TRAILS LESS TRAVELED

ESCAPE THE CROWDS AND ENJOY REMOTE NATURE. By Paul Andrew

hether you’re visiting the Lake Tahoe area, or a local, one advantage to this region is the ability to escape crowds, if you know where to go. Whether biking, hiking, or paddle boarding, there are opportunities to find that secluded spot to enjoy nature, breathe the crisp mountain air, and get lost in your thoughts. In these crazy, fast-paced times, it is so valuable to find much needed serenity whenever possible. The High Sierra has achieved momentous popularity in recent years and seclusion gets harder and harder to find. During busy weekends, some spots can resemble traffic on an L.A. freeway. Taking a hike in a pine forest is a majestic experience. For advanced hikers, the Tahoe Rim Trail provides spectacular scenery, a variety of terrain, and challenging trails. With 162 total miles surrounding Lake Tahoe, there are many different access points to the trail, depending on the distance one wants to travel. tahoerimtrail.org For those who don’t want anything as daunting, several lower elevation trails are easy to manage. A wooded path just north of Zephyr Cove Resort, with spectacular views of the shoreline and secluded beaches, meanders through the woods, over a creek to the community of Skyland a few miles away. At the return of your walk, enjoy a meal at the Zephyr Cove Restaurant, or take a scenic cruise to Emerald Bay on the M.S. Dixie. zephyrcove.com Also on the Nevada side of South Shore is a paved multi-use hiking and biking trail between Kingsbury Grade off Cottonwood Drive, meandering through the trees to Round Hill Shopping Center. Crossing the highway down Elks Point Road, the path continues to

Round Hill Pines, where one can sample a cocktail at their beach bar, or rent a variety of watercraft. roundhillpinesresort.com There’s a waterfall in Carson City? When visiting the historic Nevada State capital, a beautiful spot to take a hike is the Kings Canyon Waterfall. This 25-foot, cascading waterfall is only about five minutes west of downtown and accessible off a 1.9-mile loop trail, with additional hiking options in the vicinity. visitcarsoncity.com The Tahoe-Pyramid Trail, also enjoyed by hikers and bikers, when completed will extend 113 miles along the Truckee River from Pyramid Lake, through Reno, to Tahoe City. Much of the trail is paved, with other portions dirt roads only. The elevation gain for the entire trail is over 2,000 feet. Though still a “work in progress,” much of this unique trail can currently be enjoyed. tahoepyramidtrail.org For paddle boarders, there is nothing in the world that matches the scenic beauty and serenity of the 72-mile Lake Tahoe Water Trail. This breathtaking journey, which circumnavigates the lake, provides numerous launch and landing sites, and is divided into seven day trip segments. laketahoewatertrail.org Whether your desire is hiking, biking, paddle boarding, or just lying on the beach, there are unlimited opportunities to “get away from it all,” and enjoy the seclusion and peace that the High Sierra has to offer. Just exploring the numerous trails, beaches and wooded areas can provide peace of mind and tranquility. All we ask is that those enjoying our beautiful area “leave no trace”, and respect this unique area that we have the honor to experience.

Picture-perfect views, a challenging course and entertainment await at Lake Tahoe Golf Course. By Richard “Dickie” Peraldo

An avid golfer for most of my life, I like golf courses that test my game and mesmerize my mind with outstanding views. Lake Tahoe Golf Course not only achieves this goal, it exceeds all my expectations. Approaching the first tee, you’re smacked in the face with 360degree views. Step up to the tee box with driver in hand and you’ll be staring at Dick’s Peak and Mt. Tallac. This is a sure sign for a spectacular day. Hole 6, my favorite hole, not because it was my first birdie the last time I golfed the course, but rather for it’s beauty. The Upper Truckee River flows freely right in front of you on the tee box and then again on the green. Just listening to the river not only calmed my nerves, it made my jaw drop. This was a special hole. Many courses have one side or a few holes with great views, but after making the turn to the back nine you’ll realize it’s not the case here. Standing on the tenth tee, after an extraordinary front nine, the lush green fairway meets sky-high snow-capped mountains. I knew the back nine was going to treat me just right with great golf and even greater views. The heart of the back nine includes even more holes with the Upper Truckee River not only for my viewing pleasure but also in play! One time, I was on the green reading my putt to save par and two kayakers floated by absolutely immersed in their day.

