The Great Crash of October 1929 resulted when panic struck Wall Street, Toronto and Montreal resulting in billions of dollars in lost revenues for investors and businesses in wild stock selloffs. It was followed in 1930 and beyond by the Great Depression as companies laid off thousands of workers and many shut down. Unemployment rose to a record 25 per cent and, in a time when there was no social safety net, people struggled to make ends meet. Only the outbreak of war in 1939-40 and the need for war supplies brought employment and industry back.

KIM ZARZOUR kzarzour@yrmg.com Daniel Share-Strom was just three when it became clear what his mission in life would be - and that the mission would involve a microphone. He had always been a different child, not really interested in other kids, in toys, in communicating with others. But one day he and his mom were at garage sale and Daniel made a beeline for the toy box. He grabbed a microphone, stood in the middle of the driveway and began belting out "Blue Suede Shoes". It happened again at a family friend’s concert, when one of the musicians invited those in the audience to perform, and quiet little Daniel leaped on stage. Things at home weren’t so stellar, though. Daniel was a smart kid, but the things he did made him look dumb. He hated loud noises, couldn’t ride a bike, was socially awkward, clumsy, disorganized - and the worst part: these "problems" were what people used to identify him, rather than the many other things he did well. At 10, he was diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome and he and his family began the agonizing process of ensuring he got the supports he needed at school. He had been tapping into his love for the microphone at local weddings and funerals, but now Daniel had a mission he would use his "stage presence" to explain what it meant to have Aspergers. It started at Keswick

Over the next 13 years, his mission mushroomed as he was invited to speak at bigger venues throughout Ontario - at colleges, universities, disabilities organizations. He spoke to Southlake hospital’s mental health professionals, to volunteers at 310Cope (York Region’s community crisis response), and in 2016, he gave a TedTalk at York University. It was the latter that got him noticed south of the border and this week, he has been invited to take his show on the road in Atlanta, where he will be keynote

speaker at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Autism Awareness Month Event, April 20. He is following in big footsteps: previous speakers include world-famous autism advocates Dr. Temple Grandin and actor Ed Asner who has a son with autism and two grandsons on the spectrum. Daniel and his mother, Maxine Share, recently moved to Bradford and they often speak at events together, wearing funny glasses they call "autism goggles" to show why the world needs to see autism differently. It is time, they say, to rebrand autism spectrum disorders, in the same way

marketing has made waves on the issue of mental illness. Aspergers is a neurobiological disorder on the higher-functioning end of the autism spectrum and can impact everything from social and organizational skills, to physical activity, language and emotions. Daniel may hate toothbrushes, loud noises and washing his hair - but this is not all he wants us to know about him. Unfortunately, if you are autistic, he says, you are identified by the

things that are "wrong". "We are judged by our distance from so-called normal and by the list of things that have to be fixed," he says. Because autism impacts how one communicates, learns and interacts, the list of things to be "fixed" can be long - and as a result, people with autism grow up feeling broken, he says. "People tend cringe or at very least have preconceived notions of what autism is - someone who can’t

be taught, who’s going to be a problem, who might be at best like Rain Man or Sheldon from Big Bang theory." In fact a surprising number of successful people fall on the autism spectrum, and he believes it’s time for them to "come out of the closet". Those who speak out about depression are helping destigmatize depression and the same approach can help those with autism, he says. Leaving the status quo, he says, is deadly. Maxine, who acts as administrative assistant to Daniel and helps him write his speeches, agrees. "What we’re doing now is killing people," she says. "This system is not working." Those with autism have nine times the suicide rate, she says, they die years earlier than the average person and have 80 per cent unemployment even though they often test very highly and are often extremely skilled in one area. "People are languishing in parents’ basements when they could be doing so much for the world," adds Daniel. Better teacher training, curriculum that can beadjusted to reflect the pace of those on the spectrum, a publiceducation campaign featuring those on the spectrum and encouragement foremployers to hire people with autism can all lead to change, he says. "Autism is not a defect or a mental illness, and it is not a catastrophe. It is simply another way of experiencing the world."

