View From…The Main Good afternoon and welcome to Purvis Park for our second cup game of the season as Percy Main take on the other side promoted from the Northern Alliance First Division alongside us at the end of last season, AFC Newbiggin. The Bay Plastics Challenge Cup is contested by the league’s Premier Division clubs only and like last week’s game will go into extra time and penalties if needs be, to settle matters today. Percy Main played well last week I thought and the lads could count themselves unfortunate to finish up on the losing side, having led the game through Bettsy’s 85th minute goal, until the last kick of the ball of normal time. But that’s football and we shall have to regroup and start again today. It was good to see quite a few in for the Seaton Delaval game as well, hopefully any first timers may have found their way back again today! Newbiggin have made a decent start to their first season back in the league’s top division since reforming and currently sit around the mid table mark, although they did go down 3-2 to North Shields Athletic on John Spence’s artificial surface and under their lights on Wednesday night, while they also recorded a 2-0 success over The Main back at the start of the season. Hopefully we’ll see a different sort of game today! At the time of writing we have not managed to add to the squad this week, although talks are ongoing with at least one player, while we can expect to see the return of 1 or 2 others who have been missing for one reason or another. A reminder that next week’s game against Blyth Town will kick off at 12 noon. This is not as it is being beamed out live on Sky Sports, but to avoid a clash with the North Tyneside derby at the Darren Persson Stadium as North Shields host Whitley Bay in the Northern League First Division. The signs are that our game is likely to attract a healthy crowd as well, with many indicating that they are hoping to make a day of it and will attend both games. Enjoy the game today! View From...The Gaffer ‘Football like life is a game of inches’ so the famous Al Pacino quote from the film Any Given Sunday goes. Last week Seaton Delaval equalized with literally the last kick of the game. In extra time we were punished for one slip. This week work and the Great North Run sees us deprived of around half our squad. It would be easy to get down (especially in the light of a little sniping on social media – even at this level one or two ‘fans’ think they know better). Yet there’s definitely an air of optimism in the camp. The outstanding performances of young Jack Armstrong (18) and Jake Stephenson (19) have lightened the mood. Perhaps it is the knowledge that the next few weeks will see the return of James Mobberley, Tony Browell, Redmond Cockburn, Joseph Betts, Chris Laidlaw and more. Overall I think it is because most people in the squad and club know we’ve got a group of players who understand what is required to play for Percy Main and get us out of the position we are in. Hard work, focus, commitment and may be a touch of talent will win through. Just a word on Danny and Dave. Tuesday was our first proper training session back after the midweek games. It reminded me that we have an outstanding pair of coaches who will continue to develop the players we’ve got. Plenty of reasons to be cheerful. Here’s a to a good game and the right result today. Saturday September 5th '15 George Dobbins League cup Percy Main 2 Seaton Delaval 3 (AET) Percy Main could count themselves desperately unlucky to go out of the league cup at the first hurdle in a thrilling tie at Purvis Park in which they were never behind until Jack Foalle's extra time winner for Seaton Delaval. Most of those present would have thought that Joe Betts superb 85th minute strike which put The Main 2-1 in front during the game's latter stages would have been enough to win the tie within its 90 minute duration, only for the visitors to agonisingly equalise with literally the last kick of the game to force extra time. Following injury, Betts who was last season's Player of the a Year at Percy Main made his first start of the season and put in a tremendous shift in his side's forward line and if anyone deserved a goal it was he, yet along with his team mates could count himself very unfortunate to finish up on the losing side. However despite the reverse, there were many plus points for The Main and encouraging signs that the team have what it takes to strengthen their resolve to pull away from the wrong end of the table. It is a fact that luck has not been on The Villagers side of late, with the old adage that when you're down everything seems to go against you certainly ringing true among those of claret and blue persuasion. Typically the unavailability of club captain James Leggett and the forced withdrawal of talismanic centre half Tony Browell 30 minutes from kick off due to injury, led to a last minute team reshuffle, as Rob Watson stepped in and proved a more than able deputy. continued —————>
