Simply being hooked up to hydro costs money even when energy is not being used. Those costs could be cut, however, should some of Ontario’s 60-plus utility companies merge. By having different companies running their own distribution systems, he said, it adds $1 billion in costs. “Through consolidation, you can remove those costs through efficiency gains,” he said. – with files from David Nickle

The cost to consumers is being hijacked by the drive for profit. “…Because of the way these new private power contracts are written, we are stuck paying guaranteed profit for power plants whether we need them or not,” said Peter Tabuns, NDP energy critic. “Right now, Ontario generates more power than we can use, about $2 billion a year worth of surplus power that we sell to Quebec and New York at a deep — 75 per cent — discount. In fact, many times we have to pay them to take our power.” Transparency on the government’s current energy contracts is also lacking, said Todd Smith, PC energy critic. “In my own riding of Prince Edward-Hastings, I’ve watched power companies ask for and get

Famous

Lucy Maud Montgomery

You go to the drug store or to your doctor and get pills to help relieve your pain, but you find your pain keeps coming back.

An enduring tale from the Island

You are likely frustrated by having to suffer with the come and go pain but may also be concerned on your dependency on the pain pills… and that they may be giving you side effects. You may have heard that there are serious health risks associated with chronic use (or overuse) of pain pills that include damage to the liver, kidneys and gut.

Lucy Maud Montgomery, the Canadian author who penned a beloved series of novels that began with Anne of Green Gables, was born in Prince Edward Island Nov. 30, 1874. The novel, her most famous, was written in 1905 and rejected several times before publication in 1908. It marked the beginning of a successful literary career. Since its publication, Anne of Green Gables has sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into 20 languages.

Although the pain killing drugs are designed to numb the pain they do not address the underlying causes of the pain. There is a new, natural, safe and highly effective approach that has helped many sufferers improve their lives dramatically: Laser therapy uses light to favor and accelerate the body’s natural healing processes. The innovative Multiwave Locked System (MLS) Laser produces a safe, efficient and simultaneous effect on pain, inflammation, swelling and water retention, exceeding the limits of traditional LLLT (Low power) and concerns of HP (High power) laser therapy.

What does this mean for you? Our patients have reported a 90-95% relief of their symptoms, more mobility, increased flexibility and vastly improved function! It is the very latest in medical technology, with years of clinical studies supporting its safety and efficacy, and we are very proud to offer our patients effective solutions to their recent or chronic conditions.

Eighty-seven per cent of OECTA members voted in favour of extending the current contract between the association, Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association, and the Ontario Government TERESA LATCHFORD tlatchford@yrmg.com The Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association has agreed to extend its 2014-17 collective agreement. Eighty-seven per cent of OECTA members voted in favour of extending the current contract between the association, Ontario

Catholic School Trustees’ Association, and the Ontario government. "Our bargaining team believed this agreement was in the best interests of Catholic teachers and their students," OECTA president Ann Hawkins said. "The additional staffing provided in the extension agreement will help to address a number of concerns

that we have heard from our members, such as violence in the classroom and more dedicated support for at-risk students or those with special education needs." The stability will allow staff to focus on education. Three local bargaining units are still working out local terms for the extension.

EDITORIAL | OPINION

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

Masking true cost of hydro won’t fix broken system Our hydro bills may be going down this summer, but don’t pop the bubbly just yet. While Ontario residents will see an average 25 per cent reduction on the bottom line, what they won’t see is what it’s going to cost future generations and the current structural inefficiencies and ongoing bad planning that make electricity expensive for us in the first place. Premier Kathleen Wynne announced the savings this month saying it was the fair thing to do. She heard from families struggling with their bills and struggling to understand why rates have skyrocketed. Unfortunately, because the history of hydro and its mismanagement is such a long and complicated one, politicians looking to distract would-be voters benefit from its current complexity. People don’t get it and don’t have the time, the comprehension or the willingness to figure it out. What they do get is how hard it is to pay a huge bill. So Wynne’s Liberals are waving a shiny 25 per cent hydro cut over here, while over there, our expensive hydro system continues to plod along. The lower bills come from refinancing the term of payment the province owes to private power providers - from 20 years to 30. So we’re deferring costs to future generations in order to get some immediate relief. And we’re incurring about $25 billion in extra interest charges over that time. Additional relief will be coming through low-income and rural subsidy programs, but that too comes at a cost of $2.5 billion over the next three years charged to Ontario’s treasury and taxpayers. As tempting as it is to celebrate lower bills, with an election year in 2018, we need to hold all parties to account to do more than float distractions. Ontario generates more power than it knows what to do with and we’re forced to sell it to our neighbours at a discounted rate. Sometimes we have to pay for them to take it. The sale of Hydro One has locked us into guaranteed contracts with private power providers whether we need that power or not. There’s little transparency as to the details of private contracts and that takes accountability right out of the system. We need a comprehensive plan and a system overhaul. Keep that in mind when you’re told to celebrate your June power bill. It’s not nearly enough.

Trudeau promised 2015 would be the last first-pastthe-post election. Proportional representation means the party that gets 30 per cent of the votes should get 30 per cent of the seats like in New Zealand and Germany. Polls show 70 per cent of Canadians agree. So what happened? Canada is 131st among democracies in voter turnout. Our young voters particularly are becoming more disengaged and cynical. Lots to worry about at home Reading a recent issue, I came to the conclusion that your staff is positive that we little people are in shock from the fact that the leader of a foreign country is doing exactly what he promised to do if elected.

