Provincial Tories express anger over leadership KIM ZARZOUR kzarzour@yrmg.com Is the Ontario Progressive Conservative party imploding? With a strong lead in the polls, PC Leader Patrick Brown appeared to be cruising to an easy victory in the next provincial election. Now some say the party is in danger of collapse. Disgruntled and disillusioned PC supporters are reportedly dropping out in droves following months of allegations of improprieties, intimidation, ballotstuffing and fraud by Brown’s supporters during local votes to nominate PC candidates. PC Party president Rick Dykstra seems undeterred by the loss of supporters, saying the party has grown from 10,000 members to more than 100,000 in the past two years since Brown became leader. "We are gaining new members

Wet weather brings mosquitoes, West Nile SIMON MARTIN smartin@yrmg.com The wet weather in 2017 has made for ideal conditions for mosquitoes, and three mosquito traps in The Regional Municipality of York have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). The traps were located in Aurora near Yonge Street and Murray Drive, Markham near McCowan

Road and Hwy. 7, and Whitchurch-Stouffville close to Main Street and Tenth Line. "Ongoing surveillance tells us West Nile virus is present in the community and protection against mosquitos remains important," Dr. Karim Kurji, York Region’s Medical Officer of Health, said. "By taking simple precautions, residents can reduce the risk of West Nile virus and

exposure to mosquitos." According to the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention website, 70 to 80 per cent of people who contract West Nile virus have no symptoms. About one in five people infected with West Nile virus develop a fever with other symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash, and most of these

people fully recover. Fewer than one per cent of people infected develop a serious neurological illness such as encephalitis or meningitis. As part of York Region’s 2017 West Nile virus (WNV) Control Plan, York Region Public Health larvicides catch basins to interrupt mosquito breeding, educates residents on self-protection, investigates human cases and conducts surveil-

lance. York Region treats catch basins along Regional and municipal roads and other stagnant public water sources, including roadside ditches. Private backyard catch basins are treated upon request. or TTY 1-866-512-6228 or visit york.ca/westnile. The Regional Municipality of York consists of nine local cities and towns, and provides a variety of programs and services to 1.2 million residents, 50,000 businesses and 595,000 employees. daily and we will continue to work with all of our current members as well," Dykstra said. But longstanding, cardcarrying members of the party, expressing their disappointment and "disgust" with the party’s tactics under Brown, are vowing to withhold their votes or marshalling forces to defeat their leader. Several splinter parties and organizations have mobilized, hoping to derail the PCs in the next provincial election. Brown has said the controversy is evidence of the party’s strong momentum and, based on an internal memo obtained by Metroland, it appears he wants to "bring closure and move forward". In the memo, Dykstra announced that all 64 candidates selected to date would be endorsed by the leader and further appeals for reconsideration would be rendered moot. "Rather than constantly looking in the rear-view mirror, we simply need to move forward," he said. But not everyone is prepared to ignore the rear view, and the fallout continues among longtime members of the party. "We can honestly say that the environment now is as toxic and destructive as we ever have seen it," Tim Broschuk, president, Dr. Richard Bonato, VP, Carl Arsenault, CFO, and Vel Velauthanillai wrote in their letter of resignation from the executive of the Kanata Carleton riding association June 11. The executive quit en masse; the executive board of nearby riding of Ottawa West-Nepean executive

"The party has veered so far from the place we joined that we can no longer in good conscience say that we identify with what it stands for." A similarly worded statement announced the mass resignation of the executive from the Newmarket-Aurora association, pointing to "blatant disregard for the democratic rights of the people". Marie Leone, VP of membership with the Aurora-Newmarket executive, said she and others like her, who have supported the PC party for years,

are stunned. "The party absolutely is imploding," she said. "I’ve never seen anything like this. There’s always internal scrapping, you expect that, but I don’t know about this blatant breaking of the rules...[Brown] can’t win at the rate he is going - he’s losing support of the people the party has always had." Newmarket resident Anne Leroux also believes the party is in danger of collapse. Leroux said she resigned from the AuroraNewmarket board and executive, after 12 years’ in-

