calibre Doors of the constraints we operate under as a contractor in the social housing sector. We work to long term contracts at pre-negotiated rates, and we need our suppliers to do the same, or we risk losing what are already very slim margins. We have been

able agree a fixed pricing structure with Solar Calibre Doors for the next 12 months, which means we won’t be faced with price rises halfway through a contract.”

Gareth Jones, Managing Director of Solar Fabrications Limited added, “We are privileged to be supplying The Window Company (Contracts) as they are well known throughout the industry for their success and professionalism, having received multiple awards over the years. This makes their endorsement of Solar Calibre Doors even more special.”

LET’S BE SPECIFIC ABOUT SEALANTS

INTERIOR CONDITIONS

While there are a range of sealant products available that could be used for glazing installations, many of the products will not be completely suitable for the application. Using such a product can result in poor performance and call-backs to address issues, even on relatively recent jobs.

First and foremost, it is important to ensure that the sealants you are using are of a high-quality. While it may be tempting to look for a lower cost option, especially with increased costs and pressure on profit margins, this can be counter-productive. Cheap products will generally not last as expected, even when applied correctly in ideal conditions. This can become a serious issue if the failure of a low-quality sealant is assumed by the customer to be poor workmanship and the reputation of the business is damaged as a result.

One of the reasons why low-cost silicone sealants may fail is that they are often bulked out with other chemicals that evaporate as it cures, causing the sealant to shrink and not form a strong bond. The best way to ensure a quality product is to only use those developed and manufactured by trusted and reputable brands.

In addition to the quality, when selecting a sealant or sealants specifically for glazing installations there are a number of factors that must be considered.

WEATHER

For exterior applications one of the biggest challenges is, of course, the weather conditions that the glazing, and therefore the sealant, must withstand over its lifetime. It will be exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun as well as wind, rain and significant changes in temperature.

The sealant needs to have the durability and weather resistance to withstand these conditions season after season. This is now more important than ever as the weather in the UK looks set to become more extreme with higher summer temperatures, more intense rainfall and more frequent storms.

Similarly, the sealant used on internal surfaces will need to meet specific requirements based on the conditions inside. As homes, workplaces and other buildings become increasingly airtight to ensure energy efficiency, humid air and the condensation it causes can be a particular challenge. Any frequent or prolonged presence of condensation can allow mould and bacteria to form and spread. This is also a concern in environments that are naturally more humid due to how the space is used. For example, leisure centres and swimming pools. This issue can be addressed by selecting a high-quality sealant that contains an effective fungicide to prevent the growth of mould.

MOVEMENT RESISTANCE

The nature of glazing means that there will always be movement between the glass and frame and between the frame and the rest of the building. Changes in temperature will also cause the frame and glazing to expand and contract over time. The sealant needs to maintain a degree of permanent flexibility to ensure it can accommodate these movements over the long term.

SUBSTRATE SUITABILITY

Furthermore, it is important to consider the substrates that the sealant will be applied to. For glazing applications this can be a wide variety of materials. For example, in addition to the glass of the glazing, the frames may be manufactured from PVC-U, aluminium, steel or timber depending on the project or area of the building. The sealant used around the frame may also need to adhere effectively to brick and stonework as well as wide variety of façade materials including modern composites.

WHICH TYPE OF SEALANT TO CHOOSE?

There are several different broad types of sealant, which are based on different chemistry, and therefore have differing properties. Considering all the performance requirements for glazing applications, silicone-based sealants are ideal. A highquality silicone sealant will deliver a flexible seal, adhesion to the wide range of common substrates and excellent resistance to the effects of weather, UV and changes in temperature. This means it will not crack, shrink, craze or discolour for a longerlasting finish that retains its appearance and performance in the long-term.

However, it is recommended that professionals look for a silicone product

that has been developed specifically for use on glazing installations, such as Trade Mate Glazing Seal and Trade Mate Frame Seal. By choosing a glazing-specific sealant professionals can be sure that it has been formulated and tested with the specific materials and conditions in mind.

Another type of sealant that will be especially suitable for certain applications is MS Polymers. Sometimes referred to as hybrid sealants, MS Polymers have the permanent flexibility, versatility and UV and weather resistance of silicone products while also being over-paintable. Due to the formulation of MS Polymers, they can also be successfully applied in a wider range of conditions.

While MS Polymer products typically cost more than a silicone alternative,

they can provide a solution to specific project requirements. For example, it may be necessary to match the colour of the sealant to the specific finish of the window or door, which is simple to achieve with a MS Polymer based product, such as Trade Mate Paintable Frame Seal, that can be painted over in the required colour. Also, MS Polymers are ideal for repairs as there is no need to fully dry the surface before it is applied.

While there are a range of sealants on the market, choosing products from trusted brands that have been developed specifically for the type of application will ensure a long-lasting high-performance result.

LEAD GENERATION - FOCUS SHOULD BE ON APPOINTMENTS, SAYS COMPANY BOSS

The managing director of a home improvement leads company has said that while times are tough, and with the costof-living crisis still biting, a much better approach for installers is to seek booked appointments rather than leads.

Installers are turning to lead generation companies to help them bring in business. However, what many installers don’t realise is that it’s not always about quantity and price according to Andy Royle, co-founder and MD of Leads 2 Trade, the UK’s leading provider of double-qualified home improvement sales leads for double glazing, conservatories and conservatory roof replacements

“Installers think that if they’re getting good volume from their lead generator then they must be getting good service,” Andy said. “But how many of those leads will they fix up a survey or appointment with?

How many will they convert into an order?

Installers must measure their sales leads on quality, value and true cost of sale.”

A better approach, Andy argues, is not to concentrate on volume but to look towards sales appointments instead.

“While the quantity that some lead generator firms provide looks great, these web form enquiries are sold for £30 and are sold multiple times, they haven’t been telephone qualified, and on most occasions, there is no returns policy on the lead.

“We recognised this and took the focus off lead volume and onto sales appointments, introducing our ‘no pitch, no fee’ booked appointment service for our members. “

Leads 2 Trade makes sure that the appointment booking is only delivered to one other company, so the installer has more chance of winning the work, and as

GO PREMIUM WITH DIRECT TRADE WINDOWS

they only pay for the lead if they sit and pitch it, there is zero risk.

“Instead of buying the amount of leads you want and then having to convert those leads into appointments, installers are buying the same number of booked appointments, against set criteria so they are guaranteed to be in front of the consumer to sell their products,” Andy said.

“It also provides a much better cost per sale. Instead of buying 50-60 leads for £30 each and getting a one in five conversion rate, our booking appointments achieve a 1:3 conversion to sale with a cost per sale as low as 8%, saving installers both time and money.

“Installers should not think of it as a sales lead anymore, but a booked appointment.”

Kent-based double glazing company Mayfair Installations says that Leads 2 Trade’s booked appointment service is key to their business and have been so impressed that they have recently added a conservatory account alongside windows and doors.

Mayfair’s MD Mark Thompson said: “We found out about Leads 2 Trade through internet searching and they stood out from us ahead of all the other lead generating companies due to their professionalism, the fact that they book qualified appointments at a set time, and the value for money from them.

“Being a relatively small company, the booked appointments mean we don’t have to take the time and the stress of contacting the customer and sorting a convenient time.”

In a rapidly changing market, it’s tough out there for installers. AJ Hassanali, Director of Direct Trade Windows, shares his advice…

It’s hard to imagine that three years ago, the UK was in the midst of a global pandemic. While Covid-19 dominated the headlines, the industry was in the throes of a very welcome home improvement boom, thanks to homeowners investing money that could no longer be spent on holidays abroad and other luxuries, into improving their properties.

Sales for conservatories, extensions, garden rooms, new windows and doors soared, and despite the supply chain issues and price increases that resulted, for the glazing industry, it was a trading period like no other. Today of course, the market is looking very different, and with a cost of living crisis facing us head on, home improvements have dropped down the list of spending priorities for many homeowners. It’s certainly made things more difficult for installers – so how can they stay ahead?

PREMIUM PRODUCT OFFERING

My advice to installers would be to try to focus on serving the higher end of the market, as this is a sector I see continuing to flourish.

While there are of course rising energy bills and other growing expenses taking priority, there will always be higher earning households who still have the money to spend, and generally, it’s this group that would rather invest in premium products. And being a supplier of premium aluminium home improvement solutions, we are well positioned to offer the products to help.

Working from a state-of-the-art factory just outside London, we exclusively manufacture steel-look aluminium products.

These include a wide range of Smart products, including AluSpace internal screening, Alitherm 300 casement windows, tilt & turn windows, Heritage doors and casement windows, Visofold 1000 and 6000 bi-fold doors, VS600 vertical sliding sash windows, and the Aliver orangery roof and roof light system.

We also manufacture and supply a range of Cortizo products, including the Cor Vision sliding door, 4600 lift and slide door, and 4700 sliding door.

All our products have been designed to offer premium luxury, such as the Aluspace

internal screening system, which gives architects, interior designers and installers the opportunity to create space and light in any internal environment.

The system can be used to divide both residential and commercial spaces of any shape and size, while at the same time providing an effective acoustic barrier. And with a choice of hinged single and double doors, as well as pivot and sliding options to accompany the fixed glazed screen, the flexible and versatile system provides almost limitless possibilities.

