One man’s solitary run through Georgina last weekend helped raise funds for an entire community.

Looking sleek, determined and barely breaking a sweat in headto-toe black running gear, 76-yearold marathon man Hans Maier raised a few curious looks, many more encouraging cheers, but, most importantly, funds for a local church parish along his 100-kilometre trek along Hwy. 48 Saturday.

That’s because Hans was on the run again — and not from a challenge, but because of it.

“I love what I do and I do it as much as I can,” says Maier, who is No. 1 in the word in his age group in ultra marathon events, which cover distances 50 kilometres and longer.

Maier has been a competitor in the Ontario Ultra Series circuit since 1990, but he has run a variety of distances and competed in some of the most gruelling upper echelon events in the world since first lacing up to “run the roads” at the age of 39.

That includes the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence race in Ottawa — the longest running 24-hour race in the world, which Maier will run for the 24th time at the end of this month.

In the 2004 race, at the age of 65, Maier ran 162 km and was first in his category.

In the 2009 event, at the age of 70, Maier completed 120 km for another first in his age category.

He describes an incredible, colourful and long list of event accomplishments that would make most people weak in the knees as “interesting”, with wit as spry as his running legs.

That includes tackling the Midnight Sun Marathon held above the Arctic Circle a total of 16 times.

The most northerly marathon in the western hemisphere is widely considered one of the toughest on the planet.

The Boston Marathon, the John F. Kennedy 50 Miler through the Appalachian Mountains and the Panama Marathon’s 82-kilometre trek from the Atlantic to the Pacific across the Continental Divide, with temperatures still hovering at the

30 Celsius mark in the evenings, are also on the list — more than once.

While Maier runs for the challenge of setting and meeting personal goals, he shrugs off any accolades as easily as a warmup suit and laughs off any overachiever characterization.

“It’s not that at all,” he says in a good-natured, but matter-of-fact tone. “When I do something, I want to do it the best that I can and that involves pushing yourself, the right mindset, discipline and putting

aside the demons that come up.”

Those “demons” usually kick in at around 50 or 60 kilometres, he laughs.

“You learn to put them aside, overcome them and get past that threshold when you may want to give up, either in your mind or in your body. It is a part of what makes you who and what you are.”

But Maier also runs to raise money for those in need.

and Lake Simcoe cottager has run for the local Catholic parish, raising close to $40,000 for area churches.

A parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Beaverton for about a decade, he has always been a “dedicated supporter”, says parish secretary Sheila Landry.

He helped raise a roof for St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Virginia after a 70-km run two years ago, completed in seven hours and 49 minutes, raised more than $8,000.

And it only took 10 hours and 56 minutes to complete the 100-km trek from his home in Stouffville to Beaverton this past Saturday to raise money for repairs at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Maier says he runs to raise funds for his parish and events such as the Terry Fox Run when they “fall in between” his regular circuit.

“It is important to me. It raises a bit of consciousness about what is needed and maybe puts a little money toward it,” he says.

He also has no plans of slowing down any time soon.

He is gearing up for his 24th appearance at the 24-hour Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence race in Ottawa at the end of this month before closing out the year with two more 50Ks in southwestern Ontario and a final six-hour trail run in Waterloo.

“Longevity is part of my character,” he says, but that is more in reference to his marriage of 54 years to wife Brigitte — the anniversary of which is also this month.

You could also say longevity is stating the obvious, especially when you consider Maier is “up and running” every morning before 5 a.m., still puts in a full day at his plumbing business, runs 12 kilometres on weekdays and picks up the pace to do 30 on Saturdays, and manages to squeeze in a bagel and coffee with his wife at Tim Hortons and plenty of time with his two daughters and five grandchildren.

“You have to leave the space in your life for your people,” he says, whether that is family, friends, neighbours or church congregation. “An ‘I’, it’s all about me, attitude only gets you so far in life.”

For an ultra-marathoner at the top of his age group, with more than 100 events to his credit, in a pursuit that is the epitome of running solo, Maier runs for his community.

