The fourth phase of the town’s smoking ban received only two of three readings at council Monday night to allow town staff to include designated smoking areas to the final draft of the bylaw.

Mayor Rob Grossi and Ward 2 Councillor Phil Craig were prepared to stick to their non-smoking guns and eliminate smoking on all town properties.

The strategy to return savings realized from a three-month strike via two months of free public transit netted the desired results, York Region Transit/Viva general manager Richard Leary told the region’s transportation services committee yesterday.

Ridership for April, the first month when customers were

required to resume paying fares, reached 1.76 million, a 1.4 per cent increase compared to April 2011.

Committee, which, in December, authorized the tact to repay taxpayers, was encouraged with the extra 24,400 fare-paying riders in April. Mr. Leary, while “very pleased,” was guarded, suggesting last year’s strike-free ridership projections for the same period

traffic,” said Councillor Szollosy, responding to survey results and input from Civic Centre staff regarding the total ban on smoking on all town properties.

Comments from town staff included in a report to council Monday referred to safety issues if staff members would be required to trudge out to Civic Centre Road for a butt under the town’s bylaw in its final form.

“I am particularly sensitive to the concerns expressed in some of the reports about dangerous situations, specifically here at the civic centre, if we force people out to the road, which is a high traffic, high speed road basically, with no sidewalk areas.”

A situation that is similar to many halls in Georgina that have no sidewalks or adequate buffers between smokers and travelling vehicles.

While supportive of the town’s bylaw, comments from community hall boards in Udora, Port Bolster, Egypt and Belhaven recommended that each hall be able to designate their own smoking area that works for their location.

“The risk of having people, patrons, guests, etc, stepping out onto the road — for that consideration alone — I am sympathetic,” said Councillor Szollosy.

Providing such spots would also address concerns raised over compliance, according to Councillor Szollosy.

“It seems to be a fair consensus that with a designated area, you’ll probably have a much higher percentage of compliance with the bylaw,”

Referring to an area adjacent to the town’s tennis courts that has become the “de facto” smoking area with parents abiding by the smoking ban on soccer pitches, Councillor Szollosy agreed with Councillor Smockum that smokers

will continue to smoke and said “without direction, people will define their spot. We need to define it for them”.

But the town’s youth engagement committee was in full support of a smoke-free Georgina.

Committee representatives Samantha Caissie and Sara Cote made a deputation to council armed with statistics and a jar of 2,000 cigarette butts they collected within a one-hour span, stating butts were not only “gross” but harmful to the environment.

Referring to the more than 4,000 chemicals present in cigarettes and the harmful effects of third-hand smoke present on clothing and hair, Miss Cote said implementing the fourth phase of the bylaw would be a “huge step forward” and “set an example” for other areas.

Committee volunteers distributed surveys to 1,000 people, with 82 per cent of respondents supporting the town’s recent initiative.

Mayor Grossi said the town wants to do the right thing, engage as many people as possible in the process and referred to the deputation as a “huge statement on behalf of youth in our community”.

Council had been prepared to pass the bylaw and add the site specific exemptions when compiled, however, Deputy Mayor Danny Wheeler suggested staff return back with a full list of sites that would have designated smoking areas before final approval.

A debated smoking ambassador at a cost of $5,000 to educate, promote awareness and attend town functions to explain the town’s nonsmoking initiatives was also given the go ahead.

he best way to end the Ontario school system’s reliance on fundraising is to pour more money into public education, parents, teachers and critics say.

“We are getting increasingly (to be) a two-tiered education system,” NDP education critic Peter Tabuns said. “That speaks to the need for adequate funding of the education system so parents don’t feel compelled to raise money.”

Fundraising Fever, a Metroland Special Report, shows that concerns about overuse of fundraising — and the disparities it creates — are growing provincewide.

Potential solutions also include a proposal by the advocacy group, People for Education, which wants a provincial Equity in Education grant created to reduce inequities triggered by fundraising. School boards are pushing for an evaluation of provincial education funding to determine if the current model is fair to all students.

