The $680,000 construction contract will see the completion of the trunk sewer below the existing sanitary sewer, service connections and a concrete box culvert.

The project, originally recommended and approved in the 2014 budget, will allow

the town to take the Glenwoods pumping station offline, thereby reducing perpetual maintenance costs of running the station, according to the operations and engineering department.

Asphalt resurfacing of the full width of Lowndes, north of Glenwoods Avenue to the limit of the new subdivision (Tim Jacobs Trail) was also included in the contract.

The total approved budget for the sewer work is $1,580,000, which includes engineering consultant fees for contract administration and full-time inspection services.

The substances involved were sent to Health Canada for analysis.

f you’re planning to buy a house in the Greater Toronto Area, be prepared to go to war.

As demand in the local housing market increases substantially on an almost monthly basis, so, too, does the number of bidding wars.

Graham Jones, a Re/Max Hallmark agent who has worked in the industry for 25 years, just sold a house in a bidding war that netted his clients a substantial profit.

Their Richmond Hill bungalow was listed for $899,000. There were nine bidders and the property sold for $1.43 million.

He compares the sale to “winning the lottery” for his clients.

“It was underpriced a little bit to set up the bidding war, but still, it set records all over the place,” Jones said.

“We had three bidders that were just beating the living daylights out of each other. We didn’t know where they were going to stop. It’s a nice home, but it’s a 65-year-old, 900-square-foot bungalow on a 50-foot lot. They (sellers) are so happy. I can’t even begin to tell you. They’re retiring and going to buy a piece of property up north and build a house. They got way more money in their pocket than they expected.

They’re absolutely thrilled. Every deal I’ve done in the past two years has been multiple offers.”

It seems this story is becoming commonplace.

The Toronto Real Estate Board reported a 12.6-percent increase in home selling prices in April, when

compared to the same period last year. The average home sold for $766,472 in Toronto in April, compared to $690,658 in April 2015. Throughout the rest of the GTA, average prices also increased from $605,336 in April 2015 to $724,235 this year.

The increase is blamed on several factors. Interests rates are at or near record lows, the Canadian dollar lags behind other world currencies and, historically, GTA real estate is a relatively safe investment gamble.

“Our real estate, in world dollars, is still much cheaper than in Washington or London,” Mark Weisleder, a partner in Vaughan’s RealEstateLawyers. ca LLP firm, said. “Even if it’s increased, it’s a good investment for foreigners.”

Immigration does play a role in driving the market upward. The Ontario government estimates about 100,000 immigrants move into the province each year.

Many of those people settle in the GTA. Between Aurora in York Region and Innisfil in Simcoe County, there appears to be an influx of Chinese buyers.

“If you look at the number of housing starts compared to population growth, we’re just not building homes fast enough,” Joe Asensio, of JN Asensio Realty Inc., said.

McCarthy, 75, jumps out of plane to celebrate birthday

Carol McCarthy will celebrate her 75th birthday by jumping out of an airplane for a million dollar smile.

A personal adventure that will take roughly three minutes has parachute support all over the GTA and will bring a different kind of adventure to children deprived of playing in public parks due to illness.

McCarthy is dedicating her tandem jump and time to raising donations for the children’s charity Million Dollar Smiles (MDS), a non-profit organization that builds playgrounds for children navigating life-threatening illnesses and medical treatments.

The MDS summer playground build program brings some normalcy to a child experiencing life-threatening illness or going through cancer treatments whose weakened immune system makes playing on public playgrounds near impossible for fear of infection or complication.

Through fundraising campaigns and sponsorships, volunteers with the organiza-

“I would like to raise enough to cover the cost of one or two playgrounds,” McCarthy said.

The Sandy Cove Acres resident has full support from her brother, Carmen, who lives in Jackson’s Point.

The Georgina family will be hosting a garage sale June 18, including a barbecue to help raise money for the cause.

“She’s really putting her whole life and love into this thing,” Carmen said, adding with a laugh — and obvious love and admiration — “she must be losing her mind or something to want to jump out of an airplane”.

“She’s a keeper, anyways,” he added.

His sister’s jump is also in memory of his grandson, Daniel “Danny” McCarthy, who died at the age of 14 after a courageous battle with leukemia.

Diagnosed at the age of three, the 14-yearold Pickering boy bravely worked and walked his way through illness and chemotherapy to raise more than $50,000 for leukemia research.

“That young man made me a better person and he changed the world in his short life,” Carmen said, adding when Danny was too sick to actually walk on his own in annual runs, his father carried him on his shoulders so he could still participate.