The T-shirts handed out for each of his charitable runs back that up.

They read “Hans is on the run again. I run. We pledge. Goal achieved.”

Liberal candidate opens third campaign office Saturday

Federal election candidate Shaun Tanaka is opening a third campaign office Saturday.

In addition to current offices in Queensville and Bradford, Tanaka’s community canvassing centre at 21 The Queensway S., Keswick will serve as a hub for residents who want to volunteer and become part of Tanaka’s campaign for the York-Simcoe riding.

“Opening in Keswick puts into action

our commitment to being an accessible and welcoming campaign,” Tanaka said.

Residents of Georgina and the riding of York-Simcoe are invited out to the launch at 10:30 a.m. for an official ribbon cutting.

The event comes on the heels of Tanaka’s official campaign launch, accompanied by Premier Kathleen Wynne, at Keswick’s Boston Pizza in July.

Tanaka grew up in Mount Albert and is raising her family in Sharon.

She has a doctorate from Queen’s University, currently sits on the sustainability board of the University of Toronto and has served in leadership positions with the Maytree Foundation and the National Association of Japanese Canadians.

Locally, Tanaka is a member of the East Gwillimbury Friends of the Library.

The riding’s current federal MP, Conservative Peter Van Loan, was first elected to the House of Commons in 2004 and re-elected in 2006, 2008 and 2011.

Keep eyes open on political scene

t may seem hard to believe, but it has been a month since the federal election was called.

No doubt, you’re probably starting to tire of all of the back and forth taking place in the media between the four major party leaders on a daily basis and the seemingly endless series of attack ads that have been flooding the airwaves during this extraordinarily long campaign period.

After all of that, no one would blame you for feeling a bit of fatigue with the political process, especially with nearly a monthand-a-half to go before voting day Oct. 19.

As difficult as it may seem, hang in there, because not only is it important for you to gather good information to make a decision ahead of next month’s federal election, it’s just as vital that you pay attention to what’s going on down at Queen’s Park as the provincial legislature resumes Sept. 14.

The federal campaign may be in the spotlight right now, but the Ontario government under Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne has some pretty significant business to deal with.

For starters, the government is expected to forge ahead with its controversial plan to sell off 60 per cent of Hydro One, which it hopes will yield $9 billion.

Of that figure, about $5 billion will go toward paying down Hydro One’s debt, leaving some $4 billion to fund the transportation and transit infrastructure the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, which includes York Region, badly needs.

The plan has generated plenty of criticism from opposition parties, pundits, citizens and other organizations.

Recently, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce issued a letter requesting assurances from the province that the partial sale of Hydro One won’t result in higher electricity prices or otherwise lead to new cost pressures for businesses.

In a responding letter, Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli sidestepped the question and outlined the role of the Ontario Energy Board and cited several programs the prov-

ince has introduced to help businesses lower their energy costs.

It’s not a very comforting response.

Also in the provincial government’s sights is the goal of establishing a new Ontario Retirement Pension Plan, which would require all workers and employers in the province whose workplaces don’t currently have a comparable defined benefit pension plan to pay into it to the tune of 1.9 per cent each (3.8 per cent combined) on an employee’s annual earnings up to $90,000.

While some groups have voiced support for action on the pension issue, others have expressed concern about the ability of employers and employees alike to afford it.

Today’s byelection in the Simcoe North riding, set in motion by the resignation of longtime Progressive Conservative MPP Garfield Dunlop, has been labelled by some pundits as a referendum on the two aforementioned plans, among others, proposed by the current Liberal government.

Regardless of the outcome of today’s vote, Ontarians should be keeping at least half an eye on Queen’s Park, even amidst this federal campaign, and be ready to contact their MPP in the event the province takes advantage of the fact so much attention is focused on the federal campaign and attempts to pass one of its more major, albeit controversial initiatives.

The last thing anyone should want to have happen is for a massive and potentially costly piece of policy to sneak through while everyone’s gaze was fixed elsewhere.

It may be trying for some to follow two levels of government at the same time, but just look at it like this: the provincial legislature will be off until mid-February in just three months and the federal scene will also be fairly low-key following the election.