“The pressure to fundraise will only grow as boards try to meet the austerity measures of provincial governments,” said Catherine Fife, president of the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association.

“We can’t go to our parent councils or school councils and keep asking for money.”

There’s no question money is tight. The McGuinty government is starting consultations this fall to cut $10 million from school board administration budgets by 2013-14.

There is a lot of waste in the system and boards don’t always spend their funding appropriately, Progressive Conservative education critic Lisa MacLeod said.

“They’ll claim they have no money, but are they managing the money effectively?” she said.

Some groups, including Social Planning Toronto, believe fundraising should be banned outright, except for raising dollars for external charities.

“I’d rather not have it,” said Chris Ellis, who sits on four school councils in Ottawa. “I’d like for schools to not be able to raise funds for their own use so then parents in those affluent areas might become involved and speak up for greater funding for the edu-

cation system.”

The Coalition Against Public School Inequality suggested a cap on school fundraising. A percentage of each school’s profits, above and beyond the limit, would go into an equalization fund to help disadvantaged schools.

But the Ontario Federation of Home and School Associations stated a limit would be too restrictive.

“We actually don’t want somebody to say you have to stop here.

It’s up to the parents to decide how much they want to do or whether they’ve had enough,” group president Lee Gowers said.

Raising property taxes would be a controversial solution, but “that’s how you address inequity, unpopularly, through taxes,” said Annie Kidder, executive director of People for Education. “At some point, we have to bite the bullet

and go, ‘That’s what taxes pay for.’

If we want our kids to have books in their libraries, we have to pay taxes.”

Critics say the province should outline exactly what materials, activities and programs should be available — at no cost to parents — in all Ontario schools. Currently, it is OK to raise funds for library books, gym equipment and musical instruments.

“You need to start with the policy and the vision and laying out concretely what should be there in schools,” Ms Kidder said.

“Then you start talking about how you fund it to ensure it’s fair and equitable.”

There is also interest in a boardwide mentorship program where successful fundraising schools partner with those that need a hand, helping to reduce the gap in funds raised.

“To me, that’s how successful fundraising can be done, really sharing the best practices,” said parent Roxanne Horwitz, who sits on the St. Bernadette Catholic School council in Ajax.

Education foundations across the province continue to play a role, helping to reduce inequities in opportunity between well-off and disadvantaged schools. There is no severe pressure on schools to raise funds for things like field trips because many foundations will cover those costs.

“Having a central education foundation completely changes the landscape for children in a city,” said Jane Fulton, executive director of the Education Foundation of Ottawa.

“We make sure that no student is left out.”

bridge the gap by providing donations and incentive programs.

“That’s what we are counting on, businesses in the community,” said Luce Paradis, principal at Assumption Catholic School in Ottawa.

The school is in a low-income area and doesn’t usually host fundraisers. Without corporate donations, it wouldn’t be able to reach its goal of $50,000 for a new play structure.

“We have to outsource a little bit.” A number of companies such as Chapters, Boston Pizza and McDonald’s host special events that encourage parents to purchase their products and then give a portion of sales back to schools.

Others, such as the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, believe businesses don’t belong in public schools.

It’s only fun till someone blows the whistle

Traffic hazard or rite of passage?

The answer could be both when it comes to kids playing sports on the street, but it only becomes an issue in Georgina when someone blows the whistle on them.

A complaint filed with the town against kids playing basketball on a Keswick street prompted a roundtable discussion at Georgina council June 11, but it did not result in any change to existing bylaws making street sports illegal.

Georgina shares similar practices to many other municipalities that restrict playing any game or sport on any roadway.

Enforcement is discretionary, generally complaint driven and contained within the traffic and parking control bylaw.

Matters are usually addressed by way of written or verbal warnings and charges seldom occur, however, if required, the bylaw does allow for further enforcement, if necessary.

“Ticketing is a last resort and seldom occurs, but it is an option,” said municipal law enforcement officer Ryan Cronsberry, adding the department is “not looking to give kids a hard time”.

At the same time, however, he said the bylaw is there to help bylaw officers when they need it.

