Comment With the regular updates of trade events rescheduling, February and March will, at the time of writing, see the return of actual trade shows to our sector since the first lock-down in March 2020. The first show back in our realm is the Surface Design Show being held at Islington’s Business Design Centre in February where we can visit to reacquaint ourselves with the latest coverings and materials which arguably have the biggest impact on the overall design of the finished item. Next up we can re-engage with the numerous suppliers to be found among the halls of the NEC at kbb Birmingham in early March. These two events are both strong events and highly design-led in terms of the exhibitors. If you know what you are looking for, a day will suffice at the Surface Design Show, of course some will readily find value staying longer, but I would deem the larger kbb event very much worthy an overnight stay (or two) to assess the considerable number of fittings, semi-finished components, materials, finishing technology and surfacing options on offer from a broad range of suppliers. I am more than ready to discover what’s been keeping our highly creative suppliers busy these last 24 months since the last kbb in March 2020 – held just a short few days before being told we all had to stay at home. In a sector which has performed very well over the last two years with many manufacturers achieving strong growth, these two events should be well attended creating a springboard into a safer, more confident summer and onwards. This will hopefully return confidence to a part of our industry I know many of us have sorely missed – as visitors we can join with colleagues and customers alike to explore new options providing all of us fresh or alternative opportunities. I hope you enjoy the read.

Weinig Group launches major investment programme in Holz-Her Leading woodworking machinery and technology manufacturer, Weinig Group, is investing €15m in its Panel Processing division to promote its subsidiary, HolzHer. The multi-million-pound investment, which is expected to significantly increase capacity and enable further growth, follows the machinery manufacturer’s recent move to state-of-the-art premises in Nürtingen 18 months ago. Due to unprecedented growth over the last four years, which has seen the company reach maximum capacity, a comprehensive investment programme has been agreed. This will include: further expansion of steel machining and the extension of assembly areas – in addition to the investment made

in 2018, which saw the expansion of Holz-Her’s steel machining area, there will be a new hall and a new centre for steel machining (the assembly area will be expanded to measure 1700m2); a redesign of the logistics concept at the production site – the existing logistics concept will be revised and restructured, with new, highly automated warehouses built for pallets, bars and small parts; and the expansion of the showroom and renovation of the office premises at the Voitsberg site. The €15m investment will not only increase production capacity, but will also create space to expand the company’s product portfolio in the future. In view of investments already

Obituary Andy Mazurkiewicz

On Sunday, 9th January 2022, Andy Mazurkiewicz passed away peacefully at his home in Trawden, Lancashire, with his family at his side. VWM sales director Jason Varey pays his respects: “Our dear friend and colleague Andy – Maz to those who knew him well – started out with Wadkin Colne in the early 1970s, and was very well known and respected throughout the world for his imperious knowledge of CNC machining centres. After leaving Wadkin in the mid 1990s and then working for another woodworking company for a short while, he joined us at VWM in 2001, becoming our technical sales manager. “Andy brought a vast amount of knowledge and business to VWM, and for that we will be eternally grateful – it made us the business we are today. His legacy will live on with us. Maz finally took retirement in January 2021 and was very much looking forward to enjoying life with his family, but this was cruelly cut short. “All of us at VWM would like to offer our sincere condolences to all of his family, and he will be sadly missed by us all.”

made in 2019 (€5m) and 2020 (€12m), which were primarily aimed at the sales, service and development site in Nürtingen, Weing’s continual commitment to Holz-Her underlines the importance of the partnership and its employees. The Weinig Group is well positioned with its two divisions in solid wood and panel processing.

This is due not least to the special commitment of its employees, to whom the company would like to express its gratitude. “We are very much looking forward to continuing to shape the future of Holz-Her together,” say Gregor Baumbusch, CEO of the Weinig Group, and Frank Epple, MD of Holz-Her.

Stability returns to UK timber supply chain, says TTF After a year of near record imports, the timber industry is likely to find itself entering a period of greater stability in 2022, says the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) The latest TTF statistics show the volume of timber imported between January and October 2021 to be 28% higher than the same period in 2020 – reaching a total of 10.3 million m3 in the year to date. Yet even as this milestone is reached these statistics reveal a significant shift in timber import patterns with volumes 16% lower in October 2021 than in the corresponding month in 2020.

This marks the first month in 2021 where the volume of timber imported was below its corresponding level from 2020, and the end of 15 months of continual growth in UK imports of timber and panel products. Softwood import volumes reflected these changes with just 557,000m3 entering the UK in October 2021 – which is very close to the average volume of softwood imports seen between 2015 to 2018 (559,000m3). Maka kicks off 2022 with a raft of innovations 2022 will be a landmark year for Maka as it celebrates its 70th anniversary, and the new year has already started positively for the company, with a full order book, improved structure, and new and exciting innovations for five-axis and multi-axis highperformance solutions for furniture and joinery manufacturers. The company, founded in 1952 by Max Mayer, got off to a brilliant start with the patented swing mortising chisel, which quickly gained a leading role in processing doors and stairs. The company’s path was characterised by enduring innovations, on the basis of customer-specific solutions with a high degree of automation. The 1980s saw the introduction of five-axis CNC systems, and since then the company has established itself as one of the foremost partners in the world for the furniture and joinery manufacturing industry. Consistent digitisation strategy Innovations, with constant development and fine tuning of application-specific manufacturing systems, became the hallmark of the Maka brand, along with outstanding high-quality, robust and reliable equipment. Developments continue in 2022 with the introduction of digitisation. Digital twin One such development, with Siemens One, enables the design and assembly of machines to establish how they perform, with simulation and optimisation of all machining processes before the machine has even been assembled. Production time and lead times are minimised, reducing costs.

Sleek and easy-to-navigate Maka controls provide complete connectivity with Siemens Sinumerik One (image courtesy of Maka)

Robust and precise with the Power-Maka fiveaxis 50° head (image courtesy of Maka)

This same technology is also introduced to the end-user, to define and test new production processes, enabling new component parts to quickly go from screen to machine smoothly, and run right first time. 3D machine and component models and subsequent programmes can be created 100% digitally, and simulated in real-time. This achieves a significant acceleration of production set-up time. Control technology in focus Maka Systems is one of the first German machine manufacturers to offer the new Siemens Sinumerik One control. With the latest modern, networked production and control technology, Maka provides open access to all CAD/CAM tools, clamping devices

and handling systems that are customary in industry. Modibase network protection As part of a joint research project with Fraunhofer institute, Maka Modibase adds integrated IT to the machine. This networks operational components, and at the same time protects it from possible threats from the network. The Maka Modibase contains a secure gateway for remote maintenance and, for the first time, offers the option of automatically backing up all data, programmes and parameters of the machine. At the same time, Maka has advanced the development of new machines and improvements to details. New toolchanging systems and spindle drives ensure more flexibility, higher productivity and better energy efficiency. High process capability expanded Maka’s strength has been to set itself apart from its competitors, with a high level of process competence. This is being expanded further. The company not only supplies leading technology and performance, but also supports businesses, above all, in the development of suitable manufacturing strategies. To this end, Maka has increased its personnel and created new structures, to provide even higher-quality support and service for the enduser. 01952 607700 info@makauk.com www.maka.com

Lawcris Panel Products turns 40 From a small group of experts serving local timber merchants with one forklift and a couple of vans, to a nationwide delivery service with a team of over 250 staff, 45 vehicles and 38 forklifts, operating out of four sites totalling approximately 260,000ft2, Lawcris has seen significant growth in the past 40 years. Lawcris began in 1982 in the city of Wakefield. Noticing a gap in the market for a quick panel delivery service, CEO Chris Hopton and MD Simon Hall founded Lawcris Panel Products. The company rapidly expanded, going from strength to strength, and in 1996 made the big move to Leeds, where it has established an enviable reputation as one of the largest independent panel product suppliers in the UK market. Not only that, the precision and accuracy within Lawcris’ additional

CNC manufacturing division has provided and continues to deliver customers with a crucial service, offering an extension to their own production capacity. “The landscape has dramatically changed since we started out in 1982,” says Simon Hall. “Our intention was to become a strong delivery partner for timber merchants in plywood, MDF and chipboard. Back then, we would be picking in the morning and, in the afternoon, out on the road delivering. Excuse the pun when I say that we really did go the extra mile to make sure our customers got what they wanted, when they wanted it. “That is how our reputation grew – people would ring us, knowing that we would find a way to deliver goods to them when they needed them. It was very fast paced, and we were 100% service orientated.

“Today, we have not slowed down, and our service is still one of the best out there”

“As we grew bigger, so did our portfolio of products. Melamines, laminates, worktops, edging, veneers, acrylics, the list goes on. Today, we have not slowed down, and our service is still one of the best out there.” To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Lawcris has lined up a series of events, including a celebrity charity football match in June with live music afterwards – appropriately named LawcrisFest – which will see the whole workplace invited to

celebrate the milestone. Lawcris’ team is also looking forwards to working with its charity partner, St Gemma’s Hospice, to achieve ‘40 things for St Gemma’s’, which will see it fundraising, volunteering and raising awareness for this vital Leeds-based charity through a number of initiatives. “The last 40 years have been incredible for Lawcris,” states the company, “with the next 40 promising to be just as exciting.” www.lawcris.co.uk

