Welcome to our May edition! The team has returned from a successful and energising trip to Telford for the inaugural Furniture Components Expo. No one is ever quite sure what to expect from the first iteration of a show, especially given the current climate in which people are rightly protective of their budgets and investments. However, both the presentation of the show itself, and the quality of leads received by exhibitors were widely lauded. There was a feeling that the more specific focus of the event generated a diversified audience and alternative nature of enquiry that made it eminently worthwhile.

It’s a pleasure to see homegrown exhibitions succeed, and we look forward with great interest to watching the show grow, and hopefully prosper, into 2025 and beyond. Make sure to check back next issue for our full review.

Anticipation is growing, too, for the upcoming Materials & Finishes Show in Birmingham later this month. It will be fantastic to welcome back the furniture and joinery trade’s main UK event, complete with its fresh new team, look and concept. Find out more about what you can expect in our sizeable preview, beginning on page 20.

Elsewhere this issue, explore how Biesse’s Rover A Edge 1632 has instigated a marked improvement in efficiency and finishing quality, along with dramatic reductions in waste, for Kent-based Gopak; read about the impact Fercell’s complete turnkey installation has had upon the operations of a luxury yacht manufacturer; and explore how a HOMAG CABTEQ S-250 press has proven a worthwhile investment for specialist kitchen furniture manufacturer, Kent Home Improvements.

Our product focus this issue spans the latest developments and launches within the Sanding Technology and Abrasives, CNC Machinery & Tooling, as well as Fittings, Materials & Components sectors.

Finally, we look forward to seeing many of you at the Materials & Finishes Show in just a few weeks. We welcome you to come and find us on Stand H76 – the full team will be in attendance, and we’d love to catch up and hear your news!

Timber import volumes fall at the start of 2024, latest figures show

Timber import volumes started 2024 around 6% lower than in January 2023, down by around 45,000m3, according to the latest TDUK statistics. This reduction was made up of very different levels of performance in the first month of the year. Softwood, hardwood and plywood imports were all lower than in January 2023, but particleboard, engineered wood, OSB and MDF products all saw imports increase slightly at the start of this year. For softwoods, a 9% reduction in volumes from Sweden was the largest contributor to the 9.6% drop, with import values also 15% lower in January 2024 than they were in January 2023.

This fall was caused by the volume decline, coupled with a 5.6% fall in the average price of a basket of softwood products, down from £256m3 to £241m3

Hardwood imports experienced a 13.8% fall, largely due to tropical hardwood imports being down by around 3,000m3 In contrast, volumes of temperate hardwoods increased by 2%, with imports from the USA, Croatia and Romania accounting for most of this growth. Overall plywood imports were also down 6%, though hardwood plywood volumes rose 36%, mostly due to a near 18,000m3 increase from China.

Substantial increases in particleboard imports from Belgium, Portugal and Spain helped account for the sector’s 3.4% growth, while OSB and MDF imports were up 6% and 4.1% respectively. Finally, a 12.8% growth in engineered wood product import volumes rounds out the varied January 2024 results. www.timberdevelopment.uk

TIGHT LABOUR MARKET CONDITIONS IN POLAND

March saw Polish enterprise wages rise by 12% YoY, according to THINK. The high growth may reflect the significant minimal wage increase in 2024, and tight labour market conditions. Labour demand has gradually deteriorated, particularly in manufacturing (notably in furniture production). Companies now face decreasing margins and increasing competition from Asia, while export demand from Poland’s key trading partners is still relatively weak.

CORE PRODUCTS REACHES SETTLEMENT

On 12th January, Core Products commenced proceedings against each of FW Style, IQ GB (UK), Furnished With Style and their directors, alleging, among other things, that the defendants’ Enkel Furniture range infringed Core’s original design rights in four items of its successful Augusta product range. The proceedings were initially defended, the defendants alleging independent origination of the Enkel range, but were ultimately compromised on terms that remain confidential between the parties, save that the Enkel range of products has been withdrawn from sale, states Taylors Solicitors, which specialises in all aspects of commercial law.

BFM report highlights £1.6bn reduction in furniture trade deficit

Furniture imports dropped 13.9% in 2023, reducing the UK’s furniture trade deficit by £1.6bn compared to 2022.

British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) has released its International Trade Review 2024 – a detailed report into the balance of trade for the furniture industry.

The report examines the balance of total imports and exports, with breakdown figures for upholstery, other finished seats and chairs, kitchens, wooden bedroom furniture, wooden dining and living room furniture, as well as mattresses.

“This report delves into data exclusively commissioned for BFM and provides valuable insights into the balance

of trade for the furniture industry,” says BFM MD, Phil Spademan. “Last year, the value of imported furniture sales fell by £1.6 billion. This was driven partly by a reduction in imports of all general furniture sectors apart from mattresses.

“Overall, imports dipped by 13.9% with non-EU countries recording a fall in values of near 23% while EU imports fell by 2.8%. China dominated imports showed consistently low prices per kg for all product sectors compared to other imports.

“However, total furniture exports from the UK increased by 13.4% with a rise of 11.5% recorded for non-EU countries and a 15.2% increase in exports to the EU.”

First response support on health and safety for BFM members

A strategic new partnership will provide members of British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) with free access to a ‘first responder’ helpline offering guidance and support relating to accidents or HSE interventions.

BFM has joined forces with Didac – specialists in training, health and safety in the woodworking, furniture and warehousing sectors – to offer the ‘triage’ helpline for free, with discounted rates for members requiring other services.

The helpline will be available via BFM, and members will be able to set out their query and receive guidance and support. If additional support

is needed, the Didac team will either quote for work to be done or suggest a referral if they do not offer the service required.

“We’re delighted to welcome Didac as an Associate Member of the BFM and pleased that this new partnership will offer our members support on health and safety and training from specialists in the furniture and warehousing sectors,” says BFM MD, Phil Spademan.

“As well as providing the free helpline - which we anticipate will be a valuable resource for BFM members – Didac is also offering discounted rates on other services.”

Timber Development UK announces new conference

Timber Development UK has announced a new conference focused on a low carbon transformation of the built environment using timber. Set to take place on 26th June 2024, the UK Timber Design Conference will bring together disruptors and market leaders to discuss how we can create systemic change, usher in a net zero future, and break down the barriers to timber in construction.

IDS celebrates one year without Lost Time Accidents

Surface materials distributor, IDS, has announced a significant milestone in its Health and Safety record: a full 12 months without any Lost Time Accidents (LTAs). Lost Time Accidents are classed as any work-related injury that causes an individual to lose 24 hours of work following the day of the accident.

From the halls of Hamilton House in London, over 200 delegates from right across the timber supply chain – including leading developers, local authorities, insurers, engineers, architects, contractors and more – will be inspiring a new wave of timber design.

Supported by Swedish Wood and Built by Nature, this conference will be a must-attend event for anyone interested in designing or building with wood. www.timberdevelopment.uk

“Maintaining this safety record is no small feat in a distribution business with over 400 employees, spanning 12 regional sites, with up to 80 vehicles on the road daily, and over 12,000 product lines to stock and distribute,” comments Colin Cunningham, UK National EHS Manager at IDS. “An LTA can arise from seemingly minor incidents, so to have had zero incidents in a whole year demonstrates a tremendous effort and collaboration of everyone in ensuring the safety of all staff.” IDS takes a proactive approach to health and safety by regularly assessing workplace hazards, implementing preventive measures and providing comprehensive training to employees. Clear policies and guidelines have been established, with a strong commitment to safety evident at all levels of the organisation. www.idsurfaces.co.uk

Re-energised event with a broader exhibitor spectrum and impressive live content

Taking place from 19th-22nd May at the NEC in halls 6 and 20, the Materials & Finishes Show 2024 organiser, Montgomery Group, has been researching and developing a more engaging event with lots more to offer the visitor than was previously the case.

Visitors will notice that a few key exhibitors will not be in attendance this year, but this has been somewhat mitigated by a strong number of new exhibitors providing alternative suppliers for visitors to discover – and that’s exactly what visitors are looking for, potentially great suppliers they haven’t met yet.

The line-up may be missing a few machinery brands, but there are over 150 exhibitors – many of them new to the event – showing many hundreds of brands across machinery, equipment, tooling, materials and finishes, fitting and components. This is the biggest

gathering of suppliers for our industry, the only place where visitors can readily compare suppliers side-by-side and make better, more informed decisions about their potential supply chain partners.

Event organiser David Todd and his team have worked hard to ‘build on the legacy of the W Exhibition and develop a platform that reflects the UK woodworking industry both now and in the future.’ The first fruits of this labour are the Demo Zone – an area with live demonstrations from machinery, fittings and finishes suppliers, and a Certified CPD Learning Programme – featuring over 20 hours of CPD-certified seminars and panels.

These two introductions look to be very wise inclusions, adding substance and interest for visitors. I expect both these ideas to be well-supported and hopefully built upon for the next event in 2026.

