Curtains Up! Catch a performance or film at Reno/Tahoe theaters. By Annie Flanzraich

W

illiam Shakespeare once wrote, "All the world is a stage." So, it's not a stretch to say that the theatrical arts are all around. From intimate venues to large performance halls, many places in the Sierra offer the chance to see a show. As a reformed actress (the highlight of my theatrical career included a performance as Orphan No. 76 during my high school's production of the musical, Annie), I’m always keen to see a show or film. Here are some of my favorite venues.

DOWNTOWN RENO’S STAGE For 22 years, Brüka Theatre has presented classic, contemporary and original theatre for adults and children in Reno. The shows at this downtown Reno venue range from the serious to the zany. For its 27th season, Brüka will present nine plays, including The Children and Waiting for Godot. bruka.org

A RED -C A RPET A FFA IR Hollywood comes to Reno the night of the Cordillera International Film Festival Oscar party every February. This nonprofit organization rolls out the red carpet for a gala evening with a live broadcast of the Academy Awards. CIFF also hosts many events throughout the year, including its signature international film festival. ciffnv.org

DINNER A ND A SHOW The 580-seat Eldorado Showroom hosts Broadway-style production shows and entertainers from many genres. Every seat is the best seat in the house in this theatre. For the full experience, try a dinner and a show package. eldoradoreno.com

YOU C A N ’ T S AY THAT IN THE THE ATER! In Midtown Reno, Good Luck Macbeth and Artemisia MovieHouse offer a double feature. This theater on Taylor street hosts live performances by GLM, and film screenings by Artemisia. For its 2020 line-up, Good Luck Macbeth has seven plays on tap, including Noises Off! goodluckmacbeth. org; artemisiamovies.weebly.com

WATCH IN LUXURY If you like your performances with a side of lounging seats and gourmet treats, then get ye to a Galaxy Theatre. Sparks boasts two of these indulgent venues. Galaxy Legends in The Outlets at Legends is the only theatre in the region that shows IMAX and IMAX 3D. So, you can enjoy state of the art cinema with a glass of wine from the concession stand. Get cozy in the luxury loungers and find the perfect angle for your viewing pleasure. At Galaxy Victorian in Sparks, Reno/Tahoe's newest movie theatre, the plush interior ties with the concessions selection for best feature at a feature film. galaxytheatres.com

SEE A SHOW AT THE DUKE The Duke Theatre, located at Lake Tahoe Community College, is home to performances by the Theatre Arts Department and other community groups. This black box theatre hosts a variety of shows and performances. ltcc.edu

A NIGHT AT THE OPER A See a Metropolitan Opera performance without traveling a few thousand miles at Riverside Cinemark with its The Met: Live in HD series. The 2020 season includes performances such as Porgy and Bess and Tosca. cinemark.com

THE A RT OF FILM A ND MORE The Nevada Museum of Art’s Wayne and Miriam Prim Theater screens films connected to recent exhibitions and also hosts performances of all kinds. With a large-format screen and quality acoustics, theater troupes, performers and filmmakers feel right at home. nevadaart.org

AS GOOD AS GOLD Underneath a gilded geodesic dome in Downtown Reno, the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts hosts Broadway shows, and performances by the Reno Philharmonic, AVA Ballet Theatre, Artown and more. The 1,500-seat theater is the largest performing arts facility in Northern Nevada. The 2019-2020 season includes shows such as Bandstand, Jersey Boys, Reno Phil's Classix Series, and more. Underneath, lies the aptly named Pioneer Underground, home to Reno-Tahoe Comedy and performances by well-known comedians. pioneercenter.com; renotahoecomedy.com

FILM IN THE HAUS The Tahoe Art Haus & Cinema in Tahoe City features a remodeled theater and craft-focused bar. Audiences can sit in rocking leather seats or comfortable couches while watching a film or live performance. tahoearthauscinema.com

LOFT Y SHOW S A ND DINING Located in Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe, The Loft Theatre offers award-winning live performances, a high-end ultralounge, and an American Tapas restaurant. The theatre, inspired by The Magic Castle in Los Angeles, provides an intimate setting where audiences can enjoy magic fusion shows. With a variety of performers and a show every night, there's always something new at The Loft. Its adjacent restaurant, Taste, offers captivating

Stay Curious

Captivating museums around the Sierra. By Jen Peng

There are plenty of interactive museums in the Reno/Tahoe area, so there’s no reason to stop exploring just because the temperature dips. Here are some of our favorites in the region.

