Instaworthy spots abound in the Sierra. Whether you’re looking for a great vantage point to shoot a Tik Tok video or want a quick photo to post alongside your Facebook status, Reno/Tahoe has some amazing views that are sure to get you more followers.

City scapes The twinkling lights of the Biggest Little City make absolutely stunning backgrounds from afar, but if you like to visit inspiring destinations while you create head downtown. The “Believe” sculpture located in City Plaza made it’s way from Burning Man to its permanent home in 2015. And the iconic Reno Arch at the intersection of Virginia Street and Commercial Row is a must. I can’t forget to mention the Midtown Murals — look for more than 80 murals painted by local artists that are colorful and will show off your creative side. My feed tends to stray from sports, but the Reno Aces and Reno 1868 FC games at Greater Nevada Field offer up some nice imagery alongside the excitement of hometown baseball and soccer fun. reno.gov; artspotreno.org; greaternevadafield.com

Want to capture the neon skyline of Reno? Head to University Ridge Park or Peavine Mountain before sunset for spectacular scenery skirted by the most vibrantly colored skies I’ve ever seen.

Lake views What about the beautiful Alpine oasis that is Lake Tahoe? I still remember the first time I rounded the corner driving up Mt. Rose Highway where the trees clear and you get your first sweeping view of Big Blue. It’s enchanting. You’ll get a ton of likes posting photos from just about any vantage point on the Tahoe Rim Trail. And, if you stop at the Mt. Rose Highway Scenic Overlook just four miles outside Incline Village, the vast image that unfolds before you is one of the best around. Want a sand-in-your-toes-relaxing-on-the-beach vibe? Lay your towel down at Sand Harbor, Zephyr Cove Resort or Commons Beach at Camp Richardson where the crystal clear waters and giant boulders can be your focus. parks.nv.gov; zephyrcove.com; camprichardson.com

Wildflowers and waterfalls When I was a girl, I remember walking around our house during the spring and relishing the vibrant petals welcoming warmer weather. It was always a little ritual of mine and I still continue to do it to celebrate the changing of the season. While I have a few spots around my yard, the Sierra is flooded with colorful hues this time of year, along with streaming waters from the melting snowpack.

Reno was established right next to the first bridge to cross the Truckee River in the late 1800s. By the mid-1900s, Reno had become famous for gaming & nightlife, and the river that ran through it took a back seat to the glitz and glamour of downtown. In the 1990s, the city created The Raymond I. Smith Truckee River Walk, which brought new attention to Reno’s scenic river corridor. Today, local merchants are proud to welcome you back to The Riverwalk District to celebrate the beautiful place where Reno began. Reno has long been known for its constant reinvention of itself since the beginning of t

In his 1871 book, "Roughing It," Mark Twain famously described Lake Tahoe as “surely the fairest picture the whole world affords.” Almost 75 years later, Walter Van Tilburg Clark called Reno the “city of trembling leaves,” in his novel of the same name. Reno/ Tahoe’s beauty and complexity have ignited the creativity of writers in all generations, so it would be impossible to list all of them in a single article. However, it is possible to recommend a few recent reads that capture the region's history, spirit and imagination.

Reno reads From fiction to non-fiction, a variety of Reno authors have captured pieces of the city’s essence. Learn how the city transformed from “Sin Central,” as Garrison Keillor observed, to "The Biggest Little City in the World,” in local historian Alicia Barber’s book “Reno's Big Gamble: Image and Reputation in the Biggest Little City.” Barber chronicles the city's changing fortunes from the days of the Comstock Lode through the early 2000s. For a closer look at the history of the downtown Reno Riverwalk District, pick up a copy of “Images of America: Reno's Riverwalk District,” written by Courtney and Chris Meredith, owners of award-winning local design, marketing and advertising agency, Design on Edge. Like “Reno's Big Gamble,” “Reno's Riverwalk District” covers the period between the mid-1800s to almost present day. No list of Reno authors would be complete without the mention of Guy Clifton, one of the city's favorite writers who tells the stories of Nevada and Nevadans. Clifton's written six books, including a history of the Reno Rodeo; two volumes of “You Know You’re A Nevadan If … ;” “Dempsey In Nevada,” about former heavyweight boxing champion Jack Dempsey’s days in the Silver State; “Johnson-Jeffries: Dateline Reno,” a look at the 100th anniversary of the famous heavyweight title fight; and, “Reno,” a photographic history of Reno for Arcadia Publishing’s “Images of America” series. More focused on the present than the past? For an almost definitive list of the region’s best experiences, read “100 Things to Do in Reno Before You Die,” by Mikalee Byerman. From art experiences to outdoor adventures to epicurean delights, Byerman dishes up itineraries and ideas to explore Reno and its surrounding areas. Or, escape reality with Claire Vaye Watkins’ 2012 book of short

stories set in Reno, “Battleborn,” which won The Story Prize, among other awards. In 2012, the National Book Foundation named her a "5 under 35" honoree.