18 HOLES & THEN SOME As much as I love the views, I also enjoy the challenge this course offers. The front nine are very open with a grip it and rip it like a young Tiger Woods feel, minus the 50+ yards of course. The back nine is a little bit more target golf, a risk/reward-type vibe. The driver still makes it out of my bag, but there are a few holes where an iron off the tee works just fine. With three different tee boxes and water coming into play on 13 holes, this course will be a challenge for any skill level. Lake Tahoe Golf Course is more than just golf and views, its ability to entertain is second to none. From weddings to banquets to bachelor parties (which I witnessed firsthand), this place is about fun. They have an amazing snack bar, a great bar (with their signature drink, the Happier Gilmore), a snazzy dance floor and an unbelievably friendly staff. Lake Tahoe Golf Course is a reasonably priced showstopper. The golf is amazing, the views are to die for and they offer entertainment like no other. Sitting here on the patio enjoying the views and a Happier Gilmore after 18 holes, you’ll agree life doesn’t get any better than this. laketahoegc.com

CASTING A BOU N D I N R E N O/ T A H O E By Paul Andrew

There is an old saying; “The worst day of fishing is better than the best day of work!” This couldn’t be more true in the High Sierra, where countless options to spend a calm day on a lake, wading in a stream, are available, while enjoying the challenge of catching one’s dinner. Whether a novice or a veteran angler, the opportunities available in the Lake Tahoe area are numerous. Regardless of the type of fishing you prefer, or level of experience, a day outside in the clean air, under clear blue skies, provides an unforgettable day. One of the unique ways to enjoy fishing on Lake Tahoe is through one of the many boat charter services. Tahoe Sport Fishing has provided fishing excursions for locals and visitors since 1953. With a fleet of eight boats, all the equipment needed, and the expertise to 'find the best spots,' Tahoe Sports Fishing makes a day on the lake an unmatched fishing experience. tahoesportfishing.com.

“SPOTS ALONG THE TRUCKEE RIVER ARE GOOD FOR CATCHING ALL KINDS OF TROUT, INCLUDING RAINBOW, BROWN AND OCCASIONAL CUTTHROAT,”

ADVENTURE

For those who want to tackle the art of fly fishing (pun intended), you can find many serene options in our area with a multitude of streams and lakes. Fly fishing takes practice, skill and concentration. The goal is to fool the smart fish into thinking a living fly has daintily landed on the surface of the water for them to consume. Reno Fly Shop in Reno offers everything you need, regardless if you’re a novice or expert, including equipment to rent or buy, guided tours, and insider knowledge of where fish are currently biting. renoflyshop.com “Spots along the Truckee River are good for catching all kinds of trout, including Rainbow, Brown and the occasional Cutthroat,” says Matt Cullen, staff member at Reno Fly Shop. “Many of the secluded smaller lakes outside of Tahoe, and remote streams are successful depending on the time of year.” In South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters, has a full-service shop where equipment and supplies can be purchased, plus they offer fully guided tours. tahoeflyfishing.com “The Carson River in Alpine County is always popular for a fishing getaway,” says Jesse Howes, shop manager of Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters. “Our guides generally know the best, remote spots.” If you really want to dive into the sport hook, line and sinker, (another bad pun, sorry!), you can learn to tie your own flies through Sebastiani FeatherCrafters by calling 760-608-2178. Anyone 16 years old or over does need to obtain either a California or Nevada fishing license. They are available for various numbers of days, can be obtained at any of the numerous fishing our sporting good stores, or on-line at either wildlife.ca.gov/fishing, or ndow.org

ADVENTURE

For the youngsters, a day of fishing at Sawmill Pond, just a few miles east of the “Y” in South Lake Tahoe, gives kids the thrills of hooking a big one in a relaxed, easy-to-get-to setting. This regularly stocked lake is full of Rainbow trout anxious to be caught. Though adults are allowed to supervise, fishing isn’t permitted for anyone older than fifteen. Once you’ve caught your “trophy” fish, MacDuff ’s Public House in South Lake Tahoe will cook your catch in a variety of scrumptious ways so you can enjoy your “reward” after the hard fought battles. “Our chefs can prepare your fish in a white wine sauce, blackened, or other tasty recipes,” says Joseph Lynn, a “do everything” representative of the restaurant. “Just drop the fish off, give us the time you want to eat, and we’ll have it prepared.” macduffspub.com Regardless of whether you just want to sit by a lake with a pole in one hand, and a beer in the other, or venture deep into the wilderness to search out the perfect spot to land a big one, fishing in the Reno/ Tahoe area offers variety, challenges and peacefulness. All we ask is that anglers make sure no tackle, lines, or other evidence of their adventure is left behind. It’s important to leave our beautiful area as pristine as you found it. Enjoy the day!

