WELCOME

Dear Reader, travel a lot – both for business and leisure. On my travels I continue to experience new things and keep meeting extremely interesting people. I find it especially exciting to come across individuals who are shaking things up with their ideas. I have always thought it a great privilege to be able to ask questions of these personalities and then to listen carefully to their replies. This is because these exchanges have frequently inspired me both professionally and on a personal level. I feel a sense of achievement when people provide me with new impulses, which then enable me to take entrepreneurial steps that further develop Engel & Völkers as a company. I do not believe, however, that coincidence plays a part in this process. It is my conviction that you have to operate in an organized fashion in order to attain your goals. I have, for example, never tried to be the number one salesman. Instead, it has always been important to me to provide a more comprehensive service than others. I enjoy my work enormously, even though it can be quite challenging at times. But, I have always been an entrepreneur and live by the motto “work hard and play hard.” I recharge my batteries by playing polo – a hobby that I pursue with great passion. Interestingly, there are a lot of parallels between this sport and the demands of my everyday professional life. Just like on the polo field, speed, perfect teamwork, precision, reliability and being proactive are essential in business. I have recognized many of these qualities in those who have given me invaluable food for thought over the decades. As our GG magazine has always been synonymous with fresh, new perspectives, too, this current addition is devoted to men who make the world go round. Attractive perspectives are also provided by a selection of the most beautiful real estate from around the world, which we have, once again, put together for you on the following pages. Sincerely

WELCOME

Magical Men … Elon Musk is working tirelessly on his vision of making flights into space affordable and is revolutionizing the electric car industry with his Tesla company. While Donald Robertson is conquering not only the fashion world with his colorful sketches via Instagram. For our summer issue we bring together inspiring men who take risks and make a difference. After all, nothing seems to be sexier and more attractive than creativity, a trait which – according to psychologist Gregory Miller – might be understood as the human equivalent of the feathers of a peacock: Potential mates interpret them as a sign of mental strength. Kilian Hennessy, who is a descendant of the famous cognac family – his grandfather Kilian is the original founder of the luxury goods group LVMH – creates deliciously luxurious scents with an exceptional eye for detail and an almost erotic appeal. His perfume company, which he created all on his own, is so innovative, high-end and sought-after that a few weeks ago Estée Lauder Companies Inc. acquired the prestigious fragrance brand. We met Kilian Hennessy in his beloved Paris shortly after he signed the deal and followed him on a tour of his favorite haunts in the city. From page 46 on we present many more extraordinary men and their achievements from the worlds of music, politics, religion and entertainment in our “Leading Men” portfolio. Enjoy & sincerely yours,

PHOTO: CHRISTIAN SCHOPPE

Michaela Cordes A huge thanks to The Peninsula Hotel Paris! The cover photo of Kilian Hennessy was shot on their rooftop. Families are breaking the cycle of poverty In many areas of the world, parents are struggling income means that these small business owners often can’t send their children to school or provide adequate healthcare. But there is hope.

World Vision has been providing financial services around the world through its network of microfinance institutions at VisionFund. These small loans, coupled with savings services and business training, are having a real impact on countless borrowers throughout the world,” says Scott Brown, President & CEO of VisionFund International. People like Mao (pictured top left) and her family are seeing direct benefits from VisionFund’s support. Mao and her husband took out a small loan after struggling to provide for their relatives. Mao bought nets and set up a new fish farming business to compliment an existing rice paddy. The investment is already paying off and Mao is anticipating new opportunities. “Microfinance is one of the key instruments used to bring about sustainable change,” says Scott Brown. “Throughout the world, I have seen how children like Phan (Mao’s son) can experience hope in a brighter future when their parents are able to increase family incomes. Access to healthcare, education and clean water are only but a few benefits children experience when their families’ incomes improve.” Last year, World Vision’s microfinance work through VisionFund impacted nearly four million children in over thirty countries around the world. Visit VisionFund.org to learn more about World Vision’s work in microfinance and how small loans and other financial services are bringing about lasting change for millions of families. or over ten years

If you would like to contribute to World Vision’s work by making a donation or are interested in learning more about our microfinance projects around the world, please contact Annalisa Plachesi at: +44 020 7821 8673 or send an email to Annalisa_Plachesi@wvi.org

HOW MICROFINANCE WORKS In developing countries, many people have great ideas but lack the capital to start or improve a new business. Without the resources needed to access formal financial services, these people need somewhere else to turn to. That’s where microfinance comes in. World Vision uses microfinance as a powerful tool to respond to the economic needs of people all over the world. Through a donation of $5000, nearly 900 children are impacted, over ten years, when their families receive small loans and increase family incomes. Nearly 73 percent of our clients are women, making a direct impact on children. With a repayment rate greater than 98 percent, borrowers are successfully paying back their loans.