believe they have nowhere to go with their vote "So I’m sitting this one out. Even though we face some of the gravest fiscal challenges Ontario has ever seen, I can’t get off my ’old white man’s’ ass and get out the door for him." Moir warns that the party, which was on the verge of winning, is heading towards "a rupture more profound than people think". Carlos Naldinho agrees. The Ottawa man said he has been a member of the party since he was a teen and spent countless hours working for the party, from gruntwork to software assistance. "I’m as diehard as you can be." But now he has spearheaded a new group called ImOut.ca to encourage grassroots, card-carrying Conservatives - particularly those in ridings where nominations were considered "rigged" - to organize against their party by staying home on voting day. "This is our party and it was stolen from us for his own personal serfdom. That’s not what Conservatives are all about. We are about integrity. "If this problem isn’t avoided, if Brown gets elected, he will likely be in that position for four years and never get elected again, harming the party’s reputation for a long time to come." The I’m Out group hopes to help elect a minority government, which would prompt a leadership review and re-evaluation of the entire executive. "This will allow the party to remove the cancer that currently makes it impossible for any thinking conservative to support."

volvement, because the party parachuted in a candidate from outside the community and cheated to let her win - after letting the local riding association "go through the agonizing process of door-knocking, signing up members, identifying a good person to spend time and money putting his name forward...That is just so wrong on so many levels". Leroux has joined the Trillium party, one of two splinter groups gaining strength from PCers that have abandoned ship. A new Facebook group, "GTAers Interested in Poli-

tics", has enlisted a graphic designer to create whiteboard videos and is polling "concerned conservatives" to find out how to fix their party’s problem. Other groups are organizing spin-off parties - Ontario Blue - is reportedly making itself known in coming weeks and another fledgling party, Ontario Alliance, is currently seeking official party status. The Alliance was founded by Jay Tysick, a candidate in Carleton riding who says he was kicked out of the running by Brown after pointing out "shady business" in his local riding nomination. After he went public with what happened, Tysick says he was contacted by PCs from across the province with reports of rigged nominations and resignations. "I realized this was not just a local thing. I had become a lightning rod." Tysick decided they should band together and fight back with a party of their own. "If [Brown] is not going to address these very serious problems, if they’re already lying, cheating, corrupt, what will they do when they’re in government?" Other party supporters, like Bryan Moir, have decided to withhold their vote altogether. Moir says he is "technically" a board member of the King-Vaughan riding association, but admits he has disengaged after witnessing "huge irregularities" by Brown’s people in that riding and more than a dozen others. As bad as the Liberals may be, Moir said, he and others who formed the backbone of the party now

Mom wins top Seneca award HEIDI RIEDNER hriedner@yrmg.com

Support farmers and celebrate the abundance in our communities and across the Greenbelt by sharing a delicious, locally-sourced, meal prepared by Chef Cori Doern.

A Georgina mom of two special needs children took some life lessons back to school and earned one of Seneca College’s highest awards along with an honours bachelor in child development. Lisa Spencer of Jackson’s Point was awarded the Seneca Cup for academic excellence, student involvement and contributing in a meaningful way to others and the community during one of 14 convocation ceremonies held at the school last month. In addition to a co-op placement, Spencer was also a student mentor, chair for the student advisory committee and a member of the program advisory committee. "It was a lot of hard work so the award is definitely very rewarding, especially because it was staff nominated," Spencer says.

Seneca College photo

Lisa Spencer As a mother of two children with special needs including her nine-yearold son, Dexter, whom the community rallied around a few years ago during his extensive brain surgeries and recuperation, and fiveyear-old daughter Bridget, who has autism - going back to school in the field of early childhood education allowed her to incorporate her experiences, interests and career aspirations into the diverse course content.

Describing the whole experience as "cathartic" in one sense, allowing her to create personal meaning and professional understanding, Spencer understands how families struggle to navigate community and education resources. "Going to school full time requires sacrifices, whether that means spending less time with family or working overtime to pay tuition. For me, I distinctly remember completing assignments from my son’s bedside in the emergency room." "I only missed three or four days. I needed to be there for his shunt surgery, but after that, my husband was able to take care of all the post-op stuff," Spencer says, happy to add there wasn’t one night where she missed a family dinner or didn’t read a book to her children at bed time. "Those are two of the most important things in life, right?"

