WELCOME Dear Readers, s Friedrich Schiller put it way back at the beginning of the nineteenth century: “To all the rest are hope and mirth, when spring renews its prime.” It’s a sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with. After – what at least feels like – an excessively long winter season, a great surge of energy always grips me at the sight of the first spring sunshine. I feel particularly reinvigorated to tackle new projects. My hometown of Hamburg presents itself in all its glory. The trees around the Alster Lake start to bloom and the numerous parks are once again resplendent in lush greens. But it is not only Hamburg that wakes from its hibernation at that time of the year, many other places also make attractive vacation spots in spring. My personal springtime dream destination is Mallorca. Until well into March, its roughly seven million almond trees turn the Balearic Island into a sea of white and pink blossoms. My family and I enjoy this impressive spectacle of nature at my historical finca “Son Coll” in the southwest of the island. Greece also holds a great fascination for me. In its capital Athens, you can experience the flair of a modern metropolis, while at the same time exploring world-famous ancient sites. Those who would like to spend agreeable hours by the seaside should head for the Athenian Riviera with its scenic beaches, or to the many picturesque islands like Santorini, Mykonos and Crete, of course. For those who prefer spending their vacation onboard a boat rather than on dry land, the waters between the islands and the mainland provide many options for varied, memorable days. Springtime in Europe is also perfect for city trips due to the mild, but not yet overly elevated temperatures. I recently explored the Portuguese capital Lisbon. Its Baixa old town boasts narrow streets and charming tiled frontages that create a unique atmosphere. A visit to the fortress of Castelo de São Jorge is equally impressive. From there, visitors have a great view of the whole city, all the way down to the Tagus River. This current edition of GG magazine provides further inspiration for trips to the most stunning travel destinations around the world. And if you are still looking for your dream property, you are bound to find it perusing GG, too. I hope you enjoy this latest edition.

The Art of Travel … They’re increasingly harder to find – those places where time seems to stand still but which have nevertheless adapted to the modern age. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of one of the world’s most elegant and spectacular hotels – the H ôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc on Cap d’Antibes in southern France – we have put together another travel issue. Join us for a tour of the beautiful French Riviera and learn the history of this traditional, iconic hotel that was originally built as a haunt for writers. Accompany us to Namibia in southwest Africa for a glimpse of what is perhaps the continent’s most gorgeous scenery; visit the Caribbean island of Mustique, made famous by Princess Margaret and Mick Jagger; acquaint yourself with two variations on luxury in Bali – deep in the jungle and beside the sea; take a journey into the past with the beautifully restored Orient Express. And if you’d like to know what’s been happening in Mallorca, read all about the well-known Cappuccino Group’s grand coup: The Hotel Mamá in the island’s capital, Palma. Enjoy our travel issue, we hope it provides lots of inspiration! Yours,

PETRA WINTER Petra Winter is the editorin-chief of fashion magazines Madame and Monsieur, a position that requires lots of nofrills travel. But one recent train ride was different: “On the Venice Simplon-OrientExpress, the journey is the destination,” she says. “As an Agatha Christie fan, I’ve often imagined traveling on this train – and the real experience was just as I imagined it.”

About 20 years ago, Argentinean architecture photographer Eduardo Marquez moved to the Spanish vacation island of Mallorca. For GG, he photographed “Villa Seahouse,” which features in our For Sale story (page 68), and – thanks to the coastal panorama and evening sun – fell in love with his adopted homeland once again.

