Promotion Special

View From...The Gaffer It is important that I start this piece reflecting on our promotion by publicly thanking the committee. Having come in half way through last season I still feel responsible for our relegation regardless of what had gone before. The committee would have been well within their rights to cut their losses and look for another manager. Instead their support and faith has been rewarded with promotion and a squad that is much better equipped to compete in the Premier Division of the Alliance. Norman said very soon after our relegation that sometimes you need to take one step back before a taking leap forward. I was hard to stomach that day but he was right. Thanks for standing by me fellas, I really appreciate it. Not for the first time or the last I want to give credit to Danny Nelson who has been the engine behind our success. From the planning and execution of a brilliant preseason which established our shape and core fitness to the time, effort and energy that he had put into training during the season. He has also allowed us to make the most of Dave Addison’s limitless experience. Dave has been brilliantly supportive, prepared the players for games professionally and worked superbly in training. I’ve said before we have the best coaching team around I really do mean it. I have used pretty much every superlative going to describe the players this season. I can’t give them enough credit for their approach and willingness to do what was asked. All have contributed from Dave Edwards couple of appearances in goal early in the season through to Adam Green who has started every game bar one. The contributions have been very different from Steve Hart’s experienced cameos to Ryan Law consistent and combative performances in midfield. Jake Stephenson played a key role early in the season while Ryan McKee’s return to the side for the last third of the season can best be described as a touch of class.

View From...The Gaffer continued The mantra of #oneteam as been ever present and has manifested itself in how we’ve trained, played and partied. During our second dip in form it was the experienced players that decided that everyone had to go for pre training runs. Non attendance meant a fine. On the pitch no less than 20 players have found their names on the scoresheet. The fact that we haven’t been reliant on one or two players for our goals has been a crucial factor in our success. #oneteam socially is best left to the squad’s WhatsApp group but I think its fair to say that new friendships have been formed during some legendary nights out. My highlights include the games against Ponteland and Cullercoats. The winning goal against Bedlington was a high point. Ant Ridley tackled his younger brother Rob (who left Percy soon after I arrived at the club) with the ball dropping to Bettsy to finish cooly. The only disappointment I had with the win against Isabella was the post match celebration. The atmosphere in the dressing room was happy but not ecstatic. The players reasons will tell you everything about their mentality. They were pleased we’d got promoted but won't celebrate properly until they are confirmed as champions. It's that winning mentality that has helped us to achieve what we have. I am proud to have been part of the 2014/2015 season. Thank you for your support. Here's to a great 2015/2016 season.

View From...The Stands Good afternoon and welcome to Purvis Park for our penultimate home game of the season as we take on Wallsend Boys Club Seniors in a game which could see Percy Main crowned Northern Alliance First Division champions come 4:15 should we win of course. Our promotion has already been secured following our 2-0 success at Blyth Isabella last Saturday and with the luxury of 4 games still to play as well. It has been a great season to watch football at Percy Main this time around, full credit and a massive thanks to all those who have pulled on the claret and blue of our club this season, our elevation to the Premier division next season has been much deserved (if I say so myself) and it's been nice to see so many other clubs, including today's opponents recognising our achievement and sending their congratulations. Indeed it was quite humbling sitting downstairs in a packed Chirton Club last Saturday among the throngs of jubilant Wembley bound North Shields supporters, when one toasted The Main's promotion and the whole bar raised their glasses to acknowledge our own contribution to football in a revitalised NE29. Credit as well to the management team of Richard, Danny and Dave who have quietly gone about their business and moulded a cracking team, playing in the right way which has taken the division by storm, the future is bright and we have solid foundations in which to build for the challenge which lies ahead in the future. However if anybody could be our bogey team this season, then it is our opponents today who we have faced twice this season in the league and cup and have failed to win either. The 0-0 draw at Bigges Main back in August halted our 100% start to the season at the 6th time of asking, while Wallsend put paid to our Combination cup hopes with a 3-2 success a couple of months later at their home base once more. Â Wallsend currently sit third in the table behind a faltering Newbiggin side and need a win today to keep their own promotion challenge on the rails, so it's a bit close to call. Just a reminder that the Northern Alliance will host the Bluefin Sport Amateur cup final between Gateshead Leam Rangers and Grainger Park BC here on Easter Monday, with a 12 noon kick off. It is a feather in our caps that the league have chosen our ground to host what will be the first of 2 cup finals here, so all support will be appreciated! Enjoy the game today. Norman DeBruin