Another important development which exhibitors and visitors will hopefully engage with is the social part of the event. Other shows I attend take this very seriously, and they reap the rewards in terms of stronger visitor numbers and better engagement.

From the exhibitor’s point of view, using social media is a complementary way to highlight your presence and connect with existing and potential visitors.

Using the Using the hashtags, #MaterialsFinishes24 and #MAFS24 now, during and after the event will amplify your message and highlight your visibility. Visitors will be made aware of, and possibly

react to this, and it also broadens the appeal of the event generally encouraging those who are still deciding whether to attend, or have never been before.

Another welcome addition to the show is the Materials & Finishes Show Bar. This is an informal setting to meet clients and colleagues. And look out for some familiar faces including Robin Clevett, Tibby Singh, Alastair Johnson and Derek Barrett – just some of the online content creators the organiser has been working with for this year’s show.

Furniture & Joinery will of course be exhibiting at the show once again with our full team in attendance: editor Gemma

Lochhead, publisher John Legg, the advertising team of Lisa Williams and Jodie Griffin, videographer Noel M Yeo and conference and marketing manager, Sophie Legg. Please make time to come and get to know us better! See you on Stand H76.

Otherwise, choose good footwear and spend a day or two identifying new options, meeting new potential suppliers, learning and cross-referencing with others, networking and generally being inspired – all of this and more under one roof at Materials & Finishes Show 2024. Extractly cuts costs for DoorCo Manufacturing

Extractly, one of the leading Dust & Fume LEV Extraction companies within the UK, will exhibit at the upcoming show on Stand K31. Below, we explore Extractly’s fundamental role in DoorCo’s latest development plans, with the supply and installation of an energysaving, Ecogate-controlled, dust extraction system at the company’s new manufacturing facility in Thorne, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

With a head office and existing manufacturing facilities in Macclesfield, Cheshire, DoorCo Ltd is already acknowledged as a leading independent manufacturer and supplier of high-quality composite doors in the UK. At Thorne, with close to 7,500m2 of space available to develop its manufacturing capacity into the future, DoorCo has made a significant

“It’s the ability to accurately monitor demand and continually vary fan speed that achieves the energy savings”

investment in state-of-the-art production machinery for its new premium door brand, which combines a machined timber core with a thermoplastic skin.

The new facility is initially opening its doors with two high-performance Biesse machining centres, but DoorCo already has plans in place to double capacity as the site develops. Extractly Ltd services and maintains the extraction systems at DoorCo’s Macclesfield facility, and last year installed a new filter unit to serve the composite door manufacturing area. With an air flow capacity of 35,000m3/hour, to remove fibreglass and PVC waste created by three CNC machines, a beam saw, and an edgebander, the extraction is controlled and optimised by an energy-saving Ecogate® system.

Following on from the successful installation at Macclesfield, Extractly’s sales director, Jake Oldfield, was invited to put forward a proposal for the provision of a new extraction system at the Thorne facility. “We were very pleased to be awarded the contract to install the system at Macclesfield, and delighted to be able to follow that up with a further installation at the new Thorne facility,”

Jake acknowledged. “DoorCo is an innovative company, with a reputation for producing the highest quality products, and we are proud to be recognised as a supplier of equipment that meets their high standards.

“Thorne was a blank canvas, but it was imperative that the system should be designed to be powerful enough, and

easily expandable, to match DoorCo’s manufacturing growth projections. The system also had to be as economical to run with just two machines in operation as it would be with four or more machines – and without any compromise on extraction power.”

Unquestionably, the key to the success of Extractly’s latest installation for DoorCo is once again the inclusion of energy-saving Ecogate® ‘on-demand’ extraction optimisation technology. With two CNC machines in continuous operation, the system needed to have an extraction capacity of around 8,000m3/ hour. However, to future-proof the system, Extractly proposed a filter unit capable of handling a minimum of 16,000m3/hour, powered by a 37kW main fan.

“Ordinarily, this would be like a ‘sledgehammer to crack a nut”, explains William Kenyon, Extractly’s technical director and specialist Ecogate® engineer. “In a traditional system, the extraction fan would operate at full power, all day, every day, and a 37kW fan would typically consume around 70,000kW of electricity per year. At DoorCo, however, the predicted electricity consumption is calculated to be substantially lower than this; even when more machines are added, and output is doubled.”

With Ecogate® technology controlling the extraction system, the fan will only operate when machining is in progress.

The Ecogate® greenBOX controller continuously monitors machine usage and adjusts fan speed accordingly, in realtime, to match every change in extraction

demand. The fan will always run at the minimum speed necessary to provide the exact extraction required to remove woodwaste from the workstations and to maintain transport velocities through the system to ensure no dust can settle in the ductwork.

“It’s the ability to accurately monitor demand and continually vary fan speed that achieves the energy savings,” explains William Kenyon, “along with some help from the laws of physics!”

Ecogate® technology takes advantage of the ‘Fan Affinity Laws’ which, when applied to an extraction system design, can substantially reduce energy consumption. Fan speed increases and decreases in proportion with the extraction volume demanded, but the

change in energy required to power the fan varies by the cube of the speed change; effectively, just a 10% reduction in fan speed will reduce electricity consumption by approximately 27%, and a reduction of 20% in fan speed can save almost 50% on the cost of electricity. On average, Ecogate® installations around the world are saving manufacturers up to 68% off their electricity bills.

Head of Operations at DoorCo, Mark Towers, concludes: “Our business has always invested in ‘the best equipment for the job’ and, at Doorco, a reliable, efficient dust extraction system is as important to us as the latest CNC machining centres we’ve installed at our Thorne factory, and I can’t fault the efficiency of the system Extractly has installed for us.”

AES Group Machinery UK Ltd to have strong presence on Stands N20 and N40

The AES Group will have a headline presence at the forthcoming Materials & Finishes Show. With one of the largest stands, the company will take the opportunity to promote its brand awareness and product range further.

Following the launch of AES Group Machinery UK Ltd and its highly successful Open House event in March 2024, AES will show its strength and presence by having a commanding stand at the exhibition. The core strength of the AES Group is not only its vast range of products but also the technical know-how and traditional heavy construction of all its machines, which are built to work even in the most demanding environments.

AES has a strong portfolio of panel processing machines and, for outright volume producers, its series of beam saws can be supplied to cut up to 6 x 18mm boards in a single operation. The machines can be supplied for front, side or rear loading depending on the customer’s factory design and workflow requirements.

The range of AES CNC nesting machines is something to behold. The range starts with the industrial AES Flexa Pro, which has been in high demand amongst the UK’s kitchen manufacturers. The most popular has been the ‘jumbo’ size machine, which is equipped with a 9Kw router head, twin 250m3 vacuum pumps and 12-position automatic tool changer with auto tool offset.

The newly launched AES Super Nova brings a new sleek look, having an enclosed gantry with LED status light panels. This machine has face drilling and is available as a competitively priced through feed line machine. For the heavier user looking to have a machine working between one and two shifts, the AES

“The core strength of the AES Group is not only its vast range of products but also the technical know-how and traditional heavy construction of all its machines”

Extreme Ultra is an excellent choice and has a further list of options, including auto labelling. The flagship of the AES nesting machine range is the heavy-duty AES Raptor Ultra, designed for continual use 24/7 and with a further list of options including three-, four- or five-axis. All nesting machines are available in various bed sizes from the 1325 (8 x 4) machines to the 2157 (2100 x 5700mm) huge capacity machine.

AES also produces a series of pod and rail style machines which are a popular choice amongst modular and office furniture manufacturers, as well as producers of fire doors. The standard industrial AES Vega Pro series offers a robust, reliable and accurate solution for small to medium-sized manufacturers. The AES Vega Ultra series is designed for heavy-duty and continual use. Both the ‘Pro’ and ‘Ultra’ series are available as three-, four- or five-axis machines and, with bed sizes up to 6m, are an ideal choice for manufacturers of staircases.

The Vega Ultra ‘Fire Door’ spec machine has been a popular choice amongst the UK’s manufacturers of fire doors and has a double-sided 5.5Kw horizontal router head for machining the locks and hinges on door blanks.

Another benefit of the AES machines is that they are ‘software neutral’, i.e. they are not dependent on manufacturers’ ’inhouse’ software. Consequently, machines can be supplied with Alphacam, NC Hops

or Pegasus as standard, or for customers already using other CAD-CAM packages such as Solidworks, they can be supplied without any software and integrated to work accordingly. For those looking for a seamless solution from design through to nesting with auto labelling, both Cabinet Vision and Microvellum offer all-encompassing ‘screen to machine’ manufacturing solutions, all of which can be easily adopted onto the AES machines. CNC drilling machines are becoming a standard piece of equipment for many cabinet makers. They can not only benefit from the fast and accurate assembly of carcass, but if the machine is equipped with a router head, can benefit from a whole range of manufacturing possibilities from engraving and pocketing to shaping. They can also use different fixings from the likes of Lamello or Intelligent Fixings. The AES Sirius and Go! 1300 machines are available as CNC drilling machines or can have the option of a router head and automatic tool changer. As standard, the machines have 10 face drills, a grooving saw and horizontal drills, allowing drilling to all four edges and the face of the panel. Whether you are looking to start manufacturing, need to improve your efficiency or looking to increase the quality and volume of your product line, AES will welcome you to stands N20 and N40 at the Materials and Finishes Show. 0800 083 8844

Is your business growing or slowing?