What constitutes the perfection vacation? Ideas vary widely. That’s why Munich-based luxury travel operator Berner Travel has specialized in turning clients’ wishes into individualized dream vacations. We spoke to company founder Christoph Berner. What distinguishes Berner Travel from other tourism companies?
We operate in the premium segment of the market and don’t offer off-the-shelf vacations. Each trip is planned individually. Depending on the wishes of the client, we organize the hotel, certainly, but also the desired hotel room. Our concierge services include reservations at restaurants, theater tickets, private shopping and food tours. We only offer experiences we can recommend ourselves. Does that mean that you have taken each one of these trips as well?
3 4
Before we offer a service, we always test it out ourselves to ensure it meets our high standards. What’s the biggest challenge in your industry? Some clients will give us a call the day before they want to go on a customized trip. Being able to respond requires speed and contacts in the right places. Which you naturally have … Thanks to our exclusive partnership agreements, we generally manage to put everything in place. We also work with local suppliers that are able to facilitate unique experiences, even at short notice. Our food guide in Osaka, for example, takes our guests through crazy Japanese markets and to authentic restaurants normally only frequented by local people, where meat is barbecued right at the table. Can you describe some of the impressive experiences you have or-
ganized? About ten years ago, we arranged a dinner on the helipad of the Burj Al Arab in Dubai. More recently we organized a private, Little Mermaid-themed birthday party in the Maldives, complete with costumes, music and so on. However, glitz and glamour are a bit 5 passé, time and nature are the real luxuries these days. Are your clients concerned about their ecological footprint?
Absolutely. People often specify that they’d like an eco-friendly hotel. Among the most popular is the Bawah Reserve in the South China Sea, which is committed to preserving nature and supporting local people. Another favorite is the S oneva Fushi in the Maldives, which creates luxury from simplicity: It boasts its own water filtration system, and lemongrass shower gel is dispensed from small earthenware pots. Plastics are banned. Which trip is an absolute must? Everybody should experience the infinite vastness of the Maasai Mara in Kenya in their lifetime. From June to September you can witness the great animal migrations there, which, in a certain way, represent the origins of life in Africa. And which trip left the most lasting impression on you? In terms of people’s hospitality, it was Mozambique. The people are incredibly cheerful and welcoming. When I feel stressed, my thoughts turn to the Kamalaya Resort, a wellness, yoga and detox retreat in the south of Koh Samui Island, Thailand.