To date, a jewelry sale and 8-ball pool tournament have taken place in Sandy Cove to raise funds for the cause.

Skydive Toronto in Innisfil also donated the $300 cost of Carol’s jump, which she

added to the kitty.

And her brother hopes the support of the community in Georgina will help the June 18 garage sale in Jackson’s Point top up the funds already raised.

“Who would spend $300 to jump out of an airplane is beyond me,” Carmen said with a laugh, adding he’s really not surprised it will be his sister, whose heart is as big when it comes to compassion as it is courage.

“She did the CN Tower’s Skywalk a few years ago, so none of us are really surprised she’s throwing herself out of airplane,” he added.

Almost $2,700 has been raised so far, which is just about enough to cover one backyard playground.

“For a 75-year-old chick, she’s not too doing too bad,” Carmen said, as only older brothers can.

“I hope my skydive and fundraising events can bring joy to a deserving child and add to Danny’s legacy,” Carol added The June 18 garage sale begins at 8 a.m. at 27 Allen Dr., which is off Dalton Road, across from the York EMS station.

Gossip can often titillate, but who knew Sutton’s actual history could be so interesting?

Your next opportunity to find out why takes place during a historic walk along downtown Sutton this Saturday.

The Georgina Historical Society will guide you through the history of the buildings and personalties that founded and pioneered the progress of the original settlement known as Bourchier’s Mills into what is now Sutton’s downtown core.

The free historic walk is part of a roster of events marking Sutton/Jackson’s Point 125 Celebration, which culminates with a grand showcase celebration Sept. 10 and 11.

The settlement of Sutton and Jackson’s Point began in 1818 when the land was granted to 27-year-old William Bourchier.

After an unsuccessful first attempt petitioning the Government of Upper Canada for land in the province due to “administrative technicalities”, Commander William Bourchier of the Royal Navy was granted permission to proceed to Canada as a settler and awarded 1,200 acres in 1818.

Only a portion (520 acres) of this 1,200 acres was immediately taken up at Georgina, which is the present-day area of Sutton and Jackson’s Point.

Some evidence suggests that William resided at the point, as an area diarist refers to visiting “C.B.” (Captain Bourchier) at Bourchier’s Point, or Captain’s Point, in 1821, according to Melissa Matt of Georgina Pioneer Village & Archives.

William’s younger brother, James O’Brien Bourchier, applied for land in 1819 and received 200 acres at present-day Sibbald’s Point.

He was only 21 years old at the time.

William, however, did not stay long in Upper Canada, according to the archives.

By 1822, he had acquired additional patents for land in Georgina Township, only to immediately sell them to his brother before leaving Upper Canada to return to England.

By the summer of 1830, James had cleared and cultivated 30 acres and had a wife and three children.

When James eventually got around to paying fees for his property, although at a reduced rate due to the money already expended in improving the community, James spent £1,000 in making improvements to the settlement that had sprung up at his

land at present-day Sutton.

In those 11 years in Upper Canada, the construction of a grist mill, saw mill and dry goods store with a post office, the latter of which was in existence as early as 1831 (though some evidence suggests earlier) with James as Post Master, had taken place.

Within three decades, James had subdivided his property and sold village lots for residences and businesses, Matt explained, adding the village boasted churches, schools, taverns, a tannery, woolen mill, blacksmith, shoemakers and other merchants and tradesmen necessary to the Upper Canadian settler.

The Ontario Liberals’ plan, released yesterday, puts forward various measures, including means of encouraging motorists to transition from fossil fuelpowered vehicles to electric ones and subsidies for home charging.

Increasing the availability of lower-carbon fuel — such as natural gas and propane — to entice truck drivers away from diesel and ensuring that all new homes are carbon neutral by 2030 are also among key components in the strategy.

Recently, some opposition MPPs had stoked fears the plan would ban the use of natural gas for home heating and though the document proposes no such measure, it does include incentives for those who switch to alternative energy sources.

According to a story by Keith Leslie of the Canadian Press, the plan envisions spending up to $8.3 billion over the next five years to help counter climate change, with much of the funding expected to come from the $1.9 billion the province hopes to raise annually through the auction of emission credits once it joins a cap-and-trade market

Environment and Climate Change Minister Glen Murray told CP the plan will hike home heating bills by about $5 per month and add 4.3 cents per litre to the price of gas.

The overall goal is to bring down the province’s emissions by 15 per cent of 1990 levels by 2020 and, ultimately, slash them by 80 per cent by 2050.