EDUCATION

York public school board seeks new education director TERESA LATCHFORD tlatchford@yrmg.com York Region District School Board is seeking a new director of education. In a released statement, board chair Loralea Carruthers acknowledged J. Philip Parappally’s 17 years of service with the board and wished him the best on the next chapter of his life. Following a scathing report by Ontario Education

Ministry appointed reviewers that criticized the director’s conduct, YRDSB trustees called for Parappally’s resignation. York Region parents have been calling for his resignation since a number of human rights complaints regarding racist incidents within York Region schools and questionable spending by taking to social media with #fireparappally. Parappally was only three

years into his unprecedented 10-year contract with clauses that allowed the board to dismiss him with cause without notice or pay. Trustees also have the authority to dismiss him for any reason with one year’s pay, which was $259,000 annually. "In the interest of ensuring the education of students is not affected during this time, the YRDSB has already begun the search for an interim director," the state-

ment said. The board will be working with the Ontario Education Ministry to determine the best candidate to fill the vacancy. Parents have previously stated that they believe parent groups should be involved in the hiring process. In the short-term, Associate Director of Education Leslie Johnstone has been appointed acting director. While Georgina parent

Robin Legault is pleased to hear Parappally is no longer in the picture, she questions the reasoning behind the appointment of Johnstone as acting director. "When my daughter had an issue, she promised us an answer and to this day we are still waiting," she said. "I’m not sure she is any more forthcoming with information." Johnstone was in the news last year after she and

another board staff member demanded principals intercept mail coming from a parent coalition meant for parent councils. But with the involvement of the Ontario Education Ministry, Legault is a little more confident that a candidate who is compassionate, knowledgeable, able to listen to parents and can make sound business decisions will be found to fill the vacancy.

ABOUT US

Time for local elections to embrace technology The Internet has become an increasingly large presence in our lives. More and more, it’s the means through which we communicate, gather information, enjoy entertainment and even do business. Despite all of that, however, few opportunities exist for citizens to take part in the democratic process electronically. Markham has offered Internet voting during the advanced polling period since 2003, while Ajax introduced electronic voting for the 2014 municipal election. Earlier this month, Newmarket council voted to become the first municipality in York Region to move to a fully electronic voting model for the 2018 election that will allow citizens to cast their vote online or over the telephone instead of the traditional paper ballot method. Residents will still be able to attend a voting location in-person, if they wish, on certain dates and times. Just this week, Bradford West Gwillimbury council voted to eliminate paper ballots and replace them with Internet and telephone voting for next year’s municipal election. The town’s deputy clerk, Tara Reynolds, described electronic voting as a win-win for its convenience, low cost and potential to boost turnout, while also noting that physical electronic polling stations would also be set up for those needing assistance or who simply prefer to get out and vote. At the same time, the City of Vaughan recently considered the idea of electronic voting only to stick with optical scan tabulators to count ballots for the 2018 election. Staff will report back in 2020 on security and implementation measures in time for the 2022 election, but the decision runs headlong against the winds of change. Privacy and security concerns cropped up among Bradford councillors, but Reynolds noted that additional layers of security, beyond a PIN number and birth date entry, could be implemented. Most of us already do our banking online and many of us file our taxes electronically as well, so allowing citizens to cast their ballots via the Internet makes a lot of sense and numerous ways exist to ensure the integrity of the process. Politicians always seem to lament voter turnout figures following an election and electronic voting is an inexpensive way to make it easier for people to participate, especially in areas where geography can pose difficulties reaching a polling station. Every municipality should be working toward implementing electronic voting ideally in time for the 2018 campaign. It’s time for local democracy to enter the 21st century.