The VS600 vertical sliding sash windows, meanwhile, achieve an A-rating for energy efficiency, are fully tested to ensure maximum weather resistance, and can be tailored to complement any style. These premium windows are rapidly growing in popularity, and are therefore an excellent way of helping our trade customers get ahead.

With such a wide product offering, we’re able to cater for an equally large demand for premium products, ensuring our trade customers are always able to get what they need, when they need it, and stay ahead of the competition.

CUSTOMER SUPPORT

In addition to product quality, it’s vital that suppliers help their customers where they can, which is why we’ve invested heavily in software solutions in order to help our trade customers take the lead.

These include a quoting app that can be used to provide installers with sales support and infrastructure, and job management software which allows clear visuals of ongoing factory processes at any given time, enabling us to provide exact and guaranteed delivery times to our customers.

It’s certainly a changing market out there, but I believe that with strategic investments in premium products, trade installers will continue to flourish, with Direct Trade Windows at hand for support all the way.

If you’re an installer looking for a reliable supplier of high-quality products combined with dedicated support, give us a call today – we’d love to hear from you.

SIGMA HINGE FAMILY SET TO EXPAND

VBH, the hardware manufacturer behind the greenteQ range, has announced that the Sigma door hinge ‘family’ is being bolstered by two exciting new additions this spring.

Sigma is the umbrella name for the entire greenteQ resi-door hinge range that, until now, includes three models to suit PVCu and composite doors.

Firstly, the company has recently launched a new butt hinge for aluminium entrance doors. The hinge will carry sashes weighing up to 90KG and is available in white, black, anthracite grey and F1 silver anodised finishes. VBH advise that no jigs are required to fit the hinge, known as the Sigma Aluminium Butt Hinge.

Following closely behind is the Sigma Velocity Hinge for rebated doors. The 2-knuckle construction T-Hinge design provides an alternative to the popular Sigma Flag hinge, which VBH advises is still immensely popular with fabricators and installers.

IONIC ELECTRONIC LOCK BY FULLEX-AI TO ITS RANGE

Independent hardware

supplier Total Hardware has just added the new IONIC Electronic Lock by Fullex-ai to its range. Suitable for timber, aluminium and composite doors using a 45mm lock backset, the smartphoneoperated lock is ideal for both domestic properties and social housing.

Chris Pell, General Manager at Total Hardware, said: “The new IONIC door lock is the next generation of smart technology. It’s secure, easy to use and gives our customers a competitive choice advantage.”

factors mean the lock has impressive appeal for the social housing sector.

The lock comes with the reassurance of the Fullex name. As the leading brand of high-security multi-point locking systems for doors, it’s one of the most recognised names in the fenestration and specification markets and has a well-deserved reputation for product excellence.

The IONIC Electronic Lock is the perfect example of Total Hardware’s commitment to keeping its finger on the pulse and having the products to meet market demand. It’s the latest addition to a range that includes industry-leading hardware brands, as well as its own exclusive range of premium hardware, Quantum and Superior 25.  The company has a complete customer service focus too. It works hard to maintain high stock levels to ensure it can keep pace with demand and offers rapid turnaround times from quotation to despatch, including reliable next day deliveries nationwide.

Building on the jigless theme of the Aluminium Butt Hinge, once Velocity’s frame part has been positioned and fixed using a jig and the supplied screws, the sash part is ‘self-locates’ prior to fixing. This, coupled with the fact that the hinges are supplied pre-assembled means that fitting is reportedly very quick.

Rob Norman, Business Development Director at VBH, says, “Like the original Sigma Flag, Velocity carries 100KG doors and provides full 3-D adjustment. It’s been developed in response to calls for a compact unit that speeds up production times on the bench.”

Sigma Velocity has been successfully tested to PAS24:2022 as part of a PVCu door assembly, and is approved for use on installations that are covered by the Q-secure consumer security guarantee.

Velocity is available in eight colours of VBH’s greenteQ Suite of matching residoor, patio door and window furniture, which comes with a minimum ten-year mechanical and surface guarantee on all finishes.

Rob adds, “The greenteQ ethos is all about giving our customers great quality, useful features and choice. The Sigma family is no exception to that.”

To find out more about greenteQ Sigma Velocity or Aluminium Butt Hinges, or any other hardware in the VBH range, contact the company on 01634 263263, email at sales@vbhgb.com, or send them a Tweet @vbhgb.

The IONIC Electronic Lock is quick and easy to install, making it perfect for factory fitting, and is operated using a simple-touse smartphone app. Available in white and anthracite grey, it has a timeless design that looks good on all properties.

An infinite number of users can be registered on the app and up to 1,500 users on the lock itself. The app has an administrator function that includes an access protocol feature that shows which users have opened the door. Together, these

Chris concluded: “We’ve built our business on offering the products our customers need with the service they have a right to expect. We’re delighted to be adding the IONIC Electronic Lock to our range and confident that our customers will be impressed by the quality and performance of the product and the added-value benefits it offers.”

A SMARTER APPROACH TO SECURITY

David Jennings, CEO of UAP, explains how customer insight and advances in technology are delivering more secure and user-friendly electronic locks.

No longer considered a luxury or ‘nice to have’, smart technology is now an expectation in the home. More and more people are turning to smart devices to make their lives easier and to feel safer and better connected. In line with this trend, electronic locks are growing in popularity across the residential sector.

In response, technology has quickly evolved, and this has brought a variety of new products to market, giving fabricators, installers and end users more choice than ever before. When selecting an electronic lock, there are however, several factors to consider to make sure it meets consumers’ changing needs.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

Ensuring the highest levels of security will always be a top priority for homeowners and residents. But in an increasingly fast-paced world, populated by tech-savvy consumers, an electronic lock must tick other boxes too.

Improving the overall customer experience is crucial and that requires a lock that is both very easy to use and flexible. These factors are also important for those who own or manage properties such as social landlords and those working in the private rented sector.

From our own research with customers, flexibility means being able to tailor a smart lock to individual needs. To satisfy the demand for ease of use, people want

to be able to shut their door and for it to automatically lock, without having to lift a lever and turn a key. If the door lock is operated using a smartphone App, that needs to be simple too, allowing people of all ages to use it without an issue.

This simplicity extends down the chain to fabricators and installers. Removing the need for complex wiring is essential to deliver a quicker installation, especially across multiple residential properties.

To make sure an electronic lock is ultra-secure, some technologies can be counterproductive. Biometrics such as fingerprint readers for example, can increase the risk of hacking. Earlier this year, research revealed that off the shelf hardware combined with minimal hacking knowledge could harvest fingerprints via a consumer smart lock, largely due to a lack of dedicated secure storage.

The rise in keyless car theft has also left some consumers worried about the

effectiveness of electronic door locks that use the same system.

NEXT LEVEL TECH

Advances in technology and new approaches to design are helping to address these needs and expectations. The IONIC for example, is a new electronic lock that follows five years of research and development.

The design is based on the Fullex Crimebeater lock and can be operated using a smartphone App, a fob, push button on the inside, or a thumb turn. A simple interface hides complex technology built into the App. This enables several access functions, including the ability to add new users and set times for entry at the click of a button.

A wireless unit, which fits easily to a door frame, connects to a control unit and is used to power the Iock. Customers can either use

a USB wire with a plug or a power pack to charge the lock via this system. If there was a power cut, a charged lock can operate for up to four weeks without a power supply.

The lock also comes with an override key which can be used in an emergency and is ideal for owners and managers of rented properties. When a tenant leaves, this key and the main brain* can be replaced within 10 minutes, requiring no special skills. Any existing fob can be reprogrammed in seconds.

Using our extensive knowledge of mechanical and car vehicle technology, the IONIC has been developed to offer the most advanced security encryption on the market. The fob codes can’t be stolen by intercepting the signal in the same way that thieves target keyless cars. This is because every fob has been manufactured with two million rolling codes, making every transmission unique.

Face recognition further enhances security and no server is needed to control the lock which holds no data.

As a 45mm backset multipoint lock, the IONIC can be installed on timber, aluminium and composite doors of any thickness between approximately 44 to 54mm. No complex wiring is needed making the product as simple to fit as any multipoint lock.

Once installed, the risk of any future maintenance or troubleshooting is minimal. The electronics have been developed by a specialist in Hungary which manufactures printed circuit boards for the car industry. Each one is tested multiple times before being shipped to the UK. This not only maximises reliability, but ensures EU GDPR compliance.

ADAPTING TO CHANGE

As technology continues to rapidly evolve, electronic door locks are more effective and accessible than ever before. Thanks to customer insight, advanced electronics and testing, smart locks are now more tailored to consumer needs, providing safer, more secure, and flexible security solutions that are quick and easy to install.

NEW GREENTEQ HARDWARE CATALOGUE

Hardware manufacturer and supplier, VBH, has published the latest edition of its popular greenteQ hardware catalogue.

The catalogue features items from the company’s own greenteQ hardware brand, which has expanded rapidly since its launch in 2009.

At over 100 pages, Issue 6 is the largest edition yet, and covers hardware and ancillaries for PVCu, composite, aluminium and timber residential doors, ‘Lifestyle’ patio doors and windows.

