The Made in Georgina (MIG) Emerging Musician Showcase is down to the final four and now it’s up to you to vote for your favourite.

The Ministry of Labour continues its investigation this week and laid an additional order against Krate’s Marina after one of its employees was pinned beneath a front-end loader during haul-out operations April 21.

A Krate’s employee suffered a broken leg as a result of the accident and was transported to hospital.

After a preliminary on-site investigation by an inspector with the Ministry of Labour, Krate’s was served with a total of three orders and one requirement to cease operation of the front-end loader involved in the incident until it passed safety tests.

Under the orders, the operational con-

trols for the front-end loader involved in the incident are not to be activated from outside of the operator cab; at least one member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) representing the employer and at least one member of the committee representing workers must be certified members; and that proof of compliance be provided to the ministry.

After a second MOL inspection, an additional order was issued to Krate’s Keswick Inc. to prepare and review at least annually a written occupational health and safety policy and develop and maintain a program to implement that policy.

The orders remain outstanding as of Tuesday, according to the ministry.

Island ferry dry-docked for up to 6 weeks

Georgina Island cottagers and residents will be out a ferry for at least the next month.

The Aazhaawe has been dry-docked due to a mandatory Transport Canada inspection required every five years for commercially registered vessels.

The quinquennial inspection is on top of annual inspections for a vessel to be issued a safety certificate.

Inspections generally take two to three days, according to Transport Canada, but Chippewas of Georgina Island band council sent out notification to residents and cottagers stating the ferry could be out of service for up to six weeks.

As inspection of the vessel is ongoing,

Transport Canada said it would be inappropriate to comment at this time whether there was extensive damage to the ferry’s hull as a result of operating throughout most of the winter due to the minimal ice formation.

But Aazhaawe operator Greg Big Canoe, who supervised some minor mechanical repair of the ferry in mid-February, said last winter was the first he had ever seen the ferry run past mid-January.

“Plowing through ice can be pretty hard on a ferry,” he said.

While the ferry is in dry-dock, the Snake Island water taxi will be available to transport cottagers to and from the island. Contact operator Mike McCue at 905-955-0027 regarding booking availability and fees.

Island residents were informed the water taxi will be running, with crew members available to assist with boarding the boat

and loading of any belongings, in addition to barge services being available by calling 905-853-3991.

Vehicle transportation for any community members needing a ride to and from the water taxi will also be provided and no band member will be subject to fees on the water taxi while the ferry is out of service, according to the island’s transportation staff.

Encourage more track use

Social media postings unfair to teachers

ewmarket resident Brian Walker was running on the track at Huron Heights Secondary School last week, as he had done regularly for the past 15 years, when he was approached by a school representative and asked to leave.

It’s unclear the specific reason for the request — was it because the field portion of the area wasn’t ready for use or was it because the track was considered private property?

Walker obliged the request and left without pressing the matter, so the specifics may never be discovered.

Regardless, the request was out of line.

It’s understandable that officials don’t want anyone on the field this early in the season. It’s not uncommon for fields to be off limits until the ground dries out enough to ensure the field will hold up for the entire season.

But Walker wasn’t using the field. He was using the track — the already dry and ready-for-use track.

As for the private property argument, that would be understandable if he was there during regular school hours, but it was 5:20 p.m., so he wasn’t impeding any schoolsanctioned student activities.

The fact of the matter is when students are using the field, it should be considered off limits to the public.

But when all of the school buses are gone and the students have left for the day, there’s no reason community residents — who pay for these facilities through their education taxes — shouldn’t be permitted to make use of these outdoor facilities.

It makes no sense to leave tracks and fields empty when the focus is on trying to get people more active.

We should be going out of our way to encourage the proper use of our facilities at all times of the day.

Community papers still being read If you’re reading this, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that the rumoured demise of community newspapers is vastly incorrect.