While council said the matter was resolved satisfactorily according to the parties involved, was an isolated incident and did not require changes to the town’s bylaw, Keswick resident Jamie Kerr thinks receiving an order to remove his basketball net from a low-traffic side street is “ridiculous” and “sad”.

‘Just allow kids to continue to do what they’ve been doing for as long as anyone can remember.’

“The original complaint letter must include an actual concern for the town to react so harshly regarding something that has gone on for decades and decades in our society (kids playing sports on a side street with 28 houses and minimal traffic),” he wrote to town staff back in April, after being ordered to remove his basketball net from a grass boulevard on Joliette Place.

“Why should a complaint from

one Georgina resident overrule the voices of many?”

He asked the town to reconsider the order issued and allow children to play sports on what he called a “tiny side street”, especially since there are many other nets throughout similar Keswick neighbourhoods.

“In an era where we find it difficult to get our children to exercise and or get off the TV/video games, we should be doing everything in our power to encourage exercise/ sports; not discourage it by making us move a basketball net that is not even on the road,” he said.

Similar skirmishes over the issue of road hockey have broken out in

areas such as Newmarket, where residents proposed ways to work with the town’s road hockey bylaw this past November suggesting guidelines with several check points to allow the games to continue.

Newmarket teens had also been going door-to-door asking residents for support in banishing the town’s road hockey bylaw, but to date nothing has been filed with town.

Toronto is also considering road hockey exemptions for certain lowtraffic streets this month.

Kingston is one of the few cities that permits ball hockey between the hours of 9 a.m. and 8 p.m., but only on roads where the speed limit is less than 50 kilometres per hour.

Parents or guardians who allow their children to participate in street hockey assume all risks related to the activity, states a report tabled to council June 11.

Despite current bylaw regulations prohibiting the placement of sports equipment on town roads and road allowances, these activities do occur in Georgina the report further states, usually without incident or complaint.

Council addressed the situation after the complaint was lodged, however, it had no interest in mak-

ing a mountain out of an isolated mole hill.

As long as Georgina goes the route of saying that ticketing is the last thing it will do, trying instead to resolve and settle disputes in a conciliatory fashion, said Ward 2 Councillor Phil Craig, then “I think we are heading in the right direction”.

“While Mr Kerr moved the basketball net of his own volition during the month-long stand-off, he wasn’t happy with what he called the town’s “move it or else” attitude, while he did commend Councillor Craig for trying to look into the situation.

As of this week, there is no order against Mr. Kerr.

While he likes the Kingston model addressing street sports, he said he understands why the town won’t change its current bylaw.

His point remains, however, that as long as people are being respectful, use common sense and aren’t out destroying property, the longstanding practice should continue.

“Just allow kids to continue to do what they’ve been doing for as long as anyone can remember,” he said.

Baring a surge in complaints, the town won’t change up the rule book when it comes to road sports any time soon.

Stop complaining, street games should be allowed, encouraged

W

e know our children are getting fat.

Study after study proves one in four Canadian youth are overweight or obese and it’s on the rise. Parents are being told to get their kids off the couch and outside to play active games; games that exercise their muscles and increase their heart rates. Games that make them sweat and make them thirsty and make them smarter.

Yes, several recent studies have even found children who are more fit are also smarter.

Studies across North America have found just 20 minutes of walking before a school test raised children’s test scores, even if the children were otherwise unfit or overweight.

Makes sense.

That’s why it’s frustrating and even maddening when neighbours complain about kids playing basketball, hockey, hopscotch or any other outdoor activity on their street.

These people need to stop playing citizen cop and try to understand what it is like to be a young person today.

Towns, such as Georgina, should be allowing and even encouraging safe sports games on residential streets.

Yes, town bylaws are enacted and enforced for the betterment of our communities: we all understand that.

But if a group of kids is playing respectfully and safely, let them be, for goodness sakes.

If bylaws need to be tweaked, then so be it.

That’s not to say it’s OK to tell children to run out on to busy roads without regard for the safety of themselves or others, but a good old-fashioned street hockey game or shooting hoops on residential streets are phenomenal ways to have fun, get fit, join others in a team setting and forge friendships.