BOTTOM LINE: Keep close eye on what is happening at Queen’s Park despite federal campaign/election.

York school board should follow Toronto’s lead Re: Transportation refusal jeopardizes autistic son’s therapy, mom says, Aug. 27: bit.ly/1Jvrf9V This situation would not occur at the Toronto District School Board and it should not be the case in Keswick.

York Region District School Board should be responsible for picking up a student and delivering him to school and taking him home or to the location of the parents’ choosing.

Students are entitled to those two trips each day of school.

The fact is that many students may be taken care of by a caregiver who may not be located in the family home.

The Toronto board does not require a student be picked up and returned to the identical location each way. Hence, a lot of students at the Toronto board are able to attend autistic therapy programs either in the morning or afternoon and either they are picked up or dropped off at the program location.

It is possibly a relevant issue if the location of therapy is far outside the school’s jurisdiction, but that is clearly not the case

There is no way the York board should refuse to provide the second transport of the day to a therapy centre, which is five minutes from the school. Just as relevant would be if a caregiver was expecting a student to be dropped at their home or an after-school program instead of returning to the same location they were picked up from.

My daughter attended a therapy program in the morning and would be picked up by her school bus at that location and taken to school. At the end of the day, she would be dropped off at home instead.

e’ve all become tied to our hand held devices, but for those who refuse to put them down while driving, the penalties have increased.

As of September 1, 2015 many charges under the Highway Traffic Act have been amended to include more severe fines along with some that now include demerit points.

A primary focus of these amendments is the H a n d - H e l d Communication Device charge for distracted driving. This offence will now carry three demerit points if convicted, along with a minimum fine of $300 and up to $1000.

The most drastic amendment is for novice drivers (a driver carrying a G1, G2, M1,

M2). If convicted of an offence using a HandHeld communication device or Entertainment Device, it has been added to the novice driver’s escalating sanctions to include a licence suspension of 30 days upon the first conviction, 90 days upon the second, and possible licence cancellation upon the third.

Confirming your bluetooth / handsfree device is working before entering the highway/roadway is a sure way to prevent you from handling it while driving.

Further actions have been taken to give cyclists peace of mind.

The law as of September 1, 2015 states, “every person in charge of a motor vehicle who is overtaking a person on a bicycle shall, as nearly may be practicable, leave a distance of not less than one metre between the bicycle and the motor vehicle and shall maintain that distance until safely past the bicycle.”

This being said, you must leave that

minimum one metre gap from the extreme left side of the cyclist to obey the law.

By now, the majority of drivers are familiar with the slow down and move over rule, upon approaching a stopped emergency vehicle with flashing lights. This law has taken a further step to protect the safety of persons operating tow trucks. Upon the approach of a tow truck that is on a service call while illuminating its amber lights, you are required to give it the same respect with regard to the law as you would for an emergency vehicle.

Lastly, with regards to accidents occurring from opening vehicle doors without due regard for other vehicles or persons, the fines have been amended to a minimum of $300 and a maximum of $1000.

Resident hopes her haircut will raise $2K for cancer research

What took three years to grow out will take only seconds — and hopefully $2,000 — for a Georgina resident to cut off for cancer this month.

Pefferlaw resident and CIBC employee Christie Gray hopes to raise $2,000 in donations by Sept. 18 as part of the CIBC’s Run for the Cure event, which raises money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

The 31-year-old financial services representatives at the Pefferlaw branch has pledged to cut at least 12 inches of her shiny brown locks to donate to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths campaign, which makes wigs for cancer patients.

And Gray has already raised about $1,400 of her target.

But this isn’t the first time Gray has put her locks on the line and under the shears for the cause.

Three years ago, Gray surpassed her $500 donation target, garnering $1,700 from corporate and community support to cut and donate her locks to make wigs for cancer patients who have lost their own hair to chemo and radiation therapies.

“I’ve been growing out my chin-length bob ever since to do it again,” Gray said, adding, this time, she’ll most likely end up with a pixie style rather than a bob after making the cut.