Tahoe tales Perhaps it’s the vastness and depth of Lake Tahoe that inspires many authors to write mysteries set in or around it. Many of the lake’s authors and stories focus on the unknown waiting to be known. To solve the case with Tahoe’s own Sherlock, Owen McKenna, check out one of Todd Borg’s 17 books in his “Owen McKenna Tahoe Mysteries” series. The books follow McKenna, a former homicide inspector in San Francisco who moved to South Lake Tahoe after a tragic event. Borg published the most recent “Tahoe Mystery, Tahoe Deep,” in 2019. Follow the fictional Rachel Winters, a Lake Tahoe resident frequently accompanied by her dog, Bella, who finds herself embroiled in murder, mystery and romance in the Tahoe Basin and beyond in the four-part “Mountaingirl Mysteries” series. The series is the brainchild of South Lake Tahoe Author Jennifer Quashnick, who holds a master's degree in environmental science and health and has spent more than 15 years advocating for scientifically supported policy making to protect Lake Tahoe’s environment and rural communities. Perri O’Shaughnessy, the author of 12 Nina Reilly legal thrillers, is actually the pen name for two sisters, Mary and Pamela O’Shaughnessy. These passionate thrillers are set against the lush Lake Tahoe landscape and tell the story of attorney Nina Reilly, another Tahoe transplant from San Francisco. While solving these mysteries before the protagonists do may be a challenge, finding their books is easy. In Reno, head to Sundance Books and Music on California Avenue, or Grassroots Books near Midtown. In South Lake Tahoe, try Keynote Used Records & Books or Bookworks, a used bookstore that supports the Tahoe Family Resource Center. sundancebookstore.com; grassrootsbooks.com; tahoefrc.org When you want to dig into a good book this spring, try one of these local authors for a fascinating tale that’s close to home.

Matter Splatter invites visitors of all ages to take matter into their own hands. In this inventive, hands-on exhibition coming to The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum, visitors can explore the materials used to produce some of the most advanced technology in existence today. In this exciting exhibition, visitors learn about topics such as:

Biomimicry

Investigate natural materials and see how they have inspired creative solutions to everyday challenges. View human-made materials through a microscope and compare them to natural materials.

Conductivity

Experiment with a variety of materials, including liquids and solids, and see which have the most conductive properties or generate the most resistance/heat.

Elastic Collisions

Bounce a steel ball bearing on a variety of materials to see which returns more energy to the ball.

Ferro Fluids

Use magnets to interact with ferro fluid, a liquid that contains fine metal particles, to see spikey magnetic fields.

Non-Newtonian Fluid

The oozing centerpiece of this exhibition gives visitors the chance to get hands-on with slime.

Density

Compare the densities of various liquids by observing non-mixing liquids of different colors and densities within a clear cylinder. Whether you want to dig deep into the field of material science or just play with ooey gooey slime, this exhibition focuses on what matters most ... learning and fun! Matter Splatter opens at The Discovery on May 16, 2020 and will be on exhibit through mid-September. For more information, visit nvdm.org

Other sports like kayaking are adding three women’s event while eliminating three men’s.

Hit a home run America’s pastime returns to the world stage this year after a two-Olympic hiatus. To get in the literal swing of things, head to Tommy’s Grandstand in Sparks, home to multiple batting cages and other fun forms of family entertainment. Helmets and bats are included when you sign up to practice your hardball or softball. tommysgrandstand.com To really get in the spirit of things, head to Greater Nevada Field for the Reno Aces’ “Go for the Gold Night” on July 25. The stadium will transform in homage to the Olympics, host their own minigames, give away gold Aces medals and more. Entertainment aplenty that won’t break the bank in the Sierra. By Jason Lopez

Whether you want to catch an open mic night, do a little dancing or enjoy the arts, Reno/Tahoe is a mecca for inexpensive entertainment. Here are a few of my favorites you should definitely checkout!