Readership of weekly community newspapers in Ontario is strong, according to the Community Newspaper Readership Report released by BrandSpark International. The report, conducted in partnership with Metroland Media, found that 73 per cent of Ontarians surveyed have read at least one of the last four issues of their Metroland Media community newspaper.

Locally, the results are even stronger at 83 per cent.

That means more than eight in 10 people turn to the Aurora Banner, Bradford West Gwillimbury Topic, East Gwillimbury Express, Georgina Advocate, King Connection, Markham Economist & Sun, Newmarket Era, Richmond Hill/ Thornhill Liberal, Stouffville SunTribune and Vaughan Citizen for their local news.

Most impressive is that almost nine of 10 younger adults (between the ages of 18 and 35)

surveyed are reading their community newspaper as much or more often than last year. That number jumps to 92 per cent for all adults surveyed.

“I think it’s fair to say that we were surprised at the strength of community newspapers in light of how print in general is perceived,” said Mark Baltazar, vice-president and partner at BrandSpark International.

“These findings reinforce how much local information matters to Ontarians. Community newspapers are playing a major role in the lives of the people we studied, keeping them connected to what’s going on in their own backyards.”

Compared to last year, 13 per cent of the people surveyed indicate they are reading Metroland newspapers more often, while almost 80 per cent have not changed their readership habits.

Only 6 per cent of the people indicate they are reading it less.

This shows there is a strong appetite for the community-level, hyper-local news that community newspapers, in print and online, are uniquely set up to deliver.

Re: Bullying debate re-ignited at Keswick school, April 14.

I am saddened by the claims of bullying made by Robin Porter and her daughter for several reasons.

First, her choice to make postings on social media (Facebook) accusing teachers of being bullies seems unfair and unkind.

It is equally unfair that thousands of people felt the need to click “share” without knowing any facts firsthand, and/or to participate in a protest against the school.

In this case, the teachers are not permitted to make comments publicly in their defence or on the situation, which only makes the situation more frustrating for all involved.

Second, the bullying experienced by Porter’s daughter is sad and I have no doubt the school has taken appropriate measures, but when do we recognize that the community, including the parents of

these bullies and the bullies themselves, play the most important role in this problem?

Bullying is a complex issue involving a variety of factors (mental health, in both the victim and bully, loss of control, environmental factors, etc.) that are not strictly a “school problem.”

Schools have an important role to play in educating students and teaching them inclusive practices and character, but parents and the community play an equally important, if not more important role in this problem and it is unfair to put all of the pressure and, often blame, on schools to solve a societal problem.

Community problems require community solutions. We all need to work together — schools, parents, students and all community members — to recognize the underlying causes of bullying in our area and solve the issues, not spend time attacking each other via social media.

It was a cleanup in the aisles of epic proportions at a local grocery store this week with some lucky Zehrs customers walking away with free groceries Tuesday.

“It’s amazing,” a beaming Samantha Ceasar said amidst the confetti after receiving $200 of her $251 grocery bill for free thanks to a customer appreciation Market Moment at the Keswick location of the Zehrs division of the Loblaw company.

The 25-year-old mom was one of 30 customers to receive a total of $1,800 in groceries on Zehrs’ tab thanks to the campaign.

“It’s about creating a moment with the customers to make their day and give back to the communities that support us,” store manager Scott Gracey explained.

The moments include doing things such as cleaning off customers’ vehicles in the winter and promotional giveaways.

The Keswick store, however, was one of 100 market division stores selected across North America to hold the “big moment” —

a 20-minute window where groceries at the checkout would be free up to $200.

“We were one of the lucky few and happy to do it for our customers to show we appreciate what they’ve contributed to the business,” Gracey said.

While Ceasar’s 19-month-old son Silas was remarkably nonplussed by the fanfare, confetti and horns going off all around him at 3 p.m., he did enjoy one of the free cupcakes.

His mom, however, was thrilled by the unsuspected surprise that went a long way to helping make ends meet.