And those honours go to Gray’s longtime hair stylist, Dan Sanek of Holland Landing’s Hair’s To U.

Sanek will make the cut for cancer at the Pefferlaw branch of the CIBC Sept. 14.

Gray said her hair is a small sacrifice to make toward the fight against cancer, which is something that touches the lives of so many people and, sadly, sometimes irrevocably.

“My hair will grow back and if it helps make a difference, makes someone feel good and helps lead to an eventual cure, it is something I can do and some small way I can contribute to the cause,” she added.

When you’re facing cancer and the challenges that come with it, it can be difficult to adjust to changes such as hair loss.

The Canadian Cancer Society helps women living with cancer find wigs when they lose their hair as a result of cancer treatment.

And it can take anywhere from eight to 30 ponytails to make one hair piece.

Since 2007, through the foundation’s partnership with Proctor & Gamble Canada and the launch of the Pantene Beautiful Lengths campaign, more than 40,000 ponytails have been donated and 1,900 wigs have been created, donated and distributed to women across Canada.

Many of the women helped say that putting on a wig makes them feel like themselves again.

By donating her hair to the cause, Gray hopes to help make that happen for many more cancer survivors.

sure sign summer is almost over is the pre-budget council meeting set for Sept. 16.

During this meeting, council members can bring ideas and suggestions forward for discussion. In the past, those ideas often waited until budget day, when they were debated and often without all the financial costs and impacts available.

With this new approach, council can decide which ideas to refer to staff for a more complete financial review and inclusion in the draft budget. On budget day, they can then be part of the full budget discussion on whether or not to proceed with them.

We are also offering the same opportu-

nity to residents.

We want your ideas before the draft budget is created so that, as with our ideas, they, too, can be discussed and perhaps referred to staff for more review. There will be several opportunities starting again in mid-September.

Council will also be in closer discussions with staff before the draft budget on what the priorities are for 2016. This will assist in making budget day more productive.

The draft budget is planned to be released Nov. 11 at an evening meeting.

Budget day itself will be Nov. 24 and 25, if required, with final adoption set for Dec. 16.

Budget days in the past were well into February or March.

By moving the dates forward, it allows us to have the 2016 budget approved for the beginning of the year. Knowing each department’s budget from the start of the year makes more financial sense. It also makes more sense to have staff get started earlier on the reports and tenders for all the various projects that we approve.

Organizers with this year’s Terry Fox Run in Georgina hope people will dig deep and support the Marathon of Hope in its quest to outrun cancer.

Event organizer Laurie Pangman-Carriere appreciates the value of a dollar, as well as people’s time, but hopes the man whose courage and cross-country run across a nation set the tone for future fundraisers will not be lost in the crowd of other worthy causes — all appealing for the same charitable dime.

“I know it’s hard, but we always need volunteers and, to be brutally honest, we need donations. It’s that simple. I recognize that there is an incredible amount of worthy charities that continually ask for everyone’s support and the Terry Fox Run is amongst them. I know that we can’t donate to every charity, no matter how worthy. I know that time is also precious. But I also know in my heart of hearts that without the Terry Fox Run and its associated events, it is unlikely that such amazing progress and advancements would have been made in research and treatments during the past three decades.”

While “Terry’s cancer” remains rare – 189 Canadian cases were diagnosed and 45 deaths recorded between 2003 and 2007, according to the most current statistics available — the prognosis is dramatically different now than in 1977.

Growing up in a time when cancer was rarely mentioned and only whispered with fear, PangmanCarriere says a cancer diagnosis in the early 1980s was a death sentence for most, with little to no hope.

“That was the case with my dad and many others I am honoured to have known.”

She can’t help but get emotional when she describes the man, whose journey 35 years ago, inspired a nation.

She is also deeply touched by the many people who support, participate, donate, volunteer and celebrate the Terry Fox Run in his memory.

“By doing so, they fight cancer for their loved ones, honour those who have passed and celebrate those who have won their battles with cancer,” she said.

