Green crops need cash York Region Food Network’s upStream uses fish, worms, to grow healthy plants, but program’s funds drying up

T

he York Region Food Network’s innovative urban farm facility is upStream – without a paddle.

Newmarket-based upStream is a pioneering, zerowaste agricultural initiative that grows a variety of greens using aquaponics, a small ecosystem where plants and fish thrive together in a symbiotic relationship. The result is a highly productive and environmentally sustainable growing method.

Established in 2013 with a help of modest Ontario Centres for Excellence grant, the non-profit entity is under financial siege.

Unless support is forthcoming, it will be forced to close its doors Jan. 31.

The lauded facility, a magnet for students, volunteers, shoppers and people interested in building their own home-based aquaponics systems, was started as a social enterprise, network executive director Joan Stonehocker said.

“We cultivate community by providing opportunities for engagement, education and inspiration,” she said. “upStream improves the world around us, one bit, one bite, one belief at a time.”

Stonehocker and part-time co-ordinator Tricia Richens envisioned making enough to pay the leased commercial property’s rent.

“And there’s the learning curve,” Stonehocker said. “Like farming, there an art and a science.”

Amid the soothing gurgle of water and impossibly vibrant green of lettuce, kale, Swiss char, peppers and bok choy blooming in water-based trays, Richens laments, “It’s just costing more than we bring in.”

The duo estimates between $50,000 and $60,000 annually would keep the operation afloat.

“Ideally, we’d like to partner with some other agency to share our knowledge, equipment and continue the community engagement that has been such a success,” Richens said. “The other alternative is to let people know that the facility exists, will be shutting down and has equipment and information to offer over the next few months.” upStream has been a labour of love for the women and volunteers. The affair hasn’t been unrequited. The hyper-local produce is delivered weekly to a cluster of dedicated commercial customers.

The Aurora Food Pantry benefits from the greens in that the produce feeds its clients and because of the natural growing process, the food stays fresher longer.

The network’s mission is to provide programs that bring nutritious food to residents, advocate for food security and educate on options for accessing food locally.

The upStream project, one of the biggest systems of its type in southern Ontario, supports those three pillars, Richens said.

“It’s a truly worthwhile project,” she said. “In addition to learning and maintaining food security discussions, it’s a great way to engage youth.”

Still, the operation is struggling.

A possible exit scenario includes moving part of the 14,000-litre water system and 100 tilapia fish to a vacant greenhouse at Huron Heights Secondary School in Newmarket.

Hope exists that benefactors will come to the rescue.

As a registered charity, the network issues tax receipts for donations. Stonehocker is open to negotiating naming rights with an appropriate, like-minded organization. Business patrons who support upStream with cash commitments or fundraising programs will receive valuable corporate citizenship-boosting promotional considerations.

“We know we can make upStream an urban agricultural innovation centre,” Stonehocker said. “We have no shortage of ideas; just a shortage of funds.”

HOW UPSTREAM AQUAPONICS WORKS In the closed-loop aquaponics system, water is continuously circulated from a fish tank housing hardy tilapia through a floating bed of greens. Nutrients from fish waste feed the plants and plants filter the water to keep fish healthy.

Education workers start provincewide job action today

More than 5,000 education workers in York Region will join a provincewide workto-rule campaign beginning this morning.

“It’s going to be difficult. We don’t want to go out on a full-blown strike. We always have the students’ concerns (in mind),” Elena Di

Nardo, president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 2331 in York Region, said.

The union represents 55,000 educational assistants, custodians, secretaries, library technicians, early childhood educators, student support workers and others across the province.

They are in a legal strike position today.

Di Nardo is more optimistic than she was late last month that a settlement can be reached after the provincial government agreed to additional bargaining dates, including today and tomorrow.

But she isn’t ruling out escalating job action.

“We’re hoping through these days of negotiations that we have centrally, we can come to an agreement without having to go, actually, on a full-blown strike,” she said.

“We could have escalating job action. We could step up work-to-rule. We could possibly go into a rotating strike or a full-blown strike, but we’re giving the opportunity to the ministry to come to an agreement with what we have on the table.”

