GQA QUALIFICATIONS REACHES

20-YEAR MILESTONE!

CEO of Anglo European and Steel industry expert Paul Sullivan, says high steel and other commodity prices are here to stay and not a temporary blip. For most of us, our exposure to international commodity prices may be characterised by what we pay at the petrol pumps. Sometimes on a weekly basis the ups and downs of the ‘spot market’ that determines the prices for crude oil and refined petroleum products, manifests itself before our eyes on the posts outside every petrol station. We have become inured to price hikes followed by falls within a period of a few weeks; it is the norm and happens before our eyes. The prices go up, sure but then they tumble down again, although perhaps never as low as they were previously. And that is the broad attitude to the dramatic and frequent increases in the prices of other less public commodities that are affecting every aspect of business operations in the window and door sector.

GQA QUALIFICATIONS REACHES The reported shortages and resultant price increases in PVC resin, aluminium, timber, glass, steel and even international shipping containers and carriers, are affecting every transaction. The more astute homeowners looking for new windows and doors may realise that they are likely to pay considerably more for their installation than they might have done just a couple of years ago; and all will have to wait months longer for the work to commence.

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

SUPPLY AND DEMAND ISSUES ARE ONGOING AS IS ATTRACTING GOOD PEOPLE INTO OUR INDUSTRY It’s ironic, but then again it seems it’s the way of the world, that when demand is high shortages of materials help create the perfect storm. I well remember the paper shortage back in ‘80s when we were buying tonnage as pulp and could sell it on at vast profit before it even became paper. There was a huge profit to be made but, of course, we needed the paper. If we’d taken the profit, we would be in the same position again only at an even higher price! And I remember at that time wondering if prices and supply would ever stabilise again. Of course, they did, and we were back to some form of normality, eventually. The current issues are jointly fuelled, both by demand as well as raw material shortages and those shortages are mostly down to manufacturing and suppliers using lockdown time to refurbish and/or replace plant and not getting back up to speed as quickly as they or the industry may like. We’ve spoken before about demand and homeowners taking the opportunity to spend money saved by the absence of holidays, and the like, over the past year – will this continue? Holidays are high on many people’s agenda but where to go and what will be on the ‘green’ list is anyone’s guess? I must admit to having a good laugh when I read that the Green List of allowed destinations should be based on countries that voted for us in the Eurovision Song Contest. Well, that will narrow the options a bit! With apprenticeships and the skills gap allied to the difficulty many are experiencing in getting good staff, I noticed a piece in the Mail On Sunday (so it must be true!) saying that youngsters who choose an apprenticeship over a college are earning up to £7,000 per annum more than those with degrees. It went on to say that that’s no surprise considering universities’ obsession with indoctrination and wokery. The author concluded that if it were a choice between that and actually learning something, she’d know which she would pick! Even back in the late 1960s that choice was there. You opted to look for a job and

work your way up within that company, or get experience and apply for the ‘next job’, with the probability that by the time your pals left uni with some spurious degree, and were looking for a job, you were on the way and earning a decent salary. I always remember someone I worked with who had read Geography at a very minor university and then went on to take a Phd, rejoicing in being able to call himself ‘Doctor’. He was well into his late 20s when he was finally looking for a job but was at least the world authority on ‘The effect of the railways on Victorian England’ – after all, no one else had ever studied or written a paper on that subject! I often wonder how useful that knowledge has been through his career and whether he or anyone else has dusted off the pages and ever read it again. What I’m saying is that practical experience, as offered within our industry, can be more valuable than studying for dubious qualifications and, with a shortage of skilled craftsmen, surely there is a guaranteed career for anyone with practical knowledge? However, our industry will always be competing for those willing to gain the right kind of skills and the choice is there between the array of jobs from plumbing and electricians to plasterers or bricklayers. How do we make fenestration an attractive choice? While I applaud the efforts of those promoting this industry as a career prospect, we still have the problem of actually getting to the prospective workers themselves. I joined an excellent Webinar staged by Building Our Skills that talked about Mentoring and the need to encourage more people in our industry to become mentors and help people become engaged with fenestration. The value of a mentee being able to talk through and get advice from a mentor, as opposed to talking with their line manager, is key. Often – and before I’m buried in a deluge of protesting emails – but not always, the line manager can be the sticking point as having to ask for their advice can be construed as a weakness or a lack of knowledge. If you’re interested in becoming a Mentor, contact Building Our Skills at sayhello@buildingourskills.co.uk. Mentoring and generally helping people work their way upwards in their chosen field within our industry is valuable. However, these initiatives are fine but we’re talking about people who have found their way into fenestration. The problem of attracting them to fenestration in the first place is still the issue if we’re going to fill the skills gap.

Continued from page 1... Such is demand however, that sales keep rolling in, confirming that replacement windows and doors are the homeowner’s favourite improvement but also adding weight to the old adage of retail salespeople being too willing to discount. Only the foolish or desperate will offer discounts to homeowners in the current climate. Prices continue their inexorable climb upwards but as with petrol, surely they will drop back again, right? Absolutely not, says Paul Sullivan, the outspoken, shoot-from-the-hip CEO of steel and aluminium reinforcement supplier Anglo European Group: “The global price rises that we are experiencing currently will actually climb again as we go into 2022 and they will not come back down significantly, if at all, in the foreseeable future. If any supplier tells you otherwise, do not believe them,’ insists Paul. “Suppliers telling their customers that the price hikes are temporary are deceiving their customers and creating a false sense of security,” This is customary straight-talking from the head of the Manchester-based firm that claims the spot as the UK’s largest supplier of steel and aluminium reinforcement for PVC-U window and door frames. As such Anglo European buys around 12,000 tonnes of rolled steel per annum, which is significant for the window and door industry, but which Paul says candidly ‘is tiny compared to car manufacturers and other industries’. Nonetheless, these volumes offer Paul valuable insights into the steel sector: “The increases in steel prices are the result of a number of factors, many of which also affect other materials,” he explained, “and all of which are traced back to the pandemic. Steel mills were closed due to the cut-off of demand early in the pandemic, and when this happens it’s impossible to simply turn them back on again as some areas of the world return to normal post pandemic. China has become a net importer of steel for the first time in more than ten years.” Some steel mills will never re-open, says Paul, as their owners take advantage of the situation to balance their books: “I have been told privately that the billionaire owners of these plants have chosen to keep them closed to keep demand outstripping supply. We regularly hear about the threat of closure of steel mills in South Wales and other parts of the UK because of mounting losses; although they did not know this at the time, the pandemic has ultimately presented an opportunity for the owners to balance the books and make money.” The message that spiralling prices are inevitable appears to be getting through along the supply chain, with the focus now on obtaining adequate supplies of all products to satisfy consumer demand rather than price. Nonetheless, says Paul, suppliers are re-assuring their customers that supplies and prices will return to normal in due course: “This is patently absurd,” says Paul. “Anglo European is paying way over double

4

Paul Sullivan

now for our steel stocks for the first half of 2022, and we have the strongest buying power in this sector. Other materials are similarly affected. “However, whilst we in the UK are doing well with our vaccinations and control of the virus, we should also remember that many of the world’s largest economies are struggling, with demand from those nations remaining rock bottom. The effect of countries such as Brazil and India, for example, returning to normal will further affect supplies,” warns Paul. “If anything, we may experience further problems before markets stabilise.” Paul is emphatic that the reasons for his comments are entirely positive: “At Anglo European we have secured our supplies for the first half of 2022 and our customers can be sure of receiving good stocks of high-quality reinforcement. But we must all face up to the realities of rising prices and product shortages continuing well into the future. I am simply urging fabricators and installers to plan ahead for these scenarios and adapt their businesses accordingly,” explained Paul. “Speaking to our customers, which includes most of the UK’s leading window and door fabricators, they believe that homeowner demand is likely to be strong well into 2022, even as foreign holidays return, with rising house prices adding an additional stimulus.

Onsite 7, the job management software designed for the trade by the trade has reported a strong uptake from new customers due to the software’s ability to saves installers both time and money. Rhys Hoddinott, CEO at Onsite 7, said: “We have been delighted with the uptake for Onsite 7 since we launched at the end of last year. Installers have realised the numerous benefits the easy-to-use software delivers to their businesses and has streamlined their on-site and admin processes by giving them a single source of accurate information at every stage of the job. This saves installers both time in having all the information at hand, and money as it records every level of the installation to eradicate disputes and non-payment.” The Onsite 7 software was expertly designed by a team of industry specialists who recognise first-hand the day-to-day problems that effect installers. It delivers a single source of information for every job, domestic, new build or commercial, you work on, including documentation, instructions, photographs, videos

and contract variations. Everything is transparent and documented within the Onsite 7 platform and can be agreed by the customer at each stage too - which will help in the event of a dispute. Rhys said: “Having worked at the sharp end of installation, we know exactly what businesses go through on a daily basis and have listened to every reason imaginable why a customer can’t or shouldn’t pay. We know the importance of strong team communication, tight management and total job visibility and Onsite 7 delivers this information at every level.” Onsite 7 is suitable for any construction, trade or fenestration business and is not size restrictive. Rhys said: “Whether you have one user or 1000 users, the software can scale up or down to suit an individual company’s needs. And because all information is stored in the cloud, the software is accessible on mobiles, tablets and PC’s giving your team access whether on site or at the office.” Onsite 7 costs just £20 + VAT per month per licence and provides impressive return on investment. It’s a simple but compelling software solution that is fast gaining a reputation for being the easiest and most flexible job management system on the market today. Tel: 0800 0029748 – www.onsite7.co.uk

“Businesses should plan around shortages improving but price rises will continue, for steel and aluminium but also, I suspect, for glass, timber and other materials. Unstructured discounting at any point in the supply chain should cease because there are no deals to be had. Any company offering significant discounts currently, is on a spiral to the bottom. Whilst we have such demand for our products, we should be building for the future because as the recent past has shown, you never know what is round the corner.” For more information about Anglo European visit www.angloeuropeangroup.co.uk.

CUTTING A DASH

Installer management system AdminBase has refined its ‘user interface’ to be as intuitive as driving a car.

IT jargon is enough to turn the bosses of many installation companies cold, ironically even when the language is intended to describe just how simple something is to operate. One of the issues is that such systems are designed and built by geeks – well of course they are! But in the case of AdminBase, which remains Britain’s favourite window and door installer management system after more than twenty years, it was originally designed by the administrator in a window installation company. In fact the reason that Rhonda Ridge, the ‘geek’ behind AdminBase, came up with the idea in the first place, was because of her frustration at having to pull together the admin for each of the departments at the home improvement company where she was working as financial controller, using a series of unconnected spreadsheets and Word documents: “I would get the reports and notes and scraps of paper from every department in my in-tray, and then try to marry everything together,” remembers Rhonda. “And the best people at their jobs were often the worst at admin, with surveyors especially using ‘official’ forms but with notes scrawled all over them in spidery handwriting….a huge risk and when the whole job depended upon their accuracy, it wasn’t helpful. “Overall however the problem was that everything had to be re-entered several times, from original sales quote and acceptance, to survey reports, then any remedials and finally, invoicing. And I remember the owner of the company at the time, was incredible at fitting windows and doors…. but as soon as I mentioned ‘computers’ his eyes would glaze over,” said Rhonda. Those were Rhonda’s ‘formative years’ and the inspiration behind the creation of

6

Ab Initio Managing Director, Rhonda Ridge

Mobile apps for sales, surveyors, installers and remedial engineers feed data into the installer’s AdminBase system

AdminBase which, with almost 4,000 users spread throughout Britain’s window and door installation companies nationwide, ties together the key fundamentals that drove Rhonda to distraction. Single input of key data, linking of every department in the installation process from marketing, through sales, survey, fitting, remedials and invoicing and payment and even processes and devices that eradicate scrawls on scraps of paper, have been at the heart of AdminBase for more than two decades. Now, paradoxically, with AdminBase offering dramatically more sophistication and functionality than ever before, it has also become significantly simpler and more intuitive to use for key functions and especially analysis. And at the heart of the new developments are the principles of car design in the development of a simpler ‘user interface’. “Using feedback from our users we have added a number of features to AdminBase that are designed to allow ‘at-a-glance’ assessment of the business overall at any one time, as well specific functions required for planning,” explained Rhonda. “For example, the AdminBase Dashboard – so called because just like in a car you

can obtain crucial information about key functions quickly and accurately, all together on the screen in front of you – will allow the MD, for example, to look at the status of sales, surveys, installs and a whole range of other data, at a glance at the start of the business day. And from wherever they might be in the world too if they so wish. They may then drill down further , quickly and simply to obtain detailed information. And every element can be easily tailored to suit the user. This function has become a real highlight of Dashboard in the past year, when booming sales have been further complicated by the pandemic,” she added. A further feature that is now included on all web-based versions of AdminBase, one that is available on billions of smart phones throughout the world, is Google Maps. Rhonda and her team have cleverly utilised the simplicity and functionality of Google Maps to plan appointments and check the status of sales, survey and fitting teams. When a potential buyer calls for example, the administrator can pinpoint the caller’s location and immediately see where and when salespeople will be local to the prospect. A nice additional

touch, the system can also show the location of potential show sites for specific project types, such as impressive bi-fold installations, that may be local to the enquirer. And all again, at a glance, and activated at the click of a mouse button. r biggest competitor was technophobia,” quips Rhonda. “But that fear is pretty much behind us. Even the most ardent ‘I don’t do computers’ fitter will check his lottery numbers or football scores using his smart phone and usually a lot more than that. And indeed, the AdminBase apps which use tablet computers such as iPads, puts what is quite sophisticated software in the hands of fitters for whom an impact driver was a step into the unknown. But because the apps look like something they use on their smart phone, they get on with it, and it works. “Currently the main resistance we receive, is that installers say they are too busy at the moment to get involved. But for those that have realised that they need to do something to take back control of their businesses, these additions to AdminBase put them firmly back in the driving seat. www.abinitiosoftware.co.uk

GLASS NEWS INTERVIEW: HWL

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

THE ULTIMATE TIMBER ALTERNATIVE The R9 heritage casement redefined the PVC-U window industry. The application of Timberweld® technology to its manufacture is set to have an equal impact, according to Mark Haley, HWL. R9 has reshaped the PVC-U window industry. The launch of the flush casement, more than a decade ago, creating for the first time a credible alternative to traditional timber casement windows in a low maintenance PVC-U product. The application of Timberweld® to it, is similarly significant. Pioneered by specialist trade fabricator HWL Trade Frames, the launch of a non-glass-bonded 90° jointed R9 window transforms the systems’ trade appeal, eliminating complexities in handling while recreating the detail of a traditional mechanical butt-joint in a welded window. We caught up with Mark Haley, Managing Director, HWL Trade Frames.

Why is the application of Timberweld® so significant? Mark Haley: We’ve been on board with R9 from more or less the beginning. What it’s given the retail industry is something different to sell. 10-years on it’s a much more crowded market place with a lot of competitor systems - but still none of them recreate that traditional 19th Century timber casement as effectively as R9, and that means it’s going to continue to see growth. If there is a single obstacle to that growth, it’s the fact that it’s fabricated either with a mitre joint or as a glass bonded window which is what we used to manufacture, and still do occasionally, if there is a specific requirement continue to do so. That, however, increases the weight. It makes every installation more complicated, increasing costs and eating into margin. That has artificially restricted R9’s market reach, it pushes up costs and installers don’t necessarily want to fit it. In applying Timberweld® to that very strong core offer,

we can eliminate the requirement to glass bond R9 and cut through those ties. Retaining the aesthetic of a mechanicallyjointed casement, it redefines the product and how it’s fitted.

How did you do it? Mark Haley: You think it’s going to be easy. It’s not. We started the process in 2017 and it felt at times like we were fighting an uphill battle. No one had done it but we could see the opportunity for our customers if we could get things across the line.

to get to that place where you’re hitting consistent quality requires a lot of work. It’s why we see a unique commercial opportunity. We have also gone through the accreditation and testing process, our product is PAS24 and Part Q approved. It puts us ahead of the market.

What are the benefits to installers?

Machinery, process - it’s really only the start. We’ve invested a massive amount of time and money in refining what we do, understanding our process properly to deliver consistent quality.

Mark Haley: We’re recreating that butt weld window and door sashes inside and out. This replicates the aesthetic delivered in a 90° mechanical joint in a timber window. What you’re also getting is a significant increase in the structural strength of the sash, which means we don’t need to glass bond it.

A number of other fabricators are testing the water with R9 and Timberweld® but

As an installer that creates a step change because installation becomes infinitely

Mark Haley

easier. You’re taking masses of weight out of the product and that simplifies handling. A two-team job becomes a one team job and that means thee cost of installation goes down by as much as £500 on an average 10 window install. Almost more importantly right now given how busy installers are, you also free-up a second fitting team, you instantly gain masses of capacity and reduce cost, without compromising on performance. We’ve also applied the same process to the manufacture of an R9 Timberweld® open-in door. That creates new market opportunities for installers because it puts them in a unique position of being able to offer a suited range of products.

Are there other benefits aside from installation efficiencies? Mark Haley: Installers have the flexibility to source IGUs from their regular suppliers but offering non-glass bonded R9 also delivers benefits to the homeowner. Consumers are increasingly doing their research, they can appreciate the technical benefits of a product like R9 but they’re also able to understand that if the unit is ever damaged or fails, it can be a headache to put right. We have customers who have won business from installers of glass-bonded R9 purely on the strength of how easy it is to replace the units.