Be a star Let your wild side out at a variety of open mic nights, where you can belt out your favorite tunes, jam on instruments, wax poetic, or even become a comedian for a night! On Tahoe’s south shore, Classic Cue Sports Bar & Grille opens their mic up to entertainers every Thursday at 9 p.m. Other cheap thrills here include pool tables, air hockey, foosball, darts, multiple TV screens and video games for the kiddies. In the Zephyr Cove neighborhood, Casey’s – An American Cantina gets rockin’ with the east side’s finest open mic entertainment every Monday at 6:30 p.m. All types of talent are welcome and Casey’s serves delish American and Mexican fare, along with the self-proclaimed “coldest beer in Tahoe.” Lake Tahoe’s west shore is lowkey when it comes to nightlife, but every Wednesday night West Shore Pizza opens their mic to talent while they cook tasty pies. tahoeclassiccue.com; caseystahoe.net; pizzatahoe.com In Carson City, the locally legendary open mic night at A to Zen Gifts and Thrift Store goes down Fridays at 7 p.m. — catch musicians, poets, magicians and anyone in the mood for sharing their talent. It’s open to all ages and children are often among the entertainers. Centrally located in downtown Reno, Pignic Pub & Patio hosts an open mic night starting around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays that attracts a crowd. What I love about Pignic is that you can BYOG – meaning Bring Your Own Grillables. That’s right. Pignic allows patrons to barbecue their own food – as long as the food’s original supermarket packaging has not been opened. Pig out with your mic out! @a.tozen.9; pignicpubandpatio.com

Live music, line dancing and art If you’ve never been to Genoa Bar, it’s the most archaic drinking establishment in Nevada and I highly recommend it. From May to October, their Friday Porch Parties feature the best live music in the quaint town of Genoa. Here you can enjoy great tunes while tipping one back and chatting with a stranger in the very same spot that Teddy Roosevelt or Mark Twain once did! genoabarandsaloon.com 32 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

E N T E R TA I N M E N T Learn to line dance for free! Slip on your cowboy boots and join the Daisy Duke Dancers at The Grand Country Music Night inside Reno’s Grand Sierra Resort. Every Friday and Saturday at 10:30 p.m., country tunes hit the air and two Daisy Duke Dancers begin strutting various country line dancing steps on stage. Then most folks follow along, while some (like me for instance) do their best to follow along. grandsierraresort.com When it comes to enjoying art and socializing, it doesn’t get much cooler than First Thursdays at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno. Every month, from 5 to 7 p.m., folks gather to enjoy music, dancing and the museum’s impressive displays. Ten bucks gets you admission, a drink coupon for locally brewed craft beer or wine, and small bites. Now that’s some bang for your buck. nevadaart.org

Trip out on Burning Man art I’ve never been to Burning Man but I’ve enjoyed some of the most well known art pieces ever to grace The Playa — and you can too — for free in Reno. Reno is home to the largest permanent collection of Burning Man art anywhere on the planet. The best way to see this fab art is by self-guided tour of Reno’s Playa Art Trail using online resources courtesy of Art Spot Reno. artspotreno.com While you’re here, learn some new dance moves, be a star for an audience, or enjoy an evening of art … the best part is you don’t have to fork out all of your hard-earned cash to have a good time. That’s what makes Reno/Tahoe such an outstanding place. There’s so much to do and you won’t break the bank to experience the greatness the area has to offer. So what are you waiting for? Go get some greatness! Photos this page: Genoa Bar (Jeramie Lu), Reno Playa Park (Sydney Martinez), Nevada Museum of Art

Even though I’m not getting married, not even close actually, I’m here for the party, especially if it’s in the Sierra. This spring in Reno/Tahoe, brides can take a break from wedding arrangements and celebrate finding love with their bridesmaids, who probably deserve a little break as well. Lake Tahoe offers wellness experiences to unwind before the big day, while Reno/ Tahoe’s vibrant bar scene might make brides question why they’re relinquishing their freedom so easily. Allow yourself a moment to breathe and embrace what locals lovingly call “Tahoe Time” by starting your getaway with an alpine yoga class from one of the region’s eclectic studios. During a deux OMies class, which begins July 1, greet the day with sun salutations while flowing on a stand-up paddleboard, and end with a true Tahoe-style savasana by zenning out on the lightly rolling waves. AROUND THE WORLD IN 28 MEALS By Annie Flazraich

40 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

W

hile it took Jules Verne's characters 80 days to circle the globe in his 1872 adventure novel “Around the World in Eighty Days,” you can make the same trip in just 28 meals by touring the world cuisine available in Reno/Tahoe's restaurants. So, hop in your metaphorical hot air balloon, and get ready for a culinary journey.