As the work-to-rule campaign kicks off, students and parents should not feel any impact, Di Nardo said.

“We have to keep in mind students come first and the safety of students always comes first,” she said.

“It’s really not going to affect the students as much or the parents when we’re doing a work-to-rule, but it could be a completely different scenario if we go on a rotating strike or a full-blown strike, which is not where we want to go. We want to be able to get an agreement… Our goal is not to go on a fullblown strike. Our goal is to be there for the students and to come up with a fair, tentative agreement that will work best for everyone overall.”

During the first phase of the work-torule, education workers will refuse to work overtime, not come to school early or work late, decline participation in any voluntary activities, not take calls or emails from supervisors if they are home sick, refuse to perform duties of fellow union colleagues and “work at a safe pace”, Di Nardo said.

Although she would not comment on the union’s demands, she said education workers want to be treated as fairly as teachers.

“The school does not run alone by teachers. We all play a very important part and we always seem to be put on the back burner, education support workers,” she said.

Public high school teachers and Catholic secondary and elementary teachers reached agreements with the province last month.

However, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario is still negotiating with the province, York Region union president David Clegg said.

The union announced last month it was escalating its work-to-rule campaign.

Teachers will participate in extracurricular activities, but won’t take part in field trips and “meet the teacher” nights, collect money for school-related activities, participate in fundraising activities, email principals and viceprincipals outside work hours unless there is a safety concern and collect or distribute school or board paperwork to students.

Clegg isn’t optimistic there will be a quick resolution.

It is usually the artwork that captures the spotlight at the Georgina Arts Centre & Gallery, but it will be an afternoon with authors that claims that honour at the end of this month.

Local authors will be on hand for a meet and greet and book signings during the gallery’s fall open house Sept. 26, from 1 to 3 p.m.

A

ccompanied by a great deal of fanfare, several new changes for Ontario motorists came into effect last week.

Under the various components of Bill 31, also known as the Making Ontario’s Roads Safer Act, drivers found guilty of “dooring” — opening the car door suddenly and into the path of a passing vehicle or cyclist — could be hit with a fine of up to $1,000 and three demerit points, while failing to give cyclists at least one metre of space when passing will cost a driver $110 — $180 if the infraction occurred in a community safety zone — and two demerit points. Penalties for distracted driving also jumped to a set fine of $490 and three demerit points, although the cost can reach a maximum of $1,000, with novice drivers also receiving a 30-day licence suspension for the infraction.

Intended, as the legislation’s name suggests, to make the province’s roadways safer, the changes will hopefully achieve their desired aim of making travelling around the province a little less perilous for drivers and cyclists alike.

However, with the good came the bad in the form of higher vehicle registration and driver licencing fees that also came into force Sept. 1.

The release goes on to say the fee increases are to support the recommendations of the Commission on the Reform of Ontario’s Public Services to cover the rising costs of maintaining public roads, bridges, highways and other public services.

While some of the cash forked over for a driver’s licence renewal or plate sticker undoubtedly ends up funding pothole filler or bridge repairs, it’s by default rather than design.

The money collected through such fees isn’t dedicated to road repairs or transit improvements, meaning they could just as easily end up paying for health care administration rather than asphalt.

One also has to take into account the rate at which the vehicle licencing fees have increased.

Ten dollars may not seem all that steep, but the cost of that little plate sticker has jumped more than 46 per cent since 2011, when it was $74.

A 2013 Ministry of Transportation media release pointed out that prior to the fee increasing in 2012, from $74 to $82, the cost hadn’t moved for 15 years. Talk about The money collected making up for lost time.

We had local artisans, vendors, crafts and games. The new butter tart competition, hosted by St. James and St. George’s Church, was a huge hit.

Local businesses now have a powerful tool to connect them to shoppers who are planning to buy their products.

On behalf of Metroland Media and your community newspaper, Pulse Research has surveyed our readers and collected in-depth information about what shoppers are planning to buy in the next 12 months.

John Marling, founder of Pulse Research, described Pulse of Metroland as a prospecting tool that “gives the advertising department a direct barometer of the advertising needs of businesses. This tells you what your readers are going to buy and they’re going to be buying it locally.”