Ben Shephard, marketing assistant at VBH says, “It’s been a while since we published a greenteQ catalogue, and we are very glad

to get Issue 6 out there, as the greenteQ brand is now so popular across all sectors.

“There are many changes from Issue 5 so I would urge everyone involved in buying hardware to take a look, as there will be something in there for you. For example, many people are unaware that we offer a selection of adhesives, cleaners and lubricants from stock, so customers can buy their construction chemicals with their hardware.”

Highlights of the new additions to the catalogue include the iQ range of window and door locks that work with Kubu to link windows and doors to a smart

home network, the Orion TS007 3 star cylinder, Sigma Velocity door hinge and Clearslide sliding door gear. There are also the Q-Smart electronic fingerprint door handle, new additions to the Clearspan range of bi-fold door gear and many other new products besides.

Ben adds “Cataloguing the greenteQ range is an ongoing project, as our greenteQ New Product Team is constantly adding new products to the range. This is great for our customers, of course, as they always have the latest in ‘hardware tech’ available to them, but we in the VBH Marketing Team certainly feel the pain of the guys painting the Forth Rail Bridge!”

The UK Government is setting out its expectations on not only reducing CO2 emissions, but improving energy efficiency in every aspect of our lives. So, whether it’s electric cars, solar PV and battery storage, higher levels of insulation, or electricals having to perform better, everything is under scrutiny. In the journey towards greater energy security, the Net Zero Strategy is aiming to reduce household heating bills by up to 20% and our dependency on foreign gas. It’s thought that the introduction of eco measures can help deliver more planetfriendly homes.

It’s a welcome change for homeowners, as half of them are looking to adapt their homes to make them more energy efficient, according to the Rated People Home Improvement Trend Report 2023. For the first time in many years, homeowners are choosing to replace windows to reduce heating bills. Because of this, triple glazing is one of the main elements they are looking

to install in their home. The demand for triple glazing surged by 125% in 2022, and 15% of homeowners are now looking to install it in 2023 – making it one of the 20 top home improvement musts set to dominate this year and beyond. It's a welcome opportunity for forward thinking installation companies. SILKA is taking the lead with its dedication to top energy performance and design, our products – including Aluminium Windows; Bifold, Lift & Slide and Entrance Doors; and Rooflights - supply a revolutionary design and technology that delivers top thermal efficiency. But I think we all agree that no one wants to compromise on the look of their home.

HOW IS SILKA DELIVERING ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY?

For many years, triple glazing has been a standard offering at New World Developments – the company behind SILKA. Having both the frame and glass manufactured at the same site provides a smooth and simple delivery of even the largest units, reinforcing our confidence

in delivering both faultless products and logistics.

Every innovation from SILKA also benefits from our ground-breaking Thermafill™ thermal barrier system. The highly insulated Thermafill™ technology is a clever method of maximising the insulating performance of the frame and glass. With such a revolutionary combination, it’s no surprise that Thermafill™ and triple glazing delivers ultra-low U-values, making SILKA products a top performing window, door and rooflight suite.

SILKA Aluminium Windows, which come in both 72mm and slimline design, achieve U-values as low as 0.8 W/m²K, our Lift & Slide Doors deliver U-values as low as 1.26 W/m²K, while the Bifold Doors offer U-values down to 0.7 W/m²K.

SILKA: THE COMPLETE PACKAGE

As well as ticking all the boxes when it comes to energy performance, SILKA products are beautiful in their design. The exclusive SILKtouch sputter coat technology gives our products a smooth as ‘SILKA’ feel to touch, while its robust finish helps resist finger marks and avoid unwanted smears.

Manufactured in aluminium, SILKA window and door products offer an on-trend modern aesthetic, suiting a range of property designs. Created by the team at New World Developments using their design and technical know-howthe range includes wide-span glazing, entrance doors, windows and rooflights. This means that no matter the project a customer is looking to undertakewhether it’s a refurbishment, renovation, extension, or new build – SILKA can deliver it all.

The complete SILKA range encompasses Windows; Entrance, Bifold and Lift & Slide Doors; and Rooflights which are available now: www.silkawindows.com.

SUSTAINABILITY IS TRENDY!

Stuart Stockley, MD of

VEKA

Recycling, says new research confirms homeowners expect proof that suppliers are truly green and that sustainability is more on trend than ever. But choosing the right partner is essential.

According to market research recently published by NeilsenIQ, the world’s leading consumer intelligence company, a key sustainability trend is that: “Companies and consumers will make a major shift past purpose statements and will be held accountable to show real proof of traction towards true and meaningful change. In fact, in the next year we will see the onus will shift for companies to prove sustainability status rather than regulatory bodies to monitor compliance.”

The report by NeilsenIQ, concludes that 2023 will be a ‘pivotal year for sustainability’ and goes on to say: ‘After a year of extreme weather events that have challenged crop yields, supply chains and the cost of goods around the world, 2023 has been pegged as a pivotal year for sustainable action.

‘This past year, people around the world felt the economic and social cost of sustainable inaction. Played against an already volatile economic landscape and a challenged energy market, a bevy of broken solutions brought focused attention to issues such as environmentally depleting supply chain practices and energy-dependent routes to market. 2022 was a tipping point for many, inspiring companies to invest and get serious about creating a sustainable renewable future.

‘In the year ahead, brand accountability, legislation and governance, and a new level of seriousness around sustainability across companies and consumers will set the stage for a year of positive, purposeful, and proofdriven change.’

I hope you will forgive me for being opportunistic, but all of this points towards the additional benefits for sales that are available to the window and wider building products industry. We know from experience that replacement windows and doors are one of the most desirable home improvements to homeowners; but the tangible benefits brought by improvements in the energy efficiency of modern windows and doors, now give such products even greater justification when capital expenditure is being considered. As does demonstrable sustainability.

The case for replacing windows and doors with high performance versions, is made even clearer when one considers that old PVC-U frames are eminently recyclable, a fact that adds further weight towards a homeowner’s decision to replace their old frames. Old frames may be recycled, within days, into brand new products – potentially new window frames – as well as most new PVC-U frames containing material from recycled frames, facts that can close sales when discussions about price and performance has been exhausted.

My company VEKA Recycling Ltd, has been recycling PVC-U virgin offcuts and old PVC-U frames since 1993 so you might say that we were ahead of the game. Back then it was due to a belief of the founder of VEKA Group, Heinrich Laumann, that PVC-U was not merely a useful and versatile plastic but one that was a valuable commodity, far too valuable in fact to simply be thrown away. Sustainability is a concept that has risen relatively recently but it serves to emphasise the conviction by our founder of the value of this extraordinary material.

The recycling of both virgin and removed PVC-U frames is now very well proven and our Wellingborough plant, completed two years ago, is not only state-of-the-art in terms of the quality of the finished product, it is also here, in the heart of England, which further reduces the carbon footprint of the PVC-U materials’ circular journey to becoming a brand new window frame, or other new extrusion.

Not only is recycling good for the environment, in terms of PVC-U windows, it is good for sales. Installers should make sure that they partner with a recycler that can demonstrate an audited trail all the way back to the point of recycling. And, confident in this knowledge, they should then ensure their customers understand the significance of that arrangement.

And that their old windows will become new products within weeks of being removed from their homes, something that can be a major influence towards them choosing one installer over another. Using a trusted brand such as VEKA Recycling, will also help to cement that deal.

But don’t just take my word for it; check the reesearch!

HEPWORTH FRAMEWORK MANUFACTURES A RANGE OF ALUMINIUM PRODUCTS AT THEIR NEW BRIGHOUSE FACILITY

The date had been in the diary for some time and Glass News’ Editor, Chris Champion, set off for to visit Hepworth Framework and see their extended manufacturing facility and the new showroom at their Brighouse, West Yorkshire, base. What he wasn’t prepared for was to be greeted by John Collins and his family!

Prepping for a visit to any business inevitably involves scoping out the website and checking through any press releases that have crossed your desk. In this case the research was somewhat lacking such that Hepworth’s pedigree came as a surprise. This family-based company has been around for a long time and has extensive

experience in the manufacture of aluminium doors and windows and is part of the JCI Ltd empire that includes timber products, retailer Vufold, and linked to composite doors with DoorCo. Over £1 million has been invested in this purposebuilt plant that caters for both the domestic

and commercial sectors and includes new machinery, a product showroom and an increase in manufacturing staff as well as manufacturing space.

Aluminium is Hepworth Frameworks’ speciality and their work isn’t restricted to standard shapes. There was evidence of

many curved frames as well as frames which involved curved glass, too. While their main customer focus is on installers and builders their abilities attract architects and specifiers who are looking for specific design expertise. As the MD, Richard Steckles said “With the right partner, you can reap far higher rewards with better sales conversions and profit margins too. We are here to help.”

As aluminium is more challenging to work with than PVCu a knowledgeable and reliable supplier is essential and talking to the people on the shopfloor as John Collins

gave a guided tour, it was obvious that there was expertise aplenty! What was also interesting was how the bi-folds and patio systems were all glazed and fitted into rigs to prove fit and reliability prior to shipping. This is all filmed and salted away in case there are issues when fitting on site and Hepworth Framework can demonstrate that a specific product was in full working order before shipping.