Seaton Delaval had won the league game by the same score line only a fortnight previous, having been 2 goals to the good during the first half, but the latest encounter between the sides was an altogether different affair and it saw Percy Main take the lead in a game for the first time this season and at the 8th time of asking, thanks to a memorable effort from Stewart Wright, which proverbially was worth the admission money on it's own. One of the factors which have led to The Main's downfall during the early part of the campaign has been their seemed inability to defend during the early stages of each game, as sloppy goals have been conceded which have ultimately cost the side vital league points and this unwanted statistic almost repeated itself again on Saturday as 9 minutes in Phil Cartwright's deep ball from the right was fired over by Daniel Nelson to the relief of the homesters and David Brotherick shot just past the post from Alexander Henderson's right wing corner. At the other end Ant Ridley struck the upright for The Main and Delaval goalkeeper Kevin Morton cleared from the advancing Ryan Laws. Rob Rodgerson, Morton's opposite number did well to clear from the feet of Nelson and just before the interval, Percy Main had another let off as Foalle fastened onto a long ball from defence and his low shot was inches past the far post The game burst into life just after the interval after a succession of corners forced by Seaton Delaval, The Villagers Jack Armstrong, a summer signing who impressed in his side's midfield flashed a shot just wide, but the deadlock was broken on 57 minutes in the home sides's favour and in spectacular style as Wright some 30 yards from goal and with seemingly little options, fired a glorious effort over the head of Morton. The goal visibly lifted The Main's spirits, but the lead was not to last. Betts attempted to double Percy Main's lead but fired across the face of Morton's goal, while in reply Brotherick blazed high over he bar when well placed. The respite was to prove short lived for The Villagers as the experienced Chris Rue executed a clinical volley which just beat the dive of Rodgerson to restore parity, just past the hour mark. continued —————>
With the game anybody's to win, play swung from end to end as Betts, Laws and Armstrong went close for The Main, but with 5 minutes remaining, Wayne McDine's measured free kick, flicked on by Laws fell to Betts who fired home what would surely be the winner for Percy Main. The action continued unabated in the closing minutes as both goalkeepers distinguished themselves, Rodgerson from Cartwright and Morton denied Wright a second, but with the game deep into injury time, Seaton Delaval substitute Frank Storey volleyed home from the edge of the area to take the game into extra time. The added 30 minute period saw Laws head over and Rodgetson produced a point blank save from Delaval's Foalle, but it was the same forward who was to have the last word as he steered home Rue's left wing centre to win the game for the visitors.
AFC Newbiggin AFC Newbiggin were formed by John Messenger who also managed the team. AFC Newbiggin are in there 4th season and have enjoyed continued success. 1st Season: Promotion from North Northumberland Division 2 Runners Up. 2nd Season: North Northumberland Division 1 League Winners, Also Cup Winners so a double success. 3rd Season: Northern Alliance 2nd Division Runner Ups and NFA Minor Cup Winners 4th Season: Currently 2nd and in the Final of Divisional Cup. John Messenger due to work commitments relinquished managerial duties and John Conroy took over for the debut season in the Northern Alliance 2nd division. John decided to step down after 3 months and Simon Wilson took over and continued AFC Newbiggin’s progress with promotion and the club highlight in winning the minor cup. AFC Newbiggin have now progressed into the premier division of the Northern Alliance after a remarkable 4th successive promotion.