ur region was settled during the mining boom in the mid1800s. History permeates the stunning peaks and valleys strewn throughout the Reno-Tahoe area, rolling into the Carson Valley. Today, many structures remain from the original foundation of communities, reminding us of the past, and allowing us to savor stories along with our meals and beverages.

CARSON CRAFTED Nevada’s historic capital, Carson City, emerged after settlers established nearby towns in the picturesque Carson Valley. Many testaments to the area’s past still exist, serving customers great food and drinks within walls dating back over 150 years. The Union in Carson City is an eatery, brewpub and coffee house in one, located on Carson City’s main street, still teeming with antiquity. Beers such as The Governor Hefeweizen pay tribute to the area’s political position in the state and are best served with evolved comfort foods like their Smoked Pork Belly Mac 'n' Cheese. Outside their doors, nearby markers guide historians along the Kit Carson Trail to walk off their meal. theunioncarson.com Along that trail are two other notable landmarks that serve enticing delicacies and local libations. Long a hotspot for politicos to gather due to its proximity to government buildings, the Bank Saloon — dubbed Jack’s Bar in 1966 — recently reopened with its maiden moniker. The original structure witnessed prohibition raids, robberies at gunpoint, and was among the first Nevada establishments in the early 20th century to receive its gambling license. This is not the place to fuel up, unless you run on grain alcohol. Bank Saloon is where to unwind with a cocktail, often made from locally produced spirits, catch up with friends over cocktails or a beer, and imagine the important state decisions made while mingling over the bar in days of yore. banksaloonnv.com 20 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

Elegant dark woods and crimson fabrics embrace you upon entering the Fox Brewpub, located in a longstanding landmark, the St. Charles Hotel. Above, in the pub’s structural home, prominent state figures, pioneers and miners once laid their heads in one of the first Carson City lodging properties, an elegant brick structure built in 1862. The hotel is still open to overnight guests, though now they can journey downstairs for a freshly crafted brew and some delectable English-style delicacies. Dozens of handcrafted beers dot the menu, alongside traditional fish and chips, burgers, salads, wings and more. foxbrewpub.com

Sustainability was key from the ground, up, when Bently Heritage Estate Distillery was established in a 100-year-old Minden flour mill now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Owners rehabilitated the century-old building with a nod to its history, while updating it to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification standards. Grains used in their spirits, such as harvest winter rye, wheat, barley and oats, are sustainably grown on the estate surrounding the distillery, then processed in the mill that was originally built for grain handling long ago. Tours of the distillery aren’t currently available in person, but samples of their spirits are found in watering holes throughout the region and digital visitors can explore the estate online. bentlyheritage.com In a 1902 building that once served as a meat market, then restaurant, hotel and pub, the Carson Valley’s lengthy history of Basque settlers is still celebrated. In Gardnerville, Overland Restaurant and Pub honors the Basque sheepherder culture with cuisine inspired by the regional pioneers. Dishes such as their sausage platter featuring Basque chorizo, plus starters like Basque shrimp and beer-battered cheese curds are served within brick walls lined with copper and topped by antique tin ceilings. Smoked meats are their specialty, while locally brewed beers accompany the dishes delectably. Letting your eyes wander around the restaurant can make you feel like you stepped back into the town’s early 20th century heyday. overland-restaurant.com Nearby, in Genoa, Nevada’s first settlement established in 1851, the town’s namesake bar is a longstanding legend. The list of celebrities who have stopped into the Genoa Bar over the decades reads like an