View From...Dave Just about 2 years ago I received a request from Shaun Galbraith , who was just about to take over as manager of the club . I was coach for Morpeth Town reserves at that time who were in Division 1 of the Alliance . I said I would seriously think about it but wouldn't leave a team part through a season . Shortly after that a phone call from a guy I played with, also at Morpeth Town , Bob Rogerson ,swayed me and made my mind up . Training started well in the season of 2013/2014 but numbers dwindled and before we knew it we were playing friendlies . It was clear then the work rates and expected fitness levels would never be achieved for such a long campaign . Every week we sent a different team out and although the guys put the effort in there in the back of my mind I began to realise how difficult the season would be . Sure enough the lowest point of my time at Percy Main came when it was confirmed we were relegated to Division 1 . I remember looking at the stalwarts from the committee , who are the life and soul of the club , and seeing the bitter disappointment on their faces. Coming towards the end of that season I was approached by Blyth Town to run a Development Team and had more or less agreed to that . I even attended the first league meeting for them to assist there application to the Tyneside Amateur league. The end of season 'do' should have been a sombre affair but instead I found new energy within the club a belief again. That emanated from Nug and Dan on that night . Again a conversation on that night with Bob Rogerson and the other committee men totally changed my mind . I came away that night with one thing on my mind only - to help get the club back where it belongs !

View From‌Dave continued This time pre-season was full of energy and that was brought about by Dan and Nug's attitude and bringing with it self-belief and a brilliant team spirit .  When I met Dan for the first time I thought ' what a cocky little git ' but once training started I knew we would get along and he has brought some excellent ideas into the training regime. The three of us work as a unit sometimes we don't always see eye to eye and we say so but any decision we arrive at is for the good of the team and the club. Getting back to Saturday March 28th 2015 at Blyth Isabella pitch and the final whistle - well it was relief but deep down we all knew there would be only one result -Promotion for us . Well that's part 1 out of the way we now need to take the next step and become champions elect . I looked at the same committee men faces this time , particularly my mate Bob Rogerson , after the game . We smiled , shook hands and I could see what this meant to him and his colleagues in the committee . Percy Main FC is not just about the players or the management team but everyone involved from the wives of the committee men making the grub to those guys putting the nets up its a collective thing. It is a culmination of all these things that make this club so special . Let's now do it for everyone at Percy Main and win the league - good luck to everyone involved .

View From...Nella Percy Main Promotion This season has surpassed my own expectations, yes I was hoping to get promoted but the manner of it is beyond all I could have hope for. This is due to a whole team effort: the players, the management team and the committee. Hence the phrase of the season #oneteam. Without us all pulling together after last seasons disappointment we would not be where we are today. We know the job isn't finished yet as we want to finish off the season winning the league, something that the last Percy Main team to be promoted didn't manage. Three more points are needed and we will be trying our best to do this as soon as possible. To bounce back at the first try is superb, as the Northern Alliance Premier Division is where a club like Percy Main belong. Next year is another chapter and one I personally am looking forward to.

View From...The Captain Last week’s victory against Blyth Isabella confirmed our return to the Alliance top flight and the game itself very much summed up our approach to the season. Determined, motivated and committed. All essential for us to bounce back at the first time of asking. And the target was complete with four games to spare! After a very disappointing 2013-14 season we arrived to pre-season keen to get us back where we felt we belonged. With new members on the management and playing side and a few notable returns we were full of confidence going into our pre-season friendlies. To date, we sit 16 points clear at the top of table and desperate to confirm ourselves as league champions. There have been a lot of particular highs – the 5-2 comeback against Cullercoats when we were 2-0 down. The crazy Chemfica away game when we thought we were in control only for them to peg us back to 4-4 and Adam Green making it 5-4 for with seconds to spare. The 4-0 victory away to Wooler were the lads silenced the Ultras and Jake ran the show (so I’m told, Christmas shopping was a nightmare). And the 3-1 victory away to Newbiggen. Horrendous conditions but epitomised what we as a club are all about, working hard and giving everything for each other. Our success has come from our strength in depth. Whenever we have had injuries, suspensions (Gaz) or players away we have had the luxury of having quality players to step in. Starting from having four quality goalkeepers, Bobby, Eddy, Reece and some lad from Bohs. Three versatile full backs in Ant, Rob and the ever present Adam Green. Dwayne proved to be a pivotal signing in centre half with the departure of Paulo, Micky Haley taking on the railway tracks and Rob Carr delivering post to the whole of the north east. Midfield has shown our true strength in numbers and quality, Redaz, Lawsy, Ryan M, David Moyes and the oldest looking 18 year old I know, Jake.

