Georgina’s new top cop, Superintendent Bruce West, addressed concerns raised recently by some members of the public who fear, despite an overall decrease in crime, acts of vandalism and thefts from vehicles are actually on the rise.

Keswick resident Tasha Corrigan is one of them.

“It is surprising and disheartening the amount of people who have posted about their cars being broken into and items being stolen from their cars,” wrote Ms Corrigan in a letter to town council last month,

Council authorized a $245,000 contract for Toronto company New Line Skateparks to design and build the much-anticipated second park in Georgina.

A nine-week construction phase is expected, which puts completion of the project around mid-November.

“People are getting fed up,” she added, stating she has not seen an increase in police presence in her area of town in the south end of Keswick.

Ms Corrigan, who had her GPS unit stolen from her car parked in her driveway, says her community is “outraged”.

York Regional Police confirmed a spike in mischief-related incidents and “opportunity thefts” throughout the area this past July.

More than 30 thefts from vehicles had been reported for the month of June alone.

Most occurred in Keswick.

In most cases, the vehicles were reported to be unlocked and parked in driveways, with items stolen overnight, said YRP Det. Sgt. Peter Heard.

Of the 122 thefts from vehicles reported, almost 80 per cent of those calls came in from Keswick.

He added, however, that the incidents have “died off” and a number of charges were laid against young

offenders in some of the incidents.

At least one young offender has also been charged in connection with vandalism involving graffiti.

Very few of the thefts involved damage being done to vehicles or windows being smashed, added Superintendent West, who said nine individuals were arrested for mischief during the past six months and eight in connection with thefts from vehicles.

While police are making arrests and headway in crime prevention, community-based initiatives such as the “lock it or lose it” campaign are examples of strategic partnerships toward a community-based shared responsibility to prevent crime.

Previously stationed at No. 2 district in Richmond Hill, Superintendent West said the lock it or lose it campaign has been “very successful in other areas in the region”.

The goal of the pro-active crime prevention program is to encourage drivers to take a few simple precautions that will protect their vehicles from theft.

Stating an unlocked door or an open window is an invitation to thieves, the program reminds drivers to always roll up their vehicles’ windows; keep valuables out of sight; lock their doors; and pocket their keys.

Supt. West started his 20-year career in Georgina and has been a senior officer for the past five years, most recently in charge of 2 district headquarters in Richmond Hill.

With a total of 107 staff including 83 officers, 20 detectives and 4 civilian members, Georgina’s force has the highest clearance rate in the region at 72.5 per cent, he said.

The numbers not only indicate a significant jump in cleared cases within Georgina over previous years, but also demonstrate a 10-per-cent higher clearance rate compared to the 62-per-cent average for the rest of the region.

“We are one of the safest communities in Canada,” said Supt.

West, who added crimes against property and traffic safety remain high on residents priority lists.

Crimes against property, for example, decreased by 16.7 per cent.

But statistics also reveal Georgina has the highest crime rate per capita in the region, edging out Newmarket and Vaughan.

That statistic, however, is part of a downward trend in per capita crime rates in Georgina showing a steady decrease from 2007.

A crime mapping icon on the YRP website also allows residents to see what type of incidents are occurring in their neighbourhood and how many traffic stops have been performed.

It provides the general public with information regarding the nature and location of various crimes and criminal trends in their community.

But some suspect while reported crimes are on the decrease, police statistics may not be an accurate reflection of circumstances since they do not address unreported cases.

Ward 3 Councillor Dave Szollosy wondered how wide a possible “disconnect” could be, referring to a number of residents on Fairbank Avenue in the Willow Beach area who had their cars broken into a few weeks ago.

“The police were called, but never came,” said Councillor Szollosy.

“Since the incidents went unreported, it suggests perhaps the numbers may actually be higher.”

Supt. West said he would have

to look into the matter, but added while police don’t always attend, someone should have called back.

“We can’t track something that’s not reported,” he said.

While frontline officers are most likely already familiar with problem areas, tracking is an important tool to help police forces determine where resources can be best directed.