REVELING IN RENO ANTIQUITY Established officially in 1868, Reno was founded when the transcontinental railroad reached the region. The Biggest Little City in the World became the nation’s divorce capital in the early 1900s, and also a bustling metropolis once gaming was legalized in 1931. Structural reminders of the city’s history still remain, many serving fantastic food and beverages from inside walls we wish could talk Like the historic Riverside Hotel. Marilyn Monroe stayed here. Throngs of hopeful divorcees made it their home. Sinatra crooned from its stage. With one of the most fascinating histories in Reno, The Riverside Hotel once towered above the city skyline, beckoning guests from the banks of the Truckee River. Today, it’s on the National Register of Historic Places and home to dozens of artists in its new life as the Riverside Artist Lofts. Incredible food is also served from its ground floor at the Wild River Grille. wildrivergrille.com “Our restaurant’s home and 15-year journey in the original Riverside Hotel has been extraordinary,” says Chuck Shapiro, owner of Wild River Grille. “The lore of bygone times mixed with present and future possibilities is a narrative that many people want to hear. Walking through the Grille’s doors, guests are taken on a pictorial tour of the Riverside’s past. Large black and white photos line the walls sharing previous iterations of the area and former hotel. An expansive patio for seating lets diners bask in the brick building’s exterior beauty and other longstanding structures surrounding it. Thoughtfully curated cocktail and wine lists accompany the mouthwatering cuisine served for lunch, dinner and happy hour. Nearby is another notably historical place to imbibe and dine. When the owners of The Depot Craft Brewery and Distillery selected the centuryold former headquarters for the NevadaCalifornia-Oregon Railway as the location to begin crafting beers and spirits, they paid homage to the structure’s past while giving it an industrial-style makeover. Several stories and abundant gathering areas welcome eaters and imbibers to try their spirits and microbrews crafted on-site. FRESH AIR FOODIES Can't-miss outdoor dining options in Reno/Tahoe By Tiara Wasner

Summer is my favorite season. In fact, I started dreaming of summer and outdoor dining in January! Earlier this year, during the dead of winter we had a week where temperatures hit 50 degrees and there was no snow in the long-range forecast. The sun on my face had me reminiscing about sitting on the beach with my girlfriends enjoying fish tacos and painkillers at Round Hill Pines. If you know, you know. roundhillpinesresort.com

Nibbles and Big Blue Lake Tahoe is known for its views. Truth be told, Emerald Bay might be one of the most photographed places in the U.S. So, let’s grab a bite and enjoy some views! Whether you’re visiting for the first time or you're a Lake Tahoe local, Edgewood Tahoe Resort should be at the top of your list. The Bistro is mountain-chic yet casual, making it the ideal place to gather and share the adventures of the day while savoring the finest eats and breathtaking views. edgewoodtahoe.com For an amazing meal on the lake, make sure to stop for lunch at Chambers Landing Bar & Grill. This historic waterfront restaurant is the oldest bar on the water on the California side. The Chamber’s Punch is a must! chamberspunch.com While we're chatting about iconic Lake Tahoe restaurants, Sunnyside Restaurant & Lounge is the perfect spot for lunch when you’re adventuring on the West Shore or spending the day on the lake. While indoor and outdoor dining is available, I highly suggest grabbing a table outside, soaking in the views, and people watching. My go-to’s include fresh fish tacos, fish & chips, and their Mountain Mule! sunnysidelodge.com Headed to South Shore? Artemis Lake Front Cafe is perfect for those looking for an affordable, quick outdoor dining experience with picturesque views. The shrimp pita and lamb gyro are 24 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

household favorites, but it’s all about their highly addictive houseseasoned fries with Artemis dipping sauce. Yes, the fries are that good. artemislakefrontcafe.com

Tasty valley views If you find yourself driving through Carson City and hungry, swing by Mangia Tutto. They offer a great lunch special, but even better thin crust pizza! The great debate is which one to order. I’m a fan of the BBQ Chicken, Kiss Me and Veggie Lovers, but you really can’t go wrong. They even have a family style menu or to go! mangiatuttopizzeria.com I highly suggest exploring the Biggest Little City’s budding food scene! Ask any local and they’ll tell you Wild River Grille has delicious eating and the best outdoor seating area right next to the infamous Truckee River! It’s perfect for families and date nights. Order the Tropical Tuna Tartare, braised short ribs, and flourless chocolate torte. wildrivergrille.com If you’re looking for contemporary dining with an outdoor patio then the Twisted Fork is a must. They’re known for their uniquely flavorful “BIG-SMALL” plates. Make sure to order the cauliflower ceviche, pastor pork tacos or Tamal de Champiñones. Which pair perfectly with the Thyme After Time Sangria! twistedforkreno.com “Gourmet All Day” is Stone House Cafe’s motto and they are living up to it from breakfast to dinner. While they serve all the traditional breakfast dishes, I highly suggest opting for the smoked salmon benedict or mixed berry crepes. If you’re up for sharing, order the half roasted free-range chicken or opt for the blackened Thai ahi. Either way you can’t go wrong. stonehousecafereno.com Whether you’re spending the day at Lake Tahoe or adventuring in Reno, the region offers an array of delicious food options and outdoor dining.