IN SEARCH OF UMAMI We’ll start our tour with Asian cuisine, of which there is no shortage of options in the region. Of course, there’s Reno’s signature dish: All You Can Eat Sushi, which can be found at dozens of locations. To try one of the longest-standing AYCE spots, head over to Sushi Pier. sushipier1.com Then, venture out to tantalize your taste buds. Kauboi Izakaya is Reno’s first restaurant focused on ancient Japanese charcoal grilling. At Tahoe Hot Pot in Stateline, diners can enjoy traditional Japanese hot pot meals and Thai dishes in a relaxed, family owned eatery. For innovative dishes, including boiling crab, crawfish and seafood, head over to Crawfish Asian Cuisine. Craving Thai flavors? Head to The Basil in Carson City. A long-time community favorite, this restaurant recently reopened and now serves dishes made with techniques from Thailand, the home country of all six owners. myshabu.net; crawfishasiancuisine.com; thebasilrestaurant.com

CURRY UP SOME FLAVOR Next, we'll head west to explore the flavors of India. At West Street Market in downtown Reno, you can find two sister restaurants serving different dishes at different times of the day. For lunch, try the light and flavorful vegetarian and vegan Indian fare at Maya’s South Indian Cuisine. By night, the space transforms into Thali, Reno’s only fully organic Indian restaurant. At Lake Tahoe, get a taste of Nepal and India at Shangrila Himalayan Kitchen. weststreetmarketreno.com; thalireno.com; shangrilahimalayan.com

Photo previous page: Calafuria; Photo this page: Artemis Lakefront Cafe

LAVASH, PITA AND INJERA Continuing on our quest, we’ll journey to Africa and the Mediterranean. On the south shore of Lake Tahoe, visit either Artemis Mediterranean Grill or Artemis Lakefront Café for Greek and Mediterranean flavors. Craving a falafel or gyro in Reno? Surely, it would be best if you stopped at Suri's Mediterranean Kitchen. If you're not afraid to eat with your hands, Zagol is a tactile Ethiopian cuisine experience that you won’t soon forget. artemismediterraneangrill.com; artemislakefrontcafe.com; surisreno. com; zagolofreno.com

MANGIA-MIA It’s a-boot time that we traveled a bit north to Italy. Dine on traditional Italian fare, including pasta and wood-fired fish and meats in Calafuria’s homey, midcentury digs in Midtown. Nevada’s capitol, Carson City, boasts two must-try Italian restaurants. Dig into classic dishes and pizza at Mangia Tutto or taste what Chef Mark Estee’s cooking from ingredients sourced from the local farmers and purveyors at Cucina Lupo. In South Lake Tahoe, Primo’s Italian Bistro serves southern Italian classics and northern specialties too. calafuriareno.com; mangiatuttopizzeria.com; cucinalupo.com; primositalianbistro.com

IT’S ALL EUROPEAN TO ME Let’s head north, shall we, and head onward into continental Europe. Start with some lighter fare, savory or sweet, from Creative Crepes at Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe. Then, for an entree, try the alpine cuisine at La Fondue in Incline Village, or the French vibe at Z Bistro in Carson City. Of course, what’s a meal without a sweet finish? For a taste of Austria’s best deserts, scope the display case at Franz’s Backstube Austrian Bakery in Reno. creativecrepestahoe.com; tahoefondue.com; atzbistro.com; franzsbackstube.com

BASQUE IN THE EXPERIENCE Before we journey to the United Kingdom, let's take a detour to the Basque country, between France and Spain. For more than a century, the Basques have been closely tied to sheepherding in Nevada. As a result, our region features many uniquely Nevada Basque restaurants.