While she doesn’t necessarily always shop at Zehrs, she joked she may from now on — at 3 p.m.

Fellow Keswick resident Elvia Atkins, who does a little shopping almost every day at Zehrs, wasn’t quite sure what was going on with all eight checkouts roped off with red ribbon.

But she was delighted once she discovered her shopping cart of $50 in groceries would be free.

“It’s a nice little gift. I’m very lucky to have been here at the right time.”

The town’s primary planning policy document guiding land use in Georgina from now until 2031 was passed by council last week.

Council voted 5-1 in favour of the town’s new official plan April 20.

Ward 3 Councillor Dave Neeson was the lone holdout, but made it clear his only opposition was that the official plan still contained planning designations based on almost 30-year-old approvals that supported the DG Group’s Maple Lake Estates development on a provincially significant wetland in the North Gwillimbury Forest.

ment did not garner any support, council did make one amendment regarding the removal of a study area on properties located south of the Keswick business park on the northeast corner of Woodbine Avenue and Ravenshoe Road.

Since the study area was in previous drafts of the official plan, but removed in its final version released 10 days prior to last week’s meeting, council restored the study area designation to allow affected property owners the opportunity to address the fact their selfdescribed “gateway lands” were designated as flood plain and part of the natural heritage system under planning policies.

council are in favour of protecting the North Gwillimbury Forest from development, but the town’s official plan was not the avenue being pursued.

Instead, the town is pursuing a land swap process facilitated by the province and its review of the Greenbelt Plan that, if successful, would bounce the Maple Lake Estates development from the wetlands on the north

side of Deer Park Road to agricultural land on the south side.

Disappointed that the town’s official plan did not prohibit development on MLE’s provincially significant wetlands, North Gwillimbury Forest Alliance chairperson Jack Gibbons said his group will be seeking an amendment from York Region when it reviews the town’s official plan.

Flags were flown at half-mast at Georgina facilities to honour former town councillor and Sutton resident Clare Morrison, who died April 18 at the age of 89.

The Second World War veteran, retired Ontario provincial criminal court judge and senior council (special prosecutions) for the Government of Alberta died peacefully at Southlake Regional Health Centre with his beloved partner, Barbara Fuller, by his side.

Deputy Mayor Danny Wheeler remembered Morrison, who sat as a councillor from 1988 to 1991, as a “feisty one” who was “always fired up and ready to go.”

Many offering their condolences this past week fondly recalled the man they knew as “Judge” for his celebrated wit, passion, life chats, smiles and laughter, most of which occurred during lively conversations around a table at the Sutton Legion.

The 422 RCAF (Nipissing) Wing North Bay unit added its own remembrance to those of Morrison’s many comrades at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 356, Sut-

ton and the 429 Georgina Wing of the RCAF — many of whom lined up in colour party formation in a solemn show of respect outside Forrest & Taylor Funeral Home April 20.

“He will be keenly missed by everyone who knew him and we hope you will all find some consolation in the record of brilliant achievements he leaves behind him,” the 422’s secretary posted.

Morrison’s larger-than-life personality and legacy of great accomplishment was celebrated as the mark of a true one-of-a-kind, wellrespected gentlemen among men.

A celebration of Morrison’s life is planned for May 7 at the Sutton Legion from 1 to 4 p.m.

Memorial donations to the Poppy Fund of the Sutton Legion would be appreciated by the family.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING REGARDING 2016 DEVELOPMENT CHARGES On Wednesday May 25th, 2016 Georgina Town Council will hold a public meeting pursuant to the Development Charges Act, 1997, regarding proposed development charge rates and policies to be applied throughout the Town. It is proposed that the enactment of a new development charge by-law by Council will occur on a date subsequent to the public meeting, Wednesday, June 22, 2016.

Development Charges are levied against new development and are a primary source of funding for growth-related capital expenditures. The 2016 Development Charges Background Study relates to the provision of the Town-wide services of library, fire, parks and recreation, operations, general government, roads and related, and stormwater management, as well as the area-specific services of roads, water and sewer.