These types of healthy activities create memories of closeknit neighbourhoods, community involvement and ownership.

This newspaper received several complaints from parents earlier this year about the

fact police broke up ball hockey games on their Keswick street and one parent wrote to the town last week after a bylaw officer — acting on a neighbour’s complaint — forced him to remove a basketball net off the street.

Parent Jamie Kerr admittedly “dug in his heels” on the matter because he just couldn’t believe the town would force his two sons to remove their net, which was on the grass beside the roadway, while they shot hoops after school.

“In an era where we find it difficult to get our children to exercise and or get off the TV/video games, we should be doing everything in our power to encourage exercise/sports; not discourage it by making us move a basketball net that is not even on the road,” he said in an e-mail.

Agreed.

But until the town realizes its bylaw in this matter needs amending, it has no choice but to act on complaints from neighbours even if it is of the most trivial and petty variety. The entire bylaw enforcement runs solely on a complaint basis.

It’s complainers who need to rethink why this is such a problem for them. Is a bit of noise or being forced to slow down during a few months of the year really such an incredible hardship?

What is there, after all, for children to do in Georgina other than organized sports that are cost prohibitive for many families?

Not a whole lot, if you talk to kids.

A Stats Canada 2011 health profile shows less than half of York’s population — 46.3 per cent — is even moderately active and a whopping 45.6 per cent of York residents are overweight or obese.

Healthyork is a new initiative instigated this year to provide partnership opportunities for public health units and communities to work together to build policies and programs to promote a culture of health and well-being. Well, here’s one inexpensive way to accomplish some of these goals.

Stop complaining.

Who really owns historic Court House?

Re: Community divided over townhouse plan on lake, May 31.

At the May 28 public meeting to review the Briarwood Estates application for Jackson’s Point Cottages, it was clear few residents viewed favourably a proposal for a subdivision of townhouses.

Thankfully, staff planners seem to agree, citing reservations about the scale and density of the proposal and stating perhaps the “mediumdensity” zoning proposed in the 2010 town plan is not appropriate for this lakeside location beside a significant watershed.

Residents seem most concerned with long-standing problems on the subject lands.

In response to these issues, Mayor Rob Grossi asked why current bylaws dealing with the noise, parking, etc. were

not being enforced.

I am compelled to ask why, in fact, is the zoning of the property not being enforced?

It cannot have evaded the town’s notice that the use of this tourist-commercial zoned property has largely been changed to residential.

And, in light of the history of this particular property, could not the town, through the enforcement of the zoning, resolve those very problems?

Instead, something quite different is happening.

It would seem residents’ desire to have this site cleaned up is being used as the “carrot” to accept development that would otherwise never be considered.

In response to a question about water access for residents of the proposed new development, it was confirmed the town had somehow “acquired” the waterfront across the street from Jackson’s Point Cottages to re-situate the restored Courting House.

The surrounding land

was rehabilitated with large boulders ensuring no trees will spring up to mar the now unimpeded lake view.

Although the town plaque indicates this is an historic site, on June 10, the owner added a lengthy dock to the front of the Courting House, stating to passersby, “This waterfront has belonged to the property for 200 years.”

Jackson’s Point Cottages residents proceeded to take over both the Courting House and the dock for their own use.

Certainly no tourist would feel comfortable stopping by.

Is it normal practice for this town to spend taxpayers’ money on a site improvement that benefits a private land owner?

Or, if the Courting House is a publicly owned historic site, is it normal practice for private individuals to expropriate public property for their own use? This is a most unusual situation.

Environmental leaders of tomorrow were honoured by the Town of Georgina Monday night.

Presentations were made to Riley Woolley, Kiera Kingsley and Olivia Williams, who represented their Lake Simcoe Public School Grade 1 class that won the Steward of the Earth contest for planting the most trees.

With the support of local businesses and political figures, 500 school children in Georgina recently participated in the 2012 Steward of the Earth program, a nationally registered non-profit charity that not only provides seedlings for future trees, but also hopes to foster the seeds of environmentalism in future generations.