Reporting crime, whether online or by call-in, is key, added Det. Sgt. Heard.

“We encourage people to report (crimes to police), even if they think it is only loose change or a minor theft, so we can fashion our initiatives around them,” the officers said.

FIRE: Neighbour hears alarm and rushes to help

Careless smoking cause of Monday fire

Careless smoking is the suspected cause of a house fire in the Simcoe Landing subdivision in Keswick last night.

Neighbours heard a smoke alarm going off in the Ian Drive residence just after 7 p.m. Monday and managed to knock down the fire in an upstairs bathroom with a fire extinguisher before the arrival of the Georgina Fire Department, said Deputy Fire Chief Steve Richardson.

The fire was contained to the bathroom, however, damages are estimated to be $15,000 due to smoke and heat damage to the second floor of the home.

No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported at the scene.

Teacher job action won’t change deal

ISSUE: Unions want teacher members to stop voluntary school activities in protest of Liberal bill

A

s the first day of school approached, we were inundated with messages from teachers unions criticizing the provincial government’s pledge to give itself the power to impose contracts and ban strikes for the next two years.

The unions insisted the move by the government would end up negatively impacting students.

It turns out it was the unions that made that prediction come true.

On the day the Progressive Conservatives supported the minority Liberals’ bill, teacher unions announced extracurricular activities for students would be curbed.

What happened to ensuring students wouldn’t become pawns in this fight?

Actually, there really is no fight.

The move has been made.

The bill received support and was passed.

There’s no reason to believe it will be rescinded, so what’s the point of union leaders asking public school teachers to stop giving their time outside of classroom hours?

What was the point of yesterday’s expected one-day protest by high school teachers?

And what’s the point of Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario president Sam Hammond announcing he’s not going to put a time limit on work action?

How is this protecting students?

Sadly, it’s not just students who lose out.

Teachers certainly don’t have to take part in extracurricular activities, because there’s no debating they take place outside of a teacher’s

regular hours of work.

But those who do put in the extra hours do so because they want to; because they love doing it.

Now, as they’re being mandated by their unions to stop, they’re pawns, too.

That will hurt those teachers who are there for all the right reasons.

Whether or not you agree with the bill, deemed necessary because school unions didn’t accept a deal three other teachers unions signed, there comes a time when you have to accept your fate.

Whether or not you agree with the province’s bill, which was deemed necessary because the public school unions didn’t accept a deal three other teachers unions signed, there comes a time when you have to accept your fate.

The province’s hardball offer was good enough for three other teachers unions, so it should be good enough for the holdouts, too.

It’s hypocritical of the unions to say their moves are made to protect students when they’re willing to hold them hostage to get what they want.

Chalk this one up as a loss, after several deals that can only be considered clear-cut victories, and get back to providing students with the best all-around education possible.

BOTTOM LINE: Job action will only hurt students and teachers and won’t change the deal.

Injured deer survived, released back in wild Re: Thanks to group for helping injured deer, letter to the editor by Charity Platt, Sept. 6.

We would like to update the many readers who are concerned and curious about the welfare of the doe who was struck by a car on Black River Road Sept. 2 and brought to Shades of Hope Wildlife Refuge.

It is these demonstrations of caring that renew our faith in humanity every once in a while – and reinforces our conviction the refuge is a worthwhile and necessary service.

The doe arrived in shock and with severe brain swelling and would, without doubt, have died of her injuries without speedy intervention. After administering drugs to diminish swelling, the doe was given nourishment and a safe environment in which to let nature and time do the rest.

It was a waiting game for a few days, but she showed

remarkable progress every day. There was concern that her sight, which was impaired for a few days, may not return in full but, by the end of the week, it was apparent she was ready to return to her rightful place in the wild.

She was released a week from the day she was injured and the last sight of her was the white tail disappearing into the bush.

Thanks to the people who cared enough to ensure that this beautiful animal got a second chance at life. It was a wonderful outcome and a good start to Shades of Hope’s dream of many more such outcomes.