Speed on One of the top-rated automotive museums in the country, The National Automobile Museum (The Harrah Collection) features a collection of more than 200 historic and one-of-a-kind vehicles. Cruise the streets lined with classics, including some featured on television and in movies, or owned by celebrities such as JFK, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. The museum also hosts special, interactive exhibits, like Be the Astronaut, where you can fly a spaceship or drive a surface rover in simulated space missions; or Speed!, featuring several record-setting vehicles and photos of European racing from the beginning of the 20th century. automuseum.org

Expand your mind The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum, aka The Discovery, is Nevada’s largest hands-on science center, with 67,000 square feet of exhibits focused on science, technology, engineering, invention, art and history. Learn about the human body in Inside Out: an Anatomy Experience, or be an inventor and conduct experiments in Da Vinci’s Corner and Spark!Lab Smithsonian, just a few of the many permanent exhibits at the museum. Through March 2020, test your skills in the museum’s featured exhibition, Mindbender Mansion, with more than 40 individual and group puzzles, brainteasers and interactive challenges. nvdm.org

Fine art finds In addition to its permanent collection, the Nevada Museum of Art is featuring three special exhibits this winter: Wallsprawl #4 (Las Vegas, Next to Nellis Air Force Base) by Andrea Zittel, an artistic transformation of an aerial image into a custom-designed wallpaper; the mural Always Was Always Will Be by Australian Aboriginal artist Reko Rennie, which furthers the discussion on indigenous culture and identity in modern urban environments; and Work Ethic in American Art: The Legacy of E. L. Wiegand, a collection of art depicting the tireless pursuit of work over the last century. nevadaart.org

All about animation From Feb. 15 – May 10, the Wilbur D. May Museum will host the fun and interactive The Animation Academy. Learn all about how your favorite animated movies and shows are made, watch classic cartoons, see the tools of the trade, and try your hand at animating. There will be plenty of photo ops, hands-on art stations, as well as the world’s largest 3D zoetrope. That’s all in addition to the museum’s permanent collection of unique ethnographic items from around the world, including Egyptian tomb items, African tribal masks, American Western artworks, and exotic taxidermy. washoecounty.us

Minting Nevada history Learn all about Nevada’s natural and cultural history at the Nevada State Museum. The museum also offers special programs, including the Frances Humphrey Lecture Series, Family Fun Saturdays, and Behind the Scenes Tours on the fourth Thursday, second Saturday and last Friday of the month. Throughout 2020, the museum will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint’s opening with programs and special events, including demonstrations of the historic Coin Press No. 1 every Friday and Saturday, and a special celebration for the sesquicentennial of the first coin issuance on Feb. 4. carsonnvmuseum.org Whatever your interest, stay curious and check out some of the fascinating exhibits at area museums this winter!

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION:

Winter and early spring in Reno/

Tahoe have no shortage of activities to pursue. Beyond incredible mountain views, craft brews, and locally flavored restaurants, a world of top-notch cultural experiences await. The Nevada Museum of Art, conveniently situated on Liberty Street between Downtown and Midtown Reno, offers globally renowned exhibitions that will delight any traveler. Here are the season’s highlights:

Decorative Arms: Treasures from the Robert M. Lee Collection Through February 16, 2020 Decorative Arms includes more than 190 objects dating from as early as the 1500s through the modern era that showcase the skills of some of the most renowned arms makers and engravers in the world. Featuring historical suits of armor, antique firearms, swords, and modern arms, the exhibition is drawn from the private collection of Mr. Robert M. Lee — known to an international community of enthusiasts as one of the finest arms collections in the United States.

America's Art, Nevada's Choice: Community Selections from the Smithsonian American Art Museum Through April 19, 2020 Last summer, the Nevada Museum of Art launched a month-long community wide campaign where the public voted to decide which artworks would come to the museum 16 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

from Washington D.C. The three paintings on view are the “winners” that received the most public votes: The South Ledges, Appledore, 1913, by Childe Hassam; Ryder’s House, 1933, by Edward Hopper; and Georgia O’Keeffe’s Hibiscus with Plumeria, 1939. This is one in a series of American art exhibitions created through a multi-year, multi-institutional partnership formed by the Smithsonian American Art Museum as part of the Art Bridges + Terra Foundation Initiative. America’s Art, Nevada’s Choice at the Nevada Museum of Art is exclusively sponsored by the Art Bridges + Terra Foundation Initiative and the E. L. Wiegand Foundation.