FINE FABRIC Through January 2017, the Vitra Design Museum has an exhibition on entitled “Alexander Girard. A Designer’s Universe.” The textile and interior designer had a penchant for vibrant colors, folk art, ornamentation and naive motifs.

MEDUSAN ART Goldfish? No, this aquarium is made for jellyfish. Called the Darwin Tank, it projects their gentle movements onto the wall by using its domed top as a magnifying glass. Definitely more relaxing than Netflix. Available from darwinsect.com.

BULL’S-EYE The “Gun Country” installation by New York artist and sculptor Michael Murphy is made of 150 frighteningly realistic-looking plastic guns. When viewed from the front, it forms a map of the United States.

PRECIOUS MEALS We enjoy food most when it’s also a feast for the eyes. So how about some chrome trout, golden asparagus or silver muffins? All it takes is a squirt of edible spray paint – a dazzling idea from The Deli Garage. CANDY LANDSCAPES Working under the name Pip & Pop, Australian artist Tanya Schultz creates psychedelic pop art that is meant to last only for a short while. Her fantastic, crazy, kitschy dreamscapes are composed of colored sugar, candy beads, glitter and local trinkets – or of thousands of rolls of washi tape, like here.

PLAYGROUND INTERVIEW

The Crafts Man Tyler Hays is a true renaissance man. The New Yorkbased artist paints, makes pottery and designs jeans, leather bags, clocks and cutlery – plus extraordinarily beautiful furniture for his label BDDW. Tyler Hays, you worked as a sculptor and painter before starting to

I never really changed disciplines, I just do it all at the same time. I paint, sculpt and spend my time making ceramics, as well as designing and making clothing, and creating furniture. When I was a young artist, I also worked as a handyman to pay the bills. That never really changed, it just got out of hand. design furniture. What made you change direction?

How did these various experiences end up influencing your work?

1

I have always worked in many different fields, but developed a particular type of aesthetic through painting. I think that I am also influenced by the slow process of continuously reworking an image. This involves looking intently at things and constantly going over them in your mind. What are your favorite materials to work with? Right now, I love fabric and stone, but my preferences change all the time. I work in every medium except glassblowing. Just recently, I have started learning to play the piano, and that takes up a lot of my time … In addition to your studio in Philadelphia, in the U.S., you also have

one in Milan. Is it important to you to have a foothold in Europe?

No, not really. I love Italy and have always had a big crush on that country. I also love seeing my work trying to exist outside my usual surroundings, so Italy is a natural fit. Do you allow yourself to be influenced by trends? No, I don’t really follow trends. I really just do what I like. I’m sure trends influence all of us but I try not to think about that. Something like a sideboard in your collection can easily cost as much as a car. Do you tend to see yourself as a luxury furniture maker?

That was never my goal. Rather, it was like this: After 9/11 everybody was looking for a job, and at the time wealthy people were the only ones who were spending money on furniture. Back then we 3 had a few extravagant pieces and these were the only ones we were able to sell. At the time I thought that there may only 1 A leather-framed mirror hangs above be 20 people in the world who would spend $20,000 on the honey-colored “Lake” sideboard a sideboard, but it turned out there were 20 of them in made of Osage wood 2 Tyler Hays in his shop in SoHo. in mind when you work on a design? No, not really. I like

to think of objects standing on their own, in a white box. But sometimes I also look very closely at a space and wait for inspiration to come, as to what would be the right piece for that spot. Can you name some projects that you are currently

My “M. Crow” store project would take an entire book to explain properly. It is a general store that was founded more than 100 years ago in Lostine, Oregon, in the Wallowa valley where I grew up. I bought the store in 2012 to save it from closing down. Now, I design and make products specifically for M. Crow & Co. Of all the things I have done, designing and producing clothing for the store is what I enjoy most. I’m also trying my hand at brewing beer. As part of that, I have been growing hops and developing a small-scale brewing process for “wild beer.” Is there an object you have not yet designed, but would love to? Kitchen appliances are definitely at the top of my list. working on?