Not looking forward to hard, plastic seats Re: Bus schedules undergo changes, Aug. 30.

I have been taking the GO bus for a number of years to get to and from work in Newmarket.

I am not looking forward to taking a smaller bus and having to sit on hard plastic seats for over an hour.

YRT buses are too small to be going from Sutton to Newmarket.

Man paid it forward This has never happen to me before, although I’ve heard of it happening to other people.

On Aug. 18, while waiting in the drive-through at Tim Hortons in Sutton, I noticed a truck waiting patiently at the other entrance but no one would let him in, so I did. I never gave it a second thought. I placed a very large order and when I drove up to pay, I was told my order had been paid for by him.

Now, I could understand if he paid for my coffee, but my whole order? How wonderful was he. I cannot repay him so I would like to say thank you.

Pefferlaw’s Peninsula on TV tonight

longtime Georgina restaurant and resort is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with a splashy new look and a segment on the Food Network’s Restaurant Takeover show.

The Peninsula Resort at Holmes Point in Pefferlaw has been serving up meals and offering lodging to sports enthusiasts and vacationers for five decades as of labour day weekend.

‘(The crew) liked that we are a unique destination, being that we are accessible by car, boat, sea plane or snowmobile but still less than an hour from Toronto and they liked the fact our family was celebrating its 50th year in business.’

The riverfront eatery’s fresh, new look was designed by the popular show’s crew and will kick off a new beginning of a new era.

the show’s directors read the family’s letter.

A crew arrived with its chef and designer in tow and “took over our premises” for a week, Mr. Kucharchuk said. “(The crew) liked that we are a unique

destination, being that we are accessible by car, boat, sea plane or snowmobile but still less than an hour from Toronto and they liked the fact our family was celebrating its 50th year in business,” Mr. Kucharchuk said.

Near the end of May, Restaurant Makeover announced it would arrive June 10 to begin filming.

“We were sworn to secrecy because they didn’t want anyone knowing until after the reveal June 21. The actual construction took only six days, but they needed the full 11 days for filming. We re-opened on Saturday, June 23 with a freshly decorated dining room sporting a nautical theme. It’s beautiful, just what was needed.”

“The entire experience was very interesting,” added Jerry’s wife and business partner, Jacqueline.

“Jerry and I are so appreciative that the decisions on decor were taken off our shoulders and ... we are still happily married,” she joked.

It was also a bonus that the construction was left to professionals, she said.

“It was nice having others do what is usually our work. The cast and crew were wonderful and they stayed at the resort until the project was finished. They put together a fireworks display in our park the night of the reveal to commemorate our 50th anniversary and dedicated it to Jerry’s father, Steve,” she said.

The show is now called Restaurant Takeover, which airs Thursday nights at 9. The Penninsula takeover airs Sept. 13 on the Food Network.

s it just me?

I live in Pefferlaw and there are times when people will go by on horseback.

It is really great to see the beautiful horses. I have just one problem: they leave behind huge piles of droppings.

They are on the road and the sidewalk. We have to pick up after our dogs so why don’t they have to come back after a ride and pick those up.

People try to get around the piles but when walking their dogs or pushing their strollers it can be difficult.

Also, I don’t want to look out my window and look at that every day. Is it just me?

PUBLIC TRANSIT:

High school special bus routes could be axed: YRT Eight GO shuttles and high school special bus routes in York Region could be axed if regional council endorses the YRT/Viva 2013 annual service plan Sept. 20.

A total of 41 routes have been identified for restructuring, schedule adjustments and elimination of duplicate or overlapping service.

More than 20 routes are proposed for some form of decreased service, be it reduced hours or discontinuation.

Recommendations outlined in the service plan, which include two new routes, are estimated to save $2 million in 2013.

Proposed changes will affect school spe-

cials, GO shuttles, contracted TTC routes operating north of Steeles Avenue and YRT routes with low ridership.

