Gold Award Girl Scouts
The Mark of the Truly Remarkable

Congratulations Highest Award Girl Scouts!
Dear Friends, Supporters, and Fellow Champions of Change,

The Mother of the Girl Scouts Movement, Juliette Gordon Low, said, “The work of today is the history of tomorrow and we are it’s makers,” and over 100+ years later this remains true. As I sit down to write my very first Gold Award letter as CEO of Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta, I am filled with immense pride and excitement. The first Gold Award was earned in 1924, and it continues to be more than just an honor—it’s a movement, a mindset, and a powerful reminder of what is possible when young women channel their passions into purpose.
This year, we celebrate an incredible group of achievers: over 400 Bronze Award Girl Scouts, 254 Silver Award Girl Scouts, 26 Bronze and Silver Award Council Young Women of Distinction, 9 Gold Award Council Young Women of Distinction, 16 scholarship recipients, and over 120 Gold Award Girl Scouts. Each of these individuals has dedicated themselves to tackling some of the most pressing issues of our time through their impactful projects.
From STEM innovation to women’s health, sustainability, mental health awareness, homelessness, domestic violence prevention, and care for animals, these young leaders are tackling challenges with courage, creativity, and conviction. Each project is a testament to the resilience and vision of our Girl Scouts and a beacon of hope for the future.
Growing up as a Girl Scout in Atlanta, GA, the importance of community and service resonated and I personally know how they shape a person’s life as it has mine. Like many of you, I have witnessed the transformative power of giving back—of seeing a need and stepping up to meet it. These Gold Award projects remind me of the values instilled in us through Girl Scouting: to lead with courage, act with confidence, and live with character. These principles are not just words—they’re the foundation of every bold step these young women take.
This yearbook is more than a celebration of your accomplishments; it’s a glimpse into the future these Girl Scouts are building. You’ll find stories of innovation, determination, and compassion—young leaders advocating for change and making a tangible impact. Their projects are diverse, spanning disciplines and issues, but each shares a common thread: the belief that the world can and should be better.
I invite you to dive into these pages with the same energy and curiosity these young women brought to their work. Celebrate their achievements, honor their vision, and take inspiration from their stories. As we champion their successes, let’s also recognize the network of families, volunteers, mentors, and community members who make these journeys possible.
Together, we are shaping the next generation of changemakers—trailblazers who will continue to challenge the status quo and lead with authenticity and purpose. History is being made, and we are here to witness their glory. The future is bright because of them, and I couldn’t be prouder to stand alongside each of you in supporting their dreams.
Yours in Girl Scouting and Sisterhood,

Jai Ferrell Chief Executive Officer Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta

How to Make STEM Fun for Elementary Students
The root of Julia’s project is that kids often think STEM is just about math and science, losing interest in its creative side. To solve this, she created a hands-on marble run game that teaches elementary students basic engineering skills, problem-solving, and critical thinking in a fun way. To ensure its long-term use, the game will be used in an engineering class; Julia provided 3D printing files so the teacher can replace parts.

Madison Alsobrook
County: Fulton
Troop Advisors: Treva Reddick and Jowanna Owens
Project Advisors: Monica Williams and Dana Roberts Gold Award Coach: Nina Goody
Normalizing Period Health
For her Gold Award project Madison raised awareness about the importance of period health. All over the world, women and girls have deep misunderstandings of their menstrual cycle, rooted in miseducation and shame. Madison decided to help change this, beginning in her community and partnering with RedDrop, a menstrual product company. She created an informational video, which is now uploaded to various platforms, showcasing topics from what a period is and means for a girl, to tips on an easier cycle.
“Completing my Gold Award stands as a testament to resilience, teaching me the true value of commitment and the difference one person can make.”

Basics of the Barnyard
Brooke’s Gold Award project addresses the lack of agriculture education in the community. In recent years, individuals lack information regarding agriculture and the importance it has on their lives. Brooke created bulletin boards at her high school’s barn to showcase their animals and how they benefit the area. For each animal, she shared their contribution to human consumption and agriculture industries. Brooke’s project serves as a reminder of how important agriculture and animals are to communities.

In her project, Daphne researched different produce items and healthy recipes. She created information cards and gathered recipes to put in the 180 Degree Farm’s shop. Now, when people buy from their shop they know what they’re eating and how to eat it.

