Percy Main Amateurs v Northbank Carlisle Newcastle Building Society Premier Division 3rd October 2015

View From‌The Main Good afternoon and welcome to Purvis Park for today's Northern Alliance Premier division fixture between Percy Main Amateurs and Northbank Carlisle. A warm welcome especially to all those associated with our visitors today who have made the not inconsiderable trip to North Tyneside and hope they have a safe journey home after the match. It's a long way to have to travel for a match at this level and a some expense as well, we couldn't manage to travel that distance every other week, both playing and financially, so fair play to Northbank. I'm sure that fair smattering of Percy Main supporters will have gone home happy after last Saturday's game at Red House, our first win of the season and best performance to boot and I hope it has lifted confidence among the playing camp after what could only be described as a horror show against Blyth Town, 7 days previous in front of our biggest crowd of the season. A 10-0 result is no good to anybody, bar the winners who bolstered their goal difference no end, but certainly not to us and the look on the faces of players and management said it all after the final whistle. Fair play to Blyth mind who are a very good side and chose not to shout their achievement from the rooftops (that I've heard anyway) unlike 1 or 2 others who would have done. It'll be an interesting game today as Northbank started the season well, including a superb 3-0 win at Carlisle City, but have fallen away of late, having lost 4 out of their last 5, which included at league cup exit at Birtley St Joseph's, while we all wonder if The Main have turned the corner and can go on to replicate last season's and even our pre season form? A reminder that The Middens tickets are still on sale, priced at £4 each, ask at the gate today - it's only 3 weeks away! Enjoy the game today. Norman de Bruin

View From...The Gaffer Last weekend brought our welcome first win. While it’s only 1 and we need many more it was very welcome and I certainly enjoyed my Saturday night more than I have done for some time. The manner of the performance was pleasing and while we had a little overdue good fortunate I think we were good value for the 3 points. The victory hasn’t distracted me from the belief that there is more we can do behind the scenes to influence what is happening on the pitch. We have brought in one or two new match day routines. Training has been tightened up (there’s no coincidence that the first win followed the best attended training session of the season so far) and the players are being reminded of the commitments they made to each other preseason. We have to stand up and be counted over the next couple of weeks as we look to build on last weekend. The players have to maintain the standards of performance that they set against Red House and I have to make decisions that I think are in the best interests of the team and result even if they aren’t popular. That may include bringing in one or two new faces to create more competition in the squad and where possible improve the team. I love the players we have at the club and while I wouldn’t jeopardise the team spirit that served us so well last season there is no greater boost for team spirit than winning games. Here’s to another three points today.

Northbank Carlisle It was in 1970 that Northbank FC – now one of Carlisle’s biggest and most successful amateur football clubs – was formed at a meeting in a city pub. The formation of Northbank in Carlisle came about following a succession of preseason friendly matches which culminated in a desire to play in a league. A name had to be chosen and a committee formed, which was done in the Malt Shovel Inn following an evening friendly match. Ged Crooks, who went on to become a well-known nightclub entrepreneur in Carlisle, was voted in as chairman, with Joss Jackson as team captain and vice-chairman. George Routledge became vice-captain and Bill Martin was given the task of finding a league for the team to play in after being voted in as secretary/treasurer and team manager. Three names were suggested and Northbank came out on top, so an Arsenal strip was purchased from Chivers Sports and the numbers sewn on by a young lady named Irene Dunk. Northbank were then accepted into The Border City and District League and matches were played on Sunday afternoons. Northbank joined the Carlisle and District League in 1975 and gained promotion from the second to the first division in 1977. The team continued to play in the district league and in 1987 appointed Kenny Brown to take charge of the team. He signed Mally Dickinson, who as a youngster had been
on Sheffield United’s books. Dickinson became
manager and in 1991-92 they won the League Cup,
beating Whitehaven Miners 3-0. Bob Lancaster joined Northbank from Pirelli in
1992 and was an influential member as secretary,
sponsor and joint first team manager. The senior section of the club were competing
in the local Carlisle & District league. Northbank
had ambitions to play at a higher level so we
applied to join the Northern Alliance league
which is based in Newcastle and is part of the
pyramid system. We were accepted into the
league and our progress through the divisions,
to reach the Premier division, was rapid. We
have been well established in this division for the
last seven seasons with our highest league position
 being 3rd.