Hepworth’s has been a long standing customer of Senior Architectural Systems’ products and this grew from the demand for commercial applications. Seniors is also used for domestic installations but Hepworth has added the Cortizo range to their offering to give them a range of products and price points, which is important as aluminium gains traction in the domestic residential market.

Hepworth’s showroom also contains examples of PVCu and composite door products they offer as a full service supplier.

This Open Day was attended by the Mayor of Calderdale, Councillor Angie Gallagher, who spoke of the importance of businesses such as Hepworth Framework who

provided employment and an important service to the immediate area and beyond. She cut the ribbon declaring the new facility open and presented a cheque to the Brighouse Central Foodbank that Hepworth has chosen as their local charity in recognition and support for the important work they do in the local area.

Managing Director Richard Steckles summed up what the company was all

about and why they have invested in this facility: “At Hepworth, our business is selling bi-fold and patio doors and windows to our trader partners, installers and builders, for them to install into extensions, renovations and new-builds. However, as consumers continue to build home offices and other multi-functional living spaces in 2023, aluminium is totally on-trend and represents an opportunity for growth.

Aluminium delivers more natural light through the larger glazing areas with its stronger but slimmer sightlines, creating light, bright spaces that consumers want. Not only does aluminium offer design flexibility, it is also sustainable and durable.

“This is great news for anyone making, selling and installing aluminium windows and doors but to gain the most benefit, getting the supply right is critical. And for that, you need to work with a reliable, professional, expert aluminium partner like Hepworth Framework. We have invested to provide exceptional products and service for our customers and our next investment is to open a trade counter.”

STANDING OUT FROM THE CROWD

Freefoam’s Commercial Director, Colin St John, answers key questions about the home improvement market and highlights why customers come first for Freefoam.

IN THESE TIMES OF ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY, WHAT IS THE HOME IMPROVEMENT MARKET LOOKING LIKE FOR CUSTOMERS?

I don’t want to speak too soon, but the UK’s economy has improved significantly from the dark days at the end of last year!

Over 20 years the home improvement market has polarised into the ‘Haves’ and the ‘Have Nots’. The Haves, generally older homeowners without mortgages whose homes have risen greatly in value, account for the bulk of UK savings and are largely unaffected by inflation. They invest to improve, enhance and add value to their homes, so the premium sector is thriving and a bigger part of the market. Some Have Nots may earn more, but their outgoings are higher, and their budgets have been severely squeezed in the cost-of-living crisis.

Homeowners want choice in design, colour and style. And they expect high-quality, long-lasting, easy to maintain products that are energy efficient and sustainable.

WHAT MAKES FREEFOAM DIFFERENT IN THE WAY IT WORKS WITH ITS CUSTOMERS?

Freefoam is an independent roofline and cladding manufacturer that sells only through its stockists and merchants. We don’t have our own outlets and trade counters, so we don’t compete with our customers.

We supply a nationwide network of independent stockists and merchants and work closely with the supply chain to help them build their businesses and provide ‘local’ top-quality service to their customers and end users.

WHY DOES FREEFOAM WORK SO HARD TO HELP ITS CUSTOMERS WIN BUSINESS?

Success for Freefoam is seeing our customers prosper. When they are successful, we are successful – their growth is our growth. We enjoy long-standing, trusting relationships with our customers and work closely with them to help them flourish.

For example, we’ve had a strong relationship with the UK’s largest independent builders’ merchants, Huws Gray, which has grown significantly over the past five years.

Kris Jones, Category Manager for Flat Roofing, Building Products and External Cladding at Huws Gray, couldn’t say it better: “Freefoam has been really supportive of our expansion, and it’s been really important to have a partner we have grown with.”

HOW DOES FREEFOAM SUPPORT SUPPLIERS AND MERCHANTS?

Freefoam manufactures an extensive range of high-quality innovative PVC-UE and PVC-U products, which includes roofline and fascia, guttering, and one of the most extensive and coherent cladding ranges on the market.

We have an industry-leading colour range using our unique, patented Colormax® technology, which, along with technical expertise, underpins our extended guarantees – the longest in the industryfor colour and white products.

Customers say our marketing support is unrivalled. Our Area Sales Managers have in-depth knowledge and visit customers regularly, while technical advisors are at the end of a phone for more specific advice and product information. We offer strong marketing support, providing a wide range of materials to help businesses develop and grow.

Customers can add further value to their businesses by becoming Freefoam Registered Stockists through our dedicated website, and can nominate their customers to become Freefoam Registered Installers.

HOW DOES FREEFOAM SUPPORT INSTALLERS?

The Freefoam Registered Installer Scheme has been going for 20 years and we have around 1,200 registered installers nationally. The scheme helps installers sell and grow their businesses and customer base. Alongside marketing, technical and customer support, we generate qualified homeowner leads for our installers through the MyFascia and MyCladding websites, enabling them to offer extended guarantees to homeowners on roofline and cladding. It’s a powerful selling point. Only applicable when used, fitted and registered by Freefoam Registered Installers, our pre-eminent guarantees include a 50-year guarantee on white roofline products. Finally, installers using our new online Visualiser and Calculator design and sales tools can easily demonstrate to homeowners what Freefoam’s cladding will look like on their homes and how much product will be required.

TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE CLADDING PRODUCTS THAT ARE AVAILABLE TO STOCKISTS, INSTALLERS, AND HOMEOWNERS.

Demand for cladding has boomed in the last two years. According to the Rated People Home Improvement Trends Report 2023, interest in cladding increased by a massive 743% over the past year.

Freefoam is a leader and innovator in the PVC cladding market with premium products in a wide range of colour options. The Fortex® range is available in two styles,

Weatherboard and Double Shiplap, in 10 different colours. We also have the Single Shiplap range and the premium X-Wood cladding range.

Excitingly, we have just extended Fortex® with a new cladding style, Shadow Gap, and a new colour, Anthracite Grey, available across the full Fortex® range.

WHAT IS FREEFOAM DOING TO HELP STOCKISTS AND INSTALLERS GROW FAST IN THE CLADDING MARKET?

Cladding has the power to transform the look of a home and offers a real opportunity for stockists and installers to tap into a rapidly growing market.

Freefoam’s cladding is an easy-to-install, low-maintenance solution, with longlasting performance and additional energy efficiency when installed with insulation. We offer customers the most comprehensive range of PVC cladding by far, with ranges to suit all properties and projects.

Customers who have already entered the cladding market are taking advantage of our pioneering guarantees, homeowner leads for installers, and our new Calculator and Visualiser design tools. Freefoam’s cladding has instant kerb appeal, transforming a property into a home as individual as each and every homeowner.

TRIPLE OR BUST?

We are already undergoing a period of investment, which will allow us to manufacture and distribute different spacer widths in greater quantities, alongside other components such as corner keys and desiccant.

LANCASHIRE TRADE FRAMES CELEBRATE 20 YEARS IN BUSINESS

As an industry, we have talked ourselves into believing that we don’t need triple glazing to comply with Building Regulations, and that ‘clever doubles’ are more than sufficient.

In fact, we have talked ourselves out of pursuing volume triple glazing production because triple glazed units would be too heavy, they would put too much pressure on the hardware, they would cost too much to transport, or they would need specialist lifting equipment on site.

But that’s set to change.

By now, you would have heard about the Future Homes Standard (FHS), which is due in 2025. We are still waiting for the exact figures, but we expect that windows and doors with a glazed area of more than 60% going into newbuild homes will need U-values of 0.9W/m2K or lower.

We’ve known that these performance requirements were on the cards for some time. So, it really shouldn’t come as a surprise that the different elements that make up a window will have to perform better, including the sealed unit. And because the best performing double glazed units can’t achieve anything lower than 1.0W/m2K, then an increase in demand for triple glazing is almost certain. This shouldn’t be a cause for concern. The only thing that stands in the way of widespread triple glazing is lack of preparation and investment.

Our most popular width of Thermobar is 20mm for a standard double glazed unit. We are installing new lines and storage facilities to manufacture and distribute Thermobar in 12mm, 14mm and 16mm widths in preparation for the increase in demand for triple glazing. Thermobar is already the glazing industry’s most popular warm edge spacer bar, which is unlikely to change because it is PassivHaus-approved thanks to it ultra-low thermal values.

We’ve also invested in our Thermoflex flexible spacer bar line, buying in a third twin-strand extruder, which can produce all thicknesses including 4.8mm, 6.3mm and 7.3mm, and air spaces up to 28mm in twin strand. And because it is quicker than our existing equipment, it can produce more than double the quantity of product per shift on certain product types.

And we mustn’t forget the other products required for the manufacture of sealed units, including corner keys, desiccant, primary and secondary sealant, and cloth tape. All components are tested at our laboratory before distribution, guaranteeing that they all work together effectively for a long-lasting sealed unit.

There are still two years before the new Future Homes Standard comes into force, but we need to prepare for the changes now, including partnering with the most prepared suppliers. And those companies that prepare now will be the ones ready to take on the extra work when the new legislation comes into force.

For more information, please visit www.thermosealgroup.com, or call 0121 331 3955.

Epwin Window Systems’ fabricator Lancashire Trade Frames is celebrating 20 years in business and 20 years as a Spectus fabricator too. Mark Rowland, Managing Director at Lancashire Trade Frames, said: “In a sector that’s faced many challenges over the last two decades, it’s a remarkable achievement to have achieved this company milestone.”