TERESA LATCHFORD tlatchford@yrmg.com Two York Regional Police officers knocked on the door and identified themselves. Without a response, they carefully entered the home not sure what they were walking into as they responded to a report of a domestic incident. Slowly walking down the front hall, they were greeted with hostility from a male sitting on a couch. "Get out of my house! You can’t come in," the male screamed, hurling a beer bottle at the officers. "You don’t have a warrant, get out!" The male could not be calmed and the officers decided to deploy a Taser to incapacitate the man who had allegedly assaulted his wife who was hiding in the bathroom. This was the scenario at YRP’s $30.4-million training facility that just celebrated its grand opening in

East Gwillimbury. Dignitaries and community members gathered to tour the 89,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that features 10 classrooms, a simulation training room, practical skills training room, 50-metre firing range, police vehicle operations driving simulator, fitness rooms, lockers and a lunch room. The facility acts as a onestop-training-shop for 2,200 sworn and civilian members. The idea for the facility has been brewing since 2004 and will be the solution to outgrowing the Vaughan training facility at District 4. YRP will no longer have to use the Sharon Gun Club to train in the use of rifles now that the gun range is long enough to meet training standards nor the old school in Nobleton for tactical training, which can now be done in house. More than 70 training programs are offered and 250,000 training hours will

for use in practicing positioning while shooting. The driving simulator allows training officers to assess the basic ability of new recruits in handling vehicles. "Our motto is out think,

not out drive, and this room allows us to give trainees the tools they need to do just that," Sgt. Ron Axamit said. "We can monitor their reactions to situations presented, eye movement to see if they are checking mirrors and more in simulations." The scenario room requires the use of critical decision-making skills. Training officers are given no more information than a 911 call would provide and are forced to make quick decisions as role players act out realistic situations. A house is built of panels including windows, doors and even a bathroom. It is equipped with foam furniture to ensure trainees are safe. "The simplest of tasks can become quite complex in stressful situations," Sgt. Jeff Nolan said. "We recreate those stressful situations so an officer’s recall is quick when it happens in real life." ABOUT US

Speeding-related deaths on the rise For a few minutes on a Sunday afternoon in April, a stretch of Highway 400 in Barrie resembled a scene from one of the (seemingly endless) Fast and Furious movies. A dozen vehicles, including a Lamborghini, a RollsRoyce, a BMW and a Porsche, were reported speeding "erratically" and "dangerously" northbound toward the city. Fortunately, they sped right into a police blockade. Twelve people were charged with stunt driving, their vehicles impounded for a week, and their licences suspended for a week. Was that a one-off, unique circumstance? Hardly. Last winter, Toronto police caught a driver doing 203 km/h in a 60-km/h zone. In another incident, radar clocked a 22-year-old man doing 183 km/h on Highway 401. There have been about 110 stunt driving charges laid in Toronto so far in 2017. About 200 charges were laid in all of 2016. School crosswalks, construction zones, it doesn’t seem to matter when it comes to reckless, dangerous driving. And the tragic consequences are adding up. As of June 26, speeding has been linked with 30 road deaths on OPP-patrolled roads, compared to 17 by this time in 2016. The OPP cites speeding drivers as the No. 1 cause of road fatalities so far this year, with the death toll in this category up by 76 per cent. Of the speeding tickets handed out this year by the OPP, more than 1,400 charges were against drivers clocked at 50 km/h or more over the posted speed limit. "For some drivers, instances of speeding and other forms of aggressive driving are frequent and for others, they are part of their everyday driving behaviour, said OPP Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair in a media statement. Much like drunk driving, it seems that existing penalties simply aren’t stiff enough to amount to a deterrent. The maximum penalties for an aggressive driving conviction include a jail term of up to six months, fines of up to $10,000, and extended licence suspension. But, in non-tragic circumstances, are those penalties ever invoked? Would it make a difference if they were? Somewhere in between simply losing a car for a week and spending six months in jail, there must be a penalty severe enough to make people think twice before trying to emulate Hollywood stunt drivers on our roads. This deadly behaviour needs to be stopped before more people are killed.

