The details of the event were posted on Gionet’s Facebook page underneath a picture of his beloved dog. The posting states that all "whom loved, cared" or called Gionet, aka "Redz", a friend will be gathering at Newmarket Church of Christ, at 230 Davis Drive, on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m.. "We will be gathering to share our favorite memories, precious words and favorite foods to celebrate all the walks of life that Cody held close to his heart," the post reads. Friends, family and those who cared for Gionet will be gathering at a celebration of life on Nov. 3. down on Sheldon Avenue on Saturday, Oct. 21, after some residents said they heard seven gunshots ring out. After York police attended the scene they raided a home near the shooting site and ar-

rested two men, charging one with unrelated charges and the other, named Travis Whitman, with second-degree murder. Since the incident people have contacted yorkregion.com to find out who will be taking care of Gionet’s dog, which is featured prominently on his social media account. Police have said someone close to him is looking after any pets. Since his death, there has been an outpouring of emotion on Facebook, which lists his former employer as Camslide a well-known Newmarket car parts manufacturer, his former high school as Huron Heights and his grade school as St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Elementary. He is survived by his parents, David and Michelle, and his younger sister, Rachel. In lieu of flowers donations should be sent to the OSPCA, the same post added.

ket. "I spent a few nights ... with two sleeping bags, two tarps wrapped around me," he said, adding his breath frosted around his face. "It’s not easy." He has been homeless in York Region on and off for more than three years. "It is like living one of your worst nightmares every day, until you get housing," he said. But he wants to live a better life and is attending a new program offered by Inn From the Cold in Newmarket. "I have been struggling for a while trying to get a little bit more ahead ... ever since I lost my house," he said. "This seemed something positive and in the right direction." Getting Ahead is an eightweek, 16-session program that began Oct. 17 and is designed to help homeless individuals build the needed resources to improve their lives. "I’m hoping something good can come from it, so we can help other people who are in similar situations," said Melodie Coulton, Doyon’s girlfriend, who was also in the program. "Because when you are struggling and you are homeless, any little bit counts." Doyon has a job, but because of a number of circumstances, including injury and health issues, he struggles to find housing. He started one of the tent cities in Newmarket and has rented places, he said, but there have been difficulties. "A lot of the places that you can afford ... are places in the patch," he said, describing it as the "ghetto of Newmarket." "There are people up drinking all night or smoking crack all night ... it is really hard to keep a job or get any sleep," he said. Coulton, who has been homeless since June, would like to go back to school and find a job where she can help others. Despite their ambitions, homeless people can face a num-

She described the program as "client led," that guides participants through a workbook to identify needed resources to get ahead. "They are the ones leading their journey," she said. This is the first time the program will run in York Region and is funded by a seed grant from the Ontario Trillium Foun-

dation. The first section takes a look at the participants’ lives and uses visual aspects to self-examine their living situations. "I’m projecting there is going to be a lot of raw emotion in the beginning," Martin said. "They know they are homeless, we don’t have to tell them that. When you actually see it on paper, it becomes so much more real for them." Then they look where they would like to be in three months, she said. "The shorter goal, the more attainable it potentially may be," said Martin. "A lot of them can’t even think past one day." She said even running an eight-week program is a big challenge, but Inn From the Cold tries to help remove barriers by providing transportation tickets, breakfast and lunch. The program also helps guide the participants through "the hidden rules of the economic class" and learning about available resources, said Martin. She hopes the participants feel a sense of accomplishment from the program. "I just hope that it is a positive experience for them and they can see that there is a future," she said, adding the program is the easy part. There is also an aftercare piece to ensure participants are still on track. "And let them know you are one of their resources, and you are their support," she said. Looking ahead, Doyon and Coulton want to find housing and use what they learn to give back. "If you can learn something, get further ahead, then maybe one day you can be on the other side of it and be helping people," said Doyon. There will be a second session of the program in January. The Inn From the Cold winter shelter service will be opening Nov. 6 from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. until March. They have a number of upcoming fundraisers to support their services and programs. Canada’s justice system gets 7/10, activist says l Continued from page 1