The World Stage: Contemporary Art from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation March 14 – May 24, 2020 The World Stage assembles more than 100 contemporary artworks by 40 American artists, including Andy Warhol, Mickalene Thomas, Wendy Red Star, Robert Rauschenberg, Kehinde Wiley, and many others. The title The World Stage is borrowed from the name of a series of paintings by Wiley, an artist best known for his presidential portrait of Barack Obama which today hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. The artists featured in the show are unified by the country in which they live, though they possess widely diverse backgrounds, worldviews and approaches to art making. Make sure your phone and camera batteries are charged when you go out for a winter day in Reno/Tahoe. Cold temperatures drain batteries faster. Galena Creek Regional Park’s winter scene in Reno is a photographer’s playground. The lakeshore of Lake Tahoe is always an awesome spot for photos of the gorgeous winter scenery. If it’s windy, scan the shorelines for frozen sand designs that can form on the snow-covered beaches. Explore. Have a blast.

SPORTS BETTING IN THE SIERRA. By Jaxon Sullivan

Photo this page: Grand Sierra Resort

After years frequenting the same place to watch college tournaments and the Big Game, I ventured out to tour the Reno/ Tahoe area for best bets when it comes to sports betting. Since it’s more fun watching the games with a little wager on the side, here’s a quick overview to get you started. Looking at the digital screens or betting sheets at any sportsbook, the main thing you need to know is the (-) numbers represent the favorites and (+) are for the underdogs.

SF LA

-7.5 +7.5

-165 55.5 O/U +600 55.5 O/U

1

The number in the first column after the team refers to the most common bet, or the “point spread.” One team needs to beat the other team by a certain number of points, or not lose by more than that amount. I placed $10 on LA (+7.5) which meant as long they didn’t lose by more than 8 points, I would double my money less the casino’s 10 percent.

2

The second column is the “money line” which is the easiest because it means you just have to pick the winner of the game. I could win $100 by betting $165 on the favorite, or I could win $600 by betting $100 on the underdog. Moving the decimal point, I bet $10 on long shot LA, to win $60.

3

With 48 TVs and a Slushee Bar, The Zone at MontBleu Resort, Casino & Spa is perfect for chillin’ out when you’re steaming mad at the referees. montbleuresort.com With just about every satellite sports package, watching a Wednesday night UNR game and eating delicious wings at the Tavern Bar inside Lakeside Inn and Casino, was so much better than a crowded sports bar. lakesideinn.com During my annual guy’s trip, I reserved one of the VIP rooms at the William Hill Sports Book at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino. In addition to the private TV, comfortable sofas and restrooms, the proximity to place more bets while watching their giant projection screen ensured a repeat visit. grandsierraresort.com Watching the game is more fun when you have some skin in it, but keep in mind that sports betting is best when it’s solely for entertainment. Bet as little as $2 but never more than you can afford to lose. Just remember, no matter how much you yell and scream at the TV, you can’t change the outcome of the game. However, you can get paid for it.

The third column is the “Over/Under” which refers to the total points scored by both teams. I like defense, so I bet $10 on the Under (this also means I could double my money).

“Prop Bets” are available for big games, allowing you to wager on everything from the length of the National Anthem to the color of the sports drink poured on the winning coach.

An insider’s tip With my three bets in, I settled into a movie theater-style seat in the video stadium at The Book at Harveys Lake Tahoe, Nevada’s only non-smoking race and sportsbook. As LA kicked a field goal at the end of the game to make the final score 30-24, I celebrated gleefully. Despite LA losing, they still covered the point spread. The Under also barely paid off, however my long shot on the money line didn’t. For those scoring at home, I bet $30 on the game and cashed my tickets in for $38. caesars.com Need to place your wager before the Sports Books open? For my early morning English Premier League matches, I use the convenient self-service kiosks at the William Hill Sports Book inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. You can follow all of your games on 40+ HD TVs, ensuring you make those bets before the sun rises and long after it sets. hardrockcasinolaketahoe.com

After a nice day on the slopes, there’s nothing more invigorating than a dip in the ardent waters of Reno/Tahoe. Whether you need to soothe sore muscles, just soak and relax, or benefit from mineral therapy, hot tubs abound this winter.