And while it’s good to see the government taking climate change seriously, the rollout of the plan needs to be handled carefully.

It’s great to provide incentives to reduce one’s carbon footprint, but not everyone can afford to take advantage of them and fork out the upfront bill for retro-fitting their home or purchasing an electric car —especially if they’re pummelled with additional costs in the interim.

Generally speaking, we all want to do our part in the fight against climate change and have our homes and vehicles operate as efficiently as possible.

Let’s make sure we don’t unfairly punish those who may struggle to afford the initial investment needed to take the next step.

We’re in this together.

Let’s avoid leaving anyone behind.

We’re baby boomers, but we’re not selling our home

ur local newspapers have been publishing the stories for years now and the headlines all start to sound the same: “Record sales in May keep housing market hopping” (way back in June 2007); “Housing market stays hot” (Nov. 2011); “House values highest in GTA: MPAC” (July 2012); “House values continue to rise” (July 2012).

I could go on, but you get the general idea.

Those headlines about prices climbing and our hot housing market are interspersed with headlines like these: “Housing supply fails to meet needs” (May 2012) or “Housing tops seniors’ worries” (May 2013).

We know this issue is touching a chord with you, from letters to the editor and social media conversations — and plain old over-the-back-fence discussions going on in every community.

Take my own street in Richmond Hill — a microcosm of the housing market. On any given week, there are several homes up for sale or lease — and yes, some bear the “sold over asking” words on the signs.

The home directly beside my home was sold by longtime neighbours in December 2014 and a family lived there for about a year. Then they were gone and, apparently the house was advertised again for sale online, yet no traditional realtor sign was seen.

The house has been empty for months now. I mow the dandelion-filled grass just so it doesn’t make our adjoining front yard look bad.

Marney Beck overgrown and prospective families troop in and out of the home on weekends taking a look, I presume.

Another neighbour across the street had contractors working on her home and speculation ran rampant — is she moving? Renting? Or maybe just renovating? And I’m getting those calls, too.

I answer our home phone and hear: “Hello, are you interested in selling your house?”

No introductory “How do you do, I’m so and so...” just straight to the point: “You selling”? “No” is our answer. And here are some reasons why.

My husband and I love our home, the short walk to the theatre, grocery and drug stores, parks and other amenities, and while incredible selling prices of other homes on our street give us pause for thought, we’re not ready to move for many years yet.

Yes, we’re Baby Boomers, and yes we’re staying in our homes as long as we can handle the stairs and the yard work.

My husband has had more than his share of health challenges and depends on and greatly appreciates his doctors in our community — and our hospital.

We hear stories about people moving to other places in Ontario having trouble finding a doctor — even a family doctor.

That’s one good reason we’re staying put.

Another is our 24-year-old son.

Although he has a full-time job, there’s no way he could afford an apartment in Richmond Hill with the high rents, much less enter the crazy housing market — even sharing a home purchase with friends.

So, hot housing market or not, we’re not selling.

Lyme Disease FIGHT THE BITE!

What is Lyme disease?

Lyme disease is an illness caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria that is spread through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick (deer tick). Lyme disease does not spread from human to human.

What are the symptoms?

A circular rash referred to as a bull’s-eye rash could be one of the earliest symptoms of an infection. If you develop a bull’s-eye rash, fever, chills or extreme fatigue or feel like you have the flu, see your health care provider.

Be sure to tell them if you have been active outdoors. If left untreated, Lyme disease could lead to more serious symptoms affecting the central nervous system, brain or heart.

Treating Lyme disease Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics. Getting treatment in the early stages of the disease is critical for full recovery.

What are ticks?

Health will continue to conduct tick dragging at various locations across York Region’s nine towns and cities.

While the risk is low, it is possible to be infected with Lyme disease from the bite of a blacklegged tick almost anywhere in Ontario.

Other established blacklegged tick populations and Lyme disease endemic areas include parts of British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Northeast and upper Midwest United States and central Europe.

Protect yourself and your family It is important to protect yourself each time you are in a wooded or brushy area. Follow these simple tips to protect yourself: • Wear long pants and long-sleeved tops that are light-coloured to help spot ticks • Tuck your pants into your socks • Use an insect repellent containing DEET and apply according to manufacturer’s directions • Search your body for ticks

Ticks are small bugs, the size of a sesame seed, which feed off the blood of animals and humans. They are generally active through the spring, summer and fall. They can be found on tall grasses and bushes and can attach themselves to people or animals. Ticks do not fly and move slowly. Most tick bites are painless. Ticks feed slowly and will attach themselves for 24 to 72 hours.

