fter losing out on yet another bidding war, this time when a house they loved sold last month for almost $200,000 over the asking price, Meredith Blunt’s family will soon be leaving the York Region community they have grown to love.

“I’m really sad to leave. We’ve made really nice friends in Aurora. It’s a nice town. We’re really disappointed. The conversations we will have with our friends here will be tough.

I’m not looking forward to telling them that we’re moving,” said Blunt, an artist and stayat-home mom, who lives in a semi-detached rented home with her husband, Matt Clark, and their children Bronwyn, 8, and Elliott, 5.

“But we definitely can’t afford $800,000 to $1 million for a detached house and $700,000 for a townhome sounds insane to me.”

The family moved to Aurora from Nova Scotia four years ago so Blunt, a native of Richmond Hill, could be close to her parents in Markham and take advantage of employment opportunities for Clark, a software developer.

They have been left shocked by housing prices in Aurora, where the average price is now $941,068 and requires a household income of $162,741, according to a report released last month by Toronto-area webbased realty service TheRedPin Brokerage.

It’s a stunning change from Halifax, where in 2007 they bought a two-bedroom-plusden condo for $117,000 and later purchased a three-bedroom century home in Dartmouth for $180,000.

They now pay $1,700 plus utilities for their rented home.

About 13 months ago, the family, which has an annual household income of more than $100,000, became serious about buying a house in Aurora.

Working with a realtor, they have seen more than 30 homes and put offers in on nine detached and semi-detached houses.

They were outbid every time, even though their budget climbed from $500,000 to $700,000.

Last month, they stretched themselves even further in an attempt to buy a house they fell in love with, a 35-year-old bungalow listed for $625,00.

They were one of 16 bids, hopeful their offer of $720,000 would be enough.

But a Toronto investor secured the deal with a bid of $800,000.

“My parents were going to help us out.

Now it’s empty and up for lease.”

Clark blames soaring prices on a combination of low interest rates and increasing foreign and domestic investment.

The market has left him wondering whether he and Blunt made a mistake moving their family here.

“We made a decision that would make sense in a normal market but things aren’t normal right now,” he said.

“It’s terribly hard (to leave Aurora). It’s what we don’t want to do. It’s our last resort

but it’s the only rational choice left.”

They are thinking of moving to the Kitchener-Waterloo area, where they can buy a detached home downtown on a new light rapid line in the $450,000 range and which offers a technology hub for Clark, future employment opportunities for Blunt and appealing post-secondary options for when their children grow up.

Families in York Region, both first-time buyers and those trying to move to larger homes to accommodate their growing families, are struggling in today’s over-heated market, real estate broker Kate Carcone with Aurora’s Re/Max Hallmark Group Realty said.

“In my eight years of real estate, I have never seen a faster, more furious pace of movement in the single-family home market. It is a market that for the last 18 months has suffered from a shortage of inventory,” she said.

“York Region has been at the centre stone of a buying frenzy as it becomes more and more popular to young early-stage families looking to move out of the downtown core.

Toronto has now become Manhattan in that it is no longer possible to purchase a house in downtown Manhattan, Toronto has followed suit, building skyscrapers for a younger generation.”

Realtor Kate Carcone offered a number of tips: • Hire a real estate agent who has the inside track on listings before they hit the market; • secure your financing well ahead of house shopping; • be prepared to have your home inspector look at the house immediately to make your offer more enticing; • be prepared to make a bid the same day you view a property you want to purchase; and • be prepared to write a deposit cheque quickly. Deals have fallen through when potential buyers can’t produce a deposit cheque within 24 hours.

Experts worry that housing prices in York will continue to skyrocket as foreign investors looking to escape a 15 per cent tax in Vancouver turn their eyes to the GTA and as the provincial government pushes for more intensification to accommodate four million new residents moving to the Greater Golden Horseshoe by 2041.

The market is taking its toll on families, Carcone said.

“Multiple offers are the norm. The days of a typical house-buying experience are sadly behind us,” she said.

Sixteen drivers charged with impaired With the first-year anniversary approaching of the tragic drunk-driving collision that killed the three Neville-Lake children and their grandfather, York Regional Police continues to lay a lot of impaired driving charges.

Last weekend, 16 drivers were charged with alcohol-related offences, Const. Any Pattenden said.

Between Sept. 16 and 18, 12 men and four women were charged, including five as a result of collisions, seven from general police patrol or RIDE spot checks and four from calls made to police by residents.