For the classic family style dining experience, check out Louis Basque Corner or the newly re-opened Santa Fe Hotel in Reno, or J. T. Basque Bar & Dining Room in Gardnerville. Or, for paella and chorizo, go to Villa Basque Café in Carson City. louisbasquecorner.com; santafereno.com; jtbasquenv.com; villabasquecafe.com

UNITED CUISINES There’s no sign of Brexit or Megixt at the U.K.inspired restaurants in Reno/Tahoe. For a Scottish influenced dining experience, order a pint and a shepherd’s pie at MacDuff 's Public House in South Lake Tahoe. In Reno, O'skis Pub & Grille dishes up the city’s largest selection of corned beef dishes in an Irish pub atmosphere. macduffspub.com; oskispub.net

MUY DELICIOSO For the final leg of our trip, let's go across the pond and head south to Latin America. In Reno, Sabor Latin Cuisine dishes up Peruvian, Argentinian, and Mexican food. In Midtown, the newly opened Churrasco Brazilian Steakhouse treats diners to an unforgettable rodizio experience with 15 succulent types of meat and 50 sides. In South Lake Tahoe, don’t miss La Promesa’s fish tacos and homemade baked goods. For Salvadorian cuisine, La Santaneca in Carson City is the place to dine. @sabornv; churrascobr.com From classic comfort food to avant-garde cuisine, it's all available in Reno/Tahoe. TEAM BRUNCH With stunning views, bottomless mimosas and comfort food, brunch always wins. By Tiara Wasner

Our favorite brunch spots include everything from tried-and-true American classics to island-inspired specialties, modern comfort food, and adult beverages. Not in the mood for brunch? We have you covered. Swing by one of our favorite coffee shops, Clydes Coffee Roasting Co, for a latte and scone before heading out on an epic adventure. clydescoffee.com Back to brunching...

Brunching Around Lake Tahoe Typically, I pick the best brunch spot based on who I’m with and what I’m in the mood for. I don't know about you, but when I'm brunching with my girls, we pick the restaurant based on two words — bottomless mimosas. If we’re on the South Shore, Kalani's is our go-to. Aside from mimosas, their island-inspired brunch menu will leave you planning your next vacation. Order the mahi-mahi florentine or kahlua pig benedict and thank us later. kalanis.com

With Mother's Day right around the corner, The Bistro at Edgewood is an ideal place to celebrate mom or any special occasion. Between spectacular views, an excellent menu selection, and perfectly curated wine list, The Bistro is top notch. While the menu offers various traditional brunch options, I recommend living on the edge. Order something you wouldn't make at home like chicken and waffles,

Opening in 1978, it's safe to say the Fire Sign Cafe is not only a Tahoe landmark but worth the wait. For those looking for a traditional breakfast, this place is for you. Try the Westshore special or french toast. Several gluten-free options are also available. firesigncafe.com Rosie's Cafe has been a Tahoe City staple for 30 years and the vintage flair will make you feel like you're stepping back in time. Rosie’s Cafe keeps dishes simple and traditional. Fuel up for the day with the all American breakfast or "create your own" scramble or omelet. You'll leave feeling full and ready to conquer any adventure. rosiescafe.com Shacked up in a cozy lakeside cabin? Drool-Worthy Brunch in Reno If you find yourself in Reno, Roundabout Grill should be at the top of your list. Especially if you’re a foodie at heart, like me. They had me at chef-inspired comfort food. Recommended dishes include the crab & artichoke benedict, Hawaiian french toast or hanger steak & eggs. Did I mention bottomless mimosas and bloody marys! roundaboutgrill.com Not only is Midtown Eats insta-worthy, but they’re living up to their motto, “Damn Good Food & Drinks.” It’s that legit. The menu isn’t overwhelming with options, but there’s a little something for everyone. Make sure to try the BLTA, veggie benedict, or atomic burger. My mom always said never pass on a signature cocktail and, while I’m a fan of the pineapple mule, I’ve heard the Cheney Street sour, their version of a whiskey sour, is the best in town. Just saying. midtowneatsreno.com Before heading home, let us introduce you to a little hidden gem called Daughters Cafe. Know before you go, the menu isn’t extensive, they will treat you like family, and their offerings change based on availability and season. You can guarantee your food will be fresh, delicious and made from the heart. My mouth is watering thinking about their apple, goat cheese and walnut omelet, beignets, and eggs in a hole with apple doughnuts. daughterscafe.com It’s truly hard when it comes to narrowing down a favorite brunch spot. Each place is unique. However, we can all agree on one thing — there are several enjoyable places to brunch in Reno/Tahoe. You really can't go wrong. Happy brunching!

A wonderful thing happens when the food and the actual food makers live near each other. The chefs, the beef, the pork, the berries... they're all neighbors. Even the distance between barley and barrel is closer than most folks' morning commute. This kind of proximity transforms a typical meat-'n-taters meal into a spirited outing of eating, imbibing and laughs. Looking for a different kind of foodie fling? Make plans to visit Carson Valley's legendary chefs, distillers, growers and resident critters this weekend.

