Georgina’s council meetings will now begin with formal acknowledgement of Indigenous peoples. Tabled earlier this month, the motion put forward by Mayor Margaret Quirk was deferred until the wording was formally run by the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation band and council. Officially approved in a letter from Chief Donna BigCanoe, who expressed appreciation for the contact and acknowledgement, the wording was unanimously approved by council in a recorded vote Oct. 18. "Reconciliation begins with understanding and acknowledging and learning from the past. It means we have to rebuild togeth-

er what was broken," Quirk quoted of her rationale and timing behind the move. "That encompasses why I feel we need to do this. I believe it’s the first step. Words are one thing, but actions are another." Moving forward, Quirk will continue discussions with the Chippewas of Georgina Island regarding the possibility of teachings from band members to "assist us with learning their culture, the issues that they have and just a general overview of their situation" to "put into actions the words we are saying at the beginning of each council meeting". The formal acknowledgement follows those recently initiated at regional council meetings and in area schools as acts of reconciliation. "Nobody is interested in

something you didn’t do," Deputy Mayor Naomi Davison said in support of the change and in "appreciation of what is being done here". The following words will be read at the start of every town council meeting after the traditional moment of meditation: "We would like to begin today’s meeting by acknowledging that the Town of Georgina is located over lands originally used and occupied by the First Peoples of the Williams Treaties First Nations and other Indigenous Peoples and thank them for sharing this land. We would also like to acknowledge the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation as our close neighbour and friend, one that we strive to build a co-operative and respectful relationship with".

HEIDI RIEDNER hriedner@yrmg.com A record number of nominations and some of Georgina’s first families of farming were among the key highlights of last week’s Georgina Chamber of Commerce business excellence awards and the Mayor and Council’s Milestone Awards held at The Link Oct. 19. A whopping 212 nominations for 72 businesses were received for eight awards in seven different categories for the chamber’s business excellence awards. "That’s double than what we received last year," chamber manager and event MC Jennifer Anderson said of the awards, which were open to all Georgina businesses. "The unprecedented amount of nominations in the awards’ 11-year history is a testament to the superior services of all the nominees," chamber board chair Jim Beechey said. For the second year in a row, the business awards were held in partnership with the Mayor and Council’s Milestone Awards honouring the longtime commitment and investment of area businesses as well as the generations of families that have contributed to the community for decades. This year’s awards went to seven family farms, each marking or surpassing an incredible 70-year milestone in operation. That includes the Johnson family’s Belridge Dairy farm, Don and Brenda Rae’s ancestral operation in Pefferlaw dating back 200 years, Barb and Richard Munro’s Black River Farm on Catering Road that once sold over 200 head of cattle

Being honoured in their home community for five of the farming enterprises came on the heels of a ceremony held earlier this month at the Region of York marking the 17 family farm operations in agricultural business for over 150 years across the region, with Georgina farmers dominating the stage. CRIME

JOHN CUDMORE jcudmore@yrmg.com York Regional Police charged a Newmarket man with the murder of Georgina’s Cody Gionet. Gionet was found on Oct. 21 at 10 p.m. with gunshot wounds on Sheldon Avenue, in a neighbourhood northeast of Yonge Street and Davis Drive in Newmarket. Gionet died of his injuries in hospital. Another man was arrested on "unrelated charges", police said. Both men were arrested at a house near the scene, according to police. Robert Curtis, who identified himself as a friend of Gionet, told CTV News Toronto the victim was a nice guy. "Sometimes he had to go make some money the way he could, but to be honest, he was a really good guy," he said. Another man named Tyler Biladeau said he

Gionet a "really nice guy" that "didn’t do anything wrong". Travis Whitman, 21, is charged with second-degree murder. Whitman appeared in bail court in Newmarket Oct. 23. Residents of the Newmarket neighbourhood were coming to grips with the fatal shooting on their street only hours earlier. "It’s so sad. I thought this was a great neighbourhood and all of a sudden we’re hearing shots," said Cecilia Ribadeneira, nodding toward the scene, as she left for church. A resident of her home only since August, Ribadeneira ventured upon the scene while returning from a night out at the movies. "I saw a body on the sidewalk," she recalled. "My son thought it was a prank because no one was doing anything. I thought about doing CPR

but then the police arrived. It’s very sad. "I thought this was a calm neighbourhood; I hope they get to the bottom of this." At the other end of the street, a woman showed a blurred cell phone image of man being escorted, apparently in handcuffs, into a police car. One woman, who asked to not be identified, said the incident would not change her mind about living in the neighbourhood. "It happens everywhere so I’m not too concerned," said the woman, a resident in the area for about one year, while walking her dog and heading past the yellow police tape blocking off the section of Sheldon Avenue. "It could happen here or Vaughan. It’s one of those things and random. I’m not planning to move from here." It was the second incident of gunplay on the