Where do you see the market going? Mark Haley: R9 still offers major growth potential. We’ve removed the barriers or the inhibitors on that growth, making it easier to fit. It’s now about taking that to the homeowner, highlighting those points of differentiation and emphasising how strong an alternative the product is to a traditional timber window. It genuinely sells itself. For more information email sales@hwlwindows.co.uk call 0113 2449006 or log on at www.hwlwindows.co.uk.

TIMBER WINDOWS

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

WHY TIMBER WINDOWS? Leading supplier of windows, doors and stairs, JELD-WEN, has seen a significant increase in demand for timber windows and glazing over the last year. Consumers are spending more time researching the options available for decorating, renovating and building and, as a result, have been recognising the huge importance of choosing products that stand the test of time, are crafted sustainably, and will enable future energy savings. On top of this, lockdown has placed a spotlight on the impact our environment can have on mental health and wellbeing, and as a result, consumers have been looking for smarter glazing options in order to fill their home with more natural light and enjoy the mood-boosting effect. Homeowners and renovators are often spoilt for choice when it comes to designing the exterior of their property and building the ultimate kerb appeal, but understanding how different windows will perform and impact the interior of a home is paramount to ensuring they offer the maximum efficiency, security and aesthetics. Visually, timber frames offer a unique character and charm in comparison to uPVC alternatives, which is particularly important for period or design-led properties. Wooden windows carry a natural warmth and style, and JELD-WEN’s vast timber offering caters to a range of style preferences, with frames that can be easily customised and freshened with new colours over time. The superiority of timber fittings can also influence the desirability of a building, so thinking long-term and making the up-front investment in high-quality and distinctively stylish windows, could make a significant difference to the asking price when homeowners eventually come to sell.

LIVING SUSTAINABLY With homes ranked as the third largest producer of carbon emissions in the UK, it has never been more important to ensure the fundamentals of a property will meet future efficiency requirements. Research by Savills found that 47% of houses built prior to 1900 have a failing EPC rating, and with the government committing to a 100%

10

THE BENEFITS OF MORE LIGHT IN THE HOME

reduction in net carbon emissions by 2025, there is a lot of work to be done in order to reduce any future costs or hurdles when making product replacements, or even coming to sell a property. As this becomes a more urgent issue on the global agenda, there is also plenty of evidence to suggest that plastic windows are significantly worse for the environment than their wooden counterparts. Research by the Wood Window Alliance has suggested that, for those looking to make the minimum impact on the environment while improving the performance of a home, you should choose wood windows. Taking around eight times less energy to produce than uPVC windows, timber frames have a much lower carbon footprint, are recyclable, renewable and a natural insulator, taking cash off the annual heating bill and waste out of landfill. JELD-WEN windows are available in a range of styles and colours, which compliment the natural beauty of the wood, and come with market-

leading guarantees of up to 40-years, so that homeowners can have the confidence that their windows are built to last. In terms of sustainable impact, JELDWEN’s timber windows also come with either double- or triple- glazing. Although the extra pane means it comes at a greater cost than double-glazed glass, homeowners can enjoy vast benefits in comparison. Designed to provide greater heat retention, triple glazing can, in the long term, actually be a smart one-time investment, by minimising the annual cost of energy for years to come. With improved sound insulation, triple glazing also creates a more effective noise barrier for homes that are closely located to a busy road or public transport – perfect for those in more suburban settings or directly exposed to extreme climates. JELD-WEN’s Stormsure Energy+ casement timber window is the highest energy rated design in its range, offering premium energy performance and unrivalled sound insulation. Crafted from FSC-certified softwood timber and premium glass, StormSure Energy+ carries a U-Value of 0.8W, energy rating of A+ and STC rating of 40 (double-glazing is typically 29 – 37). The timber frame comes with a 40-year anti-rot and fungal guarantee, while the tripleglazing is covered for 10 years.

The right glass and glazing can help maximise transmission of natural light and heat from the sun around the home, with optimum insulating qualities to keep rooms warm and bright throughout the day. The last 18 months have demonstrated how important it is to spend time outside, with people’s mental and physical health reaping the benefits from exposure to vitamin D, so the incorporation of more glazing in the home is expected to be a key feature in the future of home design as they allow natural light to flow through rooms. While it’s important to choose the right windows to let the light into the home initially, it’s also worth replacing solid internal or external doors with glazed doors or panels, to allow a greater flow of natural illumination through the home. JELD-WEN has a range of interior and exterior glazed doors, which offer maximum daylight penetration whilst creating the feeling of a larger, more open plan space. Sometimes, even painting existing door and timber window frames in a bright, light-reflecting colour can have a lightening and spacious effect on a room, whilst glazing panels in exterior doors can transform what was once a dark hallway into a light, airy and welcoming space. Using frosted, textured or patterned glass can ensure the balance between allowing scattered light in and retaining privacy where needed. For more information, visit www.jeld-wen.co.uk.

However, that’s not to say that high-quality double-glazing isn’t entirely sufficient, especially if the window has an energy rating of A or B. With lead times from four weeks, all JELD-WEN windows are available in a variety of styles and obscurity, with ‘low emissivity’ coated units helping to further reduce internal condensation, whilst retaining more heat within the home.

ROOFING

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

TAKE YOUR BUSINESS TO NEW HEIGHTS WITH LEKA The conservatory roof market is buoyant, but with a wealth of options available, it makes sense to work with a supplier that offers products that add value to your business. Rhys Hoddinott, Managing Director of roofing innovators, Leka Systems discusses what the company has to offer fabricators and installers. The conservatory market is very strong at the moment with the boom from the domestic sector over the last twelve months. Having spent more time in their homes than at any other time, more consumers are looking to increase their living space by either building new extensions or conservatories, or repurposing their existing conservatory. As a result of the domestic demand, new build or retrofit conservatory roofs has hit an all-time high and with installers’ order books still full over the next few months, it is showing little sign of slowing down. This is good news for the industry, but when it comes to conservatory roof products, it’s become a crowded sector. It’s hardly surprising as there are lots of opportunities now available so there are numerous products competing to tap into them. This wealth of products can actually present a problem for fabricators and installers when deciding what roofing systems are right for their businesses and, as importantly, are readily accepted by the consumer. At Leka Systems we have been setting the standard in thermally efficient roofing products for some time with our patented Leka Warm Roof, our Leka Orangery Roof and the new Leka xi modular freestanding conservatory system. All the products in the

Leka arsenal have been purposely designed to deliver what today’s consumer is looking for and therefore supports all current market trends. Take solid conservatory roofs, for example. Over half of fabricators and installers think sales of solid roofs are overtaking sales of traditional glazed roofs, so it’s a growth area and one we have witnessed at Leka for some time. Leka roofs are up to 40% lighter than other replacement solid roof solutions, which means that in most retro-fit projects, the existing conservatory frames, providing they are fully reinforced, are able to take the weight of the new Leka roofing system without additional reinforcement. This opens up a world of design possibilities and adds real value to your portfolio. For customers wanting the benefits that only a solid conservatory roof can deliver, but still bringing in natural light, the Leka Skylight is the perfect product. It is a fully glazed unit with a neatly finished surround that doesn’t need roof bar caps. It is available in any height and has a maximum width of 800mm, which offers flexible alternatives to opening vents.

orangery roofs and delivers a U value of just 0.15 W/m²K thanks to the structurally tested, high grade GRP construction, which also means no risk of cold bridging or condensation. It is the perfect product for both new-build orangery style conservatories as well as retro-fit projects.

The intelligently designed Leka Skylights are quick and simple to install, which saves time and money on site and helps installers to increase both productivity and profitability. Furthermore, the skylights give both Leka installers an additional upsell opportunity which is important on every sale.

For fabricators looking to tap into the boom in demand for home extensions and standalone garden rooms/home offices the Leka xi modular conservatory base system ticks all the boxes. It’s a modular system that’s tailored to the homeowner’s requirements and is constructed using a Leka base, Leka walls and the Leka roof system. There are three- or four-sided options, so it can be used for both home extensions and standalone garden rooms.

Similarly, our Leka Orangery roof system taps into the trend for thermally efficient

Independent research, commissioned by Deceuninck to determine homeowner preferences for colour and finish when purchasing new windows has also revealed the importance of products that can provide a high level of sound proofing. Glass News reports on the results of this research which was conducted by YouGov at the end of December 2020, using an online interview administered to the YouGov UK panel of 800,000+ individuals. A total of 2000 plus interviews were conducted amongst a sample of 18+ UK adults (including Norther Ireland).

From this sample a universe of homeowners was profiled made up of 49% male and 51% female respondents. Of these 1% were in the 18-24 age bracket; 11% were 25-34; 18% were aged 35-44; 17% 45-54; and 53% were 55+. Socio economic groupings were 63% ABC1 and 37% C2DE.

influential factors, with 75% of homeowners stating that frame colour was important to them when considering new windows and 96% saying that matching the overall appearance was also key.

Deceuninck has led the way in recognising the important role that windows can play in reducing noise within the home, especially those situated close to roads, railways or flight paths, and the positive effect that they can play in improving occupant wellbeing.

The style of window was also a critical factor. Given the choice, 62% of those interviewed said that they preferred a flush finish over standard casements, a trend that proved to be consistent across all demographics and for all types of property, from period to modern build.

In 2018, working with the University of Salford, a UKAS accredited testing facility, it was the first window systems company in the UK to commit to systematic testing of its product range. It now holds certified acoustic test data across its window range, including casement, tilt-and-turn and Fully Reversible Windows. Deceuninck was also the first PVC system house to sign up to the BFRC’s new Noise Reduction Rating scheme. Launched in August 2020, this is similar in concept to the BFRC’s Energy Ratings scheme, allowing system companies and manufacturers to demonstrate the acoustic performance of their products to homeowners.

“Noise pollution is an issue that is increasingly affecting the quality of people’s lives,” says Rob McGlennon, Managing Director, Deceuninck. “There’s a lot more to it than just getting a good night’s sleep, as important as that is.

The value of the BFRC scheme has since been confirmed through independent research, commissioned by Deceuninck and carried out by YouGov, that set out to identify the main influences on homeowners who are considering purchasing replacement windows.

“Prolonged exposure to unwanted noise can result in hypertension and can even lead

At a headline level, the survey found that colour and finish were one of the most

16

While the survey also revealed a wealth of data on the influence of energy efficiency, security and cost, products that could reduce unwanted noise in a home were regarded as just as important – if not more so – than those designed to keep out the cold or unwanted intruders. Overall, nearly half of all those interviewed (49%) said that sound proofing was very important when choosing replacement windows, with an additional 39% stating that it was fairly important. “Where we saw clear preferences for different colours depending on the age group of those interviewed (younger homeowners typically preferred smooth greys whereas the over 55s were more likely to choose a woodgrain finish) sound proofing scored consistently regardless of demographic,” explains Rob. “At a push, you could say that it was marginally more important for those aged over 55, with 53% stating that sound proofing was important, compared to 46%

of 25 to 34 year olds, but overall the results were pretty well defined. Regardless of their age, homeowners want homes that are insulated against unwanted noise! “That’s true regardless of the age and style of the property as well,” he continues. “Again, 49% of those who took part in our survey said that sound proofing was very important to them, whether they owned a modern semi in town or a period home in the countryside. “This presents a number of opportunities. We have evidenced the value of acoustic performance to consumers with our survey and through the BFRC Noise Reduction Scheme we have a clear way of communicating our commitment to cutting noise and improving quality of life within a home. Our customers are in an excellent position to benefit from that. “Thanks to the wealth of data they now have at their disposal, they are also uniquely equipped to tailor their approach at point of sale,” he concludes. “They can take any property, and any demographic of homeowner and they can essentially cross reference with our research to determine preferences for a range of influencing factors, from colour and style, to security and cost. “When it comes to making the most of current market conditions, they are in a commanding position to win sales over the competition.” For more information call 01249 816 969, email deceuninck.ltd@deceuninck.com or visit www.deceuninck.co.uk.

ALL SQUARE FOR FURTHER RESIDENCE GROWTH

BIFOLD LOCAL SEES SIGNIFICANT GROWTH WITH STELLAR Trade and domestic fabricator Bifold Local started manufacturing the Stellar aluminium system from Epwin Window Systems in February 2021 and is already seeing significant growth on the back of the decision. In fact, demand for the Stellar Aluminium Bifold Door in particular means it’s having to invest in new automated fabrication machinery to keep pace with demand. Liam Duffy, Director at Bifold Local, says Stellar’s aesthetics are proving very popular with his customers. “Stellar has the slim profiles that are so popular with consumers and the bifold door has real appeal. It’s allowing us to capitalise on demand for this popular style of door.” The door aesthetics are enhanced by the impressive sash sizes the Stellar bifold door can achieve. Sashes can be as large as 1,200mm wide and 2,500mm high, with a maximum height plus width of 3,500mm, adding even more appeal especially with wider door apertures. Bifold Local is also benefiting from the ease of installation of the Stellar Aluminium Bifold Door. In fact, with features such as patented knock-in beads, it is the aluminium system that’s as easy to fit as PVC-U. Liam comments: “Our installers like the rapid installation thanks to the pre-

gasketed knock-in glazing beads that save so much time when fitting. The pre-inserted gaskets don’t overstretch either, which adds to the overall door high-end aesthetics but also eliminates call backs to site. For my money it’s the best aluminium bifold door on the market.” Bifold Local is based in Bootle on Merseyside. It manufactures and installs aluminium windows and doors throughout the UK with a fast and reliable service. A well-established aluminium fabricator, Bifold Local is a new name as a result of a recent rebranding.

R2 is the architectural highlight of The Residence Collection, and like R9, shares the same 100mm platform front to back, 9 chambers and the same external dimensions, but instead of a period inspired outer frame, there’s one that’s distinctly square. Other window frames typically offer 3 or 5 chambers and are usually 70mm systems looking almost identical inside. R2 offers bold design differences, with superior thermal, acoustic, strength and security performances. With consumers looking to invest in high end products and with average installation

As an experienced company, Bifold Local turned to triple award-winning Stellar to help it capitalise on the growth in retail aluminium. With sales so strong, it’s clear it’s a decision that is already paying off.

TWC HOME IMPROVEMENTS ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR £250,000 NEW SHOWROOM IN SWINDON location is well-known by local people and gives us additional space to be more creative and to showcase our increasing range of doors, windows and living spaces.”

TWC, which has been supporting homeowners for the last thirty years, has unveiled a £250,000 investment in an impressive facility facing the Elgin Drive roundabout in the town.

He continued: “We’re particularly pleased to create the area’s first dedicated conservatory showroom and are looking at setting up a continually changing display so that we have seven different examples in there at any one time. Work should be completed in the next few months with a grand opening planned for September.”

The former home of the Blade Motor Group will provide the family-run company with the space to create a huge window display, the biggest door showroom in this part of the country and seven conservatory displays to stir the imagination on home designs. It comes at the end of a challenging 18 months, which saw the firm adapt to a new way of working and embrace more digitally focused marketing that has contributed to a sales increase of 30% despite the pandemic. Andy Hill, Managing Director of TWC, commented: “The showroom is an exciting part of our growth plans and will give us a fantastic environment to meet potential and existing customers to talk through their ideas. Andy went on to add: “We actually secured more sales in 2020 than we did the year before and the next twelve months looks like following a similar theme. Maybe it seems a bit mad to invest £250,000 into setting up a new showroom during a pandemic, but

“It's the same reason we kept advertising while others stopped to save money - we wanted to keep our brand out there as a show of strength. Now we want to expand, to keep growing and to create new local jobs.” Greg Kane, Chief Executive of Conservatory Outlet, concluded: “TWC’s drive and enthusiasm for bringing new designs and products to market fits perfectly with our own approach and the fact it has grown during the pandemic is testament to Andy and his outstanding team.