Visitors should expect to see exhibitors offering a first glimpse of their latest launches – to find out more, refer to the latest exhibitor list on the event’s website. kbb Birmingham sales director Jon Johnston comments: “We are looking forward to reuniting the KBB industry for four days of unrivalled networking and specifying. “For many of our exhibitors this will be the first opportunity they’ve

kbb this year will be the first time many will be able to catch a first-hand glimpse of new products

had to showcase their latest products and services, following an unprecedented two years – and kbb offers an unbeatable opportunity for our community to meet in person with valued partners, colleagues and visitors – we can’t wait to welcome everyone back.” Informa Markets, the organiser of kbb Birmingham, has introduced Informa AllSecure, a series of best-practice guidelines and industry standards for all event teams to adopt, post Covid-19. As a result, there are two key differences that exhibitors and visitors will notice

when attending kbb Birmingham: • The aisles have been widened to 4m across the show floor to allow for easier density management and physical distancing (should this be recommended by local government at the time of the show) • Physical visitor and exhibitor badges will be replaced by digital badges that can be accessed on any smartphone. Häfele partners with Laura Jane Clark on Kitchens for Living campaign Häfele UK is partnering with architect and interior designer Laura Jane Clark on a campaign to explore how well thought-out kitchen design and enhanced usability impacts people’s lifestyles and wellbeing, with the findings set to be launched at kbb Birmingham. Laura, who has appeared as an architect on BBC2’s Your Home Made Perfect, as well as Channel 4’s Amazing Spaces, Ugly House to Lovely House, and Shed of the Year, has teamed up with the furniture and fittings manufacturer and distributor to provide insights for its Kitchens for Living campaign. As part of the campaign, Häfele UK will explore consumer approaches to kitchen design and functional spaces, and how the design, layout and usability of a kitchen can affect quality of life. The findings will be analysed to inform kitchen designers,

manufacturers and installers of how they can better meet their customers’ needs now, and into the future. Experts from Häfele’s team will present the results alongside Laura on its stand at kbb, where they will also discuss functional living spaces, the importance of considered lighting schemes and the vital elements of a home office. Natalie Davenport, head of marketing at Häfele UK, says: “The way the home works and fits around our evolving lifestyles has been under more scrutiny than ever before in the last 18 months. We set out to discover just how integral efficient design and functional space are to the way people use and move around their kitchen, and how this makes them feel. “The campaign aligns with Laura’s passion to create innovative internal designs, built around the homeowner’s needs, and which make best use of every square

metre, and so this collaboration is a very natural fit for both parties. Laura not only understands how to design functional, beautiful spaces, but she also has handson experience of creating and renovating them too, making her the perfect fit to provide insights to our customers around the research. “The findings look set to inform and inspire the industry on the needs of homeowners when it comes to their kitchens, so they can be sure they’re always achieving a positive outcome for a customer based on their individual space.” Laura says: “I’m really excited to be working with Häfele UK. When I started my training to become an architect, I used to pore over the huge hardback Häfele catalogue, and regularly discuss with the technical team, who provided invaluable advice on innovative solutions to help bring

my design ideas and detailing to life. This is a great opportunity to work with both homeowners and Häfele to identify and understand where current home and kitchen design is not working, and how it can be improved so that it meets their needs now and well into the future. The findings will prove invaluable for businesses and individuals in the industry, from architects and designers through to manufacturers and retailers, and I can’t wait to reveal more at kbb in March.” www.hafele.co.uk

Titus launches space-efficient slimline drawer range Cabinet hardware expert, Titus, has launched a second-generation range of its popular Tekform double-wall drawers. The new slimline versions feature a sleek and visually appealing design, and have 14mm side panels that maximise efficient utilisation of drawer space. The new design also incorporates the precision-engineered Titus hydraulic dampers to ensure a reliable and consistent soft-closing action, combined with low pull-out force. Tekform slimline drawers are available in three heights – 70, 145 and 182mm – and can be supplied in a range of visually appealing finishes that ideally complement contemporary furniture designs. A further key benefit is that they use the same drilling pattern for runners as their predecessors, which facilitates mounting in existing products and designs. Drawers are fast and easy to assemble, thanks to the EasyFix locking system used for the front-panel connector, which requires only hand insertion and a quarter of a turn with a screwdriver to lock the panel securely in place.

“The new slimline versions feature a sleek and visually appealing design”

Reliable, life-long ConfidentClose soft closing is assured by the use of the renowned Titus single-direction, precision-engineered hydraulic dampers, which smoothly slow down the linear movement of the drawer as it reaches the closed position, but offer minimal resistance to movement when the drawer is being opened. Installation of the drawers within the cabinet

is fast and straightforward. Extended tolerances in cabinet construction can be accommodated without compromising accurate alignment, smooth and silent operation and excellent stability in the open position. In addition, variations of up to ± 1mm in bottom panel width size are acceptable. Uk.titusplus.com

REHAU to present seamless style at kbb Birmingham Leading polymer innovator, REHAU, returns to kbb this year with an industry-first holistic approach to its surfaces, edgeband and tambour door collection, to support the world’s new blended way of living and working. For the first time, REHAU will display its latest RAUVISIO noir monotonic matte surface in a full kitchen display, at booth R114 from 6-9th March at the NEC in Birmingham. With Real Homes having already coined matt black kitchen units as the number-one 2022 kitchen trend, this is something around which REHAU is already receiving much interest. The range is sold on the fact that it is fully integrated, so it runs seamlessly from kitchen front to worktop, to edgeband, to tambour door – synonymous with the popular invisible kitchen trend. It is this holistic approach that promises to set REHAU apart at kbb this year, as the oneand-only edgeband originator that can provide all solutions in one holistic approach, via distributor Waivis. Having won seven prestigious design awards in 2021, REHAU is a well-established provider of furniture solutions that suit residential and commercial interiors. Awards include Red Dot, Iconic, interzum and German Design, with noble matt scooping three of the seven accolades. With blue set to be the colour of the year, symbolising change, according to Pantone, REHAU will also be unveiling two brand-new colours within its RAUVISIO crystal glass laminate surface range. These include Laguna, a modern light blue based on Iceland’s Blue Lagoon, and Atlantico, a modern dark blue, based on the Atlantic Ocean.

Another KBB-first for REHAU will be the display of its RAUVISIO fino metallic surface in bronze. This is a unique finish that further demonstrates the capability and versatility of the REHAU range. REHAU’s latest innovations in edgebanding will also be available to see, including the long-awaited sustainable edgeband lines. The two new product lines, RAUKANTEX eco and RAUKANTEX evo, impressively demonstrate how sustainability can be applied to furniture edgebands. Notably, RAUKANTEX eco is composed of 50% post-industrial recycled material, equal to conventional PP edgebands in terms of design, quality and processing. RAUKANTEX evo is based on renewable raw materials, the use of which creates no additional demand for crude oil. “Our research has proven how much customers value being able to physically see and feel our products,” says Scott Williams, national sales manager. “This helps them explore the

quality of our range and appreciate why we’ve won awards. “REHAU has also seen various product updates since the 2020 kbb show, which makes this exhibition the ideal place for sector professionals to discover first-hand what can be achieved by partnering with us. We’re very proud of everything we’ve achieved at REHAU.” From large industrial businesses to independent joiners, REHAU is experienced in providing furniture to customers on a global scale. Having acquired its subsidiary distribution partner, Waivis, 15 years ago, REHAU is well positioned to service smaller businesses around the country, too. Scott adds: “When it comes to attending the kbb show this year, we are most looking forward to being able to engage with our loyal customers, as well as having the opportunity to introduce the brand to any newcomers.” For more information, visit www.rehauregistration.co.uk/kbb-2022/

Installations Covers Timber invests in Salvador crosscut technology from Daltons Wadkin The installation of a Salvador SuperPush 250 chain-fed automatic crosscut saw has allowed Covers Timber and Building Merchants to keep pace with increasing production demands and provide flexibility in staffing within its feeder mills. Having supplied timber and building materials across the South East for over 175 years, Covers now boast some 15 branches, with an extensive range of over 25,000 product lines. Wanting to satisfy growing customer demand, product manager Peter Openshaw saw an opportunity to help push the company ahead of the competition. “We are fortunate that we have highly skilled salespeople, excellent production cability and a very positive attitude, being open to new opportunities,” comments Peter. “Our ability to source most things and improvise and adapt ourselves to reflect our changing market helps us achieve strong performance results. Our competitors are very good indeed, so this pushes us to try even harder.” Following a thorough investigation of available crosscut saws on the market, Peter contacted Daltons Wadkin, sole distributor for Salvador

in the UK and Ireland. “Peter’s requirements were very familiar – we have helped dozens of timber merchants with similar projects, and I knew immediately we had the right solution,” enthuses Daltons Wadkin’s sales director, Andy Walsh. “For high-production crosscutting, the Salvador SuperPush range is ideal – automatic push infeed, cutting list optimisation, heavy-duty construction, and easy to use.” The Salvador SuperPush 250 is a programmable crosscut saw capable of processing up to 130m3 of timber per shift. Up to seven infeed loading chains ensure the machine is continually fed with individual or stacked workpieces, while the outfeed collection area is automatically cleared for uninterrupted production. Covers’ investment in a Salvador has given it flexibility in staffing, which in turn has positively affected growth. Peter is keen to point out the benefits from a production point of view. “Automatic machinery cuts down on the labour required to carry out particular jobs,” he says. “We have found it difficult to recruit recently, and anything that reduces the need for labour helps with this problem.”

Extractly system is quiet, dust-free, and half the price to run Extractly has commissioned an additional energy-saving extraction plant at Tom Howley’s kitchen manufacturing facility near Glossop, Derbyshire, where the custom-designed system serves the machining operations side of the company’s 5000m2 factory. Established in 2004 by design director Tom Howley, the luxury kitchen brand has a nationwide presence through its 18 showrooms located across the UK, with another due to open later this year. Employing the highest-quality materials to produce bespoke fitted kitchens in oak, walnut and hand-painted finishes, Tom Howley kitchens range in style from classic to contemporary. Through acquisition by Neville Johnson Group in 2011, the company is now part of the renamed Bespoke Home Interior Design Group (BHID), which also comprises Neville Johnson Furniture, Neville Johnson Staircases, and the London Door Company. Over the years, and in common

with many furniture manufacturers, the company has replaced older machinery with newer, faster equipment, as well as adding new machines to increase capacity. The well-equipped production facility now houses two CNC machining centres, with another due to be installed in the spring, along with numerous saws, spindle moulders and routers, plus two Boere widebelt sanders which alone account for over 35% of the factory’s total extraction requirement. In summer 2021, in order to optimise workflow, a reorganisation of machinery was being undertaken at Tom Howley, and Extractly was contracted to reconfigure the ductwork arrangement and integrated Ecogate® equipment which was controlling extraction to an existing, externally sited filter

The two Boere sanders naturally require high-powered extraction when running but, with Ecogate® installed, energy consumption is significantly reduced when the machines are idle

unit, which continues to serve the finishing side of the factory. Over on the machining side, however, planned installations of new, high-speed, dust-producing equipment would require a significant increase in extraction capacity. As factory manager, Alan Ashmore, explains: “The previously

installed, internally sited filter unit was going to need at least an upgrade, but probably replacement, so we approached Extractly for a quotation to bring the system up to specification.” After a full review of current and expected future extraction requirements, Extractly’s proposal included decommissioning the old filter and replacing it with a new, externally sited unit. “There were three key areas that needed consideration at Tom Howley: the requirement for increased extraction capacity; the need to expand the energy-saving Ecogate® system; and, since the only sensible option was to install a new fan and filter unit outside the building, to protect neighbouring residential properties from excessive noise pollution,” says Extractly director, Jake Oldfield.