School specials on the chopping board include routes to Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy, Markham District High School, Huron Heights Secondary School and a route from Stouffville to Unionville High School, Bill Crothers Secondary School and Markham District High School. Shuttles on the way out include three serving the Aurora, Newmarket and North Richvale GO stations.

The changes would be implemented in April.

Cedar strip boat took 300 hours of labour to restore

pril in Canada can be a deceitful month; full of lies regarding its promise of warm and sunny days.

It was on just such a day that

I attended the spring meeting of the Antique Outboard Motor Club (Maple Leaf Chapter).

A cold wind cut across the parking lot as one dashed toward the welcoming open door, venting warm air filled with the beckoning smell of fresh coffee and the happy

babble of friendly voices.

Glancing back from the doorway, I saw the full extent of what had caught my eye during the dash.

There, sitting all by itself, stood a yellow trailer holding a pretty little cedar strip boat.

white sign with black lettering had attached itself to the top of the boat. “For Sale”.

At the rear of the boat sat the outline of a large man, huddled under robes in a lawnchair. Other than parked cars, waiting for their owner’s return, the rest of the parking lot was void.

I entered the large building foyer, waved to a few familiar faces and headed directly to the coffee urn, which bestowed a steaming cup of the black liquid into a large plastic cup. I added milk and immediately headed outside again.

Shivering slightly, between grateful sips of hot liquid, I examined the boat in detail (or, as they say, from “stem to stern”) until I reached the huddled figure in the chair. “Hi”, I shouted, “What a beautiful boat!”

“Thank-you”, the figure responded, as he pushed the blanket aside and stood up.

“I have spent three hundred hours restoring her and she is a Ross.”

He went on to explain that the J. H. Ross Canoe and Boat Company built a variety of watercraft in Orillia between 1873 and 1964, when the factory burnt down and the company went out of business.

Their cedar strip boats were designed for Lake Simcoe and were somewhat wider and deeper than most cedar strips, due to the unpredictable nature of the Lake.

This one was built in 1950.

He also described the work he had done on the dual cockpit 14-foot craft, including the “West System” bottom covering.

I could see the quality in his work and wondered what background he could have, to be able to end up with such a magnificent result. His name was Gary and I guessed he was somewhere in his 80s.

I knew I was looking at a value somewhere in the double thousands and, although it was a thing of beauty, it was completely outside any budget I could come up with, so I thanked Gary and began retracing my steps to the meeting place.

Gary headed me off and said, “I’ve been trying to sell this boat for a year and really have to get rid of it.

I don’t have any room and have two more cedar strips that I’m anxious to get working on.”

I suggested that a parking lot in the middle of April might not be the right place to try and sell it and that I was sure another month or two would open better venues.

Poor Gary was desperate and I was the only ear in sight.

“Tell you what”, he said, “If you are interested, I will sell it to you for the cost of my materials.”

Now he really had my attention but I wasn’t out to cheat a pensioner and tried to convince him that his 300 hours of labour really did have value.

“You will get far more if you take it to the boat show in Orillia this summer”, I argued, “and if you put a good period motor on it you will get an even better return”.

Alas, Gary named the figure he wanted, we negotiated for the “TEE-NEE” trailer it was sitting on and I had bought a boat.

Since then, I have bought and mechanically restored a 1955 Johnson 25 horsepower motor (the size everyone agrees would be perfect for this boat) and I hope to have it back in Lake Simcoe this month.

I still correspond with Gary and he now has another cedar strip for sale; this one is a 16-foot Fontaine, built in Pefferlaw in 1961, for (of course) use on Lake Simcoe.

It is matched with a 1958 Johnson 35 horsepower “super-quiet” motor.

BAG TAG EXEMPTION WEEK SEPT 24 – 27, 2012 To help with fall clean-up around the house, your garbage collection day during the week of Sept 24th has been designated as Bag Tag Exemption Day’.