When the pandemic started and restrictions were put in place, the company pivoted to set-up a new way of quoting and introducing online viewings and zoom calls for its client base, which also stretches into parts of Oxfordshire. MORLEY GLASS AND B&P WINDOWS TEAM UP FOR GLASS RECYCLING

APEER ANNOUNCES £500K MACHINERY INVESTMENT DURING MAYOR’S VISIT Apeer has announced another sizable investment in machinery for 2021, during a site visit by the local council’s Mayor to see the factory’s latest extension and to hear about the business’s continuing successful growth and recent workforce expansion. The visit by the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, Cllr Peter Johnston, follows what has been an exceptional time for Apeer doors and sister brand Lumi windows, based in Ballymena, Northern Ireland. Following two factory expansions – most recently, the completion of an additional 20,000ft2 extension – to house multiple plant and machine investments over the past four years, the business has also recently increased its workforce with the creation of 45 new jobs. Among the machines now set to be installed in the newly expanded plant as part of this latest investment are a 5-axis CNC router, a second 4-head seamless welder, a 4-axis CNC machining centre and a ceramic roller robotic cleaner. In addition, a 4-head plasma treatment machine is to be delivered to the site in the summer. The Mayor requested the visit to see first hand what is now one of the largest manufacturing businesses in the area. He met with Apeer’s senior management team to get an overview of the business and how it has grown in the past five years – and to discover how, despite the challenges of the pandemic, Apeer has managed to maintain its strong growth position by targeting

specific elements of its marketing and focusing on quality. “The past year has been a time of great challenges for our industry but also great opportunity for us, which we have been quick to capitalise on,” said Apeer’s Production Director Chris Wilson. “Since re-opening our doors safely after lockdown, we’ve seen unprecedented demand for our composite doors and Lumi windows as people who have spent so much time at home now look to upgrade their homes with the best in craftsmanship and built-to-last quality. “Lumi, our award-winning frameless window and door range, has taken the selfbuild market here by storm. And with the projection of more homes being built across the UK, we expect demand to remain high and we are determined to grow the business through 2021 and beyond. “This latest round of investment in new machinery will enable us to continue to increase workflow, efficiencies and overall productivity to help feed this demand. This, along with our ongoing investment in digital marketing to further build our Apeer and Lumi brands, will help ensure we stay at the top of our game. Our aim is to continue to be the first port of call for customers who want unrivalled quality windows and doors.” www.apeer.co.uk

Industry-leading integral blinds manufacturer Morley Glass and Wakefield-based B&P Windows have teamed up to reduce their carbon footprints further by supplying all postconsumer glass products to Morley Glass to be put through their on-site glass crusher. Since 2019, Morley Glass has been accepting postconsumer glass and IGU products for their glass crusher which sits at their Leeds site. To date, the company has reduced their CO2 emissions by a staggering 135,504kg. That crushed glass then goes back into the market via recycling and will go on to be used in numerous applications for decades to come. B&P Windows, based in Wakefield for 40 years, have made huge efforts to ensure that all post-consumer and office-based waste is recycled and that nothing goes into the ground. All their old PVCU, timber and aluminium frames are recycled and have been for a long time. The company also uses a dedicate skip service provided by Wakefield council that ensures anything that is put into the skip is taken away and processed correctly to

make sure that none of it ends up at landfill sites. This new partnership with Morley Glass is set to expand that effort further, with both companies dedicated to reducing their carbon footprint and impact on the environment as much as possible. Ian Short, Managing Director at Morley Glass commented: “We know B&P Windows have been making huge efforts to be as green as possible for years. We have worked together for around two decades and have a great working relationship, so to be able to help them to continue their efforts to be as environmentally friendly as possible only strengthens our bond further.” Justin Grafton-Holt, Director at B&P Windows said: “We have worked with Morley Glass for years and have admired not only their product and

professionalism, but their activities outside of the glazing sector and their dedication to reducing their impact on the environment as much as possible. This falls perfectly in line with our longer-term vision and it’s great to be able to team up and keep as much postconsumer waste out of the ground as possible!” Morley Glass is the UK fenestration sector’s leading integral blinds manufacturer and has recently launched the brand new SV+ Slider System to its wider range. EDGETECH AND QUANEX MARK TEN YEARS OF PARTNERSHIP It’s been ten years since world-renowned spacer manufacturer Edgetech became part of billion-dollar building products group Quanex. Back in 2011, Edgetech was already a leading spacer supplier, and one of fenestration’s most forward-thinking companies. It was that legacy of innovation and product excellence that caught the attention of Quanex, which had grown from humble beginnings in South Lyon, Michigan to become a New York Stock Exchange-listed building products powerhouse. “This is a fantastic milestone, and has given us all cause to reflect on everything Edgetech and Quanex have achieved together over the last decade,” comments Edgetech Managing Director Chris Alderson.

“From the very beginning, the two businesses were an excellent fit – both committed to health and safety, employee wellbeing, product innovation, sustainability, and much more. “Since 2011, those synergies have enabled us to continue pushing boundaries, developing new products, and cementing Edgetech’s reputation as a global leader in spacer technology. “Fittingly, as we enter our second decade as part of Quanex, we’re currently in the process of implementing a new, group-wide four tier strategy designed to guide our development in the coming years. “Each of the four tiers represents a crucial stakeholder that we serve – customers, employees, shareholders, and the community.

VEKA LAUNCHES STATE OF

THE ART UK VIRTUAL TOUR

VEKA plc has introduced a state of the art virtual tour allowing fabricators to view the factory, including the new Lamination building, from anywhere in the world.

The virtual tour has been developed as many customers commented that one of the highlights of meeting VEKA was seeing the impressive plant and sheer scale of the operation. The tour mirrors a personal tour and follows the flow of the process of manufacturing VEKA’s profile, from the exclusive mix right through being loaded on to their fleet.

The huge site in Burnley, Lancashire, covers 400,000 square feet and spans two postcodes. It employs 350 people and produces over 30 million metres of profile every year.

The online tour will be available via a password protected link on their website and contains hotspots and information zones providing behind the scenes knowledge and information about the company.

The new virtual tour, which works similar to Google streetview, allows customers to ‘walk through’ VEKA from the comfort of their own home or office.

Dawn Stockell, VEKA plc Marketing Director, commented: “The pandemic has meant that we have had to embrace all things digital, which has given us

new opportunities to bring value to our customers. The scale of our factory is often something that surprises people and we have been looking at a way we can connect our customers to the VEKA experience without the need for face to face contact or when time and distance is an issue. Although we prefer to welcome our visitors with a brew and biscuits, the quality of the virtual tour provides the next best thing.” The online experience guides visitors from the mixing plant to the testing lab where raw materials and compound are tested and then moves onto the extrusion floor which houses 32 lines extruding 100 tonnes of profile every day. The Lamination Building is one of the newest areas on the VEKA site, has only been fully operational in 2021, and was created to respond to the the growing demand for coloured windows and doors.

The tour concludes with an insight into the packaging of the product and a glimpse into the High Bay which can perform up to 120 picks per hour ensuring the supply and demand of customers is delivered. The virtual tour doesn’t stop at the factory, it also provides an insight in to life at VEKA from the conference room facilities to the offices; home to everything from compliance to customer service and everything in between. LEON DAY TEAMS UP WITH ROSEVIEW Well-known industry figure Leon Day has teamed up with respected sash window manufacturer Roseview Windows as brand ambassador. At the same time, Roseview are supporting Leon as key sponsor for his much-anticipated return to UK MotoX racing. Leon is best-known within the industry for heading up Universal Arches, which he sold in 2017 after building it up from a loss-making business to one of the best-known brands in uPVC windows. Leon was also instrumental in setting up and organising the two MADI Ball Rallies in 2015 and 2016, which raised over £230,000 the Anthony Nolan Trust. Less well-known is Leon’s love for MotoX racing. Before Universal Arches Leon was one of the UK’s top competitive MotoX riders, racing for TeamGreen Kawasaki. Supported by Roseview, he now intends to return to the track in the veterans class of the BMSA racing calendar. Leon comments on his return: “The window industry and MotoX are my two passions, both of which I’ve really missed. This arrangement with Roseview is the perfect way to return to both. The Vets class of modern MotoX draws an incredible following, and – with Roseview’s support – Team Roseview Kawasaki will take it by storm! Similarly, Roseview are one of the window industry’s most well-respected brands. I wouldn’t work with a company I don’t believe in, but I’m proud to be working with Roseview.” Steve Bygrave, Roseview Chairman comments: “I first met Leon in the build-up to the inaugural MADI Ball Rally, and we became firm friends straight away. We’ve kept in touch ever since and when Leon mentioned his plan to return to MotoX, the opportunity to work with him for mutual benefit was too good to pass up. Leon doesn’t do anything by halves, so we know that in both his racing and his work with Roseview it will be a great collaboration.” Currently Leon is training and practicing, with a view to launching Team Roseview Kawasaki at the annual BSMA meeting in Devon later this year. He’s also working with Roseview now, both behind the scenes and on plans for this year’s FIT Show. For more information visit www.roseview.co.uk or call 01234 712657.

It follows a period of rapid growth for the PVC-U sash window supplier, which has recently added over 50 new staff to cope with demand for its popular ECOSlide sash window. Andy commented: “Since my appointment as Group MD in 2019 we have embarked on an investment strategy that has enabled us to scale the business rapidly, and we have seen a real transformation during that time and we’re on track for 70% growth.” “However, the nature of the role and location requires a regular 500 mile roundtrip and so it is time for me to explore new challenges and opportunities. I leave the business in great shape and on a rapid growth trajectory.” Victorian Sliders is a vertically integrated PVC-U sash manufacturer with in-house extrusion, glass processing, manufacturing and recycling, operating from a state-ofthe-art 250,000 sq ft site in South Wales and

LINIAR SMASHES ITS CLIMATE CHANGE AGREEMENT APEER WELCOMES TWO NEW FACES BY 54%, SAVING 20,400 TONNES OF CO²! Whilst the main focus of the last 12 months has been on keeping its workforce safe during the pandemic and meeting the high demand in the marketplace, PVCu systems manufacturer Liniar has also continued to drive forward its Climate Change Agreement (CCA) targets. April 2021 saw the latest audit of Liniar’s ISO 14001 accreditation which highlights the progress made to date – and the results show Liniar a staggering 53.95% ahead of its CCA target in Q1 2021! Liniar first signed a Climate Change Agreement with the Environment Agency in 2018 as part of the Government’s Energy

Saving Opportunity Scheme. As part of this, the industry-leading systems company implemented a comprehensive Environmental Management Policy and achieved ISO 14001 accreditation that same year.

CARBON REDUCTION EFFORTS To ensure its carbon footprint continually shrinks, Liniar put into place a phased plan of action. This included: • Replacing machinery with new, more energy efficient versions – both in its extrusion hall and lamination facility. • Installing heat pumps with metering and controls to manage heating more efficiently and cut out the use of fossil fuels and electricity. • Replacing incandescent bulbs with more energy-efficient LED bulbs throughout the facility. • Modernising the Liniar fleet – with HGVs converted to Euro 6 engines and hybrid and electric cars replacing diesel company cars. • Underground water recycling of approximately 4 billion litres of water annually.

Prior to the ISO 14001 audit in April 2021, all items on the phased plan of action had been achieved, with more activities planned for the coming years to further reduce Liniar’s carbon footprint and result in an even greener systems company.

ISO 14001 AUDIT RESULTS At the end of the target period of Liniar’s Climate Change Agreement, Liniar’s facility has achieved a cumulative Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) of 1,618.97 kWhp/ tonne, compared to a target of 3,513.028 kWhp/tonne. This puts Liniar ahead of its period target to reduce its carbon footprint by almost 54%, saving 20,410 metric tonnes of carbon! “Sustainability and reducing our impact on the environment is something we’re incredibly passionate about at Liniar,” comments Group Managing Director Martin Thurley. “We’re extremely proud of the audit results and have even more plans in place to continue our good work in the future.

• Continuing the focus on recycling scrap PVCu into the outdoor range, which Liniar has been pioneering since 1993.

“Our progress to date has been a team effort and we look forward to making more adjustments to further limit the carbon emissions from our manufacturing operations.”

• Implementing new recycling initiatives and creating new products manufactured to use recycled PVCu.

STELLAR PERFECTION FOR £2.5 MILLION RENOVATED PROPERTY Stellar aluminium windows and doors have been manufactured and installed in a palatial £2.5 million newly renovated property in St Brelade, Jersey. The modern detached four-bedroom home was fitted with fourteen Stellar aluminium fully flush casement windows, two sets of Stellar double doors and two single Stellar doors. All Stellar products were manufactured by specialist fabricator Capital Windows of Uxbridge, Greater London and fitted by local Jersey installer, Window Glaze Servicing Ltd. The property is set in a desirable location and exacting standards were needed throughout the whole renovation, including the choice of windows and doors. Stellar was selected due to the system’s high-end flush and symmetrical aesthetics that proved popular with the homeowner. Neil Keeble, Owner of Window Glaze Servicing Ltd, said: “We have been selling and fitting Stellar aluminium windows and doors for some time and the products are superb. The flush aesthetics are the best on the market and allow us to secure work in the middle to premium end of the retail market.

He added: “Stellar products are easy to glaze thanks to the pre-gasketed knock in beads too. Not only does this save time on site, but leaves an incredibly neat finish every time, which was important on such a prestigious and design-led property.”

St Hellier-based Window Glaze has been fitting aluminium and PVC-U windows, doors and conservatories for several years and delivers attention to detail at every level. Neil concludes: “As a business built on a reputation for high-end installations, having Stellar products in our portfolio has allowed us to secure several prestigious jobs as the products never fail to impress the homeowner. We are delighted with the finished result on this project and looking forward to starting our next Stellar project.”

The multi-award-winning Stellar aluminium window and door system has been capturing headlines since it came to market in 2019. The system was purposely designed to harness the development of the PVC-U sector and give the domestic market the best in cutting-edge aluminium windows and doors. Philip Parry, Business Development Director of Epwin Window Systems, said: “Stellar’s flush finish inside and out sets itself apart from everything else in the market at this time and gives fabricators and installers a visible point of difference. Flush windows have fast become a window of choice with consumers over the past few years, and as can be seen in this superb Jersey project, in Stellar you have

FENSA HIGHLIGHTS GREEN SCHEME BENEFITS OF GLAZING IN RADIO BROADCASTS FENSA has promoted the energy efficiency benefits of replacement windows and doors in a series of radio interviews, as it continues its efforts to ensure that glazing is “front and centre” in any future government schemes designed to ‘green’ the UK’s housing stock, as well as continuing to raise the profile of FENSA Approved Installers with homeowners across the country. Following the cancellation of the Green Homes Grant initiative earlier this year, FENSA’s Director of Membership, Chris Beedel and GGF Chief Development Officer, Anda Gregory hit the airwaves the length and breadth of the UK – from Aberdeenshire’s Deveron FM to BBC Three Counties Radio to raise awareness of the crucial role of glazing in improving energy efficiency in our homes, and in turn, meeting the government’s ambitious net zero targets. Speaking live on air, Chris said: “As one of the glazing industry’s leading voices, along with our parent organisation, the Glass and Glazing Federation, we’re looking to provide the government with a solution to their Green Homes Grant problems, in terms of making homes more energy efficient and helping future schemes really become the major success that they should be.” Anda added: “Glazing really can make a positive impact on energy efficiency for all of us, as homeowners or renters, by

“Windows and doors should be front and centre of any future ‘green’ scheme because they pull people in with these added benefits – which you don’t get from ‘behind the scenes’ type energy efficiency measures, such as loft insulation.” While the Green Homes Grant scheme sparked confusion among consumers and installers, FENSA is also calling for any future initiative to be simplified for both parties.

reducing the requirement for heating, and in turn, reducing heating bills.” While glazing was included in the Green Homes Grant scheme as a secondary measure, FENSA continues to lobby for it to be made a primary concern in any future government initiatives. Anda continued: “As well as energy efficiency benefits, new windows and doors can also make a property look amazing, and generally improve a resident’s quality of life, by reducing noise pollution and increasing security, for example.

PROFILE 22’S OPTIMA WINDOWS AND DOORS SELECTED FOR CARE HOME AND ASSISTED LIVING APARTMENTS Over 300 Optima casement windows and 60 doors from Profile 22 have been manufactured and installed in a new 85-bed care home and 45 assisted living apartments in Sutton Coldfield. The developer is renowned for delivering exceptional quality projects, which meant suppliers had to meet exacting standards and quality specifications. The window and door contract were awarded to Sutton Designs in Kingstanding, Birmingham, with manufacturing undertaken by Profile 22’s Approved Commercial Manufacturer, Central Window Systems in West Bromwich. The two companies had worked on previous care projects, which meant that as well as being able to demonstrate their ability to meet the tender requirements for this project they also brought a proven track record. The window and door system specified for the project was award-winning Optima from Profile 22. The high-specification system comes with an impressive set of credentials and design flexibility to meet all commercial project requirements. In this project, all windows were fitted with openout restrictors for the safety or the residents and all window and doors needed to comply with fire and smoke escape protection measures. Optima offers market-leading structural strength and high-security features and casement windows are PAS24:2016 approved as standard which was important to meet the project specification. The windows and doors were manufactured in Anthracite Grey on White to match other

28

developments in the building contractor’s portfolio and create a sleek, modern aluminium aesthetic. Sutton Designs is an experienced new build and commercial window installation company and has worked with Central Window Systems for over three years. The two companies worked in close partnership to ensure all windows and doors were manufactured and installed to the required timescales. The project was completed during the Covid-19 pandemic, which meant appropriate health and safety considerations also needed to be taken into account. The completed project will provide modern and well-equipped homes for the residents. Jon Gregory, Owner of Sutton Design concluded: “The quality of Optima from Profile 22 and the commercial expertise of Central Window Systems were fundamental to the project’s success. This is a very impressive development and we were delighted to have been part of its construction.” Tel: 0808 101 4143 – www.profile22.co.uk

Anda added: “Any qualifying criteria for installers needs to be realistic and we believe that being a FENSA Approved Installer should more than suffice for any scheme that might be launched in the future. This would enable a much wider take-up and increase availability of installers – a big win for consumers as well.” Unlike the Green Homes Grant, which allowed only single to double replacement glazing, FENSA also maintains that any future scheme should permit replacing old double glazing with new, due to the energy efficiency benefits created by the technical advances of recent years. Peter Adams, General Manager at Capital Windows, said: “We started manufacturing Stellar last year because we were impressed with the unique flush aesthetics of the aluminium system which offered something very different. The market certainly agrees – as demand for Stellar from our customers continues to rise. We’re delighted it’s proving so successful.” He added: “Stellar is a very easy system to sell into the domestic market. Consumers in particular are as impressed by the flush aesthetics as we were as they appreciate its modern, contemporary appeal. And installers find it so easy to fit thanks to the pre-gasketed clip in beads which dramatically speeds up installation.” Peter also highlights the versatility of the system. “It’s fast becoming the go-to aluminium system for us because of the sophisticated aesthetics it delivers. It allows our customers to sell with confidence into the premium end of the domestic market, so much so that Stellar products were recently installed in a £2.5 million bespoke property as it was the perfect choice for such a highprofile home.” Stellar is the only aluminium system on the market to offer a genuinely fully flush window, with flush lines inside and out. This is achieved thanks to the innovative Reverse Butt Joint that means no dummy sashes or

reverse adaptor profiles are needed – fixed and opening panes butt together quickly and easily. Mark Austin, Sales Director (aluminium) at Epwin Window Systems, said: “Stellar was designed to create the sleek, streamlined aluminium aesthetics that’s so popular with consumers and offers 30% slimmer sightlines than its main competitor systems. The unique aesthetics and highend contemporary detailing have proven popular and this is evident in the growing demand that Capital Windows has experienced over the last twelve months.” Capital Windows markets Stellar under the brand name Evoke, because it’s a window and door system that is extremely memorable. The Stellar fabricator is based in Uxbridge, Greater London and works with domestic, trade and commercial sectors throughout the South East of England. For over 35 years the company has positioned itself as a specialist designer, supplier and installer of the latest generation of technically advanced window and door products. And it seems that Stellar is helping the fabricator take its reputation to the next level. Tel: 0845 300 9356 www.stellaraluminium.co.uk

AVANTEK AND LINIAR COLLABORATION

LEADS TO WORLD CLASS CUSTOMER SUPPORT Fabrication machinery is essential for automation and precision – but in order to ensure a smooth set-up, you need to know the machinery provider will work hand in hand with the systems company. Not only will this help to avoid ‘blame games’ when unexpected delays occur, there’s a deeper level of understanding that actively helps fabricators find the optimal solution for their business.

