NOTE FROM OUR PUBLISHER

Project Manager /Editor

s I sit down to write my publisher’s letter for this A issue of Getaway Reno/Tahoe, I was hoping to avoid the current buzzwords: unprecedented, difficult times, new normal. Now that I’m typing, I think that will probably be impossible.

This issue is anything but normal, just like the year 2020. The timing of the lock downs, quarantines and business closures made our Spring 2020 issue obsolete before we could even distribute it. Our main focus tends to be telling visitors about all the great things our region has to offer. This time it’s different. Like so many other businesses around the world, we must pivot and be proactive, not reactive, to the new reality we all face. We knew the traditional efforts promoting the area, our partners, clients and customers was impractical, at least for the time being. We quickly shifted gears in our effort to appeal to our large audience of online followers. We launched getVIRTUAL, a brand new show with the goal to amplify resilient local stories and inspire community connectedness, virtually. getVIRTUAL can be found on YouTube, Facebook and IGTV, as well as our newly redesigned website planmygetaway.com. During the last few months, through getVIRTUAL and our continued involvement in the community, we witnessed so many amazing stories of kindness, strength and resilience. The stories of positivity despite many obstacles inspired us greatly. This issue is dedicated to the “Star Navigators” (pg. 36) who have risen to the occasion to bring a sense of hope and continue making our community so amazing. As you read this publication, our hope is that you are moved by the “Star Navigators” and show your support for their efforts. We encourage you to post about it and tag us @getawayrenotahoe and @ getawyrt. Keep an eye out for our giveaways and prize packages. Feel free visit our YouTube channel @getawayrenotahoe to preview the videos and past getVIRTUAL episodes. All of our issues can be downloaded and taken with you on issuu.com or the issuu mobile app, just search for Getaway Reno/ Tahoe. PROTEST B

By Oliver X

lack Lives Matter. That strident, self-evident declaration that burst onto our consciousness after Michael Brown’s killing in Ferguson, has spawned a global justice movement to end racial discrimination, shining a torchlight on the inequities of a nation yearning to embody its creed: indivisible. From the midnight lynching of Mexican “desperado” Luis Ortiz on the Virginia Street Bridge, by 70 masked members of the 601 Vigilance Committee in 1891, to the current protest actions in the Newlands Park district of Old Southwest Reno, Reno’s racist racial history is coming under closer scrutiny. One of civilization’s most cogent communication tools — art — is being used as an instrument of peaceful protest and change.

K IDS IN C AGES If you’ve walked along the streets of downtown or Midtown Reno, you have undoubtedly seen the vivid art of the Mexico City-raised artist Edwin Martinez Esco. The U.S. Navy veteran creates vibrant murals and paintings depicting historical figures from his native Mexico, like Pancho Villa, Zapata and Frida Kahlo, that dot the Reno wallscape. His unique style is instantly recognizable and his messages unmistakable. In one particularly incendiary piece titled “My Heart Goes Out To You,” Esco shows a Mexican immigrant child, separated from parents, clutching detention fencing, with huge, mournful eyes. The emotional impact of this piece 10 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

is instantaneous. I teared up upon seeing it, imagining the terror and helplessness thousands of children are facing at our southern borders. “’My Heart Goes Out To You’ is for the families getting torn apart; kids separated from their loved ones and getting treated inhumanely by being put in cages, like criminals … As an immigrant, dreamer and veteran, it hits home,” Esco emphasizes.

A RT SPEA K S The 24-hour art action Art Speaks, held this summer during Artown and created by a racially diverse group of Reno residents, showcased the powerful social impact of art. The art action used life-sized “humanoid canvases” of RACE, INCLUSION and HEALING created by imagination maven and artistic scientist Sharon DeMattia. They were lit day and night during the peaceful park protest. Art Speaks grew out of the rancorous Newlands Park renaming controversy. At issue, the call by residents of color and conscience for the removal of the monument celebrating Nevada U.S. Senator Francis G. Newlands, the Mississippi-born attorney turned politician, and avowed white supremacist. Known for his bitter opposition to the 15th Amendment, for favoring whites-only immigration, and for the Newlands Resolution of 1898, which annexed the Republic of Hawai’i, Newlands was a prolific developer