• LETTERS TO THE EDITOR • Give developers something real to complain about Re: Governments need to address the GTA’s housing supply crunch, April 6. Bryan Tuckey from BILD is certainly right that there is an affordable housing crisis in the GTA. What he does not mention is that high prices and low supply are a result of developers building more profitable smaller units, and holding onto and not developing over a hundred thousand units that are approved and serviced (124K in Toronto and Oakville alone). While developers might prefer huge taxpayer subsidies to service and rezone protected lands for sprawl, so that they can flip those lands at a tidy profit, this is

clearly not in the public interest, as it has huge taxpayer and environmental cost. If developers continue to make these nonsense claims about land supply, and to withhold the supply of affordable housing, municipalities and the province should expropriate approved lands and build the units themselves or in joint ventures with nonprofit developers. This would allow suitable, affordable units for families and seniors to be built quickly. Laura Bowman East Gwillimbury

in the GTA, but it is not a housing market crisis. The crisis is government that is blind and deaf to the very problems that it creates. There is plenty of housing in the GTA. The problem is there are too many people. As the article states, there are 100,000 people coming to the GTA every year. Are these people migrating here from other parts of Canada? No, these are new Canadians who come to this country under the policies of the federal government. While the GTA suffers with growing congestion, loss of green space and farmland, traffic jams, inadequate transit, and soaring rents and house prices, the federal government not only maintains the current immigration rates, but under Trudeau has arbitrarily in-

creased it by 55,000 to 305,000 a year. Did Trudeau consult with the mayors of the GTA as to the effect this might have on all of the problems they are dealing with? The only thing I hear the GTA mayors ever say is that they need more money. When you have a growing population that presumably contributes to a growing tax base, but you need even more revenue than that provides, you have essentially defined a pyramid scheme. This so-called crisis could be ended next week, but no politician has the guts (or brains, it seems) to realize that the real problem is an addiction to never-ending growth and no regard to the negative effects that it brings. After a couple of late blasts of winter, spring is finally here, with summer just around the corner. It’s been a busy few months and we have lots on the go in Ward 5 and I would like to update you on what I have been working on. In Udora, we are still working on improving some unassumed roads when it comes to things like grading and signage. I have also been advocating for the resurfacing of Ravenshoe Road from Victoria Road over to Lakeridge Road. Keeping with our roads, I am looking forward to meeting with representatives from York Region, Durham Region, Town of Uxbridge and Georgina to discuss road safety issues, including sidewalks and speeds limits. One of the speed limits proposed to

DAVE HARDING Council Connection change is along portions of Pefferlaw Road. I continue to be an active member of two hall board committees, Udora and Port Bolster, working alongside the dedicated members who take pride in keeping these halls well maintained. And the hard work of our board members is paying off for another area in our ward, as Cookes Cemetery in Pefferlaw will have a new fence installed.

Please mark in your calendars for Tuesday, May 2 at 7 p.m. as there will be a Georgina council meeting taking place at the Pefferlaw Lions Community Hall. All town residents are encouraged to attend this informative meeting as there will be updates from a variety of areas. Items on the agenda will include a report from CN regarding the derailment and clean up, Station 1-8 reconstruction update as well as an update on the Pefferlaw Ice Pad (PIP). I would also like to remind everyone that our warmer spring temperatures are making for increased stream flows. Please use extra caution if you are by the water. 12 UREPORT

Original play takes stage at Keswick High RACHEL ARNOLD Over-the-top costumes, a rundown carnival and a soundtrack that was made for the Oscars are at the centre of Keswick High School’s spring production of The Greatest Show on Earth April 27 to 29. What is a Will?