street this year. Another incident in January involved shots being fired at a house on Sheldon Avenue. Despite police saying Gionet was from Georgina, he appears to have spent much of his time in Newmarket. He not only went to Huron Heights High School, but also St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Elementary School. A number of friends paid tribute to him on Facebook, including one who’d mentioned he had plans to move to Newfoundland. Really sorry you won’t get to see life from the eyes as a Newfie," wrote the account named Dave Crocker, who referred to the Newfoundland tradition to kiss cod fish. "I

guess it’s time to kiss the big fish in the sky..." "I remember taking the bus with Cody to school and playing road hockey with on my street growing up," wrote the account named Peter Ponzzio. "RIP brotha!". "RIP Cody Gionet taken way too soon bro," wrote the account named Terry Samuelsson. "Rest easy fam." A home on Sheldon Avenue was shot at in January according to York Regional Police. During that incident one man was injured after jumping out the window. Anyone with information is asked to call York Regional Police at 1-866876-5423. - with files from John Cudmore

EDITORIAL | OPINION

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

Good riddance to employee discount tax idea Hopefully, by now, employees in Canada’s retail sector - or what remains of it, at least - can breathe a little easier knowing the Canada Revenue Agency isn’t poised to take aim at the discounts they receive from their employers. Such incentives, which range from the meagre - a small percentage off the retail price of a given item, for example - to the generous - such as being able to buy merchandise at the employer’s cost - are commonplace in the customer service industry and serve as something of an enticement for would-be employees in a sector where a great many of the front-line staff members are paid minimum wage. Given that, it seemed the CRA was effectively talking about flipping retail workers upside down and shaking them by the ankles until their loose change fell out. The controversy began earlier this month when a 2016 update to CRA documents, stating that employees who receive a discount on the price of merchandise owing to their employment should have the value of said discount included in their income, was thrust in the spotlight via a Globe and Mail story. The policy went on to say the value of the benefit should be calculated as the difference between the retail price of the item less the amount the employee paid. No amount would be included in the event the same discount was offered to members of the public in some manner. Business groups, some of whom had decried the notion when it first came up but whose objections largely went unnoticed, argued it would be a nightmare to track their employees’ discounts, while other stakeholders voiced concern that employment incentives could be scrapped altogether by companies simply to avoid the aggravation. Despite a Liberal MP initially suggesting that any employee discount not offered to the public at some point would be fair game under the new rules, the federal government quickly distanced itself from the policy, expressing "disappointment" in CRA bureaucrats, and prompted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to tweet assurances to retail workers that their discounts weren’t in the crosshairs. The government, in consultation with industry stakeholders, will now go back and review the policy and craft a new response to the 2011 court ruling that triggered the update in the first place. In any case, after the PR mess, it’s safe to say the idea of taxing retail employee discounts won’t soon be resurrected, and that’s a good thing. It was a wrong-headed idea that unfairly targeted workers in a sector primarily comprised of people at the lower end of the income spectrum.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Time for changes at Vaughan City Hall Re: LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Why were Culture Days scheduled on holy days?, Oct. 7. Although I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Weinberg, I must ask another question regarding the agenda of the City of Vaughan council: Where was Alan Shefman, Ward 5 Councillor? Mr. Shefman, who is of the Jewish faith, was not heard from. Sandra YeungRacco, Ward 4 Councillor, was another not heard from. Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua claims to be a friend of all cultures within Vaughan. He truly dropped the ball this time! Mr. Weinberg: You are absolutely correct.

The City of Vaughan council has gone stagnant and the residents deserve a changing of the guard. One past councillor is finally gone; maybe it is time for the rest to move on. I would suggest that all of the residents, of all cultural and religious affiliations, examine the Vaughan political arena. It’s wake-up time. Howard Kramer

months as before? Most Ontaxians are well-organized with their monies; they pay water each three months, their taxes two to four times a year, and want to pay their heating gas bills every two months. We do so much banking that this is adding to the time consumption of customers - regardless of what form of banking we do, it is adding to the costs of operating a utility/business that will cost people more in the long run and, of course, gain a touch more PST/HST for the government. There is a great disrespect for Ontaxians by their government and this needs to be changed by election or other more forceful means. What they are and who will do it remains to be seen.