crowd gathered to hear him speak at the Green Valley Alliance Church in Bradford Oct. 23. "I can’t prove that, but I think I have a fair bit of experience of wrongful convictions and I think that is probably a very conservative estimate," added the man who has played a central role in virtually every case of the wrongfully convicted to hit the headlines in the past two decades. Known just as much for his trademark shock of untamable hair as being the co-founder of the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted, Lockyer has helped to exonerate 25 people convicted of the most heinous and violent crimes, including Donald Marshall, David Milgaard, Steven Truscott, Romeo Phillion, William MullinsJohnson and Robert Baltovich. He was instrumental in exonerating Morin, whose

story mirrors those in a long, heartbreaking, almost unbelievable, litany of the wrongfully convicted during the two-hour lecture. It involves some of the most vulnerable members of society being "caught up" in a system plagued by a combination of prosecutors concealing evidence, "creative" police work, blunders of a pathologist, barely credible witnesses or shoddy instructions from a trial judge, Lockyer explained. An inquiry culminating in the Kaufman report into Morin’s case, for example, uncovered evidence of police and prosecutorial misconduct, misrepresentation of forensic evidence by the Ontario Centre of Forensic Sciences, and resulted in the chief prosecutor’s resignation. Sometimes, there are unexpected apologies given, Peter Ellis of Newton Robinson said during the Q&A portion of the eve-

ning. Ellis drew an audible gasp from the audience when he asked if Lockyer thought a family member was responsible for the rape and murder of nineyear-old Jessop in 1984, to which Lockyer responded DNA has never been identified to anyone therefore no arrest. Ellis added the owner of a restaurant where he and Morin - now married with two teenage boys and holding a senior position at Pearson Airport were having lunch one day approached the two men at their table. "The owner turned out to be an ex-RCMP officer, who asked if he was Guy Paul Morin," Ellis recalled. "He extended his hand to (Morin) and he apologized. It was an amazing thing to see." Except in rare cases like the Morin inquiry, there’s a significant lack of accountability in the system, Lockyer said, adding cases

rape and murder of his 12year-old friend, Lynne Harper, in 1959 after a 15day trial. "It was a very long haul indeed to clear Steven, but at the end of it, worth of every minute," Lockyer said, adding how terrible it must have been for the 14-yearold, on death row for three months before his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment, convinced renovations at the Goderich jail where he was being held was the building of a scaffold for his hanging. "Thankfully, we don’t have the death penalty," Lockyer said, adding Stephen Harper is the only prime minister in the past 70 years across party lines to support the death penalty. Rating Canada’s justice system a 7 out of 10, Lockyer said it is a reasonably good system, multiple times better than the U.S., but with a whole lot of room for improvement.

girl and me thinking my brother did it because I knew I didn’t," he said. Lockyer says a government-funded tribunal should be established in Canada similar to the one created in the United Kingdom over 20 years ago that has cleared more than 100 wrongful convictions. Currently, the process of overturning a wrongful conviction is difficult to go through, complex, timeconsuming and expensive. Few people can afford to go through it and few cases do. A post-conviction tribunal would examine and double-check the work of courts in important cases, look at each individual claim of wrongful conviction and send the most contentious to appeal, Lockyer said. It took 48 years to clear Steven Truscott’s name, 10 of which under an appeal with Lockyer at the helm of the case of the 14-year-old who was convicted and sentenced to death for the

of misconduct are only brought to light via public inquiries. Case in point was the massive public inquiry of now disgraced forensic examiner Dr. Charles Smith, whose erroneous findings resulted in Mullins-Johnson’s wrongful conviction and 11-year-incarceration for the sodomy and strangulation death of his fouryear-old niece when she had, in fact, died of natural causes. The total lack of any crime at all in that case underlines the enormous harm "the miscarriage of justice" can cause, not just to the individual, but also the families torn apart in its wake, Lockyer said. Mullins-Johnson, a member of the Ojibway First Nations, in broken voice and obvious stutter, said during his appeal testimony the wrongful conviction destroyed his life and split his family. "It had my brother thinking I killed his little