Eleven drivers were charged with driving with more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in their blood and four were charged with having more than three times the legal limit.

One driver was charged Saturday night after a resident called police just before 11 p.m. to report a possible impaired driver travelling east on Stouffville Road, Pattenden said. The resident, who was able to obtain the license plate number, said a car was weaving in and out of lanes and had struck a median.

Police found the car parked in the driveway of the registered owner in Stouffville.

As officers approached the car, they discovered a 29-year-old suspect asleep in the car with his foot hanging out of the driver’s side door and his body slumped across the centre console with the car keys in his hand, Pattenden said.

A breath test indicated he had a blood alcohol level of 230 milligrams. The legal limit is 80 mgs.

Bridge closure can’t shut down studio tour stops Rain or shine, and despite the Blue Bridge in Jackson’s Point being closed for construction, all of the 22nd annual Georgina Studio Tour sites including those on Hedge Road remain on the docket for Sept. 24 and 25.

The bridge may be closed but Hedge Road, and about 10 tour sites potentially affected by the closure, will be open to participants, organizer Suzanne Cotton confirmed Tuesday.

Cotton was “more than a little concerned” when she first discovered scheduled repair of the bridge would coincide with the annual popular tour providing what is arguably one of the most diverse of its kind.

“It was a bit of shocker, I have to admit, since we’ve been doing this every year for the past 22 years and tour dates are published two years in advance,” Cotton said.

With the event fast approaching, she feared the bridge closure would deter some people from making the trip to the Hedge Road area, where 10 out of the 40 total artists participating in this year’s tour are located, including perennial favourites Barb Banfield, Lesley Sedore and renowned visiting Toronto metal artist Todd Waring.

“It will be a bit of detour, but everyone is accessible,” Cotton said, adding she’ll be out posting her own detour signs to make sure people know where they are going on the selfguided, two-day tour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Detour information is also available on the town’s website at georgina.ca.

The results of a $10,000 structural analysis of the bridge last year showed substantial repairs to both the concrete supporting structures and steel members were required, according to the town’s operations and infrastructure department.

The budget for the project, which the town estimates will increase the 1912 heritage bridge’s life span by at least 15 years, is $585,000, including consultant and geotechnical fees.

The Georgina Fire Department wants you to join the Don’t Wait, Check the Date! selfie challenge as part of this year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week Oct. 9 to 15.

In support of this year’s campaign, which reminds residents to check the date on their smoke alarms, the fire department is hosting an open house at the Sutton Fire Hall located at 37 Snooks Rd. Saturday, Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will include a free pancake breakfast, a free barbecue, firefighter demonstrations, interactive stations, different community partners, a bouncy castle, games and much more.

“Smoke alarms don’t last forever,” Georgina fire chief Ron Jenkins said.

“We are challenging everyone to take a selfie of their family checking the expiry date of their smoke alarms, post it on Twitter and tag @georginafire and use the hashtag #checkthed8 to show us your alarm is up-to-date.”

While smoke alarms typically last 10 years, you should check yours and the manufacturer’s instructions for replacement on the back of the smoke alarm.

Smoke alarms are required on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas.

They should be tested monthly by pushing the test button on the alarm, with batteries being replaced at least once every

year or when the alarm’s low battery signal begins to “chirp”.

Don’t dictate Canadian conscience

W

hat does it mean to think like a Canadian?

Conservative leadership candidate and Simcoe-Grey MP Kellie Leitch sent out a survey last week asking those who subscribe to her campaign newsletters if they support a policy to screen landed immigrants and refugees for “antiCanadian values.”

Initially, she and her staff refused to comment on what she meant by “anti-Canadian values.”

Later, she released a statement saying she’s going to be “putting forward policies that will make Canada, safer, stronger and will enhance a unified Canadian identity.”

The anti-Canadian values, she clarified, include “intolerance toward other religions, cultures and sexual orientations, violent and or misogynist behaviour and/or a lack of acceptance of our Canadian tradition of personal and economic freedoms.”

Does Leitch not trust the laws we have? Does she expect to predict who might commit a hate crime?

Thankfully, Canadian values aren’t arbitrary.

And Leitch is wrong.

According to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, everyone in Canada is free to speak their minds within the boundaries of the law.