Since the program’s inception in 2008, more than 3,000 seedlings have been provided to Georgina area school children.

Grade 1 to 4 students at Prince of Peace CES, Lake Simcoe Public School and Fairwood Public School in Keswick were provided the opportunity to plant and nurture their very own tree between April 30 and May 4.

Students received their prizes Tuesday in their individual schools, however, the Lake Simcoe Public School students were able to attend a ceremony at council chambers Monday night, where their teacher, Ashlee Ponting, was also recognized.

Since the program’s inception in 2008, more than 3,000 seedlings have been provided to Georgina area school children.

Steward of the Earth has partnered with more than 50 community-based businesses and put trees into the hands of more than 15,000 school children throughout the region and across the province since the program’s inception.

“We applaud Mayor Rob Grossi and the Town of Georgina for declaring Steward of the Earth Day again this year, and their willingness to recognize local school kids at their council meeting this evening,” said SOTE chairperson, Peter Seemann.

“The Town of Georgina’s continued support of the SOTE program gives our organization the ability to unite local stakeholders around a common cause and, in doing so, gives these students the support they need to be the environmental leaders of tomorrow.”

Aside from recognizing student and teacher representatives from each participating school, local sponsors to the program were also recognized for their support.

Keswick’s Georgina Garden Centre, Cedarvale Lodge and Pipe and Slipper Home, as well as York-Simcoe MPP Julia Munro and Farmer Jack’s Gardens of Queensville all made contributions to support the presentations in local area schools this spring.

It is thanks to the dedication and commitment of these kind supporters that makes the Steward of the Earth program possible each year, added Mr. Seemann.

The free rides also enticed residents, many for the first time, to try public transport.

The affable transplanted Bostonian and former chief operating officer of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority reiterated his commitment to staying the course, service enhancements and cost containment.

“We projected an 8 per cent increase for April and were limited to 1.4 per cent,” he said. “We didn’t lose our (ridership) base, but our growth was reduced,” he said.

To counter the growth slide there’s the potential for fare increases in future, Mr. Leary hinted, adding he has been working with corporate finance to “see what might be necessary in 2013.”

YRT/Viva’s challenges are not any different from that of any other North American transportation supplier, he said.

“Our biggest challenge is getting ridership back to where it should be,” he said. “What do we want to look like in the future?”

Some tough decisions await, Mr. Leary admitted.

“I don’t use the words reduce or cut,” he said. “I prefer the term modify.”

As such, on the drawing board are balancing subsidized fares which range from $40 to zero per rider.

YRT/Viva’s 122 routes and varying schedules will be reviewed to make sure more fare boxes actually pay for service. Forty foot buses may replace the more costly 60 footers on certain roads in an effort to save $50,000 in 2013. An anti-idling program will save $250,000 in fuel next year. Also planned as part of a $3.08 million savings in 2013 are route integration and fewer deadhead community and Mobility Plus bus hours where vehicles must travel empty from a service yard to the start of its route.

Mr. Leary is also working with transport contractors to have them pay for and improve the mean distance between mechanical failures which can negatively impact on time performance and missed trips.

It’s too soon to determine if the positive ridership trend will continue, Mr. Leary said. Nonetheless, after committee lauded the YRT/Viva’s recovery from the work stoppage Vaughan Regional Councillor Deb Schulte praised the eight weeks of free rides. “It was well done and well handled and it was the right thing to do,” she said.

Water and sewer servicing capacity and sufficient road capacity is now available for the subject 56 units therefore the Holding symbol can be removed from the zoning on said lands. The removal of the holding symbol “H” would facilitate the development of the 56 lots in conformity with the approved draft plan, and in accordance with the approved zoning.

In accordance with Section 36 of the Planning Act, the Town is required to give notice of its intention to pass the amending by-law to remove the holding symbol “H”, however, there are no third party rights of appeal on the removal thereof.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC CONSULTATION CENTRE #2 CLASS ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT STUDY FOR SUTTON WATER SERVICING IN THE TOWN OF GEORGINA The Regional Municipality of York (York Region) is planning to expand the existing Regional water system in the community of Sutton, in the Town of Georgina. The existing Regional watermain on Metro Road North will be extended into the community of Sutton (the Project). The current study area for this Project is shown below.