The business has seen many changes over its 20year tenure, but its choice of systems partner has remained constant. Mark said: “We have worked with Spectus from the start as the quality of the system and the strength of our relationship has allowed us to support our growing customer base.”

Lancashire Trade Frames manufactures the Spectus ovolo and sculptured 70mm PVC-U system, a combination that means it can deliver what its customers need across all market sectors.

As a family-run business, Lancashire Trade Frames prides itself on delivering consistent high-quality products and customer support. It also places a strong emphasis on loyalty throughout its operation. Mark said: “Loyalty is a thread that runs through our entire business. This also extends to the wider family of our staff, community, customers and suppliers.”

To mark the anniversary, Lancashire Trade Frames held a company open day for key suppliers and Paul Adlington, Business Development Manager at Epwin Window Systems, presented a commemorative plaque. Paul commented: “We have worked with Mark and his team throughout their 20year history and send our congratulations in recognition of this business milestone.”

While wanting to reminisce about the company’s journey so far, Mark was keen to talk about where the business is heading. He concluded: “After twenty years, our determination to be the fabricator of choice shines brighter than ever. The future is looking bright.”

A BETTER WAY TO BUILD FROM LEKA FROM AMBITIONS TO ACTION: MAKING THE EU GREEN DEAL HAPPEN

VinylPlus® launched its Progress Report 2023 at the 11th VinylPlus Sustainability Forum (VSF2023). Under the theme ‘Making the EU Green Deal Happen’, more than 160 delegates from 21 countries gathered in Florence, Italy, to debate sustainable solutions towards carbon neutrality, circularity in the building and construction sector, developments in green procurement and sustainable product certifications.

Two years after the launch of its VinylPlus 2030 Commitment, the European PVC industry convened in Florence, Italy, in May 2023. Stakeholders debated progress in sustainability and the circular economy and how to put in place concrete actions to make the EU Green Deal happen.

Opening the VSF2023, Karl-Martin Schellerer, VinylPlus Chairman, highlighted the main progress and achievements of the European PVC industry in 2022, which are summarised in the VinylPlus Progress Report 2023.

Major milestones towards the 2030 sustainability commitment

In terms of circularity, 813,266 tonnes of PVC waste were recycled within the VinylPlus framework in 2022, representing around 27% of the total PVC waste generated during the year in the EU-27, Norway, Switzerland and the UK. Since 2000, 8.1 million tonnes of PVC have been recycled and reused in new products, preventing the release of 16.2 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. Heavy investments have been made in research and development projects aimed at removing legacy additives from waste and increasing chemical recycling of PVC waste that cannot be mechanically recycled in an eco-efficient manner.

As we tackle legacy additives, the industry is also looking to future-proof additives used today: a key tool to achieve this is the Additive Sustainability Footprint® methodology, which enables companies to proactively assess and promote the sustainable production and use of PVC

additives throughout the entire product lifecycles. The methodology was shared with European PVC converters and presented at several events in Europe and abroad. VinylPlus’ vision is to broaden the use of the Additive Sustainability Footprint®.

Throughout 2022, VinylPlus also launched a series of initiatives aimed at supporting member companies’ efforts in reducing water and energy consumption, increasing the use of renewable energy and raw material, and minimising any accidental spillage of PVC into water and the environment.

The VinylPlus® Product Label, the sustainability certification for PVC products for the Building and Construction sector, was updated and included in the Italian GPP CAM (minimum environmental criteria). The Label’s criteria are currently under assessment by the Swiss organisation Ecobau. In addition, the first five companies have obtained the VinylPlus® Supplier Certificates, the sustainability certifications for additives suppliers and compounders. Sessions focused on the upcoming European policy initiatives on plastics and PVC, the regulatory challenges of the EU legislative framework and accelerating circularity in building and construction. Speakers analysed the path towards sustainable development through certified and traceable products and the future of Green Public Procurement (GPP) in Europe. The contribution to more sustainable products for GPP provided by the VinylPlus® Product Label for PVC converters and the VinylPlus® Supplier Certificates for PVC additives suppliers and compounders is increasingly recognised by stakeholders. An award ceremony recognised Akdeniz Chemson, Baerlocher, IKA, Polymer-Chemie, Reagens, Salamander and Sattler that were certified in 2022.

The popular Leka Xi modular conservatory system offers a wealth of benefits over a traditional home extension or brick-built conservatory which is why it’s fast become the go-to system across the domestic market. Rhys Hoddinott, Managing Director of Leka Systems, says: “The Leka Xi is a tried-and-tested product that gives homeowners a larger internal footprint as well as some of the lowest U values in the market. Plus, it’s fast to fit, so homeowners get a rapid transformation and installers get a faster order-to-invoice time, boosting cashflow. When compared to the traditional alternatives, it’s an obviously better choice.”

Traditional brick- or block-built conservatories need to have thicker walls to comply with U value requirements. This can reduce the size of the internal footprint, which translates to a smaller living space. The Leka Xi uses highly thermally efficient boards, which are slimmer by design. As a result, the Leka Xi delivers a smaller internal footprint and impressive U values that are very appealing to homeowners.  The innovative, modular construction of the Leka Xi dramatically cuts the installation time too. A traditional brick- or block-built conservatory can take weeks. In contrast,

a conservatory built using the Leka Xi system and a Leka roof can be installed in days. And because it’s typically installed on concrete pads with the ability to utilise Ground Screws where appropriate, it’s much less messy and disruptive than traditional foundations. Rhys says: “It’s just a better way to build conservatories, extensions and freestanding garden rooms.”

As well as a value-added product for their portfolio, Leka fabricators and installers also benefit from a comprehensive training programme to understand the product and the wider marketplace. Combined with proactive sales, value-added marketing support and an exclusive Checkatrade membership discount, it all adds up to a compelling offering. Rhys commented: “We place a heavy emphasis on marketing and our understanding of homeowner demographics sets us apart. We’ve taken the time to understand buying motives, the trigger points in the sales process and the marketing channels that really work. We run a variety of homeowner campaigns to ensure brand awareness and develop a pipeline of new business enquiries for customers.”

The Leka Xi is the perfect example of the innovation for which Leka Systems is known. And just like other Leka products including the Leka Warm Roof and the Leka Orangery Roof, homeowners ask for it by name. Rhys concludes: “There has never been a better time to add value to your business by working with Leka. Our products offer clear competitive advantages and our training programmes and ongoing marketing channels support customers at every level. “VinylPlus is fully committed to supporting a rigorous, comprehensive, and sciencebased investigation process – commented Brigitte Dero, Managing Director of VinylPlus – to ensure the European PVC value chain a fair transition to a sustainable

future. Our Forum 2023 shows that the European PVC industry can work jointly with policymakers and industry partners to address sustainability challenges. The recent publication of the REACH restriction on lead in PVC, for example, is the result of fruitful discussions between regulators, industry, and other stakeholders and builds upon the industry’s efforts to reduce the use of hazardous substances in PVC products and further enhance the circularity of the PVC industry. This regulatory measure will restrict the import of lead-containing PVC products from third countries where lead is still used as a stabiliser and will enable the PVC industry to meet its ambitious recycling targets in a way that is safe for human health and the environment.”

Closing the Forum, Karl-Martin Schellerer remarked: “I am very proud to announce that the PVC industry is on track to deliver the first targets of VinylPlus 2030. We are continuously working to improve our sustainability performance.

COMBINING

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND FIRE SAFETY: THE NEW COLLABORATION BETWEEN PYROGUARD AND TECHNOFORM

Recognising the increased attention on energy efficiency and sustainability, Pyroguard (part of the Technical Fire Safety Group) and Technoform UK (the profile manufacturer) have successfully collaborated on a test programme and launched a new fire rated solution: the use of high-performance warm edge spacers with Pyroguard fire safety glass.

Available for use in a range of Pyroguard’s fire-rated Insulated Glazed Units (IGUs), this development now enables architects, contractors, façade engineers and fabricators to achieve greater thermal properties and improved unit performance under test conditions.

Spacers - installed as separators between the glass panes - that are certified for use in fire rated IGUs are traditionally manufactured from steel or aluminium, due to the material’s durability in the event of a fire. However, from an energy efficiency point of view, the conductivity of metal can adversely affect the thermal performance of a glazing system.

Working in partnership - and following several full-scale fire tests at Warringtonfire (UK) and Efectis (FR) - Technoform and Pyroguard have developed and qualified this new solution, which complies with BS EN 1364. The warm edge spacers are suitable for use in conjunction with Pyroguard’s fire rated IGUs and are included as standard with many of Pyroguard’s (IGU) constructions. Unlike other warm edge spacer technologies, the Technoform SP14 spacer has a hybrid construction of precision engineered polypropylene and steel. The SP14 delivers improved thermal properties, while the inclusion of steel coextruded into the spacer structure offers

structural stability and durability in fire situations.

Speaking about the collaboration, Andy Lake, Sales Director UK & IRE at Pyroguard said: “Sustainability and energy efficiency is becoming an increasingly critical factor for architects and specifiers. Across the glazing industry, we are seeing warm edge spacers being specified with increasing frequency, helping to reduce the thermal bridging of the system. Our partnership with Technoform and our extensive testing programme has enabled us to now bring this improved thermal performance to the fire safety glass sector, combining safety with sustainability.