“We are free to think our own thoughts, speak our minds, to gather peacefully into groups and to associate with whomever we wish, as long as we do not infringe valid laws, which protect the rights and interests of others,” reads a summary of the Charter posted at justice.gc.ca.

In other words, your conscience is your own.

The charter also states no one can be deprived of these rights, except through fair legal procedures and based on clear, fair laws. It’s akin to being innocent until proven guilty.

Screening exists for immigrants and refugees, but they must still be allowed to hold their own views and minds.

Evelyn Beatrice Hall said it best in her book The Friends of Voltaire: “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

What a slippery slope to even imply we’re going to allow or not allow a person to live here – a person who has otherwise done what is required to become a citizen or permanent resident or refugee here – because they have some thoughts someone has decided are anti-Canadian. Disguising the idea as a safety precaution – that’s the stuff of dystopian science-fiction literature.

But here’s the kicker, Leitch can voice this opinion and continue to run for office, it’s Canada.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Wynne government has destroyed our medical system Recently, my son was taken by ambulance to Southlake Regional Health Centre with severe pain in his abdomen.

He was vomiting and had diarrhea. I followed him to the emergency department and the nightmare started.

He was unable to sit or stand, because of the intense pain, but no beds or stretchers were available for him to lay down. My son was curled up on the floor, gasping in pain.

Hours later, they took him for tests. Three hours later, the doctor sent him home. No one was available to run the ultrasound, so we were told to come back 9 a.m. the next day.

The next morning, ultrasound results showed his appendix was ruptured and had to be removed. The surgeon told us she was targeting surgery at 3:30 p.m.

He was admitted, but 3:30 p.m. became 7 p.m. as he was bumped because of more urgent patients. After surgery, he spent four days in hospital, taking antibiotics, to get rid of the poison.

The emergency department at Southlake is disgusting. People beside you are vomiting violently, children, and adults are crammed into small areas, where they receive minimal attention.

I visited a hospital in China 40 year ago and saw better. What I witnessed in Southlake is beyond belief, for people born and raised here.

If you took a sick pet to a veterinary clinic and saw these conditions, you would take your pet elsewhere.

The person to blame for this is Kathleen Wynne.

She has destroyed our medical system. I’m sure people are dying because of her budget cuts to our hospitals.

She’s wasted so much money and is now sacrificing our resources and medical system to try to recover.

Canadians please stand up and refuse to accept what is being forced upon you. Our medical system is broken.

We can do better on waste Re: Does charging people to recycle get desired results? column by Bernie O’Neill, Sept. 1.

I’d like to comment on the letters and Bernie O’Neill’s column on illegal dumping and waste management in York.

The reasoning to charge a fee for certain waste is to act as a deterrent to ensure that the proper recyclables are diverted from landfill. The Community Environmental Centre (CRC) doesn’t charge for metal, styrofoam, electronics, etc.

Increasing Double-Up Days (in Vaughan) works against this; we want to create less landfill waste, not more.

What is needed is more effort by everyone to ensure that our waste is properly separated to its respective stream.

I’m surprised at how little is left out in green bin/ blue boxes, and so much in regular garbage.

In our household, we can put out regular garbage only once a month, because I can divert most of my waste through green bin/blue box/backyard composting.

I do agree the Region of York could make it a little easier, such as “one-stop” dumping, instead of having to go to separate facilities for recyclables, electronics, hazardous household waste, etc..

Hoedown Showdown champ, 15, has starry goals

Keswick’s Mac Shepherd has been crowned king of the Magna Hoedown Showdown.

The 15-year-old took to the stage for the competition’s final round in Aurora Friday alongside nine other hopefuls to win the grand prize package worth over $20,000 including $2,500 cash, a Yamaha acoustic and electric guitar with a case and amp as well as mentorship and recording studio sessions.

Shepherd knocked it out of the park in front of an audience of 3,000 with his performances of The Steeldrivers’ If it hadn’t been for love and Chris Stapleton’s Parachute. After being named the victor, Shepherd secured a performance on the Hoedown stage before headliner Paul Brandt Sept. 17.

“I still can’t believe it,” Shepherd said as he worked his shift at Connors Music Store in Keswick the morning after his big win. “They called us up on stage and I thought I was second but when they said now let’s announce the winner I was like wait what?”

When his name was announced, he admits he was a little overwhelmed because his fellow Showdown contestants had set the bar pretty high with their performances.

His mother, Mary, suggested he and his older sister Emily take the chance and audition for the competition and he is glad he listened.