few weeks left to spruce itself up for the season. In mid-April the first guests will arrive after the winter break, and a little later the craziest few weeks of the year will begin when the film festival gets underway. Then, in summer, the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc, where generations have come in search of retreat, will focus its thoughts on its big birthday and celebrate: 150 years that have seen it become a home away from home for many a guest. Perched on the southern tip of the Cap d’Antibes between Cannes and Nice, the hotel is the quintessence of timeless elegance. A creamy-white palace by the sea with dove-gray shutters. It’s the kind of place that takes your breath away – at the very latest when you walk through the lobby and the door opens onto the huge park. Standing at the top of the wide, dramatic marble staircase, you find yourself gazing down a long avenue at the glittering Mediterranean. The path is lined by 100-year-old pines and palms that cast photogenic shadows. The only sounds are the screaming of gulls and the plop of tennis balls making contact with the ground. There it is, spread out before you, the promise of vacation and carefree days, and it’s enough to stop even business moguls and studio bosses in their tracks: You want the moment to last forever. The park connects the main building with the Eden-Roc Pavilion, which was completed in 1914. The same year, the famous saltwater pool was blasted out of the rock with dynamite. Those who find the pool too crowded can opt for one of the private cabanas – little white huts right on the water’s edge. They’re not exactly cheap: Having your peace and quiet for the day will cost you more than €500 – as much as a very luxurious room elsewhere. But who wants to think about pesky numbers? Ordering another Bellini sounds like a much better idea. It’s not hard to find a waiter: The hotel employs more than two excellently trained members of staff per guest. Everything exudes an old-fashioned and very distinctive opulence. Since 1900, there’s even been a dog cemetery in the park – complete with miniature headstones; it’s right next to the rose garden. But there’s a condition for burial: The animal has to have died here. o now the famous hotel is about to turn 150. In celebration of this milestone birthday, it’s treating itself to a 300-page coffee table book: Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc: A Legend on the French R iviera, available from Amazon in May. The introduction was written by Graydon Carter: The long-serving editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair has known the hotel for decades. For many years, the parties he hosted here during the film festival were the most sought-after in town. In the summer months, it’s mostly only regulars who get to book a room at the Hôtel du Cap – preferably always the same one. Families from all over the world have been coming here for three or even four generations, often timing their stays to meet up with one another. Their children learn to swim here, and boisterous teenagers spend their days dangling from the ladders, swings and ropes the hotel has installed over the Mediterranean. In the evenings, everyone gets
t ogether on the roof of the pavilion to enjoy sunset at the champagne bar. It’s like looking out over the railings of a grand ocean steamer. he whole thing has the character of a private club. Some members of staff have been with the hotel for decades too, including Michel the porter and Giovanni the butler: Both of them have been working here for more than 40 years. And when the historical wood-paneled elevator takes you upstairs, you discover that the rooms are just as timeless as everything else. Subtle shades of gray on the walls, floral fabrics for the couches and curtains. Every day, fresh roses from the garden are placed on the bedside table. But while the hotel is historic, it’s nothing like a museum: It’s got too much joie de vivre for that. Take the cream-colored Fiat convertible from the 1950s that’s available to guests, for example, an original Autobianchi Bianchina “EdenRoc.” Brigitte Bardot drove one just like it. This particular model, which guests can borrow for an elegant spin, has bright-blue leather seats and puts you in a good mood as soon as you set eyes on it. In addition to the main house and the Eden-Roc Pavilion, the hotel complex also contains a residence called Les Deux Fontaines and two separate villas, each with its own pool. A third and considerably larger villa will be added in July, providing its occupants with 400 square meters of floor space. There are 118 rooms and suites in total, including the magnificent Eden-Roc Suite with its 250-square-meter roof terrace and sea view. The main house was built in 1870 by Hippolyte de Villemessant, the founder of French newspaper Le Figaro. He intended it to become a retreat for authors and journalists, a place that would help them come up with new ideas. But as sometimes happens with even the best of plans – it didn’t work out. By the time several other owners had tried their luck in vain, parts of the house had already fallen into disrepair. In 1887, it was bought by Italian Antoine Sella. He spent the next two years having it renovated. Then he opened the hotel and, with some masterly moves, succeeded in attracting the international jet set. Aristocrats and top Hollywood stars discovered the hotel’s charms. And today, every corner is like looking back through time: That’s where Kirk Douglas sat on the wharf, dangling his wooden water ski. This is where Marlene Dietrich lay reading, Fred Astaire liked to go for a stroll over there, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton used to fight right here, and the great producer Darryl F. Zanuck played cards with the Aga Khan in this very spot. Chagall always spent the month

