Premier Kathleen Wynne visited the Georgina Nurse Practitioner Led Clinic Wednesday to announce a major funding plan alongside Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Chris Ballard and Georgina Nurse Practitioner Led Clinic executive director Beth Cowper-Fung.

Nurse-practitioner clinic gets $1.63M boost HEIDI RIEDNER hriedner@yrmg.com Dressed appropriately in a liberal swath of red, Premier Kathleen Wynne paid a visit to Georgina’s nurse practitioner-led clinic to deliver a $1.63 million grant that will help meet the demand for local health care.

"Everyone here supports and believes in the notion that we should be able to provide highquality, patient-centred care for people as close to their homes as possible," Wynne said during the announcement of the provincial funding at the Dalton Road clinic Oct. 11. "That’s what this clinic is

about (and) our investment will help more people get the care they need faster and closer to home." The long-awaited and muchanticipated funding is the result of a comprehensive application put together by the clinic’s director, Beth Cowper-Fung, finally making its way through the bu-

reaucratic process. It will go toward the clinic’s new location on the vacant Lake Drive lot, just east of the town parkette, in Jackson’s Point. "Thanks to the generosity of the Georgina Community Health Care Council, we’ve been able to

Fake doctor scripts used to get fentanyl from pharmacists JEREMY GRIMALDI jgrimaldi@yrmg.com At one point they were allegedly riding high on Georgina’s fentanyl epidemic, accessing the drug for less than 10 per cent of the street value by using fake prescriptions in 2013. Now, four years later, on Oct. 10, they were sitting on opposites sides of the court, one in the witness box, the other representing himself, facing charges of using forged prescriptions and possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking. According to Crown lawyer Avik Ghosh, the plan was simple enough Adam Vickerson, 44, from Newmarket, would use the allegedly stolen prescription pad he gained hold of to forge fentanyl scripts. He and his partner, Gavin Lambie, 38, from Georgina, would then recruit fentanyl users to purchase the opioid drug from unsuspecting pharmacists. If they scored the drugs, they would split them between Lambie and Vickerson. The buyer, often a fentanyl user, would allegedly either get money or drugs in return for their services. The pair, who were said to have started in June 2013, were alleged

Now, Lambie is testifying against Vickerson saying he wants to turn his life around after his best friend overdosed on the drug. Taking the stand on Oct. 10, Lambie said he’d already pleaded guilty to four counts and will soon serve six years in prison for his crimes.

"I’m trying to change my life and do things properly," he told the court. "In early spring 2013 I was using opiates before (fentanyl) became more frequently available so I started using that. It was more potent so addiction progressed more quickly. Within a couple of months I was dependent on it daily." He said he would eventually become embroiled in the ring with Vickerson who he said were able to access fifteen fen-

In one text the issue of impaired driving appears to come up, when it’s mentioned that a man had "almost killed Sally and I" five times while "racing" on the highway. Also involved in the trial is Tracy Fairbarn, from Georgina, who is alleged to have illegally held medical files, among other charges. She has pleaded not

guilty. It is alleged that another woman, Stephanie Goodfellow, was recruited to buy fentanyl but grew scared while at one pharmacy counter before running out of the building. The York police investigation, dubbed Tango and Cash, resulted in 23 people, including a pharmacist, mostly from Georgina, charged with well above 140 alleged offences. The trial continues.

stay here while we’ve been waiting for this great news, however the current building no longer meets code for a medical facility," Cowper-Fung said. More functional space to offer confidential programs to the clinic’s current 3,000 patients, as well as the opportunity to provide services to more people who do not have a primary health care provider are two key benefits of the new location, CowperFung added. It is the next step not only in the evolution of the nurse-practitioner model of health care, but also what Wynne called a "transformation of health care in Ontario" built on an interdisciplinary approach