Alarming some so eager to limit free speech Re: LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Free speech not a licence to spread falsehoods, July 6. It is alarming that some people in Canada are so eager and willing to limit the free speech of those whose ideas and opinions run counter to their own. Contrary to letter writer David Kempton’s assertion, free speech does give licence to individuals and the free press to say whatever they like, as long as it is not outside existing limitations; e.g. it is not libellous or hate speech. Free speech includes opposing views Re: LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Free speech not a licence to spread falsehoods, July 6. Mr. Kempton is accusing YRMG of publishing lies, or in his politically correct speech "alternate facts" about alleged climate change. Now, most people have an opinion on this subject, most probably formed by reading reports or papers published by scientists or

people who present themselves as being knowledgeable and qualified to offer such opinions. David Kempton may be one of those people that are trained and qualified to speak with certainty on climate change or lack of it; if so, he didn’t identify himself as such in his letter. So, Mr. Kempton, is your letter based on your own scientific research, or like most of us, based on other people’s research? If it is the latter, then maybe you are the one putting out false information! Who is to say you are right and the others are wrong? It seems to me that you are one of those people who is all for free speech as long as you agree with it. If not, you want it banned from the paper. Shame on you. Anthony Whittock Newmarket

Do I gain points or lose points? You gain them. After you are convicted of a traffic offence, demerit points are assessed by the Ministry of Transportation and stay on your driving record for 2 years. G1 and G2 licences are the most sensitive when it comes to gaining demerit points. The number of points you stand to gain, from a particular offence, is not listed anywhere on your ticket. Laid off? A New Career Opportunity Starts Here Recently laid off from work? Second Career could be the right program for you to retrain into the career of your dreams.

When should I take my child for their first dentist appointment? As soon as your child’s first tooth appears, or no later than his/her first birthday. It is recommended that you plan a visit to the dentist every six months after their first visit, to catch small problems early.

So what is Second Career? Second Career is an Ontario government-funded program which allows individuals, who have had an established layoff from their last position worked (on or after January 1, 2005), a chance to retrain in a college-level program for up to two years. This program is set up to assist with training costs for up to $28,000 to support tuition, transportation, books and other training-related costs. There are also possible additional funds for those individuals who have a disability or who may require academic upgrading before starting their college level course.

Early dental care for your child allows the dentist to tell you if crooked or crowded teeth may cause

problems later on. Also, getting to the dentist as your child’s permanent molars just come in means that your dentist can suggest sealing them to protect from cavities. A sealant is a kind of plastic that is put on the chewing surface of the molars. The plastic seals the tooth and makes it less likely to trap food and germs. Children’s dental care at home should start even before your child has teeth – it gives baby teeth a clean place to come into. Here’s what to do: • Lay your baby in a comfortable place. • Use a soft baby brush or wrap your finger in a clean, damp washcloth. Then, brush or wipe your baby’s gums and teeth. DO NOT use toothpaste until your child has teeth.

What are some good TIPS FOR RUNNING?

Administering an Estate If an individual dies with or without a Will, certain steps are required by the courts prior to the administration of their Estate. If the deceased during his/ her lifetime prepared and executed a Will, the Estate Trustee listed in the deceased’s Will may be appointed to administer the Estate. If the deceased did not have a Will then the Estate Trustee may be their next of kin. Documents are sent for approval by the court to legally prove that the Trustee is eligible to administer the deceased’s Estate. Hiring an Estate Lawyer can make these steps less stressful. An Estate Lawyer can notarize copies of the Will, Death Certificate or Marriage Certificate in order to facilitate the Trustee’s access to the deceased’s personal assets to ensure the Estate is probated in a timely fashion. Administering an Estate can be overwhelming for individuals who are trying to cope with the loss of a family member. If you require the assistance of an Estate Lawyer for the administration of an Estate, contact Donnell Law Group to book your consultation.