Northbank Carlise Season 2015 -2016

Match report ….. Saturday September 26th '15 Northern Alliance Premier Division Red House Farm 1 Percy Main 3 Following an encouraging pre season, Percy Main have made a disastrous start to their Northern Alliance campaign, as their opening 8 games had yielded only a single point, which was accrued on the opening day of the season. Fawdon based Red House Farm on the other hand had beaten The Main on the 3 previous occasions that the sides have met and are the only side to date to have taken a point from runaway leaders Blyth Town, who had themselves comprehensively beaten The Villagers 7 days previous. It could be argued that fortune has not been on the side of Percy Main during the season's opening weeks as the side had on occasions played well and perhaps undeservedly had nothing to show for their efforts, but today's game proved the opposite as Red House struck the frame of the goal 3 times during the game when on another day a goal or 2 may have been registered, while the 56th minute dismissal of former Main midfielder Kevin Grahamslaw also helped the visitors cause. However, there was no lack of endeavour by those sporting claret and blue and all told, it turned out to be a highly merited and most pleasing first win of the season, which should go on to boost confidence no end in The Main camp. Another factor in The Main's poor start has been the inability to field a settled side as injury and unavailability have taken their toll more or less from the word go. Those who returned to the side made a telling contribution, Jake Stephenson had an excellent game in the midfield, Joe Betts proved a handful for the home defence throughout, Chris Laidlaw back from suspension made the first goal and with a bit more luck may have got on the score sheet himself, while Dan Sneap, last season's top scorer and on as a 76th minute substitute, took less than a minute to register his side's third and final goal. continued —————>

Although they had lost their previous 2, leading up to the game, Red House were first to threaten as the lively Martin Soulsby, took on the defence, twisting and turning into the area, but his goalbound shot was tipped onto the bar by Rob Rodgerson in The Villagers goal and scrambled to safety, while Tom Phillips sent a low fizzing shot just past the post. The woodwork at either end took a battering mid way through the first half as the division's leading scorer, Alex Benjamin rattled the crossbar for Red House and Graham Allen did the same for Percy Main following a neat lay off by Stew Wright, but the deadlock was broken on 25 minutes in Percy Main's favour, following a handball offence down the left flank, Laidlaw's free kick was scrambled home by Wright. It was just the boost that Percy Main needed and encouraged by their lead, Wright brought a save from Nathan Sharpe in the Red House goal, Betts headed narrowly over as Wright supplied the ammunition and Laidlaw fired across the face of goal. The Main doubled their lead just before the hour as Wright who had put in a superb shift at both ends of the field for his side and had surely covered every blade of grass on the pitch, centred from the right and as the home defence failed to clear, Jack Armstrong drove home his first goal for the club. It certainly won't go down as goal of the season, but what an important strike it turned out to be. Red House reduced the deficit only 4 minutes later as substitute David McDermott, afforded space and time, fired fired home a speculative effort over the head of Rodgerson from all of 25 yards. The home side had further half chances through Shane Brooks and Lee Dunn, but were unable to breach the visitors defence, but it was Percy Main who scored once more to reduce their 2 goal cushion as Wright and Adam Green combined down the right and Sneap rose to had home. The closing minutes saw McDermott rattle Rodgerson's crossbar with a free kick from just outside the area, while Brooks made a telling challenge on Sneap as the forward bore down on goal.

Northern Alliance Premier Division League Table

Back in the day..5 years ago Saturday October 2nd '10 Pin Point Recruitment Northern Alliance Premier Division Percy Main 0 Harraby 0 Current Northern Alliance Champions Harraby Catholic Club had last visited Purvis Park in August 2009 for a pre season friendly. On that occasion, the Main prevailed 2-1 in what was, essentially, a gentle work out with little at stake. Today’s magnificent advert for local football was a superb end-to-end game that incredibly ended with the score line blank, providing further proof that Percy Main are truly back where they belong in the top flight of the Alliance. This result cements the Villagers’ third place in the table, a state of affairs that not even the most devoted and optimistic a follower of Percy Main could have contemplated when the season began. However, it has to be admitted that in the opening moments of the game Harraby appeared to have taken the lead. The visitors’ centre forward Mark Worrall broke through the Main defence and fired in a good shot that keeper Phil Hogg, deputising for thigh muscle injury victim Rob Rodgerson, did tremendously well to lay a glove on. With the visitors already congratulating Worrall, Main’s man of the match player boss Jason Ritchie made a superhuman effort to clear the ball off the line and hacked it clear. Despite Harraby queries, the unsighted linesman was unable to confirm whether the ball had gone over the line, though a typically Corinthian Ritchie later admitted he felt the ball had probably crossed the line. It is a tribute to the wonderful spirit the game was played in that there was no dissent about this; indeed, referee George Cameron had neither a need to use his cards nor to upbraid anyone all game. continued —————>