The best small plates in Reno/Tahoe. By Jen Peng

After a day enjoying the great adventures the area has to offer, there’s nothing better than celebrating your achievements with friends over a few drinks and some tasty bites. Sharing is caring, and here are my favorite picks for some of the best small plates, bites and appetizers in the Sierra.

Caprese Salad

Tasty tidbits around Lake Tahoe Enjoy tasty cocktails and small bites at Taste at the Loft Tahoe. Everything is American tapas-style and meant to be shared. My favorite libation is the sim sala bim cocktail, their take on a margarita, which pairs nicely with quite a few dishes: the ceviche with big juicy chunks of yellowtail mixed with mango and avocado salsa; the honey bourbon-glazed pork belly skewers; and the perfectly crispy tamarind duck tacos. For the ultimate in comfort food, elevated, order their gruyere and cheddar grilled cheese dippers with a hearty tomato bisque — cut into wedges for easy sharing. thelofttahoe.com

Small culinary gems in Carson City Part of the farm-to-table movement, Gather is known for elevated comfort food and craft cocktails. I love the tomato and wild mushroom bruschetta, which comes with a side of marinated olives. The deviled eggs are perfect bites of goodness, with black truffle oil and locally made pate. The caprese salad is fresh and delicious, and features locally sourced tomatoes and mozzarella. Be sure to add on an order of homemade meatballs, made with locally sourced beef and pork, and oh so tasty. gathercc.com Visit Battle Born Social, a small plates cocktail bar and tasting room, to eat, drink and be social. A must is their Social cheese fries, smothered in beer cheese sauce, queso fresco, pickled jalapeno and crispy cheese curds. Parmesan calamari is a perfect blend of crispy and tender. Add on sliders (I recommend the locally raised Bentley beef ) and an order of battle born brussels with pork belly and

balsamic onions; you just might have to order another delicious cocktail or two to wash it down. battlebornsocial.com

Biggest little bites in Reno South Reno’s Twisted Fork is known for their creative take on traditional favorites. With a big-small plate format, you can easily sample a few. Be sure to order their jalapeno and tequila fondue, a delicious, gooey mix of Manchego, jack and mozzarella, white wine and tequila. The sticky Berkshire pork ribs will have you licking your fingers. For something a bit lighter, ceviche hits the spot — I’m a fan of the tuna ceviche, which is bright and delicious, while vegetarians will dig the cauliflower version. They also have a great happy hour with $6 plates and $4 drinks. twistedforkreno.com In the heart of the Riverwalk District, Sierra St. Kitchen & Cocktails serves a delicious assortment of small plates, creative cocktails, wines and beers. I recommend their scallops, seared beautifully with a citrus beurre blanc sauce and celery root salad. Goat cheese fans will love the bacon-wrapped dates, Crimini stuffed mushrooms and mac and cheese, as they all feature the tart, earthy cheese, and are perfect for sharing. Their Sierra Selection also allows you to pick the perfect combination of four small plates. Your taste buds will thank you! sierrastkitchen.com With so many great options for small bites and drinks in Reno/Tahoe, grab a few friends, pull up some bar stools and share away! 52 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

I

t’s the beginning of a new decade, so it’s only fitting that many trends dawning the runway look back on the past. We’ve seen styles popping up from the 50s, 70s, and even the Renaissance period! Here are the top five trends this spring and local vintage shops where you can shop these looks.

Beyond-the-beach straw bags It’s time to put that leather tote aside and opt for a lighter alternative. Amp up your spring outfit with a statement-making straw bag. Bring the beach to the office by pairing a straw crossbody bag with a pair of your favorite black slacks and white blouse or turn heads on the street with a belted straw bag over an oversized shirt. The Nest located in Reno is a great spot to shop straw bags! They have an awesome selection of bags, vintage dresses, home goods, and more. You’ll find yourself traveling to different eras through the selection of true vintage styles they have on hand. If you’d rather wear something made from this era, check out Karma Tahoe in Incline Village where they carry a large variety of newer, gently used pieces. thenestreno.com; karmatahoe.com

Vacation vibes crochet We’re not talking about your Grandma’s crochet, here. Don’t be afraid to bare a little skin in this loosely knit fabric. This season the crochet trend will take the form of skin-baring crops, bra tops, and long crochet dresses with plunging necklines. Keep it cool in this stylish fabric made for more than just beach cover ups. Check out Pass it On Thrift in Tahoe City or Jackpot Vintage in Kings Beach for some great crochet finds. @passitonthrift; @1jackpot