"that we know works so well." "To be fair, we’re just figuring that out again as a society," Wynne said, adding offering an amalgam of services in one location is a "good idea" and counteracts the "silo" effect of care created during the past few decades. Wynne added Georgina’s clinic is "ahead of the curve" in that respect. Indeed, 15 applications were received from across the province this year, according to the executive director of the Nurse Practitioners’ Association of Ontario, Theresa Agnew. Nurse practitioners (NPs) started out as registered nurses (RNs) who went back to university to "learn how to do more for their patients", Cowper-

Fung said. Thanks to recent regulatory changes, the scope of nurse practitioners has expanded to include writing prescription medications and ordering diagnostic imaging. Georgina’s one and only NP-led clinic -- one of 25 clinics serving 60,000 people in the province -- has come a long way since NP Anne Hughes worked alongside Dr. Burrows almost a decade ago. Its current team offers primary care, as well as access to specialty services from social workers, a dietician, registered practical nurse, physiotherapist and lab technicians. Combined, they provide a gamut of services from mental health care, to service co-ordination and re-

ABOUT US

United Ways will be stronger together If ever there was proof that there is strength in numbers, it’s the results of the United Way fundraising campaigns in Toronto and York Region after the organizations amalgamated in 2015. Before they merged, the two charities separately raised a total of $97 million. Together, in 2015 they raised $100.2 million. And in 2016, that rose to $102 million. Now the United Way Toronto and York Region hopes to raise $103 million in its annual fundraising campaign, launched last week to fight poverty, build strong communities and help kids. The decision to combine organizations was clearly a good idea in 2015. And it raised the question of why more United Ways across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) don’t join forces to create one powerhouse charity working to create a better life for everyone in the region. Last week, that idea came a step closer to reality with the announcement that the boards of trustees of United Way Peel (representing Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon) and United Way Toronto and York Region have unanimously agreed to amalgamate. If members of Peel agree to it at a meeting on Oct. 26, the organizations will unite on April 1, 2018. That would be a welcome move, indeed. As Daniele Zanotti, CEO of the United Way Toronto and York Region, noted, the merger will allow those involved in United Way to do more to strengthen communities across the GTA: "Whether it’s giving young people the right start in life or solving local poverty, these issues aren’t contained to one spot on the map." Peel’s interim CEO and president, Anita Stellinga, believes the proposed merger, will strengthen their fundraising while also allowing them to continue to meet the needs of the communities they serve. She said there’s increasing competition for fundraising dollars and joining the world’s largest United Way in the Toronto York organization will give them greater reach. If approved, she feels it will increase her organization’s scope and give it a more impactful voice in the region while also better serving residents and their donors. The ability to raise more funds with a bigger regional agency is happy news for the hundreds of charities that depend on each of these United Ways for support. Indeed, last year, the United Way Toronto and York Region provided ongoing support for 220 local agencies, while Peel supports 53 agencies with a fundraising goal this year of $11.4 million. Whether those agencies house the homeless, feed the hungry or shelter the abused, they all deserve our support. The fall campaigns are now underway at all United Way agencies across the region. Please give generously. The community you build with your donations is ultimately your own.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Don’t confuse the ’R’s Re: York Region residents recycle 91 per cent of their garbage, Oct. 1. York Region residents should be proud of their accomplishments with respect to waste management. We were early adopters of the blue box and green bin, and current initiatives like textile recycling demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the "3 Rs." But those three Rs exist in a hierarchy, with "reduce" at the top, followed by "reuse" and completed by "recycle." (There is now a fourth R, "recover," as in recovering energy from waste.) The distinction matters: yes, our waste diversion rate is high, but our total amount of waste produced - regardless of where it ends up - is also

high. While obviously preferable to landfills, recycling still comes with significant environmental and economic costs. True waste reduction is cheaper and cleaner, and does not require bureaucracies, trucks or processing plants. It requires a simple choice by residents to consume smarter, and consume less. The Region’s SM4RT Living Plan identifies food waste as the best place to start on the path to "zero waste." Let’s keep moving in this direction, but remember not to mistake the third R for the first. Myles O’Brien

