Percy Main Amateurs v Whickham Sporting Newcastle Building Society Premier Division 26th August 2015

View From‌The Main Good evening and welcome to Purvis Park for tonight's Northern Alliance Premier Division game between Percy Main and Whickham Sporting Club, in what will thankfully be our last evening game of 2015. I say thankfully because the logistics of getting the ground set up for the match, with players and officials getting here in good time for a 6:15 kick off can be problematic to say the least. Hopefully our visitors will be able to get through the seemingly ever increasing rush hour traffic to enable a prompt start. Like ourselves Whickham who are based at the Glebe Ground, haven't enjoyed the best of starts to the season having accrued just a solitary point from their 4 games played to date, which came thanks to a highly creditable 2-2 midweek draw at Northbank Carlisle a couple of weeks ago. Mind their other opponents have been Blyth Town, Seaton Delaval and Whitley Bay A, so not too much should be assumed upon when glancing at the league table. Percy Main played some good stuff in the 2-3 home defeat against Seaton Delaval on Saturday and were perhaps unlucky to come out of the game empty handed, having come back from a 2-0 deficit to level in the second half. The Main currently have 7 day notice of approaches in for 2 players, while one of ours has been subjected to the same from a Northern Alliance First Division side - more information on these if and when the proposed transfers are completed. Following tonight's game, Percy Main will travel to Scots Gap on Saturday to take on Wallington (2:30 kick off) while our next home game will see a swift return to Purvis Park for Seaton Delaval a week on Saturday (September 5th) as the sides contest the first round of the George Dobbins League cup - please note, this game will kick off at the later time of 2pm. Enjoy the game today. Norman de Bruin

View From...The Gaffer Thank you to all of you who are continuing to support us through this tricky start to the season. It hasn't been easy but those of you who witnessed Saturday's performance will agree that we are turning the corner. When the opposition bench told us at the end of the game that we were unlucky and they were the better team I certainly couldn't disagree. The reaction from the players has been great. Especially senior players like Leggy, Rob, Dean, Redmond and others has again shown me that we will be ok. By the end of the week we are likely to have one or two new faces in the squad. While it's disappointing for players to be overlooked in early games we must have strong competition for places in every position. The attitude has been great so far and I'm massively appreciative of that. In the position that we are in I've got to go with what I think is right game by game but I am in no doubt that given the opportunity any player in our squad could secure a regular starting berth. Work takes me to Scotland this week so the team is in Danny's capable hands. I know you'll all give him the extra support he deserves.

Northern Alliance Premier Division League Table

Back in the day..1 year ago Saturday August 23rd '14 Northern Alliance First Division Percy Main 2 Bedlington Terriers Res. 1 What a difference a year makes. 12 months ago Percy Main started their Northern Alliance Premier division campaign in disastrous fashion as the club crashed to 5 straight defeats from their first 5 games, a run which ultimately was the catalyst for relegation to the league's middle tier, but in direct contrast The Main now sit proudly at the top if the division having won their first five league games. The coaching team of Danny Nelson and Dave Addison, overseen by team manager Richard Nugent, can take great credit for their organisational skills and team tactics, as the bulk of last season's team along with a few astute summer signings, have shown great team spirit and gelled superbly as a unit, gaining plaudits from supporters and opposition alike. Occupying the visitors dug out was Shaun Galbraith, himself a former team manager at Purvis Park during the early part of lat season, while among the visiting Bedlington team, Chris Glass, Jordan Miller, Jack Taylor and Rob Ridley had worn the claret and blue of Percy Main last season and were all looking to put one over their former side. Despite their best efforts, the visitors gave their all, but were left to mull over Joe Betts first goal of the season for Percy Main, a late strike which won the game and ensured the home side repeated the score line which had accounted for Cullercoats during the midweek match some 3 days prior, when goals from Dan Sneap and Sam Thompson proved the vital counters. On an afternoon which saw a fair amount of rain, Bedlington asked the early questions as Ryan Cockburn, brother of The Main's Redmond found himself thwarted by a great challenge in the area by Adam Green, one of the close season acquisitions who has caught the eye, while Mark Race headed the subsequent corner narrowly wide. continued —————>

Percy Main were soon into their stride and Sam Thompson's header was cleared from the line, while the presence of imposing defender Rob Carr caused consternation in the visitors defence as The Villagers forced a series of corners, but the stalemate was not to last and the opening goal arrived just past the quarter of an hour mark as Ryan Laws run and shot was parried by Luke Glasper in the visitors goal, but Sneap handily placed, fired home the loose ball. The Main's lead was to last only 10 minutes as an uncharacteristically slip up in defence, allowed Ridley to square to Race close in and the centre forward made no mistake to level matters. Percy Main had loud penalty appeals turned down as Betts appeared to be brought down by Glasper, with nothing given, while Sneap headed just the wrong side of the post and Thompson saw his low effort dealt with by the diving Glasper, who also did well to tip behind from Rob Carr as the interval beckoned. Second half action saw Sneap fire across the face of goal and Thompson tested Glasper with. a shot from distance, while at the other end, the lively Glass fired a warning shot just wide of the mark and Race brought a save from David Edwards in the home goal, with Ant Ridley mopping up the danger. Glass again went close, with a low shot across the face of goal, while a good chance appeared to go begging at the other end as inside the last 10 minutes, Laws put Betts in the clear, with only the goalkeeper to beat, but Glasper saved with his legs to prevent his side going behind. With the clock ticking down and the game still anybody's for the taking, Betts who had worked tirelessly throughout, gained his just rewards and atoned for his earlier miss as Ant Ridley played a defence splitting ball, which found The Main's front runner perfectly who ran on to confidently slot past Glasper to bring out the biggest cheer of the day. It was just rewards for the effort put in by the home side who, despite Jack Taylor's late glancing header for the visitors, which wasn't far away, went on to consolidate pole position in the table.