the course of its long history. You sense that. And the managers here don’t come and go quickly either. Philippe Perd has been running the ship for more than 15 years. “It’s the guests who are responsible for the hotel’s mythical status,” he says. Perd has been director since 2005, when he took over the helm from Jean-Claude Irondelle. His predecessor had run the place for 35 years. Every winter, the influential hotelier travelled to New York and Los Angeles and hosted exclusive cocktail and dinner parties. The film studios thanked him by holding receptions at the Hôtel du Cap. Things were pretty strict under his auspices: Cell phones were banned at the pool and, according to the Wall Street Journal, Jacques Chirac wasn’t allowed into dinner one evening because he wasn’t wearing a tie. There were no TVs or minibars in the rooms – which is all the more shocking when you consider that, for the kind of luxury guests who stay here, it’s perfectly normal for even the bathroom to be fitted out with all manner of high-tech gadgets. Those who couldn’t stand the silence had to ask the butler to bring them a television set. And maybe a hairdryer while he was at it – that’s something else the rooms didn’t have. It was the dynamic Philippe Perd who brought the hotel into the present with his steady hand and delicate touch. 2007 saw the start of a four-year refurbishment program. But – and that was the trick – nobody was supposed to see it. At Perd’s urging, Maja Oetker eventually allowed TVs in all the rooms. And in April 2011, the hotel opened its
44
doors after a 67-million-dollar facelift. Minibars and big flatscreen TVs have been standard ever since. And you can pay by credit card these days too (until 2006, bills had to be settled in cash or by bank transfer). But there’s one thing that will never be introduced here: plastic cards for opening the rooms. At the Hôtel du Cap, the keys are made of brass, just like they’ve always been. Arrival by helicopter? Certainly not – Maja Oetker decided that years ago, believing the noise would be too disruptive. “We’re not nouveau riche. Anybody who doesn’t like it can go somewhere else,” she once said. She personally oversaw the design of every single room, choosing the furniture and paintings, selecting the fabrics and colors. “We’ve listened to our guests and their wishes very carefully in recent years,” said Philippe Perd when the renovations were finished. “The result is exactly what we set out to achieve: We’ve renovated the hotel so sensitively that it looks as if everything is just as it always was, only the details have changed.” nd in its own way, the Hôtel du Cap definitely does move with the times. “The new generation,” says Perd, “shares its experiences on Instagram. My loyal guests might not know much about that kind of thing – but their children certainly do.” He also knows exactly how many followers his hotel currently has: “Nearly 120,000. By the end of the year it will be 150,000.” While the film festival is taking place, the Promenade de la Croisette is packed with people. Which is why the most sought-after hotel during those weeks is not in Cannes itself but half an hour up the coast. Or five minutes by boat: The hotel has its own private landing stage, so it’s easy to reach by sea. Getting your hands on a room here at that time of year is difficult – and only possible at all if you book for all 12 nights of the festival. A good third of the rooms always goes to regulars: Even Hollywood stars like their routines. Since 2009, the amfAR Gala has been held at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in May as well, rather than up in the mountains above Cannes as it used to be. This move is Perd’s doing too, as is the limousine service that now meets any guest who stays for at least four nights at the airport. He has also brought threestar chef Éric Frechon on board as consulting chef: The hotel’s cuisine is aiming for new heights in this special anniversary year. Accordingly, both restaurants were gutted and completely redesigned during the winter break. “But we’ve preserved their DNA,” says Perd: Because the new look wasn’t to be too modern, the furnishings were specially designed for the purpose. “We’ve managed to build a subtle bridge between past and present.” In summer, two exclusive events will be held in celebration of the big birthday, each with 250 loyal guests. In keeping with the hotel’s character, they will take the form of elegant dinners rather than big parties at the pool. But Perd isn’t giving away any details – that would spoil the surprise. And the way he sees it, his guests deserve a big thank you. He’s had countless conversations with them, asking their views on colors and fabrics. “We’re not just any old five-star hotel, and we don’t want to become one – ever.” That means extreme caution is called for whenever changes are made. “Our long-standing guests don’t want their hotel to change. And in a way, you could say part of it belongs to them. The same way you can own a piece of paradise.”

of August here. The writer George Bernard Shaw was another regular, and could often be spotted carrying a conspicuously large parasol. Coco Chanel came here, as did John Lennon and Yoko Ono, the Kennedys and Churchill, Picasso and Hemingway. F. Scott Fitzgerald paid literary tribute to the hotel in his novel Tender is the Night. There are stories like the one about Gérard Depardieu and Robert De Niro having a shouting match by the pool because one didn’t invite the other to his birthday party. Or Johnny Weissmuller letting out his famous Tarzan call in the lobby. Bruce Willis once reserved a table for 30 and showed up with 300 people. And a few years ago, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and George Clooney were spotted playing cricket on the lawn one morning. There have been a few little scandals over the years too, of course: Kate Moss once trashed the hotel room she shared with Johnny Depp, and Lars von Trier pulled up to the hotel in a huge RV. But those were the sins of youth, and both are meanwhile welcome guests again. There are stories of a very different kind as well, like the one about the regular guests chipping in to help the family of a porter who’d had an accident. Since 1969, the hotel has belonged to the German industrialist family Oetker. Five years before purchasing it, Maja and Rudolf-August Oetker had discovered the property from the water while they were sailing in the area. They wanted to buy it right away, but it was too expensive. In the end, they got their hotel after promising the Sellas to preserve its spirit and not dismiss the staff. Today the hotel is part of the steadily growing Oetker Collection, which already owns nine unique grand hotels all over the world. They include Le Bristol in Paris, the Brenners ParkHotel in Baden-Baden and the Eden Rock in St. Barths.