Director and both technical teams to ensure the required machinery was in stock and available for delivery, that the factory layout was as efficient as possible and that staff were trained on their use of the machinery and the fabrication of Liniar products.

In the case of industry leading machinery company, Avantek and her sister company Liniar, this holds true no matter which window system is fabricated – the team works with every brand of PVCu and aluminium system in the market. However, for those choosing to work with both Liniar and Avantek, the benefits can be much greater than the sum of their parts.

ASSISTING ONGOING GROWTH

SMASHING START UP TARGETS For new start-ups the synergy between Liniar and Avantek is a boon. In the case of Scottish fabricator, Window Supply Company it enabled them to open their business with all the required machinery in record time. The timeline from proposal to opening was approximately 11 weeks – a tight deadline that would have been a stretch for other companies to achieve was hit without any bumps along the way. Liniar’s Regional Sales Director worked in tandem with Avantek’s Sales

30

Window Supply Company Director Duncan Murray commented, “Our first week of production was an absolute success. We smashed not only our sales target but also our production target. All the visitors who’ve come by the factory say that Liniar is the best window they’ve ever seen – they all loved the product and its quality. “The Avantek team have been proactive from start to finish. We set a start date that we didn’t believe any other machinery company would have been able to achieve, but Avantek and Liniar crushed it together. We know that they will be there to support us as we grow and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.”

A Liniar fabricator since 2012, Lancashirebased Pearl Windows has also been an Avantek Machinery customer since 2015 – including purchasing its fifth Supercut cutting and machining centre earlier this year. With business booming at the start of 2021, Pearl invested a whopping £500k into new machinery to expand its capacity an additional 30%. For owner Jeff Walsh, choosing yet another Supercut was an easy decision: “With four Supercuts already in operation, it just made sense to expand with another cutting and machining centre,” says Jeff. “The last two years have presented challenges we’d never seen before with fast-paced changes required to ensure ongoing success. With Liniar and Avantek’s help we’ve been able to ensure we remain flexible and adaptable in order to cope with whatever challenges we face in the future. Adding our fifth Supercut provides the

reliability and quality that is required for our long-term strategy.”

TAKING BUSINESS TO THE NEXT LEVEL John Birch, Managing Director at Swadlincote Windows in Derbyshire has personally experienced breakdowns in communication between systems and machinery companies – and for many years this delayed him upgrading his machinery. “We’d been working with the same machines for more than a decade. While we knew we had to upgrade, making that decision wasn’t easy. The ‘blame game’ that happens between machinery companies and systems houses had put us off buying a machining centre in the past – but that all changed with Avantek Machinery,” explains John. Wanting to be one of the first fabricators of Liniar’s revolutionary Resurgence window, John and his team got to witness the synergy between Liniar and Avantek first-hand as the fabricator was tooled up to manufacture the system. During the process, John had the opportunity to speak with Jamie Munday, Avantek’s Sales Director about the Supercut cutting and machining centre and after

experiencing how seamlessly the two companies worked together, it was clear that a Supercut was in Swadlincote Windows’ future. “Exceptional customer service is what we’ve come to expect from both Liniar and Avantek. Throughout the process of tooling for Resurgence and more recently the installation of our new Supercut, both companies did everything they could to ensure we were aware of any changes – and there weren’t any surprises,” John states.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY Group Sales Director Nigel Bishop summarises the benefits for fabricators: “Having an in-depth understanding of how a systems company operates is vital for a machinery company – and the Avantek and Liniar teams have worked closely for many years to establish great communication. It’s a win/win for fabricators, as they can leave the details to us, knowing they’ll be kept updated every step of the way.” For more information about Avantek Machinery and its comprehensive range of specialised machinery, visit www.avantekmachinery.co.uk. THE VEXED ISSUE OF

THE TRICKLE VENT

As consultations around the Government’s new Future Buildings Standard close, VEKA Plc’s Technical Director, Paul Kennington, applauds plans to make homes more energy efficient but questions whether the vexed issue of ventilation has been solved. The results are in; over the last two years, the Government has been running consultations that first covered domestic new build through the Future Homes Standard, with their responses now published, and a second round of discussions covering Future Building Standards. The responses from industry are now being considered, with new legislation expected by June 2022.

The changes are designed to improve the energy performance of new homes, as part of the UK’s commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Existing homes will also be subject to the new higher standards, with more energy efficient replacements and repairs designed to make homes warmer and reduce bills. Overall, the likely changes will pose few problems and VEKA is already set up to achieve any new, improved U values. The big issue, however, is likely to be ventilation, and the continuing saga of the trickle vent. Prior to the consultations, we spent a lot of time speaking to our customers and explaining that while many of the suggested changes were improvements, the issue of trickle vents simply hasn’t been thought through. In theory they make sense but in practice they’ve become an unwelcome addition to doors and windows, disliked in equal measure by fabricators, installers and homeowners. The problem is that as homes have become better insulated, they have also become less ventilated. Drafts have become a thing of the past, cutting off the natural flow of air that once moved on odours, pollutants and condensation.

32

“In new build homes, there are already requirements to provide a certain amount of ventilation, and the easiest and cheapest way to do this is through a vent in a window. But the legislation could now move on to include replacement windows, too. Currently, if an existing window doesn’t have ventilation already, then while it is considered good practice to include it in any replacement, it isn’t mandatory. “

Paul Kennington

It was an issue once solved by leaving a window open, something people are now less likely to do for security reasons. As a result, trickle vents have been seen as the answer. Apart from the fact that aesthetically they’re not great, they also mean that after decades of working to improve the U value of windows, we are now being asked to install them with a hole in; not great when you’re trying to make homes more energy efficient. The thermal properties of windows are calculated as a whole unit, without taking into account the effects of trickle ventilators. So, for example, while a window can claim

“The changes are designed to improve the energy performance of new homes, as part of the UK’s commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Existing homes will also be subject to the new higher standards, with more energy efficient replacements and repairs designed to make homes warmer and reduce bills.”

a value of 1.4, its performance is actually below this level because of the vent. Although new windows will have better performance when it comes to issues such as air leakage, the improvement over an existing window may only be marginal because of the ventilator. Trickle vents also most needed when people are in the house, yet occupancy tends to be highest at night when, for a large period of time, curtains are drawn, cancelling out any benefit the vents will bring. Many homeowners also install new windows to help cut out noise, yet trickle vents can actually make the noise inside a room more intense, leading to disappointed customers and frustrated installers. Schemes highlighting the acoustic performance of windows don’t account for trickle ventilators, so as with thermal calculations, the actual acoustic performance will be reduced. In new build homes, there are already requirements to provide a certain amount of ventilation, and the easiest and cheapest way to do this is through a vent in a window. But the legislation could now move on to include replacement windows, too. Currently, if an existing window doesn’t have ventilation already, then while it is considered good practice to include it in any replacement, it isn’t mandatory. However,

Part F of the new proposal suggests that if replacing windows is likely to make the building less compliant with ventilation requirements than before the work was carried out, then additional ventilation should be provided. There are some anomalies in the proposals, too. For instance if you refurbish a bathroom or kitchen, and it hasn't got extraction ventilation, then you don't have to include it in the refit. Yet these are the two areas in a home that produce the most pollutants and odours. There are also questions around increased costs, with the government suggesting that including trickle vents as standard on a new window would add just £2, yet our own conservative estimate puts the true cost at closer to £25. Hopefully the Government’s response will provide some clarification. I truly believe that trickle vents pose more of a headache to the fenestration industry than any other single issue at the moment, from aesthetics to cost, customer satisfaction to manufacturing modifications. We need to find an alternative, and come up with a smarter way of creating the optimum environment inside a building; the Government will soon let us know how quickly we need to do this. STEEL WINDOW ASSOCIATION LAUNCHES

GRANADA SECONDARY ASSOCIATE MEMBER OPTION FOR INDUSTRY SUPPLIERS GLAZING UNVEILS NEW WEBSITE The progressive Steel Window Association An associate member, James - www.steel-window-association.co.uk - has recently launched a three-tier system for the industry's manufacturing membership and, as a further refinement to the new structure, an "associate member" package has been developed.

Designed for suppliers to the steel window and door industry in the UK, an associate membership, which costs £1200 pa, comprises a listing on the SWA website with contact details and links to the individual websites. In addition, companies can issue product information to SWA members via the association's Secretariat and have access to comprehensive information on product and market development. An invitation to the SWA AGM is also included giving the opportunity to meet key members and industry influencers.

Barrett of Steel Window Fittings www.steelwindowfittings.com - explains the benefits to his organisation, "Being able to meet a number of our larger customers at the same time is really beneficial. We hear about our customers' needs which gives SWF a clear focus on what we should be working on. Not only can we discuss topics as a group, there is always time to talk to individuals about their own requirements. Of course, we are careful to keep customers' confidentiality but this is rarely an issue as members are part of the Steel Window Association and we all have a common goal in moving the industry and the product forward. There are benefits in numbers!" For further information on the Steel Window Association, please visit www.steel-window-association.co.uk.

Granada Secondary Glazing has launched its new, state-of-the-art website www.granadaglazing.com to improve and simplify the online journey for homeowners, trade customers and commercial partners alike. Featuring an increased emphasis on functionality and navigation, the completely redesigned website allows users to access the information they need as quickly and easily as possible. There is no lengthy quotation process; users are able to submit an enquiry in just a few clicks. Zoe Grafton, Trade Sales Manager at Granada Secondary Glazing, says: “We’ve

been working incredibly hard on the new website for a number of months now and are delighted to finally be able to launch it to homeowners and trade partners alike. We’re set to embark on a comprehensive digital marketing strategy over the next 12 months and recognised the importance of having a website that matched our lofty ambitions. “From a technical perspective, the new website performs better, more efficiently and quicker than its predecessor, seeing us well placed to capitalise on an increase in traffic. This really marks the start of our commitment to an aggressive digital marketing approach.” Mike Latham, Commercial Director at Granada Secondary Glazing, adds: “We consulted and engaged with a number of architects and specifiers throughout the development of the new site. From a commercial perspective our goal was simple, to display the hugely impressive work we’ve carried out on projects across the UK and to outline the value of secondary glazing. “We’ve been blown away by the response so far and look forward to seeing the new site continue to grow and develop over the coming months.” For more information about the Granada Secondary Glazing range, please call on 01909 499 899, visit www.gsecg.com or email: info@granadaglazing.com.

FENTRADE ALUMINIUM DELIVERS FOR

KEEPING CUSTOMERS

COMFORTABLE IN STYLE WITH TUFFX

SWANSEA LANDMARK DEVELOPMENT

Fentrade Aluminium has recently manufactured and supplied sixteen sets of non-thermally broken commercial shopfront doors and screens as part of £6m makeover project at a landmark development in Swansea.

As views go, Dylan’s restaurant, in the charming Victorian Welsh coastal town of Criccieth, must have one of the best. Right by the sea, it looks out across the bay towards Criccieth’s medieval castle in one direction and the more distant Harlech Castle in the other. The customer’s dining experience has always been paramount at Dylan’s, and never more so than this past year. Just like pubs, cafés and restaurants all over the country, as lockdown eased Dylan’s looked to maximise the comfort of their seating areas to make the most of their outdoor space. Dylan’s decided to add a frameless glass balustrade to their terrace, to protect customers from coastal breezes without impacting on the stunning views. And the UK’s safety glass specialists TuffX were delighted to be chosen to supply 30 panels of 15mm toughened safety glass with dubbed corners for the job. The balustrade channel was fitted on a staggered curve, to follow the elegantly sweeping shape of the dramatically glassfronted building. Inspired by the Art Deco movement, the 1950’s Grade II-listed building was designed by architectural icon Clough Williams Ellis, who is most famous for his whimsical Portmeirion Village, further along the coast. TuffX’s high-quality glass for the balustrade meant the exterior appearance of this

impressive building remained unobstructed. Inside, diners can continue to enjoy the beautiful light and views courtesy of the floor-to ceiling glass windows, while those outside can now dine in comfort protected from sea winds, enjoying the same unimpaired scenic backdrop. Graham Price, TuffX’s Managing Director, said: “Not many restaurants can boast a view or a building like Dylan’s, and the glass balustrade provides the perfect, practical addition to make the most of them. “For all food and drink establishments this past year has meant re-evaluating the value of outdoor seating areas and the importance of providing customers with the option of comfortable and appealing outside spaces. Updating or introducing balustrades like this, made from toughened safety glass, is an simple way for venues to add a safe, easy to maintain and modern solution to improve their outdoor areas.” www.tuffxglass.co.uk

The four-storey building called Orchard House has undergone a total refurbishment and now consists of new commercial premises on the ground floor, modern offices on the first floor and 52 one- and two-bedroom apartments on the upper levels. The building transformation is part of Swansea Council’s regeneration strategy that aims to facilitate more people living and working in the city centre. The entire ground floor development contract was awarded to experienced commercial installer Window Solutions Wales, a trading name of WSW UK Group Limited. The Fentrade team worked closely with Window Solutions Wales to meet the exacting standards needed on the project. The commercial shopfront doors featured opening fanlights for additional ventilation and both the doors and screens were specified in RAL7016 grey to form a ribbon of frames around the whole ground floor element. The project ran smoothly, and attention to detail was evident throughout every stage. Chris Reeks, Director at Fentrade, said: “The high-profile project had exacting standards which our experienced team were able to deliver. Hands-on project

management and tight communication were critical at every stage as we delivered products to site, in full, to meet the phased installation schedule set out by our customer.” Window Solutions Wales has been working with Fentrade since 2018. Paul Armstrong, Director of WSW Group UK Limited, commented on another successful project delivered by the manufacturer: “We enjoy dealing with the Fentrade team as their attention to detail across a project is always reassuring. We will always face many issues when dealing with a large contract such as this, but we know with Fentrade the quality of the products and the service we receive will never be one of those issues!” The newly refurbished building will totally transform the area and will be an excellent addition to Swansea’s fast-emerging, modern cityscape. SKYLIGHT & ROOF LANTERN FOCUS

HARDWARE & SECURITY EXPERT

SHEERLINE LAUNCHES ‘NEXT ENDURANCE ENHANCE SECURITY GENERATION’ S1 ROOF LANTERN OFFER WITH £2,000 GUARANTEE Sheerline continues to expand its impressive range of innovative aluminium products with the launch of a next generation aluminium roof lantern. It combines sleek low-level styling and cuttingedge performance to create one of the most secure, thermally efficient and beautiful lanterns on the market. The S1 roof lantern has been designed from scratch by Garnalex’ expert team, and the end result is ground-breaking. S1 is not only ultra-secure and energy efficient but stylish and modern, compared to clunky traditional systems. Available in three stocked colours across 10 different styles, with two and four-way options and designed around 28mm glazing, this advanced roof lantern has the options to suit any project. Sheerline’s S1 redefines the product category’s security expectations, often a weak point in lantern roofs, with a number of unique innovations. Overlapping cast end caps prevent the bar and top caps from being removed and anti-tamper screws are provided to attach end caps to roof bars. High-security 2 and 4 way top caps are also bolted through from the inside preventing easy removal. The arrangement of the interlocking eaves beam means that the glass cannot be removed from the outside and features a unique patent pending glass lock, lowering the risk of break-ins even further. Designed with the same innovative Thermlock® multi-chambered thermal

breaks as the Classic and Prestige systems, the S1 roof lantern offers maximum thermal performance throughout its design, from the eaves beam and ridge to each rafter assembly. Cold bridging is prevented by ensuring the aluminium is fully encapsulated below the glass line with a unique co-extruded perimeter seal creating a weathertight seal for enhanced performance and energy efficiency. Slim, consistent 50mm rafter, hip and ridge sightlines maximise light flooding into homes, creating bright, airy interiors and banishing gloom. The S1 lantern also features ultra low line aesthetics, so rafter and hip top caps sit just 8mm above the glazing level on the exterior, creating a sleek modern look. Completing this refined architectural appearance, corner and rafter end caps run perfectly in line with its perimeter, so no unsightly angles jut out to spoil the perfect lines of this beautiful highperformance aluminium lantern. It creates the ideal balance of understated refinement, contemporary looks and exacting quality standards. Roger Hartshorn, CEO of Garnalex, says: “We expect the S1 roof lantern to transform the aluminium roof lantern market, much like Classic and Prestige have done for aluminium windows and doors. Not only is it beautiful, but it also tackles some of the security issues that customers face with existing products. Our team of experts have reinvented aluminium roof lanterns into something that is ultra-secure and thermally efficient as well as being stylish and contemporary. The latest addition to the Sheerline family is fabricator friendly and offers easy, trouble-free installation. And it’s available on short, reliable lead times.” To discover more call Sheerline on 01332 883960, email info@sheerline.com or visit www.sheerline.com. Endurance Doors boast arguably the most secure composite door, thanks to a number of product innovations and now the security guarantee from their own branded ABS, dimpled key 3-Star cylinder has been increased to £2,000. This unrivalled 3-Star cylinder developed in partnership with ABS is a standard offering with all Endurance Doors and it carries the Sold Secure Diamond mark and is Kitemarked. With the door slab itself having survived a heavy sledgehammer test courtesy of Hunter from Gladiators, the iconic TV series of the 1990’s, which has been widely shared on social media, the Endurance Door security proposition is now stronger and more robust than ever before. Each Endurance Door is supplied with 5 dimple keys as standard and additional keys can be cut at hundreds of outlets across the UK, without having to revert back to the original cylinder supplier. The cylinders are also manufactured outside of China on cutting edge, automated production lines and they have endured an extended cycle test to ensure they have a life expectancy well in excess of 10 years, while the precision engineered key has been designed to last a lifetime.