Natural valley tubs Did you know that the Sierra Nevada mountain range is heavily dotted with geothermal activity? While some of the underground resource is used to create renewable energy for Nevada and California, surface anomalies pop up all over the region pooling mineral-rich waters for all to enjoy. At 1862 David Walley’s Resort in Genoa, you can immerse yourself in five mineral hot springs and a pool heated with geothermal water. The Carson Hot Springs in Carson City features a heated pool and hot tubs, as well as nine private mini tubs. Seven ways to drink and dine after a day on the slopes. By Natasha Bourlin

High elevations often lead to high spirits. Lake Tahoe’s glorious bluebird days are ideal for mountain play then thawing out with a different sort of spirit – of the apres-ski variety. Reminiscing about the day’s epic runs or watching others take their turns on the abundant powder can be more fun while imbibing at these seven Tahoe hot spots that know how to warm up guests from the inside out, with enticing seasonal specials.

Lounging around Cozy up ‘round the fireplace and take in mountain views and Carson Valley vistas from the Bear Trap Lounge at The Ridge Tahoe Resort. Each day from 3 to 6 p.m., bartenders serve seasonal craft brews, wine and comforting cocktails to unwind with. ridgetahoeresort.com Revel in the restaurant’s rustic mountain vibe while watching Warren Miller or other ski and snowboard flicks on their flat-screen TVs, fuel up on comfort foods like tater tots topped with nacho cheese sauce and bacon, or shoot some pool and share tales of your exhilarating day on the slopes.

Tip one back in a tram car With skyscraping peaks like the legendary KT-22, Squaw Valley’s terrain is not for the faint of heart. It’s for snowbound warriors that earn their apres after a day spent coursing down thousands of vertical feet of powdery perfection. squawalpine.com This season check out the new Tram Car Bar on the deck of the Olympic House. Restored from use in the 1970s, it retains the original logos and feel from Squaw’s post-Olympic heyday. As the aerial tram glides up the towering Tram Face, cut the chill inside the new bar with cocktails like their backscratcher, a spicy Moscow mule, plus draft beers, bubbles, wine or daily happy hour specials from 3 to 4 p.m.

34 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

Ethereal imbibing

Off-slope apres

Heavenly Mountain Resort is aptly named, and their apres experiences follow suit. At the top of the gondola, thirsty snow revelers can find the Tamarack Lodge and Bar nestled at 9,150 feet. You can fill up on items from the international food court, ranging from burritos to pho, then drink your boozy vegetables with a mountain Mary. skiheavenly.com

On South Lake Tahoe’s Nevada side, a local’s favorite for happy hour and hanging out is the Fox and Hound. While it’s removed from the resorts, there are plenty of prime peak views from their 7,380-foot elevation vantage point. Head in for their happy hour from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday – Friday and nosh on half-off chicken wings, a giant Bavarian pretzel, or any of their hearty menu items while sipping on spirit-elevating concoctions such as a sugar cookie martini, bourbon bacon hot chocolate or their campfire margarita. foxandhoundtahoe.com

Live music by their house band accompanies offerings from their full bar, and check out their happy hour daily from 3 to 5 p.m. Or, if you can’t get enough of the outdoors, hit the apres ski and street food scene at LAT38, on the rooftop of the California Lodge, but only on weekends, Friday - Sunday.

Swanky sipping After an effervescent day of snow play, a glass of Moët & Chandon makes for a sparkling evening. Every weekend, ski or ride from the Northstar California slopes into the Ritz Carlton Lake Tahoe’s backyard and settle around the outdoor fire pit with a glass of bubbly during their signature Après-Ski Experience, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. ritzcarlton.com

Ravenous mountain dwellers can take their burger challenge while there. Called the menu burger, Fox and Hound’s edible monstrosity consists of all their favorite food items squeezed between buns, from pepperoni pizza and pulled pork to fried eggs and chili cheese garlic fries, plus oh-so much more, served with a side of hot wings – and a salad, naturally. Eat the burger in 60 minutes or less and it’s not only free, you get a commemorative t-shirt, that hopefully has a lot of stretch. Abundant ways to apres ski exist around Tahoe this season, and finding favorites may be a fun sport in itself.