What’s the difference between a Part I and a Part III offence? For starters a Part I offence is called an offence notice (ticket) and has an out of court settlement (fine) on it, whereas a Part III is a “Summons” (has a date on which you must attend court to answer to the charge(s)). Part I matters require you to request a court date (if you want to challenge the ticket), they are often minor offences and the court penalty is kept at a minimum. Court penalties for Part III offences are more severe and can involve licence suspensions, jail time, heavy fines etc. Some examples of a Part III offence include; Drive without Insurance, Drive Under Suspension, Racing, Fail to Remain at Accident, Speeding over 50 km/h and over. It is important to know your options…I always recommend that you take advantage of my FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION. When you want Professional Representation on traffic matters, call... A Will is a legal document created by an individual, called the Testator, which simply expresses how their estate should be managed and distributed after death. The Testator may choose one or more persons to act as estate trustee, and it is the Estate Trustee’s duty to see through the directions of the Will after the testator has passed away. If one dies without a Will, then the Ontario Succession Law Reform Act decides how the estate will be dispersed, instead of having a chosen individual instruct. There are many benefits to having a Will. Leaving specific possessions, such as jewellery or money, to certain individuals is an important benefit to some. Another benefit to a Will is having the ability to appoint a guardian if any minors are involved. Reducing the stress of loved ones is a priority for most, and a Will can be designed to help ease any confusion. A Will can also outline the testator’s wishes for funeral arrangements, the distribution regarding property, and as explained above, the appointment of a guardian. If you, or someone you know, would like to have a Will prepared, schedule a consultation with Donnell Law Group today to begin the process.

Is lemon water in the morning bad for my teeth? Many people often drink hot lemon water first thing in the morning. This helps to cleanse the digestive system, stimulate digestive enzymes and perhaps even assist with weight loss. Others enjoy eating or sucking lemon slices. Lemons and lemon juice is highly acidic. Over time, routine consumption of lemon juice will affect your tooth’s outer covering – the enamel. Erosion is the loss of tooth enamel, caused most commonly by acid attack. When the enamel is worn away, it exposes the underlying dentin (which is yellower in colour than enamel), and this may cause you to experience tooth sensitivity. Acidic foods and drinks can cause enamel erosion. As your enamel erodes it becomes thinner and this allows the yellower dentine that lies below the enamel to be more visible through the enamel. Your teeth may appear indented and yellower and they may also feel coarse to the tongue. The temperature of your water can make a difference to the effect of the lemon juice/water. The rate of chemical reactions increases with temperature and therefore erosion will be more severe at higher temperatures. You can further reduce risk by drinking the lemon water through a straw. Using a straw allows the fluid to bypass the teeth. After drinking the acidic lemon water, rinse your mouth with water straightaway. This removes any acid that may remain on the tooth surface and reduces the acidity of the oral saliva. Another option is to chew sugar-free gum after drinking the lemon water: This helps you produce more saliva, which helps neutralise the acidity in your mouth. DO NOT brush your teeth for at least 30 minutes after drinking the lemon water. Use a soft toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste (fluoride toughens your enamel) and do not brush aggressively. Why? Because acid softens enamel and makes it more prone to erosion during brushing. If you already have enamel erosion, consult with your dentist for further options.

What are some good TIPS FOR RUNNING?

Can my dog get ticks if he/she never leaves the yard?

1. STRETCH before and after running and target muscle groups used for running. Dynamic stretches in which you move through a range of motion should be done before running to warm up the muscles and increase circulation. Static stretches are done after a run to relax the muscle. 2. WALK BEFORE RUNNING - Walk easy for 1 minute, then briskly for 1-2 mins and repeat twice. 3. BUILD GRADUALLY - Start with a 2 min run/1 min walk and increase your distance by 10% each week. Recover between runs. Rest days are as important as running days. Vary the direction you run to avoid straining the same parts of your body especially if you’re running on a track. 4. DRINK FLUIDS - Get to know the best time for you to eat or drink to prevent cramps or nausea. 5. COOL DOWN with a relaxed walk for 5-10 mins which rids the metabolic wastes and excess fluid out of your muscles and allows your heart rate to slow down gradually. If you would like to prepare your body for running, require orthotics, or experience an injury, let the Team of Physiotherapists, Exercise Therapists, Chiropractor and Massage Therapists at Keswick and Sutton Physiotherapy manage all your needs!