SIZZLING STEAKS &SUNSHINE LOCAL MEAT MASTER SHARES BARBECUING TIPS. By Natasha Bourlin

When his parents opened South Lake Tahoe’s Overland Meat and Seafood Company in 1987, current owner Brian Cohen never imagined he’d be taking over the business 18 years later. As most tend to do, his parents wanted to retire and Cohen saw an entrepreneurial opportunity. Come 2005, Cohen left his job at a grocery store to carry on the butchering legacy. He kept the business afloat despite extraordinarily hard times including the tragic Angora fire and start of the recession. He turned it into a thriving go-to spot for Tahoe residents seeking quality meats, seafood and proteins not found at the grocery store. “We specialize in filling a void that grocery stores here have left and offering items not found anywhere else,” Cohen says. “Offering the best quality and fresh items is what we strive for. You get what you pay for. You can buy cheaper products, but you can’t buy better.” While closed Wednesdays and Sundays, meeting customer demands for quality over quantity is a daily duty for Cohen and his team. The full-service meat market carries a consistent selection of meats with no hormones, antibiotics or animal by-products, plus fresh seafood, organic, free-range poultry and many other complementary products. For the past 14 years, they’ve overnighted fresh fish from Hawaii every Friday, bringing a weekly dose of the Pacific Ocean to Tahoe. 26 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

Locals know every Tuesday and Friday is Fresh Fish, and lines of fish-fancying customers eagerly await the aquatic Hawaiian harvest. They offer only wild caught seafood. Overland carries a full assortment of locally made Tahoe products, including the famous Swiss Chalet Dressing.

GET GRILLING With barbecue season in full swing, take some tips from a meat master. Cohen says it’s crucial to let steaks warm up to room temperature before cooking, so place them on the counter for oneto-two hours before they hit the grill. One of the most important guidelines for any grill chef is to only flip your meat, poultry or fish once. Every time you flip it, juices are expelled. Then, test the temperature with a meat thermometer, but never cut into it to check if it’s done — you’ll just let all those precious juices out. Instead, let it rest after taking it off the grill for about 20 minutes to let the juices set up within the meat properly, creating mouthwatering results. As for spices, a high-grade piece of meat should be tasted in its full glory, so he recommends only a sprinkling of salt and pepper prior to cooking. Should you want a bit more flavor, Overland Meat and Seafood Company is stocked with tried and true seasonings that work well with the items they sell. overlandmeatco.com

Take a tour through

I come from a small town called Lincoln, Nebraska, but I’m headed to the Biggest Little City. It’s one of the only places a woman can get divorced, and I desperately need to. My lawyer said to file on the grounds of extreme cruelty. My husband won’t even let me listen to my radio programs! He’s so controlling, and I want … no, need some freedom. Before I boarded the train, I typed him a Dear John letter, and left it on the table. Through the tears, I signed it: “Never again yours, your soon to be ex, Darling”

By Natasha Bourlin

A new walking experience showcases Reno’s quirky history. It was deep into the pandemic. Gardening and cooking had lost their luster. Creativity was calling. So, Mark and Jinger Kalin, founders of Magic Underground in Reno, decided to take their enchantment to the streets and create a socially distant, safe and informative form of entertainment for people also bored to tears at home.

The Kalins wanted to reconnect with people again and believed others did too. The magical duo decided to show off the quirkier sides of their beloved town, with the help of local historian Courtney Meredith, and the Weird Reno walking tour was born.

Beginning at the Renaissance Reno Downtown Hotel and Spa, the approximately 75-minute tour for up to 25 people takes place weekly, Friday through Sunday, and embarks by setting a mysterious stage.