ABOUT US

PM must be ready for post-NAFTA world U.S. president Donald Trump’s ongoing game of chicken with the North American Free Trade Agreement is no doubt wreaking havoc on the blood pressure levels of many business people across Canada. Trump voiced his displeasure with NAFTA during the election campaign, but who could have guessed he would be consistent on the file after taking office? After all, this is the man who promised to release his tax reforms, replace Obamacare with "insurance for everybody," create 25 million jobs, raise the minimum wage, not take vacations, end violent crime in Chicago and create an "artistically beautiful" wall on the Mexican border. Trump’s distaste for NAFTA has not only survived the chaos of a dysfunctional White House, but has also infected talks, as American demands become increasingly untenable. So, it’s likely many are wondering what happens if Trump scuttles the deal that has seen Canada and Mexico become the two largest destinations for U.S. exports since NAFTA was initiated in 1994. The answer is no one is quite sure. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said Ottawa will be ready for any eventuality, but he’s not about to reveal any game plan. Legally, experts suggest we would revert back to preNAFTA Canada-U. S. trade agreements. Failing that, our relations would be subject to World Trade Organization rules. But, would anyone doubt Trump’s willingness to impose duties on anything and everything, in blatant disregard for bilateral deals he had nothing to do with negotiating? Dissolution of NAFTA alone could create seismic tremors for Canadian companies conditioned to having unfettered access to the U.S. Who knows what impact tariffs would have on Canada’s economy? Of course, the U.S. Congress could have something to say about all this. Congress wields constitutional power over international commerce/duties and it’s possible that it may act to preserve access to a enticing Mexican market so charmingly free of labour and environmental standards. But that would mean more conflict with a president who is already irate over his inability to dismantle his predecessor’s health care program. NAFTA’s fate could even land in U.S. Supreme Court. All this upheaval is not necessarily inevitable. A sliver of hope emerged when Trump acknowledged the possibility of a two-way agreement with Canada. Our PM needs to jump on this opportunity, should NAFTA talks stumble. Trudeau may support a renewed NAFTA, but as he is charged with protecting Canada’s interests and not Mexico’s, he needs to be open to an exclusive free-trade agreement between Canada and the U.S.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • We’re the solution to deadly roads Re: Petition puts public safety on radar over ’death trap’ roads in Georgina, Oct. 4. Ravenshoe Road in Georgina has been much discussed, especially of late, as there was a very tragic accident on that road just a few weeks ago. I came upon the most recent and very tragic accident on Ravenshoe Road, on September 19, 2017 when I attempted to travel west on Ravenshoe Road. This accident resulted in the death of two people, with several others injured. It was a horrific sight and one I will not forget for a long time. It was a catastrophic event. I am, at this time, hesitant to travel Ravenshoe Road West. I

saw that devastation and am still trying to work through the vision of the wreckage that was on display. That being said, I want to relay the most recent experience I had concerning Ravenshoe Road in Georgina. My spouse and I were travelling north along Warden Avenue and were stopped at the red light at Warden and Ravenshoe Road Oct. 13. Imagine our dismay as we watched a tandem axle dump truck with a trailer cruise through the intersection of Warden and Ravenshoe Road at high speed on a red light. Imagine our further dismay as we witnessed a woman in a black SUV fly, at a high speed, sailing through the intersection behind the dump truck, on

a full red light! She was tailgating the dump truck. Both were speeding along through a red light, without any attempt to stop. Thankfully the red-light cameras flashed, so we know their transgressions were recorded. My only wish is that their names would be published and that they would be fined $2,000 or more. The issue with Ravenshoe Road (and all other roads) is not that there is not enough police presence. The issue is with us, the people driving these roads. "We" have become complacent and ignorant, and some of us seem to believe the idea that we are self-important and beyond reproach. Do we really think we are beyond reproach? Do some of us really believe

that running a red light makes us more important, that running a red light is justifiable because we feel we have obligations that supersede common decency and traffic laws? What is wrong with our roads? US. Not the York Regional Police. Not the Town of Georgina. Not Ravenshoe Road or Warden Avenue or Kennedy Road. US. Plain and Simple. WE need to be accountable. WE need to traverse our roads as though our loved ones are on the road. WE need to traverse our road as thought our loved ones or other’s loved ones, are on the roads. Michele Potter, Georgina

A multi-vehicle fatal crash July 27 on Hwy. 48, north of Old Homestead Road, involved several transport trucks, commercial and passenger vehicles.