Oct. 5. The first thing to address this issue is to fire all involved regional officials as being either incompetent or dishonest. We’ve seen this movie many times before: first government spends like a drunk sailor and then says: "We ran out of money and need to tax you more". Look at the grandeur of Highway 7 featuring empty lanes and buses, massive shelters and elaborate masonry. This is an epitome of building a house for a Christmas dinner, if we use Mr. Titherington’s smart metaphor. Nice but not affordable. Igor Bily

Community Living project worthwhile Re: Filling the ’abyss’,

Oct. 5. I read with interest the article in the Oct. 5 paper. Thought it a very worthwhile project, yet nowhere in the article does it say where one could contribute some money. Kind of misses part of the point. Perhaps this could be rectified. The paper is awfully small these days. I understand the smaller size, but then shouldn’t it be thicker? The letter commentaries used to be about five and now only two. We gone from three papers to one paper to half a paper. What’s next? I still really enjoy reading the paper, despite all the technology. There’s always so much to keep up with in this town. The newspaper is an important communication tool. Keep up the good work! Georgina Paranormal Society talks to Newmarket ghosts LAURA FINNEY lfinney@yrmg.com Are there ghosts in Newmarket’s Old Town Hall? Many people think so, including Lynda Quirino, executive director of the Georgina Paranormal Society. "Our experience is that there appears to be some kind of ambience energy in that building," she said. "Last year we did manage

to interact with it." The society hosts investigations during the Ghosts of Old Town Hall, a sold-out tour that takes place every Wednesday in October. "We actually share suspicious events and anecdotes that have happened throughout downtown," said Colin Service, director of recreation and Culture with the Town of Newmarket. The tour explores Main

Street and ends in the basement of Old Town Hall. "At one time, there were jail cells down there," said Service. "It used to be a police station, and that is where people were held." And that is where the Paranormal Society conducts their investigation. "Last year they were able to communicate with a spirit that was apparently male, he didn’t understand that the year was 2016," said Service. "He in-

dicated he was very happy living at Old Town Hall. That he was a prisoner there who had been wrongly convicted of a crime." Quirino said that spirit might not be the only one. Service said a lot of people have had reported encounters at the building. The society uses a number of tools during their investigation including electromagnetic field detectors, thermal cameras, voice recorders and spirit

boxes which use white noise to communicate with spirits. "We’ve had lot of voices that have come through and actually spoken," said Quirino. "Often they will respond to your questions." Quirino has been involved with paranormal investigations for years, and started the society in 2012. "The Georgina Paranormal Society actually helps

people who believe that they have experienced something that they can’t explain or something paranormal," she said adding many times people may feel crazy. "We are kind of a safe place they can go to." The group is made of volunteers, and they do not charge for their services. Their meetings are open to the public. Administering an Estate If an individual dies with or without a Will, certain steps are required by the courts prior to the administration of their Estate. If the deceased during his/ her lifetime prepared and executed a Will, the Estate Trustee listed in the deceased’s Will may be appointed to administer the Estate. If the deceased did not have a Will then the Estate Trustee may be their next of kin. Documents are sent for approval by the court to legally prove that the Trustee is eligible to administer the deceased’s Estate. Hiring an Estate Lawyer can make these steps less stressful. An Estate Lawyer can notarize copies of the Will, Death Certificate or Marriage Certificate in order to facilitate the Trustee’s access to the deceased’s personal assets to ensure the Estate is probated in a timely fashion. Administering an Estate can be overwhelming for individuals who are trying to cope with the loss of a family member. If you require the assistance of an Estate Lawyer for the administration of an Estate, contact Donnell Law Group to book your consultation.

Over the next few years, more than 100,000 General Labourer jobs (e.g. construction, landscaping, factory, trades helper) will be available across Canada. Here in York Region, there is an extreme shortage of General Labourers, and companies are paying higher wages and offering better benefits for these workers. Entry level jobs in this industry pay between $13 – $20 per hour. From an entry level General Labour job, many workers grow to become Supervisors, Foremen, certified trades people and business owners. Employers are looking for workers! For job seekers between the age of 15-29, Job Skills can help prepare you for General Labour jobs, including providing certificate training, equipment, clothing and transportation allowance. Services are funded by Employment Ontario.