The six-module Nederman NFKZ3000 unit supplied and installed by Extractly

“The filter unit Extractly installed at Tom Howley is a Nederman NFKZ3000 5+1 – a six-module unit fitted with Nederman’s patented, highperformance, polyester Superbag filter bags”

With projected airflow demand approaching 55,000m³ per hour, and suction provided by a 90kW main fan, Alan Ashmore had highlighted from the outset that it was crucial for the extraction system to be silenced to an acceptable level for residents living less than 50m from the location earmarked for the new dust plant. To ensure there would be no environmental impact at residential properties closest to the site, Extractly commissioned a BS4142 noise impact survey from specialist Beechfield Design Consultancy (BDC). Armed with environmental noise measurements and using acoustic calculations, BDC established requirements for noise attenuation at the site, and designed and manufactured bespoke absorptive silencers. Fabricated from galvanised steel sheet, these particular silencers are designed to reduce the sound generated by turbulent air inside the fan, as well as the noise which travels down the ducting. Internally, the enclosures contain sound-insulating materials, sandwiched within sheets of perforated steel, and spaced to allow efficient, unimpeded flow of dust-laden air through to the filter unit. Extractly’s engineers installed the noise attenuation equipment at the same time as the new fan and filter unit, and the design will ensure sound levels at the nearest

properties are equivalent to normal background levels. The filter unit Extractly installed at Tom Howley is a Nederman NFKZ3000 5+1 – a six-module unit fitted with Nederman’s patented, high-performance, polyester Superbag filter bags. Filtered dust waste drops into the hopper below, where a drag-chain conveyor transfers the collected waste to a rotary valve discharge unit. A series of five 1.1kW regeneration fans enable filter bag cleaning to be carried out automatically during operation, and waste dust is transferred, pressure-free, directly to a covered box cart. Designed for continuous operation and to handle high dust volumes, these units are manufactured to strict safety and emissions standards, and are fully ATEX compliant. In addition, the modular construction will allow Tom Howley to add further modules if future equipment acquisitions further increase demand for dust extraction. The installation has also benefited from the inclusion of a second Ecogate® greenBOX12 controller, doubling the capacity of the existing on-demand energy-saving system. Ecogate® technology works in conjunction with a variable speed drive unit, which automatically adjusts and optimises the running speed of the main extraction fan as individual woodworking machines come on line or shut down.

Bespoke absorptive silencers significantly reduce noise levels from the 90kW main fan

Top left: Rotary valve unit discharges filtered waste pressure-free Top right: Ecogate technology controls extraction throughout the factory Bottom left: Ecogate automatic dampers fitted to all machines Bottom right: Bespoke cabinetry produced at Tom Howley

When compared to standard installations, where the fan operates continuously at full power, an Ecogate® system can typically reduce energy consumption by over -50% — with the resulting cost savings becoming more dramatic as energy prices continue to rise. Extractly’s technical director, William Kenyon, who has been involved with Ecogate since the technology was introduced to the UK woodworking industry back in 2010, explains how these savings are made: “With Ecogate®, sensors on each machine constantly monitor usage, and extraction is independently controlled, in realtime, to match the requirements of each individual piece of woodworking machinery. “Since the extraction system only operates when machines are running, the total extraction volume requirement is significantly reduced, creating potential for huge energy and cost savings, as well as

lower noise levels – both at the fan, and inside the factory.” Extractly completed the installation over the Christmas downtime and commissioned the system in time for full production to get under way as the company returned to work again in the new year. Adam Slack, Howley’s production supervisor, says: “Everyone is delighted with the job Extractly have done here. We now have a fully automated, future-proofed system which just gets on quietly and efficiently with the task of dust extraction — levels of both dust and noise on the factory floor have been reduced significantly. “We were also very impressed with the standard of work, and the way Extractly handled every aspect of what was a very time-contingent contract.” 01924 520462 info@extractly.co.uk www.extractly.co.uk

JDH Joinery ramps up production with new Homag equipment JDH Joinery, a diverse manufacturer of joinery products, has seen a marked improvement in its production volumes following the recent installation of a Homag Sawteq B-130 panel saw. The company designs and produces a wide array of high-end furniture products for office fit-outs, kitchens and bedrooms. Its highly skilled team of joiners work with an extensive range of materials, including panel-based products such as MDF, laminates, veneers, melamine-faced boards, hardwoods, softwoods and solid surface materials. Established in 2016, JDH joinery operates from a 6000ft2 facility in Chester. It has a fully equipped machine shop, assembly area, spray shop, storage facility and office space. After observing a significant increase in demand for its products, the company recently invested in a Homag Sawteq B-130 panel saw. According to company director, Joseph Hannigan, the company’s joiners can now manufacture twice as many panels with the Homag panel saw than they previously produced using a manual sliding table saw. Optimised material processing delivers increased yield and less waste “It can accurately and quickly cut a large volume of material into components,” enthuses Joseph. “The new panel saw now enables us to label the panels ready to be moved onto our CNC or edgebanders. The machine’s software also

“The company’s joiners can now manufacture twice as many panels with the Homag panel saw than they previously produced using a manual sliding table saw” passes production information to these other machines and assembly areas. These advanced features have effectively optimised our material processing so we can achieve a far better yield and create less waste. “For such a powerful machine, it also benefits from a small footprint. The control software – CADmatic 5 – is easy and intuitive to use, and will enable us to take advantage of more advanced software applications (such as Tapio) in the future.” Joseph also mentions the

exceptional service he received from Homag. “I was impressed with the expert advice provided by the Homag sales representative, and with the timely Homag installation and comprehensive operator training,” he says. “Homag is therefore at the top of my list of wood-processing equipment suppliers I would recommend to others.” Homag equipment came highly recommended As part of his panel saw selection process, Joseph visited the Homag exhibition stand at the Ligna woodworking show – a world-leading trade fair for woodworking and wood-processing plants. When assessing the machine’s features before purchase, the most important benefits Joseph specifically required from a new panel saw were operational efficiency, ease of use and integration into the existing workflow. Joseph opted to purchase the Homag panel saw after reviewing the panel saw specifications of other brands and the recommendations from many professionals in the woodworking industry that had long-term experience of using the Homag Sawteq B-130 panel saw. His own experience of the efficient operation and reliability of other types of Homag machinery used in his workshop also played a role in his decision to select the Homag brand for his new panel sawing requirements. Longwood Joinery enhances product quality with Hoffmann’s CB-M end profiler Longwood Joinery has been manufacturing quality windows, doors and staircases since 1972, and is a committed member of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). The current owners, Paul Shooter and Andrew Humphries, took charge in 2008 when the original owners decided to retire. The company has a welldeserved reputation for delivering quality products on time, and has developed close relations with its customers. Although Longwood Joinery supplies many of the major house builders, such as Persimmon Homes, Linden Homes and many more, it still offers its individual customers the highest level of project consideration and impressive value for money.

The company prides itself on working to the highest standards within the industry for performance and quality, with investment in the latest machinery to further enhance and innovate the manufacturing process. Having been Hoffmann customers for many years – using the Hoffmann MU-2 in the production of handrails and staircases – Paul and Andrew were keen to bring Hoffmann reliability, accuracy and speed into the window-production side of the company. The Hoffmann CB-M end profiler – a resourceful counter-profiling machine for the production of crossbar joints – was designed exactly for this purpose. After various discussions with John Galvin, director at Hoffmann UK, Paul visited the Hoffmann stand at the 2019 Harrogate Woodworking Show for a demonstration of the Hoffmann CB-M. This practical bench-top version is ideal for the small- and medium-size manufacturer. It produces precise, tear-free counter profiling on the ends of Georgian bars in furniture, windows and door manufacturing. Two variable speed, counterrotating router motors – left / right – create the counter profile

on the end of the bar accurately, and fit without chipping or tearing. The variable-speed motors can be adjusted for the optimum speed to produce the best possible finish. Choice of speed is relevant to the profile shape and the wood species.

“We can now cut the glazing bars to suit the required profile of each individual piece, allowing a much tighter joint with less filling needed before finishing”

The machine is supplied without tooling, as each customer will require tooling to suit their own particular profiles. The application of this joint would be in Georgian window design, doors and furniture. When sealed doubleglazed units are used, the profiles are attached to the surface with a dedicated adhesive tape. Paul was so impressed with the demonstration at the show that a sale was agreed there and then. “The Hoffmann CB-M end profiler has certainly increased the quality of the finished product,” he says. “We can now cut the glazing bars to suit the required profile of each individual piece, allowing a much tighter joint with less filling needed before finishing.” Longwood Joinery is using the CB-M to produce Georgian glazing bars on its doors and windows. 01524 841500 info@hoffmann-uk.com www.hoffmann-uk.com

Joinery company saves money by turning waste into free heating A Lancashire joinery company has purchased a woodwaste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on its operating costs. Station Yard Joinery manufactures highend bespoke furniture from its woodworking machine shop in Earby, Lancashire. When the business moved into its current unit about a year ago, the 4500ft2 building, with its high roof, proved to be a cold place to work in the winter months. Having experienced the benefits of woodwaste heaters at a previous company, MD of Station Yard Joinery, Martin Conboy, decided the business should invest in one, so contacted Wood Waste Technology. Following a survey and a quote, the business purchased a WT5 that was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers. It provides much-needed heating for the workshop in winter, but also provides free disposal of the large amount of waste wood generated from the manufacturing process. Having previously invested in a dust collection system and a briquetting machine, Station Yard Joinery also has the ability to recycle some of its waste into briquettes, to be used in the woodwaste heater alongside its general wood

waste. “It makes no sense to spend hundreds of pounds on skips to get rid of our wood waste when we can burn it to convert it into heat for the factory,” says Martin. “We’ve definitely made the right decision for our business by investing in the woodwaste heater. It’s a great piece of kit which will keep us warm and save us money. “In addition, we’re looking forward to recycling our dust into briquettes, which will burn really well in the woodwaste heater!” MD of Wood Waste Technology Kurt Cockroft adds: “It’s great that the team at Station Yard Joinery can burn their waste and briquettes in the heater to generate warmth in the workshop, instead of paying for skips to take it away.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of woodwaste heaters, from small, handfired units to larger, fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of woodwaste heaters, and supplies genuine spares up to -60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau – a German manufacturer of dependable,

Biesse and Lamello – a solid partnership Over the last 15 years, global woodworking machinery supplier, Biesse, and Swiss fixings specialist, Lamello, have been working in partnership to create innovative solutions that have changed the way CNC users join wood and panels, and eliminating the need for glue. Now, with the continual development of Biesse’s bSolid software and Lamello’s awardwinning P-System, it has never been easier to increase productivity and significantly reduce the production time and labour costs commonly associated with furniture manufacturing and assembly. “All of our CNC machines are predisposed to work with Lamello’s P-System,” says Paul Willsher, Wood UK commercial director at Biesse UK. “We pride ourselves on offering innovative and flexible machining solutions to our customers. That’s why our machines have been designed to work effectively with Lamello’s unique CNC connectors.” It is this commitment to problem-solving that has formed the framework of this successful partnership. “When we talk to a customer, we don’t just focus on machinery,” Paul continues. “It’s our job to understand our customer’s processes and, ultimately, find ways to make their manufacturing methods more efficient, whilst improving on quality. Working with forward-thinking companies like Lamello allows us to offer our customers options and not conform to the one-size-fits-all approach.” Available for demonstration at Biesse UK’s Tech Centre in Daventry,