“We’re very proud to be the first fire safety glass manufacturer to offer this performance upgrade as standard in the market.”

Richard John, Product & Market Manager at Technoform, added: “Specifiers and building owners are constantly looking to improve thermal performance and reduce carbon footprints. Added to this, limited combustibility design is vitally important. Our partnership with Pyroguard now enables us to deliver performance on all these fronts.”

CE and UKCA approved, the new warm edge spacers are compatible with many of Pyroguard’s products. Available in widths from 12 – 22 mm, the spacers are also manufactured in various colours, including black, which is ideal for blending seamlessly with the sealants used in typical IGU constructions.

One of the best qualities of a steel window or door is its longevity and this is where refurbishment and servicing are vitally important; this is where SWA members can help. Options range from a very basic ease and adjusting, where the windows and doors remain in-situ and are serviced, to a full in-situ overhaul involving significant paint removal and redecoration, where possible.

In a complete refurbishment, all the windows and doors are removed and taken to a factory environment for shot blasting, potentially galvanising, powder coating and servicing; then comes the reinstallation and reglazing. There is also the possibility, especially in heritage situations, of maintaining the original aesthetic of the original window by hand painting and reglazing.

The refurbishment has improved centuries, and, today, clients can expect an upgrade in usability and security as well as both thermal and acoustic performance through glazing and sealant enhancements. In addition, the windows are significantly more aesthetically-pleasing.

For owners of buildings or houses within listed or conservation areas, or those

On-site overhaul is as above but includes removal of visible surface paint; treatment of the visible steel substrate; tightening or replacement of coupled frame intersections and perimeter fixings; replacement of damaged weather seals; potential for upgrading of glass specifications; potential to modernise or refurbish existing ironmongery to include enhanced security; re-introduction of perimeter and window mastic seals; replacement of glazing beads, mastic and putty; and redecoration of painted surfaces.

Full off-site overhaul includes removal of existing frames, and possible temporary protection of apertures, shot blast to bare metal to remove all existing paint and priming material; fully recorded survey of necessary repairs and replacement section, hinges and couplings; full pre-treatment primer and re-painting of the steel sections to required specification; re-installation of frames to apertures, re-glazing with the possibility of thermal / acoustic upgrades; refurbishment and replacement of existing specialist glazing; application of new mastic and primary weather seals; and re-instatement of refurbished or new ironmonger.

STELLAR ALUMINIUM SELECTED FOR CAMBRIDGESHIRE LIBRARY

41 Stellar Flush Casement Windows by Epwin Window Systems have been manufactured and installed in St Neots Library in Cambridgeshire as part of a renovation project to improve the building’s energy efficiency and aesthetic appeal.

The contract was awarded to experienced Stellar manufacturer Prestige Aluminium. Gavin Taylor, Managing Director, explains: “The original timber vertical sliding windows had come to the end of their purposeful life, something that was affecting the visual appearance and the building’s energy efficiency. New windows were needed to upgrade the thermal efficiency and restore the building’s original appearance.”

The Stellar Flush Casement Windows provided the perfect solution to both problems. The aluminium windows are extremely energy efficient by design and meet the requirements of Part L of Building Regulations with standard double-glazed units, whilst offering a high-level of security. They also deliver up to 12% more glass area than a comparable window, maximising natural light and further

reducing artificial lighting resource, something that is increasingly important in an age of high energy bills.

At the same time, Stellar windows have outstanding aesthetics that enhance every building. For this project, the 41 Flush Casement Windows were manufactured in RAL 8016M, Chocolate Brown to retain the building’s original appearance.

Several features of the project demonstrate the versatility and flexibility of Stellar. All non-opening windows were constructed using dummy sashes to retain a flush appearance across the building’s envelope. Trickle vents were incorporated into window mullions because the building’s plaster line meant they could not be fitted into the frame. For safety, all windows were fitted with 100mm restrictors. The project ran to schedule due to the experience and meticulous planning of the Prestige Aluminium team and the quick-fitting properties of Stellar. Gavin concluded: “This high-profile public building demonstrates Stellar Aluminium’s credentials and is another example of how it’s

opening up opportunities across the commercial sector. The windows have provided a sleek aesthetic to the building’s architecture and provided a warm and inviting atmosphere for the library’s customers. We were delighted to be involved.”

EPWIN’S VERTICAL SLIDERS UPGRADE MERSEYSIDE HOMES

67 Vertical Sliding sash windows by Epwin Window Systems have been installed as part of a refurbishment programme of several Merseyside properties owned by Northwest Housing Services, a member of the Lark Lane Housing Cooperative. The properties, which fall within a conservation area, needed to be sympathetically upgraded to improve their aesthetics and provide more thermally efficient and sound-insulated windows for the occupants.

The project was awarded to experienced installer Countrywide UPVC of Ormskirk, Lancashire, who has over 20 years of experience in commercial installations. The team at Countrywide worked closely with all parties to plan an efficient installation programme which was completed over a six-month period.

The authentic heritage appearance of the Vertical Sliders met all the aesthetic considerations required on such a sensitive project and delivered the exacting standards needed to meet the thermal efficiency requirements.

The Epwin Window Systems Vertical Sliding windows were manufactured in white with run-through sash horns and chrome hardware for traditional styling.

The popular Epwin Window Systems Vertical Slider is a design-classic that sympathetically captures many of the key features of the traditional window design combined with all the benefits of a modern-day window. This includes superb energy efficiency and smooth operating balance mechanisms that ensure ease of use for occupants.

With 67 Vertical Sliding windows needing to be installed across the various properties, the installation programme needed to be meticulously planned to minimise disruption of the occupants.

The finished result has transformed the properties and improved the homes’ thermal efficiency and noticeably reduced noise penetration. Paul Campbell, Director at Countrywide UPVC, said: “We were delighted to be invited to work on this refurbishment project. It’s a great example of how our team can deliver energy efficient and sympathetic

window solutions for exacting refurbishment projects. We are looking forward to working with Lark Lane Housing Cooperative in the future.”

London based metal window specialist, ASWS, has carried out the painstaking repair and restoration of multiple window types for the project team which undertook the redevelopment of the former Daily Mail headquarters at Temple in the City of London.

The work on the Grade II Listed, The Northcliffe, which stands in the Whitefriars Conservation Area, was carried out by ISG Ltd with John Robertson Architects leading the design team.  ASWS was awarded its sub-contract based on both the architect and ISG’s experience of working with the specialist in the past - giving them confidence in the high-quality finish which the firm strives to achieve through all its interventions.

At the outset ASWS was initially engaged to carry out a full condition survey across the complex elevations, as well as internal doors and screens.  This covered all of the steel, timber, aluminium and curtain walling, with the report being used as a key part of the pricing/tender document for the project.

The Operations Director for ASWS, Kris Bennell reflected on the project saying, “For the steel windows, the work included the full servicing and detailed cleaning of all the original copper light glazing, along with the redecoration and overhaul of all the ironmongery.”

Andy Thomas, Associate at JRA added, “The mix of fenestration throughout The Northcliffe is really very interesting, and it was a key early design decision that the existing Grade II listed copperlight windows were expressed as a prominent feature within the internal office space. Given the listed status of the building, retention of these historic elements was also a key consideration throughout the planning process”.

Andy continues, “The works included cleaning and restoring all of the copper lights in the listed façade and ISG proposed ASWS as the preferred specialist for this, along with other elements of the window restoration work. ASWS executed a very competent job, including ensuring all of the sequencing was managed correctly.”

The expertise of ASWS was material in helping JRA and ISG achieve their goals of repurposing or recycling as much of the original building as possible, with The Northcliffe is on track to achieve a BREEAM Outstanding rating, putting it in the top 1% of the UK’s commercial refurbishment schemes.

“In the case of the timber windows all of the sashes were removed back to our workshop for a comprehensive overhaul, which included the routing in of new draught strips, re-glazing and overhaul of the opening lights.  The remainder of the windows on site were serviced, prepped and redecorated, including the extensive mastic work to the perimeters and glazing fronts.”

ASWS is a member of the Steel Window Association and is experienced in working with both planning authorities and heritage bodies to ensure all conservation requirements can be met on contracts.  ASWS can also carry out the forensic dismantling, cataloguing and secure storage of metal, timber and aluminium windows while major alterations are in progress, prior to restoration and reinstatement. As well as full replacement project we also specialise in full window and façade surveys.

IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU...

Where were you born and live currently?

I was born in Blackpool and lived there till I was 22. Staying within the Fylde area, I then lived on the sunny coast of Lytham St. Annes before moving abroad to Finland to pursue my career as a professional American Football player. Two years ago, I moved to the countryside of Preston with my wife, my 4 year old son and my 2 Husky dogs.

Your education and the subject or activity in which you excelled?

As a young child, I had a passion for the stage and I excelled in dance and drama. I’d always had a particular interest in business and economics, so it felt natural for me that when I finished school, to further my education studying Business Development. I have also studied Strength and Conditioning within contact sports.

Your favourite sports or interests?