View From...The Captain continued Oh and the ever quiet, hobbit lookalike, Davey. Then on to the strikers, Sam, Fidz, the Ginger Assassin (sorry strawberry blonde), Harty, Gaz, Curtis (up to £45 fines now) and Whitley bay’s best customers, Sneap and Stew. Then there is the enigma that is Jorge whose ability to score a deflected goal proved to be pivotal. All backed up by the excellent management team – The Trotter family; Uncle Albert (Dave), Del Boy (Nuge) and Rodney (Danny). It has been a pleasure to captain the club through what has been a tremendously successful season but also an emotional one for a couple of obvious reasons. In these difficult times the players have done themselves and the club proud. The lads should be full of pride for not only their commitment and effort this season, but their togetherness, sincerity and sportsmanship (mines a carling Lindsfarne). Special mention to Doc and the whole of the committee, without their commitment we would not be where we are now. In any occasion of adversity this club shows why it so special and why it is unique. Genuine club ran by genuine people. PMAFC. Back where we belong.

A Word From ADS Air Con LTD Congratulations from the Clubs Main Sponsor ! We are delighted at ADS AIR CON that the club have gained promotion back to the Northern Alliance Football Premier League, well done, back where they belong. Our first Year as sponsor puts us also on the brink of being Division 1 League Champions, which will be well deserved. But, that is not the only reason ADS AIR CON have invested in the Club. As a Player, FA Coach and Chairman in the past, I know how difficult and expensive managing and running an Amateur/Semi pro Club like Percy Main Amateurs can be. It is important grass routes clubs, especially old establish and historic clubs like PMAFC continue into the future, which is why we are the main club sponsors to ensure this happens. Additional, another factor has been the set up and culture of the club which is second to none. Apart from the great job the manager, Richard, his coaching staff and players have done the on the pitch, the Committee, back room staff, grounds man and you the supporters have also contributed to the successful ‘togetherness’ which is Percy Main Amateur’s FC. We are proud to sponsor the club and look forward to it going from strength to strength in the future, Best wishes to you all Tony Short

A Word From Chairman Pete We’ll here we are nearing the end of the 14/15 season and what a season it’s been both on and off the pitch, the promotion party has now begun and it’s probably the right time to give an overview of the season so far. This time last year in the league we had amassed a truly disappointing 18L 3D 3W, if we compare that to this years 4L 1D 19W I’m sure you’ll agree there has been a drastic improvement and this is all down to each and every individual who has invested themselves in the club over the past 12 months. Thankfully due to this my speech at presentation night will be a lot more enjoyable this time around. Although having signed 41 players on this season it’s fair to mention that only 29 players have featured in the match day squad and 13 of them have made an appearance in over 75% of the games which is a great achievement, the average age of the team has also increased this season to 26 which is due to the implementation of experience in key areas in which we were lacking in our last campaign (let it be noted however that both Richard and Danny are signed on so that does somewhat skew the result). One thing that has proved to be a constant from last season is the dedication and effort shown by Richard and Dave along with the addition of Danny (also taking into consideration the incessant moaning and undying love for Adidas). I firmly believe that the fitness, application and commitment of the team has been improved greatly and this falls on their shoulders. I would like once again to extend our gratitude to the sponsors who have provided us with the backing to ensure that we continue to look as professional off the pitch as we have off it this season. Firstly ADS Air Con who are the main club sponsor taking up opportunities such as advertising hoardings and both home & away strip sponsorship, RHD Construction & Environmental Services who have provided us with club tracksuits & Mangrove Developments who have provided the team with training & warm up kits. Fingers crossed for today as another 3 points would hand us the title of 14/15 league champions!