More on the Frenchman and other equally inspiring gentlemen who impress with their creations – please turn the page …

The Seducer His creations exude sensual eroticism and their packaging alone is a work of art. Initiating desire by combining precious essences – that is what Kilian Hennessy, successor of the famous French cognac dynasty, seems to have inherited from an early age. We met the magician of scents, whose label “byKilian” is selling half a million flacons worldwide per year, in his beloved Paris, where he was born – and his idea to stir up the fragrance industry. Kilian Hennessy splits his time between New York and Paris. His favorite gallery is the Galerie Chahan in the Rue de Lille.

“It has always been very important to me to know that my success was exclusively due to me, and not to my last name.” KILIAN HENNESSY

Each of the seven byKilian boutiques around the world – like this one in the Rue Cambon – carries a fragrance dedicated to the location.

ust unwrapping one of his products turns into a feast for the senses: a black silk tassel dangles from a silver key that unlocks the black lacquered wooden box. In it, the carved glass bottle of perfume is waiting for its new owner on a bed of black satin. “Creations that don’t have a soul don’t interest me,” says Kilian Hennessy in his irresistible and very charming French-accented English, explaining the reasons for the elaborate, luxurious packaging of his fragrances. With an unusual mix of elegance, traditional craftsmanship and a keen eye for the smallest details, the founder of byKilian perfumes has created such a highly desirable company that several luxury groups tried to outbid each other to go into business with the successful Frenchman.

They are called “Voulez-Vous Coucher avec Moi,” “Liaisons Dangereuses,” “Cruel Intentions” or “Good Girl Gone Bad” and emanate desire and warmth, sensuality and mystery, luxury and elegance. Worldwide, byKilian sells a total of 500,000 bottles of his exclusive scents per year. Add to that clutches, scented candles and soaps, as well as earrings and chains on which you can daub your favorite scent to preserve it longer than on the skin. Ten years ago the creator of this elegant world of fragrances decided to found a small but sophisticated empire of his own. At the time Kilian Hennessy was 34 years old, but already looking back on a long career in the luxury perfume industry. He had also written his dissertation at the Sorbonne about the semantics of scents. Living off his famous last name was never an option. Instead, he always knew he wanted to create his own business, states the dynamic Frenchman, who was born into the famous cognac dynasty and whose business merged with champagne label Moët & Chandon and then Louis Vuitton to form the LVMH luxury group.

back then, at the end of the 19th and in the first half of the 20th centuries. How high-end and handcrafted the production of these scents had been. How sensually they had been packaged. I stayed for a few hours in this tiny museum and left with a vision for my own company. The next morning I canceled all my fashion job interviews and resigned from my post at L’Oréal. What exactly was it that so inspired

The thought of putting perfumes back on the market that are genuine luxury products, and of taking this wonderful vision to the customers. One thing was immediately clear to me: when I start my own company, everything will have to be authentic, and will have to represent me and my values right down to the last detail. In this respect, building my business has never felt like hard work. Having said that, my idea was not new, of course. There already were several perfumers who had stopped working on commercial fragrances and had successfully founded their own companies. Like Serge Lutens in 1995, ten years before me. Creating a luxury perfume that costs two dollars to make, only to sell it for $100 in stores – that just didn’t feel right anymore. You are basically producing a luxury product for the price of a T-shirt made in China. I had started to seriously look for a new job in the fashion industry. But then, one night, I visited the Baccarat Museum here in Paris. There was a small exhibition themed around a century of Baccarat perfume bottles. I was completely smitten by the displays and marveled at the thick silk, the hand-cut bottles. All of a sudden I became aware of what perfumes had represented

it means to build a luxury brand.

People automatically associate your family name with a cultured background and traditional values that have been passed down through the generations, and now live on in your company byKilian.

To me, creation without purpose, without a soul, is just decoration, and I’m not interested in that. Yes, I would like to create objects that last a lifetime. And for this, they have to have a soul. That’s why every time I start working on a collection, it is always built on a strong artistic foundation. That is its architectural structure, so to speak. Or is that just a fantasy?