Is your business growing or slowing?

Even the most successful companies can face obstacles that can hinder or prevent growth but ultimately, it’s how you navigate your way through these minefields that can have the biggest impact on your business. But, when faced with an overwhelming number of routes to take, where do you start?

CAD+T has launched its own, independent consultancy brand. For over 30 years, the Austrian software developer has worked closely with furniture manufacturers to guide, support and develop new corporate practises and future-proof businesses across Europe. The introduction of its new consultancy brand takes it a step further, offering a fully comprehensive project management service that can help new and existing businesses restructure their entire production processes.

“Consultancy has always played a part in what we do,” says Martina Schwarz, CEO of CAD+T. “After all, we need to learn about a company and its practises before we are able to design the necessary software or specify the required hardware. However, we’ve never been in a position to help companies design and implement a brand new business plan or project manage an entire business strategy until now.”

The process begins with a free digital check that offers both sides a better understanding of each other and an opportunity to discuss the specialist

support needed. Martina explains, “We begin every job with a blank piece of paper and three questions: Where is the company now? Where does it want to be? And, how can we get the results it wants in the short, mid and long term?”

She continues, “It’s the team’s job to identify areas of weakness and strength, develop strategies and successfully implement new process, work flows, structures and systems. It might even involve the sourcing of new machinery, hardware and software from other providers (not just CAD+T) or recruit, train and develop new staff.”

The length of each project can vary, from a matter of weeks to years, depending on the level of investment required. “That’s

“It’s the team’s job to identify areas of weakness and strength, develop strategies and successfully implement new process, work flows, structures and systems”

why we have a long-term commitment to our clients,” says Martina. “We work closely with them to complete each stage of the plan and overcome the operational, technical and human challenges we may face along the way. We also work closely with them to secure international funding and national and regional grants wherever possible.

“During COVID, we helped a number of customers when their backs were against the wall. Now, we’re facing a new challenge. In Germany alone, 40% of manufacturing companies will be entering their next generation in the next five years. This could mean a wave of uncertainty and disruption or for those ahead of the curve and already implementing a new approach to business, it could mean a competitive edge over the competition. If you’re looking to future-proof your business and take advantage of a changing market, we’d love to hear from you.”

Asset finance – your next option for funding?

Asset finance is, for many firms, a form of funding that they might have used for many years. For others, it’s not something they know much about. In this article, Close Brothers Asset Finance takes a closer look at the different products and provides an understanding of why it could be the perfect option when considering your next purchase.

In short, asset finance is an alternative form of funding used by businesses to obtain the equipment they need to grow or access much-needed cash. Asset finance makes the otherwise unaffordable affordable because it gives businesses access to the equipment they need without incurring the cash flow disadvantage of an outright purchase.

Agreements can also be customised to the business’s needs, with flexibility on both the term and repayment schedule.

Various products come under the broad umbrella of asset finance, with one of the key ones being Refinancing or capital release, as it’s also known. This is a

proven way to make your assets work for you and release cash back into the business.

It works by the finance company purchasing the asset and financing it back to you, with repayments calculated in line with the income the asset is expected to generate. At the end of the refinance term, you own the asset.

This offers several benefits to a business that just needs a cash injection, whether it’s for investment in additional business critical assets or to use in other areas of the business, including unexpected bills and invoices, salaries, VAT payments and diversification – the uses are almost endless.

Funders can also look to take over a finance agreement with another provider and extend the term, ultimately reducing monthly payments and easing the pressure on cash flow.

Other examples of asset finance products are:

• Hire Purchase (HP) allows you to

“In this article, Close Brothers Asset Finance takes a closer look at the different products and provides an understanding of why asset finance could be the perfect option when considering your next purchase”

buy the equipment on credit. The finance company purchases the asset on your behalf and owns the asset until the final instalment is paid, at which point you are given the option to buy it.

• Finance lease: The full value of the equipment is repaid to the finance company, plus interest, over the lease period. At the end of the term, you can choose to: continue to use the asset by entering a secondary rental period; sell the asset and keep a portion of the income from the sale, or return it.

• Operating lease: Similar to a Finance Lease, an Operating Lease allows you to rent the asset from the asset funder while you need it. The key difference between the two is that an Operating Lease is only for part of the asset’s useful life. This means you pay a reduced rental because the cost is based on the difference between the asset’s original purchase price and its residual value at the end of the agreement.

Explore Ostermann’s expansive edging range

Ostermann is eagerly anticipating the upcoming Materials & Finishes Show, where it will present the company’s service, diversity and speed on its large stand – C20, in Hall 6. Due to the new exhibition concept, Ostermann has decided on a much larger stand than in previous years. It’s a good thing too, as Ostermann is looking forward to presenting as many new products and services as possible to trade fair visitors, in addition to giving them plentiful ideas for future projects.

“The diversity in the Ostermann range offers a solution for almost every application in private and commercial furniture construction”

A new assortment of fittings has expanded the Ostermann range. In order to maintain an overview despite the diversity, the Ostermann experts have come up with a special concept – a tour

through different living spaces, past many pieces of furniture that each reveal individual solutions. A new, large edging wall with the latest innovations is also waiting for its grand appearance.

Workshop 4.0: The innovative ConnectControl technology from MARTIN

ConnectControl is the umbrella term for the cloud-based, patented control concept that characterises the latest generation of sliding table saws and spindle moulders from MARTIN. This award-winning MARTIN invention provides users with a uniquely designed, highly powerful control concept that not only opens completely new horizons for machine operation, but also unlocks the entire world of modern data exchange.

New horizons for your workshop

The state-of-the-art technology to operate classic woodworking machines is dominated by electronic controls that are permanently connected to the machine. There is no possibility for multifunctional use of the existing control electronics. These controls are only connected to the Internet in special cases, mainly for maintenance purposes.

With the ConnectControl control concept, MARTIN considers the increasing digitalisation of the work environment, which has also found its way into classic woodworking shops. A central cornerstone here is communication.

Modern companies and their employees increasingly work with electronic work documents, i.e. tablets, both because the tablet carries all relevant work documents, and because it is a central tool of modern communication.

“This award-winning MARTIN invention provides users with a uniquely designed, highly powerful control concept that not only opens completely new horizons for machine operation, but also unlocks the entire world of modern data exchange”

Smart operation

It made sense to take this development further and use the tablet as an extended machine control system. With the tablet or the corresponding app, users have access to extensive extensions of the essential machine operation, which run on the 7” screen that is permanently installed on the machine. In addition, access to centrally managed data in the company, such as order data or tool information, is ensured via the tablet or the associated cloud application.

Of course, every machine equipped with ConnectControl can be operated without a docked tablet and an online connection, but then communication to the “outside” is not possible.

Mobile extension

The intelligent combination of a mobile tablet and a 7” touch screen permanently installed on the machine enables the multi-level operating concept to provide efficient electronic support for the operator directly at the machine.

The tablet also ensures communication between machine and work preparation,

as well as between machine and construction site. The tablet as the employee’s central work device guarantees that work processes are perfectly organised, even if changes occur that come into the company from outside. An example of this is a change of plan at short notice by a client, which flows seamlessly to the machine by using modern communication technology. Neither outdated work instructions nor outdated drawings need to be exchanged; everyone has the latest status directly at hand at all times.

Award-winning technology of tomorrow already exists today at MARTIN

The ConnectControl control concept has already won two awards. Firstly, the innovative design of the control structure was honoured with the German Design Award 2022. Secondly, the innovations realised in this concept have also been honoured with the German Innovation Award 2022. sales@martin.info www.martin.info

More power from Mirka as it debuts new tools

The Materials and Finishes show will mark the UK show debut of the new Mirka® DEROS II and Mirka® DEOS II, with live demonstrations on stand F58. Providing the user with up to 20 per cent more power to handle the demands of a multitude of applications, these products ensure the consistent high-quality finish that has become a hallmark of the Mirka® DEROS and DEOS tool lines.

The Mirka® DEROS II and Mirka® DEOS II are powered by an upgraded electric motor that delivers more sanding power to make light work of demanding jobs and heavy applications. They also feature a new visible LED speed indicator that makes it even easier for the operator to adjust the sanding speed.