Biesse Rover A

the Brema Eko 2.2 vertical boring machine and Rover A five-axis pod-and-rail CNC showcase just how easy it is to integrate Lamello’s fixings into production. Both offer one-hit machining – with the whole process being completed on one machine – which in turn offers exceptional speed, accuracy and consistency when machining Lamello’s P-system grooves. “When using Lamello’s joining solutions on the Eko 2.2, its c-axis turns the Lamello aggregate in both the X and Y direction, eliminating the need for a second aggregate altogether,” explains Paul. “The machine has also been designed with an eight-position toolchanger that is fully programmable. This means the operator can easily switch between the required tools when changing direction, without incurring additional set-up time. This offers a simple, fast and precise drilling solution for both surface and/or corner processing when using the P-System. “Alternatively, the Rover A uses a five-axis head that enables the P-System grooves to be cut at any angle, offering huge time-saving

potential without impacting on the overall quality.” Both machines are operated by Biesse’s bSolid 3D CAD/CAM software. “Our software really sets us apart,” explains Paul. “When it comes to Lamello’s P-System, it is the only fixing in Biesse’s portfolio that is supplied with its very own macro. It’s been designed exclusively by Biesse, for Biesse, and as a result, we have the ability to adapt the macros for customers if required. “This means if our customers’ production methods change at any point, our software can be adapted to meet their needs. Plus, if they want to start using Lamello at a later date or choose to incorporate a different Lamello fixing into their manufacturing processes, it only takes a few minutes for us to dial into their machine and turn the programme on, completely free of charge. It really is that simple. All that is left is for them is to buy the correct tooling to complete the job.” What is more, the macro is user-friendly, and offers a full simulation of the workpiece during the cutting process. “This

highlights each stage of the cycle and allows for the user to change the position of the workpiece or individual machinery components before running the process fully,” says Paul. “These visual prompts can help the operator pre-empt any programming errors which could cause material wastage and production delays.” Lamello’s macro can also be configured to only show fixings relevant to an individual business. “This simplifies the process even more,” admits Paul. “And, when new product comes to market, we work with Lamello to incorporate the new fixing into our software. The new macro is then supplied to our customers at no additional cost. We even train our customers on how to write their very own Lamello macros, allowing them complete control over their production processes, regardless of the application.” Shaye Chatfield, Lamello area sales manager international for the UK and Ireland, adds: “Partnering with leading machinery manufacturers like Biesse allows us to showcase our CNC connectors in the best possible way – and with demonstrations available at their UK showroom, you can experience the benefits first-hand. “Seeing the whole process in action really brings home how simple, fast and strong our fixings are, and how simple it is to integrate into your production. Whether you’re using a three-, four- or fiveaxis CNC machining centre, Lamello offers a winning solution that can streamline your production and increase efficiencies.” www.lamello.co.uk

SCM’s wide range of joinery machines has been renewed in order to provide its woodworking business partners with even more connected and integrated technological solutions. The innovations mainly concern circular saws and spindle moulders belonging to two of the most state-of-the-art ranges within this SCM business unit – the renowned L’invincibile and class. The circular saws have been enriched with new functions and operating units with increased attention to detail. These innovations orbit around the beating heart of the two ranges that have made the history of SCM joinery machines – the same sturdiness, stability, precision and speed that have made SCM a global market leader for 70 years. Other updates regarding saws and spindle moulders in these ranges are new, innovative control panels that will make SCM joinery machines even more user-friendly, digital and suited to connection and integration needs as part of Industry 4.0. SCM’s edgebanding machines for carpentry have also been renewed, particularly at “the extremes” of the range. The small but highly functional e 20 edgebander for straight and shaped panel machining offers touch-screen control and new devices that further improve the quality of edgebanding, while the larger me 35 and me 40 machines now feature new top-level operating units. There are new software options for the mobile cutting optimiser/sequencer for SCM Thundercut app, with the newly released Android version and further technological innovation to meet the most current demands from 4.0 artisans. >>

Masterwood opens up opportunities in windows and doors Masterwood provides outstanding furniture and joinery production CNC machines which it has developed over many years. Sales director, Dave Kennard, explains that Masterwood now offers a full range for the efficient manufacturing of windows of any shape and size, including traditional box windows, timberframed doors and solid-core doors. These production methods can also be moved up to automated systems for higher capacities. “Since woodworking machines were first introduced, one of the major uses has always been windows and doors, timber-frame doors and, in later years, solid-core doors,” says Dave. “The procedure to make a timber window or door has not changed – once you have your material prepared you need to draw on the timber cut-off lines, mortise and tenon positions, etc. “Then it’s a case of setting and using each machine, the X-Cut, a mortiser, a tenoner, a spindle moulder, and maybe an overhead router. Assembly follows, or in most cases making everything fit together, including cutting out haunches on the band saw and using hand routers for ironmongery like locks, hinges and handles. “As a wood machinist apprentice, I spent many hours drawing lines onto door stiles and then swinging on the old Wadkin chisel mortiser arm to try and cut out all those mortises staring at me on the pallet. Today, life can be so much easier with just one machine – a CNC machining centre.” Masterwood developments For the past 25 years, Masterwood, the Italian machine manufacturer, has evolved its machines to suit today’s demands for bespoke solid timber joinery. An impressive roster of developments include: the use of large-diameter tooling, allowing full-length mortise and tenon joint production; higher-powered router motors, allowing stack tooling to be used; heavy-duty clamps to ensure components are held rigid on the machine bed; more tooling positions to cover the extra tools required for window and door production; automatic bed positioning to speed-up production times and reduce set-up times; and specialised software, to ensure the minimum time from design to production. Masterwood can supply a full range of solutions to suit any customer’s manufacturing requirements, from an entry-level Project 250, through to the top-end Project 565 – a five-axis machine with all possible options for tooling and clamping.

“We have found that customers with CNC machines can now produce batches, or one-off windows and doors, in a fraction of the time that is needed with traditional woodworking machines”

Software showing box window components being loaded onto the CNC bed and optimised

“On top of this,” says Dave, “we can provide dedicated machines like the 4Win, a CNC machine with a unique clamping system for windows where the workpiece never moves. Each component is firmly held in place while every operation is carried out – even the recesses for all the ironmongery – so once the material leaves the machine it can be put together like a jigsaw and is ready for finishing and glazing.” Traditional sliding-sash windows Traditional box windows can be seen in all major towns and cities, and are a traditional part of joinery history. They are, however, notorious for being difficult to produce with traditional methods. “The many varying set-ups and joints are a minefield for costly mistakes,” explains Dave. “Today we have a number of customers who have produced traditional sliding-sash windows on their CNCs, where the machining time for one complete frame and a pair of sashes is under two man-hours. This includes

the pulley cut-outs, frame joints, pocket cut-outs and sash horns. The parts all then fit together with practically no bench or hand work. “Using traditional methods this same job could take a full day, with only limited work being possible on traditional woodworking machines. We have found that customers with CNC machines can now produce batches, or one-off windows and doors, in a fraction of the time that is needed with traditional woodworking machines. Timber frame doors “Timber frame doors are the same in the sense that they require operations on a number of classic machines,” continues Dave. “With our CNC machines, however, everything is done in one big operation – components cut to length, through mortises, haunches, tenons scribes, profiles, and ironmongery housings all performed, including the after assembly once the door parts have been assembled.” www.masterwood.com

Is hardware helping or hindering the sale?

With an increasing number of homeowners swinging to purchase better-quality products, now is a good time to review the hardware fitted, states Coastal Group’s MD, Loren Jenner. “Does the hardware you fit to your doors and windows help to sell them, or hinder you from winning the sale? “In your showroom, one of the first things a homeowner will look at and touch when

considering their new doors and windows, will be the hardware you have fitted,” says Loren. “We’ve heard of multiple instances where a homeowner was considering two options, and the one they went for was the door or window which had the better-quality hardware fitted – namely our Blu Hardware. “This increase in demand for luxury goods and high-end, top-specification products was highlighted recently by Rolls-Royce, when they

recorded their highest-ever sales in 2021. And whilst you mightn’t be selling Rolls-Royce, this swing in consumer demand is something which you cannot afford to ignore. “It’s why we put so much effort into research and development and product innovation at Coastal Group. Saws, blades & cutting technology Vertical panel saws – the essentials

Matt Pearce, MD of TM Machinery, the exclusive UK distributor of Striebig vertical panel saws, explains which factors should be considered when looking for a new vertical panel saw …

Common questions when looking to purchase a new vertical panel saw Customers who have never used a vertical panel saw before, or someone who may not have used a modern vertical panel saw, often ask about the accuracy of the machine. This is because there is a misconception that vertical panel saws are designed for rough cuts only. This isn’t the case. A good-quality vertical panel saw is as accurate as a top-of-the range beam saw or table saw, and we can guarantee that the Striebig’s accuracy is within 0.1mm on every cut. On top of this, the finish of the cut when teamed with a scoring blade means the board can be put straight through an edgebander without further machining or hand-finishing. Can I cut a wide range of materials on a vertical panel saw? Simply, yes. It’s just the tooling that may need to be adapted for individual applications. This can see the vertical panel saw being used to cut marble – this is achieved with a grinder disk and water sprays – glass-reinforced plastic, aluminium, composites, foam and timbers. The list is endless, if you have the right tooling.

How much space do I need to safely use a vertical panel saw? It’s true that a vertical panel saw takes up considerably less floor space than a table saw or beam saw when cutting the same-sized boards. The main reason being, on a vertical panel saw, the board doesn’t move and doesn’t lie flat. When working with jumbo sheets (2800 x 2070mm), a panel saw needs to be big enough to handle a 2070mm board on both sides and have additional space for the operator. This equates to a minimum space requirement of 7 x 3m. An equivalent vertical panel saw requires 4.5 x 2m. A further 450mm can be saved if the saw is wall-mounted. Is the extraction good on a vertical panel saw? Modern vertical panel saws are designed to meet European dust extraction regulations. Unlike older vertical panel saws, sometimes called wall saws, which didn’t benefit from secondary dust collection, modern saws have been designed to significantly limit operator dust exposure. Personal sampling tests are also

regularly completed to monitor dust levels in and around the operating zone. Should I choose a vertical panel saw over a panel saw? There is no doubt that a flat-bed panel saw is a more flexible machine than a vertical panel saw. You can’t cut angles, bevels and mitres on a vertical panel saw – but, if you’re looking to cut large panels into smaller sizes, both vertically and horizontally, and do it quickly and accurately using very little floor space, a vertical panel saw is a better option for you. Unlike a table saw, you’re not reliant on the operator keeping the board flush to the fence at all times to keep accuracy and cut quality high. On a vertical panel saw, the board remains stationary, offering easy handling and less margin for operator error. It also requires considerably less material handling – simply load the panel onto the table once, and slide the saw head through the panel. Larger models also offer adjustable feed speeds, and optimisation software that automates the entire process.