A perfect day in Paris – for Kilian Hennessy this means going for a meal at Caviar Kaspia, one of his favorite restaurants (top right), followed by a drink with his friends at the Castel nightclub (bottom left). Elegant, cultured and witty.

Well, both are alcohols, but one is not for drinking (smiles). I feel the creative process is similar because in the cognac business you mix different blends until you achieve a perfect, harmonious balance. It’s the same in the perfume business. Both fields also require marketing. You have to travel around the world and make personal appearances to generate awareness of the brand and your product. fume?

Laurent, Stella McCartney and Jean Paul Gaultier, among others. I was very lucky that such a great man – the world’s most talented perfumer – was my mentor for ten years. From him, I learnt the most important lesson: that you have to keep surprising your clients with creative fragrances. And how exactly do you do that? How do you create an unforgettable scent? Well if only it was so easy! I believe that a great perfume is like a striking woman: not necessarily the most beautiful, but the one you remember! Can you describe your typical client? I have no idea, and in truth I am not really that interested in having one. I believe that this information would interfere with my vision and distract me. I see my perfumes like the chapters of a book. That’s why some collections end, because the book has reached its conclusion. As soon as I finish a book and have included all the chapters, I go to the perfumer and try to express the emotions that the names I have chosen convey to me.

Back then, my competitors – and some of them still do this today – used very simple glass bottles with printed adhesive labels. Very plain, not at all high-end. A stock bottle with a sticker and a plastic screw cap, but the whole thing costs $450. I think that clients must be asking themselves what they are spending so much money on. For my first collection “L’Œuvre Noire,” I went back to what I had seen and experienced that night at the Baccarat Museum. I created a genuine luxury perfume collection – with silk tassels, keys and lacquered wooden boxes. We had the glass bottles elabSo instead of giving your perfumer the ingredients you describe your orately engraved by hand, gave them a metal label with the name of feelings and they then translate these into a fragrance? There were, of course, several steps along the way, but the day that sticks in my mind was when we had our launch at Bergdorf Goodman. As luck would have it, Elisabeth, who I am married to today, was the buyer there, so you could say she “launched” me. That was in October 2007. In the space of only two hours we sold all but two of the 72 perfumes we had brought along among the 50 guests. Two months later we were already ranking number 7! Being that successful at Bergdorf Goodman meant that we became well known throughout the United States and so were able to sell all over the country. Two years later we started making a profit. What I am particularly happy about is how much the clients love the perfumes. I recently met with the owner of Zadig & Voltaire, who is in the process of developing a perfume with Shiseido BPI. They said they had talked about me: “byKilian is luxury, luxury and more luxury. They only use the very best ingredients.” On top of that your perfumes also have a very erotic effect. his luxurious residence, built in a striking Bauhaus style, is situated at a very peaceful address in the desirable Munich neighbourhood known as Waldtrudering. It is particularly impressive for its split-level design and its large, light-flooded interior spaces. The living room alone spans some 94 m² in size. Extensive renovation work was carried out in 2012 and 2013, culminating in the creation of the ‘Villa in White’.

A designer kitchen fitted with high-end appliances was installed, and all the bathrooms in the house were fully refurbished. The option is also available to reinstate a pool area in the property’s home spa. With a total interior of approx. 516 m², there is also ample scope here for combining work and home life under one roof. Shielded from the road, this property also affords uncompromised privacy to its residents.

JOCHEN ZEITZ SOCIETY BOOKS ADDRESSES PERSONAL

When Jochen Zeitz opened his Segera Retreat at the foot of Mount Kenya, he set new standards for sustainable ecotourism in Africa. Now, in a further attempt to help the continent gain more visibility, the dedicated environmentalist and former Puma CEO is converting a grain silo in Cape Town into a spectacular museum for contemporary African art.

