Dark Issue

Featured photographs have a specific energy, closely accotiated with darkness. Something hidden, forbidden, frightening, but still well known to all of us. Many people suffer from Nyctophobia, but we all have that inner dark side. One does not simply run away from this. Issue 12 will take you deeper.

It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side It is a trip to your inner dark side

Misha Koptev project by Synchrodogs

22

The project is about Misha Koptev - 42 year old designer from Lugansk (Ukrainian city that is on the bottom of the rating of Ukrainian cities due to statistics about unemployment, drugs, alcohol, crimes etc.) Misha is one of those people not having any job, money, stability. He doesn’t know how to sew, he didn’t study design or fashion, he knows no fashion news from around the world, watches no TV, Internet, Magazines. In 1993 Misha Koptev created (not officially grounded by papers) Theatre of Provocative Fashion “Orchid”, since that time the entrance fee is not more than 0.6 euro for a person to come and watch the show.

All the people on the pictures have no money, they drink alcohol really hard making provocative fashion shows in some crappy local bars, working for 1 bottle of vodka and some small amount of money. Misha himself is a genius born in Ukrainian ghetto, his clothes represent Ukrainian lifestyle to some extent.

26

The shooting took place partly in the flat of his mother, in one room of which he keeps his clothes. All the outfits are just on the floor mixed up with garbage, bugs, dirt, boxes, bones of dead animals he found on the street and uses for his collections. He rarely makes shows now, big part of his clothes is stolen by “models” (as some of them were imprisoned before, some are pregnant, some are sick, or just have no money to live decently). He buys clothes at flea markets, cuts some parts with the scissors, puts the crystals and strasses on, do make-up and old school body art. In his city he is a truly scandalous personality, he says “If I come to police and say I am Misha Koptev they put me into prison without explaining the crime”.

Interview with

TEEN WITCH

a.k.a. Andrea Sonnenberg

CZE: Do you often see other people’s blood around you? In streets, parties. etc..? TEEN WITCH: Not typically. Mostly in fights though, I do happen to see quite a few fights. CZE: So you say, San Francisco is a very peaceful town, without any hardcore parties and blood? TW: Not really. There are many fights happening in San Francisco, all the time. Just the other day I was at a baseball game and saw a really crazy fight. CZE: What is the most popular drug among you and your friends? TW: Alcohol. Cocaine. Pills. CZE: Tell us a short poem with DARK theme. (Just improvise) TW: Haha. Sure I guess.. She is a witch, a teenage witch, her hat and cape , are black as pitch. haha thats my best offer CZE: What are you up to these days? TW: I’m working right now on getting a photo printed 33 ft long and 23 ft high that I’m going to wheatpaste onto the side of a building on market street here in SF. CZE: Sounds cool. What places would you recommend to a newly arrived person in SF that is into “dark” stuff? TW: I don’t know, there are venues here that play all kinds of music, and if you’re into certain types of music, it’s easy to fall into your scene. A lot of hardcore/punk shows happen in oakland, which is a really fun place to go and fuck shit up in.

49

52

CZE: Do you belong or ever belonged to any sub-cultural movement? If not, would you join any? TW: There are many subcultures in SF. I feel like growing up here gave me the opportunity to meet so many different people that I feel apart of a whole bunch of them. CZE: What is the scariest/creepiest thing you have ever seen? TW: Being held up at gunpoint is probably the scariest thing I’ve seen. Seeing guns is pretty scary, but as far as creepy goes, I’ve definitely seen ghosts before. I’ve had paranormal visions where I was seeing something I couldnt describe. CZE: Does your nose bleed often? I’ve seen a few pics of it. Anything paranormal? TW: Usually just from hangovers. CZE: Favorite color? TW: Black and mustard yellow CZE: Okay.. last one.. If you had to choose, how would you want to die? TW: Funny you mention, I think about death quite often. Probably gunshot wound or stabbing seems best but I think about overdose or hanging would be equally ok, not that I revel in death but I do often think about how one will go CZE: We all do, I guess. Thanks for your time, it was fun! TW: Thanks!

SHOW AND TELL Melissa Kagerer

Ok, so this was a rough night. I was living in Chicago at the time and on this particular night I came home from my night class to find my friends with a half gallon of whiskey goofing off in the park down the street. It was December and it had been snowing the past couple of days so there was a nice fresh layer down that we where happily destroying. There was a set of stairs and everyone started joking about how fun it would be to jump over the stairs and land in the snow... so someone actually went to go do it and did it successfully a few times. This encouraged ano58

ther friend to attempt it but instead of jumping down the stair set he jumped over the rail and landed face first on concrete, which none of us knew was there at first ‘cos it was covered in snow. So Pete lifts his head and blood just starts pouring out of his face, he had bit through his bottom lip (which he could now stick his tongue through) and broken his nose. It was the contrast of the blood against the white snow that made me take the photograph. It was violent and peaceful all at once.

Brendan J Megannety

This particular photo was taken in Vancouver at a skatepark called Leeside. Every year there is an informal Halloween jam where everyone skates costumed, there is music and lots of booze. We ended up in Vancouver (my hometown) after a 5 week road trip through the United States, and this was our last night before flying back to Toronto. I think it was a perfect end to an amazing trip!