Match Report Northern Alliance First Division 28th March 2015 Blyth Isabella 0 Percy Main 2 Following relegation at the end of last season in which Percy Main won only league 4 games all told, The Villagers bounced back in the best possible style and clinched promotion back to the Northern Alliance Premier Division at the first attempt with a hard fought win over Blyth Isabella in a game which was spoilt by a strong cross field wind throughout. It has been a fantastic achievement for the team and in particular the coaching staff of Danny Nelson and Dave Addison, overseen expertly by team manager Richard Nugent who have quietly gone about their business and worked tirelessly to mould together an exciting crop of mainly young players. 1 or 2 astute signings have been brought in along the way and Percy Main have taken the division by storm more or less from the off, beginning their campaign with 5 straight victories back in August, while attracting quite a few admirers on the way. The Main have won 19 from their 24 league games played to date, having scored 74 times in the process and conceded only 30 and currently lead the division by a 16 points margin from second placed AFC Newbiggin. Consequently this Saturday's home game against Wallsend BC Seniors will take on extra importance as it will see The Main crowned champions should they win, regardless of results elsewhere. It was a more workmanlike performance which did the trick against Isabella, with a combination of the pitch and the elements not being conducive to good football and The Main's normal flowing style, but the game proved once more that, like the 3-1 win at Newbiggin 3 weeks previous, the side are more than capable of turning in a gritty performance when the need arises and this turned out to be the case against a Blyth side who had shown a bit of recent form themselves having won 3 and drawn 1 of their last 4 games.

Match Report continued Both Percy Main goals were scored by Jorge Bollado and came in the opening quarter of an hour, Ryan McKee who has excelled in The Main's midfield since his return to the side, sent over a left wing corner and the ball half cleared by the home defence fell to Bollado who slotted home through a crowded goalmouth. 3 minutes later, the visitors were celebrating once more as the hard working Stew Wright showed great effort down the left and crossed perfectly for Bollado who made no mistake. Dan Carr who had netted a hat trick for Isabella when the sides met at Purvis Park earlier in the season, but still found himself on the losing side had no such luck this time around as his lofted shot on 27 minutes was well wide, while Percy Main had first half efforts on goal by Davey Surrey, Chris Laidlaw and Ryan Laws, with Laws effort in particular bringing a full length save from Chris Stanwix in the Isabella goal. Anthony Messenger in the Blyth attack had a shot blocked and fired just over the crossbar on the stroke of half time, while at the other end Wright's clever headed flick reached McKee who drilled inches the wrong side of the post. Both sides struggled after the break, with goalscoring opportunities at a premium as the wind continued unabated, notable moments in the Blyth final third saw McKee play in Chris Laidlaw, whose effort was tipped round the post for a corner by Stanwix and Surrey's shot struck the far upright, while Bollado looking to follow up was unable to take full advantage, in reply Andrew Davison for the home side sent in a cunning free kick from the left which ultimately evaded all.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF PMAFC Percy Main Amateurs were formed in the 1919-1920 season by ex servicemen returning from World War 1, playing in the Northern Amateur League and finished their first season as league champions, also lifting the Northumberland Minor Cup - the ground was then known as Middle Row Park as reference to three sets of cottages on the site, Low Row, Middle Row and High Row.

The club also won the Championship on 4 consecutive seasons between 1925-1928. During the 1929-30 campaign, Percy Main reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Amateur Cup, defeating then notable opponents Cleethorpes Town, Rawmarsh Welfare and Yorkshire Amateurs before going down to eventual finalists Bournemouth Gasworks Athletic - this game produced The Main's share of the gate as a huge £105, 12 shillings and 9d!

Between 1931 and the War years the club played in the Tyneside Senior League before rejoining the Northern Amateur League.

The Villagers subsequently joined the Northern Alliance in 1968 and enjoyed Northumberland Amateur Cup success in 1968,1970 & 1971 also lifting the Northern Alliance League Cup by beating Bedlington Terriers at St James Park the following season.

In 1978 The Villagers won the Northumberland Senior Bowl for the first time with a 1-0 win over West Allotment at North Shields Appleby Park ground.

The Northern Alliance League Championship was won in consecutive seasons 1981 and 1982 while the club finished runners up in 1983.

Percy Main were relegated to Division 1 in 1992, but were promoted as champions in 1998-99 and the club went on to lift the League Cup in their first season back in the top flight.

In 2004 The Villagers ended their Premier League season in fourth place and won the Northumberland Bowl once more, defeating Cramlington Town at Whitley Park, but two years later the team were relegated.

The Village Ground was renamed Purvis Park in 1996 in recognition of 50 years dedicated service by the late Alan Purvis as player, secretary and chairman.