who helped pioneer the exclusion of blacks and Jews from Reno’s most desirable early neighborhoods. But the legacy of entitlement, exclusion, and willful denial of the deleterious effects of discrimination linger, and a core group of Newlands residents are raising their voices against it. “Reno, like any city, tells the world about itself through the people that it chooses to memorialize,” said Newlands resident Bin Bin Erwin, one of the organizers of the campaign to rename the park, and remove the monument to Newlands. “We are confident that the people of Reno do not wish to venerate a man who was viewed as a mean-spirited white supremacist even in his own era.” Old Southwest resident and event co-organizer Khalilah Cage, notes that “homeowners who wish to fight the racist and exclusionary language still found in homeowner deed covenants in dozens of neighborhoods in Reno, can fill out a Declaration of Removal of Discriminatory Restriction. SB117, sponsored by Nevada Senators Julia Ratti and Dallas Harris, and Assemblywoman Lisa Krasner, went into effect October 1, 2019.

“The enduring language of segregation and discrimination sends an outdated and harmful message to our community,” says Washoe County Recorder Kaley Work, writing in a press release last year announcing the bill.

BLACK LI V ES M AT TER MUR A L Placed at Reno City Hall in the aftermath of the depraved and indifferent torture, leading to the death of George Floyd at the hands of four Minneapolis police officers, Reno muralist Joe C. Rock’s temporary Black Lives Matter mural is a visual narrative of the seldom-referenced history of the civil rights struggle in Reno. Speaking on location to Geralda Miller of Art Spot Reno during a summer special titled “Loud As Folk: A Fist Full of Murals, Rock” she states, his five-panel installation with two huge words “Equality” and “Unity” framing a central piece with the words “Black Lives Matter” on it, was placed on the boarded-up remnants of the post-riot damage to City Hall. After conversations with Special Events Manager Alexis Hill and Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve, Rock told them “If you wanna let me run with it and do it, let’s go ahead ... And it got going,” Rock relates. “It

took a lot of heartache and struggle, but we’re here now,” says Rock. The artist is referencing the cold feet certain members of the Reno City Council reportedly later expressed over the mural, and the harassment Rock experienced from the Reno Police Department during his nightly 3 a.m. work sessions on the piece. Rock was stopped and questioned a half-dozen times during his attempts to complete the mural by the RPD, who claimed he needed a permit to do the mural. Depicted prominently in the mural is Reno racial justice warrior Alice Smith. Smith helped integrate Reno’s VA Hospital, after her veteran husband, Alfred, was denied care due to his race. “Bertha Woodard is shown picketing the downtown Reno Woolworth’s during the 1960 NAACP protest,” notes Miller. Amongst the many noteworthy national figures past and present included: a kneeling Colin Kaepernick; Rosa Parks’ Montgomery Bus Boycott mugshot, and George Floyd, whose murder, like that of 14 year-old Emmitt Till’s 66 years earlier, reignited a national movement for racial justice and equality that is 400 years overdue. Public art acts as a living commentary of our times and can be a conduit for activism, action, and a restoration of faith, as it moves our spirits and enlightens our minds. Art Spot Reno is dedicated to the exploration and celebration of public art in northern Nevada, and the many murals that beautify our region’s wallscapes. For those touring the Reno/Sparks area, you will find a great number of intricate and meaningful murals and structures that tell the story of a vibrant and diverse community. These creations are a reminder of the power of art to engage, inform and inspire. For information on touring art murals visit artspotreno.com.

ADVENTURE

GO PARKING Explore California and Nevada state parks this summer. By Annie Flanzraich

16 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

Photo this page: Jeramie Lu

During the warmer months in the Reno/Tahoe area, my favorite activities happen outside. Hiking, camping, swimming, exploring, adventuring and lounging are best experienced with sunshine, fresh air, friends and a hefty dose of SPF. This year, masks may be required, too. State parks can be an epicenter for all of the above, and luckily more than 20 parks are a 45-minute drive or less from Reno. Here are my favorite seven to visit.