The Lure of Africa …

PHOTO: ZEITZ MOCAA

Africa has played a key role in Jochen Zeitz’s life for more than two decades: its nature, its art and the continent’s biodiversity. In 2009, the former head of Puma founded an environmental foundation that bears his name and is dedicated to preserving the earth’s ecosphere. His latest project is the construction of a major museum for African art in an old grain silo in Cape Town’s harbor area. TEXT: Uta Abendroth

IWC’s pilot’s watches allow you to wear this passion on your wrist, so they are popular among watch lovers around the world,” explains Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaff hausen. The legendary watchmaking family developed the first pilot’s watch in 1936, so IWC marked 4 this 80th anniversary with a gala event entitled “Come fly with us.” Among the guests were actors Hilary Swank, Rosamund Pike, Christoph Waltz, Elyas M’Barek and Moritz Bleibtreu, as well as Formula One racing drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. In addition to the Pepe Lienhard Big Band, whose jazz and swing numbers drew guests onto the dance floor, the 1930s-themed show also saw performances by Patti Austin, Ronan Keating, Curtis 8 Stigers, Eric Harland and Till Brönner. It is the visual characteristics that make a pilot’s watch special. The similarities with the displays on a cockpit instrument panel are unmistakable. After all, this type of watch was once an essential navigational device. IWC pilot’s watches also boast a soft-iron inner case, which shields them from magnetic fields.

Is this the perfect symbiosis of architecture and landscape? For his complex project, Silverman tracked down the most beautiful homes. On 272 pages he shows how carefully each of the architects has embedded their design in the environment. We lose ourselves in the broad, impressive expanses of Norway and South Africa, marvel at Moroccan-looking buildings, and take deep breaths on wood-paneled patios with views of the Swedish countryside. Stunning!

Karl Lagerfeld has been producing ideas for Fendi, the Roman fashion house, since 1965. The vision – magnificent and lavish. The Italians naturally love every fiber of his work. Steidl has now collated five decades of FENDI by Karl Lagerfeld in a wooden box pack: interviews, 137 designs, a DVD and draft logos. Just like with Lagerfeld’s creations, no expense was spared. A tremendous abundance of ideas and exceptional presentation – bravo!

Finery Under Foot Wooden and stone floors may be very attractive to look at, but they don’t automatically make a home feel or look particularly homely. A carpet on the other hand can be a wonderful way of introducing structure to any room: a carpet is laid on the floor, on this carpet stands a sofa, next to the sofa a side table is placed and on it a lamp. The entire ensemble acts like an island in the room. There are many different ways of applying this principle of adapting a carpet to fit an interior space. Ulrike Broermann, owner of the Düsseldorf-based company CAP, combines classical elements found in oriental carpets with contemporary and minimalist influences in her designs. ugs are experiencing a renaissance.

The philosophy behind a carpet’s motif plays a key role for this interior designer, and one thing is also clear: a carpet is slow-growing. Row by row and centimetre for centimetre it develops, the pattern emerging gradually like the printed page from an inkjet printer. CAP carpets are made of 100 percent natural materials, 80 percent cotton and 20 percent pure wool. There is an anti-slip layer on the underside. The carpets, as robust as they are striking in their multiple designs, are produced in nine different sizes in Belgium. This “Made in Europe” pledge guarantees not only short delivery times but also quality of the highest standard. Learn more at www.carpets-plaids.com

Man of Action

T

Rather, Alejandro Aravena has made a name for himself constructing buildings for the poor in his home country of Chile, and by working creatively and practically on reconstruction efforts following natural disasters. For example, when a volcanic eruption destroyed the Patagonian city of Chaitén and 5,000 inhabitants had to be relocated, he stepped up to the plate. Aravena considers his studio to be a “do tank,” rather than a think tank. The fact that he was awarded this year’s Pritzker Architecture Prize – the highest distinction for architects – was a surprise, and not only because the 48-yearold looks positively youthful among the lineup of previous prizewinners. The jury’s announcement contained the real newsflash: “His work gives economic opportunity to the less privileged, mitigates the effects of natural disasters, reduces energy consumption, and provides welcoming public space.” Architecture was hitherto mostly focused on the creation and design of landmark buildings – idealism captured in stone, but Aravena considers his designs part of a social process. He personifies a new type of architect, who, when conceiving a building, cares about more than just the design, surfaces and spaces. This is also why he has been entrusted with the directorship of this year’s Architecture Biennale in Venice, the most important architectural exhibition in the world. Here, too, he addresses the subjects of people’s quality of life, sustainable construction and overcoming the status quo.