The purchasing intentions of Metroland readers were collected through a Pulse survey in July and compiled in August. And while Marling noted many surveys, such as federal election polls, pull data from a sampling of between 800 and 1,600 people, more than 4,300 of our readers completed the 40-minute online survey, providing an extremely reliable sampling.

The data gleaned from 4,356 respondents applies to 516 business categories “from plumbers to financial planners,” he said.

The results offer interesting details about Metroland readers: • 3.2 per cent plan to have laser eye surgery • 5.6 per cent say they will go to an audiology clinic • 10.5 per cent need an electrician • 16.9 per cent are planning to call a handyman

Police target distracted drivers

Josh Field was driving home from a doctor’s appointment when his phone rang.

The 17-year-old glanced over at it and swerved into oncoming traffic.

He over-corrected in the other direction, flipping his car and rolling a number of times before ending up in the ditch.

He managed to live long enough, after being pulled from the car using the jaws of life, for his mother to see him one last time.

Kathryn Field got a chance to hold his hand before he died.

She recounted this tragic story last Friday at an OPP press conference at the Hwy. 400 OnRoute service station in King Township to warn motorists against putting their own lives and those of others at risk by driving distracted.

“We are no longer the same people,” she said, explaining how distracted driving has affected her life. “We may look the same, but part of us is missing. We need to make this sort of thing socially unacceptable.”

Field spoke in the lead-up to the Labour Day weekend, which historically wracks up its share of road deaths, whether by inattentive or impaired driving.

On Tuesday, OPP released the results of their blitz, showing that collisions caused by distracted driving continue to rise in 2015, now up 20 per cent compared to last year.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said people are getting the message, but choosing to ignore.

“Distracted and aggressive driving are the No. 1 and 2 killers on our roads,” he said.

“Officers continue to see them both out there.”

Considering the number of drunk drivers has been largely falling over the past

few years, distracted driving is causing new headaches for police and motorists who are witnessing the effects of the trend daily, sometimes hourly.

So far this year, 41 people throughout Ontario have lost their lives and 6,600 drivers have been involved in crashes because of distracted driving.

The number of deaths has remained largely constant over the past three years, with 88 deaths in 2013.

However, Sgt. Schmidt said this number is only a fraction of those killed due to distracted driving, considering police need witnesses to see drivers on the phone prior to the crash for confirmation.

Although many might be frightened to share their own stories of distracted driving, Field said she began sharing her son’s story to help her cope with the pain of losing him.

“For us, it’s part of the healing process,” she told yorkregion.com. “After he died, we were numb, shocked — that doesn’t go away for a number of years. Being a proponent certainly helps it, but I don’t think I will ever get over it.”

While CAA’s Elliott Silverstein acknowledged everyone leads busy lives — that’s no excuse for the behaviour.

“We all lead hectic lives, but we can’t let our busy lifestyles stand in the way of child safety,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sgt. Schmidt recommended motorists make a similar contract with their children that he made with his daughter.

“When I get on the phone, my daughter calls me out and tells me, ‘That’s distracted driving, daddy’,” he said. “I always put the phone down. If it’s important enough, I pull over to where it’s safe before sending the message.”

The laughs take place at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts, 10268 Yonge St., Richmond Hill, Oct. 17, 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Waterfront parking enforcement comes under fire from visitor

Full lots and not a place to park is a common complaint levelled against some of the town’s more popular waterfront destinations.

But at least one recent day-tripper to Georgina called the town’s parking policies and enforcement a “cash grab on unsuspecting visitors to the area” after receiving a $50 parking ticket at Malone’s Wharf in Jackson’s Point.

Aurora resident Steve White says the town’s pay-and-display lot is confusing and, by not providing specific directions, is “nothing but a scam and a cash grab”.

The town, however, says the parking lot is posted sufficiently for enforcement of the pay-and-display requirement.

White says there was no indication of how much parking was, the hours the lot is enforced or specifically where the pay machine is because there is no machine in the Malone Wharf lot.

“We thought we were in the harbour parking lot,” he said.

But there are three locations where signs are posted, including the entrance to the wharf.

Each sign provides instruction with respect to the parking of vehicles.