SAWS, BLADES & CUTTING TECHNOLOGY 55

What to consider when purchasing a vertical panel saw The vertical panel saw manufacturer Regardless of what type of machine you’re buying, the best machines are made by companies that specialise in their craft. This is true of any manufacturer. Consider how long the company has been a specialist in the manufacture of this type of machine – if they have a good reputation within the industry, and if they are leaders in their field. Build quality The build quality is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a vertical panel saw. Just like cars, cheaper models often come with a wealth of gadgets to attract you, but it’s what is underneath that’s important. It’s the engineering and build quality that sets machines apart. That’s why we encourage customers to get hands-on with our machines. Don’t buy off a spec sheet – this will not allow you to see and feel the difference. Return on investment This is very individual, but it doesn’t just come down to the cost of the machine. It’s important to consider the overall reliability of your machine and its lifespan, too. Some vertical panel saws can work well for over 30 years. Due to precision engineering, you can also expect fewer errors, less material waste and a better finish, which in turn requires less re-cutting and offers significant time-saving benefits. To get the best return on investment, the machine needs to be reliable, accurate and offer consistently

Striebig Edition 60

high-quality cuts. This can only be achieved with a robust framework. Servicing and repairs You need to consider the aftercare service your supplier offers before you buy a machine from them, and understand why they are different to other suppliers. It’s important to do your research – talk to existing customers – and ask the right questions. How many engineers do they have that have been trained on this machine by the manufacturer? How quickly can they get to you if something happens? Do they have spare parts, and are they readily available? Your choice of vertical panel saw cannot be solely made based on the machine itself. What sets Striebig vertical panel saws apart from the rest? Striebig has been specialising in the design and manufacturing of vertical panel saws for over 70 years. The Swiss manufacturer focuses solely on the production of vertical panel saws, and its commitment to innovation has seen it become an industry standard across Europe. The saw frame, saw beams and heavy-duty saw heads have been precision engineered to offer a reliable, robust and accurate cut. The frame itself is made from a single piece of heavy-duty steel that remains perfectly square throughout the duration of the machine’s lifecycle. This allows Striebig to use durable, fixed rollers on the frame. They are the exact same distance from the top of the frame, and do

“The build quality is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a vertical panel saw. Just like cars, cheaper models often come with a wealth of gadgets to attract you, but it’s what is underneath that’s important. It’s the engineering and build quality that sets machines apart”

not change over the life of the machine. Other manufacturers use blocks that can be trimmed and rollers that lift. You don’t need to do this with a Striebig. This isn’t new innovation, it’s been the same for 60 years. The simplicity and ease of use offered by a Striebig can’t be overlooked. It isn’t overcomplicated, and doesn’t include features that aren’t needed. Its moving frame system has been in place for 52 years. It’s totally mechanical and requires no compressed air. Similarly, the Control model has only had two facelifts since its launch 20 years ago, and the Compact, which was launched 22 years ago, has only undergone three changes, and they haven’t seen the machine’s fundamental features change. They have only been improvements in the technology. The changes Striebig makes aren’t revolutionary, they are evolutionary, and as it continues on this path, the Swiss manufacturer will remain at the forefront of vertical panel saw manufacturing. >>

>> Striebig Edition 60 bottom trim

How to select the right Striebig model What model is right for my business? We tailor each machine to our customer’s requirements. We ask you for a clear idea of what you want to achieve, and with that we can guide you to the best model for you. Every model is built around a single, precisionengineered welded frame. Effectively, this gives you the platform to cut board at 90° without any vibration, and it offers a cutting accuracy within 0.1mm. All models are made to the same tolerances regardless of their cost, and come with an automatic moving frame and fixed transport rollers. As well as the same heavy-duty ergonomics, additional features like scoring saws and digital read-outs are also built exactly the same way on every model. As you go up the range, what you get is more power, a bigger cut depth, more sophistication and more automation. Non-standard machine sizes can also be specified up to 800mm taller and 6m longer, if required. What level of automation do I need? There are a lot of advantages to automation, but not always ones you’d expect. It’s a common misconception that automation will halve your production times. but it’s important to remember that the saw needs to carry out the same cutting process, regardless of whether this is done manually or automatically. In a vertical panel saw the automation works continuously, making light work of volume cuts. With minimal operator intervention, it offers a better cut quality due to the saw’s automated feed speeds, and it can cut unaided while an unskilled operator loads and unloads the saw. Automated features also protect the saw against operator misuse – it won’t let you do things in

the wrong order or cut incorrectly – leading to fewer breakdowns and repair bills. Striebig’s Base and Expert Cut optimisation software can also improve your workflow and reduce the skill level needed to optimise production. Optimisation software, which can be retrofitted to an existing machine if required, can create cutting lists that direct both the machine and the operator. It can also generate labels with barcodes, QR codes or descriptions for effective processing and stock management. Additional stock and waste management software can also be integrated into this for extremely efficient production. What are the most popular extras on a Striebig? Striebig’s scoring saw is different to others in the market. It’s a proper belt-driven, fully adjustable, high-speed scoring unit, like you would expect on a top-quality panel saw or beam saw. It is not a double-cut score system or a knife system. It is the same design on all models, regardless of their size or cost. The Striebig’s full wooden backing system (TRK) also sets the Striebig brand apart. The TRK system improves dust extraction by providing a dust capture behind the panel, while also fully supporting the sheet material. Nothing beats this design when cutting thin or flexible panels. Other machines have supports placed 6in apart, which can lead to thin materials flexing. With the Striebig’s wooden backing, the support is never more than a few millimetres from the edge of the blade, leaving no opportunity for the panel to flex. Striebig vertical panel saws can also cut specialist materials, thanks to their adjustable motor speed, rotation speed of tooling and feed

speeds. The machine is equally as effective cutting through thick materials as it is grooving ACM. It can also be built to cut materials as deep as 130mm. Is a Striebig vertical panel saw affordable? Your budget is always a factor with any purchase. We don’t pitch a machine to match your budget. If we can’t supply a machine that works to your specification and budget, we will be open and honest with you. For many of our customers, finance is often a good solution. We don’t supply finance – we specialise in selling and servicing woodworking machinery – but we work with a well-respected woodworking machinery broker who is experienced in helping the industry. It’s often an affordable and simple solution when purchasing new and used woodworking machinery. Why should I work with TM Machinery? 58 SAWS, BLADES & CUTTING TECHNOLOGY

Vollmer offers two-in-one solution Cutting tool manufacturers have always had the inconvenience of producing solid carbide and PCD cutting tools on two separate machines – until Vollmer introduced its VHybrid concept. Now, Vollmer has eradicated this issue for cutting tool manufacturers, with its flexible new VHybrid 260 solution, which can grind carbide tools and erode PCD tools – all in one machine. The exceptional new Vollmer VHybrid 260 combines the technologies of an innovative grinding machine and a powerful erosion machine, making it possible to switch easily between erosion and grinding functions. Utilising Vollmer’s unique, multilayered machining technology, which was first proven in the VGrind series of machines, the vertical alignment of two spindles is a groundbreaking arrangement that allows the grinding and electrode wheel sets to precisely pivot the C-axis, ensuring optimal results. This configuration allows users to combine both processes. If the tool requires both grinding and erosion, the VHybrid 260 can create one complete and highly efficient machining process for all tool production requirements. The multi-layered spindle configuration allows the efficient grinding of carbide tools with diameters of up to 150mm on the top spindle, whereas the bottom spindle can accommodate both grinding and erosion. This enables the efficient machining of carbide or PCD tools up to a diameter of 150mm, thanks to the highperformance and finely tuned VPulse EDM erosion generator, which maximises productivity and performance while reducing production costs. This ultra-precise erosion generator delivers surface finishes to a roughness of 0.1μRa, for the best-possible cutting tool quality, while electrode calibration and wear control that combines with a dressing device provide fully automated processing with

Vollmer VHybrid 260

“The exceptional new Vollmer VHybrid 260 combines the technologies of an innovative grinding machine and a powerful erosion machine” unwavering quality levels. Quality is built into every facet of the VHybrid 260, and Vollmer demonstrates this with its innovative ‘wall concept’ which provides the highest-possible rigidity and vibration damping through its concrete polymer foundation. This is complemented by the effective spindle and motor-cooling technology, that creates greater thermal stability

for unparalleled precision and power, while the vertical spindle configuration eradicates issues related to fixing and floating bearings. Automation and ease of use are factored into every element of the new VHybrid 260, and this includes the tool-loading and unloading facilities. Here, Vollmer offers several options with its HC4 chain magazine, with space for

39 HSK-63A tools or up to 158 shank-type tools with a maximum weight of 5kg. Alternately, for manufacturers producing larger tools, Vollmer offers the HC4 Plus, which provides space for 160 shank-type tools or 40 HSK-63A toolholders with a tool diameter of 80mm. With larger tool diameters of up to 150mm, there is space for 20 HSK-63A toolholders with a maximum weight for individual tools up to 10kg. The automation options also extend to the eight-tool grinding wheel changer, which ensures the right grinding wheel for the right tool is always supplied to the work envelope, with no manual intervention. As an option, coolant nozzles can be automatically exchanged with the wheel sets on both spindles. From an operator ergonomics and ease-of-use perspective, Vollmer once again excels with its multi-function handwheel for easy axis adjustment, simple touchscreen control, optimal machine access and heightadjustable tilting control platform. This ease of use extends to the modularly designed ExLevel PRO software, which allows efficient, fast and easy machining of a wide range of tools in both grinding and eroding operations. This simplicity extends to tool simulation that can be set up directly at the machine or remotely. To further enhance performance, precision and quality, Vollmer provides a multitude of optional extras. These include linear scales on all axes for even greater precision levels and performance, plus a steady rest to optimise grinding results when processing longer cutting tools that have the potential to deflect. Vollmer also offers automated gripper compensation as an in-process solution. This provides maximum precision when loading and unloading tools and reduction sleeves, reduces wear, and maximises stability. 0115 949 1040 www.vollmer-group.com

Products Creative products and a customercentric ethos underpin family edgebanding firm’s reputation Cadre Components is a family-run edgebanding business based in Warrington, Cheshire. Established in 1998 by Steve Clark, today the company is run by his daughters, Helen Halliday, who deals with the purchasing and sales, and Sarah Talbot, who heads finance – their father having retired. “We service the furniture manufacturing industry, or indeed any industry that may have the use for plastic edgebanding material, predominantly ABS. This can be any type of company, from a yacht production company to kitchen manufactures and coffinmakers,” explains Helen. “We offer edgebandings in a variety of widths and thickness, ranging from 0.452mm thickness and in widths ranging from 12- through to 350mm wide. We also offer a special matching service – should a product be required that is not already listed on our website or available, then we look to see what options are obtainable. In addition to this, we also offer a cutting service should customers have their own material that needs to be cut – we will do this for them too.”