The new tools will be supported by Mirka’s robotic sanding heads, which the Mirka® AIOS 353CV will spearhead. This sanding head has been engineered for robotic applications to ensure consistent quality. Its rectangular design makes it suitable for industrial processes such as shaker door manufacturing, where a rectangular sanding solution is required

“The Mirka® DEROS II and Mirka® DEOS II are powered by an upgraded electric motor that delivers more sanding power to make light work of demanding jobs and heavy applications”

to reach the edges of the door and a highquality finish is required.

The precision of the tool helps drive up productivity as well as the quality of the finish, while the compact design makes the heads ideal for confined spaces and detail work. In addition, the tools can be fitted to low-payload robot arms and come with a standardised ISO 9409-1-806-M8 flange that can also be customised with an adapter. The robotic sanding heads can also be adapted to work with Universal Robots collaborative solutions using a special UR installation kit that includes the Mirka tool, the motor drive cabinet, cabling and the required UR adaptor flange.

Alongside the tools, the abrasives will be led by Ultimax® Ligno, the new abrasive designed specifically for wood sanding applications. It combines innovation with robust consideration for the environment. The production method reduces energy consumption as the process for curing the glue is more efficient. It also has superior adhesion with VOC-free resin, ensuring a safer and healthier choice for users and the environment.

With its ceramic mixed with Blue Fired Alox grains, the abrasive’s surface channels serve as pathways to direct the smooth movement of wood fibres to extraction holes, preventing clogging and enhancing sanding quality. It accelerates sanding operations by maintaining the cleanliness of abrasive grains for uninterrupted cutting and prevents the

formation of a ‘blanket’ of dust between the grains and the sanded surface. The abrasive also uses a specially developed latex-impregnated paper to improve flexibility and adhesion and to control edgewear, extending its lifespan. The abrasive features a Multifit™ hole pattern which eliminates the requirement for precise alignment, as it is always correctly fitted to match the dust extraction holes.

Mirka’s wide belt experts will also be on hand to discuss the breadth of the wide belt product portfolio, which will be spearheaded by the innovative Ultimax® range. Ultimax® has been designed for sanding and finishing veneers and hardwood surfaces such as oak and beech and its Selective Coating™ Technology creates a higher specific sanding pressure for faster stock removal, better performance and with no deterioration in finish. The combination of this innovative technology and the special abrasive grains increases the product’s life span and reduces materials per job. www.mirka.com

The Sames Cyclomix® Evo for precision and paint savings

Sames has replaced its range of dosing/ mixing machines with a unique reference – the Cyclomix® Evo. Protected by two patents, it is distinguished by its precision and productivity. Beta tests have also shown up to 10% paint savings.

Sames previously had three 2K and 3K dosing/mixing references – the Cyclomix® Micro, Multi and Expert. These have been replaced by a single machine – the Cyclomix® Evo. The user specifies the basic module: number of paint circuits, colour changer blocks, flow meters, regulators, etc. Simply add modules to increase capacity.

Perfect dosing and mixing, no untimely stops

The range has been simplified but optimised, and Sames has taken particular care with its basic functions. The dosing is perfect whatever the flow rate thanks to a new patented injection system. The mixing is done with vortex technology, which ensures a homogeneous distribution of the catalyst. The user can work without being interrupted by alarms due to incorrect dosing and does not have to rework parts that would present an aspect defect. This guarantees high productivity, especially since the control interface is simple: it only takes two minutes to learn how to use it.

Fewer lost volumes during colour changes

Another advantage, confirmed by some 20 beta tests, is that paint savings are on

target, reaching up to 10% for frequent colour changes.

These savings result from the reduction of interior volumes and the elimination of retention zones, but also from the addition of a “paint optimisation” function that reduces the volumes lost during colour changes. Finally, for 3K paints, a patented

“The dosing is perfect whatever the flow rate thanks to a new patented injection system”

potlife management system divides by five the volume lost in case of production stoppage.

Automated

management of production waste

For waste management, an additional module automatically collects and separates paint mixtures, reusable solvents, and soiled solvents. The associated taxes and reprocessing costs are reduced accordingly.

From May 19th-22nd, visitors at Sames’ booth at the Materials & Finishes Show in Birmingham (Hall 20, Stand H51) can see the Cyclomix® Evo and learn more about this innovation.

Cyclomix® Evo is now available, at a price close to that of the previous range. Compatible with the paint lines of competing brands, it will be enriched next year with other high value-added functions.

Leading Vertongen machines

MWM is set to showcase a selection of machinery from Vertongen at the show, for whom MWM has just been named UK sole agency.

MWM’s managing director, Gavin Cooper, is delighted that his company has been awarded the principal agency for the Belgian brand’s expansive range in the UK, and looks forward to taking the opportunity to showcase some of the machines at the exhibition.

Vertongen is widely known as a leading manufacturer of CNC machinery designed for the production of kitchen cabinetry, in addition to door and window production. The woodworking machinery specialist has a very impressive heritage, and will next year celebrate 125 years in the business.

Today, Vertongen specialises in CNC automated woodworking machinery, with considerable experience in the manufacture of single-end tenoners and profiles moulders designed for the production of wooden windows and doors.

The business also has expert knowledge in the production of five-piece kitchen door machinery. Amongst the current

“The woodworking machinery specialist has a very impressive heritage, and will next year celebrate 125 years in the business”

collection of machines available from Vertongen is the Pentho Compact 3 universal tenoner. This features a noisereducing cut-off saw, two tenon heads and a vertical Prolock spindle adjusted to an accuracy of 0.1mm.

All movements on the machine are manual adjustable, with a 7in touch panel for starting motors in your own language. Total table swivelling is +60 deg/ - 60deg, while the digital length fence is 2.4m with a single swivelling backstop.

Vertongen’s profile machines, meanwhile, are specially designed for throughfeed profiling components. The profiling of different parts is facilitated without the need for tool changing.

The technologically advanced Profil Compact 2 moulder, for example, is produced with two spindles without top bearing. The first spindle can be made to

jump in and out to avoid breakout during storm profiling. Both spindles can turn to the left or right.

Other key features include automatic storm-proof cycles and the ability to install all tools for a single product type. There is an easy tool changeover device for different products.

Vertongen offers a complete solution for the production of complete windows and doors, which can be manufactured on an industrial scale with the utmost precision and efficiency.

The PenPro Control is a fully CNCcontrolled combination of the Pentro Control and the Profit Control. It only requires a single operator and has a production capacity of over 400 parts/ shift.

When it comes to kitchen cabinet door production, Vertongen’s machines save on both space on the factory floor and time. Each individual machine covers a different step of the production process, and each is operated by a different person. Both the PenPro Compact kitchen machine and the accompanying Shaper Sizer only require a single operator.

Now, each of these high-performance Belgian-manufactured machines can be purchased through Leicester-based MWM. Gavin Cooper and his team will be on hand to demonstrate them either at the company’s extensive showroom facility, or at the upcoming Materials & Finishes Show where Vertongen will exhibit on stand K52, OAV will exhibit on stand K40 and Martin will exhibit on stand M33. 0116 289 3469

Nordfab to highlight importance of dust extraction systems on Stand L78

In order to safeguard the well-being of craftsmen and maintain a clean and efficient workspace, it’s crucial to invest in a dust extraction system. Nordfab will exhibit at the Materials & Finishes Show on Stand L78, demonstrating the manifold benefits of its innovative ducting components.

Understanding the risks

While it may appear harmless, wood dust can lead to a host of health problems when inhaled regularly. Respiratory issues, including coughing wheezing, and shortness of breath, are common among those exposed to high levels of wood dust. Moreover, prolonged exposure can worsen existing respiratory conditions, leading to chronic health complications.

Protecting worker health

Installing a dust extraction system is not merely a matter of regulatory compliance; it’s a proactive step towards protecting the health and well-being of craftsmen. By capturing wood dust at its source, these systems minimise airborne particles.

Promoting workplace safety

Accumulated dust can obscure visibility, increasing the likelihood of accidents and injuries. Moreover, fine dust particles are combustible, presenting a fire hazard in environments with inadequate dust control measures. By implementing a dust extraction system, joineries mitigate these risks, fostering a safer work environment for all.

Enhancing productivity and efficiency

A clean workspace is essential for optimal productivity

and efficiency in furniture joineries. Dust accumulation not only impedes visibility but also hampers machinery performance and maintenance. Over time, it can lead to equipment breakdowns and costly repairs. By investing in a dust extraction system, joinery owners ensure uninterrupted workflow, prolong machinery lifespan, and minimise downtime to enhance productivity.

Choosing the right system

When selecting a dust extraction system for a furniture joinery, the system should be tailored to the specific processes and machinery used within the workshop, ensuring efficient dust capture and extraction.

Nordfab, a leading manufacturer of ducting components for dust extraction systems, offers a range of innovative solutions designed to capture and remove dust particles from the air.