But why would we worry about this? Our elected leader already has broken virtually all his promises, so it’s business as usual here in Canada. On the other hand, we’ve got a lot of other things to worry about: skyrocketing costs of virtually everything led by housing and energy, new carbon taxes, rationed and deteriorating healthcare, falling grades of students in math, GTA-wide traffic gridlock, inadequate public transit, business over regulation... And how about the fact that every newborn baby in Ontario gets "rewarded" with $40K of federal and provincial debt? So do you still think that we have nothing to worry about but Trump? Dapper Koala Buster Moon presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times. An eternal optimist, and a bit of a scoundrel, he loves his theatre above all and will do anything to preserve it. Facing the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he takes one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition. Five contestants emerge: a mouse, a timid elephant, a pig, a gorilla and a punk-rock porcupine. Bring a cozy chair and some nut-free snacks and enjoy the movie!

Dalton Road The Regional Municipality of York (York Region) is constructing a watermain along Dalton Road from Lake Drive East to Baseline Road in the Town of Georgina. Dalton Road watermain construction is underway. Twoway traffic will remain open, however, delays are to be expected. Visit georgina.ca/dalton-road-construction to read our Frequently Asked Questions and learn more about this project.

Load Restrictions on Town Roads March 1 to May 15 Every spring, between March 1 and May 15, there is a load restriction to 5 tonnes per axel on Town roads. The reason for the load restriction is that with the warmer weather, the roads become soft and those travelling with loads larger than the limit could potentially cause damage to our roads. For more information, please call 905-476-4301 ext. 2232 or visit the Spring Load Restrictions webpage on georgina.ca

in a news release. ". We are widening the dialogue to invite youth to be a part of the conversation by attending the Youth Forums either on site or online, for free. This is their opportunity to speak up and help shape the future of Canada!" Each forum will have a different theme: the Vancouver forum centres on the environment, the Mon-

Those taking part will have a shot at being among representatives chosen to form a leadership group of 150 young people who will travel to Ottawa June 26 to July 2.

That group will work as volunteers on Canada 150 events throughout the week, as well as formally report on their discussions to the Governor General of Canada and business and community leaders at the National Youth Forum June 28. THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS – THE CHRISTIAN FOUNDATION The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is the foundation stone upon which the whole Christian message is built, and it was the basis of the teachings of all the apostles. To deny the resurrection is to overturn the Gospel, for without it there is no hope: “For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised; and if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; you are yet in your sins” (1 Corinthians 15: 14-18). Jesus said: “I am the resurrection and the life”. By that statement, Jesus promises resurrection to all his followers who die before his return from heaven. He was the “first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep”. First-fruits depicts a following harvest. Thus, all believers of Jesus who have died over the centuries had confidence that they will experience a resurrection from the dead, at his appearing. We read in the last few verses of 1 Corinthians 15 these well-known words: “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump; for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed....Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?...But thanks be to God, which gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ”. Yes, we can believe confidently in the fact that our Lord Jesus has risen and our faith in him and in his return as King over the earth is not in vain. Crews from as far away as Buffalo assisted with derailment cleanup HEIDI RIEDNER hriedner@yrmg.com While CN Rail continued its massive round-theclock cleanup and investigation into the cause of Sunday’s train derailment in the heart of Pefferlaw, the 3 a.m. accident was a scary wake-up call for Georgina residents who have been concerned over the issue of rail safety for years. "It’s scary," Lew Smith, who lives directly beside the tracks, said, echoing the sentiments of many Pefferlaw residents, adding the train could have come right through his house had it been travelling the other way. CN spokesperson Patrick Waldron said Monday, however, "there were no injuries, no dangerous goods involved or threat to the environment or public safety," regarding the 14 rail cars on a southbound freight train that jumped the track at the main intersection at Pefferlaw and Station roads March 5. Thankful that no hazardous materials were involved in the accident, mom Kristin Burrill was still overwhelmed at the

"It’s kind of scary that it’s so close to home," said Burrill. "I’ve been kind of expecting this to happen," John Bacon said. "I’ve lived here 14 years and I know they (CN) are always working here. I worry about my friend who lives next door. It’s concerning." Waldron, however, cautioned against any speculation as to whether fac-

tors such as maintenance, switches or speed were factors in the accident before the investigation is complete. He also said there were no threats to public safety or the environment regarding the green powderlike substance that spilled from two of the damaged cars. Waldron confirmed copper concentrate - a byproduct once copper ore has been mined and milled and used in the production of copper metal ?- did spill

to remove rail cars and rebuild the damaged track. Most of the 80-plus-car train was moved immediately after the accident. Impressed by the well co-ordinated emergency response, including firefighters going door-todoor in the area to apprise residents of the situation, some still raised the issue of public safety concerning the CN track running approximately 18 trains per day transporting goods between Winnipeg and Toronto, as well as a propane

tank located in close proximity to the intersection used to heat the railroad switch. At a public meeting regarding rail safety and emergency response in May 2015, the tank’s removal was at the forefront of the many issues raised. That has also been the subject of Pefferlaw resident John Myette’s threeyear battle with CN and Transport Canada since it is "a disastrous accident waiting to happen," in his opinion.