Should I fight this ticket myself? Granted you have the right to defend yourself in traffic court, however, I don’t advise it. There is little or no tolerance, by insurance companies, for infractions on your record and the courts are exercising their power where penalties are concerned. There are very few tickets that I would recommend you take care of yourself. Hire a professional in the field to take care and fix your problems. Why Does My Back Hurt After I RAKE? Excessive twisting, reaching, bending, lifting and carrying bags can place too much load on the spine resulting in back strain. Here are some tips to avoid this! WARM-UP/COOL DOWN: Stretch and go for a brief walk before/after raking PACE YOURSELF: Do 20-30 minutes at a time, alternate between raking and bagging TECHNIQUE: Hold the rake handle close to the body, with hands well separated to allow good leverage. Stand with one foot in front of the other, shifting forward and backward rather than planting your feet. Avoid twisting at the waist and switch sides frequently. Don’t overreach to get the last few leaves. When bagging leaves, lift smaller loads, tensing the stomach, keeping the back straight and using the legs to do the lifting. Carry the bag close to the body. When are Ticks Most Active?

Why Should I Have Dental X-Rays Taken?

Ticks become more active in the cooler weather of fall and spring. They tend to reside in tall grass and attach to your pet as they push by. We now have products you can give your pets orally that will kill the tick before it transmits diseases such as Lyme, Erlichia and Anaplasmosis. All these diseases are very debilitating to your pet. Call us today – your Veterinary Experts at 905-722-3534 and 905-476-3802 to keep your furry friend healthy and happy as the weather gets colder.

Your dentist takes a full set of dental X-rays early into the doctor-patient relationship. This helps to examine and record your mouth’s hidden areas for issues that need comparing against changes that occur between appointments. Most adult patients have bitewing X-rays every year and a full mouth series every four to five years. But those with a higher risk for dental caries problems may need them every six to 18 months.

’Car hopping’: police link 50 Georgina car break-ins to 4 area men JEREMY GRIMALDI jgrimaldi@yrmg.com

CORRECTION NOTICE In the ad beginning October 13, 2017, we are advertising $10 Lion Brand® Shawl in a Ball® & Scarfie™ Yarn and Charisma™ Big Yarn. The reg. price was printed incorrectly as $11.99. Scarfie™ Yarn’s reg. price is $12.99, so the correct reg. price for these yarns is $11.99 - $12.99. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Car break-ins have become such a common occurrence in York Region, they have a new name - "car hopping". It’s bothersome for resi-

dents, makes them feel less safe and is one of the crimes most likely to affect your average citizen. For police, it’s particularly annoying, because it’s completely avoidable. "It’s a crime of opportuni-

ty... a relatively easy way to make money," said Det.-Sgt. Kevin Stoby, who said the crime would largely be wiped out if people would just lock their car doors. "It would eliminate 90 per cent of this crime, if not more."

MAKE EVERY DAY “THANKSGIVING” DAY It is very easy to lose focus on the truly important things of this life with our hectic lives of work, family and the constant bombardment from the media around us which thrusts the thorough nastiness of the world and its ways before us. There is just so much we can be thankful for around us. Take a few moments each day and find something of God’s handiwork in our view. How thankful we can be for the glory of the Fall season colours all around us right now, for living in such pristine beauty, for scenic sunrises and spectacular sunsets. Take pleasure in our friends and family, both far and near; be thankful for our homes and safe country with bountiful harvests. But more importantly, let us reflect and consider the words of Psalm 96: “Sing to the LORD, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvellous deeds among all peoples. For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. For the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. Worship the LORD in the splendour of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth. Say among the nations, ‘The LORD reigns. The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved.” It is God, whose steady hand continues to guide our world. “Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms”.