Elena Torgerson
County: Forsyth
Troop Advisor: Norma Torgerson
Project Advisor: Derek Taylor
Gold Award Coach: Jessica Weis
Every Drop Counts
Elena’s project taught high school kids about the impacts of water on our communities and the importance of water conservation in the future. She brought to light the idea that overdevelopment has caused many of the water problems in society today. With her Gold Award team, project advisor, and Gold coach she was able to make a presentation that will be shown to students for years to come and will positively impact the environment.

Kai Turé
County: Dekalb
Troop Advisor: Vanika Jordan
Project Advisors: Christy Flynn and Kelvin Owens
Gold Award Coach: Jennifer Lester
Arts for All
Kai’s Gold Award project tackled the decline in arts education, which disproportionately impacts public and lower-income schools. She identified a school in her community that recently lost their arts program. Kai created an arts curriculum and met weekly with students, faculty, and community leaders. The 4-month program concluded with a Night of the Arts. The students proudly showcased what they learned during the program for over 100 members of the community.

SESAA Day (Self-Esteem and Self-Awareness Day)
Cortney initiated and led an annual Self-Esteem and SelfAwareness Day for All at her school to promote mental health awareness. This project emphasizes the importance of mental well-being in academic, work and other public environments, and its sustainability is ensured by officially recognizing it as a school event.

Sophie Ullman
County: Fulton
Troop Advisor: Jeannie Ullman
Project Advisor: Liz Crane
Gold Award Coach: Jeannie Ullman
Hands on Music for Elementary Schools
For her Gold Award project Sophie took 34 previously unusable guitars from her elementary school and gave them new life. The extensive refurbishment of 34 guitars included new strings and recalibration; she accompanied them with tuners, picks, straps and footstools for each. Upon completion, she turned them over to the new program called LEAP in conjunction with the music therapy program in Fulton County along with a month’s worth of lesson plans.

Maddie Van Oss
County: Fulton
Troop Advisor: Teri Anulewicza
Project Advisor: Heidi Harrington

Trail Restoration
Maddie’s Gold Award project, Trail Restoration, focused on enhancing environmental sustainability and safety at Murphy Candler Park. She led a team in removing invasive species, mulching trails, and creating a natural barrier to prevent erosion. To encourage long-term community involvement, Maddie educated younger Scouts and local residents on identifying native versus invasive plants and safe trail maintenance practices. Through workshops and handson sessions, participants gained practical skills, fostering awareness and sustainable trail upkeep.

A Manual of Homecare & Cleaning Supply Kits with Furnish with Love
Poverty and homelessness are huge problems in America and Atlanta specifically. An organization that helps combat this is Furnish with Love, a non-profit that furnishes the apartments of families newly transitioned from homelessness. They noticed a problem: families often were not well versed about the tasks required to care for a home. Therefore Anja designed, wrote, and distributed a manual to help them. In addition, she created well-stocked cleaning kits to get the families started.
“Accept the challenge. It’s a tremendous amount of work, but what you gain is immeasurable.”

Favorite Girl Scout Memory: Our troop’s weekend trip to Savannah to visit the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Museum was unforgettable. Hearing stories about JGL is one thing, but seeing her birthplace brought her legacy to life. Exploring the city together made it even more special. We packed so much into those two days, creating memories I’ll treasure forever.
A Tribute to Dad: Advocating for Brain Tumor Awareness
Lucy’s Gold Award centered on raising awareness of Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), a brain tumor affecting over 10,000 people each year. Inspired by her father’s battle with this illness, she revitalized the Chris Snaith Foundation to support patients and to fund GBM research. Through various initiatives, Lucy aimed to increase awareness and further the Foundation’s mission, showcasing the importance of community efforts in the fight against GBM and providing necessary resources for those affected.

Development of Horsemanship in Future Generations
A lack of knowledge about horse safety has caused issues for the public, horse owners, and riders. Caroline addressed this by hosting a workshop for a local troop on basic horsemanship and safety. After researching and speaking with experts in the community, she developed the necessary components to teach future generations and share with others. After the workshop and with the help of her advisor, she assembled the information into a website that she shared with others.

Elizabeth Warren
County: Gilmer
Troop Advisors: Diane Wilson and Sherry Buckner
Project Advisor: MaryEllen Powell
Gold Award Coach: Elizabeth Lewis
Big Sister Program
Elizabeth worked under Gilmer High School’s FCCLA program to create her Big Sister Program during the 20232024 school year. This program aimed to pair freshmen girls with senior girls, and started strong with a total of thirty pairs for the first year! These girls spent the year bonding through events and outside communication. Elizabeth wanted to create a program that promoted connection and wisdom coming from someone at a more relatable age.