York Region initiated a Class Environmental Assessment study (Class EA) for this Project under Schedule B of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment document (October 2000, as amended in 2011) in March 2011. A Notice of Study Commencement inviting initial public input was published in March/April, 2011 and the first Public Consultation Centre was held on May 10, 2011.

Consultation with, and input from the public and government review agencies is a vital component of the Class EA. Members of the public and review agencies are invited to provide comment for incorporation into the overall planning and preliminary design of the Project.

As part of the Class EA process, York Region will be hosting a second Public Consultation Centre on the Project to present engineering and environmental information on the study, including existing conditions, an evaluation of alternative solutions and recommended solution, to engage residents and stakeholders on the key issues. All those with an interest in the Project are invited to attend.

The Public Consultation Centre will be held: Tuesday, June 26, 2012 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

an area especially for the kids, where their high energy levels won’t bother the other guests and where they can be free from pressures to sit still and be quiet.

Is there going to be a crowd of children at your wedding?

Here are a few entertainment tips to keep them amused during the reception; their parents will appreciate the opportunity to socialize and the kids will remember the event as a success.

If you do have a kids’ table, cover it with a paper tablecloth on which they can doodle to their heart’s content while they wait for their meals.

Don’t forget to inquire with your caterer if their menu includes a children’s plate. Then, at the end of the meal, distribute surprise bags filled with candies and small dollar-store games or gadgets that will keep them entertained.

To occupy younger children before the meal, you could organize a visit from a magician or a clown, who can perform a colourful routine lasting around thirty minutes. Georgina sets example for other towns

Georgina is setting the example for other municipalities when it comes to promoting organ donation, says the founder of the local Gift of Life Association.

“We are so pleased with the outcome of the meeting,” says Keswick resident and founder of the York Region chapter of the association, who made a deputation to council Monday night along with her sister, Heather Higgins, seeking town support for organ donation awareness and online registration.

As a result of their presentation, Georgina will be the first municipality in the region to post the BeADonor.ca website link on its town website.

“By doing so, they are setting an important example for other towns and cities in York Region to follow,” she added.

Ms Van Veen spearheaded the creation of the York chapter launched April 20 as part of a kickoff to National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week.

In just a few short months, the association has raised the profile of organ donation, garnered significant attention and has successfully

lobbied other organizations to provide links to the online donor registry on their respective websites, including five area hospitals, York Regional Police and media organization yorkregion.com.

The Trillium Gift of Life Network encourages people to register through the BeADonor online site as a more effective way to ensure their wishes of organ donation are carried out.

Online registration is encouraged because consent is directly linked to a person’s health card and prevents any uncertainty for the family. With evidence of their loved ones’ registered consent, almost all families honour the donation decision, she said. In the absence of registered consent, only 50 per cent of families provide consent.

According to recent figures, there are 1,500 people on waiting lists for organs.

“Every three days one person dies because an organ is not available,” Ms Higgins informed council members.

“It only takes three minutes to register and one registered donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and enhance 75 more through tissue donation,” Ms Van Veen added.

While 23 per cent of Georgina residents have already consented to organ donation, higher than the regional average of 18 per cent, the group hopes to raise the rate to 50 per cent in the 180+ communities across the province.

Ms Van Veen explained to council members she was inspired to create the York chapter of the association after her father, Malcolm Higgins, suffered a critical brain injury in a 2010 auto accident.

Describing her dad as a paralegal by day and AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson double by night, Ms Van Veen said her father was definitely a “colourful character”.

“Yes, my dad was a rock star. He sounded exactly like Brian Johnson, although I might be biased.”

His death left family members wondering how they would “navigate life without dad”.

But she knew donating her father’s organs meant the family was honouring his wishes and that single, generous act would save other lives.

She says a thank you letter to the family from the recipient of her father’s donated lungs made her proud, knowing it meant a restored quality of life for the recipient, but also for driving home another more personal fact.