They are most likely to spread infection after being attached for 24 hours or more. Not all ticks are infected with the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, therefore, not all tick bites will spread Lyme disease.

• Pay special attention to the groin, scalp, underarms and back

Where are blacklegged ticks found?

• Place the tick in a moistened paper towel and put in a screw-top container such as a plastic pill bottle or a plastic sealable baggie

The risk of Lyme disease is usually much greater in tick endemic areas because the probability of bites from infected ticks is much greater.

In Ontario, blacklegged ticks are more commonly found in areas along the north shores of Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.

• Store the container in a refrigerator or freezer until the tick can be submitted to your local health unit for testing • Call York Region Health Connection at 1-800-361-5653

Keswick teenager Jason Harper’s smile was worth a thousand words — and the medal and paper to go with it — after he was one of 42 students across the country to receive a scholarship awarded by the Diabetes Hope Foundation last month.

The DHF Contitech Scholarship program was established to recognize youth in the community who have excelled in their academic achievements, demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and volunteerism in the community, and possess exemplary diabetes self­-management practices.

Harper was chosen for consistently demonstrating all of those attributes and for not letting diabetes stand in the way of working diligently to achieve his goals.

In addition to volunteering in his community, Harper was chosen for excelling in all his studies, being an honour roll student and the recipient of numerous academic awards.

Harper, as well as all the students chosen, outlined the challenges and triumphs they experience through their personal stories in their entry essays.

Harper will be entering post-­secondary studies in the fall in hopes of becoming a teacher.

DHF’s flagship, the scholarship program, has awarded 590 scholarships since its inception 18 years ago and has evolved to include a mentorship element leveraging the experiences of past scholarship recipients to help other young adults navigate the complexities and challenges of embarking on post-secondary education while living with diabetes.

“We’re grateful to our generous donors and dedicated volunteers who help us propel even more young people with diabetes toward post­-secondary education and reaching their full potential,” said Barbara Pasternak, founder of Diabetes Hope Foundation.

“Congratulations to this year’s scholarship recipients and thank you to the fabulous alumni who ‘pay it forward’ by mentoring the next generation so they are ready to be tomorrow’s leaders.”

The unique scholarship awards program recognizes what no other program does — that young people living with diabetes must have an unwavering commitment to managing their health.

It recognizes that once an adolescent reaches the age of 18, they are transitioning from pediatric care to a more self­-directed adult health care program.

Diabetes Hope Foundation created its flagship scholarship program to encourage young adults with diabetes to continue their education and to provide financial and peer-

No one has to remind the San Jose Sharks about how difficult it is to reach a Stanley Cup final. It took them 25 years, after all.

In his first full season in the National Hockey League, Chris Tierney is in no position to dispute that notion, especially in a dressing room where teammates such as Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski have spent entire careers just trying to get to the final.

Lucky? Perhaps. Still, the end game at whatever level he is playing at has become something of a regular occurrence for the Keswick resident.

During his Ontario Hockey League career as a member of the London Knights, Tierney was part of three Memorial Cup teams. It isn’t quite the same, but there are similarities.

“It’s obviously cool to be in the Stanley Cup final,” said Tierney, from Pittsburgh before Wednesday’s off-day practice. “It’s what you dream of as a kid and work to be part of.

“It’s been a lot of fun. Once you get there, you want to take advantage of it because you never know when you’ll get back, so to be in a Stanley Cup final early in my career is something special.”

Now in his first full season with the Sharks, Tierney is calling on those Memorial Cup experiences perhaps to help get through the

three games to one deficit the Sharks now face against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“It’s kind of the same, but it’s not that onegame format,” said the six-foot, 195-pound centre, who had seven goals among 20 points for the Sharks in 79 regular season games and nine more, including five goals, in 22 playoff games. He has two assists in the first four games of the final series.

“Here you have the opportunity to fix mistakes over a few days. It’s obviously good to have that big-game experience of the Memorial Cup and it’s the end goal at the end of the season to be on the biggest stage at the time.”

The Sharks path to the final includes series wins over Los Angeles Kings, Nashville Predators and the St. Louis Blues in the West Conference final.

“With the parity of the league now, it is difficult to win when you get into the playoffs,” said Tierney, a second-round pick for the Sharks in the 2012 draft. “A hot goalie, scoring slumps. Everything has to line up. It’s tough.”