Not only did he benefit immensely from the mentorship provided throughout the

Showdown process but he is hoping the coming mentorship and recording sessions will give him and his sister enough to get their foot in the door in the music industry.

“I love music and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else,” he said. “I like to shoot for the stars and one day I hope to perform at the Air Canada Centre.”

He isn’t dead set on being a country artist as he and Emily have written a host of songs that fall into the country, dance, blues and pop music categories. The duo selects whatever genre best suits the lyrics. He plays guitar, piano, bass, mandolin, drums and cello.

“This win just gives me more fuel to continue on the path I was going down,” he said.

“It really sparked something in me.”

While this wasn’t his first time on stage as he has performed at local street festivals, the Newmarket Theatre and more, this was certainly the largest and most energetic crowd he has had the privilege of entertaining.

Friday’s headliner, Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea, paid tribute to the Showdown finalists, saving special praise for the young Shepherd.

“First time at the Magna Hoedown,” said Doyle, who with his band The Beautiful Gypsies had the big crowd dancing and singing along. “This is quite a hoedown.”

“I was thinking it might be in this little barn,” he said, looking at the football-field sized tent at Magna headquarters on Wellington Street. “This is like the greatest barn ever.”

Historic appointment for Chippewas of Georgina Island woman

A Chippewas of Georgina Island woman will continue to advocate for truth and reconciliation after what Lakehead University’s president and vice-chancellor called an historic appointment earlier this month.

Dr. Cynthia Wesley-Esquimaux was appointed the Thunder Bay university’s first ever Chair of Truth and Reconciliation Sept. 16 after serving as the university’s ViceProvost, Aboriginal Initiatives since July 2013.

“This is an incredibly important time in history and this appointment is an important statement by Lakehead about its commitment to moving forward on the process of reconciliation in our region and country,” said Wesley-Esquimaux, who was inducted as an “honourary witness” by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada in 2015.

“I am humbled and honoured to have been selected for this role.”

“The appointment of our first chair on truth and reconciliation comes at the same time that Lakehead students from around the world are starting their undergraduate programs that incorporate our unique indigenous content requirement.”

In her new role as chair, WesleyEsquimaux will advocate for Truth and Reconciliation within the Lakehead University community, while serving as an ambassador for truth and reconciliation issues in northwestern Ontario and Simcoe County, as well as at the provincial and national levels.

She will be responsible for leading the development of a plan that articulates Lakehead University’s response to the Report on Truth and Reconciliation.

She will work to support, and lead as required, Lakehead University’s focus on Aboriginal/ Indigenous priorities, and advise the president and other executive team members on provincial and national issues in regards to Indigenous peoples.

The Chippewa of Georgina Island First Nation member and the granddaughter of former Georgina Island chief Lorenzo Big Canoe has been actively engaged in a variety of environmental and humanitarian initiatives across Canada for years.

After narrowly missing out on the chief position by 48 votes during the 2011 island elections,

Wesley-Esquimaux continued her teaching and academic writing directed towards understanding historic and intergenerational trauma within the Aboriginal community.

‘The appointment of our first Chair on Truth and Reconciliation comes at the same time that Lakehead students from around the world are starting their undergraduate programs that incorporate our unique Indigenous Content Requirement.’

She has held the Nexen Chair in Aboriginal Leadership at the Banff Centre in Alberta, was an assistant professor at the faculty of social work and in indigenous studies at the University of Toronto, and an adjunct professor at Carleton University. She continues to hold

a status only assistant professorship at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Social Work.

She is a former advisory member of the Mental Health Commission of Canada, a board member for Healthy Minds Canada and for the newly formed Teach for Canada Non-Profit.

Wesley-Esquimaux is also a member of the Governing Circle of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation at the University of Manitoba.

The Sept. 16 ceremony at the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law building was attended by a number of dignitaries, including Ontario Regional Chief Isadore Day, Carolyn Bennett, Canada’s Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, as well as representatives from municipal and provincial levels of government, Fort William First Nation, Nishnawbe Aski Nation and Metis Nation of Ontario.

Chief Day called for a one-day retreat with provincial and federal indigenous affairs ministers — chaired by Wesley-Esquimaux — to reconcile issues around poverty, health and education.

all is upon us and there are lots of things happening in our community. I am pleased to announce that the installation of the much needed sidewalk on Station Road in Pefferlaw will soon be completed. Watch for the date of the ribbon cutting ceremony!