Helen Halliday, purchasing and sales manager

In a sector not immune to tales of customer frustration, it is pleasing to hear Cadre’s focus on customer service. Helen says: “As a company, I believe we are extremely conscientious. For us, going above and beyond for our customers is very much the norm. We can offer short lead times for special production items and quick colour-matching services – this can be for patterns ranging from wood effects through to marble and concrete effects, and only very rarely do we fail on matches – even for small quantities. We also work very closely with customers to obtain their specific requirements – we can offer this service within a 3-6 week lead time, sometimes sooner depending on the requirements.”

‘With an eye to trends, the furniture industry is forever changing with colourways and fashion, and as a company, we try to ensure we are always up to date with the trend changes introducing new colour matches where needed’

Cadre Components offers an effective colour-matching service for its clients

This level of service has been severely tested over the last two years. “Over the past 18 months we have definitely seen ups and downs, especially as market prices have been so unstable,” Helen points out. “However, as a company we have managed to successfully navigate through Brexit and Covid, and our thoroughly professional team continues to work exceptionally hard in order to supply quality products to all our customers. “We offer a next-day delivery service on many standard stock items, and we can even offer same-day delivery in some cases. Stock items are usually delivered within 7-10 days as standard, and special production options for new matches can usually be obtained within a maximum of six weeks.” In terms of the influences Cadre Components says it is currently working with, Helen says that an ongoing battle against price fluctuation with

raw materials persists, but that the company continues to work closely with its suppliers to monitor the situation “With an eye to trends, the furniture industry is forever changing with colourways and fashion, and as a company, we try to ensure we are always up to date with the trend changes, introducing new colour matches where needed,” she notes. With its solid company ethos grounded in delivering excellent customer service and firstclass products, Cadre Components looks set to improve its market standing moving forwards. “We’re hoping that 2022 brings some normality back to the world, and our industry, after the last 18 months of disruption,” concludes Helen. 01942 716600 info@edgings.co.uk www.cadre-components.co.uk

Egger – worktops that offer more Traditionally, worktops were only found in the kitchen, but due to innovation, design developments and budget-friendly solutions, they can now be found across multiple applications. Egger’s collection of worktops brings fresh opportunities, with a stylish range of durable and hygienic laminate surfaces. 34 carefully chosen decors, three thicknesses and two profiles make up this sophisticated collection of worktops. Realistic reproductions in 16, 25 and 38mm include oak, marble, stone and granite, offering a low-maintenance, cost-effective alternative to solid surfaces. A highlight of the Egger Worktop Collection 2020 is the elegant range of six striking 16mm square-edge material surfaces. Double-sided, the worktops are perfect for the creation of waterfall islands, shelving and side panels. Matching decors are also available as a 38mm postformed worktop, so an on-trend, thick and thin finish can be achieved. Four Halifax Oak decors, from Egger’s popular Feelwood range, are available as 38mm squareedge worktops. Realistic to the touch, the design and texture perfectly align to produce a surface almost indistinguishable from real oak. Egger’s standard worktop length is 4100mm, but the 38mm postformed worktops are also available as 3050mm. Offered in 24 on-trend woodgrain and material decors, this size is optimised for easy transportation and fitting.

Suitable for kitchens, bathroom, offices and retail spaces, there is a finish to suit every interior. As a stylish alternative to tiling, matching upstands and splashbacks are available for all decors. They create a co-ordinated finish, while being simple to look after and maintain. Matching edging is available for all decors, so a 38mm postformed worktop can easily be adapted to create a square-edge finish. If a co-ordinated look is required, 17 worktops have matching melamine-faced chipboard (MFC) available from UK stock, which can be used for door frontals and carcasses. Matching laminate is also available for all decors. As part of Egger’s commitment to the environment, all worktops are PEFC certified and made using renewable material (88%). The 25mm square-edge and 38mm postformed worktops can also be recycled following use. The range has undergone rigorous testing, and has been awarded the prestigious FIRA Gold award.

“Our worktops can be used across a number of different applications,” comments Elliott Fairlie, head of decor management, UK and Ireland. “Whilst they are still a popular choice for residential kitchen projects, we’re now seeing them used regularly in commercial spaces. Student accommodation and office projects are specifying worktops for desks, retail spaces are using them for counters and the hospitality sector is using them for tables. “Our carefully considered, trend-driven range is the next generation of laminate worktops, offering a cost-effective, low-maintenance alternative to solid surfaces.” A range of installation accessories has been developed alongside this collection to provide easy access to essential items. This includes two installation kits, and EGGERSeal waterproof sealant and adhesive. If used in conjunction with the EGGER Worktop Fitting Guide, the worktop is guaranteed for 10 years. www.egger.com/worktops

Multiplex edgings from Ostermann

“Multiplex boards are a high-quality option for furnituremaking due to their stability, flexibility and distinctive edges” Multiplex boards are a high-quality option for furnituremaking due to their stability, flexibility and distinctive edges. With furniture edgings, the classic plywood look can also be applied perfectly to a particle board. Ostermann has several edging materials available for this – ABS, acrylic and real wood. For those wishing to upgrade the edges of chipboard panels with a plywood look, Ostermann offers numerous solutions, from ABS and 3D acrylic to wood veneer and real wood edgings. Each edging material has its advantages. Carpenters/cabinetmakers can access an overview of the entire multiplex range available from Ostermann by entering the search term “#Highlights01” on Ostermann’s website – www.ostermann.eu. The versatile classic – ABS A classic edging material, ABS offers craftspeople an extensive variety of dimensions and decors. Highly practical, all Ostermann ABS edgings with multiplex decor are available in various widths up to 100mm, and most are also available in two thicknesses – 1 and 2mm. With the Multiplex Birch smooth decor, Ostermann also offers a thin ABS edging in 0.4mm thickness.

Design highlights The ABS edging, Multiplex Plywood smooth – which renders the classic multiplex decor particularly vividly with its darker, fine details – is definitely worth considering. Another design tip from the Ostermann experts is the ABS edging – Multiplex black-white. The monochrome plywood look allows black or white particle boards to be transformed into special designer pieces. Alternatively, the ABS edging – Compact-Style Multiplex - white smooth is also available for white chipboard panels. The white side stripes of the edging perfectly complement a white particle board. In the middle, the edging has a wide strip with attractive multiplex decor. The appearance of a high-quality multiplex board is created at the edges, pressed on both sides with homogeneously coloured white laminate. With depth effect – 3D acrylic Thanks to their printed decor, 3D acrylic edgings from Ostermann give an impressive appearance of depth. And, of course, Ostermann also offers a plywood-look edging in this material. The 3D acrylic Real Multiplex smooth edging comes in standard widths of 23, 33, 43 and 100mm, and in thicknesses of 1 and 2mm.

To continue the elegant look of the linoleum desks at the edging, a 33 x 2mm Multiplex Beech veneer edging was chosen to finish the board

Genuine and elegant – wood veneer and real wood Multiplex real wood edgings are characterised by naturalness and sustainability. They provide an elegant finish for high-quality board surfaces such as linoleum. The rolls are available in beech and birch in widths of 24, 30, 33 and 43mm, and in various thicknesses, with a roll length of 50m. Carpenters/cabinetmakers can also find Multiplex edgings as stock items at Ostermann. • The Multiplex Beech veneer edging is available as a sanded, steamed and unsteamed variant, with dimensions of 24 x 2mm and a length of 3100mm • The Real Multiplex Birch sanded veneer edging is available in widths of 23 or 43mm, with a thickness of 2.65mm and a length of 4000mm • The wood veneer edging Multiplex Beech + Maple sanded is available with a width of 42mm, a thickness of 10mm, and a length of 3100mm Ordered quickly – delivered quickly With a proven fast delivery service for stock items, Ostermann supplies furniture edgings in any length starting from 1m and in any width up to 100mm. Furniture trends for 2022 – Kronospan’s Komplete Kollection

Bronze Expressive Oak

It is a new year, and Leeds-based decorative panel product supplier, Lawcris, sees a definite wave of momentum as things continue full speed ahead into 2022. The company has observed an evolving union with nature emerge throughout the past two years – a theme that is highly visible within its refreshed product portfolio. “It is not hard to understand why this bond is stronger than ever,” says Lauren Barker, head of marketing and design at Lawcris. “With this gritted determination to live with the new norm, folk are looking to reconnect with nature, embrace the use of calming colours and push out stress-inducing factors, such as clutter, by hiding it away with clever storage.” Lawcris has been working closely with key manufacturer, Kronospan, and has launched an MFC range entitled Komplete Kollection, which embodies everything that 2022 is all

about. Nature is at the forefront, with 52 different shades of woodgrain, six materials and five colours. Lawcris is proud to say that the collection is 100% exclusive, meaning that no other manufacturers have these unique decors. Walnuts and dark oaks for cabinetry have been lined up as this year’s favourites, and with nine to choose from in the Komplete Kollection, it is the Fireside Select Walnut that has made the first move, gaining major popularity in the first few weeks of 2022. Not only does the rich grain give a natural warmth, but the dark tones ooze a sense of luxury. This is very closely followed by the reputable Bronze Expressive Oak. These decors both have the PW texture – an elegant finish of a finely sanded and varnished veneer. A play on textures with a mix-and-match effect has seen customers take on Kronospan’s Flow

material decors and pair them with woodgrains. The Flow collection – five very different urbaninspired decors – have high-end, distinctive appearances of distressed concretes and metals, perfect for on-trend wall cladding. There are two decors which have been particularly popular with Lawcris’ customers in 2022. The Silk Flow and Concrete Flow, with their cool neutrality, are a perfect support act for warm, traditional oaks such as Gold Harbour Oak and Honey Castello Oak. Within the home/office area, Lawcris perceives that stress-relieving greens will be setting a relaxing mood, while preserving motivation levels, and soothing blues will be perfecting a calm and safe environment. When it comes to furniture, customers can pair these colours with reclaimed wood, vintage furniture and handmade decors which are full of personality. Distressed and worn pieces add character and contrast to more modern and neutral elements. Lawcris has seen extraordinary interest in the Grange Oaks – a set of three expressive decors inspired by repurposed planks. They combine beautifully with various shades of green and blue for an original and characterful finish. The most popular decor so far in 2022, Platinum Grange Oak, provides years of weathered exposure, followed by Colonial Grange Oak which presents years of industrial heritage, while Sand Grange Oak offers gentle rustic signs of age.