Champagne pairs well with their raw bar offerings such as oysters on the half shell, chilled shrimp cocktails and ceviche, available a la carte from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Down the hill in the Northstar Village, globally renowned restaurateur Michael Mina’s Bourbon Pub Northstar opened this season, bringing alluring apres items like cheddar brats wrapped in puff pastry with jalapeno mustard, plus cocktails, craft brews and domestic wine to folks fresh from the mountain. northstarcalifornia.com

WINNER FOR “BEST SANDWICHES!”

Nothing says Millennial like avocado toast. Whether you love, hate or happen to be a Millennial (guilty!), there is a reason that avocado toast is everywhere. It’s a simple, yet highly customizable and delicious, strangely healthy, openfaced sandwich featuring California’s favorite fruit (yes, avocado is fruit). The name says it all. It’s literally toast, avocado and absolutely anything else you feel like adding. So whether you’re a proud connoisseur or secretly a curious Baby Boomer, here is where you can cut into the latest in green and toasty creations around Reno/Tahoe.

Livin’ likelike a Millennial Livin’ a Millennial

Revive Coffee & Wine in South Lake Tahoe is a local favorite. They offer three varieties of avocado toast: the cracked egg, which turns your toast into a full breakfast; the friendly goat, which adds goat cheese, bacon, and pesto; and the something green, for the purists. Come hungry, because the toasts are piled high. We recommend a knife and fork. revivecoffeewine.com Also in South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Pourhouse offers avocado toast on their small bites menu, though “small bites” is a bit of a misnomer. Enjoy the self-poured wine bar with your Serrano ham avocado toast, piled with pickled onions, Romesco and egg. tahoepourhouse.com Heading north to Reno, we find Great Full Gardens toasting up some goodness. They feature Truckee Sourdough Company’s multigrain ciabatta as the foundation of their trendy tower, complete with radish, tomato, new harvest pea shoots, lemon oil, and … did we say avocado? greatfullgardens.com Another amazing find in Reno is Rounds Bakery serving delicious fresh-baked bagels, breads, donuts, and so much more. They like to pile their avocado on English muffins. On their breakfast menu you’ll find the egg white brekkie, which is an English muffin layered with sliced turkey, egg whites, hummus, and, you guessed it, avocado. Roundsbakery.com Around the north side of the lake is Coffeebar Truckee where you’ll find everything the Millennial food scene prides itself on: local produce, sustainable business practices, and avocado on everything. Their toast comes from a home-made sprouted wheat and is served with an optional poached egg and bacon. coffeebar.com

Keep warm and stay fashionable this season! By Ashley Polan

I

t may be cold outside, but that doesn’t mean you need to give up your style to stay warm this season. With plenty of trendy stops throughout Reno/ Tahoe, you’ll be sure to enjoy shopping in this winter wonderland!

Take it to the floor You don’t have to risk style to stay warm! Roll out the LONG winter coats this season. Whatever style of coat you prefer – trench, fur, puffer … rock them knee-to-floor length! How low can you go? With this trend, the longer the better! I mean, your coat doesn’t have to be dragging on the ground collecting dirt, but it can get pretty close. The jackets pictured here are from the cutest boutiques in the South Lake Tahoe Village Center. Savvy Boutique carries some great trench coats. And the long black fuzzy jacket is from Malena Boutique. Another one of my favorite affordable spots to grab a nice coat is Old Navy at the Outlets at Legends in Sparks. They have a knee-length army green puffer I’ve been eyeing! villagecentertahoe.com; savvylaketahoe.com; malenaboutique.com; outletsatlegends.com

I like big knits and I cannot lie Give me all the big knits this winter. I personally love to find ways to push this trend to the next level. The thicker, the bigger the knit, the better. This style looks amazing on its own with a pair of your favorite denim, booties and hat, or layer under your extra-long trench coat. I found my favorite rust-colored knit sweater from Malena Boutique in South Lake and other great spots to shop for that winter cable, including The Biggest Little Fashion Truck, a mobile boutique serving the