Nordfab’s Quick-Fit ducting system features modular components that are easy to install and reconfigure when new machineries have to be added to the floorplan. Nordfab offers specialised products for wood applications, such as manifolds to connect to many of the major woodworking machine models, and a dropout box to stop large woodchips in the airstream.

Cutting optimisation systems have been integral in such production planning for many years; replacing the timeconsuming and often inaccurate manual calculation of cutting plans.

Whilst all optimisers available on the market are proud of their maximum yield/ minimum wastage solutions, including SECANT – should this really be all that is

of concern when optimising production?

Financial gains through savings in material can be rapidly lost through additional processing time at the saw. This could be due to inefficient use of the full cutting capacity of the saw, or through overly complicated patterns containing multiple turns and recuts.

With a sleek new design and userfriendly interface, SECANT version 8 is designed to help you reduce waste and improve efficiency. With its state-of-theart cutting optimiser, you can generate

solutions tailored to balance material yield against production time – a balance which may vary depending on the cost of material being cut, the lead time for the product, or the capacity of the factory at any time. With SECANT you can rest assured that you’ll be working at maximum capacity, saving both time and money.

AES UK enjoys fruitful first foray

Successful first open house demonstrates professional commitment and provides an optimal platform for improved customer interaction.

Last autumn, AES Group Machinery UK Ltd was set up as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the fast-growing AES Group to further increase the company’s brand awareness and to emphasise the ongoing commitment to its UK customers. Six months on and AES Group Machinery UK’s superb new showroom facility was the setting for its inaugural in-house event.

The brand new showroom offers an extensive range of AES Group products in a highly professional and modern, yet relaxed environment and gives informed and proven advice to customers looking to improve their methods of manufacturing. At the company’s first open-house event the set-up was very impressive. A ‘mini-exhibition’ with a confident collection of AES machines was augmented by

a number of invited industry suppliers which, combined, provided considerable insight for visitors over the four days, with customers coming from the local area and across the UK.

AES has developed its UK customers at a consistent rate over the last few years and during the opening of their official UK subsidiary, the key figures from the AES Group were present including Group chairman, Mr Ismet Toktas, along with the Export and European sales executives, service managers and engineers who were present to demonstrate the machines working.

Following the company’s first open house event, Carl O’Meara, AES UK’s managing director, reports that the customer feedback has been very positive: “We were somewhat surprised by both the level of interest and encouraging comments received for the duration of the show. I guess that despite AES being a global manufacturer, and having a presence in the UK since 2017, visitors were surprised by the diversity of products, build quality and how they were presented.”

AES UK’s national sales manager, Jeff Green, was also pleased with how the event went. “Our first open house was a great success, allowing customers to see what our AES Group organisation can offer within the UK market. We are now

in a position where the UK market can be sure that all aspects of their investment in machinery and people will be advised, trained and supported throughout their journey of success by AES UK.

“In my 40 years spent as a manufacturer, I have experienced all kinds of machinery manufacturers and their supporting engineers, and I can say that AES Group UK is by far the most supportive – the customers cannot and should not be just a number in a corporate database.”

AES’ open house event presented a great place to discuss customers’ needs when it comes to purchasing a CNC machine. According to Jeff, among the topics visitors enquired about was the people behind the product. “Here at AES UK, we have a wealth of experience. Our sales staff are from a production background and are therefore fully versed in all aspects of manufacturing and workflow management. Any proposals are always made to at least meet, or more often than not, exceed customer expectations.”

Questions of service were also raised by some: “All new AES machines are complimented with a ‘free-for-life’ remote technical support where the AES technical centre can connect to a machine and offer diagnostics and updates as and when required. We also have employed, UKbased, AES-trained technicians available to carry out all installation, maintenance, service, CAD-CAM programming, training and software development – and we can of course also offer extended warranties,” explained Jeff.

He also answered a point raised by some concerning the availability of AES products: “Due to increased global

demand for our products, in the last two years the AES Group have heavily invested by opening three more manufacturing facilities which will allow them to almost double their production capacity. This will result in shorter delivery times across the range. There will also, of course, be machines held in stock here in the UK ready for immediate delivery.”

Asked what made the AES Group stand out, Jeff was clear: “Firstly, AES are open and honest about where their machines are built and that it does not outsource manufacturing to any other country. In fact, they do quite the opposite and manufacture machines for other companies! AES also still manufactures

its machines to traditional, rugged engineering standards and puts metal into its products to ensure stability and long-term accuracy whilst working at high speeds for optimised production cycles.”

Another example of AES’ integrity is its strong approach to training, a key issue for many. Jeff explained: “Several

customers who visited us pointed out how they had purchased CNC machines from other sources, but hadn’t been trained how to use them, or even given advice on how to ‘drive’ them – I find that quite incredible! Software is a major consideration when it comes to CNC – this is another advantage of the AES machines as they are software-

neutral and can run on pretty much any chosen program.”

And what about the partners who also took part at the open house – what did they feel about the event? “The general feedback was very positive,” said Carl, “with all supporting companies expressing their thanks for being part of the event along with their desire to support us for future events.”

Lauren Barker from respected panel products supplier, Lawcris, said: “We found the exhibition to be a fantastic opportunity to unite forward-thinking companies, creating a hub for like-minded innovators to mingle, exchange ideas, and collaborate in an impressive atmosphere.”

Dominik Whitaker from Intelligent Fixings said: “It was a pleasure to join the AES Group’s launch event in the UK, allowing us to provide visitors with insightful knowledge about the Peanut® and how our furniture connecting technology can be combined with the exciting range of AES Group wood processing machines.”

Shaye Chatfield, Lamello Area Sales manager – International, UK and Ireland said: “Lamello has been working closely with AES in Europe since 2023 so when we were invited to partner with AES UK for

The AES Extreme Ultra is a heavy duty, high speed machine favailable as either a stand-alone machine or as a fully-automatic nesting line machine with auto loading and offloading

its official launch last month, it seemed like a great opportunity to present the recent collaboration to the UK market.

“Lamello prides itself on working closely with high quality CNC manufacturers and, with new state-of-the-art facilities and a wide range of CNC routers available at different price brackets, the AES range offers us a great platform to showcase our P-System and Cabineo CNC connectors to a new audience. Going forward, Lamello connectors can be demonstrated at AES UK on demand –highlighting the compatibility between the two brands – and will be shown on AES UK’s Material & Finishes Show stand at the NEC this month.

“It just remains to be said that the hard work certainly paid off for Carl and the team and we look forward to working closely with AES as the brand continues to grow.”

Jason Southam, Hranipex’s Technical Product Manager - UK & ROI, said: “I was thoroughly impressed by the innovation and efficiency showcased at the AES UK in-house show at the end of March. It was evident that AES has a full range of top-notch solutions for any kind of panel processing.”

Carl summarised the success of the event and added news of a September date. “As the official launch of the AES Group Machinery Ltd showroom, we really couldn’t have asked for it to be any better. We had both existing and potential new customers visit and the supporting companies were fantastic to work with. From the software to fixtures

and fittings, there was truly something for everyone.

“We are now planning for our stand at the Material & Finishes Show in May at the NEC in Birmingham, as well as our next open house event which will be held on 26-29th September 2024.”

Kundig’s first-ever UK open house event

In March 2024, Kundig held its first-ever UK open house event and the big question is, was it worth it? The answer is, definitely!

Long-established wide belt and edge sanding machinery manufacturer, Kundig of Switzerland has been supplying its machinery to the UK market since 1996 and over the years has been a regular participant in the UK’s woodworking machinery exhibitions.

Having now moved into more modern and spacious premises, Kundig Ltd decided the time was right to invest in its own open house event, where customers old and new could visit and see the latest developments in wide belt and edge sanding machinery. The open house also allowed customers to have a more in-depth look at the technology behind the machine and for Kundig to present a more personal and dedicated presentation of its machines without the usual hustle and bustle and

distractions of the larger venues.

Customers were invited to either bring or send samples of their products which could be sanded on the day and both Gerald Krebs, Kundig AG’s senior applications engineer and UK’s installation and technical adviser, Matthew Staley, were present to demonstrate and offer guidance on how to achieve the best surface finish.

Kundig has become one of the very few go-to companies when high-end furniture manufacturers want to create exquisite works of art for the more discerning customer. The surface finish is the first impression a potential purchaser of fine furniture will see and if it has a high gloss finish, the surface needs to be perfectly flat, free from distortion and free from

“The surface finish is the first impression a potential purchaser of fine furniture will see and if it has a high gloss finish, the surface needs to be perfectly flat, free from distortion and free from scratch marks”

scratch marks. The Kundig Perfect-2 1350 REd-L was one of the machines on display and demonstrated how easy and accurate it was to generate a high-quality surface even when moving from sanding solid wood, to veneered panels to de-nibbing sprayed boards.