Back in the day..2 years ago Saturday August 31st '13 Northern Alliance Premier Division Ashington Colliers 0 Percy Main 1 Percy Main recorded their first win of the season at the sixth time of asking, following a well deserved 1-0 victory at Ashington Colliers windswept Hirst Welfare ground, thanks to a superb individual goal in the 70th minute by Jordan Miller. Following a tough start to their league campaign which has seen The Main prop up the Alliance Premier Division table, the win was no more than Shaun Galbraith's young side deserved and will no doubt prove to be a vital confidence booster for the team which had shown such promise during pre season. There were many contenders for the man of the match accolade, with Miller himself who was transferred from Seaton Delaval a day prior to the game perhaps just shading it, while his strike partner Chris Laidlaw worked tirelessly in the final third and Micky Haley and James Leggett barely put a foot wrong in the defence all afternoon. Galbraith was once again forced to shuffle the pack after being hampered by injuries which ruled out strikers including, last season's top scorer Chris Bell, and Joe Betts, while 17 year old Darren Walsh who had impressed in the midweek defeat at Shankhouse was unavailable. continued —————>
Any thoughts of Percy Main sitting back were banished in the early stages of the game as Ross Berkley fired over, while Ashington goalkeeper Craig Towart, pulled off a superb save from Rob Ridley with 8 minutes on the clock, with Laidlaw not far away from the rebound and the home number one had to be on his mettle to deal with a Miller strike soon after. There was half an hour played before the home side threatened as Ryan Douglas broke down the right and fired into the side netting and Darren Riddle's shot cleared the far post when perhaps he may have done better as there was little seen of the home attack. The visiting contingent however, were encouraged by how their side were performing and witnessed further efforts on The Colliers goal in by Redmond Cockburn and Ridley as the half time whistle approached. The second half continued in the same vein as good link up play down the right saw Cockburn and Ridley cleverly combine and the latter sent a dipping effort just over the crossbar. Miller was in the thick of things as the game progressed and was thwarted by Towers again as the Colliers custodian kicked clear, but the goal when it came was a beauty as Miller dispossessed Anth Watson some 30 yards from goal, before running on to fire home from the edge of the area, sparking mass celebrations on the touchline and on the pitch. At the other end, Ashington's Ross Gair saw his long range effort competently dealt with by the underworked Chris Bannon in the visitors goal, while Miller went so close to adding to his tally by heading Laidlaw's measured centre just past the post. 4 minutes from time, Miller almost turned provider and played a long diagonal ball from his own half for substitute Chris Glass to run on to and his shot cannoned off the upright with Towart well beaten.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF PMAFC Percy Main Amateurs were formed in the 1919-1920 season by ex servicemen returning from World War 1, playing in the Northern Amateur League and finished their first season as league champions, also lifting the Northumberland Minor Cup - the ground was then known as Middle Row Park as reference to three sets of cottages on the site, Low Row, Middle Row and High Row. The club also won the Championship on 4 consecutive seasons between 1925-1928. During the 1929-30 campaign, Percy Main reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Amateur Cup, defeating then notable opponents Cleethorpes Town, Rawmarsh Welfare and Yorkshire Amateurs before going down to eventual finalists Bournemouth Gasworks Athletic - this game produced The Main's share of the gate as a huge £105, 12 shillings and 9d! Between 1931 and the War years the club played in the Tyneside Senior League before rejoining the Northern Amateur League. The Villagers subsequently joined the Northern Alliance in 1968 and enjoyed Northumberland Amateur Cup success in 1968,1970 & 1971 also lifting the Northern Alliance League Cup by beating Bedlington Terriers at St James Park the following season. In 1978 The Villagers won the Northumberland Senior Bowl for the first time with a 1-0 win over West Allotment at North Shields Appleby Park ground. The Northern Alliance League Championship was won in consecutive seasons 1981 and 1982 while the club finished runners up in 1983. Percy Main were relegated to Division 1 in 1992, but were promoted as champions in 1998-99 and the club went on to lift the League Cup in their first season back in the top flight. In 2004 The Villagers ended their Premier League season in fourth place and won the Northumberland Bowl once more, defeating Cramlington Town at Whitley Park, but two years later the team were relegated. The Village Ground was renamed Purvis Park in 1996 in recognition of 50 years dedicated service by the late Alan Purvis as player, secretary and chairman.