The Flow collection

This lure back to nature has also sparked an interest in authenticity of the woodgrains used, with customers looking for details such as knots and cracks. The Evoke Oaks within the Kollection have filled this void. The warm and natural Coast Evoke Oak and the darker, almost monochrome Fossil Evoke Oak have a timeworn feel, featuring cracks and splits, with what appears to be black filler repairs. This gives the decors a depth of colour, rusticity and character that brings warmth and harmony to traditional or contemporary spaces. Last but not least is Raw Endgrain Oak,

the perfect woodgrain for those seeking out individuality. Its calm, natural characteristics ensure that it is versatile, but its unique markings – where the end grain flawlessly appears through the design – is garnering real interest. All of the aforementioned decors are part of the Komplete Kollection, and are in one brochure available only from Lawcris. They are all in stock, with matching edging available. Felt textile style Material mixing is right on-trend, and felts are the breakout star. Renolit has created Haithabu Light Grey and Haithabu Dark Grey, with an embossed fleece surface that looks and feels just like felt and adds a cosy cottage vibe to a design, without being kitschy. While they look just like textiles, the Haithabu Greys are easy to clean and very robust, making them the perfect fit for any room, as well as shopfitting or office applications. Stone Gran Sasso Light Grey is a stone design with a visually matching undulating tactile surface texture. The design looks like it has been created by rain and wind flowing across over time, wearing away small craters. A depth of field produced by light/dark contrasts emphasises the structure of the design, creating a liveliness with a natural touch that resembles stone or a roughly plastered wall.

Factors to consider when investing in dust extraction Investing in the right dust extraction is not always a straightforward process. Here, Matt Pearce, MD of TM Machinery and the exclusive distributor of AL-KO dust extraction units in the UK, breaks down the key factors to consider before making a purchase ...

AL-KO’s high-performance Jet filter

71

“When it comes to choosing the right dust extraction model for your business, it’s important we ask our customers the right questions,” begins Matt. “What material are you processing? How many machines do you need to run at once? Will the machines run all day? And how big is your workshop? These questions will ultimately determine the right dust extraction solution for you. “From a customer’s standpoint, it is important to consider plans for the future. Are you looking to add more or different machines to your factory floor, increase production or change your offering? Thinking long-term could save you time and money, but we appreciate this is often easier said than done.” That is where mobile units like the AL-KO Power Unit range come into their own. With a static system, future expansion is not always straightforward. “You have to consider ducting extensions, space for a bigger unit and design and installation costs,” Matt explains. “With a movable unit, you have the flexibility to add and use multiple power units within a workshop as and when required. It’s like a plug-and-play concept. It’s quick and easy to install, and it only requires a small footprint. “In addition to this, you must consider if your investment is future-proofed,” Matt continues. “Each AL-KO Power Unit model has been designed and tested in accordance with the European Norm EN 16770 – a regulation that was updated in December 2018 to highlight new

“We can offer our customers the very best German-engineered dust extraction solutions that will stand the test of time and the ongoing changes to workplace law in the UK”

risks associated with modern manufacturing – as well as all national standards and CE requirements. This means AL-KO’s range has been designed to return air that’s far cleaner than the requested value UK manufacturers need to meet by 2024 – making the AL-KO brand a sound, future-proofed investment for any manufacturer.” Then there are the day-to-day running costs, ongoing cleaning and maintenance to consider. “With energy bills rocketing, it has never been more important to consider a greener, more cost-effective solution,” warns Matt. “Customers often focus on motor sizes when investing in a new extraction system. However, with improved air flow and fan housing design this is becoming less relevant, and doesn’t reflect the overall performance

of a dust extraction unit. AL-KO’s optimised fan housing, coupled with GS and H2 marked energy-efficient motors, save energy while still guaranteeing 100% air recirculation without loss of temperature.” Each Power Unit incorporates AL-KO’s Opti Jet® – a unique, high-performance filter-cleaning system that offers optimum filter cleaning while using the least amount of compressed air possible. Its design – which centres around a large air surge tank – has also been created to reduce energy consumption without comprising on performance. “The Power Unit range also offers integrated frequency converters,” says Matt. “This means the fan only produces the required flow, saving energy and increasing the service life and overall >> health of the filter.”

Safety features should also be taken into account, as well as any unexpected extra-cost safety options. “One of the main risks when extracting wood dust is the threat of explosions and fire,” explains Matt. “To tackle this, AL-KO’s units feature an outer shell that is pressure shock resistant, meaning it can be installed in the workshop without external explosion relief. “Power Unit models from 250 upwards are also equipped with a thermal sensor and integrated fire-extinguishing system. Plus, all models now

The Dust Compartment reduces dust exposure when it comes to emptying the dust from inside the housing

come with dust compartment sealing plates as standard, and optional filling level sensors to reduce dust exposure when emptying and to prevent blockages inside the filter housing.” Finally, Matt firmly believes that aftercare should not be overlooked. “Does your extraction brand have specialists in the UK that can come and service your unit quickly? Do they carry spare parts? And do they offer a warranty? For TM Machinery, the answer is simply, yes. “As the exclusive UK distributor of AL-KO

dust extraction units, we know our product range inside out, and our engineers have been trained directly by AL-KO. We offer a reliable, trusted service, which is a must when working with any business. As a result, we can offer our customers the very best German-engineered dust extraction solutions that will stand the test of time and the ongoing changes to workplace law in the UK.” www.tmmachinery.co.uk

Ergonomics to go! Cardboard boxes, crates or sacks: The JumboFlex Picker packs them all!! The mobile lifting system with its 3600 articulated jib is the ideal helper for order picking, stacking and distribution.

Ergonomics to go, from Schmalz The JumboFlex Picker, developed by Schmalz and already in use within multiple applications, offers a self-sufficient solution for mobile order picking of packages weighing up to 40kg. In applications where it is not possible for the goods to be presented directly to the vacuum tube lifter, a standard industrial truck is all that is required to move the JumboFlex Picker technology and the pallet to the desired place. The various components which make up the JumboFlex Picker include the basic module (which houses a battery), a vacuum generator and the necessary control technology. Attached to this are forks – which Schmalz offers in a Euro version and for GMA pallets in two lengths, for one or two pallets – and a lifting column, which is mounted either on the left or right of the basic module. The electrically adjustable lifting column increases the operating range of the tube lifter during use, and this can then be retracted when required for transport. The lifting column carries a crane jib to which the ergonomic vacuum tube lifter is mounted. To move the JumboFlex Picker to its place of use, users simply drive under it with their existing industrial truck – such as an order picker. The patented design of the crane jib, with its articulated arm, allows the JumboFlex Picker to be used with vehicles that have a double fork length and can pick up to two pallets.

Quick and easy operation thanks to automated processes As is typical for all Schmalz technologies, operation is both intuitive and safe. Once the mobile JumboFlex Picker is on-site, the user simply starts the vacuum tube lifter via the SRC radio remote control. Immediately, four support legs on the base module extend automatically and stabilise the mobile vacuum handling system. When being moved to another location, the supports retract again automatically as soon as the extension arm is locked in its parking position. At the same time, the JumboFlex powers down. These automated operations save time and speed up the handling cycles. The user can view all relevant information on the operating mode, battery charge and the position of the lifting column on a touchscreen display. Control operations are also carried out via the monitor. Soft keys give the user access to the most important functions, even when wearing gloves. The smooth-running articulated arm design of the crane jib makes it possible for the user to reach workpieces in a radius of around 1600mm. In addition, the electrically-operated lifting column provides around 1300mm of lifting range for the vacuum tube lifter, making it possible to quickly and easily configure the unit for the handling tasks required. For example, when using a standard gripper, a maximum

“The JumboFlex Picker offers a self-sufficient solution for mobile order picking of packages weighing up to 40kg”

The new JumboFlex Picker puts the ergonomic vacuum tube lifter where it is needed – along with the vacuum generator and battery

gripping height of up to 1800mm can be achieved. As part of Schmalz’s current product range, the JumboFlex vacuum tube lifter is equipped ex-works with the company’s familiar quickchange adapter. This means that the right gripper is always available for every workpiece. When moving the unit through doors, gates or other access areas, the lifting column can be lowered to less than 2100mm – so the mobile vacuum tube lifter, which is less than 1m wide, fits through any door. Self-sufficiency through on-board battery The JumboFlex Picker draws its energy from a powerful lead-acid battery, a type which is also used on industrial trucks. Its capacity is sufficient for six hours of continuous operation, and in most cases is capable of completing a full shift. Intermediate charging is not required as, for multi-shift operation, the battery can simply be exchanged for a new, fully charged battery. The JumboFlex Picker is in demand for applications where a stationary solution cannot reach, for block and floor storage, or as an in-house goods distribution solution based on the milkrun principle. As a left- or right-hand version, and combinable with different forks for the US and EU markets, this innovative mobile ergonomic solution from Schmalz fits into every modern logistics concept. 0161 266 1115 schmalz@schmalz.co.uk www.schmalz.com

Updates Abtec’s abrasives expertise and collaborative approach sees optimal results for customers Abtec is a specialist supplier of abrasives and associated products to the woodworking and other industry sectors. Working with all sizes of businesses and organisations all over the world, the aim of the East Anglian business is to use its expertise to formulate the right abrasive product for each customer, whatever the work challenge. Founded in 2002, Abtec is a family business, with three generations still working for the company. With offices in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk, Abtec started out very much as a local business, but with the launch of its website and monthly newsletter, the abrasives specialist now operates throughout the UK, and now boasts a growing international client base. As a family company, Abtec is quite rightly proud to offer a high level of personal service, commenting that this is something that is central to its ethos. Working with a diverse customer base ranging from automotive, marine and aerospace companies through to DIY enthusiasts, the agriculture and oil and gas sectors, imbues Abtec with valuable insight and experience, some of which in turn is brought to bear for its woodworking customer base. This is perhaps what marks the company out from some of its peers – the desire and ability to find the right product specification for that customer to create an optimal result. This is achieved in a simple, yet highly effective collaborative manner, whereby Abtec, in conjunction with its supply partners, formulates the ideal abrasive product for customers based on a range of criteria, including:

Efficiency Producing an abrasive product that achieves the most desirable cost/performance benefits. Safety Advising on the safety benefits of branded regulatory abrasive products. All of Abtec’s abrasive products used on power tools conform to the Organisation for Safety in Abrasives. Reducing costs Increased investment in stock helps Abtec keep costs low by providing customer stock arrangements and generous quantity discounts. Delivery Abtec offers a wide range of seamless delivery options for customers worldwide, from small packages through to palletised and containerised shipments. Training Abtec prides itself on both its internal staff training and external training for its customers. The external training for the all-important safe use of abrasives has, over recent years, been expanded to include not only the UK and Ireland, but customers worldwide.