He doesn’t know where I’m going. I don’t really either. I’ve been reading in the society pages about Reno, Nevada. It’s where all the celebrities are going to get a quick divorce these days. I just need to wait six weeks to get my residency, then I can be rid of my mean husband, in just a matter of minutes once I’m at the courthouse. I arranged to lodge at this lovely place called the Riverside. Everyone there is so high fashion! I feel a little out of place, being a small-town girl, but I’m going to get a job, and make my own money. Friends tell me I can get a job at one of the fancy gaming establishments here with restaurants. I’m going to try. There’s so much freedom here. I can even go into a bar without a man and spend money I made myself for the first time in my life … I feel so liberated! I’ve already gotten rid of my wedding ring, but I’m going to get a dime store ring so that I can kiss the columns of the courthouse and then toss my ring into the river from the Virginia Street Bridge, as is tradition once the divorce papers are approved, I hear. Then, I’m going to take back my maiden name, but I can’t divulge it. Many women are living here in secret, like me, and we don’t really share our full names. What if he were to come find me? But I love it so much here in Reno, I think I’m going to stay. It feels good to be so free.

Magic and theatrics, the world-renowned pair’s specialty, are incorporated into all aspects. Guests are initially given an envelope and told not to open it until the end. Tour emissaries then take them on a light stroll through downtown Reno’s Riverwalk District, telling tales of the city’s offbeat history at select stops. Weird Reno includes a visit to the courthouse, which in 1878 served as the location for Northern Nevada’s only public hanging. Stroll through Wingfield Park, once known as Bell Island in the early 1900s, formed when the Truckee River was dammed. There, learn about local legend George Wingfield’s land donation to the city and the once carnival-like atmosphere it was known for. At the Frisch House, hear the story of Roy Frisch, who testified against notorious mobsters of the day before he simply vanished one evening walking home. Many more locales shrouded in mystery complete the outing. The experience incorporates street performances, humor and, of course, magic. 32 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

“Reno is a character in itself,” Mark Kalin says. “This is intended to be something that gives everybody a chance to reconnect and do it outside in a safe, COVID-19-compliant manner.” Culminating at the Renaissance, the excursion ends with a vignette involving characters uncovered along the tour, a toast, the opening of the mystery envelope, a love ritual paying homage to Reno’s divorce trade, and guests making a bit of magic themselves. Weird Reno features two daily tours currently, one family friendly, the other more adult-focused, taking place after dark. The Kalins will change it up seasonally to keep it fresh, along with hosting Halloween and holiday editions. For the community and visitors alike, the entertaining and educational tour costs $25, and can be booked online on Weird Reno’s website at weirdreno.com Photos this page: Weird Reno (Jeramie Lu)

Hearkening songs about Reno, Nevada By Oliver X

Reno has always been bigger than its britches. That likely has something to do with the spirit of the west that is in the dust, air and sage. The possibilities held in endless vistas; the hope of striking it rich and staking your claim to the American dream. Perhaps because Reno’s nickname as the “Biggest Little City in the World” was earned against the backdrop of weekend Rat Pack getaways with Sammy, Frank and Dean, and glamorous starlets getting quickie divorces in a city whose vices were made legal long before the sins of its sister city to the south rose from the dust, painted in pink neon. But I suggest that there’s another reason that Reno ascended in our collective imaginations: Reno is an idea that never asked for permission. An idea bigger than the desert sky. A city stem cell, ever searching for its soul, ever on the verge of becoming something grand. Reno embodies the spirit of the rebel seeker, attracting artists, actors and outlaws, tech moguls, cowboys, fortune hunters and adventurers — it’s even inspired some of the most gifted musicians in the world to contemplate the city in song.

Reno on their minds I remember being flabbergasted when Reno serial entrepreneur Scott Dunseath, owner of the popular Home Means Nevada Co. stores (formerly Reno eNVy), played me his compilation of an entire playlist of songs that referenced Reno. The song titles and tracks numbered in the dozens, representing nearly every genre from country to art rock and everything in between. homemeansnevada.com The legendary Johnny Cash immortalized Reno lore in one of his most famous and enduring hit songs, 1968’s “Folsom Prison Blues:”