In addition, parking rates and hours are on the pay-and-display machine, which patrons are directed to in order to purchase their parking pass.

White said being slapped with a $50 ticket at 5:45 p.m. on a Saturday is “ridiculous” and that the town is counting on people just paying rather than going through the process of having to appear in person to set a date for trial.

The town, however, said parking tickets

are issued for infractions with the intent that they will be paid.

If a person chooses to dispute the parking infraction notice, they have every opportunity to attend in person to file a court notice of intention to appear, as required by the Provincial Offences Act. If they do attend in person, a facilitator will attempt to resolve the matter prior to filing a court notice of intention to appear.

But with the summer season winding down, the town said all of Georgina’s payand-display lots have been successful when it comes to revenue and deterring illegal parking.

Revenue from the lots has “exceeded expectations” as of the middle of August.

While a number of measures are employed to deter illegal parking, including the visible presence of municipal law enforcement officers and parking ticket issuance, the payand-display machines have been very successful in deterring people from parking in the town’s parking lots without the required payment, according to the town.

Not so successful, however, has been the issue of full lots clogging Metro Road outside of De La Salle Park, as evidenced again this past long weekend, with cars stopped on the roadway waiting for a spot.

Good weather brings a higher demand for access to the waterfront, similar to Sibbald Point Provincial Park, according to the town’s recreation department, which agreed cars “parked” on a roadway could potentially cause a safety concern, while vehicles “stopped” on a roadway are primarily of concern with respect to traffic flow and congestion.

The town’s municipal law enforcement team works closely with York Regional Police and potential safety concerns would be addressed appropriately, it added.

New care model reviews mixed

A year-and-a-half after residents of seven seniors’ residences in York Region were surprised to learn the assisted living model of care in their homes was changing, reaction is mixed about whether the new plan is a success.

Some seniors say they miss the consistent, personalized attention on which they used to rely, while others say their new personal service workers have already become like family.

In the winter of 2014, residents of Heritage East in Newmarket, Keswick Gardens in Georgina, Hadley Grange in Aurora, Cedar Crest Manor in Markham, Armitage Gardens in Newmarket, Genesis Place in Richmond Hill and Kitchen-Breedon Manor in Schomberg discovered they would lose their on-site Alternative Community Living (ACL) offices as of April 1, 2014.

The change was due to a provincial policy that resulted in the Central Local Health Integration Network re-examining how the needs of high-risk seniors living at home are served.

Under the new model, Community and Home Assistance to Seniors (CHATS) and Care First would provide care.

Initially, there was to be a hub-and-spoke model (a centralized office operating around the clock that would dispatch PSWs who could be up to 15 minutes away) and a mix of scheduled and unscheduled visits.

Seniors were worried about the possible length of time for a response if they required immediate attention.

After some residents took their concerns to Queen’s Park, it was agreed the new model would continue to provide on-site, roundthe-clock care at all the residences.

That was a huge relief for residents, said Joe Pearson, a blind, double-leg amputee

with diabetes and cancer who requires kidney dialysis.

“That was the biggest concern we had.

They have stuck to that (providing 24/7 care)” said the Keswick Gardens resident, part of the group of seniors who went to the legislature.

However, Pearson has concerns with the new model.

“I remember (Premier) Kathleen Wynne stood up at Queen’s Park and said ‘They (residents) are going to get better service than they had before’ and frankly, I don’t see it.”

Pearson believes CHATS has not hired enough full-time staff and has relied too much on an outside agency to fill in the gaps.

That has left residents, who suffer from a variety of health issues up to palliative care needs, not knowing who their caregivers will be on an ongoing basis.

“It’s very frustrating because I have no idea who is going to come through (my) door,” he said.

The lack of continuity of care means new staff aren’t able to recognize changes in residents’ wellbeing and some vulnerable seniors aren’t able to tell them, he said.

“Before, the (ACL) ladies were right on everything,” he said, adding he misses the former model of care, which used to have new staff shadow veteran employees and get to know the needs of residents.

Bev Murray, 79, who also lives at Hadley Grange, said it was a difficult transition to lose the ACL workers with whom residents had become so close, but said she is forging strong relationships with the CHATS workers.