78 EVENTS KUNDIG OPEN HOUSE REVIEW

The Kundig Perfect demonstrated was equipped with a calibration roller, followed by a segmented sanding pad with 22mm segments giving a high level of sensitivity, especially required when sanding a sprayed surface. The dedicated sanding pad was also set in the oblique position so there is no need to have an inner belt as the sanding properties totally change by having this shear cutting action.

The big advantage of the Oblique sanding head is that it eliminates the snake-like oscillation marks usually caused by traditional-style straight-line sanding machines. The shear-cutting action also gives a less fibrous surface, whilst also extending the life of the abrasive. The high-specification Kundig Perfect also has a vacuum bed, variable speed to the abrasive, high pressure cleaner to the second belt, LED light pack showing the operator the status of the abrasive and automatic grit setting when changing the abrasive on the calibration roller.

Kundig also took the opportunity to give a special preview of the all-new Kundig Master during this open house event. The new model is based on its highly successful predecessor and, of course, continues with Kundig’s fixed bed design, but now has a 200mm working height as standard. This new model has a standard working width of 1350mm and is available as either a two-belt (Roller and Pad) or a three-belt machine (Roller, Roller and Pad). The pad is available as a standard inflation pad for joinery or as an electronic pad for sanding veneered boards.

The preview machine also showed off the new touch screen control, giving a whole host of new features. The new Master also now comes complete with Kundig’s renowned Enormatic automatic setting function. Not only does the Enormatic allow the automatic setting of the machine, but it also has an auto start function, so for example if sanding doors or large panels, the operator does not

need to return or try and stretch over to the control panel.

Lastly, and by no means least, was the display of the Kundig range of edge sanding machines. The Kundig Uniq is the stand-alone model, but is still generously equipped with features including motorised tilt of the abrasive, motorised raise and lower of the abrasive and programmable oscillation to maximise the use of the 200mm wide sanding belt.

The Kundig Uniq-S has the same features as the Uniq but has an integrated feed system included. The feed has inverter-controlled variable speed and is available with either a single drive belt or two parallel drive belts. The flagship of edge sanding machines was also shown, which is known as the Kundig Flash.

This machine was developed to edge sand sealed or lacquered panels and has an action-controlled sanding pad, cleaner to the abrasive and variable speed control to both the feed and the sanding belt.

“We were surprised at the level of interest and the feedback from companies expressing interest in the Kundig products and we took several orders during the event,” said Kundig. “This open house event allowed us to show more of the Kundig products and that a sander is simply not just a sander.

“Due to the success of this event, Kundig will be hosting another open house event from the 26-29th September 2024.”

Blum wows visitors at kbb 2024 with innovative solutions for flexible and compact spaces

Leading components and fittings manufacturer, Blum, made a huge impact at this year’s kbb show with its three adjacent stands. Demonstrating why being a Blum partner opens up more opportunities for a business than simply buying a hinge or drawer runner, the company highlighted how customers can be inspired with innovative storage solutions for flexible and responsive living spaces.

Embracing the trend for urban living, where compact houses and apartments in cities and built-up areas need intelligent and innovative solutions for onespace living, kitchen and dining, Blum showcased its impressive 22 square metre concept home.

In such a small space, every millimetre matters and visitors were able to see how Blum’s storage solutions make life easier and more ergonomic at the same time. It showed how Blum fittings can be used not only in the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom but also in the hallway, home office and utility room, too.

“The Blum stand also made headlines with its new REVEGO pocket system, a highly innovative solution that opens endless design possibilities”

With a hidden door to the bathroom, Blum’s 22 square metre home showed how space can be fully optimised at every level, with the new SPACE STEP providing access to top cupboards, while also containing storage within.

The Blum stand also made headlines with its new REVEGO pocket system, a highly innovative solution that opens endless design possibilities, as demonstrated on the stand with a practical and stylish hidden kitchen and home office, both concealed behind REVEGO pocket doors. Perfect for studio apartments and city living, the kitchen can be completely hidden from view after cooking while home workers can close the door after their working day.

REVEGO from Blum is a smart cabinet solution with fixed pocket widths that can be easily incorporated into plans featuring standard cabinets, making light work of assembly. Available as a single or double door application, it comes with a choice of plinth options and can be produced and pre-assembled by the manufacturer for delivery to the place of installation.

REVEGO uses Blum’s TIP-ON motion technology, so users can open doors with a single touch, then slide them away into the pocket so they disappear from view, while saving space at the same time.

To conceal the kitchen, home office or

laundry room once again, users press the door to release it from the pocket then press again to conceal the area elegantly. This year, kbb also saw Blum showcasing its AMPEROS concept, a safe and systematic solution that enables the easy electrification of furniture. Users can power or charge their devices directly in their Blum drawers, create ambience with atmospheric lighting or have easy access to kitchen appliances with AMPEROS, which is easy to retrofit with no electrical skills required.

Whether used to charge or power mobiles and tablets, hair dryers or hair straighteners, AMPEROS allows for the safe supply of power to Blum drawers or pull-out shelves without any free-hanging or visible cables and, as AMPEROS doesn’t require a drawer back, it’s perfect for coffee machines, food processors, or other small appliances that can be placed on Blum’s pull-out shelf. This locks into place and can hold 40-70kg of weight depending on the runner selected. Blum also presented its services and support, highlighting its technical services, demonstrating a Fitters box for installers and specialist machinery for manufacturers.

Gopak throws some shapes on the factory floor with Biesse Rover A Edge

The installation of a new Rover A Edge 1632 at Gopak is proving that Biesse really does have the edge when it comes to the machining and edgebanding of intricate shapes. Since the new routing and edgebanding machine arrived at Gopak’s facility in May, the company has experienced a marked improvement in efficiency and finishing quality, along with dramatic reductions in waste for its Enviro range of tables and benches.

For decades, Gopak has been furnishing business premises, classrooms, canteens, libraries, community centres and other spaces with tables, benches and chairs, made by the skilled manufacturing team at its Kent facility. The firm also makes Enviro tables and benches under licence and in recent years, this range has become increasingly popular with early learning establishments and primary schools. The appeal of this furniture, which comprises an unwelded aluminium frame and a corrugated core board with a laminated surface, lies in its high loadbearing capacity and intricate shape options – daisies, keyholes, triangles and kidney shapes are all possible.

“In younger years education there is increasing emphasis on enhancing the learning experience through the environment,” explains Gopak’s operations director, Damien Hickie.

“The Enviro range is ideal for this, as it offers scope for creating fun, appealing schemes with different themes, shapes and colours. In this context, the Enviro range is contributing an ever-increasing percentage of Gopak’s overall sales, so it was essential that we invested in this area to future-proof growth.”

“We were blown away by what we saw. A Biesse representative explained the Ray Force system and we could see that this was a company at the forefront of machining technology.

That got us thinking”

Edgebanding is the most challenging aspect of manufacturing this type of furniture; a straight line edgebander cannot follow the contours, therefore a shaped edgebander is required. Up until that point, Gopak was relying on a 12-year-old machine, but rework had reached an unacceptably high level.

“The quality of the joins was letting us down. We were having to remove and reapply one in every 20 edgebands because the closure wasn’t correct, which was costing us time and money,” explains Damien.

“Blown away” by Biesse

Gopak visited the W Show at the NEC and admits to being “blown away” by the Rover A Edge on Biesse’s booth. The machine was equipped with Ray Force technology – a cutting-edge solution that uses infrared technology to apply shaped edges on panels without glue.

“We were blown away by what we saw. A Biesse representative explained the Ray Force system and we could see that this was a company at the forefront of machining technology. That got us thinking,” recalls Damien.

Gopak obtained two quotes for comparison and asked both companies to provide samples.

“On some tables, we apply a 32mm edgeband on a 90-degree corner. The

other company struggled to get a good finish on this – the samples they provided weren’t really acceptable, whereas the boards we sent to Biesse came back perfect,” says Damien.

Gopak was also impressed with how the Biesse sales team handled the quotation.

“Usually, machine suppliers give you a price for everything you need plus everything you don’t, and you have to wait ages for the actual quotation. Biesse’s sales team came to our site and we discussed what was required and which options were valuable. They didn’t try and oversell or ‘over-spec’; they recommended a three-axis rather than a five-axis spindle, for example. They ‘built’ the machine specification during the meeting and supplied a quote there and then. That was an important selling point,” says Damien.

This discussion steered Gopak towards a Rover A Edge 1632 edgebanding CNC centre, which is capable of producing shaped, edgebanded panels on a single machine.

Ray Force was pre-enabled on the machine so that Gopak has the option of adding this system at a later date. Gopak also opted for Biesse’s EPS (Electronic Positioning System) on the pod & rail machine, which provided a significant step up in efficiency versus the manual pod placement that was necessary with its incumbent CNC.

88 INSTALLATIONS

Automatic pod placement

The EPS system is regarded as “the market-leading technology for automated table set-up”.

EPS configures the whole working area in as little as 20 seconds, with the positioning of each pod and rail performed automatically by independent servo motors. This allows fast and accurate setup and changeovers that help to improve productivity and reduce operator errors.