“When I was just a baby, my mama told me Son, always be a good boy, don’t never play with guns. But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die. When I hear that whistle blowin’, I hang my head and cry.” On his 13th studio album, 2005’s “Devils & Dust,” The Boss penned the haunting tome “Reno” about a lady of the night from the BLC. Springsteen’s narrator sings in a world weary, westerninflected drawl that sounds like it could be owned by a lonely miner seeking simple comfort from a warm companion, who becomes his redeemer for one night. Rock wunderkind Beck Hanson’s biggest hit dropped a reference to Reno in his mega-platinum selling slacker anthem “Loser:”

“Kill the headlight and put it in neutral Stock car flamin’ with a loser and the cruise control Baby’s in Reno with the vitamin D Got a couple of couches, sleep on the love-seat”

Mayor Greg Fischer, Mayor Hillary Schieve spearheaded Reno’s involvement through then city Special Events Manager Alexis Hill, who enlisted the help of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, Artown, singer-songwriter Eric Andersen and filmmaker Bryon Evans. Together they produced “Heartbeat to Heartbeat Eye to Eye (From Reno with Love).” This powerful song and video message of hope and unity showcases the talents of 53 of Reno’s finest musicians and has earned 25,000 views on YouTube so far. youtu.be/Vn5AL1jIr6Y “This amazing song and video show that, even though our lives have changed dramatically … our arts and culture scene is still very much alive in Reno,” Schieve says.

Locals live Rock n Roll Hall of Famers R.E.M. have a popular, deep album cut that is a fan favorite titled “All the Way to Reno.” Mixing spaghetti western twang, descending guitar chords and shoe-gazer rock, the track aptly conveys themes of high desert dreams:

“Humming all the way to Reno You’ve dusted the laws of chance” The bridge refrain is also the minor hook:

“You know what you are You’re gonna be a star…”

Homegrown and resilient With so many references to Reno by major artists over the years, it’s little wonder that the region’s thriving homegrown music scene swelled to produce breakout artists of all kinds over several decades. Artists as disparate as punk rockers 7 Seconds; low woodwind phenom and UNR alum Dr. Brian Landrus; classic rock stars The Greg Golden Band; electric violinist Tim Snider; and, multiinstrumentalists Whitney Myer and Grace Hayes, who found fame with stints on “The Voice” and “American Idol,” respectively — to name just a few. When the pandemic struck in 2020, it put a screeching halt to nearly all local live performance opportunities, as venues closed and artist’s gigs dried up due to COVID-19 related health restrictions. Add to that the impact of racial unrest and sociopolitical upheavals, and many musicians found themselves out of work facing uncertain futures. Instead of collapsing, Reno’s music community pulled together to collaborate on a special project that made national news. Inspired by the nationwide City Songs project launched by Louisville Kentucky 36 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

Northern Nevada musicians persevered through the pandemic and found ways to earn a living using technology. Eric Andersen hosted live stream concerts and made money from viewer donations using an electronic tip jar. Other artists followed suit, some shifting to teaching music classes via Zoom. Venues with long lead calendars postponed and rescheduled large portions of their live programming. But theaters like the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts pivoted by hosting virtual concerts with popular organizations like the Reno Phil and their spring 2021 event, Serenade for Strings. pioneercenter.com The good news is with increased vaccinations and decreasing infection rates, venues are beginning to open back up. Wild River Grille owner Chuck Shapiro welcomes the return of his popular Summer Dinner Concert Series featuring favorites Tyler Stafford, Milton Merlos, Colin Ross, Eric Andersen, Joel Ackerson and many more. “We’ll have live music most nights of the week,” Shapiro says. wildrivergrille.com In Lake Tahoe, there’s a true feeling of optimism and excitement for the return of live music. Montbleu Resort, Casino and Spa in Stateline has a spring and summer lineup of stellar national touring artists and live entertainment, with headliners Tech N9NE, George Thorogood, and the Destroyers and Boz Scaggs. Popular destinations like Harveys Lake Tahoe and Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, at the time of this writing, are encouraging visitors to check their websites for the most current information and show listings. montbleuresort.com; caesars.com Music fans can check their favorite music venues’ and homegrown artists’ music sites and social media pages for live event announcements this spring and summer. The Tahoe concert and event promoters I spoke to like Paul Reder and Dreu Murin, said that they have big plans to welcome back live audiences and the talented musicians that make our local scene exciting and vibrant. So, get back out there and help keep live music going strong in Reno-Tahoe! Photo this page: Tim Snider