The trick now for the Sharks is to get back into the series with a win Thursday night in Pittsburgh. That would get the Sharks back in front of their rabid and loud hometown fans.

“It’s known to be a good fan base,” said Tierney. “I think when you get deep into the playoffs, the fans get into it more. It’s loud. It’s very cool to be part of the experience.”

Establish price margins before putting in an offer on a home. “You can’t get emotional. Leave the emotion at home. You need to feel good about this win, not think, ‘I got this house, but at what price?” Joe Asensio, of JN Asensio Realty Inc., says.

GET A HOME INSPECTION This will allow you to feel more comfortable with simplified purchase conditions. Mini inspections have become more popular in the GTA as the housing market heats up. An inspector will check mechanical systems, structure, dampness and the “bones” of the house.

CHEQUE IN HAND If you like the property, make sure the seller knows you’re serious. “If 10 people show up, one guy has a cheque and nine don’t, he may not have the best offer, but he’s a sure deal,” Asensio says.

DON’T LIVE FOR YOUR MORTGAGE Make sure the house doesn’t cost you a social life. It’s important to be able to spend a night on the town every once in awhile. If necessary, look north into smaller markets, such as Simcoe County.

‘We’re just not building enough homes’ From page 3

“They can move their family here while still finding affordable housing,” Royal LePage sales representative Wasim Jarrah, who works out of an office in Aurora, said. “Chinese buyers are savvy. They like to negotiate and feel like they’ve got a good deal.

It’s the same thing that happened to Markham, and for the Italians in Vaughan. It’s a very healthy real estate market. Even when people are purchasing in multiple offers, they’ll realize a profit if they stay in their properties for up to three years. The (current) sellers are making a sizable profit as well.”

There’s also a significant lack of inventory — a combination of slowly progressing new construction sites and an apparent unwillingness by aging Baby Boomers to sell their homes and downsize.

“If you look at the number of housing starts compared to population growth, we’re just not building homes fast enough,” Joe Asensio, of the Brampton-based JN Asensio Realty, said.

“You see homes going up everywhere, but they’re all sold before they even build them. I’m on the tail end of the Baby Boomers; this will sound terrible, but we’re just not dying fast enough. People need somewhere to live; there just isn’t enough affordable housing available. This trend will continue for a long while. The real estate market is going to stay nuts for a long time yet. I don’t know whether there’s a need to slow it down.”

Asensio is involved in multiple-offer scenarios daily. He watched 51 offers roll in for a property in Brampton recently and admits the number of bids on homes in the area will often enter double digits.

Jones agrees with these assessments that Asian buyers, low interest rates and short supply have driven the housing market. However, some sectors are in higher demand than others. For example, townhouses and condominiums are not generally seeing the same percentage increases in value as freehold homes.

“People don’t have a lot of options,” Jones said. “It’s impossible to tell whether it’s foreign or domestic money, but there’s certainly a lot of Asian buyers who are desperately trying to get freehold properties in the GTA. Condos and townhouses still sell, and you might even get the occasional bidding war, but it’s two offers or three. Condos have gone up, but it’s not what’s driving the market.”

Prime market conditions are leading to high demand for houses.

Jarrah says any York Region property, for example, currently listed at an appropriate market value, will likely fetch $50,000 to $100,000 more than asking price, if there’s an offer presentation date attached. That date is key because it forces all potential buyers to make blind bids on the property.

“It creates an atmosphere of competitiveness,” Jarrah said.

“We had three bidders that were just beating the living daylights out of each other. We didn’t know where they were going to stop.”

The annual flower of 2016: the begonia The National Garden Bureau (www.ngb.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to im­pro­ving quality of life through plants, has proc­laimed the begonia as the annual of the year for 2016. Of course, that isn’t surprising when you consider that the be­gonia family in­cludes more than 1,700 spe­cies and nearly 15,000 hybrids and cultivars.

Although they are commonly used as interior houseplants, garden begonias are grown as annuals with stunning blooms throughout the season.

In the shade or in full sun, it doesn’t matter — begonias are happy everywhere. What’s more, they have no equal when it comes to creating a colourful border or brightening up flower beds, and they’re perfect for cre­a­ting decorative containers for the deck or front doorstep.

Garden centres stock a wide variety of tu­berous and fibrous rooted begonias, which are the most common species in gardens. Elegant and delicate, begonias are available in different colours; sometimes bright, sometimes pastel but always eye-catching. Begonia foliage is also very attractive, with its fleshy, compact and sometimesasymmetric leaves.