Rendezvous in Paradise Elegance and a sense for nostalgia best describe the connection between Laura Bailey and the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc. The British model, photographer and Contributing Editor to British Vogue has been the Oetker Collection’s Creative Ambassador since 2018. INTERVIEW: Michaela Cordes How did the collaboration between you and the Oetker Collection come about? Well,
before I became an ambassador, I already considered myself a friend of the Group as a result of my travel journalism, through working on location and, of course, personal travels, but I’ve had a special connection to the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in particular for over 20 years … Did you use to come here as a child? Gosh, no – I wish I had! In those days it was more like I’d be camping 20 miles away from here! (She laughs).

Do you remember your very first visit to the hotel? Yes, I think I was 22 and came with a boyfriend. It was the beginning of my modelling career and I was traveling a lot for work, but I can honestly say I had never been somewhere like that before! It was very special and after my first visit, I began coming back for various differnt reasons – I did photo shoots here, I attended the Cannes Film Festival. More recently, I’ve celebrated birthdays with friends and family at the hotel. And when I’m here, I always feel I’m enjoying some of the luckiest moments of my life.
the family. Everyone knows my name, from the guy at the car park to the staff at the restaurant. It’s also important to me how a place makes me feel when I’m traveling alone – I actually love being here by myself. Spending the night at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc, I feel like a character in a movie. I think the Oetker Collection is the epitome of what we mean when we refer to class and style. Staying at the hotel transports you to a different another time, which is sometimes very welcome. You feel like you’re wrapped in a dream cocoon that you appreciate all the more because of the fast-paced, modern lives we lead when it comes to both work and family. It’s both an oasis and a retreat. … as if time had stopped entirely for a while? Yes, and you feel you are part of the current story and of history at the same time. I always run into unusual characters or friends from other lives at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc. I love that! And it doesn’t matter at all whether I’m by myself or in a group when that happens. The hotel is also an amazing gateway to a part of the world that I love and always find inspiring. From here, I o ften take a trip to Saint-Paul-de-Vence or Vence and pay a visit to the Matisse Chapel.