1. STRETCH before and after running and target muscle groups used for running. Dynamic stretches in which you move through a range of motion should be done before running to warm up the muscles and increase circulation. Static stretches are done after a run to relax the muscle. 2. WALK BEFORE RUNNING - Walk easy for 1 minute, then briskly for 1-2 mins and repeat twice. 3. BUILD GRADUALLY - Start with a 2 min run/1 min walk and increase your distance by 10% each week. Recover between runs. Rest days are as important as running days. Vary the direction you run to avoid straining the same parts of your body especially if you’re running on a track. 4. DRINK FLUIDS - Get to know the best time for you to eat or drink to prevent cramps or nausea. 5. COOL DOWN with a relaxed walk for 5-10 mins which rids the metabolic wastes and excess fluid out of your muscles and allows your heart rate to slow down gradually. If you would like to prepare your body for running, require orthotics, or experience an injury, let the Team of Physiotherapists, Exercise Therapists, Chiropractor and Massage Therapists at Keswick and Sutton Physiotherapy manage all your needs!

Of course. Only a small fraction of nerve fibers deal with pain transmission. This is the reason for a thorough physical exam including a computerized nerve scan (surface EMG and infrared thermography), orthopedic and neurological testing, ranges of motion and specific spinal palpation along with x-rays (if necessary). According to Dorland’s medical dictionary, “Health is a state of optimum physical, mental and social well being, and not merely a lack of disease or infirmity.” Webster’s states that “Health is a state of 100% function 100% of the time.” Chiropractors can help optimize your function and your health with or without symptoms.

JOHN CUDMORE jcudmore@yrmg.com Hannah Daniels and a few friends are preparing to tackle the Bahamas. Not for a summer vacation escape, mind you. Rather, it’s all business for Daniels and her pals as they compete in the women’s under-18 rugby sevens tournament at 2017 Youth Commonwealth Games. The largest sporting event ever hosted in the Bahamas is a multi-sport competition, running July 18 to 23, and for the sixth time since the Games’ inception in 2000. Daniels is one of seven Ontario-based players named to the 12-player team for the event. The Sutton resident was also part of the Canadian contingent which captured a tournament at Easter in Orlando, Fla., including a victory over the United States. There are only two or three changes from the roster that prevailed in Orlando. "It’s super exciting and I’m very excited to be going to the Bahamas to represent Canada," said the Sutton District High School graduate, who cemented her place on the

"I was pretty surprised because there are so many people to pick from." She is currently attending a mini-camp at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus prior to the team’s departure Sunday night. The threeday tournament is slated to start on July 19. As a Team Ontario member, she does recall playing against some of her new teammates at the recent under-18 national championships in March, an event won by British Columbia. "I’m looking forward to playing with good friends that I have developed with and the high level of competition level we’ve never see before at this level," said Daniels, who plays in the forward pack. "We’ll see how we can do." Canada placed second at the event in 2015, when the sport made its debut. Daniels is a member of the Aurora Barbarians women’s squad, although her availability to the 15aside program has been

reduced due to her obligations the sevens program. Down the road, she can envision herself playing for a while as a member of the national program for either version of the sport. "I’d love to be part of it but you never know what will happen," she said. "I like both but haven’t been playing much lately to prevent injury. "In 15s there is more contact and less room to move. Sevens is more about speed and skill set. I think it is possible I could do sevens but I will have to work on my speed and conditioning. I have decent speed, but I can work on it." She started playing rugby when she entered high school and stayed with the sport, ultimately connecting with the Barbs. "I played hockey for most of my life," said Daniels, noting she has given up chasing pucks for rucks. "I just like the fact I can be as aggressive as I want, but it’s still a very classy sport. Everyone is respectful."

This month Canada celebrates its 150th Anniversary of Confederation. The official motto of Canada is: “A Mari usque ad Mare”, which translated means “From sea to sea”. This motto was based on a biblical Psalm (72:8): “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth”. Our nation has deep Christian roots going back to even the days of Jacques Cartier and the Fathers of Confederation.