Emerald Bay State Park With its iconic and highly photographed lookout point, Emerald Bay State Park is probably the first place that comes to mind when people hear the words “Lake Tahoe.” During the summer, expect to see crowds of people ready to hike and explore the park located on Lake Tahoe’s west shore. While taking a selfie on the scenic overlook on Highway 89 is one way to experience Emerald Bay, try hiking a few miles down to Vikingsholm, a replica of a Scandinavian castle. Outside architectural and history tours take place daily. If you’ve already visited Vikingsholm, expand your exploration to The Underwater Park, located on the north shore of Emerald Bay. There, divers can see boats, launches, barges and a variety of artifacts from Emerald Bay Resort that are now submerged. sierrastateparks.org/emerald-bay-state-park

D.L. Bliss State Park Just a few miles north of Emerald Bay is D.L. Bliss State Park, a 1,830-acre mountain wonderland. For an unparalleled view of Lake Tahoe, hike to the north end of the park to find Rubicon Point, where you can see more than 100 feet into the depths of the lake. For more dramatic views, take a day to explore the Rubicon Trail, which stretches from Lester Beach at D.L. Bliss State Park to Eagle Point Campground at Emerald Bay State Park. In the northwest section of the park, you can find a short, half-mile self-guided nature trail that will take you to the Balancing Rock. This 130-ton block of granite rests precariously on a narrow stone base and has been a favorite photography spot since the late 1800s. sierrastateparks.org/d-l-bliss-state-park

Ed Z’Berg Sugar Pine Point State Park Also located on the West Shore, Ed Z’Berg Sugar Pine Point State Park is another local favorite — but just call it Sugar Pine for short. The park includes a historic estate, the tallest pine trees in the world and great hiking trails. The park's nearly two miles of lakefront feature dense forests of pine, fir, aspen and juniper. During the summer, you can find a variety of interpretive activities including campfire programs, nature hikes, and junior ranger programs. Don’t miss taking a tour of the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion, a beautiful summer home built in 1903, or visiting the Nature Center to view

Photo this page: Jeramie Lu

several exhibits about Lake Tahoe's bird life biology, lake ecology, wildflowers and trees. sierrastateparks.org/sugar-pine-point-state-park-ehrman-mansion/

Sand Harbor On Lake Tahoe’s north shore, about 20 minutes from Incline Village, sits Sand Harbor’s crystal-clear waters and unusual rock formations. At this state park, you’ll find smooth, sandy beaches, boat launches and picnic sites. It’s easy to find many ways to spend the day at Sand Harbor, whether you’re swimming, kayaking, scuba diving, boating, picnicking or beaching. parks.nv.gov/parks/lake-tahoe-nevada-state-park

Spooner Lake & Back Country As you drive up to Lake Tahoe from Carson City on Highway 50, you’ll see Spooner Lake and part of the Spooner Backcountry, a more-than-12,000-acre area of forested, open space. This park features 50 miles of hiking, equestrian and mountain biking trails and primitive roads. Some of the most popular trails are the Marlette, Red House, Flume and Tahoe Rim Trails. Spooner Lake is also a great place to make camp and extend your exploration. Camping is allowed in three primitive, walk-in campgrounds: Marlette Peak, Hobart and North Canyon. There's also hunting and fishing at Spooner Lake, Marlette Lake and Hobart Reservoir. parks.nv.gov/parks/lake-tahoe-nevadastate-park-1

Mormon Station Take a step back in time and visit Mormon Station, located in the historic town of Genoa, about 25 minutes south of Carson City. This state park is the site of Nevada’s first permanent, non-native settlement. Today, the park is home to a reconstructed version of the original 1851 trading post that burned down in 1910 and a museum with original pioneer-era artifacts. parks.nv.gov/parks/mormon-station

Washoe Lake State Park Feel the majesty of the scenic valley between Reno and Carson City at Washoe Lake State Park. There, you’ll find stunning views of the Nevada, Carson and Virginia mountain ranges, punctuated by soaring bald eagles. This is a favorite area for hiking, camping, picnicking, water sports and equestrian activities. You can also find a diverse range of birds and waterfowl, such as American white pelicans and Canadian geese. Those who like to fish can catch channel and bullhead catfish, wipers, white bass and Sacramento Perch. parks.nv.gov/parks/washoe-lake With a variety of settings and activities, the state parks in northern Nevada and California are some of the best places to experience the Sierra. So, get out there and explore.