“I find them very good,” she said.

“I find their quality of care is what it should be.”

While Murray, has had good luck with her continuity of care, she has heard other residents say they have concerns with changing staff.

At Heritage East, 78-year-old Rena Ilott, who has inclusion-body myositis, a rare degenerative disease that causes weakness and wasting in her muscles, said there seems to be a “revolving door” of staff under the new model of care.

It is something RJ Gorman, as the owner of The GEM Theatre in Keswick, has been doing for years, not only to get the cheeks in the seats, but to give back to his community.

It is all part of anniversary celebrations at the GEM Theatre in conjunction with Jericho’s fourth annual fall family fun day Sept.

13.

The GEM will be playing free matinee movies at 1 and 3 p.m. in return for a dona-

tion of a non-perishable food item to the Georgina Community Food Pantry.

But it is also looking for cash donations to the United Way since it supports many programs and services for many people in need in our area.

“This is our opportunity to thank everyone in the community who has helped support our theatre over the past 18 years along with all the Jericho program participants,” Gorman said.

The event, featuring plenty of games, prizes and giveaways, begins at 11 a.m.

United Way of Toronto, York sets $100M fundraising target Dominik Kurek

he newly formed United Way of Toronto and York Region has an ambitious goal in its inaugural fundraising campaign, aiming to raise $100 million.

This funding will help support 220 partner agencies in 10 municipalities from Toronto in the south to Georgina in the north.

That goal will be met by the communities working together, said the 2015 campaign cabinet chair Mark Wiseman, president and CEO of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, before hundreds of guests at the CNIB Ontario building on Bayview Avenue in Toronto Sept. 1.

Guests included supporters and members of partner agencies from across York Region and Toronto.

“We truly are a united United Way across Toronto and York Region. That’s the first time we’ve been able to say that, and that’s fantastic,” Wiseman said.

The work of the United Way will include more than 25,000 volunteers in more than 760 workplaces across the city and York Region.

The United Way expects 164,000 donors for the 2015 campaign.

To help start this year’s fundraising campaign, Donald Guloien and Irene Boychuk, through the Guloien Family Challenge

Grant, are contributing $1.2 million to match dollar-for-dollar donations of $1,200 or more.

Toronto Mayor John Tory, a longtime supporter of the United Way and a 2001 campaign cabinet chair, congratulated the two agencies for merging into one.

“This is an era in which collaboration is going to mean more than anything else in terms of our ability to collectively get things done,” he said.

“This is how people live their lives. They don’t care if they’re on the TTC or York Regional Transit, they just care that they can find a way to get to work.”

He said the same is true when it comes to helping people.

Tory said Toronto relies greatly on the

United Way to help make a stronger city and urges people to dig into their pockets to contribute. He said this will help make an already good city, even better.

“What makes us different here and what people noticed when they came here for the Pan Am Games, no matter how the city looks, even the sort of wobbly antennas and things like that, they noticed most importantly how we lived here, that we respect each other, we look after each other, we care about each other. We don’t just say that. We actually do it,” Tory said.

“The centre of that, the fulcrum of that is the United Way.” President and CEO of the United Way Susan McIsaac agreed with the need for unity.

A recent article in McLean’s Magazine (Sept 14, 2015), suggests that “even if Canada (and Europe) threw their doors wide open (to these refugees), the only real solution is to end the conflicts that created this unprecedented flow of humanity. Sadly, there are few, if any reasons to be hopeful about that”.

Students of the Bible know that we can be hopeful! There is a solution to the conflicts and injustices of man’s rule! Jesus is returning, as he promised, to reign in righteousness and peace. The Lord God, who created this wonderful world, did not create it in vain. He is selecting from all nations a group of people who will help His son, Jesus, rule this planet justly. Today is our day of opportunity to acquaint ourselves with God’s revealed plan for this earth and choose to become an heir to His promises.

The Psalmist records: (Psalm 72): “He (Jesus) shall judge your people with righteousness; your afflicted ones with justice. ...He shall save the children of the needy and shall break in pieces the oppressor...All kings will bow down to him and all nations will serve him.”