Garden begonias are grown as annuals and give stunning blooms throughout the season.

Soil that is moist, rich, light and well-drained will satisfy most begonias’ re­quirements. Even though begonias are not usually difficult, they do prefer abundant watering in the morning to allow the soil to dry out during the day. “No one really knows what that offer price is or what the conditions are. I don’t know what the offer is, but if I want that house, I’m going to put in a lot more money and take out conditions for inspection and financing and everything else. Given there’s a shortage of housing on the market, people want to get into the market and they have to compete.”

Of the more than 120 houses that were listed in Newmarket in early May, for example, nearly 110 had offer dates attached, Jarrah said.

However, the hot market is creating some unintended consequences. With prices jumping so quickly, banks are having difficulty accurately gauging property values. So lenders are starting to ask purchasers to come up with larger down payments, to make up for the significant difference between the assessed value of the home and its purchase price.

“Every home has a reasonable limit to what it’s worth,” Asensio said. “We’ve had a couple of scenarios where we’ve actually turned down offers because they were so high you can’t finance to these levels. We’ve turned offers away that were astronomical for the value of the area.

That’s a hard decision. The need and the greed of the seller factors in.”

Bidders also often exclude some standard conditions from their offers, including home inspections. The decision is putting purchasers at risk.

“It’s a scary thing,” Weisleder said. “The pressure is

high to put in an offer without conditions, in order to win the bidding war. When you put in an offer without conditions, you could have all kinds of serious problems with the property condition after closing, which could cost who knows how much money to fix.”

The market is also forcing first-time homebuyers to look for cheaper properties farther north, in municipalities such as Barrie, Essa Township, Georgina and Innisfil.

“Newmarket is not a first-time homebuyer community anymore,” Jarrah said, noting the market should stay hot for another 12 to 18 months.

Others aren’t sure the market will slow down by then.

“Are we overpriced?” Asensio said “Realistically… not really. We’re still one of the most affordable areas in the country. I don’t believe we’re in a bubble and I don’t foresee that prices are going to drop anytime soon.”

While rising home values may excite potential sellers, they need to remember that other houses are also jumping in price. So, the hike may negate some of their gains when they try to purchase another property.

Sellers should consider buying the next house first, before listing their current property — a decision that will ensure a smoother transition between homes.

Buyers, meanwhile, are advised to stay within their means, even if that forces them to walk away from a bidding war.

“Don’t sacrifice everything to make that mortgage payment,” Weisleder said.

POKER FACE Poker face — While you may be excited or overwhelmed when bids come in, it’s important to keep emotions in check.

“The bidding process can be fun to watch,” Asensio says. “Even if you love the offer, stay calm. Nobody’s supposed to know your reaction.”

CLOSING INSURANCE This will cover you in case the proposed buyer has to back away. Deposits don’t necessarily end up in the hands of the sellers. In many cases, that money actually ends up in trust accounts held within the real estate industry.

“Those cheques don’t go anywhere; they’re just lost,” Asensio says.

ANOTHER HOME LINED UP Consider purchasing the next property before placing your current home on the market. This lessens the risk of market fluctuations and ensures there’s a place for you to go after you sell.

“You’ve got to do it within the same time (period),” Weisleder says. “Otherwise, you’re speculating whether the market will go down or up and you could be without a place to live.”

Fifty-four junior firefighters were put through their training paces and had a bucket brigade of fun to boot, during the annual Junior Firefighter Day in Georgina June 3.

Each of the nine municipalities in York Region selected a crew of six winners in Grade 3 from a safety theme contest held in the spring.

To be chosen as a winner, students had to write an essay or create a poster that included a variety of safety components including

traffic, pedestrian, bike and bike helmets, 25 fire and burn, poison, playground and water safety.

Hosted by Georgina at the Sutton Arena, the junior firefighters had a blast along with the mayor and fire chief from each of their municipalities.

Outfitted in their T-shirt and baseball cap ‘uniform’, they rode in a fire truck, had fire extinguisher training, discovered just how hard it is to handle a fire hose and learned other safety tips from York Regional Police and York Paramedics.

Barbara passed away peacefully at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket on Wednesday, June 1st, 2016 at the age of 85 years. Beloved wife of the late Gerald Langford (1981). Loving mother of David (Sally), Valerie, Steve (Patricia), Rose (Brian Sumi), and of the late Allan Langford. Cherished ‘Gran’ of Scott, Jody, Samantha, Trista, Jason, Sarah, Andrew, Christopher, Chelsea, and several great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends from both Canada and England.