Her hope is for Terry’s legacy to continue and his pioneering spirit to be remembered through the annual run’s continued success.

“I sincerely want Terry to remain a Canadian hero for generations to come. That will keep his dream alive to share with all. I sincerely believe we can outrun cancer when we work together.”

More than $500,000 has been raised in Georgina since its first event in 1983.

PREVENTING FROZEN PIPES BEFORE WINTER ARRIVES Like many municipalities across Ontario that endured extended frigid temperatures this winter, several homes in Georgina experienced frozen pipes.

Having frozen pipes is both a headache and an inconvenience, and has the potential to lead to a pipe burst that may cause water damage in your home.

Each household is allowed one free garbage bag/item for collection every other week. If tagged, a maximum of four additional bags/items are permitted for collection.

Waterfront & Safety tips for closing the cottage for winter As the air becomes crisp and leaves fall to the ground, there are several things for cottagers to remember when closing up for the winter season.

To ensure a smoother, safer start-up when re-opening come spring, Hydro One has some important things to check off your list this fall.

• Turn off all major appliances, your water heater, and electrical room heaters before you turn off the main switch.

If you decide to leave your electricity on to operate a security system or lighting, you should: • Turn off the power supply to

your major appliances at the main panel.

• Turn off the power supply to any space heaters. Otherwise, they may turn on during cold weather.

Here are some other helpful tips to follow before locking up for the season: • Drain the plumbing system to prevent your pipes from freezing and bursting.

• Drain your water tank. Remember to turn off the power supply to the water heater before draining the tank to avoid damage to the heating element.

• Clean out the fridge and leave the door ajar to keep it smell-

ing fresh.

• Make sure your fireplace damper is shut tightly to prevent animals from getting in.

If you are trimming tree branches, don’t come close to or touch power lines yourself or with equipment. Touching or even going near a hydro wire with equipment could cause serious injury or death. Even touching the equipment that contacts a line could be tragically harmful.

Also make sure that branches won’t fall onto a lower power line. Tree contact with power lines accounts for 30 per cent of power outages in Ontario.

They may be separated by a few decades in age.

Yet Sady Beelik and Bob Pigott share some common ground.

Beelik, 18, and the 71-year-old Pigott captured club championships last month at The Briar’s Golf Club in Jackson’s Point.

Beelik, who earned exemption into the women’s open division by wining the club’s junior title last year for the third time, finished the tournament with a bogey on the par-4 18th hole to hang on for a one-stroke victory in the 36-hole women’s tournament.

“I was going up the fairway and thinking about the balcony overlooking the green,”

recalled the 18-year-old who is entering Georgian College this month to study golf course management. “I was shaking and thinking, ‘It’s just a little club championship.’ But I was proud of myself. Maybe all my practising is showing now.”

Pigott also carded a one-stroke victory to win the men’s open crown for the 15th time, although his first since 2005.

“It was petty unexpected at my age to win it again,” said Pigott, who shot rounds of 75-75-73 to win. “But I played pretty well.

I just wasn’t expecting to win again after all those years.”

He has also won three junior titles and nine senior (plus-55 years) crowns during his 62 years as a member at The Briar’s.

Our Sun is the central star of our solar system and the closest star to our earth. God created the Sun a perfect distance from our earth in order that life could be sustained comfortably, showing us His love for us. If the Sun was closer to us, we would burn up and if further away, we would freeze.

The earth’s orbit varies between 91 million miles to 94.5 million miles from the Sun. Light from the Sun takes 8 minutes to reach us, travelling at 186,000 miles per second, but takes 40 minutes to reach Jupiter.

The core temperature of the Sun is 27 million degrees F, or 15 million degrees C, and yet only 0.2 % of the Sun’s heat actually reaches earth. The Sun is mostly ionized gas: 92.1% hydrogen and 7.8% helium. One million earths could fit into the Sun.

Always the life of the party, Lance’s wishes were that a party be held in his memory. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, September 12th, 2015, from 1:00pm - 4:00pm for all friends and family to enjoy one last party with Lance and say their goodbyes.