Award April 12, 36 years after the tragic call that claimed his life in the line of duty. During an ice rescue call in Roches Point on March 25, 1981, then Fire Chief, Al Bush, along with his son, Randy, fell through the ice. Tragically, Randy died in the line of duty, trying to rescue the 71-year-old man. In recognition of Randy’s selfless actions, and with the approval of the entire Bush family, Jenkins was proud and honoured to announce the Randy Bush Commendation Award. It will be presented to civilians and emergency services personnel whose actions are deemed exemplary, placing themselves at significant risk while selflessly protecting others. "Randy’s commitment to our community and the safety of all residents and visitors to the Town of Georgina will never be forgotten," Jenkins said, before presenting a plaque to Bush and his wife, Ruby, surrounded by family, a packed council chambers, and row upon row of uniformed personnel. Following the emotional presentation, brothers Tristan, 16, and Tyler, 14, Reddy of Keswick received the first-ever award for their heroic efforts of Feb. 17, 2017. The teenagers are credited for saving their elderly neighbours from their burning Gwendolyn Avenue home after a dramatic rescue. "Without the boys actions, the outcome could have been and, in all likelihood, would have been much different," Jenkins said. "As the fire chief and as a community, we are very proud of your selfless actions that assisted in averting possible tragedy within our community," Jenkins added before Al Bush presented the first-ever com-

mendation award named in his son’s honour to the two teenagers. "We are so proud of Tristan and Tyler," said Randy’s sister, Karen Johnston, who attended the ceremony with her husband, Tom, their son and Central York firefighter T.J. and his wife, Alyssa, daughter, Alanna Yates and her husband, Eric, and their five-year-old son, Malcolm. Tax levy, federal funds to boost Internet access The town will put up $90,000 as part of an application for matching federal funds to bring high-speed Internet to rural areas in Georgina.

Council voted April 5 in favour of a tax levy budget allocation of $30,000 per year for each of 2018, 2019 and 2020 in hopes of a matching grant from the feds to support upgrades and additions to the town’s wireless broadband infrastructure.

That would address households and businesses in areas of Udora, Pefferlaw and Port Bolster identified as partially-serviced based on the town’s recent survey of Internet access and speed. The latest funding application piggybacks the Re-

gion of York’s application for $8 million under the federal government’s five-year, $500-million Connect to Innovate Fund. If approved, the region’s total $14-million program would expand its dark fibre network, allowing service

providers to offer "lastmile" connectivity to under-served areas in Whitchurch-Stouffville, King, East Gwillimbury, and Georgina by 2020. Since Georgina is the only municipality in the region to operate its own

broadband service, it is eligible to apply for a matching grant from the feds that would facilitate upgrades and connectivity once the fibre network is expanded. It is projected coverage would improve "significantly".

THE BIBLE’S CENTRAL THEME The last great chapter of the human story is unfolding before our eyes. Readers of the Bible know that the central main theme of both the Old and New Testaments is the Kingdom of God on earth. It was God’s intention right from the beginning, as recorded in Genesis 1, to create a perfect world. “Then God saw everything that he had made, and indeed it was very good”. Unfortunately, it did not take long for that idyllic situation to be spoilt by Adam and Eve and as a result of their disobedience, sin and death entered this perfect world. But God did not leave the situation like that, but immediately provided a way for his creation to become perfect again and that plan for man’s salvation is mapped out in his handbook – the Bible. God promised to Eve that one of her offspring (Jesus) would give sin a fatal blow of the head (Genesis 3:15). We are fast approaching that time when Jesus will return to begin to fulfil that prophecy made over six thousand years ago. Let us remember that it is God’s intention for “the earth to be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea”. Today is the day to prepare ourselves for that event - to repent (change) and believe the good news all outlined in the Bible. To help you with your study of God’s Word – the Bible – please write for our free magazine: “Light On A New World”.