ERA has expanded its premium Fab&Fix collection of suited door hardware with the launch of a new Forged range of finishes and handles, ideal for period and traditional properties. Expertly designed to replicate traditional forged iron hardware, combined with the benefits of state-of-the-art manufacturing, the Forged range is available in two new finishes, Forged Black and Aged Hardex Pewter, across both existing and new furniture.

The range also includes Fab&Fix’s established Balmoral, Windsor and Heritage door handles, Architectural and Nu Mail letterplates, and its popular Bull Ring knocker and Decorative door knob. The new suite of hardware enables fabricators and installers to provide homeowners with affordable, high performance hardware that replicates the appearance of forged iron and aged pewter, with added performance and security benefits.

YALE LAUNCHES VERTEX™ THE COMPREHENSIVE HARDWARE RANGE FOR SASH WINDOWS Yale has launched its complete Vertex™ range of vertical sliding hardware for the easy opening and closing of sash windows – the result of months of intense development by the company’s technical experts. Suitable for PVC, timber and aluminium sash windows, the Vertex™ package is made up of a combination of balances and functional and decorative hardware that together provide the ultimate solution for sash windows across a range of industry profiles. Grant Stratford, Technical Director for Window Hardware at Yale, comments: “The Vertex™ package represents a massive investment for us, involving a number of bespoke machines at our Cheltenham facility. It’s the result of some extremely clever engineering, as well as many consultations with independent experts over an extended period. “As with all our products, the package has been rigorously tested, so users can rest assured that it will work with their windows for many years.”

THE PERFECT BALANCE Central to the Vertex™ offering is the spring balance, a specially engineered helix rod that, thanks to its spiral movement, takes on up to 80 percent of the operational force – ensuring ease of opening with no sticking sashes for all users. For sashes up to 60kg in weight, the package provides pretension balances tested to 20,000 cycles, these are made bespoke to each window, taking into account the weight, glazing, size and profile to deliver a perfectly tailored solution. For lighter and smaller windows between 2kg and 18kg in weight and 200mm width and 1800mm high – such as those made of aluminium and secondary glazing vertical sliding sashes – this package offers wind-up balances tested to 10,000 cycles. All balances in the Yale Vertex™ range are available in white, brown, black and grey tubes.

FUNCTIONAL HARDWARE The Vertex™ package features a variety of functional hardware, expertly designed for maximum efficiency and ease-of-use. Among these are the pivot bar and its carrier, which allows for easy lift or slide assembly of the sash to the frame. The patented pivot shoe has been cleverly designed to incorporate a 3 way braking system giving an additional locking advantage over traditional designs, along with an easy connection to the spring balance. Also within the range is sash security blocks to give that extra security feature and protection against intruders, while the tilt arms and tilt restrictors (available in standard or quick release versions) allow users to choose between tilt modes to make cleaning and maintenance more convenient. The combination of Yale Vertex hardware has naturally been designed with security in mind and complies with the test requirements of PAS24:2016

DECORATIVE HARDWARE As well as functional solutions, the Vertex™ package features a range of decorative hardware, pre launched last year and now also available from stockists. This is comprised of pole rings, sash lifts, finials, travel restrictors, sash locks and keeps – all available in a variety of traditional colours and tested to 240 hours of salt-spray exposure. The decorative hardware in the Vertex™ range is designed to complement the traditional aesthetics of sash windows commonly found in British period-style homes.

A SERVICE YOU CAN TRUST All the products in the Vertex™ range have been designed and manufactured to the highest standard at Yale’s dedicated manufacturing facility in Cheltenham, ensuring their functionality is second-to-none. The Vertex™ range is covered under the well-established Yale Lifetime Security Guarantee, which includes up to £3,250 towards repairs or replacements, insurance excess and securing the property in the event of a break-in, plus discounts on the Yale store.

Paul Atkinson, Managing Director at Yale, comments: “We are delighted to be launching Vertex™ the comprehensive VS hardware system, it is the culmination of a great deal of hard work by the technical team at Cheltenham and significant investment in our UK manufacturing base. Vertex™ marks a brand-new venture into a new hardware sector for Yale, and one that we’re very excited about. We believe this is a product range that will be very well received in the sliding sash windows market.” To support fabricators and installers, Yale has produced a series of videos on the new Vertex™ range. These are available to view here: https://assaabloy.box.com/s/nsf5tym7xyyzp3v6vqftg3kzigagqkut. TOTAL HARDWARE’S SUPERIOR 25 STAINLESS STEEL RANGE PROVING POPULAR Nationwide hardware supplier, Total Hardware has confirmed their recently launched Superior 25 stainless steel door hardware range is proving popular with customers. For Chris Pell, General Manager at Total Hardware, there are many reasons why fabricators and installers are turning towards stainless steel door hardware, not least of which is the durability and unrivalled protection against corrosion. Chris said: “When it comes to product durability and strong aesthetic appeal, our Superior 25 stainless steel door hardware range ticks all the boxes. Since the launch, we have seen a growing upturn in demand, especially from customers working in the premium end of the domestic market. With the continued demand for high-end door products, fitting Superior 25 door hardware makes perfect sense as the hardware delivers both long service life and superior functionality. And with a 25-year surface finish

guarantee and 10-year mechanical guarantee, installers can fit with absolute confidence.” The new Superior 25 stainless steel door hardware range includes letterplates, LBP lever/pad door handles, LBP lever/ lever door handles, slimline pull escutcheon, pull bars, urn knockers and stainless steel letters and numerals all delivering a suited range of door hardware for high-quality, coordinated aesthetics. The combination of our expansion and our commitment to offering a large and diverse hardware product portfolio allows us to cement our position as the go-to hardware supplier of choice.”

The smart home market in the UK is a £multi-billion affair and growing strongly, so it’s providing window and door professionals with the opportunity to tap into a new market, close more sales and to future-proof installations. There’s little work to be done at the point of frame manufacture and the installation process for a door or window equipped for a Kubu smart-sensor, is exactly the same as it is for a standard glazed product. It is only once the Kubu smart-sensor is inserted into the captive slot in the multipoint lock does the door or window become smart and this can be done directly by the consumer, much like changing the SIM card on the phone. Activation is just a matter of minutes and the benefits from having doors and windows that can notify you if they are locked or unlocked is considerable. There’s also a clever geo-fencing feature within the app, that tells you as you leave the perimeter of the Kubu hub network if any doors or windows are unlocked e.g. when you leave a property or get into a vehicle. It’s all part of a wider strategy for

Kubu to be a cornerstone of the rapidly evolving smart home market. Anni Hudson, marketing manager of Window Warehouse commented: ‘Kubu is a revelation and could help change the way in which we market and sell windows and doors. The responsibility is directly with Kubu for activation, whilst the choice as whether to go smart is with the consumer, yet the USP’s and opportunities reside with our trade partners. In all it’s a wonderful piece of smart home tech and at a good price point too.’ Lauren Bromley, head of brand for Kubu added: ‘We’re getting enquiries by the day from installers looking to be smart-sensor equipped. The door activations are now happening daily and with the window smart-sensor due to be launched in the coming months, it’s the perfect opportunity for installers to join our smart revolution.’ For information on Window Warehouse please visit www.window-warehouse.co.uk. KENRICK TACKLES OPPORTUNIST BURGLARIES WITH FAST LOCK The pandemic may have left most of us staying in more than ever before, but the lockdown has not deterred burglars from targeting properties – whether we’re at home or not.

main difference is when closing the door; the user simply lifts the lever as they enter through the door and it is then securely locked from both sides without having to use a key. To unlock the door, the user turns the key and pushes the handle down.

Now, with the summer months approaching and warmer weather meaning we can spend more time in the garden, Kenrick is urging fabricators and installers to choose high security hardware products and help protect homeowners from opportunist burglaries. Steve Williams, Kenrick’s sales and marketing director, explains: “Opportunist burglary is becoming increasingly common with figures from the Office for National Statistics showing that 64 per cent of burglaries in England and Wales happened while residents were at home. People need to be vigilant and guard against this invasive crime, so we want to prompt everyone to think about how vulnerable they are to sneak-in thefts and to take measures to secure their homes properly. “It’s so easy to leave doors and windows unlocked while you sit out in the garden in the sun, but this gives a burglar the perfect opportunity to sneak into your home and steal your valuables without you even knowing about it. Perhaps even more sinister is home invasion burglary, where a burglar physically forces their way into someone’s home as they open their front door.

Unlike fixed pad locks, the user has to physically throw the lever to engage the hooks and lock the door, which means they can’t be locked out accidentally. This design feature also overcomes the risk of an adult being locked out by a small child shutting the door from the inside or by a gust of wind blowing the door closed. “Falling victim to this type of crime is very upsetting, especially when so many of us have been affected one way or another by Coronavirus. It is however easy and cost-effective for homeowners to protect themselves from these types of crime with the proper security products.” Designed to combat against opportunist burglary and home invasion burglary, Kenrick’s Excalibur Fast Lock is a high security door lock that provides fast, secure locking on the front door – the route into the house for more than 75% of burglaries.

Built to the same exacting standards as the acclaimed Excalibur door lock, The Excalibur Fast Lock uses three sintered steel hooks and two steel anti lift bolts to deliver its strength and security. Three roller cams provide =/- 1mm adjustable compression, with one roller placed directly below the gearbox to aid with compression in the centre of the door. The gearbox is sprung on both spindles, which means that there is no need for costly sprung handle sets. The door lock will also work with a thumb turn cylinder as an option which eliminates the need to use the key on the inside to open the door.

For greater flexibility, the system allows The Excalibur Fast Lock operates in the Julie Warner same way as a standard lever/lever lock. The Excalibur Fast Lock is available on all variants of 35mm backset locks in a choice of lever/lever, twin spindle and split spindle. It is compatible with PVC-u, timber and composite doors. It meets the requirements of PAS 24, 2012 and Secured by Design. WINDOWS TURNS TO NEWVIEW FIND NEW TRI-TEC HAFFNER FOR NEW MACHINERY WAYS TO WORK SMART WITH FRAMEPOINT®  Tri-tec Windows in Chelmsford has just purchased an SMR-5 Five Head Welding Machine from Haffner and the machine is already making a big difference to the company.

Based in Worthing, Newview Glazing Specialists are a premium supplier to homeowners, trade, and commercial clients, and quoting software Framepoint® from Tommy Trinder has transformed their sales process. As an ISO accredited company with a high-profile client list and a vast portfolio of volume residential work, Newview are constantly looking for innovative ways to work smart, reduce waste and provide a quality service to customers. “Framepoint® has helped us push to the next level,” says Tom Cox, Sales Manager. “We were using varying software packages before that were a little bit old fashioned, a bit clunky. We needed something that was more of a seamless approach to dealing with customers, quoting works, and getting quotations sent out accurately. That’s when we started using Framepoint®, and it’s been a real success!” With its best-in-class visualisation and an impressive user interface, Framepoint  has been a real hit with homeowners and has assisted with conversions: “Feedback from clients is really good. When you can draw things with a client and actually explain in detail what we’re talking about, that’s where this software really does come into its own.” As a sales veteran with years of experience spanning several sectors, Tom has found Framepoint® to be a breath of fresh air. “Working in construction, sometimes things can be a little basic so really this feels like the industry catching up. You need to use technology to push your business forward, it’s as simple as that.” Newview are the principle contractor for London City airport and have worked with Heathrow Airport for over ten years,

42

so they’re no strangers to high volume contracts. Framepoint® has helped the team stay organised in the face of unprecedented demand and “really has sped up the process” Tom said. “We visit a lot of clients, I would have four to five appointments per day and then create multiple quotes for each client. When you’re doing that on pen and paper it can get quite messy, it used to take a long time. With Framepoint  my original drawings are used throughout because they’re accurate. There’s no misinterpretation, the detail is there. It’s a lot slicker, a lot quicker!” As an ISO company, Newview are “always looking for ways of streamlining and using less”, Tom said. “Using Framepoint  does make a big difference to us – we’ve noticed that we’re ordering less paper! It makes things easier, quicker, simpler, more efficient.” Framepoint® is subscription based and billed monthly. To find out more about Framepoint® and book a free demo installers should visit www.tommytrinder.com.

Fletcher Hodgins, Managing Director at Tri-Tec, said: “We invested in the SMR-5 to give us additional capacity and improved quality. Our machine operator is amazed with the speed and quality of the welds the machine delivers compared to a standard welding machine. It’s more than living up to expectations.” The SMR-5 is just the latest in a series of purchases Tri-tec has made from Haffner. The company invested in a TT405 Double Mitre Saw, KB515 Single Head Welding Machine, FT386 Drain Slot Router and a reconditioned Four Head Welder at the end of 2019. Fletcher said: “We were impressed with the speed and quality of the machinery we bought in 2019, in particular the TT405 Double Mitre Saw. Our experience of working with Haffner and their Regional Sales Manager, Bryan Dando back then, combined with the results we’ve achieved with the machinery, meant we were happy to come back to Haffner to support us with our latest investment.” Tri-tec Windows is a well-established, family-run fabricator, specialising in highquality workmanship, first-class customer service and competitively priced PVC-U windows, doors and conservatories for homeowners across Essex. Fletcher says that automated machinery supports his business

by reducing the risk of human error and enhancing overall product quality which is fundamental to his business success.

The company is one of many fabricators to return to Haffner when new machine investment is needed. Dave Thomas, Managing Director at Haffner, said: “We are delighted Tri-tec are pleased with their recent purchase as repeat customers form the foundation of our business. We continue to market the speed, efficiency and accuracy of our SMR-5 welder, but the best endorsement of its credentials is always from the operators and we are delighted they concur with our claims.” Award-winning Haffner prides itself on the quality of its machinery and service and offers the largest and most comprehensive range of machines to support fabricators of all sizes. The latest addition in the Haffner arsenal is their exclusive partnership with Graf Synergy to supply their cutting-edge machines into the UK fenestration market and further cement its reputation as the goto machinery supplier of choice. Its comprehensive machinery offer and continued repeat business is among the reasons Haffner has doubled the size of its Staffordshire headquarters, added a new 1,990 sqm showroom extension and opened a new 37,000 sqm purpose-built manufacturing factory to meet current and future demand. Dave concludes: “We want fabricators to invest in machines that help their business and work with them to make sure they make the right investment. It’s an approach that builds trust and means they’ll return to us in the future, as Tri-tec Windows have done.” Tel: 01785 222421 www.haffnermurat.com

WHAT’S YOUR OPINION?

KNOCK, KNOCK… WHO’S THERE? THE LITTLE PINK BOOK OF JOKES

Dear Chris, I’ve just seen the fairly chastening statistic from Building Our Skills of more than 1100 installer vacancies being advertised on UK job sites at the end of the first week in May. The problem of not attracting enough newcomers into the industry has obviously been compounded by the fact that a good many skilled migrants have left the UK either because of Covid or because of Brexit – or a bit of both. It’s not just in installation where we’re seeing massive shortfalls either – you only have to glance on social media to see that pretty much the whole industry is looking to recruit, and with varying degrees of success. In the machinery market, the biggest challenge we all face is in recruiting enough installation and service engineers. At Emmegi, we have the advantage that we can call on a pool of skilled engineers based out of our Italian HQ, but the current situation around travel and quarantine has made that more difficult than it usually is over recent months. Like the rest of the industry, we obviously face huge competition for the best recruits from other sectors which might be perceived as being more glamorous or exciting, but our recent experience suggests that we can attract high quality candidates if we package our offering in the right way. Emmegi (UK), for instance, has just recruited an engineer from a UK based Formula 1 racing team and that’s probably the biggest contrast you can get with fenestration. No one is suggesting that it’s an easy sell, but a really competitive salary and benefits package, a supportive working environment, and a clearly defined career path in an industry which is fast paced and fast growing definitely help. As we all face much the same situation, I would urge other parts of the industry to take the same radical approach as we’ve done and think outside of the normal recruitment pool. I’d like to think our success could be replicated by other businesses – not just in machinery but in other parts of the industry where there are transferrable skills. Yours sincerely Wayne Hunter Operations Manager, Emmegi (UK)

"At Emmegi, we have the advantage that we can call on a pool of skilled engineers based out of our Italian HQ, but the current situation around travel and quarantine has made that more difficult than it usually is over recent months."