Not your run-of-the-mill superman cape Capes will instantly make your outfit more chic. With many different styles, you’re sure to find a cape you’ll love to wear all season long. This look is best layered over a fitted long sleeve shirt and over-the-knee boots, like I’ve done here with the fur-collared cape from Sidestreet Boutique in Lake Tahoe. Don’t be afraid to add a hat to this style either! It might just be me, but if I need to level up my outfit a hat always seems to do the trick. sidestreetboutique.com

Cool-girl edge in combat boots Combat boots are still trending! Some seem to steer away from this style because they feel combat boots can look a bit hardcore ... but that couldn’t be further from the truth. This trendy style looks amazing with a flirty dress, shaggy fur coat, and other more feminine looks. Mix and match a feminine outfit with the toughened-up look of combat boots for that edge you’ve always wanted. You can find a great selection of combat boots at Savvy Boutique in South Lake Tahoe and Famous Footwear in the Outlets at Legends.

Harmless furs Fur boots, coats, handbags, hats, fur collared tops — if it makes you want to pet it, wear it! Make a statement with a calf-length fur coat and combat boots, or pair your knit sweater with fur-cuffed boots and a furry handbag. I’m sure you’re already picturing ways you’d like to incorporate fur into your outfit throughout the chilly season! Check out Buckle or Dillard’s at The Summit located in South Reno. thesummitreno.com

Top it off with a hat Are beanies or hats ever not a trending accessory during the winter? I think not! Whenever I need to elevate my outfit, I reach for a hat. This season I’ll be rocking thick knit beanies, floppy hats and felt fedoras. Yes, floppy hats are making a comeback and I absolutely adore the black one I found at Savvy Boutique. Not ready to wear a floppy hat? Don’t worry, your felt fedora is still trending! If you’re looking to add this fashion staple to your winter wardrobe, Sierra Belle in midtown is a great spot. Visit Tahoe Nevada Love or Tahoe Heartbeart for a beanie showcasing your love for Reno/Tahoe. shopsierrabelle.com, nomadboutique.com; tahoenevadalove.com; tahoeheartbeat.com The most important trend is what you feel good in! If you’re like me and enjoy pushing your comfort zone when it comes to fashion or simply want to wear what you’re comfortable in, you will find something that fits your winter style in the Sierra. Wear a piece of Nevada with jewelry crafted from local gems. By Annie Flanzraich

N

evada may be known as the Silver State. Still, along with all those precious minerals, there are also precious stones hiding in its austere earth.

“Most of the gemstones are agates and jaspers and turquoise,” says Webb Varnum of The Reno Gem and Mineral Society. “All of them can be found in Northern Nevada.” renorockhounds.com Varnum, a geologist and a graduate of the University of Nevada Reno’s Mackay School of Mining, has spent his life rockhounding through the west coast, including California, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and Mexico. In addition to agates, jasper and turquoise, he also highlighted some less common stones, including dark red garnets from Ely, crystal beryl from Pershing County, and smooth dumortierite. Nevada’s state precious gemstone, the Black Fire Opal, comes from the Virgin Valley in Northern Nevada. It's the only place in North America where the stone can be found in any significant quantity.

Baubles & Bl i n g Of course, the best way to show some local pride is by wearing some of these gems. Luckily, many shops and boutiques in the Reno/Tahoe area offer jewelry featuring the state's stones. Asteria Jewelry Boutique, which recently opened in South Reno, sells jewelry created by local artists with stones such as turquoise. asteriajewelryboutiquereno.com