A new road sealer has been applied by the town roads staff to Lake Drive in Virginia as a trial, which has proven to be effective in controlling dust and ensuring the road gravel remains intact.

Tender submissions will soon be reviewed for the construction of a roof over the Pefferlaw Ice Pad. I will ensure to update everyone as more information becomes available.

I would like to say thank you to town staff for the new set of steps that have been put in place at the lake entrance in Corner’s Park in Port Bolster allowing for safer lake access for everyone.

Speaking of safety…safety on our roads is of the upmost importance. I have met with the road staff from both the Town of Georgina and the Region of York to investigate the

Christine Paterson missed by many, but never forgotten

here is no better tribute to a life well lived than to be remembered with love and honoured in memory.

That is exactly the case with Christine Paterson — a woman, by all accounts, with a big heart, great sense of humour and a shoot-from-the-hip attitude.

That really will come as no surprise to anyone who knows the close-knit Leach clan in Georgina.

“She was always helpful and would do anything for anyone,” her brother, Peter Leach, says. “She was funny, like mom, but also someone who told you the way it was – no bull.”

Sadly, the Leachs lost their sister and mother earlier this year.

It is actually a poignant, albeit small, comfort since the two were inseparable — spending weekends hitting the garage sale circuit or shopping.

“That’s probably where she got those god-awful gifts,” Wendy Leach laughs softly, explaining her sister was quite the jokester, especially when it came to the family’s annual worst Christmas gift exchange.

“I was the first one to receive the ugliest vase you’ll ever see as my gift one year,” she says.

Not only did Wendy decorate said gift and

Christine Paterson send it through the family tree, it was also spruced up and sent as a special delivery from Marilyn’s Flowers one year.

While everyone presumed it was a gift from a special admirer of Chris’, it turned out to be one of the best of many practical jokes in the family.

“Christine had a great sense of humour and of family,” Wendy says, adding it was her kindness that she will remember most.

“She put everyone else before herself,” she says, her voice full of admiration and love as she explains how her sister ensured

her three adult sons were looked after in the event of her death.

“She knew how sick she was, but none of us ever knew it and I had no idea what she had put into place for them until I dealt with her estate,” she explains.

“The way that she looked after them and their futures is simply incredible and it brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it,” she says of her sister, who practically raised her three boys by herself, being a young widow.

It was a similar proud moment for the Leach family when Chris was recognized by an entire community for the impact she made in so many lives.

Known to many as the friendly, knowledgeable and witty woman with a comeback for anything in the office at Sutton District High School, Christine was honoured with two bursaries awarded at the school’s graduation ceremony June 28.

Her sons — Shawn, Andy and David — as well as Wendy presented them to Jeremy Burrows-Balka and Linnea Geraghty.

Principal Dawn Laliberte spoke highly of the woman who handled all situations with grace under pressure and who earned well-deserved respect for treating all students with compassion, while holding them accountable.

Valedictorian Robert Fortier dedicated

“Our family is honoured that she was so loved at the school and touched so many lives,” sister and partner in travelling and familial ‘crime’ Janet Creaturo says, thanking the school community, which also planted a tree in its courtyard in memory of Chris, as well as dedicated a front garden and made the “prop” room forever “Chris’ Room”.

“What a reminder to us all that making a difference in someone’s life can take the smallest of gestures; a kind word, a smile, a friendly hello. I am proud beyond words for our Christine.”

Chris’ legacy is woven into the fabric of the school forever, the yearbook proudly states in among other tributes.

“Chris was a special friend to our island community and we will miss her dearly,” Chippewas of Georgina Island Councillor Lauri Hoeg Williamson wrote on behalf of chief and council. “Over many, many years, Chris supported and went above and beyond for our Georgina Island students.

She showed a deep caring and understanding in a way that was only hers, because she understood what challenges our youth face in attending school each day..... We loved her dearly.”

Christine died at the age of 65 at Southlake Regional Health Centre March 17 with her children by her side.

It wasn’t exactly a young driver’s dream start.

Paul Geniole Jr. finished at the rear of the 18-car field in Sunday’s rain-delayed NASCAR Pinty’s Series Kawartha 250 at Kawartha Speedway.

Driving for Canada’s Best Racing Team, the 23-year-old Keswick resident was beset with engine issues all weekend in the final race of the season which was postponed from Saturday afternoon due to rain.

