Cops, firemen compete in Gathering Wee bit of hijinks expected at Saturday strength competition BY HEIDI RIEDNER

hriedner@yrmg.com

A wee bit of Highland hijinks will ensue, pitting police officers against firefighters, in what could be called a tournament of Scots in Georgina. See some of the region’s finest square off in tests of strength while wearing kilts during the annual Georgina Highland Gathering Saturday at the Sutton fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. OK, they probably won’t be wearing kilts this weekend, but members of York Regional Police will compete against members of Georgina’s fire department in an ‘ultimate Highlander’ face-off for charity. Five-member teams will compete in events including the Scottish hammer, stone throw and caber toss. The winning team will receive $500 to donate to the charity of its choice. This year, an annual award has been created in memory of retired York Regional Police Staff Sergeant Bob Whitman, who lost his battle with cancer on Jan. 26, 2011, says Const. Blair McQuillan of York Regional Police. Mr. Whitman competed extensively in heavy events throughout his lifetime and an award will be See page 8.

Mary and Don Baker check out one of the potential sites of a pedestrian bridge over the Maskinonge River in Keswick. The Riverglen Drive residents aren’t happy and registered their complaints during the second of three public meetings at the ROC June 12 hosted by the town gauging public response to the idea.

Pedestrian bridge ‘insane’ idea, residents say BY HEIDI RIEDNER

A pedestrian bridge over the river Maskinonge is an idea gone too far, according to some area residents. “It’s insane,” said Don Baker, one of about 50 people who attended the second of three public meetings June 12 at the ROC being hosted by the town obtaining resident input. He characterized the meeting as “hell hath no fury like a whole town scorned”. “There were no ifs, ands or buts about it,” said Mr. Baker. “They don’t want the bridge.”

He and his wife, Mary, who have lived on Riverglen Road for almost two decades, oppose the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the Maskinonge River between Riverglen and Riveredge roads in Keswick for a number of reasons. Vandalism, environmental damage to the river and its wetland species, safety, liability issues and no substantial benefits are just some of the long list of reasons the Bakers are not in favour of the idea. Cost is another big factor. “I don’t see a use for it and, the way I see it,

it is a huge waste our town’s time and our tax dollars,” said Mrs. Baker. Ward 2 Councillor Phil Craig agreed the public meeting was “loud” and the message received was a resounding no to the project. “It was very clear they view the project in a negative fashion,” he said, but added, as of Thursday, he was starting to receive positive response from others. “We want to ensure we hear from everyone on the issue before making any decision.”