I love American Football and had a great time playing in Finland for the Seinajoki Crocodiles in my 20’s. I now play for the Manchester Titans, the current national champions in the UK. Golf also takes up a lot of my time – usually early in the mornings!

Your biggest regret in life?

Having put some thought into it, I genuinely don’t have any regrets. I may have made decisions at points in my life that might not have quite turned out the way I’d have liked, but ultimately, they’ve led me to this point of my life now where I’m extremely happy, both personally and professionally.

The temptation you can’t resist...?

Coffee! I only started drinking it about 5 years ago, but I’ve definitely made up for lost time. I’d been putting off buying a coffee machine for home, but my wife bought me one for Christmas and I am making full use of it – probably a little too much, really!

Someone or something that inspires you?

I am inspired by the process of learning. I have an obsession for learning about things that mean something to me, so that I can talk about them with both passion and knowledge. Faisal Hussain, the CEO of DGCOS, is a huge inspiration in my life both personally and professionally. He has been a great mentor to be over the last 18 months and has really transformed my outlook, not just on business but also the culture of the organisation. The culture that he has instilled has really helped developed me to be a better person, professionally and personally, and he has supported my progression to the senior staff member that I am now.

YOUR CAREER...

When and how you joined the industry?

I joined DGCOS and subsequently the home improvements industry back in 2018 as a Sales Executive. A friend of a friend, Mike McGougan, was advertising for a sales role and a few of our mutual friends connected us up. As well as colleagues, Mike and I are now great friends – he was even best man at my wedding!

The job you do?

I’m the Head of Business within the 3 schemes that we operate in covering Glazing, Renewables and General Home Improvement. I’m responsible for the commercial side of our organisation and generating revenue for the business. I’ve been successful in generating multiple partnerships with key stakeholders such as Competent Person Schemes, Certification Bodies, large manufacturers and suppliers. In the close to 5 years I’ve been here, I’ve been responsible for tripling the number of members we have across the schemes and providing ongoing value to those installers.

Your greatest achievement?

In my personal life, I would say signing my professional contract in American Football

in Europe would have to be number one. Being paid to play the sport you love and to live that sports athlete life was really a dream come true and something I’d worked so hard for. Professionally, I think being promoted to my current role means so much to me. Knowing I’d gained the trust and respect of not only Faisal, but also company directors and pioneers of consumer protection, Tony Pickup and Richard Christie, means a lot. They built DGCOS and the other schemes from a pipe dream and having them put me in the driver’s seat to push the revenue is something I couldn’t thank them enough for.

What is a mistake you’d like to correct?

I had the opportunity to go and sign a professional contract the year before I actually did in 2016/17. I had the best experience I could have imagined whilst I was away in Finland and looking back, I definitely should have done it when I was first made the offer.

AND YOUR FUTURE...

What would you like to do if you weren’t in this industry?

It’s very hard for me to envisage myself out of a business-type role; however, if that was the case, I’d love to open up a Husky sanctuary or have a large premises that I could train Huskies to pull sleds.

A PARTICULAR AMBITION?

My goal from day one within the Schemes was to have them ring out as a household name.

It’s hugely important to me that the consumer protection that we provide is recognised not only to consumers looking to buy home improvement products, but also for installers and companies to associate us with pushing standards and quality within the sector in which they operate.

The way you want to be remembered?

Personally, I’d like to be remembered by friends and family as someone who’d make the room warmer when I was there. Someone who could always bring a smile to people’s faces and breed positivity to a point it would have changed their lives.

Professionally, I’d always like to be known as someone that tradesmen and company directors could relate to.

There is nothing more satisfying in my role than when a client or potential client will say ‘I feel like we’ve been doing business for years’. It’s a very warming feeling for me, just knowing I can help people in need.

‘Makeovers’, where customers receive a render of their new windows and doors super-imposed over an image of their property, are fast becoming a staple part of the quoting process according to latest analysis of quotes prepared by installers on Tommy Trinder’s Framepoint® platform. The firm reports that in the first three months of the year nearly 11,000 makeovers were prepared for homeowners, compared to just over 9,000 in the same period last year, with over 60% of quotes now accompanied by a visualisation.

“When you consider the ease with which consumers are able to model other significant purchases like cars or kitchens, it feels inevitable that offering the client a visual of their new windows and doors in situ will become the norm,” says Chris Brunsdon, founder and CEO of Tommy Trinder. “Makeovers make sound business for installers too – not only does an impressive visual, but being clear about what you are going to fit at the quoting stage reduces error and rules out misunderstanding from the get-go.”

Crunching the data from eleven thousand visualisations that have been prepared on the Framepoint® platform so far in 2023, Tommy Trinder have identified a number of trending applications for the makeover.

BOOST EFFICIENCY WITH VIRTUAL SHOPFLOOR FROM PST

Efficiency is at the core of any successful fabrication business, which is why many in the industry are already seeing the benefits of Virtual Shopfloor, a unique and powerful manufacturing software from Production Software Technology (PST) that can help achieve a flat pack rate of 97%.

Compatible with a wide range of glazing products, Virtual Shopfloor is a manufacturing-based software that allows fabricators to choose from a library of 3D model templates or create custom designs from scratch using the free form tool. All designs are bespoke to the products they manufacture, and can be built on using easy to use drag and drop tools. Manufacturing and installation reports can then be generated with the option to send instructions directly to CNC machinery.

PST Managing Director Neil Travers explains: “Virtual Shopfloor has been designed with many benefits for modern fabricators – these include the transfer of cutting instructions directly from the platform to the saw interface by creating various saw driver output files, as well as an instant costing feature that allows for the customisation of pricing using a simple matrix and the inclusion of extra costs such as labour and site costs.

“The software also comes with an integrated reporting suite, allowing fabricators to create branded sales and survey reports, as well as numerous manufacturing reports such as full-spec small parts drawings, top cap cutting templates, and customisable hardware printouts.

“Essentially, Virtual Shopfloor eliminates the need for fabricators to use various software programs at once, giving them everything they need in one place, creating a seamless workflow from sales and survey right through to manufacturing.

“With industry-leading flat pack rates, a dramatic drop in trial build rates and substantial annual savings, Virtual Shopfloor is widely recognised as the de-facto solution for the glazing industry, and in today’s competitive market, is the ultimate tool to help fabricators get ahead.” For more information or to sign up to a 14day free trial, visit www.pstonline.co.uk.

I am delighted DE, that you are on board with Part L (and the rest), which has now been with us for a year this month, at least for RMI (Repair, Maintenance, Improvement), or home improvements to you and me; New Build has had a year to catch up, with its own regs now statutory from 15th June 2023, if my memory serves me correctly.

However, an awful lot of your oppos out there hadn’t a clue that the Regs had changed despite their lives depending on it, with FENSA failures apparently going through the roof in the months immediately following the imposition of the new Regs last year. At the risk of being a tad controversial DE, many (most?) installers would be knackered without advice and guidance from us trade fabricators. I have indeed noticed the increasing references to Future Homes. I may have made such a reference myself DE, when I have been promoting Gerda residential doors that you will have seen at the recent FIT Show, where I have exhibited them for the second year. In doing so, I am also guilty as charged of jumping on to that particular bandwagon, one that is gathering pace despite it currently having no steering, only a wheel at each corner and no brakes whatsoever. But let me try to add some clarity, even if there is not a great deal to give at this precise point in time…

DANNY WILLIAMS ‘COLD CALLING’

The Future Homes Standard is a posh name for the Building Regulations for new homes, anticipated to be introduced from 2025. Currently it is just a consultation document with absolutely nothing agreed or even defined in terms of U values, or anything as far as I can tell.

All of us that have referred to ‘Future Homes’ are guessing. And those of us that manufacture windows and doors for the home improvement sector are stretching the reference even further, because whilst whatever happens to refurb may well be influenced by Future Homes, it is by no means cast in stone. Any references to products performing to Future Homes standards are therefore a BIG stretch. However, in contrast to the non-event that most new uplifts to Document L of the Building Regulation seem to be, for some reason, the interest of every man, woman and their dog in the industry (and me) has been captured by the Future Homes Standard, not just two years or more ahead of its anticipated introduction, but with absolutely no idea what it will amount to. And that is entirely encouraging, not least because at last, we seem to be getting energy efficiency. And if it is simply that ‘Future Homes’ sounds sexier than ‘Document L’ then so be it…it’s working!

But why do we have to wait for a notional piece of paper, before we make our products as energy efficient as possible? I have long been an advocate for producing products to perform as well as they can be made to and put my money where my mouth is (OK, lots of money, I get it) when I developed my Signature window, that had the best U value of any casement on the market, as long as ten years ago (put paid to when Synseal hit the skids).

And now, in the installations that we carry out for the NHS, which call for the highest standards, we routinely manufacture and

install windows with U values down to 0.8 W/m2K, every frame now triple glazed. And as you might expect, the windows that I am installing in my own home, are as good as we can realistically manufacture: triple glazed, with solar control and Planitherm in the sandwich in glass units that we manufacture ourselves.

This ‘Future Homes’ issue, however premature it may be, has also shaken the tree to reveal a whole bunch of triple glazing ‘anti vaxers’, otherwise intelligent people that believe triple is the devil incarnate and the end of the glazing world. It is a Luddite attitude that is largely without foundation, as I have proved in commercial terms during the past two years, since the NHS insisted upon it.