Council is required, under the Development Charges Act, 1997, to hold at least one public meeting to allow the public the opportunity to review and provide comments on the 2016 Town of Georgina Development Charges Background Study and the proposed Development Charges By-law.

York Regional Police are still investigating a serious two-vehicle collision that closed Metro Road at Varney Road in Keswick late Sunday afternoon.

All four elderly occupants of a Honda Civic travelling on Metro Road were sent to hospital after colliding in the intersection with a Chevy Equinox at around 5:30 p.m., according to police.

The regional group program is offered Saturday mornings in Richmond Hill starting April 30 and focuses on strengthening personal and parenting skills for dads with children aged six or younger.

Fathers will learn about topics such as the importance of fathers in child development,

CHEYNE, CWO Donald Keith (Retired) September 8, 1940 - April 19, 2016 Peacefully after a stubborn fight with cancer. Beloved husband of Jane Clark Cheyne. Cherished father of Susan (Graham) and Stephen (Loreto). Grandfather of Amanda (Andrew) and Ryan. Great grandfather of Alyssa and Avery. Loving son of the late John Donald and Mildred Irene Cheyne. Brother of Dawn Thomson (Iain), William (deceased), Frank (Iris), Penny Litke (deceased), Lois Farren (Dale) and Carol Bowers. Son-in-law of the late Harold and Helen Clark.

Born in Toronto, he grew up in Kettleby, Ontario. He joined the RCAF in 1957 as a Telephone Technician, then remustered to Radar Technician. He rose to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer retiring in 1995. In the RCAF and later the CAF, he served in Moisie, Senneterre, Metz France, (where he played drums in the base band and was a projectionist in the base theatre), Clinton, Trenton, Goose Bay Labrador and Ottawa. Keith like his father and grandfather was an avid woodworker, having built many beautiful pieces of furniture. In Goose Bay he ran the wood hobby shop and tested Cubs for their woodworking badge. After Keith retired he assisted seniors with household repairs, through Rural Ottawa South Support Services. Thanks to Dr. Glenwood Goss, staff of 5 East, emergency and the cancer centre at the General; CCAC and Bayshore Nursing for the wonderful care given to Keith. He spent his final days in the Central West Hospice and the family extends their gratitude for helping make him comfortable the final stages of his fight. Friends may attend a visitation at the Kars Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes 1610 Roger Stevens Dr., Kars on Monday, April 25th from 2-4 and 7-9. Memorial service will take place at North Gower United Church on Tuesday, April 26th at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, Hospice Care Ottawa or North Gower United Church would be appreciated by the family. Chris was a technical writer at Nortel for many years, but primarily a journalist in her early career. She was a reporter at The Newmarket Era, The Toronto Star and The Edmonton Journal. Chris was also a professional writer and editor across the GTA for over 25 years. Chris had also been a family entertainer for over 25 years, bringing joy to families, summer camps and library programs through her characters U Who (the clown), Miss Tilly, Mrs. Claus and The Dutchess.

In recent years, she expanded her talents to include hypnosis entertainment, smoking cessation using hypnosis, pet sitting and walking, and she was a skilled and compassionate English as a Second Language teacher.

Chris is predeceased by her parents Antonia and Theodorus Van Krieken, and adopted parents Melva and Brian Million. She leaves behind her brothers Tony, John, Henry and sister Henriette, and nieces and nephews. Sadly missed by Anne-Marie Million, her husband Paul and their children. She also leaves behind her special and caring friends, and beloved dog Jake.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, May 3rd, beginning at St. John’s Cemetery in Newmarket at 4 p.m. (follow the balloons), followed by a short presentation at Fairy Lake and then a gathering at Newmarket Community Centre & Lions Hall (200 Doug Duncan Drive, Newmarket) at 5:30 p.m.