On your regular garbage day, you may put up to five untagged bags, items or containers of garbage out for collection. Any bags, items or containers in excess of the maximum five will require a garbage tag. Large articles (household non recyclable items) are now included in the Bag Tag Exemption Day Program. White good items such as refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers, hot water tanks are not included. Georgina trounced Markham 7-2 in Friday’s 8 a.m. game then went on to edge out West Hill at 12:30 p.m. 2-1.

Saturday’s morning game was a draw against the Pickering Panthers but the Blaze fired it up in the afternoon against Georgetown with a 5-0 victory. Goaltenders Deegan Plati and John Delaney were unstoppable, helping clinch the shutout. The Blaze entered day three undefeated, which secured them a spot in the semi-finals Sunday morning. The semis were hard-fought, but Georgina came out on top winning 5-3 over the East Ender Ticats, taking Georgina to the finals against the Orangeville Flyers. Unfortunately, the Blaze came up short Sunday afternoon losing the final game 5-1.

Car crashes into Baldwin plaza

Water reclamation site chosen

A convenience store in Baldwin became an unexpected drive through last week after a vehicle jumped the sidewalk and crashed its front window.

According to witnesses, a small sedan crashed into the front window and wall of the former General Store in the Coffee Time plaza on Hwy. 48 around 3 p.m. Sept. 5.

A large bang sounding like an explosion was heard, followed by the sound of breaking glass reported witnesses.

One person added the elderly driver of the

vehicle, who appeared dazed just moments after the crash, had already reversed out of the vacant store unit by the time they arrived at the scene.

Tenants of adjacent units said it seemed like the walls were shaking due to the impact of the vehicle.

No serious injuries were reported.

Police have not confirmed if charges will be laid in connection with the incident.

York Region’s environmental services committee will recommend the site for its new East Gwillimbury water reclamation centre today.

Following a lengthy review, the region has chosen a property one kilometre north of Queensville Sideroad with an entrance off 2nd Concession.

Technical criteria, public comment and other factors were considered before the site was chosen, according to a staff report.

Four sites north of Queensville Sideroad were considered.

If the recommended site is not approved through an environmental assessment, the existing Holland Landing lagoon property remains a viable alternative, the report adds.

Staff also recommends treated water flow into the East Holland River at Queensville Sideroad immediately south of the Queensville Sideroad bridge.

East Gwillimbury council played no part in recommending the site, Mayor Virginia

HEALTH: Region holds well test blitz Sept. 23, 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

While the Environment Ministry remains mum on a possible contamination source affecting some private wells on Catering Road in Sutton, one local professional in the well industry is speaking out on the issue.

Roger Boadway’s family has been in the well drilling and service industry since his grandfather started the business 100 years ago in 1912.

With decades of experience in the industry, the long-time Sutton resident suspects the problem on Catering Road just south of Sutton District High School may be attributed to surface rather than ground water or improper collection and storage methods of water samples.

“If anything is getting in, it’s most likely from the top,” he says, adding a well should be periodically cleaned and checked for faults.

That means checking to see if the well cap is entirely sealed,

ensuring proper drainage from the surface of the well, and that the casing is in good condition and also to code, which means 40 centimetres or 16 inches above ground surface, according to Mr. Boadway.

He says even drilled wells don’t go one forever, having a life span of 40 to 50 years on average.

“It’s an easy thing to ignore,” he says. “Out of sight, out of mind and if it aint broke, don’t fix it.”

But he says well owners need to maintain their wells to Regulation 903 as set out by the MOE. The provincial regulation and act set out minimum requirements for choosing a location, constructing, maintaining and shutting down wells. Licensing requirements for well contractors and technicians are also outlined.

“Any wells drilled prior to 2003 would probably not have proper well caps and appropriate heights above finished grade,” he says.

Mr. Boadway reiterates the importance of testing, which the

Region of York recommends be performed two to three times during the year, preferably after a heavy rain or snow melt.

Testing is also recommended after well construction is completed and the well has been disinfected, as well as when a well has not been in use for long periods of time, such as at seasonal residences.

After reading the plight of the Catering Road residents with high levels of bacteria in their test results, many Georgina residents off the municipal water and sewer grid are planning on taking advantage of free well water tests courtesy of the Region Sept. 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sutton arena.