ADVENTURE

GOLFING DELIGHT Picture-perfect views, a challenging course and entertainment await at Lake Tahoe Golf Course. By Richard “Dickie” Peraldo

A

n avid golfer for most of my life, I like golf courses that test my game and mesmerize my mind with outstanding views. Lake Tahoe Golf Course not only achieves this goal, it exceeded all my expectations. Approaching the first tee, you’re smacked in the face with 360degree views. Step up to the tee box with driver in hand and you’ll be staring at Dick’s Peak and Mt. Tallac. This is a sure sign for a spectacular day. Hole 6 is my favorite hole, not because it was my first birdie the last time I golfed the course, but rather for it’s beauty. The Upper Truckee River flows freely right in front of you on the tee box and then again on the green. Just listening to the river not only calmed my nerves, it made my jaw drop. This was a special hole. Many courses have one side or a few holes with great views, but after making the turn to the back nine you’ll realize it’s not the case here. Standing on the tenth tee, after an extraordinary front nine, the lush green fairway meets sky-high snow-capped mountains. I knew the back nine was going to treat me just right with great golf and even greater views. The heart of the back nine includes even more holes with the Upper Truckee River not only for my viewing pleasure but also in play! One time, I was on the green reading my putt to save 18 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

par and two kayakers floated by absolutely immersed in their day. 18 HOLES AND THEN SOME As much as I love the views, I also enjoy the challenge this course offers. The front nine are very open with a grip it and rip it like a young Tiger Woods feel, minus the 50+ yards of course. The back nine is a little bit more target golf, a risk/reward-type vibe. The driver still makes it out of my bag, but there are a few holes where an iron off the tee works just fine. With three different tee boxes and water coming into play on 13 holes, this course will be a challenge for any skill level. Lake Tahoe Golf Course is more than just golf and views, its ability to entertain is second to none. From weddings to banquets to bachelor parties (which I witnessed firsthand), this place is about fun. They have an amazing snack bar, a great bar (with their signature drink, the Happier Gilmore), a snazzy dance floor, and an unbelievably friendly staff. Lake Tahoe Golf Course is a reasonably priced showstopper. The golf is amazing, the views are to die for and they offer entertainment like no other. Sitting here on the patio enjoying the views and a Happier Gilmore after 18 holes, you’ll agree life doesn’t get any better than this. laketahoegc.com Photos this page: Jeramie Lu

FUN ALL-WEATHER By Natasha Bourlin

EXCITING ACTIVITIES NO MATTER THE CLIMATE. In Reno/Tahoe, you never know what the weather might bring. It can be 80 degrees one day, then snow the next. Sometimes that happens in the same day. So, do you hunker down at home and wait to see the sunlight, bundle up and tackle the temperatures, or plan to do something weatherproof indoors? Don’t let the seasons rule your fun, here are some entertaining options for all ages, no matter the weather. If you’ve always wanted to visit Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, Kimmie Candy Factory is the next best thing. Be sure to enjoy a delectable treat made locally and check their website for available activities onsite. kimmiecandy.com In Carson City, the Nevada State Museum takes visitors on a tour of state history going back to times when mammoths roamed the Great Basin. There’s even a skeletal display of a mammoth found in the Black Rock Desert. Other permanent exhibits include a tour of an underground mine, and a reconstructed cave illustrating how the first humans in Nevada lived. Bring the kids and show them where coins were created in the late1800s at the original Carson City mint. nvculture.org

Outdoor dining and curbside in these unconventional times. By Rae Matthews, Elevation Eats

Dining dilemmas have been no small thing these past few months. Restaurateurs are torn between safe service for themselves and their customers and, well, staying in business. So how have some of our favorite eats persevered through these tough times? Part inspiration, part perspiration, and whole lot of take-out. Since we’ve all got to eat, here are the places to dine out during apocalypse 2020.

Fresh air al fresco Indoor dining may not always be an option (or something you’re comfortable with), so we recommend breathing in the fresh Reno/Tahoe air by dining al fresco. Here are some of the best patios to choose from. Artemis Mediterranean Grill serves Greek fair at two locations in South Lake Tahoe, both with patios, and the Ski Run location is right by the marina. Also in South Lake Tahoe, the Scottish pub, Macduff ’s Public House has a large outdoor patio and an outdoor bar. And if you cross the metaphorical Giant’s Causeway to the Irish pub, McP’s Taphouse Grill, you’ll find a huge patio overlooking the California state border — and, get ready, because you may just be serenaded by a Scottish bagpiper. (On the Irish side? We know. Just roll with it.) Fox and Hound boasts the highest elevation on this list. Situated at the top of Kingsbury Grade, their deck is nestled next to the Heavenly mountain top. Speaking of views and true to its name, Wild River Grille in Reno has a large patio astride the Truckee River, where you can dine to the sound of rapids. If you would just rather handle your own food, check out Pignic Pub & Patio in Reno, where you can pack in a meal, use their barbecues, lounge on their patio, and enjoy their beer. It’s like going to friend’s house. artemismediterraneangrill.com, macduffspub.com, mcpstahoe.net, foxandhoundtahoe.com, wildrivergrille.com, pignicpubandpatio.com