“I'd love for people to come out, and check out the store, and see what we have,” says owner Joanna Stacher. In Carson City, artisan Denise Jenkins makes pieces with Nevada turquoise and black pebbles tumbled by Lake Tahoe’s gentle currents. See her work at etsy.com/people/metaldreamer. At Trunk Show in Tahoe City, owner and jewelry designer Jaclyn Woznicki makes pieces featuring pyrite, a stone local to the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. She also upcycles many materials to make Lake Tahoe-shaped pendants, including blue acrylic salvaged from the side panels of slot machines. Another Lake Tahoe necklace is made of resin with hand-ground semiprecious stones, mother of pearl, and microplastics that Woznicki collects along the shorelines of Lake Tahoe. tahoetrunkshow.com “I do this in partnership with The League to Save Lake Tahoe as I sponsor the July 5th Tahoe City Beach Clean Up,” Woznicki says. Honey and Goldies owner Lindsay Knowlton got her start making Nevada-shaped jewelry from only Nevada stones. Now, her store in Midtown sources its turquoise, white buffalo, and many other stones from Nevada. honeyandgoldies.com “We buy a lot of our rough turquoise and white buffalo from a family in Tonopah that owns these mines,” Knowlton says. “From there, we cut it ourselves into the turquoise pieces you see on our website and Instagram.” Knowlton also features many pieces of jewelry in the shape of Nevada, including engagement rings and more. “We sure do love our state and take great pride in it!” Knowlton says. While all that glitters may not be gold, there’s plenty of sparkle to be found local to this place. Check out the hills or stores to get a piece that’s your own.

ake Tahoe is now the third location in the world for Hell’s Kitchen, the restaurant based on the hit culinary reality TV series starring Chef Gordon Ramsay. Incorporating gastronomic and design elements from the show, Hell’s Kitchen is a game changer for the Reno/Tahoe food scene. We sat down with Christina Wilson, corporate chef for the Gordon Ramsay Restaurant Group and winner of season 10, Michelle Tribble, winner of season 17 and executive chef at Hell’s Kitchen Las Vegas, and Jayson Behrendt, executive chef at Hell’s Kitchen Lake Tahoe to get the scoop.

25,000 reservations in the first three months. The second location opened in Caesars Palace Bluewaters in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Taken with Tahoe

Hell’s Kitchen was a natural fit for Harveys Lake Tahoe Hotel and Casino, a casino brand that originated in Tahoe, and is now a Caesars property. Hell’s Kitchen occupies the space once held by Sage Room, the original Tahoe fine dining restaurant. Sage Room still exists

The original Hell’s Kitchen opened in Caesars Palace Las Vegas in 2018. The restaurant design made guests feel like they were on the set of the show — complete with a Ramsay-inspired menu; an open kitchen with red and blue sections, reminiscent of the show’s red and blue chef teams; and, a kitchen staff that talked openly in front of the guests (short of the yelling and insults). The popular spot became a fine dining experience unlike any other in the world. The Las Vegas restaurant had an astonishing 50 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

While scouting for a third location, Chef Ramsay was taken with Tahoe. “He fell in love,” says Wilson, “He sent me a picture before he flew out, and was like, ‘be prepared for Tahoe.’ It was immediate.”

upstairs on the 19th floor of Harveys, taking over the space for 19 Kitchen & Bar. Like its counterparts, the Tahoe Hell’s Kitchen features Chef Ramsay’s signature dishes, including beef wellington, lobster risotto, rack of lamb and crispy skin salmon, along with signature craft cocktails such as Notes from Gordon, a green tea-infused gin with house-made peach syrup topped with peach soda, featuring a note from Ramsay with a classic insult; a bit like a fortune cookie for the gastronomic masochistic. Our sample had a note that said, “The pork is so raw it’s still singing Hakuna Matata.” Although the restaurant plays homage to Chef Ramsay and the show, it is in no way a clone of its counterparts. Ramsay intentionally chose Tahoe, and as with all of his restaurants, it honors the uniqueness of the locale. In selecting an executive chef, Ramsay turned to Tahoe local Chef Jayson Behrendt, veteran of the Tahoe food scene with head chef at 19 Kitchen & Bar on his resume. Chef Behrendt will incorporate Ramsay’s signatures in the design of the menu but will also add his own personal flair. “Even more so than Vegas, we are going to have to depend on repeat business and cater to the locals,” Behrendt says. “We want to keep the menu fresh and keep changing it with the seasons.” According to Tribble, each chef adds their own unique touch to the signatures, “It’s not always the same risotto every season, it changes flavors, and same thing in the restaurant. We’ll go from butternut risotto to truffle risotto to tomato saffron risotto. The influence for each chef is there.” In addition to the menu, the look and feel of the restaurant is unique to Tahoe as well. “You will see a lot of nods and respect paid to Sage [Room] and the history,” Wilson adds. getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com 53