Charges laid in Hwy. 48 fatal Inattentive truck drivers ’time bombs’ on highways, says OPP’s top cop HEIDI RIEDNER hriedner@yrmg.com

viour of any kind," Hawkes said, adding inattentive truck drivers are "time bombs travelling down the highways." "We are putting drivers on notice that the OPP will pursue every investigative avenue following serious collisions and hold at-fault drivers accountable to the full extent of the law." The OPP plans to use every tool at its disposal to curb these kind of accidents, including a "heat map" of where the most accidents occur or potentially happen because of things like construction and then focusing resources in those areas. The heat map can help compile data on where, when and why accidents are happening. Officer training to deal with commercial vehicles will be increased and the OPP with strengthen its partnerships with the trucking industry and the Ministry of Transportation to get the message out. Between 1995 and 2014 there was a 66 per cent decline in the fatality rate from large truck collisions, while at the same time large truck vehicle registrations increased by 75 per cent, The Ontario Trucking Association said in a release Friday, one day after the OPP announcement and on the heels of a fatal collision on Hwy. 401 near Cambridge involving two transport trucks and a dump truck.

A 31-year-old Scarborough man is facing a slew of charges regarding the horrific chain-reaction crash on Hwy. 48 in Sutton that killed two people and sent three others to hospital July 27. Jatheesen Krishnamoorthy is charged with two counts each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm and one count of dangerous driving, according to the Ontario Provincial Police, which put transport truck drivers "on notice" Oct. 26 after laying charges in three separate collisions involving tractor trailers that claimed the lives of six people this summer. The other two collisions occurred on Hwy. 401 near Port Hope and ChathamKent. Manjit Parmar, 52, of Brampton, was charged in the Chatham-Kent collision with two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing

bodily harm. Baljinder Singth, 56, also of Brampton, was charged in the Port Hope collision with two counts of dangerous driving causing death and two counts causing death by criminal negligence. Two people were killed in each of the collisions, in which it’s alleged a transport truck crashed into traffic that was stopped or had slowed down due to road construction or a collision, OPP commissioner Vince Hawkes said during the press conference Thursday. The four men, one woman and 14-year-old boy who were killed in the crashes were all occupants of vehicles at the end of traffic queues. "This series of horrific collisions is driver inattention at its worst," Hawkes said, calling them "the most tragic reminder in recent history of the tremendous toll on the lives of innocent citizens when commercial transport truck drivers are not paying full attention to the road or is fatigued." While Hawkes commended those in the commercial trucking industry that are driving safely and doing their part to "keep our roads safe," he added transport truck drivers have a larger role to play than anybody else in accomplishing that. "There is zero room for error, carelessness, negligence or poor driving beha-

WHEN WILL JESUS RETURN TO THE EARTH? About two thousand years ago Jesus Christ promised “I will come again”. The second last verse of the last book of the Bible records the assurance of Jesus: “Surely, I come quickly. Amen”. But Jesus has not yet returned, so is the Promise still valid? When Jesus ascended to heaven from the Mount of Olives, the angels testified: “ This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11). Jesus taught his followers to pray: “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” - part of the famous “Lord’s Prayer”. Without a doubt, the gospel Jesus preached concerned the theme of the Kingdom of God and his disciples thought he was going to establish it right then, restoring the ancient Kingdom of Israel which was God’s Kingdom on earth in Old Testament times. However, Jesus informed them that other events must happen first. Some of the events Jesus said must happen first, before he returns (and they can be observed today) are: the restoration of the nation of Israel (after centuries of dispersion of the Israelis into all nations of the earth); earthquakes, pestilences, famines, increasing conflicts, terrorism, violence, atrocities and wars, and such perplexity in the nations which offer no solutions. In other words, because the world is in such a chaotic situation caused by disobedience and non-recognition to God’s ways, only the promised divine intervention will bring about God’s promise to transform our world when the “earth will be full of the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea” Habakkuk 2:14.