Kick it to the curb If staying secluded is more your speed, then here are great places to grab and go. When is a fresh deli sandwich ever not a good idea? Yosh’s Deli provides some of the best sandwiches in Reno, and they already have this to-go thing dialed. Also in Reno, Twisted Fork has made safety a top priority. They offer great Americana cuisine and peace of mind. Mangia Tutto Pizzeria e Ristorante in Carson has jumped on the GrubHub train, making way for both takeout and delivery of their Chicago-style pizza. And for some of the best pizza in South Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe AleWorX’s location at “the Y” has the best of both worlds, a large patio and curbside pick-up. And finally, a new addition to the South Lake Tahoe food scene, Frescana Mexican Bistro, whose cheeky motto is “annoyingly fresh,” brings some of the best Mexican food around to the curb. yoshsdeli.com, twistedforkreno.com, mangiatuttopizzeria.com, laketahoealeworx.com, frescanalaketahoe.com Remember, safety is always a priority, and no one wants to catch “the ‘rona.” Please show your support while respecting the safety precautions that restaurants ask of you. Local meat master shares barbecuing tips. By Natasha Bourlin

When his parents opened South Lake Tahoe’s Overland Meat and Seafood Company in 1987, current owner Brian Cohen never imagined he’d be taking over the business 18 years later. As most tend to do, his parents wanted to retire and Cohen saw an entrepreneurial opportunity. Come 2005, Cohen left his job at a grocery store to carry on the butchering legacy. He kept the business afloat despite extraordinarily hard times including tragic fires and recessions. He turned it into a thriving go-to spot for Tahoe residents seeking quality meats, seafoods and more. “We specialize in filling a void that grocery stores here have left and offering items not found anywhere else,” Cohen says. “Offering the best quality and fresh items is what we strive for. You get what you pay for. You can buy cheaper products, but you can’t buy better.” Meeting customer demands for quality over quantity is a daily duty for Cohen and his team. The full-service meat market carries a consistent selection of meats with no hormones, antibiotics or animal by-products, plus fresh seafood, organic, free-range poultry and many other complementary products. For the past 11 years, they’ve overnighted fresh fish from Hawaii, bringing a weekly dose of the Pacific Ocean to Tahoe. Now, nearly every Friday when the seafood is sold, lines of fish-fancying customers eagerly await the aquatic Hawaiian harvest. They also offer fresh wild cod on Tuesdays and Fridays, plus popular, housemade poke bowls.

Get grilling With barbecue season in full swing, take some tips from a meat master. Cohen says it’s crucial to let steaks warm up to room temperature before cooking, so place them on the counter for one-to-two hours before they hit the grill. 26 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

One of the most important guidelines for any grill chef is to only flip your meat, poultry or fish once. Every time you flip it, juices are expelled. Then, test the temperature with a meat thermometer, but never cut into it to check if it’s done — you’ll just let all those precious juices out. Instead, let it rest after taking it off the grill for about 20 minutes to let the juices set up within the meat properly, creating mouthwatering results. As for spices, a high-grade piece of meat should be tasted in its full glory, so he recommends only a sprinkling of salt and pepper prior to cooking. Should you want a bit more flavor, Overland Meat and Seafood Company is stocked with tried and true seasonings that work well with the items they sell.

When the house musician who is also an ICU nurse inside the COVID-19 sector in an area hospital told Kaya and Kevin Stanley, owners of Old Granite Street Eatery and Rue Bourbon in Reno, that they were not stopping to eat during their shifts, they had an immediate question: Can we bring you food?