Back in the day..3 years ago ish Percy Main 0 Walker Central 2 1st December 2012 Pin Point Recruitment Northern Alliance Premier Division At 4pm on Friday 30th November, it seemed impossible to conceive of a game taking place at Purvis Park at the weekend. Sadly, 24 hours later, Percy Main Amateurs players, fans and officials were left cursing the unexpectedly clement weather, as the thaw had resulted in a game taking place; a game that The Villagers had more than enough chances to win, but one that they lost when Walker Central converted two of their three real efforts on target. The best illustration of the ill fortune that continues to dog the home sides can be seen by two corner kicks from the left hand side at either end of the game. In the opening period, early Walker substitute Jake Mottram’s in swinging effort eluded the efforts of stand-in keeper Lindsay Collinson and flew in to the top corner. The other, by the Main’s Chris Doig, hit the underside of the bar, eluded all attackers and bounced harmlessly away; it was that sort of day for the home team. Collinson, who normally plays right back, was forced to don the gloves when the Main found themselves without either regular custodians Rob Rodgerson or Rob McGregor and cannot be held culpable for this, or the other Walker goal, which came from the penalty spot after 70 minutes, when Dean Morgan’s challenge on James Walker was deemed to be illegal. Walker picked himself up and scored for the team he shares a name with, condemning the Main to their third successive defeat. The only other effort Walker managed was a lusty volley from the edge of the box by returning former Main striker Nkuriza “Drogs” Suabi, which was brilliantly tipped away by the agile, flying Collinson. Indeed, Collinson’s only other meaningful touch was to stop Dean Morgan’s wildly sliced attempted clearance from diverting in to the home goal with barely 20 seconds on the clock; astonishingly this was seen as deliberate and a free kick was awarded, which the Main defence adequately smuggled away. continued —————>

The rest of the game saw a procession of missed chances by the Main and excellent saves by Walker keeper David Watts who, while not the captain of the team, frequently got his side out of a jam. At the very start of the game, Watts was left a spectator at Ryan Laws hit a stunning 35 yard effort that smacked against the bar and away. A Walker attack soon after broke down and the Main poured forward, with James Leggett ready to tap in at the back post, but Watts was spared the bitterest pill a keeper has to swallow, when the Main centre back was flagged offside. Leggett again almost scored when Ryan Laws’s shot was blocked, Leggett skied the rebound. Near the break, Chris Bell had an effort on goal, but despite Watts going to ground, he was unable to profit and put his effort wide. The final effort of the half saw Dean Morgan shooting hard and low, but Watts got a precious touch on the ball to send it round the post. In the second period, Ray Oshin stabbed an effort just past the post, before Dan Quine’s superb right wing corner eluded the luckless Leggett lurking at the back post. Watts defied Chris Doig with his feet as the setting sun made his view of the shot a compromised one. Chris Bell’s marvellous turn and shot from the edge of the box was tipped away by Watts who was providing that essential entertainment the crowd was delighted to see. Finally, Doig’s corner hit the bar and went harmlessly away as Main realised the game was up; the team were beaten but had not surrendered.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF PMAFC Percy Main Amateurs were formed in the 1919-1920 season by ex servicemen returning from World War 1, playing in the Northern Amateur League and finished their first season as league champions, also lifting the Northumberland Minor Cup - the ground was then known as Middle Row Park as reference to three sets of cottages on the site, Low Row, Middle Row and High Row.

The club also won the Championship on 4 consecutive seasons between 1925-1928. During the 1929-30 campaign, Percy Main reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Amateur Cup, defeating then notable opponents Cleethorpes Town, Rawmarsh Welfare and Yorkshire Amateurs before going down to eventual finalists Bournemouth Gasworks Athletic - this game produced The Main's share of the gate as a huge £105, 12 shillings and 9d!

Between 1931 and the War years the club played in the Tyneside Senior League before rejoining the Northern Amateur League.

The Villagers subsequently joined the Northern Alliance in 1968 and enjoyed Northumberland Amateur Cup success in 1968,1970 & 1971 also lifting the Northern Alliance League Cup by beating Bedlington Terriers at St James Park the following season.

In 1978 The Villagers won the Northumberland Senior Bowl for the first time with a 1-0 win over West Allotment at North Shields Appleby Park ground.

The Northern Alliance League Championship was won in consecutive seasons 1981 and 1982 while the club finished runners up in 1983.

Percy Main were relegated to Division 1 in 1992, but were promoted as champions in 1998-99 and the club went on to lift the League Cup in their first season back in the top flight.

In 2004 The Villagers ended their Premier League season in fourth place and won the Northumberland Bowl once more, defeating Cramlington Town at Whitley Park, but two years later the team were relegated.

The Village Ground was renamed Purvis Park in 1996 in recognition of 50 years dedicated service by the late Alan Purvis as player, secretary and chairman.
