Environment Canada has confirmed an F-1 tornado touched down in Georgina Saturday.
Georgina and Brock residents in Port Bolster continue to clean up after a severe thunderstorm, which included a confirmed F-1 tornado, blew through the Clovelly Cove and Durham 23 area around 1 p.m. Aug. 13. Georgina fire crews were on scene after numerous calls of downed trees and hydro wires.
On the Georgina side of Durham 23, most of Bill Bosworth’s garage ended up two yards over in the Prohney’s backyard. “Everything went black and it was like hurricane winds through here,” said one woman. Clovelly Cove remained closed to traffic for most of Saturday afternoon for cleanup. Extensive damage was also reported in the park at the southern tip of Clovelly Cove. Numerous trees were down on the east side of Durham 23, including one residence that lost most of its trees on the 60 by 300-foot property. “It was scary. We were sitting outside when the tree narrowly missed our house,” the homeowner said. No one was hurt. There were also reports of damage, flooding
and power outages across Georgina. Environment Canada sent a survey team out to investigate the Pefferlaw and Port Bolster area Sunday morning and, later that day, confirmed an F-1 tornado was to blame. The tornado was spotted near Sunset Beach to Port Bolster on the southeast shore of Lake Simcoe at around 12:50 p.m., according to Dave Phillips of Environment Canada. “This is the fifth confirmed tornado of the season,” said Phillips. “We normally get 12 tornadoes so this is less than what we expect.” A cold front that came through on Saturday See DOWNED, page 11.