The Main’s early threats involved good runs down the left, firstly by Luc Coiffait, who sliced a cross that kissed the bar and dropped behind in the third minute and Michael Bowman, whose electric pace was a frequent thorn in the side of the Harraby defence, who broke through and smashed a drive from a tight angle that hit keeper Jordan English in the chest. These Main breaks highlighted a fascinating contrast in styles between the two sides, with the home team direct and strong running, with the visiting Champions more comfortable with an expansive passing game and the ball remaining on the turf. Bearing in mind the recent weather, it was a great tribute to the home ground staff that the pitch was in such excellent condition. Certainly Harraby’s Guiseppe Amato liked the ball on the ground and his agile turn at the edge of the box gave him a chance for a powerful low shot that Hogg was relieved to see fizz wide. At the other end, Harraby’s English was at full stretch to tip over a clever header by Malcolm Morien from a Jason Ritchie corner. This Main effort was an indication after 30 minutes that the home side had an attacking edge as the Harraby possession game had pressed the Villagers back, though the defence and midfield stood firm. Luc Coiffait then tried an audacious 40 yard drive that English pushed upwards and caught at the second attempt just as a goal seemed a possibility. Amato then set up Mike Swift to drive just wide following a cultured set of short passes at the corner of the area, as the half came to an end. continued —————>

In the early stages of the second half, Mick Haley went on a lungbursting run down the full length of the pitch, just failing to cap this with an astonishing goal by firing narrowly over the angle. The less said about Morien’s next effort on goal when cleverly played in by the even dangerous Bowman, the better, though it heralded a strong section of play for the Main. In an incredible mix up in defence, Harraby presented and blocked chances for Ashley Smyth, Morien and Bowman, before a ridiculous deflection wide kept the goal in tact and signalled four corners in a minute for Percy Main. From the second of these, Dean Ellis had an astute floating effort palmed wide and the final flag kick flashed across the six yard line, inches from an on-rushing Tony Browell. The champions were reeling at this point, but they showed their class by coming again and Phil Hogg brilliantly saved a bullet header from Marc Shiel, who was denied a last gasp winner when Jason Ritchie was again on the line to nod clear. From the last corner of the game Daniel Wordsworth spurned the chance to win the game by nodding a corner over the bar when well placed. The final whistle saw both sides receive a generous ovation for their efforts. It truly had been an excellent game and Percy Main will look to build on this when Heddon visit Purvis Park on Saturday October 9th for a Northumberland Senior Benevolent Bowl First Round tie. Kick off is at the earlier time of 2pm.

This very day …..Percy Main Ladies Sunday October 3rd '10 Women's FA Cup, Preliminary Round. Prudhoe 1 Percy Main 6