The timing couldn’t be better says Mr. Boadway, but he stresses taking water samples correctly can be “tricky”, but paramount to accurate test results.

at either the Georgina Civic Centre or Pefferlaw library for collection for testing through the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, here are some tips to follow for collection: • Sterile, 250-ml bottles containing the preservative sodium thiosulphate (white powder) to prevent the collected water from degrading are available at York Region Health Services offices and the Georgina Civic Centre.

• Do not touch or handle the preservative. Do not rinse the bottle as this will remove some or all of the preservative and ruin the sample.

• Disconnect or bypass all water treatment devices such as water softeners and carbon filters.

• Samples should be taken as close as possible to the well head (kitchen tap) • Remove any aerators or fau-

cet screens from the tap. Then, turn on the tap and flush it of any debris that has built up around the threads.

• Clean the end of the tap and threads with either a bleach and water solution (one part bleach to 10 parts water) or rubbing alcohol swab. If you are unable to remove the aerator from the end of the tap, submerge the end of the tap with a container filled with a bleach and water solution.

• Wash your hands using soap and water prior to handling testing equipment.

• Let the cold water run until you have changed the water in the well (15 minutes) • Water samples must be kept cold. Keep the filled bottle refrigerated until you are ready to bring it to the appropriate drop-off location. When ready, place the filled bottle in an insulated cooler with ice packs and transport to the nearest location. * Source Boadway Well Drilling & Service; Region of York.

Sample bottles for bacterial analysis of private wells may be picked up and dropped off at the Georgina Civic Centre Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and at the Pefferlaw library on Pete’s Lane.

Passed away peacefully in the presence of her children on September 10, 2012 at Southlake Regional Health Centre at the age of 87.

She was a devoted mother to Diane Littleford (deceased), Linda (John) Brown, Judith, Jo-Anne, and Norman (Wanda). Baba will be missed by grandchildren David Littleford, Katrina and Ian Brown (and fiancee Katrina); and great-grandchildren Callum and Avery Littleford (and their mother Lynn Austin). Predeceased by her parents Adolf and Mary Specht and brother Adolf (the late Kay). She will be missed by her brother Rudolf, sisterin-law Maxine, her nephews Michael, Erich and Alan, niece Deborah and dear friends in Thunder Bay, Newmarket, Sutton and London.

She was friendly, generous, devoted to her family, loved animals, and enjoyed cooking and baking (especially perogies and cinnamon buns). A special thank you to the nurses and doctors on the third and sixth floors at Southlake who took compassionate care of our mother during the last difficult days of her life.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the OSPCA. Mass of Christian Burial to take place on Saturday, September 15 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church (17955 Leslie Street, Newmarket) at 12 pm with one hour of visitation immediately prior to the service. Loving wife of the late Harry for 71 years, beloved mother of Lynne (Penni) Lewis (David), Sandy Penrose (Jon), Eric Penrose (Charlotte). Proud grandmother of Dee (Scott), David, Amber (Matt), James, Ruthanne, Simon, and great grandchildren DJ, Daniel, Mya, Jonah, and Audrey.

Survived by her brothers and sistersin-law Clare (Carola) and Murray (Vera) and predeceased by her brother Arie (Yvonne) and in-laws Nora Huyck (Henry) and Doris Harper.

Ann was born May 15, 1920 in den Hague, Holland of parents Arie and Anna Barselaar and she arrived in Canada with her family in 1929. An unsquelchable positive spirit, always quick to encourage and offer help, she loved crafts, puzzles and word games and was the undisputed Queen of Scrabble and Quiddler. A dedicated member of Christian Baptist Church in Newmarket and Knox Presbyterian Church in Port Dover, she is an outstanding witness of her faith.

Visitation will be at Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home, 157 Main St. S, Newmarket on Friday, September 14th from 10:00-11:30am, with the service in the Chapel at 2 p.m. Interment at Newmarket Cemetery following the service.