He had to abandon the race well before the midway point of the 300lap race.

“We struggled with the issue all weekend long and unfortunately could never fix the issue,” Geniole said in an email on Tuesday. “We believe something internally is broken in the motor. About 48 laps into the race the car couldn’t keep up and we lost way too much power, causing us to pull off the track.”

Despite the outcome in his series debut, Geniole is hoping to be back in the future.

“Although disappointed with all our hard work, it was a great experience and we are going to work hard to find some funding to do it again,” he said.

funeral home limited “The goal was always to be a race car driver but I’ve always been interested in the mechanical side, too. My dad (Paul Sr.) and I built a car and did the work on it ourselves.”

“I just had a passion for working on cars and engineering and understanding the science behind cars,” said Geniole, who specializes in setup and suspension. “I think it’s useful to know and be able to transfer that knowledge into racing. It’s a different route but I’m still getting there.”

The assignment Saturday marked a return to the driver’s seat for his first race since August 2015 when he competed in the Lucas Oil Sportsman Series.

“It’s always been a dream to drive in the Pinty’s Series,” said Geniole, who attended Our Lady of the Lake Catholic College School in Keswick.

“I think this can open doors and get the attention of people to see what I can do with the car I’ve been given.”

He is confident he can make a career out of racing full-time starting with the former CASCAR series sponsored by Canadian Tire, if a number of factors fall into place.

“It definitely can be done,” said Geniole. “The only thing holding me back is the money side. If I can get backing I don’t see a problem running the entire series.”

The event, hosted by the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA) and Maskinonge River Recovery Project (MRRP) volunteer committee, celebrated completed restoration projects and the improved health of the river.

“A few years ago there was so much duckweed in the river that you could hardly paddle through it,” she said. “It’s obvious to us that restoration work is making a big difference in the health of the river.”

Multiple sightings of the great blue heron and a quick peek at the elusive black-crowned night heron punctuated that fact, Ballagh said.

She added residents interested in restoring and protecting the Maskinonge River may qualify for

funding grants through the LSRCA. Funding is available until March 31, 2017 for projects such as planting native buffers, trees and shrubs and enhancing wildlife habitat.

MRRP is a community-led initiative aimed at improving the water quality and wildlife habitat.

Funded by Environment Canada, restoration efforts hope to lessen damage caused by excess nutrients, low water flow, and lack of natural cover and vegetation.

Various activities to date include shoreline restoration, wildlife

habitat improvement and public awareness initiatives since the MRRP’s inception in 2008. More than 3,000 trees and shrubs have been planted along the riverbanks on 28 different sites and 462 metres along 13 properties with eroding shoreline have been replaced with rock/shrub banks.

The Maskinonge lies within a subwatershed entirely in York Region, with most of its 90 kilometres in length, including tributaries, falling within Georgina and East Gwillimbury.

The Gospel taught by Jesus and the apostles was also believed by Abraham, the father of the nation of Israel, and was given to him by promises from God who “preached the gospel to Abraham” (Galatians 3:8). If we can understand what was taught to Abraham, we will then have a very basic picture of the Christian Gospel.

The “Good News” or Gospel is not something which began at the time of Jesus.

The apostle Paul explained to the new Christian believers: “We declare to you glad tidings (the Gospel) – that promise which was made to our fathers”.

The promises to Abraham have two basic themes which Jesus amplified in his preaching: 1. Things about Abraham’s seed (special descendant – primarily referring to Jesus), through whom all nations would be blessed.

2. Things about the land which was promised to Abraham and his seed.

By baptism into the name of Jesus, we become part of the promised seed and will share in the land blessings of Abraham. This was the gospel Jesus taught and proclaimed, an amplification of the Old Testament promises.

(four part-time positions available in 2017) The Ontario Government is seeking local citizens interested in serving on the Central LHIN (Local Health Integration Network) Board of Directors.

The Central LHIN plans, funds, integrates and monitors the local health care system for sections of northern Toronto, a portion of Etobicoke, most of York Region and South Simcoe County, and works with over 100 health service providers. With 1.8 million residents, this is one of the most culturally diverse and fastest growing regions in Ontario.

The role of the Board of Directors is to oversee, advise, and govern the strategic direction and priorities of the LHIN, including the use of $2 billion in public funding in accordance with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care policies and directions, accountability agreements, other applicable provincial legislation, and strategic business plans.