Dear Chris, I’m writing to congratulate Giovanni Laporta for Smart Ready®’s milestone win in its trademark dispute with Yale. Brisant has seen many of our initiatives blatantly copied. While we normally just poke fun at it on social media, it was great to see the success of this legal battle. It would be easy to think that our followers (a diplomatic description) copy what we do because they lack imagination, but we’ve come to a different conclusion. Invariably followers are quite happy to not give their customers more. The problem they have is that businesses like Smart Ready® and Brisant Secure are always looking to find new ways to excite customers. This then forces them to follow (essentially copy) - it’s the difference between doing as little as you can get away with or doing as much as you can to give customers what they want.

Feel free to get in touch with your views on the industry, legislation, government, or even the newspaper.

We’re surprised that after two years, no one has yet ‘followed’ our Sweet Rose Gold furniture. However, I’m sure they will soon, now they see we have proved there is a demand! But thankfully, agility is another trait followers lack.

As 21st birthday celebrations continue, Window Widgets have launched a fun and exciting charity campaign to help collate content for their Little Pink Book of Jokes, which everyone has the opportunity to be part of. Everyone across the industry is encouraged to submit jokes for the Little Pink Book and this can be done by emailing jokes@windowwidgets.co.uk, visiting the landing page at www.windowwidgets.co.uk/widgetscomedy or via social media using the #WidgetsComedy hashtag. In addition to the main publication, there will be a separate children’s activity and joke book available, where new Window Widgets superhero brand icons will be introduced. These will be distributed to local schools and can be requested for other children and schools across the UK. Both books will be published and available later in the year. All proceeds from this campaign will be split equally between two very special charities, GM Fundraising and We Mind & Kelly Matters. The goal is to raise £21,000 throughout the year and this will be achieved by offering supporting companies the opportunity to be a main sponsor of one of the books, sponsor a joke, or a full page. VOICE OF THE INDUSTRY

THE RETURN OF THE FIT SHOW!

‘How are you celebrating the return of the FIT Show? As an exhibitor and are you launching new products and can you give us a preview? Or as a visitor and, if so, what are you looking for? How important is FIT to our industry and to you, specifically? Is it all about work or is there a social element, being able to meet again with colleagues from other companies and organisations?

David Thornton Chair, The Window Company (Contracts) Suffice to say, I’m on first name terms with the reservation department in the hotel we stay at for the FIT Show. Our rooms have been rebooked since the rescheduled dates were announced and The Window Company (Contracts) team will definitely be out in force for the Sunday and Monday of the show. As a commercial installer, the FIT Show has become massively important to us over the years. It’s where we meet potential new suppliers, catch up with friends and colleagues from across the industry and always spot useful new products and innovations to bring back for our fitting teams. I’m slightly disappointed that some of the industry’s biggest names won’t be exhibiting this year, even though I fully appreciate their reasons. However, I do think it’s still really important for as many people as possible to visit and show our support. The FIT Show represents the very best of this industry and gives so much back that I think it matters more than ever this time around that it is a success.

Ian Short Managing Director, Morley Glass & Glazing We are looking to make a big impression with a 110m2 exhibition stand; that’s three times the amount of space than in 2019. The extra-large stand (F25) will have access from all sides to allow for social distancing, and to provide sufficient space to showcase our two new products alongside our existing range of integral blinds. New for 2021 is the SV+. It is a completely symmetrical version of the highly popular ScreenLine SV (sliding venetian) UniBlind system, thanks to the addition of a slim dummy rail on the opposite side to the sliding operating system. We have also launched a blackout system for pleated integral blinds. With no vertical cords running down the blind, no light can leak through tiny gaps when in the closed position, and there are no perimeter gaps either. We are looking forward to an outstanding show where we can see people face-toface, they can physically touch and operate the blinds and feel their quality – and have much more personal, in-depth conversations.

Dave Thomas Managing Director, Haffner

Rhys Hoddinott Director, Leka Systems

As a company who has exhibited at every FIT Show since the first one in 2013, we know the benefits the show delivers. And we’re celebrating its return by having the largest stand in the show’s history!

The Leka team is looking forward to getting together in person with the industry at the FIT Show!

Our 405 sqm space will give us the ability to showcase our range of cutting-edge PVC-U and aluminium fabrication machinery, including those from our exclusive partnership with Graf Synergy. The brand is well-known for its world class seamless welding technology and patented welding techniques that increase fabrication efficiencies and deliver superior product quality. We’ll also be demonstrating machines from Haffner, which designs innovative and high-quality engineered products at competitive industry prices, and worldwide machine giants, Fom Industries who raise the bar in automated machine technology. We’re looking forward to being able to demonstrate our machines in person and showing the benefits they can bring to fabricators’ businesses. But perhaps most important of all, we’re looking forward to meeting friends old and new and celebrating the strength and resilience of our industry after a difficult year for everyone.

Dan Sullivan MD, DOORCO

We’re expecting our stand to be very busy because homeowner interest in the benefits of solid roofs shows no sign of slowing down. And our Leka range delivers everything they are looking for – and more. Our Leka Solid Roof and Orangery Roof revolutionised the market with their lightweight GRP construction and continue to deliver outstanding thermal efficiency. The products add real value to both fabricators and installers’ businesses and we look forward to showcasing them at the show. Similarly, our Leka xi Modular Conservatory system is suitable for both extensions and stand-alone buildings and tap into the trend for thermally efficient home or garden rooms. The Leka benefits all add up to a compelling offer that has helped fabricators increase their revenue streams by up to 15% in the first year.

We’re excited about the return of FIT Show for two reasons: firstly, DOORCO is exhibiting for the first time since 2016 and secondly, because the timing of the event is perfect: as the only dedicated exhibition for the industry, visitors will be even more hungry to link up with the supply chain and see the latest innovations – something which DOORCO has in abundance this year. We’re looking forward to connecting with customers, prospects and the industry as a whole both from a business perspective, but also socially and our plans for the show reflect this. DOORCO has been busy over the last year or so. We have two new products to showcase – our new solid core composite door that’s been engineered with GRiPCORE technology, and FLiP, our brand-new cassette system which has been developed in-house and made in the UK. There are more innovations being revealed at the show too. I don’t want to give too much away yet - you’ll have to visit us on stand F5 to see for yourself!

We’re looking forward to discussing the opportunities with visitors to our stand – and to celebrating the first big event back!

VOICE OF THE INDUSTRY

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

Angus Mackie Group managing director, Allumette Ltd Allumette is a group of companies that specialise in metal finishing and non-powered ventilation systems. We partner with world leading aluminium system houses and the wider façade sector across the UK. The FIT Show provides an ideal opportunity to engage with the whole industry spectrum. In these uncertain times, we are fortunate to be backed by one of the UK’s largest investors. Over the last three years they have facilitated the group investing nearly £3 million, with an additional ambitious £2 million plan for further investment to sustain its position as a market leading enterprise. With our tremendous level of investment over the coming months the FIT Show gives us a platform to share some very exciting plans. FIT Show is a key event in the fenestration calendar and as Allumette operates exclusively in the built environment sector we are looking forward to meeting the individuals that matter.

Tracey Jackson Business Development Manager, Howells Patent Glazing We are not exhibiting this year but will be attending. We hope to return once again as an exhibitor in 2023 when we will showcase our new product lines; some are due to launch later this year. The FIT show is a great way to see what is going on in the industry, both the new developments as well as catching up with familiar faces and suppliers. The panels are a good opportunity to explore the issues the sector is facing and learn how we are dealing with these, especially the skills shortage and how to entice new faces, making fenestration a viable career option. It will be interesting to see how the public reacts to the reopening of exhibitions, and its impact on footfall. The current market seems to be buoyant, will the show mirror this? The return of FIT will hopefully mark a fresh start for the industry after the restrictions of the past year. It will certainly be worth a visit!

The biggest bonus is being able to thank our loyal customers face to face for all their support through these most uncertain times. After 18 months of life on Zoom this feels long overdue.

www.glassnews.co.uk | July 2021

John Park-Davies Managing Director, IKON & Vertik-Al

Alan Calverley Director, Department of Marketing

We are all living in the most exciting and interesting times. Inperson events and exhibitions are an opportunity for us to meet, speak and celebrate our industry, our strength, and our resourcefulness.

We will be attending the FIT Show in support of several clients. The timing of the show should be spot on…dare I say it! I am hopeful, if all goes to plan in July, there will be renewed confidence in public events by the end of September. I think many people are excited at the prospect of meeting familiar faces in person again, rather than on screen. Talking to clients, friends, former colleagues and peers, it certainly feels like there’s a sense of anticipation.

We had to adapt to Zoom calls, Microsoft Teams meetings and virtual webinars and conferences, the FIT show is a return to being able to get together, check into a hotel, meet people for coffee and then revel amongst likeminded crowds. At IKON and Vertik-Al we are creating a collaborative exhibition space that will be colourful, interesting, and fun. The last year or so has been tiresome and getting back to something we all appreciate will be joyful. For an industry that thrives on relationships, FIT show will enable us to network with old friends and make some new ones along the way. It is the perfect place to promote your products and services and showcase what we do best, alongside valuable learning opportunities and real-life experiences – something we have all missed!

In my opinion, the fenestration industry is built on personalities and while we may be living in a changed world, this sector thrives on events such as FIT Show. It will be an unmissable opportunity for many. Social and business conversations will be long overdue and new products and services should be in abundance. Yes, everyone is busy which is fantastic, but FIT Show really will mark the start of a new era and we should embrace that…if not one another!

Jon Palethorpe Joint Managing Director, A Plus Aluminium I think there will be a distinctly different feel to this year’s FIT Show. I don’t just mean because of the pandemic and any restrictions that may still be in place, but it will, for many of us, be our first opportunity in almost two years to catch-up face-to-face. Traditionally, we are an extremely sociable industry, a close-knit community of recognisable faces and personalities. The show will enable us to recapture some of that ‘normality’. This year, I will be taking time out of the business to visit the show and meet with customers and suppliers. We have been incredibly busy throughout the pandemic and are on-track for a record year. We have also evolved significantly as a business since the last FIT Show, with new products and additional capacity, and I am excited to share these developments with peers and prospects. also curious to see how FIT show has evolved since its previous outing. The aluminium market is experiencing significant growth so it will be interesting to see how this will translate in the show.

Mike Bygrave Director, Roseview Windows We’re excited about the show; it’s the first opportunity for two years to get together as an industry. It’s the ideal environment to see how we’ve all progressed, discover new products and innovations, and - most of all - talk to people faceto-face. That’s really what the FIT Show is all about for us; meeting up with friends and customers. It’s a chance to catch up, see how everyone is and - of course - reveal what we’ve been doing. This year we’ll be doing things slightly differently. Rather than launching a new product, we have some exciting developments and collaborations to show off. Plus, we’ll have our new brand ambassador and industry figure Leon Day with us. I’m sure plenty of people will want to come and say hello to Leon! I’m terrible at keeping exciting news quiet, but I really can’t reveal any more. You’ll have to come to the Roseview stand to see for yourself. See you there!

VOICE OF THE INDUSTRY

Rhonda Ridge, Managing Director, Ab Initio Systems Ltd/ AdminBase This will be the first time at FIT Show for AdminBase and we are very excited and can’t wait for this year’s event! One of the factors in the significant number of new installers that have joined us in the past year or so, has been the ability of AdminBase to allow installers and their teams to run their businesses remotely. This has allowed businesses to carry on despite the restrictions. So, to be at FIT Show to actually meet so many of them is very important to us. Of course, we will be bringing new products and add-ons to FIT, including brand new apps to add to the on-site connected apps that we introduced so successfully in 2019. We will also show off the enhancements to the apps already on offer for sales, surveying, fitting and remedials that are now in wide use. Although a key element of AdminBase is the ability to run things remotely, there is no substitute for meeting people face-to-face. And just a few weeks to go now!

Mark Bromley CEO, Avantis Hardware Firstly, as an exhibitor we will be ensuring that the safety and welfare of everyone associated with the business including all visitors will be looked after. If the last 15 months have told us anything, is that our collective wellbeing is paramount. For the show we’re looking to further cement our position as the smartsensor partner of choice for the industry with daily activations of Kubu enabled doors for 18 months now. From a new product perspective, we’ll be launching our window sensor which will be available to order just after the show and with it moving us into the smart home market. There will also be important updates to our software and firmware platforms that have been developed in house by our expert team of product engineers. There will also be new marketing materials, demo rigs and we can point potential Kubu Pro Installers to a number of well-respected and influential manufacturing partners, with the list growing by the week. There will also be other strategic announcements at the show.

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

Robert Thiroff Managing Director, profine UK (KÖMMERLING) The FIT Show is an important part of our marketing programme for 2021, though we will be mindful about the welfare of all visitors to the stand including staff. Ultimately it will be an opportunity to meet the industry at large and for us to showcase everything that we offer from profine and KÖMMERLING as a global powerhouse, when it comes to PVCu window and door systems. Under the campaign #TechnicallyBetter, we will be presenting windows and doors in our 70mm and 76mm platforms, including a new 6-chamber flush sash that can readily achieve a U-value of 1.2 W/(m2K). The unrivalled, PAS 24 PremiLine Pro will also be on show, alongside our vertical sliding sash window and the WarmCore platform. With changes to Building Regulations due to be announced later this year, the FIT Show will prove a wonderful platform for us to show the technical excellence across the KÖMMERLING range. There will also be new literature and other product innovations including the Passivhaus certified 88mm platform in both white and new foiled options, thanks to proStratoTec technology.

Simon Scholes Managing Director, VEKA Recycling

Christina Shaw Managing Director, Glass People Ltd

Giovanni Laporta Inventor & Innovator, Smart Ready®

At the beginning of 2021 we formally opened our new recycling plant at Wellingborough, the newest and most advanced facility of its type in Europe. It took us two years of hard graft and, whilst we can’t bring the factory with us we can certainly bring the spirit along to explain to visitors and especially installers, just what happens to the old PVC-U frames that they remove, if they are processed by VEKA Recycling.

The main focus for the team at Glass News is meeting people in person and communicating face to face. It is said time and again how sociable our industry is, and without doubt, The FIT Show is the first opportunity for everyone to do just that: socialise, get together, enjoy each other’s company.

Smart Ready® will celebrate our return to FIT by bringing some of the greatest innovation the industry has ever seen. In the two years since FIT 2019, with all that has happened during the period, it’s no surprise that both the industry and consumers have seen significant change. Fortunately, the companies and team behind Smart Ready® have spent the time investing in and developing solutions that are a perfect fit for these changing supply chain needs – and perfect to unveil at FIT later this year.

Of course, before we are able to process the frames we have to receive them and we will be discussing with installers why insisting on VEKA Recycling processing their old frames, offers the most responsible way of dealing with them on behalf of their customers. Sustainability is high on the list of homeowner demands these days and demonstrating to them that their old frames can become new ones within weeks of being removed, is a superb customer service to them.

We have taken our biggest stand to date, ensuring visitors can socially distance, whilst enjoying our hospitality. As for most, it’s been a rollercoaster kind of year! However, our team have exuded positivity and launched two new publications during lockdown. A Window Into Aluminium in association with CAB is our monthly aluminium newsletter and Improve Magazine is a title which targets the homeowner, specifically on behalf of the window industry. Both new products are showcasing at FIT. Glass News however will be our main focus, as it is through this title we have helped support our customers during the pandemic, as they have supported us, working together and retaining strong relationships throughout.

The FIT Show has always provided a focal point where the industry comes together in huge numbers, something we need this year more than ever. It’s great to see Nikkie and the FIT Team catering for the self-employed installers too, by opening on a Sunday. I’ve said it before, but this hugely important group of businesspeople are so often overlooked. Personally, I am very much looking forward to sharing the innovations that Smart Ready® and our partnering companies have worked on, and it will be great to reconnect with everyone again in person . Prepare to be impressed. Very impressed.

GLASS NEWS INTERVIEW: STERNFENSTER

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST We catch up with Sternfenster’s MD, Mike Parczuk, who explains more about new initiatives that have been introduced to improve the mental health and wellbeing of staff, as part a vision to achieve Investors in People Gold status.

Can you tell us more about your commitment to Investors In People? Mike Parczuk: It might come across as cliched to say that our people are the most important asset we have at Sternfenster, but it’s true. We have an outstanding workforce, I’ve learnt that they work very well as a team and I’m especially proud of their performance over the last 12 months or so, given the conditions that we have experienced. It’s meant that we have been able to overcome some big challenges, their efforts have served to demonstrate that we are very robust as an organisation. But I’ve also realised that we could be doing a lot more for our staff, in order that they are properly recognised for the contribution they make to the company and to give them more of an opportunity to develop within the business. By committing to the Investors In People accreditation scheme we are able to put the processes in place to do just that.