All about that 70s flare If you’ve been wondering when bootcut and bell-bottom styles were going to make their comeback, get ready! We continue to see this trend pop up on the runaway and the streets. Make a light wash flare pop with a black knit top or basic tank, or rock the denim-on-

denim look with a bell-bottom cut, denim button-up and bold-colored skinny belt. Finding a good pair of flare pants can be a daunting task but you can guarantee you’ll find the perfect pair at Junkee Clothing Exchange located in Midtown. Not only do they have a large selection of vintage styles, the eclectic vibe makes this spot a must-go when visiting Reno. Just down the street is Bad Apple Vntg, another shop you should have on your list. They have a small selection of vintage pieces but are one of my favorite spots for denim. junkeeclothingexchange.com; badapplevntg.com

Victorian ruffled collars We’re getting renaissance vibes with this trend! Add some ruffles to your blouse this spring. Keep it sweet and simple with a ruffled bib or go bold with a large, multi-tier neck ruffle. Look trendy and sophisticated in this style of blouse paired with high-waisted flare jeans, a pleated midi skirt or wide-leg trousers. With primarily western style pieces, the Golden Jackal located in Reno is a great spot to shop for a statement-making collar. golden-jackal.myshopify.com

Polka dotted This flirty feminine pattern has been around since the 20s and after about five decades took a backseat in the fashion industry, until now. Polka dots are back and bolder than ever! Freshen up the trend with a large polka dot print on a maxi dress or dip your toes into the trend with a sweet polka dot-patterned blouse. The first two shops that immediately come to mind when I think polka dots are Vivian’s Vintage and Vogue in Truckee and Labels Consignment Boutique in Reno. Both stores have a huge selection of feminine styles to choose from so you can be sure to find a nice polka dotted piece at either stop. @uniqueboutiquevivian’svintageandvogue; labelsreno.com

S ust a inabili ty With climate change being one of the biggest issues we face, the greatest trend is the movement to sustainable fashion. Simply put, sustainable fashion is purchasing from companies with “nice-to-theEarth practices” and buying items that you plan to get many wears out of. Shopping vintage plays a huge role in making fashion more sustainable and reducing our global footprint. With so many trends extending through past eras, rest easy knowing you can still be “on trend” and shop sustainably. If you’ve ever shopped vintage or consignment you understand you’ll have to dig to find these trends, but that’s what makes it fun! It’s always a treasure hunt shopping vintage but the finds will make it worth your while.

SPECIAL FEATURE

Protecting Tahoe from Plastics By Natasha Bourlin

In just one lone cove of Lake Tahoe in summer 2018, approximately 600 pounds of trash was cleaned up by scuba divers. That’s right: 600 pounds. In one cove. Imagine what’s underneath the rest of Tahoe’s 72-mile circumference … Two Tahoe residents are about to lead a team and find out. Filmmaker and founder of nonprofit organizations Clean Up the Lake (DBA pending) and Clean Up the Cayes Colin West has partnered with Mike Meunier, owner of Tahoe Dive Center in Stateline, to circumvent the freshwater alpine jewel underwater in a massive, unprecedented effort to rid the lake of trash. Every inch of Tahoe’s underwater shoreline will be explored by the plastic-seeking pioneers while strapped with scuba gear. Cleaners will be integrated on the beaches, as well. Their endeavor may be the largest clean-up effort in Tahoe’s history. It’s a gallant endeavor considering Tahoe’s size — one that cannot be undertaken alone.

Drive to dive Lake Tahoe is more than just a spectacular sight — one that mesmerizes, entertains and inspires. Residents teem with passion and protectiveness for their alpine home. Visitors come from around the world to gaze into its extraordinarily clear waters and bask on its multitude of picturesque beaches. When enjoying the lake, Tahoe’s immense rocks, marine life, watercraft and sandy bottoms are all the visuals people should enjoy … not a mounting stockpile of trash. Because it’s more than just aesthetics, it’s of extreme importance to keep Tahoe clean. 58 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

Largest lakewide cleanup in history gets underway this summer.