Customer services One of Abtec’s great strengths is its friendly, knowledgeable staff, evidenced by the fact that the company was a finalist in the Cambridgeshire Fenland Business Awards for customer services, and the winner of a top business award for export. As the company states on its website, it sees itself as a global solutions provider and supplier of branded precision abrasive products and training for the woodworking industry. Abtec’s roster of suppliers includes Norton, SIA Abrasives, Hermes, Saint Gobain Abrasives, Tyrolit, Flexovit, Dronco and Abracs – all of which are recognised and trusted brands. In addition to which, evidencing its collaborative outlook, Abtec can also help create custom-made solutions with a fast turnround for its clients – many of which often see performance gains and a quicker return on investment than imagined – and all this makes a tangible difference for Abtec’s customers, underlining the Cambridgeshire and Norfolk firm’s customer-first perspective. 0800 027 1928 (UK) +44 (0)1945 585500 (overseas) sales@abtecindustries.com www.abtec4abrasives.com

Quasar under high pressure to satisfy customer demand When it comes to commercial outfitting, highpressure laminates (HPLs) are undoubtedly a favourable choice for those looking for something outstanding for items such as kitchen doors. A fantastic range of patterns, colours, designs and textures means that HPLs are able to supply outfitters with a product that combines function and style. Regardless of whether a customer is looking for bright and bold, or sleek and subtle, there is something to suit everyone’s taste. Quasar has noted that compact laminates are particularly popular at the moment, offering the perfect and, perhaps more importantly, the most cost-effective alternative to marble, stone and composite and wood surfaces. Over the last year, Quasar customers have been visiting its state-of-the-art showroom at Shivers Business Park in Toomebridge, County

Derry/Londonderry, in their droves to source that unique, special HPL that will bring a touch of class and complete functionality to their commercial premises. “I think the real value of HPL is its versatility,” says Quasar’s founder, Alan Dickson. “HPL is so versatile, it’s incredible. It suits practically any customer’s choice of style. Whether they’re looking for rustic charm to contemporary elegance, HPL has something for everyone. “It’s also extremely robust, and this is vitally important when it comes to commercial outfitting. The great thing about HPL is that, although it’s strong, resilient and incredibly robust, it’s also incredibly stylish, so it’s a win-win for all concerned!” Alan is particularly proud of one aspect of the range of HPLs that he offers ... the bespoke range of laminate sheets that are made to order.

“Our HPL designs provide customers with a unique and bespoke quality that will suit any commercial project, regardless of style and colour palette”

Not only does this provide the customer with complete control over what they need, but Alan and his specialist team are on hand at all times to provide advice and support. “Our HPL designs provide customers with a unique and bespoke quality that will suit any commercial project, regardless of style and colour palette,” he continues. “As I said, our HPL ranges offer commercial outfitters with a fabulous range of HPLs that are not only stainresistant, but also add a touch of sophistication, style and, let’s face it, on occasion, glamour, to any commercial project! “Indeed, we’ve recently introduced an extended range of HPLs, with 50 different plain colour options in a range of textures, and 25 realistic woodgrains including both natural wood textures and horizontal grains. When you factor in our 13 on-trend concrete, pattern and metallic designs – all of which can be delivered within 48 hours – you know that you’re onto a winner! “Our two sheet sizes offered across most of our range – 2440 x 1200 x 0.8mm and 30350 x 1300 x 0.8mm – mean that there’s a cost-effective option for practically every commercial outfitter who is planning and costing a project. “All of our HPLs have been designed using a synchronised, revolutionary press process which creates a product that has an outstanding natural look and finish, and we’re extremely proud of the products that we provide to our customers. We’re delighted to say that we can offer a style that meets the needs and specifications of every customer that comes through our door!” Quasar was particularly delighted to announce recently that the company had introduced another new, exciting range to its veneer offering. “Veneered laminates are the latest addition to our veneer stable,” says Alan. “The range is absolutely fantastic and makes the veneer even more robust and hardwearing. “Our collection offers 33 patterns that represent a range of the types of wood found in nature. Every pattern is finished to bring out the natural beauty and colour of each type of wood, and there’s also the opportunity to add edgebanding in the same material, thereby generating solutions that stand out in any setting – commercial or domestic. “When it comes to either commercial or domestic outfitting, what more could a customer want? Fabulous products, a bespoke range on offer and excellent customer service – at Quasar, we have the complete package to enhance the image, design and versatility of wood!” 02879 659694 marketing@wearequasar.com

Keeping the UK woodworking industry informed during the Covid-19 pandemic Following the announcement last year that the W Exhibition would not go ahead in 2022 but will revert to September 24-27th 2023, Chris Franklin, MD at Ranheat Engineering, continues his series of articles by looking at other ways to keep people informed as to the importance of using alternative energy to replace fossil fuels within the woodworking industry … “The woodworking industry can take the lead by ensuring that no wood, as a by-product of a wood-machining process, ends up as landfill, but is instead used as a free source of heat for industrial premises. This will see the industry making a real contribution to a net-zero carbon footprint by the effective use of biomass for industrial heating systems. There are also significant savings on disposal and transport costs to be made by installing an in-house wood combustion system. “So, without the W exhibition for another 18 months, how will people find out about the equipment available? “Ranheat, for one, has invested heavily in a new website that is designed to be tablet and smartphone friendly. “People are increasingly changing to internetbased sources of information with the absence of traditional exhibitions as a method of finding out what equipment is out there. The rapid spread of the new variants of Covid-19 also requires measures to keep people apart and safe, but still get the information to them as to what is available. “Ranheat is the UK’s longest-established manufacturer of industrial wood-fired boilers and industrial wood-fired heaters, and is also a market leader. As such, we felt it appropriate to make our website presence as simple and easy to use as possible, so that customers can remain up to date with the latest and most efficient equipment available, even in the absence of an exhibition over the next year. “Covid restrictions have also changed, not only in terms of how we inform people about the wide range of wood combustion equipment available, but also how we work with and design our installations with our customers. With as many staff as possible working from home, the use of Teams for meetings, internet-based phone systems enable calls and information to be directed to the best person, even if working from home. “Ranheat has increased the use of digital scanners for producing accurate 3D drawings using laser scanners. The scanners are set up and accurately produce drawings with only

Extracts from Ranheat’s new website

“Ranheat, for one, has invested heavily in a new website that is designed to be tablet and smartphone friendly” one person needed to visit the site with the scanner, and no need to interact with the on-site workforce, reducing the risk of transmission to customers’ sites. Regular lateral flow testing and the use of face coverings are still part of the protective measures being utilised. “The Renewable Heat Incentive closed for new applicants in 2021. Several projects that Ranheat was working on have been granted Covid extensions until March 2022, as they could demonstrate that the installation had been

delayed by Covid, mainly due to all local authority civil servants working from home, causing delays with planning and permit applications. At the moment, no replacement scheme offering financial support for the installation of biomass boilers has been announced. However, with the impending rises in energy prices for gas and oil, there has never been a better time to invest in biomass boilers and heaters.” 01604 750005 sales@ranheat.com www.ranheat.com

Salvamac Air&Painting – another step forward With over 30 years of experience and a reputation for quality, Salvamac has become a market leader, with an offer that ranges from portable dust extractors to sleeve or cartridge filters of maximum efficiency, from robust spray booths to customised and complete technological systems. The Salvamac Air&Painting division saw tremendous growth in 2021 with the move to a new, larger building of 2500m2 on a total area of 5000m2. “We have much more space to increase our production and our stock, but we are also investing in new technologies, such as in a new production system that includes a very powerful laser cutting machine and a folding line with fully automatic loading and unloading,” explains Marco Trasente, head of the division. “In particular, the most recent projects and products also confirm Salvamac’s success in extraction systems – especially the high-tech extractors of the SuperDep series.

Salvamac’s Grande filter

The Salvamac Air&Painting division has moved to significantly larger premises

“These special filters are designed and manufactured using the highest technologies. They are very versatile filter groups which take up little space, are suitable for indoor and outdoor use, and are extremely functional in extracting dust and woodchips.” On the market for over 30 years, and always oriented towards high-quality products, Salvamac is continuously gaining ground in various markets, with an offer that – remaining faithful to the company’s philosophy – ranges from filters and dust extraction to systems for painting booths, and which includes solutions for companies of different sizes and needs. Christian and Ziemowit, the owners of Salvamac Group, add: “Our company plays a key role in safeguarding and protecting the health of workers in the workplace by supplying air filtration plants, painting booths, filtering units and other equipment designed to purify work environments in Italy, the UK and around the world. “Our team of consultants and technicians analyse the needs of the individual client, creating the best solution using all the most modern engineering technologies. systems and machinery, selected components and qualified personnel to ensure the highquality levels of our products. “For us, collaboration is a way of life – we have always combined technical skills with mutual trust, and listening is always the first step – both internally and with customers. Human relationships are fundamental, and this is why we offer a fast and efficient assistance service.” Salvamac Air&Painting integrally designs and builds intake plants and filtration plants for purifying and filtering oily fumes, dust and mist, and a wide range of pollutants found in the air of work environments. Its particular company organisation allows it to have every aspect of the production process under its control, guaranteeing its intake plants and air purification plants from both quality and installation viewpoints through the adoption of choice materials and the employment of qualified personnel. The experience it has gained over the years in the industrial intake sectors has led it to develop advanced products in order to become a benchmark in the sector within a short time. www.salvamac.com

BFM updates fabric event for upholstered furniture manufacturers Buyers within the international furniture community can take advantage of a fresh new format for one of the leading business-tobusiness events in the industry calendar, the BFM Fabric Show London 2022. Taking place in March, this hosted, invitationonly show offers an unrivalled exhibition experience for buying professionals to source high-quality, contemporary fabrics for upholstery, beds and soft furnishings. The British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) has moved the premium event to the ILEC Conference Centre, near to Earls Court, to offer increased capacity and space, as well as greater opportunities for more fabric suppliers to showcase their very latest products. Running across two days on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th March, the show will offer a vibrant space for more than 40 prestigious UK and international fabric suppliers to showcase their latest collections, bestsellers and exclusive options – featuring world-renowned fabric manufacturers and suppliers from Belgium, as well as Italy, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Germany and the UK. Fabrics on show will include wools, tweeds, velvets, cottons, linens, chenilles, silks, leathers, faux leathers, backing fabrics and FR treatments. The latest fabric protection and cleaning treatments will also be presented, to give industry professionals an insight into the newest innovations in this important area. Sean Holt, BFM MD, says: “The BFM Fabric Show offers an unrivalled opportunity to see high-end fabrics from some of the best mills, weavers and suppliers in Europe. “We are delighted to be attracting an international audience, and to be able to offer certainty with the date. With the industry pushing for an opportunity to network and move business forward, we took the decision to press on with plans to invigorate the event, after the challenges of the last few years due to Covid. “The BFM Fabric Show London has previously operated at capacity, so the extra space the ILEC Conference Centre offers has enabled us to include more exhibitors this year, so we can expand the scope of products on display and make the show even more compelling for buyers to visit.” To secure an invitation to the BFM Fabric Show London, register at www.bfmfabricshow.uk. At the time of publication, a few exhibitor spaces are still available – to find out more email enquiries@bfmfabricshow.uk.