A company survey is an integral part of the Investors In People accreditation process – how did Sternfenster perform? Mike Parczuk: Everyone in the company was asked to contribute to the survey, including everyone on the factory floor, to our sales teams, accounts department and delivery teams. The feedback was really encouraging. The results showed that a very high proportion of our employees feel that we have clear values; 90% feel that they are trusted to make decisions in line with their role and 91% said that their role enables them to work well with others. We were upgraded from Bronze to Silver Investors In People status, which shows that we have the right principles in place and that we are actively encouraging them to be applied throughout the company. It’s a good result, we scored higher than the industry standard for manufacturers across a range of criteria. But there’s clearly room for improvement. Our company vision is to achieve Gold Investors in People Status and that means we need to do more to consistently recognise the efforts of our staff. The levels of stress that we have operated under for the last 12 months or so, have also highlighted that we should be doing more to protect their mental health. I don’t need to remind anyone of the demands that have been placed on the industry but it’s sometimes easy to forget that Covid restrictions outside of work have added to that pressure. It’s our responsibility to do everything we can to help our staff manage all that, to safeguard their wellbeing. We now

50

Mike Parczuk

have a number of new initiatives in place that are designed to do just that.

Can you tell us more about these? Mike Parczuk: All Sternfenster employees can now access Perkbox, which is an online platform that gives them access to exclusive offers and discounts at shops and restaurants, but it also allows them to acknowledge the achievements of other team members. That can be something as simple as a special occasion, a work anniversary or birthday but it also creates the opportunity for individuals to be recognised for doing a great job. The Perkbox site also includes a Culture Hub, with links to company newsletters, as well as a new Employee Assistance Program. This includes a free, confidential helpline with round the clock access to trained counsellors and support specialists, guaranteed access to private, 24-hour GP services, plus financial and legal assistance and a range of other services that offer dedicated support for stress, and anxiety.

Do you think the industry could be doing more to address mental health? Mike Parczuk: Absolutely. The industry often concentrates on day-to-day topics that are affecting business, we hear a lot about material supply and price increases – but it’s easy to forget about the impact of mental health issues. According to the government’s Health and Safety Executive, 828,000 people suffered from work related stress in 2020. Sternfenster is a family company, with family values and we’ve always prioritised our staff, but through Investors In People, we can do more to make sure they are recognised and rewarded for the contribution they make to the company. A big part of that is to make sure they are as healthy and happy as possible. It’s a positive step forward to improving our productivity but it will also translate to a much better service for our customers as well. ALUMINIUM

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

100% RECYCLABLE ALUMINIUM? A lot has been claimed about the benefits of aluminium by CAB and many other associations, but we should also ask: “Where would we be today without this material?”

screws, gaskets and hardware can now be easily be removed from post consumer scrap in automated processes, leaving the aluminium in chipped form ready to melt back into billet production with no loss of quality. One of the key facts to aluminium recyclability is that it takes just 5% energy to recycle aluminium compared to the energy needed to extract new aluminium from the earths crust.

scheme we require that extrusion grades of aluminium, namely 6000 series alloys for the architectural aluminium market, are recycled back into the same 6000 series alloys. The same can be said for sheet aluminium recycling, namely with 1000 series alloys. It is important to reiterate that in a ‘closed loop’, an aluminium alloy can be recycled infinitely without loss of its specific characteristics.

With a high strength to weight ratio, aluminium is a structural engineering material, without it we would not have the modern airliners of today, or indeed much in the way of space flight. On the ground, more of our vehicles are now being made from aluminium, as less weight means less energy used in propulsion and potentially longer lasting vehicles. In fact, there are so many uses of the material across our modern life, it is difficult to imagine life without it!

Following oxygen and silicon, aluminium is the third most abundant element in the Earth’s crust. Often close to the Earth surface in the form of bauxite, from which alumina is extracted, is easy to source in open cast mines which can quickly be relandscaped often with the fauna which was initially removed. Aluminium production also continues to become more efficient reducing its embodied carbon with prime (newly mined) ’low-carbon’ billet equating to just 4.00 tCO2e (shorthand for carbon dioxide equivalents). In comparison, the average production of one ton of aluminium primary aluminium has an emission of 16.7 tCO2e. When added with 75% post consumer scrap, as a typical example, the carbon dioxide equivalent is lowered still further to just 2.3 tCO2e. With continuing steps being made in the use of more renewable energy sources to produce aluminium such as hydro electricity and now with the promise of the use of hydrogen in the future, the embodiment of carbon in prime aluminium will continue to fall.

Pre-consumer scrap can easily be recycled before it leaves the factory as it is often ‘clean’ and of a known alloy, post-consumer scrap on the other hand, is where the challenge lies. With the many thousands of tonnes of alloy extrusion and sheet used in our buildings across the UK, we now look towards the advantages of deconstruction, separation and recycling, and the ability to see view our built landscape as an ‘urban mine’ for future raw materials. As already stated, we have recycled aluminium over many decades, primarily as it has a high recycle value, but without a ‘closed loop’ we can ‘lose’ the specific grades we require to recycle the aluminium back into the same product type. If we can constrain recycling to specific alloy grades, we can recycle extrusions back into new extrusions and offer a true circular economy for our aluminium products in the UK construction industry.

So how does all this translate to aluminium products used in construction? The most obvious is in fenestration, windows, doors, curtain wall and atria roofing. But aluminium is also extensively used today in external cladding of buildings including roofing solutions such as standing seam designs. Despite some recent disastrous building fires where aluminium has been used, aluminium remains completely nonflammable. Why is it specified so widely? Together with its unique engineering characteristics, aluminium can last the lifetime of a building, or more to the point today, last the lifetime of a building envelope as we look to repurpose and re-clad existing building structures. After the aluminium ‘in-use’ phase, it can easily be removed, recycled and replaced. Aluminium also needs no other supporting material to achieve impressive spans and comes in a wide range of alloy types to suit many applications. With the further advancement of architectural aluminium finishes, now in an unlimited range of powder coatings colours in several exposure classes and the incredibly resilient anodising finishes, we now measure the life expectancy of building envelopes using aluminium in decades, not years. In fact, 75% of all aluminium in use today, since the material was first commercially produced in the 1880’s, is still in use today. The growing demand for the material means that there is not enough scrap available to meet the growing market sectors across construction, transport and packaging. Today we can only meet a third of the demand by recycling and, as a result, the monetary value of scrap aluminium remains high. So is aluminium 100% recyclable? In practice, yes, and most importantly, many times over with no loss of structural integrity. The thermal breaks, stainless steel

52

Today, the challenge in recycling aluminium is to keep the post consumer scrap separated into alloy grades, fortunately there are only a few grades used in construction and with the help of a spectrometer these can easily be identified prior to the disassembly of post consumer products. With these recycled material grades, virtually 100% recycling is achievable with no prime aluminium needed to produce new billet. So should we specify recycled aluminium only? Well no, as there is not enough to go around! A project containing 100% recycled aluminium will only mean more prime aluminium being used in another. As aluminium has a high scrap value, the majority re-enters the supply chain in this ‘closed loop’ scenario. The Council for Aluminium in building has pioneered its own ‘Closed Loop Recycling’ scheme in the UK dedicated to the aluminium construction market. The scheme expects its members collect and recycle preconsumer and post consumer scrap in the UK through the scheme members creating a ‘closed loop’ or a ‘cradle to cradle’ cycle which continues to reduce carbon embodiment keeping the material ‘in-use’ in the UK rather than losing this overseas. The aim of the initiative is to encourage the recycling of aluminium alloys within the same alloy grades. For the CAB

Key to this capability is the advent of the handheld spectrometer for identifying the content of an aluminium alloy. Easily portable and very quick to use, grades can easily be checked prior to recycling. This means that the aluminium grades could easily be checked and identified on a building site prior to deconstruction. The quantity available on a given site can also be relatively easily calculated before removal, as aluminium extrusions and sheets are usually uniform in shape and easily measured. Skips for the scrap, clearly labelled for the identified grades being removed, can be obtained from recyclers to be placed on site for collection of this valuable post-consumer scrap. The second challenge is to remove non-aluminium components from the aluminium frames of windows and curtain walling, such as hinges, handles, gaskets, screws and weather seals. Done manually, this could take some time, and we must also consider the removal of thermal breaks made of materials such as polyamide and polyurethane. Fortunately, the technology has advanced considerably, and this process is completely automated. What is supplied back to the smelter is ‘chipped’ aluminium, with minimal contaminants such as paint and thermal breaks which are mostly removed in the process.

currently voluntary, government legislation could be introduced on ‘embodied carbon’ content in the future and main contractors are increasingly seeking evidence to demonstrate the sustainability credentials of their supply chain. Aluminium scrap is an important resource and we should maximise the quantity and quality of recovered aluminium scrap in the UK to build the circular economy of the future. CAB encourages anyone working and supplying products within the construction aluminium supply chain to join CAB and ‘join the discussion’. Together we can shape the industry and portray the facts of this amazing material! CAB and staff are on hand at the offices to answer any aluminium fenestration related questions. INDUSTRY AWARDS

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

DOUBLE WIN FOR LINIAR AT QUANEX ANNUAL AWARDS Liniar is delighted to announce it’s been awarded wins in two categories in this year’s annual Quanex Safety & Stakeholder Awards! Initially nominated in four categories (Safety, Hometown Award, Engagement and the President’s Stakeholder Award), Liniar was proud to discover the UK PVCu systems company had won both the Safety Recognition and Hometown Award. Liniar’s parent company Quanex Building Products has developed the new annual Awards as a way of recognising the efforts of the all plants and team members around the world that contribute to the success of the Group. The award ceremony was originally intended to be held at Quanex’ Houston, Texas HQ, but the pandemic halted travel plans – so the Leadership team produced a video to announce the nominees and

HOMETOWN AWARD

The Quanex Safety Award was bestowed upon the Liniar and Avantek teams located at its Cotes Park facility. The teams received a plaque to commemorate the hard work that had been done to ensure the site had achieved an entire year with no recordable incidents.

The Hometown Award was presented to the Quanex plant that the Communities Committee felt had done the most for its local community during 2020. Liniar had not only produced and donated thousands of protective visors to key workers during the pandemic, it had managed to increase its usual focus on community activities in 2020, including fundraising for local charities and collecting items for food banks and toys for underprivileged children.

George Wilson, Quanex CEO and President said, “As everyone knows, safety is the Number One operational priority of everything we do at Quanex. Completing a full year without a single reportable incident – especially during one of the busiest years on record – is a truly amazing

Martin Thurley, Liniar’s Group Managing Director commented, “We’ve always had a strong focus on our local community –

and the pandemic made it more important than ever to help those less fortunate than ourselves. We’re delighted to receive this award, and to share the good news with our team by way of a meal celebration, which we’re now arranging.” The prize also came with a £1,000 donation from Quanex to a charity of Liniar’s choice – and the deserving recipient was chosen by Ollie Marriott, a Design apprentice who had been instrumental in the creation and testing of the Liniar protective visors. Ollie chose Treetops Hospice, a local charity providing nursing care and emotional support for adults and their families. Quanex Senior Vice President – General Counsel & Secretary Paul Cornett awarded the prize, declaring: “Congratulations on winning the Quanex Hometown Award for 2020. We had some great nominees this year, but Liniar’s commitment to the community in 2020 was unmatched – and this award was very well-deserved.” Discover more about Liniar’s community focus at www.liniar.co.uk/about/csr/.

COLOUR

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

ALUK LAUNCHES NEW COLOUR COLLECTION AluK is transforming its colour offering with the launch of a brand-new colour collection which it says will help trade customers win more business with stronger, more sustainable margins. Working with paint supplier Akzo Nobel, AluK has identified the key trends dominating the retail and commercial markets at the moment and put together four distinct, highly durable colour ranges in response. Branded Elements, Homestead, Spectrum and Urbane, they are available on all of AluK’s products on competitively short lead times and are designed to give customers a huge advantage when it comes to their own sales and logistics operations. Elements and Homestead are AluK’s powder coated colour ranges for the retail market. Elements features 17 vibrant RAL options in a smooth finish, while Homestead includes 13 classic, warm RAL options in a textured finish. For the commercial market, AluK’s Spectrum and Urbane ranges combine additional durability with enhanced variations in finish to suit both volume and high-end specifications. There are 21 contemporary textured metallic colours within Spectrum, while Urbane features 14 bolder

colours in a smooth anodic metal finish which offers a simple and cost-effective alternative to anodising. All four ranges have been brought together in a stunning new sales brochure printed with fully colour matched samples so that buyers can see realistic representations of the colours before they place an order. Sioned Roberts, AluK’s Marketing Director, says that AluK is determined to make the whole process of winning and supplying contracts in coloured profile easier and more profitable for fabricators. She explains: “We’ve simplified the whole process so that all Elements, Homestead and Spectrum single colour options are priced the same, with an uplift only for dual colours and those from the higher specification Urbane range. We’re still offering our standard gloss white, matt 7016 grey and matt 9005 black options from stock, but we’re now also offering competitive lead times on textured versions of those and all the paint-to-order colours in this entire collection. “Up until now, our customers seem to have fallen largely into two groups – those who just offer our three standard colours and who are potentially missing out on new business opportunities as a result, and those who try to offer every RAL colour but say that the logistics of that can be costly and complicated “This new colour collection is aimed squarely at both and is a very deliberate response from AluK to help all our customers use colour as a way to increase margins. It maintains the

easy ordering and guaranteed lead times associated with standard products but streamlines the choice of RAL colours and textures to just the most popular options, drastically simplifying the logistics.” She adds: “There is a misconception in the market that colour in aluminium just means Anthracite grey, when in fact that only accounts for a proportion of sales driven by what has been most popular over recent years. Other colours are increasingly coming to the fore as market demand shifts, and AluK has plenty of alternative grey and black options in the new collection as well as on-trend shades of brown, blue, green and cream. “As you’d expect, Elements and Homestead are very much in line with the paint colours made popular by certain high-end paint manufacturers, while Spectrum and Urbane reflect the colours, textures and finishes dominating the commercial market at the moment.” AluK’s new colour collection is available on a competitive lead time but all the other RAL colours remain available to order separately. DOUBLE YOUR PROFITS WITH KOLORSEAL The days are gone when people wanted just white or cream windows and today many homeowners want to add a really personal touch to their homes using colour. This can be a huge financial advantage for installers and fabricators looking at offering more benefits to consumers. For shrewd installers this could also bring viable profits their way, as there are ways to use coloured frames, doors and roofline on any project to help to greatly increase their income. The real beauty is that it can be achieved without having to make expensive additional costs. Rather than filling a delivery van with only white UPVC products, installers can slot regular, full coloured loads into their delivery runs and achieve double the price for the same amount of white products. By reaching out to consumers, who are aware that colour can enhance their property and add real value, this option will also help to expand an installer’s business through referral and testimonials. Likewise, for commercial contracts where architects and specifiers aim to create a striking appearance to modern buildings, the Kolorseal colour palettes offer a vast choice of options in both UPVC and aluminium products.

60

For many listed or traditional style projects, colour can be an integral part of the local planning requirement when fitting new windows, doors and fascia. Being able to offer a good but alternative colour choice, that will blend to meet stipulations, will provide end users with reassurance that they can have all they are looking for in a renovation project. Delivery times are fast and guaranteed, with orders being delivered either to site or factory with just a 5 day lead time. The Kolorseal team guarantees that all windows, doors, composites and aluminium products

are finished in a top-quality and longlasting colour. For fabricators, installers or architects, the company promises to provide quotes within 24 hours of contact, to ensure a customer’s schedule can be met. In addition to helping improve profit margins, Kolorseal also can help to improve storage areas, as valuable factory space can be used for other things rather than stocking a vast number of coloured foils. The Kolorseal modern paint technology bonds the paint to the surface of the

products to be coloured, which, with a 10 year guarantee, provides stunning results. Moreover with homeowners more aware now than ever before about exterior and interior design, they gain reassurance that their new products won’t fade or peel. In our experience, homeowners can see the merits of alternative colours and as such will look to achieve an improved look on their renovation projects. Do visit the Kolorseal website to discuss trends and alternative colours. EXPERT COMMENT

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

SEAMLESS PROFITS Jim Moody, Managing Director of leading fabricator Tradelink Direct, talks to Glass News about the snowballing trend for high-end products and what this means for manufacturers and installers and the allimportant bottom line. Who would have thought 15 months ago that the window, door, and conservatory sectors would be booming in the way that they are today? The success of the industry coming out of the pandemic has been well documented, but what hasn’t been talked about quite as much are the products that are bucking the trend. Consumers aren’t just choosing any home improvement products, they’re opting for high-end, added value items. Timber alternatives are among the star performers. The increased demand for timber style windows is likely in part to be thanks to the innovations that have been made in this field in recent years. It takes time to win over the hearts and minds of the public and our collective efforts to prove the value of PVC-U alternatives to timber are now coming to fruition. There is also a clear trend for country style living. Many of us are leaving city life to move to the countryside for the ultimate rural experience, but many more of us are recreating an authentic country look by updating and improving our existing

homes. We want traditional looking windows in the typical countryside colour palette.