For residents, visitors and the abundant area wildlife, the lake serves as the primary source of drinking water. While global research is still ongoing on any adverse effects of ingesting even microscopic amounts of plastics, a side of microplastics is certainly not something anyone orders with their iced tea. The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) states, “Plastic debris can come in all shapes and sizes, but those that are less than five millimeters in length (or about the size of a sesame seed) are called ‘microplastics.’” In a nutshell, microplastics are broken down fragments of larger, likely discarded plastic pieces. “With tourism increasing . . . I decided it was time to make a difference in our own backyard. Tahoe appears to be pristine and beautiful, but under the surface, there are quite a few issues going on with pollution,” says West. Inspired by the aforementioned load of cove trash and recent research on the alarming amount of microplastics in and around the lake found by the University of California, Davis — nearly every portion of Tahoe they inspected had them — Meunier and West, along with a specially selected diving team, will begin June 1, 2020. Some of the trash dates back decades.

Pristine from the inside out West and Meunier will have between 2 to 6 divers behind them each day, cleaning anything they miss on their 72-mile swim. Heavy lift items and hot spots for trash will get a GPS pinpoint that the organization will use in the near future. The goal is remove heavy lift items in 2021, and continue to monitor heavy trash areas around the

lake or "hot spots" to send additional divers for cleanups, and keep a close watch to see if current tourism is depositing excess trash in these areas.

A Napa-Style Market & Deli in the Heart of Lake Tahoe

It will be completed in multiple stages until the entire perimeter has been cleared of litter. This project will also be captured on film, as part of a feature documentary entitled “Make a Difference,” focusing on international plastic pollution and the people attempting to combat it. The duo is currently working with state agencies in Nevada, with plans to also work with California agencies this fall, plus establishing partnerships with research facilities to collect data on the trash they find to understand and find solutions for the issue. A Gofundme page was started to help raise an additional $400,000 for the entire project. Volunteers to join in the effort are also being sought out. Taking care of exquisite Lake Tahoe is a project everyone can be proud to take part in. charity.gofundme.com/o/en/ campaign/cleanupthelake

othing quite beats the calming, yet equally invigorating, aroma of a vibrant flowers basking in the sun’s rays. With plants sprouting and flowers in full bloom in the Sierra, here’s a look at everything essential oils including where you can see the plants being grown, places that bottle locally and some artists doing fun things with botanicals.

See the plants Stop and smell the roses, and the lavender, and the violets. Even though the Nevada state flower is the almighty sagebrush, there are many indigenous plants producing impressive springtime blossoms. Take a stroll through a public garden to get your flower fix at Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Garden or the Rose Garden in Idlewild Park in Reno. The North Lake Tahoe Demonstration Garden at Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village is a great place to learn more about native flora and fauna. washoecounty.us; demogarden.org In the wild, explore the treks of the Tahoe Rim Trail including the Galena Falls, Big Meadow and Mount Rose Summit trailheads. Here you’ll gander upon fields of beautiful flowers with absolutely stunning backdrops. Or, head to Lake Forest Beach in Tahoe City for some beauty on the shores of Big Blue. 60 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

Bottled locally If you’re like me, I absolutely love to capture sensory tidbits from the places I visit to take home. There are several local apothecaries and shops that make some great products using locally sourced ingredients. At Replenish Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe the scents are fantastic in their essential oil center. Be sure to sniff out their Lake Tahoe-shaped oil diffusers for the perfect way to spread some botanical love. replenishtahoe.com Truckee Meadows Herbs and Remedies in Reno sells amazing essential oils and floral wares. Also in Reno, head to Mandala Massage Supply and Apothecary for pure products made with care. And, you can get sudsy with the goods from Tahoe Mountain Soap Company in South Lake Tahoe. truckeemeadowherbs.com; mandalamassagesupply.com; tahoemountainsoap.com How about some spa and salon treatments with flowery bliss? Imagine Salon in South Lake offers a relaxation service including a hair treatment by Aveda using botanicals that strengthen and hydrate. At Pantry Products in downtown Reno, they create handmade small batch products that are chemical free and made with some serious love for the environment and body. They even have a Pantry Products Subscription Box, so you can have the goodness shipped direct to you every other month. imaginesalontahoe.com; shoppantryproducts.com

Budding artists At Botanical Arts Company in South Lake Tahoe, they really take the beauty of botanicals to a whole new level with amazing displays and decor. Inside this cozy cabin, you can also pickup any art supplies you may have forgotten and have some creative moments while you’re here. @botanicalartscompany

Whether it be to enlighten your mood, rid your body of a funky ailment, or just to enjoy the sweet scents of nature, essential oils and botanicals have tremendous powers. While you’re visiting Reno/Tahoe get an essence boost and brings some home with you to enjoy well into the future.