We didn’t bleat when the spec was delivered to us and there has not been an issue since and we have now installed the best part of a thousand triple glazed frames. Our fitters haven’t blinked, our vehicles are more than sturdy enough to carry what might be an additional 50 to 60 kilos for an average shipment. But the windows are of course, significantly better performing, in terms of insulation values but also of course, sound attenuation, crucial in health estates. Add in improved security too so I wonder why we don’t just install triple as a matter of course, right now.

Even though we have no concrete idea how Future Homes will shape the market in a couple of years’ time, we do know that the next round of improvements will require triple to fulfil the next level of thermal requirements. Let’s stop the bleating, acknowledge the true value of high performing glass in its various combinations, and recognise where the true value of our windows is achieved. And pay a decent price for IGUs too.

Why wait?

BUILDING OUR SKILLS APPLAUDS KUBU APPRENTICE PART OF BOS’S ‘INSPIRING THE FUTURE’ SERIES

Building Our SkillsMaking Fenestration, Glass and Glazing a Career of Choice has always sought to promote the breadth of career opportunities offered by the industry. The organisation strongly backs apprenticeships as a great starting point for those joining the industry and an employee at Kubu, the smart security specialist, is demonstrating exactly why.

Morgan Fisher joined Kubu straight from school as an apprentice in 2019. Since then, she has worked her way up to Marketing Assistant, and it is clear that she has her sights set on significant further career development.

Morgan says: “The company took me on as an apprentice in business administration. Pretty quickly I was dealing with all sorts of areas of the business, including customer service and key accounts management. Then Covid hit and the company needed me to be very flexible and take on a broad range of tasks. I really learnt ‘on the job’. You could say I was thrown in at the deep end, because Covid added to the everyday business challenges all the staff faced, but the experience shaped me and made me resilient.

“What really showcased the diversity of my skills, I suppose, was last year’s FIT show. I was able to organise quite a bit of it for the company, and this did two things: firstly, it solidified an ambition in me to get involved more in marketing, and secondly it brought my work to the attention of the company’s Head of Marketing, who arranged for me to join the marketing department. Now I’m handling a broad variety of tasks. One day I’m working on video production, another I’m arranging events. It’s challenging but enjoyable. I’ve got a diverse role, and I feel quite independent

now. I’ve really had to rely on my instincts and use my initiative, which has been good for me.

“I’m really passionate about the apprenticeship I completed. It was a fabulous stepping-stone into the career that I’m forging for myself, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend apprenticeships to other people who are starting out and wondering what to do. I had no idea when I started out that the fenestration industry had so many roles on offer. You tend to think of it only in terms of installing windows and doors, don’t you?”

It is not just Kubu putting the seal of approval on Morgan’s career. Having tucked Apprentice of the Year 2021 under her belt, courtesy of the National Apprenticeship Awards, she is optimistic about her future. Morgan adds:

“It’s such a positive thing that Kubu is willing to take on apprentices. The company has really supported me, and I feel it will allow me to progress my career. It’s clear that proper training and qualifications is the way forward, not just for me but for other young people. If you have a can-do attitude and are willing to learn I think the sky’s the limit in this industry!”

Marc Henson, Kubu’s Head of Marketing added: “Morgan has been an inspiration in our team. She has proven time and again that apprenticeships really do work. With the right attitude – both from

Morgan and our staff to support her progression – Morgan has become an integral part of our team, and will only go from strength to strength.

“Being fairly new to the fenestration, glass and glazing industry myself, I’ve got to say I’m surprised at the sheer scope of roles available –from technical IT roles, such as engineering and programming, to highly skilled manual roles and everything in between. There really is a place for everyone – and it’s so friendly too!”

Building Our Skills’ Partnerships Manager, Mark Handley says: “All of us here at Building Our Skills congratulate Morgan on her success, and we wish her well in her future career too of course. She is a shining example of how the apprenticeship system can work for the benefit of both the apprentice and the business concerned.”

With over 50 career paths available in the fenestration industry, Building our Skills is helping to promote this diversity of opportunities. The campaign underlines that there are a multitude of career paths, from design, manufacturing, installation, marketing, finance or IT to warehousing and many others.

GQA HELPS BOHLE RAISE INDUSTRY STANDARDS

Close collaboration with Bohle, the components manufacturer and supplier, showcases the benefits of GQA’s ‘Accredited Training’ service, while helping the company to raise standards in UV bonded glass technologies and practices.

GQA is the fenestration industry’s leading awarding and qualifications-writing organisation. Its Accredited Training service is aimed at employers in the industry who want to have their in-house training endorsed and gives them the opportunity to deliver training that focuses on candidates’ particular needs specific to their role with the employer.

When Bohle wished to develop an optional unit on UV glass bonding as part of a pre-existing Level 2 and 3 NVQ Diploma in Glass Processing, the company turned to GQA’s specialist service to put it in place. This optional unit is now helping Bohle to shape accredited training in UV glass bonding offered by the company today.

Amanda Carr is Bohle’s UV Bonding UK Technical Specialist and is a qualified trainer and assessor in adult learning. She explains:

“Working with GQA hasn’t just resulted in a qualification tailored perfectly to our customers’ and partners’ needs, it’s really given us the opportunity to promote the

benefits of UV bonded glass technologies as a whole. Offering accredited training with a specific standard against which learners can be measured is ideal. This approach is helping to raise standards in this part of the fenestration industry, and needless to say it’s a very positive thing for Bohle to be associated with.

“I really appreciate the impartial support we’ve received from GQA to help maintain and improve industry standards. It’s great that we have such a comfortable relationship with the organisation that results in a productive, open dialogue. Insights from GQA on how we can develop and improve our training offering are invaluable. We’re looking at more ways we can work with the organisation to support our customers further through accredited training. In particular, the area of glass handling is a focus, and we’re also assisting the GGF to achieve standardisation of approach where possible.”

Commenting on its Accredited Training service, GQA’s EQA/Technical Officer, Martin Sadler says:

“Using our Accredited Training service means that employers can develop their own training to suit their employees or their customers’ needs with the GQA stamp of approval to show the quality of the training delivered. The GQA-branded certificate we offer is an important tool and highlights the third party endorsement we bring. We can also help to develop specific courses in the consultation phase of our collaboration.”

In addition to its Accredited Training service, GQA also offers one in ‘Bespoke Qualification’. Together, the two specialist services are helping the fenestration

industry to develop training solutions tailored to the specific needs of employers and their staff. The two initiatives mean that employers can create and accredit in-house developed training courses and learning programmes in addition to utilising existing qualifications.

GQA’s Bespoke Qualification service is aimed at employers who wish to be able to offer those staff and customers undertaking very specific roles the opportunity to work towards gaining a qualification where one does not already exist. The service is perfect for niche specialist areas, which do not lend themselves to meeting the required content of a standard regulated qualification.

GQA has close to 200 qualifications covering a broad variety of sectors. The fenestration industry, just like any other, needs training solutions tailored to its specific needs. The organisation’s services are helping to facilitate this and are contributing to raising standards and assisting in shaping careers.

"Construction must be promoted as a sector in which people can make a positive difference, drive sustainability, improve their communities and leave a real legacy."

Parents don't encourage their children to go into construction

The Chartered Institute of Building, CIOB's The Real Face of Construction survey showed 57 per cent of respondents perceived average annual earnings to be lower than the true figure of £36,000.

CIOB chief executive Caroline Gumble said: "Our survey shows there are big misconceptions around earning potential, job prospects and working conditions."

In fact, construction is £3,000 above the average annual salary across all sectors at £33,000.

The survey shows while earnings across all sectors rose by 15 per cent between 2012 and 2022, the rise for full-time construction workers was 24 per cent.

"Overly physical" and "dangerous" were among the top three answers respondents selected when asked to describe construction jobs despite more positions being office or site-based.

Ms Gumble added: "This is something the sector needs to work together to address if we're to bridge the existing worker shortfall that will over time become bigger if nothing is done."

The study showed the sector was often overlooked by individuals exploring job options or changing their career path. Just seven per cent of respondents said they would recommend construction as a career to their children or other young people.

Londoners are most likely to recommend construction careers, 38 per cent, while those in Wales, 20 per cent, are least likely.

"Without construction workers, including those in IT, planning, administration and management, as well as the frontline trades, there can be no new homes or other infrastructure and our economy will grind to a halt," said Ms Gumble.

Construction is the fourth largest employer in the UK outside of the public sector with 2.1m working in the industry and accounting for six per cent of gross value added to the economy.

The Southeast has the biggest number of construction workers, 381,000, while the east of England has the largest percentage of its total workforce engaged in the sector at 7.9 per cent.

"We want to see construction better represented in schemes to promote STEM - science, technology, engineering and maths - careers and vocational qualifications, not just in construction but more widely, given equal esteem with university degrees.

"Construction must be promoted as a sector in which people can make a positive difference, drive sustainability, improve their communities and leave a real legacy."

Brokers Hank Zarihs Associates said development finance lenders were aware that staff shortages were a factor in residential and commercial projects being held up.

Nearly a quarter of a million extra people are needed in construction by 2027 but outdated perceptions mean it is often overlooked as a career, according to a new report.