Raising the Bar Before finalizing the Tahoe location, Ramsay actually went undercover, donning a hat to cover his face and visiting local restaurants incognito. “I shouldn’t blow his cover, but he wears … ” don’t worry, Chef Wilson, we won’t either. “Gordon would never just plop himself in a city. He will come somewhere and learn it first,” Wilson explains, “He wants to see where he can make things better and help put this area on the map a little more.” While few of us locals likely noticed him, Ramsay was out and about doing research; making sure Hell’s Kitchen would fit in, not contrast or overshadow the existing Tahoe food scene. “This is the first time I’ve ever talked about it out loud, and I’ve been working with Gordon seven years now. He does so much of that kind of thing under the radar,” Wilson adds. With a firm belief that a rising tide raises all ships, Ramsay and his team hope the introduction of a celebrity chef restaurant will help make Tahoe a culinary destination for tourists from around the world. The team strives to highlight and support the innovative restaurants that already exist here. “When you start to get a little more attention brought to the area in general, what’s great is that people aren’t coming in for a night to dine, one time, at Hell’s Kitchen,” says Wilson. “If they come to our restaurant and have an experience at a certain level, they are going to think that of the town … indirectly it will challenge the local chefs to up their game.” The chefs advise booking a reservation well in advance for a table at Hell’s Kitchen. The restaurant already saw 8,000 reservations in the first two weeks. They had a soft opening in December and plan for a grand opening in March. A table reservation during the 5 - 8 p.m. dinner service is currently booking up to four weeks out and could be longer as the opening approaches. So plan ahead! And we’ll see you in Hell’s Kitchen.

The Sierra is home to a vast array of wildlife, both in the sky and on land. And winter is prime time for wildlife viewing in Reno/Tahoe and beyond.

ON LAND One of your best bets for seeing wild horses in the U.S. is right here! You probably didn’t know the majority of wild horses in America live in Nevada, and the Virginia Mountain range, or “Virginia Range,” is where most of those mustangs roam free. A tour into the high desert environs of Nevada guided by Wild Horses of Nevada Photography in the Carson Valley and Dayton or Sonny Boy Tours in Reno is the way to go if you want an experience replete with expert knowledge of Nevada’s mustangs and the native ecosystem. wildhorsesofnevadaphoto. com; renowildhorsetours.com January to April is a fantastic time to see Nevada’s wild horses because it’s cooler and the desert environment won’t bake you. If you’re venturing out without a guide, you have two solid options. Option 1: From Reno, take Interstate 80 eastbound to exit 22 at Lockwood and turn right onto Canyon Way. Mustangs frequent this road and the vicinity. Option 2: From Reno or Carson City, take Interstate 580 to State Route 341 towards Virginia City. For the next several miles and all the way to the Old West town of Virginia City, mustangs can be seen near the road and in the distance. Wild horse and western landscape art lovers may find that special piece at Prism Photographics, located in Carson Valley. The gallery showcases art by world-renowned artist and local resident Joyce Pike. The rugged beauty of the local scenery and wild horses are main subject matter featured in Pike’s artwork. Another fine place to score beautiful Western art pieces is Wild Horse Gallery in Virginia City … you may even spot a wild horse, or two, around town. prismphotographics.com; @ wildhorsewesterndecor

IN THE SKY Have you ever seen a bald eagle in the wild? If not, the entire region offers chances to see this national emblem — especially during the winter months when they soar at lower elevations. The best place to get an eyeful of these majestic creatures is at the 18th annual Eagles & Agriculture event January 23 – 26, when bald eagles descend upon the Carson Valley to feed on the afterbirth produced during calving season at the area’s cattle ranches. Take a guided tour with local photographer John T. Humphrey who specializes in wildlife imagery of eagles, wild horses, bears, wildcats and raptors. What an amazing way to capture the majestic beauty of a memorable trip in the Sierra. If you’re wanting to go explore on your own, head to historic Genoa. In Genoa, hop onto Genoa Lane/State Route 758 and take a drive heading east. In winter months, mainly late January to early February, bald eagles are often spotted in pastures along Genoa Lane. Don’t forget your camera! akawolf.zenfolio.com; carsonvalleynv.org There’s no shortage of options for experiencing the exciting plethora of wildlife around Reno/Tahoe, so get roaming!