OUTSTANDING OPPORTUNITIES The trend for high-end products may seem like outright good news for the industry, and it is certainly an opportunity to grow turnover without adding a lot more projects to the books. But delivering to this market requires careful consideration. These products must consistently be of outstanding quality. If you think about the kind of consumer that buys high value windows and doors, they expect the best. There is no room for error. For installers to deliver to this demographic and maximise on the opportunities ahead, they need to work with fabricators that understand the intricacies of the market. Flush casement windows are a good example of a high-end option in high

demand in 2021. A recent study highlighted in the trade press shows that 62% of the consumers interviewed would choose flush over standard casements. However, different fabricators offer different solutions, which could impact on profitability.

UNDERSTANDING THE CHALLENGES Certain installers selling PVC-U flush casement windows are fitting the traditional mechanically jointed version, but it’s a version that comes with a unique set of challenges. Mechanical joints typically offer only 60% of the strength of a welded corner. One of the ways to increase the integrity of a mechanically jointed window, is to glass bond the unit to the frame. Whilst this addresses the issue of structural strength mid-term, glass bonding creates an immediate challenge for installers who have to handle these extremely heavy products on site, often over two floors. There are long-term concerns too, in the latent liability of a sealed unit breaking down. Simply removing beads and exchanging the glass unit for a new one, is not an option when the unit is bonded to the frame.

A BETTER WAY While a lot of manufacturers make mechanically jointed flush casements and the product continues to be popular, the forward thinking among us have worked hard to deliver a better solution. Seamless welded flush casement windows offer superior corner weld strength, which immediately negates the need for factory glass bonding and therefore the need to replace the entire window should the unit fail. The advanced milling and seamless welding techniques result in 100% square frames and sashes and perfectly fitting mechanical transoms and mullions. The aesthetics alone offer an outstanding sales

62

proposition for installers selling to the discerning homeowner. The seamless alternative comes with its own set of challenges in manufacture which is why it is not as commonplace as its mechanical counterpart. It requires significant investment in the right people, equipment, and quality control checks. However, once made, it is a much easier option for the installer to handle and potentially a much more profitable one too.

INSTALLERS PREFER SEAMLESS Tradelink has taken its responsibility to meet demand in this sector on behalf of its installers, very seriously from the beginning. In 2017 we introduced a flush casement window and door suite into our existing range and in 2018 we committed to the delivery of this suite with a new and dedicated manufacturing plant. In 2019 we once again invested significantly by adding a seamless welding machine to our operation. We now offer a complete range of seamless products with our Rehau Ri0s and our Residence R7s, R9s and R2s window systems as well as our Flush Door range RDs. We offer all our customers the option of mechanically jointed and seamless, but we are honest about the pros and cons of each. When presented with the facts, most are opting for the seamless option. To put that in real terms, analysing our order intake in recent months, there is an 98.1% preference for our seamless products over mechanical. Consumers want first class windows with no compromise and are prepared to pay for them. To make the most of this opportunity, installers need to work with a fabricator that truly understands the sector and has made the necessary investment to deliver precisely the products it needs. FIT Show event organisers have announced that over 40% of its exhibiting brands will be making their FIT Show debuts. Brands including Rockdoor, Exlabesa, Solar

Calibre, STORM Building Products, UK Doors Online and Adminbase are all set to premiere at FIT Show. Visitor pre registration figures continue to track at over 100% above the figures for the same period in the campaign for its 2019 event, reinforcing the industry’s unwavering appetite for its flagship trade show. The report follows the UK Government's announcement that the final stage of the easing of lockdown restrictions is to be delayed from June 21st to July 19th, at which point all restrictions on social distancing, travel and mass gatherings are anticipated to be lifted. When FIT Show returns to the NEC (September 26 - 28, 2021), visitors can expect a lineup of over 200 exhibitors from across the home improvement industry. The industry will come together to see the very latest products on the market for the first time since 2019. Natasha Erskine, UK Doors Online marketing director comments: “As a new start up, we think exhibiting at FIT Show is the perfect opportunity to showcase our business and let the trade know about the services we can offer. “Industry exhibitions provide a unique opportunity to reach the whole market, and even though we are still newbies we couldn’t pass on the chance to really get our name out there and show how good we are at FIT.” Bruce Mitchell, STORM Building Products MD added: “The FIT Show is a fantastic opportunity to connect with the best in the industry and STORM will be launching our exclusive mineral-based decking, DECKORATORS®, along with our new canopy system. “As the FIT Show is the only dedicated event in the UK for our industry, STORM will be there to showcase the outdoor living products and solutions we offer to support your projects.” FIT Show event director Nickie West commented: “We’re excited by the breadth of brands that make our stellar FIT Show lineup. The fact that over 40% of the brands that are due to exhibit will be making their FIT Show debut is a major pull for visitors. “And visitor appetite for FIT Show remains strong with an unprecedented level of early registrations. We’re all looking ahead to September as a crucial marker in the industry’s roadmap as we strive to get back to face-toface business and reconnect with the market. “FIT Show will present the first opportunity for the market to see, touch and compare the latest products side-by-side since 2019. I’m excited to welcome our new and returning brands, and our visitors, when we open the doors to FIT Show 2021.” FIT Show is the UK’s number one, award-winning showcase for the glass, glazing, window, door, hardware and components industry. FIT Show will return to the NEC 26 - 28 September 2021.

COLD CALLING

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

DANNY WILLIAMS

‘COLD CALLING’

Each month our special correspondent Danny Williams* replies to a reader’s letter...

“When I shut my premises up at the end of March last year I wondered if they would ever open again, let alone face the crazy boom we are going through currently. There doesn’t seem to be any sight of it finishing but I can’t help worrying that we will go from boom, to bust just as quickly. What is your take Danny?” JG Installer, Lancashire Our industry is still run by entrepreneurs, seat of the pants merchants who, like me, have managed to carve out a half and even fully decent living despite having a poor education (mostly because I was out there trying to turn a coin into something bigger, even as a kid) and no formal business qualifications. I am good with my hands, can whip the motor out of an 18 tonner, fix it and put it back in, then drive the forklift and deliver a load of frames in said 18 tonner. I have been in business for 35 years, employ 70 people, manufacture a range of windows and doors in aluminium and PVC-U and have contracts to manufacture and replace windows in a number of NHS estates as well as other commercial sites, including CrossRail. I deal with a number of suppliers that are run by professional managers, one or two of whom have MBAs and accountancy qualifications and a long and successful record of running companies successfully, and even managing to keep people like me generally happy, no mean feat. The one key thing that links us all, is that we cannot, possibly forecast what will happen in 18 months’ time, despite all of our collective abilities and experiences. In my 35 years at the coalface, I have never seen anything like what we are going through as an industry JG, not in terms of sales, but especially in the conditions that, despite us and our installer customers having bursting order books, at

almost discount-free prices, we are tearing our (in my case, largely imaginary) hair out. I called to find out a little more about you JG and you told me that, despite buying from your main frame supplier, now a personal friend, for more than 25 years, paying on the dot throughout, he is rationing you to 25 frames a week; and despite the system he supplies being one of the larger and more established brands in the industry. You balance this against employing three teams of fitters, who you are determined to hang on to because if you lay them off, you will struggle to replace them as finding even half decent people is damned near impossible. Fortunately, you said, sliding and bi-folding door installs keep them profitably occupied, plus a bit of roofline and the odd connie. You are, therefore, making money. As am I. I happen to have the best team of people around me to manage the business that I have ever had, but the aggravation of pulling this all together tests my patience. Which is not known to be overflowing. And which is especially tried by the somewhat less than ethical tactics of the cowboy employment agencies that are doing their best to nick my staff. That is me, Danny, who began life by selling ‘u-PVC’ windows, in the ‘Eighties, in Essex, calling these people cowboys. I know one when I see one. So, what can I say with any certainty? Well, I believe that materials and component shortages will be with us for some time yet, although there are signs that some lines are improving. In the UK we are ahead of most of the world in our recovery from the pandemic; but when the rest of the planet recovers, other markets will experience a surge in demand just like ours. I am concerned that as huge countries like India and Brazil get their act together and start manufacturing again, our already fragile supply chains will be plunged into deeper chaos. High prices will be with us now for as far as we can see into the future; in fact this is the status quo and we should settle down and not kid ourselves that it will all blow over, because it won’t. Even when supply and demand return to some sort of balance, prices will not return to pre-covid levels. Against the supply issues, sales will continue to surge, even into next year when surely, we will be allowed out and about

“In the UK we are ahead of most of the world in our recovery from the pandemic; but when the rest of the planet recovers, other markets will experience a surge in demand just like ours. I am concerned that as huge countries like India and Brazil get their act together and start manufacturing again, our already fragile supply chains will be plunged into deeper chaos.” to gallivant in foreign lands, educating Johnny Foreigner in the ways of the world, including the best of British etiquette including how to wear vests and show off our tats to best advantage. Having had a couple of years developing the battlements of our splendid castles we will continue to add the modern equivalent of new drawbridges and moats, whilst also finding the cash to go and annoy Miguel and Winston. With our industry driven by the ‘C’ word – Confidence – the critical driver of spiralling house prices will bolster homeowners’ collective resolve to continue splashing the cash on bi-folds and flush sashes. The higher prices are actually very good news JG and I sincerely hope, perhaps above expectation, that our dopey, lazy salespeople don’t revert to chopping 50% off their prices in the living rooms of Britain, just because they are too lazy to extol the qualities of the fabulous products that we place before them. We are an industry that produces substantially bespoke products, that are custom designed, manufactured and fitted to the specific desires and needs of every homeowner that invites us into their castles. Products that make their homes look and perform tangibly, measurably better. This is the way it has always been. But our products have always been underpriced. Now we are getting decent prices for our wares, albeit largely driven by higher costs, we must stick with the policy of ‘no discounts’, because they won’t get the stuff elsewhere, let alone at cheaper prices. Stay with it JG: it may be bumpy ahead but there is a smooth road on the horizon.

* Danny Williams is managing director of Chelmsford based Pioneer Trading and has been involved with all aspects of the windows and doors industry for 35 years. His activities include manufacturing a full range of windows and doors in PVC-U and aluminium, an IGU facility, retailing and commercial contracting.

NEW APPOINTMENTS

GQA IN OFFENDER REHABILITATION SUPPORT GQA Qualifications are the awarding body working with Novus in a major nationwide offender rehabilitation training scheme. The fenestration industry’s leading awarding and qualifications-writing body is working closely with Novus to deliver training programmes that raise the aspirations of offenders, increase their employability skills and opportunities to find sustainable employment, and help them to build positive futures for themselves, their families and communities. For almost 30 years Novus has been helping men, women and children of all ages and abilities, in custodial and community settings across England and Wales, to take new directions. Novus works in partnership with the Ministry of Justice, Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), Youth Custody Service, HMPPS Wales, G4S, charities and employers to help individuals turn their lives around. GQA is now working with Novus at 14 of its sites, and expects this number to rise over the coming months. The pandemic has greatly affected how training can be delivered, and both GQA and Novus have had to adapt swiftly to online methods and in-cell learning. So far, all participating learners have been working towards an NVQ Level 1 in Health & Safety. Before the pandemic, learners in two prisons had additionally been able to benefit from

“We’ve seen substantial uptake in training from learners at all 14 prison locations, and I’m pleased to be able to say that we anticipate this not just continuing but increasing quickly.” 68

practical training resulting in an NVQ Level 1 in The Principles of Window & Door Installation. At the time of writing, it is anticipated that GQA approved centres will shortly be able to restart practical courses inside custodial settings. In addition to achieving NVQ qualifications, learners can also benefit from the fact that GQA is the sole issuer of CSCS cards for the fenestration industry. For ex-offenders to be able to leave prison with a CSCS card to present to site managers is an additional step on the road to employment. Commenting on its relationship with GQA, Novus’s Awarding Organisations and Compliance Lead, Karen Rose says: “One of the main attractions of working with GQA is its unique ability to provide a combination of qualifications plus CSCS cards. We are extremely pleased with the level of support GQA is providing, and look forward to working with the organisation to develop its involvement with more of our centres in prisons around the UK.” Simon Smith, who heads up the support programme with Novus for GQA added: “We’ve seen substantial uptake in training from learners at all 14 prison locations, and I’m pleased to be able to say that we anticipate this not just continuing but increasing quickly. It’s extremely gratifying to be involved in such a worthwhile initiative. I feel that not only are we making a difference for ex-offenders, but we are also really helping to address the industry’s skills shortages too. I’m proud that GQA can be part of this whole rehabilitation process.” More information on GQA is available at www.gqaqualifications.com.

Brisant Secure has appointed a Finance Director, a new role created as part of the hardware house’s growth plan. Clive Burnett joined Brisant Secure in June, bringing with him more than 20 years of experience in finance. His expertise and knowledge will complement existing skills within the company’s senior management team and help the business to develop further. Before joining Brisant, Clive spent 20 years in the confectionery industry overseeing various complex integrations and supporting the continued growth of Valeo Confectionery into a highly profitable business. Valeo’s roots go back to 1848, and the company owns famous brands like Barratt, Fox’s Glacier Mints and Poppets. Looking at all the brands in Valeo’s portfolio, it’s hard to imagine anyone reading this who hasn’t enjoyed its products at some point or another. Clive says: “Brisant Secure has seen phenomenal growth over the past few years and it’s an exceptionally well-known brand in the trade. It is the strongest out there for what it does. Brisant is all the more impressive because its growth is organic, which is harder to achieve. “I want to develop on the strong foundations already in place and to improve procedures to allow the business to get to that next level. Small businesses that grow rapidly require systems to be put in place to allow for the next stage of growth. I want to ensure there are no barriers or blockages and that the infrastructure can support that ongoing growth. “I recognised a huge opportunity with Brisant Secure and I’m excited to watch the

business continue to thrive. I feel like I’m part of an important management team and I am looking forward to being a key decision maker in the business.” Nick Dutton, CEO of Brisant Secure, says: “Appointing Clive as our new Finance Director is part of our plan for growth which, at its centre, is the development of opportunities for customers. Clive’s knowledge, expertise and experience will help Brisant Secure thrive even further and his connections will help us to be an organisation that is fit for purpose each step of the way as we grow and develop. We are delighted to welcome Clive to our team and look forward to working with him as Brisant continues to flourish.” Brisant Secure has been raising standards in the door industry since it burst onto the locksmith scene in 2013 with its ultrasecure Ultion family of locks and Sweet, its suite of beautiful corrosion resistant hardware. The company has featured in the annual Sunday Times Virgin Atlantic Fast Track 100 for the past two years as one of the UK’s fastest growing businesses. GQA GROWS ITS FIELD OF INFLUENCE 2021 marks the 20th year of operation of GQA Qualifications. During the past twenty years, the organisation has been humbled and honoured to find its influence growing amongst a broad range of key stakeholders and decision-makers. Today, the number of committees, initiatives and collaborations to which GQA has been welcomed has never been higher.

• The Sector Advisory Group for Vehicle Repair and Automotive Glazing. This is a group set up to identify and advise the industries on competence solutions and approved CPD. • The CITB Competence and Skills Group. This is a working party representing all CSCS card schemes to develop a competence framework, including a review of the CSCS card renewal process. GQA’s Chief Executive Officer, Mick Clayton says: “It’s so gratifying that GQA staff are able to help and support so many industry committees. To have a seat at the table when the decisions are being taken that will mould the future of the industries in which we operate is a true honour. Having acquired PAAVQSET, the awarding body for the polymer, engineering, chemical, pharmaceutical and nuclear industries, we are also keen to build on the strong links that this organisation has in its sectors. Going forwards, we also intend to look for more opportunities for collaborative working in the areas of print and construction.”

NEW APPOINTMENT AT TOTAL HARDWARE Leading trade hardware supplier, Total Hardware has further strengthened its technical sales team with the appointment of industry-man Craig Barnett as External Technical Advisor. Having worked directly within the fenestration industry for over three decades, including 23 years spent with Kenrick Hardware based in West Bromwich, Craig brings a wealth of exceptional industry experience and in-depth hardware knowledge. Commenting on his appointment, Craig said: “I am delighted to join Total Hardware at this time. The company is renowned for its choice of window and door hardware solutions, along with the strength of its partnerships with market-leading brands, including Kenricks, delivering unbeatable product choice to their customers. The company continues to invest and launch new hardware solutions and I’m looking forward to showcasing the Quantum range of products along with working with our key partners, Yale, UAP and GU.” Craig joined Total Hardware in June this year. Commenting on his appointment, Chris Pell, General Manager of Total Hardware, said: “Craig is well-known in the industry and having worked closely with him in the past, I know first-hand what an asset he’ll

be to the team. We are pleased to find such a committed and experienced professional and Craig’s appointment will ensure we maintain our momentum as demand for our hardware ranges continues to grow.” Total Hardware supplies quality window and door hardware to trade fabricators and installers across the UK and offers a comprehensive range of solutions for all projects at competitive prices. The business continues to grow year on year and has recently completed an ambitious expansion at its Leeds-based distribution centre increasing its stock capacity by a further 20% to support its growing customer base. And in Craig Barnett, it has an External Technical Advisor with the skills to support their customers. Tel: 0113 243 2255 www.totalhardwareltd.co.uk

The links between GQA and Building Our Skills are firmly established with GQA’s Chief Executive Officer, Mick Clayton, being on the Board of this initiative to help make fenestration a career of choice. However, perhaps less well-known are some of the other organisations with which GQA is helping to shape future decision-making. For example, GQA Chairman, Mike Morris, is part of a Parliamentary Review Group, and GQA has featured in the ‘Parliamentary Review’ talking about the importance of qualifications. This is a guide to political and industry best practice in management is sent to over 500,000 leading business executives.