he view from the island hopper is a dream in turquoise. The
colors have an intensity that would radiate out even from a black and white photo. The sea is so limpid that the fish in it seem to be swimming through the air. Even the translucent anemone shrimp are quite easy to spot. Luckily, the beach is so glitteringly white that the pilot knows exactly where to land. So after a twelve-hour trip from Europe, we finally arrive at a wooden hut and are greeted by Jeannette Cadet’s friendly hug. The 71-year-old islander has been welcoming visitors to Mustique for more than 30 years – Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Bill Gates, the Royals – and also knew Princess Margaret well. “She used to call from London to enquire: ‘Is my house de-scorpionized?’” Jeanette likes greeting her guests with a little joke: “I’m afraid we’ve been having terrible weather since yesterday.” Laughing, she serves us a drink of iced water. It’s 28 degrees Celsius and we make our way in a golf cart from one hill to another, along bumpy paths and through a well kept tropical forest. The houses in it – some of them enormous properties – are hardly visible. Only the driveways and hedges give an indication of their splendor. Fifteen billionaires own vacation homes in Mustique, the total number of private villas is 105. Most of these can be rented by visitors and used as though they were private house guests. You shower, dream and live in the sanctuaries of industrialists and creative geniuses from around the world whose wealth was inherited or earned. You do not even need a key. The houses are not locked and the staff welcome you at the door. Thirty-seven security guards keep watch over the island, and there is an arrivals list. Before guests even land, management know who they are, what they do and whether they are in trouble with a bank or a government. Mustique boasts two hotels, two beach cafés and two bars, but the majority of socializing is done in private. The people who reside behind those hedges have known each other for ages. Everyone knows who lives in which house, so there’s no need for street signs. It’s like an exclusive private club. People here enjoy being part of this elite community and take steps to keep it unique. Money talks, wealth whispers. t all started with Colin Tennant, the 3rd Baron Glenconner, in 1958. The eccentric son of an English large landowner sailed past the island on his way back from Trinidad. At the time, there was nothing in Mustique but cotton plants, coconuts and mosquitoes. He fell in love with the shrub-covered island and purchased it for £45,000. The cotton was made into pajamas, which he had a hard time selling in London, though. This gave him the idea of livening up the island by giving away plots of land to his friends and asking them to bring their entourages – but only the good-looking ones! Princess Margaret was among the first. “Would you like an Asprey cocktail shaker or a piece of Mustique?” he asked his friend when she was getting married to Lord Snowdon in 1960. The Princess summed up her first impressions of the island, gained from her yacht during her honeymoon, with characteristic frankness: She was disappointed. “It looked like Kenya, burnt to a frazzle. We drove down a path, the only road, and sat in the brush swatting mosquitoes. It was only really bearable underwater.” Colin’s parties, however, were riotous and legendary, so rock stars, bohemians and aristocrats made their way to the island that is the stuff of legends to this day. Roger Pritchard is sitting in his office. The Briton is a master relationship builder. Urbane and discreet, he is not one to betray any
I
confidences. “Ah, good old Colin,” he laughs gruffly, sipping his breakfast tea. “He was not just the founder of Mustique, but also shaped it with his personality. However, he wasn’t a skilled financier or businessman.” When a road needed to be built, he sold one of his paintings. The food supply chain was chaotic. When the female guests blow-dried their hair while getting ready for cocktail hour, there would be a blackout and the whole island would be plunged into darkness. At some point, people had had enough and demanded decent management. This led – fifty years ago – to the founding of the Mustique Company, which is today headed by Roger Pritchard. is job is to take Mustique into the future, to preserve its charm while helping it evolve. And to open it up to the next generation, to a new clientele, because times are changing. It is a balancing act. As the Prince of Lampedusa wrote in his book The Leopard: “Everything must change so that everything can stay the same.” So who will be a part of tomorrow’s Mustique? Soccer champions, young fashionistas or Silicon Valley techies? Maybe the Kardashians, Middle Eastern or Chinese business people or astronauts? It’s all about choosing wisely, as the island’s balance is easily disturbed. Roger says: “You must curate carefully.” Imelda Marcos once wanted to buy a property here – and was rejected. Attempts by Roman Abramovich to acquire the villa Great House formerly owned by the late Lord Glenconner (and now the property of fashion tycoon Lawrence Stroll) also failed, even after the Russian oligarch doubled his offer. They are trying to preserve the old spirit. Forty percent of owners are British, with the rest made up of Americans, Venezuelans, Italians and Swiss, as well as three German families. “We wouldn’t mind a broader mix or even a larger number of visitors throughout the year,” Roger says. The villa owners are always looking for tenants. “Inflation,” he mutters. A young entrepreneur from a small European country who has asked for his name to be withheld is cooling down with a “Mustique Mule” in a silver mug on his spacious white patio. “We have been coming here for years. From Christmas to New Year’s Day, our house is cozily occupied by twelve people, friends and family. But the rest of the time it’s empty. The humidity damages the furniture, the upholstery gets musty and the staff are out of work.” Just one overnight stay will set you back roughly 2,000 euros. His wife points out that they are selective with their guests: “Once we had these hedge fund people staying here. One of them immediately threw a party for 200 people and our sofas ended up covered in sunscreen and banana chips. Sure, at this daily rate, you probably can’t be too sensitive, but you should at least be able to expect some manners.” These are island worries, it’s not easy pleasing everybody. The “newer people,” as Roger calls them, want action, sushi, shops, clubs, golf and ample lighting in the forest. Others don’t want any changes at all. “I wouldn’t rule out anything off hand,” says the boss. One thing is for certain, though: “Private jets will only land here over my dead body. I don’t want the noise. On top of that, who knows what or who they’d bring onto the island.” Tourists can book a room in the Cotton House hotel or simply in one of the 84 houses that are available for rent. Everything is big at the villa Palm Beach, which is owned by designer Tommy Hilfiger: It has gigantic beds in huge bedrooms that boast panoramic views of the vast ocean at L’Ansecoy Bay. The Plantation House (always rented by Tom Ford) has patios as big as ballrooms, and its pool seems to merge with the sea behind it. In Patrick Lichfield’s villa Obsidian, designed in the typical gingerbread colonial style inspired by stage designer Oliver Messel, there’s lots of wicker furniture. In Les Jolies Eaux, Princess Margaret’s former residence, all the interiors used to be peach-colored. Continued on page 146 – Mustique