Al Clay spoke from heart, with smile Heidi Riedner

lfred Joseph John Clay was the type of man who said what needed to be said — but always with a smile on his face and love in his heart.

A gentle giant in pint-size form with a ready smile, wise, kind eyes and wry humour that appreciated how crazy life could be sometimes, Al was the type of man who cherished most the times surrounded by family and laughter.

For 38 years, that included his wife, Christina, by his side and the many friends throughout his life he considered and welcomed as part of his own family.

“He always seemed to turn any gathering into a three-ring circus,” his eldest daughter, Karen Slaunwhite, said with pride and warmth.

“Dad always loved a good party.”

Whether through word or action, Al demonstrated leadership, wisdom, love and understanding.

It’s what made him a hero to his family, including son, David, and youngest daughter, Sandra Tout.

“He was one of the strongest men I know. He put up a good fight. Right to the end, he lived with dignity, determination, strength, love and humour,” Slaunwhite says, with the love only a daughter has for her daddy, no

matter what the age, but also with the strength of conviction.

He imparted those qualities on his children and grandchildren — Emma, Samantha, Brianna and Clay, who had the “coolest” Baba around.

“Family was everything to him and he unselfishly lived his life for us,” Slaunwhite says, adding her father welcomed his children’s spouses — Gail, Dave and Jeff — with open arms and treated them like they were his own, whether it was to praise them or give them heck about something.

“Dad would always say what needed to be said,” she says with a smile, a slight upturn of the eyebrow and direct gaze that would make her father proud — and giggle.

But those qualities also made him a cherished “dad” to an extended family that is left heartbroken after his death July 16, 2015 at the age of 80.

As the owner of Sandlyn Farms in Baldwin after a 34-year career with the Toronto Star, where he worked as the superintendent of the photo engraving department until his “retirement”, Al made everyone who stepped foot on the property feel like one of his own.

“Our dad taught us to compete hard, with fairness and intelligence,” says Slaunwhite. “Not only was he proud of Sandra’s riding

accomplishments, but he also loved to cheer on Emma, Brianna and any other member of our barn family in the show ring.”

He also welcomed anyone at his table. You’d actually be hard pressed to tally the actual amount of teas and good conversations shared at the Clay kitchen table.

And you couldn’t miss the affectionate and good-humoured twinkle in his eye and slow-spreading smile that lit up his face and the room when he was about to drop a joke or a wry comment with easy wit and genuine warmth and affection — followed by one of the best laugh’s around.

But there was also a tower of strength and rock centre of a family under that gentle giant, no matter what.

Even with his health failing during the past year, Al managed to haul around his horse trailer, never missing a horse show or even a riding lesson at the farm.

The “big guy” loved his family, friends, horses and tractor, touching all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

“Throughout our lives, our dad demonstrated by his actions how to behave. He led the way for us.

In our eyes, you will never meet a greater man.”

That, however, is precisely who Al Clay was, and remains in the hearts of so many people.

Age 29, Ellen passed away Thursday, August 27, 2015 following a tragic motor vehicle accident. Much loved daughter of Dianne Pappas (nee Keilty) and Stephen Chris Pappas. Ellen graduated with an Honours Degree in Criminology Criminal Justice from Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario. She loved to spend time in Gatineau Hills with her boyfriend Dan. Ellen was an avid Maple Leafs fan. She played hockey as a feisty center as a youngster and an adult. Also, an avid soccer fan and player, having played at high school and university levels including playing with the University of Leeds in England. Ellen’s most recent love was kayaking on the Mississippi River, a stone’s throw from her home in Carleton Place, Ontario. A heartfelt Thank You goes out to all friends and family for their support during this difficult time. Ellen gave a generous donation to the Gift Of Life.

Ellen’s wonderful spirit, joy and talents will be celebrated Sunday, September 20, 2015 at King Valley Golf Club, 15675 Dufferin Street, King City, Ontario from 2-6 p.m. Friends and family are invited to join in our remembrance of Ellen’s short but full life. After a prolonged battle with cardio vascular disease Douglas passed away peacefully with his family at his side at St. Michaels Hospital, on Saturday, August 29, 2015, in his 66th year.