Whether it’s time to get more active or start the spring and summer off right, Reno/Tahoe has some easy ways to make lifelong mind and body differences today. I love to include my husband and our two boys in an effort to make a positive impact in our daily lives and this amazing community. Here are a few of our family’s favorite things to do …

TAKE A HIKE One of our most cherished places to go this time of year is Chickadee Ridge located within the Tahoe Meadows on the Tahoe Rim Trail. You can snowshoe or hike up the mountainside where you’ll find chickadees (small, native birds that are trained to land in your hand) and sweeping views of the area. The journey to the top can take a bit longer with the littles in tow, but it is certainly worth it to see their faces light up when little birdies tweet hello and they get that million-dollar view of Big Blue. tahoerimtrail.org

DRINK IT IN Did you know the water in Lake Tahoe is what comes straight from the tap when you’re in the area? That’s right, the same water making up the second deepest freshwater lake in the U.S. and renowned for its crystal clear purity, is the same stuff coming from the fountains and bottle refill stations available to you. If you’d prefer to spend some time on the water, hop on the Lake Tahoe Water Trail — an endless 72-mile water route along the Tahoe shoreline with public launch and landing sites, wayfinding signage, paddle routes to match your ability and interests, navigation tools, and water safety tips to help you have a safe, fun and refreshing paddle adventure. laketahoewatertrail.org

FIERCE FIRE

SPECIAL FEATURE

By Heidi Bethel

44 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

In recent years, this area has been riddled with severe wild fires consuming homes, businesses and the habitat many native species rely upon to survive. While fires tend to be a threat in most places, the Great Basin carries an elevated level of torment due to one key factor … wind. Adam Mayberry, communications manager and PIO for Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue explains, “We have strong air currents and wind events that can do a lot of damage once we have fire starts. Our biggest concern is the wind. It’s the most dangerous ingredient that can spread the fire faster than we can deploy.”

FIERCE FIRE

I

t can start with something as simple as chains dragging behind a truck meant to keep the travel trailer connected. That metal on pavement sparks. Before you know it, 20 acres are consumed along the side of the road. Wild fires are a serious danger, often started by well-meaning passersby who don’t realize the small flick of a cigarette ash or twinkling sparkler can wreak havoc on Sierra terrain.

SQUELCHING THE BURN Several agencies work together to fight wildfires including the Bureau of Land Management, Tahoe Basin and Truckee Meadows fire agencies, CAL FIRE, Nevada and California Division of Forestry, and others. In addition to efforts on the ground, the Nevada Air National Guard deploys C-130s equipped with the U.S. Forest Service’s Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System as one of only four fire fighting fleets in the country to battle western blazes. While the reinforcements are many, perhaps the best practice is prevention. Mayberry notes, “Visitors and residents really need to monitor and be aware of the lands they are recreating on and find out ahead of time if they allow open flames including barbecue pits and campfires. Many of the federal lands begin to tighten up as you get deeper into the summer and fall months.”

"THE BEST THING PEOPLE CAN DO IS BE AWARE OF FIRE RISK AND ACT ACCORDINGLY."

Another element hindering the Reno/Tahoe area is cheat grass. “It’s an invasive plant species that burns hot and fast. As you move toward the mountains, you see timber, pine trees and cedar which all are very heavy fuels,” Mayberry notes.

We’ve all seen the fire catastrophes from around the world, from Australia to northern California. In Tahoe, we can still see the burn scars from the Angora Fire in 2007, and driving up Emerald Bay from the fire in 2016 and the Gondola Fire in 2002, from a cigarette being thrown from a gondola.

FIGHTING FIRE WITH FIRE

As Mayberry concludes, “The best thing people can do is be aware of fire risk and act accordingly.”

One way to get ahead of monumental fire events is through prescribed fire operations. Many agencies in the area comprise Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team aimed at conducting preventative burns.

FIVE FIRE MUST KNOWS

In a recent press release, they describe the necessity for these small burns. “Prescribed fires are a vital tool for restoring forest health to fire-adapted ecosystems. Fire is a natural and essential process in the Sierra Nevada that cannot be duplicated by thinning operations alone. Prescribed fires mimic natural, low intensity fires which burn mainly on the forest floor, consuming excess vegetation (fuels), such as small trees and shrubs, allowing mature trees to remain intact. These fires not only reduce ground fuels, they help trees increase resistance to insects and disease leading to a healthier, more resilient forest over time.”