“On our other CNC, every time we want to process a different-sized board, the operator has to move the pods manually, which is time-consuming and introduces the risk of human error. With the EPS system, by the time the operator has fetched the next board, the pods have moved into the right position. This massively increases efficiency,” says Damien.

Gopak has also realised efficiency gains through the aggregate head for trimming and scraping, which delivers an immaculate finish so there is no need for secondary hand finishing.

“We were having to hand finish because the trimmer and scraper couldn’t achieve the final finish. This wasn’t ideal from an efficiency or a health & safety perspective. With the Biesse machine, there is no handfinishing requirement and we are getting an improved finish,” says Damien.

In addition, the use of a rounding cutter to remove the excess material on 90-degree corners decreases cycle time.

IoT platform supports reliability

With service support a key priority for Gopak, the preventative maintenance

capabilities and dynamic part ordering system available through Biesse’s SOPHIA IoT platform were a major selling point.

“As we make to order, it is really important that we do not let customers down. With previous machines, we have had breakdowns and had to wait four days for a response. SOPHIA proactively identifies any potential issues rather than waiting until something fails, giving us confidence that the machine is being monitored,” says Damien.

“SOPHIA also incorporates a part ordering system that is directly related to the machine’s serial number, so our maintenance manager can go into the parts system and instantly cost and order any part applicable to our machine model. This makes spare parts ordering so much more streamlined.”

A visit to Biesse’s factory in Pesaro, Italy, for final acceptance tests, reassured Gopak that the decision to invest in the Rover A Edge was the right one.

“The factory ran like clockwork and everyone who worked there just oozed passion,” enthuses Damien.

A top job

A week later, the machine was delivered to Gopak’s premises in Hythe, Kent, and is now up and running, producing tops. As part of the installation, Biesse provided three expert engineers to commission the machine and deliver training.

“This ensured that the router was set up to our exact specification, and that our Enviro team are empowered with an in-depth understanding of how to programme the machine,” says Damien.

The new machine is running alongside Gopak’s existing CNC-edgebander and is already boosting output and reducing waste.

“Producing table and bench tops of perfect quality and finish every time has led to a significant reduction in the number of tops being rejected in the manufacturing process. Previously we were having to rework one in 20. Since installing the Rover A Edge, our scrap analysis has shown the machine has produced no waste whatsoever. We are made up with the quality of the joins.

Having used an alternative edge banding machine for over ten years it is clear that the Biesse Rover A really does have the edge,” concludes Damien. 01327 300366

Kent Home Improvements squares up with HOMAG CABTEQ S-250

Specialist kitchen furniture manufacturer, Kent Home Improvements, was set up in the 1970s. With a turnover of around £2½ million, the company has built a reputation for designing and producing high-quality furniture components for the independent kitchen trade.

“Although the company is over 50 years old, it is only in the last six years that the business has grown exponentially,” enthuses Dan Endicott, general manager at Kent Home Improvements. He continues, “The expansion is down to the investment the new owners (who bought the business in 2017) have made in machinery and staff.

“The latest investment was for a HOMAG CABTEQ S-250 press. The company has been buying HOMAG machinery for over 40 years and has always found its equipment and software to be superb. We believe it is the best in the market and offers outstanding value for money.

“Our old carcass press was dying and we no longer needed such a big press. We wanted a robust, efficient and simple-tooperate carcass press to replace it and so we turned to HOMAG.”

A visit to the HOMAG showroom

“To ensure we invested in the right model, we attended one of HOMAG’s Open House

“The HOMAG CABTEQ S-250 delivers on every front. It’s a reliable, high-performance press that ensures all our cabinets are accurately and squarely aligned”

days at its Castle Donington showroom,” says Dan. “Seeing how easy to operate the CABTEQ presses are, and the perfectly square units they produce, gave us the confidence to place an order for the CABTEQ S-250 model.

“As the last step in production before packaging and delivery, the assembly quality has a significant impact on the end customer’s satisfaction with the product. So, for us, when it comes to building kitchens, cleanly pressed cabinets are a key sign of quality in pre-assembled furniture.

“The HOMAG CABTEQ S-250 delivers on every front. It’s a reliable, highperformance press that ensures all our cabinets are accurately and squarely aligned. Another bonus is you need no prior knowledge to operate the press; it’s simply a question of placing the cabinet in the press and pushing the start button.

90 INSTALLATIONS
HOMAG CABTEQ S-250

“The plates move from their starting position to the pressing position at rapid speed. Then, just prior to connecting with the cabinet, the speed switches automatically to the slower pressing speed. This system minimises the time needed for the pressing process.”

Versatile, powerful and reliable

The CABTEQ S-250 model can handle a diverse range of product sizes – from cabinets (l) 150 x (w) 250 x (h) 150 mm up to (l) 3000 x (w) 900 x (h)1400 mm. With a pressing pressure range from 12-18 kN in both vertical and horizontal planes, the pressing force can be adjusted as required. This is simple to do on the control panel and ensures the pressure is distributed completely evenly on all sides of the cabinet.

Dan Endicott again, “Our new press from HOMAG has speeded up our production process as we no longer have to do any manual clamping. More importantly, perhaps, it has improved the quality of every finished product we manufacture –we can now be certain each cabinet will be

perfectly square.

“Our long-standing relationship with HOMAG is based on trust and service. All the HOMAG people are friendly, professional and extremely knowledgeable; they are always there on the end of a phone if we need anything,

and its machinery is reliable and delivers lifetime value for money,” concludes Dan.

From production waste to biomass fuel

With plans to implement a waste handling facility, a luxury yacht manufacturer installed a biomass system to generate energy from their production waste. Consisting of mixed wood-based materials, including large sheets of skeletal waste from various CNC machining centres, they were looking to easily and effectively convert their waste into a uniform product, which could be easily transported and used within their biomass system.

Fercell was consulted on the specification of a plant design best suited for their application, which ultimately resulted in Fercell being awarded the contract for a complete turnkey installation.

The system, consisting of a 2-metrewide shredder, outfeed conveyor, a series of loading conveyors and an air-handling system was designed to fit within a plant room and operate between the plant room and an externally sited biomass boiler (with storage silo) and an adjacent canopied trailer loading bay.

“Fercell has been delivering industrial size reduction and recycling systems and industrial ventilation systems for over four decades”

Wood shredding & dust extraction

In operation, waste wood is placed in a waste compound in palletised piles, from where it is taken by telehandler and loaded directly into the hopper of the WEIMA WL20 shredder.

Due to the extended length of some of the skeletal waste, the shredder was supplied with a bespoke, oversized hopper with a pivot point designed to feed the material directly into the shredder’s cutters. In addition, due to the requirements to minimise dust emissions from the process, the shredder hopper was equipped with a retractable roof and multiple suction points, which in turn are connected to a centralised ducting system serviced by an F320 compact filtration system.

Along with controlling the fine airborne particles from the process, the F320 filter system is safe for operation in confined spaces classified as potentially explosive with the addition of both ATEX explosion relief panels and an automatic H20 sprinkler system. Collection and removal of the extracted dust is safe and clean thanks to the negatively pressurised collection bins with removable plastic liners.

The WL20 processes material via WEIMA’s preparatory patented ‘V’ rotor through an interchangeable screen, which grades the shred until it’s small enough to pass through. After shredding, the material drops onto a swan-neck belt conveyor equipped with automatic ferrous metal separation, with any tramp

metal removed into a tipping skip at the conveyor head, before the shredded output drops into a series of chainconveyors.

Material transportation

The chain conveyors transport material from the back of the plant room, rising vertically (at 90°) up and across the biomass silo to the canopied truck port. Within the series of chain-conveyors, there are motorised slide dampers which enable material to be directly discharged at specific points, including into the biomass storage silo and along the entire length of an articulated walking-floor trailer.

The fail-safe control system communicates with all parts of the system, making operation and observation of the system straightforward. With the addition of inverter drives, each of the system’s conveyors can be adjusted and fine-tuned to ensure seamless transport of shredded material between the shredder and any of its discharge points.

Fercell has been delivering industrial size reduction and recycling systems and industrial ventilation systems for over four decades. From product, installation and servicing to spares and repairs, Fercell provides complete solutions. Fercell is the UK distributor of WEIMA Maschinenbau GmbH shredding and compaction equipment.

How Mirka makes refining processes easy

Abrasive technology and surface preparation techniques on a variety of surfaces continue to evolve. But one area businesses are considering in 2024 is process refinement, as they investigate ways to increase efficiencies to help reduce production times.

To help businesses streamline their processes, Mirka’s team of experienced technical experts constantly liaise with customers to understand their needs and requirements. Alongside this, they carry out regular audits to see if the business is getting the most out of the products being used, which enables Mirka to showcase where savings can be made, leading to the implementation of an action plan. This plan is designed to show the best practices for the business, which include specific processes for jobs, or the recommendation of certain products based on the surfaces being sanded. The benefits include increased overall efficiency and reduced production times, so customers view the audits as an asset that will help them in the short, medium and long term.