Fast forward eight weeks and a collaboration with Rounds 4 Heroes (another effort providing meals for healthcare workers organized by Dr. James Lynch with SpineNevada in Reno) resulted in over 26,000 meals delivered to local hospitals and testing centers; nearly 1,600 complimentary meals for first responders; and, donations to over 1,000 families of essential workers receiving childcare from Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. “When we started this, we had no idea it would grow to be so big but we knew we had to make a difference,” Kaya explains. “Even in the beginning, we were blown away by the support and monetary donations from the community. In total, we raised over $200,000 and all of that went back to area restaurants and businesses that helped in the effort.” With the inception of Feed Our Heroes, the Stanleys made a truly selfless choice that I admire greatly. When faced with keeping the proceeds for themselves and their businesses, they decided it was best to also help fellow restaurateurs.

KAYA & KEVIN STANLEY By Heidi Bethel

“Independently owned restaurants have been some of the hardest hit businesses through all of this,” Kaya adds. “We were able to be part of a movement to help them so much and it was really an honor.” Feed Our Heroes paid $10 for each meal delivered and helped dozens of area eateries. The couple hopes the ripple effect meant food on the tables for the restaurant workers and their families. “Looking back, we wouldn’t change a thing. And, during times of need, we know now that if we focus on the need and how we can fill it, it will get us through those times, too,” she says. STAR NAVIGATOR - JUDE WOOD

SPECIAL FEATURE

During tough times, it’s important that communities come together. Star Navigators are community leaders that shine a light on a better, kinder future. Jude Wood is the executive director for the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, located in South Lake Tahoe. She has been in that position for six years and is a wearer of many hats, including, these days, “chief temperature taker.” After the shutdown in March, Boys and Girls Club dedicated itself to feeding the South Lake Tahoe community. “The key was our free supper program,” Wood notes. “We were lucky to have amazing support from Vail, the restaurants and casinos, who donated their perishable items, and within a week we were up and running a free, drive-thru, to-go, hot supper. We went with supper as Lake Tahoe Unified School District was doing great work providing lunches and we already had a State [of California] agreement to provide suppers during that time frame. Between March 23 and June 22, we gave out over 7000 free meals.” Wood knew that providing meals went a long way toward helping unemployed families focus on paying bills. She said the experience was very rewarding. “There were so many incredible moments,” Wood explains, “I can't thank the community enough for the support that we received. From Lakeside opening their kitchen to us and saying, 'Take what you want!' to donations arriving in the mail with the instructions to 'feed the kids;' the Gomez family holding fundraisers on our behalf; Harumi Sushi making over 100 rolls for us to give out; the mom who cried when I gave her money to buy groceries; the non-Club kids who we got to know; and, my staff, who rolled up their sleeves, turned up each day to cook, and threw their heart and soul into everything I asked of them. My heart will be eternally grateful.”

JUDE WOOD By Rae Matthews, Elevation Eats

Wood reminds us, “Be kind and think community before self.” She believes leadership with compassion is critical in shaping the next generation. Thank you, Jude, for leading the way! You can support the efforts of the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe by joining Team AWESOME. Wood adds, “Any amount helps, but donations over $25 earns you a sweet pair of Team AWESOME socks!” For more information and to make a donation, visit bgclt.org.

Jeffrey wears a wide smile, stylish hat and darkframed glasses. Like a landscape artist who belongs painting under a seaside sunset, Jeffrey seems to belong on Bently Heritage’s high desert ranch. His canvas is an empty rocks glass that’s begging for a swirling of his new creation. In March, current events forced the halt of liquor production. What do artists and makers do when their canvases are out of reach? If it were me, I’d opt to indulge in a glass of Sierra Nevada-sourced gin to smooth over these strange times. The Bently Heritage team realized while we may have enough liquor to last for a while, the community was really in need of ways to stay healthy. So, Jeffrey and his team redirected their creative spirits from distilling liquor to distilling hand sanitizer. To date, they have donated over 4000 gallons of their Nevada-made hand sanitizer to the region’s law enforcement agencies, first responders and hospitals. “We want to support our community. In the same way that Bently Heritage pulled together to do our part, it’s important for everyone in the community to pull together. In a time like this, we need to love, reach out and take care of each other.” Jeffrey says.

STAR NAVIGATOR - MARK ESTEE

SPECIAL FEATURE

Decades ago, chef and restaurateur Mark Estee entered into the culinary world. A rising star based in Reno, the Massachusetts native and James Beard Award semifinalist has flourished through years of private catering gigs, multi-restaurant ownership, spearheading community movements to help those in need … and, now, a new show on the Food Network. Estee acknowledges that a whole new era is upon us all. One in which fear of a pandemic now dictates many of our habits. How has he and his multitude of teams running his various endeavors adapted? Diligently.