This recent monthly payment scam needs to be implemented to help only the few people who have not looked after their lives and futures and perhaps a few unfortunate others, all of whom did not anticipate the evil of the political party they voted into office last time. We need to give their heads a shake ... if there is anything to shake. Additionally, I hope no one is stupid enough to arrange direct withdrawals from their bank accounts with the worst offenders the utilities and public services (municipal service ’corporations’ or either federal or provincial government). This could be financial disaster when mistakes are made because of whom you are dealing with. Nick Bird

’Stop acting bad, get some hobbies, go on Tinder’ l Continued from page 1

shouldn’t be dealing with this yourself. I’m here to talk to you.’ Just stuff like that. He said, ’Here’s my number, you can talk to me any time. We should meet up and get some bubble tea and help you feel better,’" she said. "I thought he was super nice. Like, wow, someone actually cares." The following day, after she was discharged, he offered her a ride. It was in the vehicle that the sexual assault occurred, she said. "My biggest fear was that he was going to lock the door and things were going to escalate. So I just, basically, I don’t want to say let it happen, but I just sat there. I kind of froze," she said. Police have charged Pabiram Ravichandran, 24, of Aurora, with two counts of sexual assault, one involving the woman and a second

involving a 16-year-old girl. He will make his next court appearance Oct. 27. The alleged assault was one of many incidents in a lifelong struggle with mental health challenges for the woman, who is looking at a career in social work after she finishes getting her high school diploma. The former Richmond Hill resident entered the mental health system at age seven when she showed signs of hyperactivity, repetitive movement disorder and obsessive characteristics. Initially misdiagnosed, she was later determined to have autism spectrum disorder and complex posttraumatic stress disorder, as a result of being repeatedly sexually and physically assaulted at the age of five by a nine-year-old neighbourhood boy, while two older girls watched and mocked her. Intermittently, over a period of years, she has had

contact with many mental health professionals and agencies. "The issue with these programs, they have a cookie-cutter approach. You can only stay in the program for a certain amount of time and once that time is over, they just discharge you. But everybody is not ready to be discharged at that time," she said, adding there are also often long waiting lists for programs. "I have been on waiting lists for so long that I have aged out of those waiting lists." She began going to Southlake as she experienced suicidal thoughts and attempted suicide several times. "I have severe impulse issues. I think and then I do and then I regret right after. It’s never really a plannedout thing, like, ’I’m going to kill myself today.’ It’s always ’I’m upset, I’m frustrated, I don’t know what to do with my emotions right

Radon is a naturally occurring gas you can’t see, taste or smell. It is the

now,’" she said. "When I was 17, I hung myself in the closet and woke up (after being) unconscious on the ground because the bar snapped .... I’ve also overdosed on (psychiatric drug) lithium a couple of times." The woman said her treatment at Southlake has often been "not helpful," including enduring hearing dismissive comments from some staff such as, "She only comes here for the meds." A few weeks ago, as an in-patient, she said a nurse told her to "stop acting bad, get some hobbies and go on (dating and hook-up app) Tinder." "The get hobbies part I don’t mind, but stop acting bad? I’m not purposely trying to be bad and I don’t see me as a bad person. And go on Tinder? That’s a little random," she said. The woman said she has been restrained twice while at Southlake, including one incident when she was

"tackled" by security guards and injected with a sedative when she wouldn’t move away from a door on the mental health floor and staff feared she would flee. She said she has had some good experiences at Southlake, pointing to a caring doctor who treated her in the youth unit when she was younger. However, she wants to see Southlake provide more training to employees dealing with patients with mental health concerns and review its procedures for restraining and injecting patients with sedatives. Southlake provided a written statement in response to the woman’s concerns. "When people come to the hospital, we want them to feel heard and we want them to share their concerns with us, so that we can resolve any issues with them as soon as possible. "We would really encourage this young woman

to come forward and contact York Regional Police to report this, so that she has a voice to tell her story" it said.

WHEN WILL JESUS RETURN TO THE EARTH? About two thousand years ago Jesus Christ promised “I will come again”. The second last verse of the last book of the Bible records the assurance of Jesus: “Surely, I come quickly. Amen”. But Jesus has not yet returned, so is the Promise still valid? When Jesus ascended to heaven from the Mount of Olives, the angels testified: “ This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11). Jesus taught his followers to pray: “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” - part of the famous “Lord’s Prayer”. Without a doubt, the gospel Jesus preached concerned the theme of the Kingdom of God and his disciples thought he was going to establish it right then, restoring the ancient Kingdom of Israel which was God’s Kingdom on earth in Old Testament times. However, Jesus informed them that other events must happen first. Some of the events Jesus said must happen first, before he returns (and they can be observed today) are: the restoration of the nation of Israel (after centuries of dispersion of the Israelis into all nations of the earth); earthquakes, pestilences, famines, increasing conflicts, terrorism, violence, atrocities and wars, and such perplexity in the nations which offer no solutions. In other words, because the world is in such a chaotic situation caused by disobedience and non-recognition to God’s ways, only the promised divine intervention will bring about God’s promise to transform our world when the “earth will be full of the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea” Habakkuk 2:14.