“It made evident what we knew all along. My dad had a lot of life left in him,” she said.

In addition to adding the donor link on its website, the town would look into adding the information on its town page in the Advocate for the next two months.

Chalk up another title for Cody Ward.

The Keswick resident outlasted Quebec’s Charles Guimont 11-8 on Sunday to complete a sweep of five matches to capture the Canadian Billiard and Snooker Association junior 9-ball title in North York.

Ward, 17, bested a field of 10 competitors to capture the title to go along with the Canadian Cue Sport crown he captured in March in Missis-

sauga.

The victory earned Ward a championship ring and berth in the the World Pool-Billiard Association junior championships scheduled to be held in Dubai in September.

“I didn’t play my best but it was good enough to win it,” said Ward. “There were better players in this one although a lot of the same guys, too. I knew I’d been practising a lot and getting better. I wanted it so bad, I just tried my hardest and see what happens.”

The victory follows his triumph at the Canadian Cue Sport Association tournament

WHAT IS THE KINGDOM OF GOD? In the past the Kingdom of God first came about in the day’s of Saul, around 1000 B.C. Saul was hand picked by God to reign over His Kingdom, Israel. Saul lost the kingship because he would not follow God’s commands. A new king was found By God to rule over Israel in the person of David the son of Jesse. David was different because we are told he was a “man after God’s own heart.” Act 13:22 Approximately 400 years passed before the Kingdom was lost because of disobedience of David’s decedents, the last king being Zedekiah. God promised David that his offspring would inherit God’s kingdom again and this time it would be forever. David’s descendent was Jesus Christ. Mathew 1:1, Acts 13:23 Jesus Christ having been risen from the dead because there was no sin found in him now sits at the right hand of the Father in heaven waiting for “the last days” of Gentile times to expire. Isaiah 9:6&7 “The last days” mentioned in 2 Timothy 3:1-5 are filled with clues as to what we see happening around us when Jesus appears. This second coming of Christ is often joked about but will not be funny in any way. At that time it will be a good thing to be a friend of Jesus. 2Thessolonians 1:7-11 Most Christians don’t realize that heaven will be on earth with Jesus ruling in righteousness and peace form Jerusalem. The Lord’s Prayer often quoted in churches says, “The kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

What this earth needs right now is a divine righteous ruler to stop the chaos we see all over the world and there is none other than Jesus Christ that can do it.

SCARGILL (Rhodenizer) Nellie Debbie Doris 1931 – 2012 It is with great sadness the family of Nellie Debbie Scargill announce her passing on June 12, 2012.

Our mother worked hard all her life from the early beginnings until her illness overcame her ability to pursue the pleasures she enjoyed. Her husband, Corporal Basil Arthur Henry Scargill, preceded her May 16th, 2004, as did her mother Jane and father Bernie, sisters Grace and Shirley.

Mom was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and remained there until Dad took his last station with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Downsview, Ontario in 1963. They moved to Aurora, Ontario in 1966 and she remained in the family home until her last stay at the hospital.

Mom loved animals with all her heart.

She had a hard time turning away any dog that had been abused or mistreated.

She worked and volunteered in several different capacities during her life but will be most remembered for her fondness for Church Teas and Rummage Sales.

She enjoyed the social aspect as well the “great deals” she could find.

We want to extend a special thank-you to the nursing staff at the Southlake Regional Health Centre, Cancer Palliative Care Wing. They were tender and caring with mom and family.

She will be missed by her sons, Dennis W. Scargill (California), Bruce A. Scargill (Newmarket), daughter Wendy L. Sauvé (Calgary), Mrs “B” and her family. She will also be missed by her sisters Mildred, Lillian and Margie and step-brother Johnny all of Nova Scotia. Grandchildren, Kimberley, Eric, Bridgette and Jean-Luc will miss her very much.

Friends may call at the Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home, 157 Main St. South, Newmarket for visitation on Sunday, June 17, 2012 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held in the chapel on Monday, June 18, 2012 at 1 p.m. followed by cremation.