MARK ESTEE By Natasha Bourlin

When re-opening his havens of cuisine — Liberty Food & Wine Exchange, The Union, chez louie, Overland Restaurant & Pub and Cucina Lupo — he held off another eight days from when the go-ahead was given so that he could properly and extensively train his staff. A COVID-19-ridden world was new territory. “Everyone got extra training, including understanding that the customers were going to be just as scared as we were,” Estee says. “The customers needed to be re-trained also.” In the midst of the restaurant and bar shut-down, he found ways to answer needs in the community. In partnership with a nationwide food distribution company, he started the HIP NV program, which provided relief for low-income and out-of-work hospitality and service workers. Along with Nevada’s Lieutenant Governor Kate Marshall,

the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra, and other area partners, the Vegasborn Delivering with Dignity (DID) program was launched in northern Nevada in May 2020. So far, approximately 140 DID volunteers have delivered fresh and hot meals to more than 16,000 locals. The program also assists the hard-hit restaurant industry by providing eateries with added income through the program. As if running several restaurants and helping with community efforts wasn’t enough, Estee has spent the past few years working with Cakehouse Media on a production concept and show pilot that was recently picked up and aired on Food Network. In Undercover Chef, Estee dives into the business practices of restaurants across the country to identify their trouble spots and help them thrive. Future episodes are being scheduled. As a community leader and nationally recognized personality in the restaurant industry, Estee asks readers interested in helping those adversely effected by COVID-19 to support DID through donations, raising awareness of the program or volunteering. Other tips for all when trying to move forward during challenging moments? “Give everyone grace, mercy and understanding,” Estee shares. “We need to treat everyone with respect and we’ll get through this.” For more information on HIP NV, visit nevadahip.com

STAR NAVIGATOR - OLIVER X

SPECIAL FEATURE

The COVID-19 outbreak left us grieving for a life that once was. The buzzing, the vibrations, the electricity of July downtown. We craved sunshine on our faces and laughter in the park during this celebratory season. We were left yearning imagination, interaction, and feeling that summer warmth with our friends and our community. This year also marked the 25th anniversary of Artown, a non-profit corporation whose mission is to inspire community through the arts. Each year, the festival hosts 300,000+ attendees at over 100 venues, including major events that fundraise for art organizations for the entire year. With restrictions on large gatherings and event cancellations, this beloved happening had to pivot in nearly every way. Introducing Heartown. Lead by community activist, artist, creator, marketing director of Artown, and my dear friend Oliver X, Heartown brought a whole lot of inspiration to Reno/Tahoe.

"These times have further emboldened me to give more, to express gratitude as a central tenet in my life, and to practice empathy and daily compassion for others,” X states. “These [values] seem fundamental, but the ‘more me mine’ culture of scarcity is difficult to unlearn.

Photos this page: Jeramie Lu

Empathy in action as an exercise, at least for me, has validated how much direct community arts engagement changes lives and restores hope." Where there is love, there is a way. The LOVE sculpture found a permanent home at Renown Regional Medical Center in downtown Reno and inspired the Heartown campaign. X continues, "The entire Heartown process has been truly inspiring and heartwarming. To see families working together to make art for others, to uplift our spirits and create more beauty in the world, has been a gift that is priceless." My favorite way to toast this incredible event is to stop by The Brewer’s Cabinet in the Riverwalk District and sip on the Artown Silver Lager, a crisp, refreshing, Vienna-style brew that is perfect for any season. They will donate $1 from every Artown Silver Lager sold to Artown. While 2020’s Artown was different, the heart and soul of this event was seen, felt and heard throughout the area, this July and year-round. To learn more and support Artown, visit artown.org.

A wonderful thing happens when the food and the actual food makers live near each other. The chefs, the beef, the pork, the berries... they're all neighbors. Even the distance between barley and barrel is closer than most folks' morning commute. This kind of proximity transforms a typical meat-'n-taters meal into a spirited outing of eating, imbibing and laughs. Looking for a different kind of foodie fling? Make plans to visit Carson Valley's legendary chefs, distillers, growers and resident critters this weekend.