coral breeders who are working to save the reefs. Mustique attaches great importance to preserving the environment (the golf carts in which people move around the island are all battery powered). You can take a dip in the sea on horseback, followed by tennis and cricket, of course. Doing yoga – I was told – is especially effective at dawn when the white ginger lilies open up and emit their scent. Alternatively, you could prepare your tax returns. After all, if the weather is good, anything is fun. Lunches, picnics, cocktail hours and dinners all blend into one. You will need few clothes – anything that flutters in the breeze, glitters, and looks cool and effortless. Leave your Manolo Blahniks at home but invest in a decent pedicure, because people here even go to dinner barefoot. And then, there are local traditions like the nude race along the runway on New Year’s Eve. At the end of your stay, you’ll be surprised at the cost of your stint as a luxury castaway. At least it’s less pricey than St. Barts, they say. The fascinating thing here – apart from the flora and fauna – is the number of VIPs per square mile: department store heirs, fertilizer manufactures, owners of racing stables. The minute you land, you practically share a table with them. Mick Jagger is a regular. Did you know that his dog’s name is Guinness? Sadly, there was no sign of the rock star, but his panting pooch was very much in evidence.

Today the house with its panoramic views of the Atlantic and the Caribbean is owned by Americans. Those who wish to purchase a house need to know that villas on Mustique only change hands because of the three “Ds”: death, debt and divorce. Eight properties are currently for sale, for example the Hummingbird, a bungalow designed by architect Paolo Piva. The owner is a scion of the Sainsbury’s supermarket family, and $28 million will get you the keys to the place. Each villa comes with a private butler (like Tony, who used to work for David Bowie), who will be delighted to remind you repeatedly about your upcoming tennis lesson. This is necessary because, as you will quickly realize, being happy makes you forgetful. The only thing you want to do is eat, drink, sleep and go snorkeling. The butlers also memorize and even anticipate guest requests, in order to fulfill them promptly and discreetly. As though it was the most natural thing in the world, a giant bunch of dill will suddenly appear on your pillow, just because you mentioned in passing that you were missing the scent of the herb. On Mustique, you start your day doing nothing in particular. You have some mediocre tea, marvel at a hummingbird and check who is arriving, who is already here and who is leaving the island. Maybe you’ll do some diving among the sea turtles or pay a visit to the

homas Heatherwick is famous for daring to try new things. Be it in design, by coming up with a more organic form for London’s double-decker buses, or in architecture, by making plants an integral part of his concepts. The “1000 Trees” project in Shanghai is a prime example. The Brit d esigned two mountain-like building complexes for the city. The site is bordered by a public park on one side and concrete towers everywhere else. The more than 300,000 square meters of developed space – the equivalent of more than 40 soccer fields – are home to shops, offices, galleries, restaurants and event locations. The fact that the huge complex doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to a concrete desert is thanks to the presence of 1,000 different trees and plants. They grow in huge planters on gigantic columns that were integrated into the structure of the building and seem to grow out of it. Besides its spectacular appearance, the greenery performs two other important functions: It cools the building and captures carbon.