Percy Main AFC Ladies first foray into the Women's FA Cup competition ended in an emphatic victory for The Villagers, as Prudhoe were swept aside early on in the game, by a superb and well disciplined display by the visitors in a game played out at Stocksfield. Due to the morning's rain, the game had been in some doubt, but match referee Ron Pygall quite correctly ruled that the pitch although heavy was perfectly playable and happily the contest was allowed to go ahead. Currently sitting at the top of the Northumberland Women's County League table with 16 goals scored and none conceded, The Main were able to replicate their impressive league form despite the forced withdrawals during the game of key players Kelly Rushworth and Tina Oxman due to a couple of horrendous "tackles" by the home side's Stacey Naples and Stef Crann respectively. Pre match a close game was expected, yet Percy Main playing some great attacking football particularly during the early stages of the game, cut through the Prudhoe defence at will and perhaps surprisingly found themselves 4 up after only 20 minutes. With only a couple of minutes played, Oxman's astute ball in, released Rushworth whose pass split the home defence for Jo Grout to run on and execute a superb finish past Becca Foster in the home goal. Minutes later Prudhoe were awarded a penalty after Gemma Kerr had up ended Megan Watson, but following some heated debate about whether the infringement had indeed occurred in the area, Carlie Blackburn steered the resultant spot kick wide. Prudhoe had further efforts from Ash Rea and Kirsty Gallagher, but Percy Main doubled their lead as Rachael Smales raced clear down the right and crossed low for Rushworth to slot home. Grout looking to add to her tally went close, before The Main went 3 up in a move initiated by Joss Raine which this time saw Grout turn provider for Rushworth who fired home her second of the afternoon. continued —————>

Foster in the home goal made a smart block from close range to thwart Vicky Freeman as The Villagers top scorer looked odds on to add to her tally, but play switched to the other end and her opposite number Jade Redhead bravely saved at the feet of Megan Watson, but Rea was on hand to slot home the rebound from the edge of the area to give her side hope. But Foster proved the busier of the goalkeepers during the afternoon and proved her worth by tipping Rushworth's goal bound effort behind for a corner and then minutes later had to take the same preventative action from Oxman's right wing free kick, following the foul on Rushworth. With first half stoppage time 2 minutes old, Percy Main made it 5 as Oxman's dipping long range shot deceived Foster to restore The Main's 4 goal advantage. The second half failed to live up the first for goals and action and it was Prudhoe who started the half on the offensive as Watson fired into the hands of Redhead and a corner kick was desperately kicked from the line as Blackburn threatened. The Main lost some of their midfield bite as Oxman was to take no further part in the action following a terrible challenge on the half way line by Crann which thankfully could've turned out much worse and resulted in a booking for the home player. The industrious Watson saw another attempt at goal deflected behind for a corner, but Percy Main's defence which had not conceded prior to today's game held firm and prevented Prudhoe from adding to their consolation. As the home side tired, The Villagers wrapped up the scoring with another delightful goal as Grout played in substitute Jodie Norman from the right and her superb chip from the edge of the area beat Foster for her side's sixth. With 7 minutes of stoppage time played, there was still time for more but Foster, Prudhoe's last line of defence once again rose to the occasion and saved from Rachael Smales and Raine to prevent any further scoring.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF PMAFC Percy Main Amateurs were formed in the 1919-1920 season by ex servicemen returning from World War 1, playing in the Northern Amateur League and finished their first season as league champions, also lifting the Northumberland Minor Cup - the ground was then known as Middle Row Park as reference to three sets of cottages on the site, Low Row, Middle Row and High Row.

The club also won the Championship on 4 consecutive seasons between 1925-1928. During the 1929-30 campaign, Percy Main reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Amateur Cup, defeating then notable opponents Cleethorpes Town, Rawmarsh Welfare and Yorkshire Amateurs before going down to eventual finalists Bournemouth Gasworks Athletic - this game produced The Main's share of the gate as a huge £105, 12 shillings and 9d!

Between 1931 and the War years the club played in the Tyneside Senior League before rejoining the Northern Amateur League.

The Villagers subsequently joined the Northern Alliance in 1968 and enjoyed Northumberland Amateur Cup success in 1968,1970 & 1971 also lifting the Northern Alliance League Cup by beating Bedlington Terriers at St James Park the following season.

In 1978 The Villagers won the Northumberland Senior Bowl for the first time with a 1-0 win over West Allotment at North Shields Appleby Park ground.

The Northern Alliance League Championship was won in consecutive seasons 1981 and 1982 while the club finished runners up in 1983.

Percy Main were relegated to Division 1 in 1992, but were promoted as champions in 1998-99 and the club went on to lift the League Cup in their first season back in the top flight.

In 2004 The Villagers ended their Premier League season in fourth place and won the Northumberland Bowl once more, defeating Cramlington Town at Whitley Park, but two years later the team were relegated.

The Village Ground was renamed Purvis Park in 1996 in recognition of 50 years dedicated service by the late Alan Purvis as player, secretary and chairman.