Nala Washington
County: Fulton
Troop Advisors: Tamareeshi Geffrard and Jakita Watson
Project Advisor: Quanda Spencer
Gold Award Coach: Fran Houston
Green for Good
Nala’s project focused on tackling the issues of the lack of healthy foods since the average American does not consume many healthy nutrients. She did this by teaching children how to garden. The results were great as many of the children got better knowledge of gardening and what it means to work hard.

Table Scraps: Household Hazards and Helpers for a Healthy Pet
Obesity and the accidental ingestion of toxic foods are major problems among domestic animals, which can cause health problems and costly emergency veterinary bills. This is largely due to the lack of reliable and easily accessible information about how everyday foods can affect cats and dogs. To combat this issue, London hosted three presentations to various age groups about pet dietary safety and distributed 500 printed pamphlets to local animal shelters for new adopters.

Meredith Wieland
County: Fulton
Troop Advisor: Jennifer Wieland
Project Advisor: Lizen Hayes
Gold Award Coach: Jeannie Ullman
Nature’s Classroom
Children are spending the less time in nature and outdoors. Meredith created an interactive scavenger hunt at her local nature preserve designed to inspire time outdoors. Children can find the fairy houses Meredith installed next to a plant that she labeled with a permanent sign. She also created a map of the garden and a brochure with an interesting fact about each plant along the way. It is now a permanent educational resource for the community.

Lauren Wilhelm
County: Cobb
Troop Advisor: Teri Anulewicz
Project Advisor: Betsy Palmer

Laundry Care for Refugees in Atlanta
The issue Lauren addressed is when legal refugees come to Atlanta and they lack the proper laundry supplies needed. Lauren worked with Catholic Charities Atlanta to provide laundry kits to these refugees. She collected and assembled more than 50 laundry basket kits which would support more than 50 families in need. Each laundry kit contained a plastic laundry basket, fabric softener, detergent, stain removal spray, dryer sheets and a flyer showing how to do laundry.

Emma Williams
County: Fulton
Troop Advisors: Jeannie Ullman and Elizabeth Cotton
Project Advisor: Rebecca Williams
Gold Award Coach: Deborah Burke Johnson
The Love Wall
Emma’s project addressed the overwhelming transition to a new school. The project combined Berriew School in Wales, UK and her local middle school in Alpharetta, Georgia. The “Love Wall” is a mural that tied these two schools together. Each student painted a heart, and the project was a visual representation that no one is alone. The project was sustained through the “Webb leaders,” a school program that helps bridge incoming students to their new school.

Kennedi Williams
County: Cobb
Troop Advisors: Rosalind King and Lesley Williams
Project Advisor: RaJeen Keys
Gold Award Coach: Rosalind King
From Young to Old
The root cause of Kennedi’s project is that nursing home residents are in a home away from their families and do not have much social interaction. This limited social contact is what causes loneliness and contributes to health problems. Kennedi addressed the issue by working with kids and teaching them how to make cards that would uplift the elderly. She brought the nursing home the cards to help them feel less lonely.

Strings and Things
Strings and Things aimed to address the lack of string instrumental programs in elementary school. Lauren provided free, engaging lessons to the students at the Turner Chapel AME Summer, teaching them how to play the violin and viola. In addition, she gave out pamphlets to parents to inform them of the benefits of their children playing an instrument. This project will be sustained by Dr. Michelle Courtney and the Turner Chapel Summer Camp staff.

Mary Woodward
County: Fulton
Troop Advisors: Heather Lane and Suzy Briggs
Project Advisor: Elaine Goldberg
Gold Award Coach: Barbara Foerst
Sustainability in Beauty
Mary’s Gold Award project tackled the environmental impact of the beauty industry, focusing on harmful chemicals in products. Research shows many beauty products contain microplastics and toxins linked to health issues, with only 13% being free from microplastics. Although sustainable options exist, they tend to be expensive and hard to find. Mary educated others on making eco-friendly beauty products using common supplies. By reaching over thirty people through presentations she promoted resourcefulness and awareness of sustainable beauty practices.

Kendyl Young
County: Gwinnett
Troop Advisors: Anitra Young and Tara Brewster
Project Advisor: Alexis Pickett
Gold Award Coach: Cindy Parker
Volleyball for All (VB4ALL)
Kendyl’s Gold Award project, Volleyball for All, was developed to allow special education students the opportunity to participate in an after-school club. Due to the extra assistance required, it was not always possible for special education students to attend the volleyball club. Knowing that being involved in sports has been a critical aspect of her growth as a person and added to her enjoyment of school, Kendyl felt this was an issue facing her community.