DOROTHY BARANEK (nee Graff)

June 11, 1917 - June 11, 2012 Dorothy was born on a farm exactly 95 years ago in Chisholm County near Powassan, Ontario.

She started travelling during the war between her children on the farm and her war effort work in a factory in Toronto. She moved to Timmins to raise her children after the war. But as soon as she became an "empty nester" she packed up and went to work in The Grenfell Mission in St. Anthony in Newfoundland.

The travelling bug had bitten her. Although she returned to Toronto, then Newmarket, she loved to travel, with her husband, sisters, and offspring around the world twice to all of the continents (except Antarctica) and more than 20 countries.

She infected her children, Doug Stephenson and Diane McCluskey with the travel bug and they have happily passed it on to their children Lisa Hurst-Rhykoff, Jennifer Fulton, Ken Hurst, Lesley Stephenson, Doug Gudbranson and Linda Knoph. She is also survived by her brothers Francis and Lewis Graff; Doug and Diane's spouses, Sheilagh and John; her direct great grandchildren Emma, Sam and Hannah Rhykoff; Amber Fulton; Thomas and Christopher Knoph; and the many children, grand children & great grand children of her siblings.

Apart from the numerous travel adventures she will lovingly be remembered for her beautiful, generous, witty and loving personality and hosting large garden parties for her huge extended family at her home in Newmarket.

To celebrate Dorothy's life we will have one more gathering in her garden at 2:00 pm on Sunday July 8.

On May 17, 2012 our family lost a son, a brother, an uncle, a nephew and a grandson; Kyle. This day will be the hardest day to get through as the years go by. Kyle excelled at everything he put his mind to and was a pro in the shop; he could fix anything he got his hands on.

We don't know where to begin when it comes to thanking everyone for the love and support that has been shown to our family during this nightmare.

We have met so many people who have shared their memories of Kyle with us. It's pretty amazing to know that our personal memories of Kyle have been made greater by getting to know everyone whose lives he played a part in. Kyle has not only left behind his immediate family, but also a large family of friends, teachers and co-workers.

We have such a different perspective about the youth that live in our community after all this. The respect they have shown to our family, to each other and everyone else around them, has been remarkable. The day of Kyle's funeral, a large procession of vehicles followed Kyle's Dodge Pick-up, carrying his casket, from Sutton into Keswick. Along the way, we passed many people who were going about their daily routine, and we can't begin to explain how many people stopped what they were doing and stood roadside to show their respect. One moment in particular that stands out was a young group of 3 boys who took their hats off and stood at attention on the side of Metro Road. It's moments like these that make us proud to be a part of such a great community.

First we need to thank the Forrest and Taylor Funeral Home in Sutton. Greg and Carole were a tremendous help in helping us understand all the things that needed to be arranged. They opened up the funeral home for 2 days of viewings, visited us at our home and made sure everything ran smoothly.

Thank you to Our Lady of the Lake Catholic College. You have opened your hearts to us. The amount of work and food that was organized, so we could all come together and share our memories of Kyle, will never be forgotten. Both of our sons attended your school, and we can honestly say that the faculty are greater beyond what words can express.

Thank you to everyone who donated to the bursary in honour of Kyle. The incoming donations were overwhelming and very much appreciated. It warms our hearts to know that even in his death, the memories of his life will go on to help others.

A heartfelt thank you for donations of food, money and the many keepsake items that were created in Kyle's name. To everyone who has given their support to us; to the ones who put their lives on hold, while we figure out how to go on with ours. Kyle will never be forgotten, and with the daily visits from his friends, his memories will preserve.

So, when you are driving around and you see Kyle's white Dodge Pick-up, don't be afraid to give a wave or stop and talk. The more people we get to know over the years that knew Kyle, will only help us to go on. And when you're sitting in the Tim Horton's line up waiting for your Double Double, remember Kyle.

Again, there are no words to describe how thankful we are to everyone. This is not something we wish upon anyone, and it hurts our hearts that we have had to go through this. Please don't be a stranger to our family, and don't stop talking about Kyle. His memories live in all of us.