Tattered, Not Forgotten
Troop 884: Fulton County
Troop Leaders: Kathryn White and Merrie Beth Salazar
Girl Scouts: Finley Salazar and Aubree White
After discovering 64% of Americans surveyed didn’t know how to retire nylon and polyester flags, Aubree White and Finley Salazar took action. They created a video on flag retirement methods, including cutting stars for the Stars for Our Troops program, which resulted in more than 1,000 stars being distributed to U.S. Veterans, Military, and First Responders. The video gained attention from large Atlanta-based companies, leading to flag donation boxes nationwide in retail and office locations.

Flag Retirement Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEXaHQRekpM
Impact:
• The project reached international heights when Paratroopers took 100 stars to Normandy, France, for the 80th D-Day Anniversary. The stars were parachuted from a wartime C-47 aircraft and given to Veterans in Normandy.
• Aubree and Finley educated more than 530 Girl Scout campers and volunteers about how to retire flags.
• The Silver Award Project influenced Cox Enterprises and SALUTE, their Veterans’ Employee Resource Group. Now, Cox Enterprises has placed flag collection boxes in more than 30 retail and office locations nationwide.
• The project attracted the attention of another major Atlanta-based corporation, Home Depot. Now, tattered flags at Home Depot stores will be donated to Stars for our Troops.
“Just as a tattered and torn American flag reflects wear and tear, it can also mirror the feelings of veterans who may feel similarly worn out and overlooked. It’s our responsibility to respect both our flags and our veterans—even though they may be tattered, they are not forgotten.” – Finley Salazar

Mindset Matters
Troop 22090: Fulton County
Troop Leaders: Sana Imad and Missy Rahman
Girl Scouts: Ayah Akber, Salwa Imad, Samreen Khan and Zaara Yussouff
The issue our project aims to address is anxiety and depression amongst girls going through adolescence. Teaching relevant skills and concepts such as I-statements will help them deal with challenges they face in middle school and beyond. There are many different types of circumstances and things that can trigger anxiety and depression. We aim to assist them by developing coping skills and strategies. We received positive feedback throughout our project and requests for additional workshops.

Troop 16128: Cobb County
Troop Leaders: Allison Shah and Claire Chotiner
Girl Scouts: Lila Chotiner, Gabby Grossman and Loli Manglogiannis

Troop 16128 built a clothing closet at a Title I elementary school in their community. To start the process they conducted clothing drives to collect jackets and coats in order to fill the closet with clean clothes. Next, they built shelving to hold the clothes and make them more accessible to the students. Now that the closet is built and organized, troops will be able to add clothes for students in the future.

Pillowcases for Kids with Cancer

Troop 383: Cobb County
Troop Leaders: Inez Danukarjanto and Jane Lloyd
Girl Scouts: Madeleine Grimaldo, Gracen Liu, Abree Park and Ella Sacks
Four Girl Scouts from Troop 383 partnered with CURE to uplift the spirits of young cancer patients enduring long hospital stays by sewing pillowcases featuring vibrant patterns. These simple, colorful pillowcases can significantly boost a child’s mood during chemotherapy, contributing positively to their overall experience and resilience in their battle against cancer. To inspire others to get involved, the Scouts created informative flyers and a video demonstrating how to make these cheerful pillowcases.
CURE (https://curechildhoodcancer.org) is always looking for volunteers for community service and their events.

Troop 21701: Cobb County Troop Leaders: Joy Bryant, Kaleya Harris and Davida Lockett
Girl Scouts: Grace Bryant, Daphne Green, Kayla Harris, Genesis Hudson, Miracle Ibeh, Ife Johnson, Averie Marcus, Addison Reeves and Kyi Roberts
Domestic violence can negatively impact children’s social functioning including school absenteeism. To combat education inequality for children living in volatile domestic situations, we created a reading corner at a women’s and children’s shelter. We observed the need for accessible books. Our book drive collected books and furniture to transform the area into a library. This cozy space provides children a chance to develop their reading skills while offering an escape to families facing challenging circumstances.
Our sustainable reading corner project continues to benefit children and families at the shelter by providing ongoing access to books. The reading corner is separated by reading level. The book levels range from age 0 to adult. As children grow to the next reading level, they can share these books with others, extending the impact. Our Troop will revisit annually to replenish and reorganize the “cozy corner” space. This initiative fosters literacy, offers a mental escape, and shows care to vulnerable families. The Words and Wonders project ensures that future generations will have a cozy, inspiring place to read and grow.