“To help businesses streamline their processes, Mirka’s team of experienced technical experts constantly liaise with customers to understand their needs and requirements”

Another way in which Mirka assists businesses is through a series of training programmes. These programmes are not a one-size-fits-all offering but are customisable based on the business’ needs and requirements and ensure they maximise the efficiencies of the products and abrasives being used. The training can either take place onsite or at Mirka’s training centre in Milton Keynes where everything is covered, starting in the classroom where objectives are set through to the hands-on part in the training centre itself.

This option provides the business with a great opportunity to test various products and tooling fully under the guidance of Mirka’s technical experts. The legacy and the latest –Häfele’s unwavering contribution to connection systems

Certain innovations in the panel fixings market are so ingrained in the history of furniture production that their backstory deserves to be told. And, while that’s the case, manufacturers in the field of connector technologies know they can also never stand still. With continuous demand for processes in the manufacturing industry to become more efficient, any new product that can grant joiners and installers the luxuries of greater time saving, and improved reliability are those which will have the most impact.

Häfele, which manufactures and distributes furniture fittings, lighting, hardware, ironmongery and accessories, has one of the strongest legacies in panel fixings and connector technologies in the construction industry. Having created Minifix, one of the earliest connector systems on the market, its ongoing commitment to innovation and

development has since seen it introduce several evolutionary products that overcome the challenges of the modern tradesperson.

Here, we explore two of its most reputable and renowned solutions, both of which support its customers to speed up the delivery of finished products and projects, while simultaneously improving quality of finish.

The Minifix legacy

A global company, Häfele has long developed and distributed manufacturing and joinery products that are loved and relied on by professionals across the industry. But it is the Minifix which completely revolutionised the world of furniture, and still dominates it today.

In 1954, 31 years after the business was established as a distributor of specialist products for the hardware and tool industry in Aulendorf in Württemberg,

Häfele made its first steps into production. From the outset, its founders had a clear focus – make innovative products based on customer need –which is a mission that serves it as well now as it did seven decades ago.

Fast forward 20 years later, and its emphasis on innovation reached new levels with the set-up of an in-house development department in Germany. From this home in Nagold, Häfele began designing solutions that have had a lasting influence on furniture construction and how we join materials today.

In 1983, the Minifix connector system emerged from the production line for the first time. Using a centric ball principle, it combines a cylindrical eccentric box and cylindrical pin, which work to connect two panels using a clamping force – superior to that of other systems, including cams and pins – to bring the parts of a piece of furniture together.

102 FITTINGS, MATERIALS & COMPONENTS
“Having created Minifix, one of the earliest connector systems on the market, its ongoing commitment to innovation and development has since seen it introduce several evolutionary products that overcome the challenges of the modern tradesperson”

Immediately recognised as a simple mechanism with a highly effective outcome, the Minifix quickly became integral to the daily lives of furniture manufacturers and professional woodworkers the world over. It was sought by those looking to easily assemble furniture without the need for specialist tools, and who also wanted to save time and money compared to alternative options. And over the years that followed, it also paved the way for flatpack, self-assembly furniture, with manufacturers able to provide homeowners with the easy-to-use Minifix alongside the required panels, to construct their own products.

Today, the Minifix is available in more than 30 variations and over 500 million units are produced by Häfele Berlin each year, making it one of the most iconic and influential panel fixings available on the market.

Connection technology continued

A more recent addition to Häfele’s series of functional elements for toolfree furniture construction, the Häfele IXConnect spreading connector SC 8/25 is a one-piece connector that requires no glue, dowels or tools to install.

Simple in design and entirely concealed once complete, the connector has been developed as a patented piece of technology to dramatically improve furniture manufacturing, by offering a simple and efficient ‘plug and push’

process.

To use, installers can push the connectors into an 8mm hole before pushing the panel components together by hand, triggering both bolt components of the connector to synchronously expand in the drill hole. Used for cabinets, small furniture items, and drawers, the connectors feature a fixed concealed connection, which means the panels won’t come apart.

Made for a minimum thickness of 15mm, the IXConnect spreading connector is made from plastic and can be used in MDF and chipboard panels in combination with wooden dowels. The IXConnect spreading connector 8/25 is also covered by a 25-year lifetime guarantee for added peace of mind.

Continually harking back to its focus on designing products for customer need, Häfele has used the success of the Minifix, and its ability to improve manufacturing performance, as a basis for the development of other gamechanging products which will continue to influence the industry for decades to come. Astute in its understanding of the daily needs of joiners and installers across the world today, there is only one question to ask – what will it create next?

The Minifix and IXConnect will be on show on Häfele’s stand (4C16) at the InstallerSHOW, 25th-27th June at the NEC.

Think CNC ... think Masterwood

Since the merger with KDT Machinery, Masterwood has introduced further machines for use in the panel industry. Over the past few years, its range has expanded to include high-speed drilling/routering CNC’s, beam saws, panel saws, and now a selection of edge banders. These new additions are built by KDT in China, before being sent to the Masterwood factory in Rimini, Italy, where they are upgraded to meet CE regulations, and are now being sold around Europe under the Masterwood name.

The latest additions include:

Beam saws: With sheet cutting sizes from 3200 x 3180mm up to 4300 x 4280mm; these are solidly built, fastworking machines, and can be supplied with automatic rear loading systems to maximise space and production.

Panel saws: Having already proven a success with sales and good reviews across Europe, the first panel saws from Masterwood are now available in the UK. These high-specification machines are fully computer-controlled for stop, fence and saw positioning.

automatic edge banders. Solidly built to reduce vibration and increase the quality of the final product, the machines are available in three models, from entry to high production.

Matrix bed CNC’s: The Matrix bed collection starts with the entry 2500 x 1250mm bed, working up to beds of 7500mm in length. These machines are built with a solid frame bed, with the gantries driven on both sides of the matrix bed for added accuracy and reliability. A new edition, known as the Winner HP, has recently been introduced. This special matrix bed is equipped with a high-efficient vacuum system which

allows an MDF baseboard to be fitted and ensures even small components are held firmly in place, while also allowing positioning of vacuum pods anywhere on the baseboard.

Pod & rail CNC’s: These CNC machines can be supplied in all formats for solid timbers, panels, composites, and other materials. This includes long or short beds, cantilever or gantry designs, manual or automatic beds, in three-, four-, or five-axis formats.

Special CNC’s and production lines: A recent introduction of the Teknoline, a CNC for high levels of door frame production, bolsters the innovative machining options Masterwood offers. Other dedicated machines include the 4WIN – for windows, Project Door – for full-size doors, DoorLine – for door locks and hinges, and Teknomat – for window and frame components.

Atlantic Technological University selects HOMAG CENTATEQ P-110 CNC processing centre

The Department of Furniture Design & Technology, School of Design & Creative Arts at The Atlantic Technology University in Connemara is regarded both nationally and internationally as a leading provider of third-level courses in furniture, wood products and teacher education (Design Graphics and Construction).

The campus educates over 240 students a year, studying different degree courses and apprenticeships in its state-of-the-art workshop facilities featuring the most advanced machinery and computer technology.

With links to major furniture design and manufacturing companies around the globe, this allows students to avail of work placement opportunities with leaders in furniture design and manufacture and interior fitout sectors.

Graduates are recognised for their innovative, creative and responsive approach to projects. They frequently win, and are shortlisted for, national and international awards that influence and develop the industry.

“In recent years, along with our undergraduate degree programmes, we have expanded our offering to include teaching apprentices in Wood Manufacturing and Finishing,” explains Paul Leamy, Head of Department of Furniture Design & Technology. He continues, “It is vital that we train all our students on the most advanced technologies available so that when they leave, they have been exposed to the most up-to-date equipment, giving them the best opportunity to gain employment and providing the industry with much-needed talent.”

The process of acquiring a new CNC machine

“As part of our commitment to having the latest machinery, we recognised the need to replace one of our ageing CNC processing centres. When looking to acquire new capital equipment, ATU has

a fair and transparent European-wide tendering process in place which must be strictly adhered to.

“We drew up our required specification for the new CNC processing centre – size, five-axis head, table types, software, cost, etc. – and then we uploaded the invitation to tender on www.etenders.gov.ie so all interested parties were free to apply.

“Each company that tendered had exactly the same information; they had to demonstrate their machine was compliant with our clearly defined requirements. At the end of the process, it was Electro-Tech (HOMAG UK’s partner in Ireland) that won the tender, with the HOMAG CENTATEQ P-110 CNC.”

CENTATEQ P-110 CNC purchase and installation

“Following Electro-Tech’s successful tender, our procurement department issued them with contracts. The delivery and installation process were handled

“For the first time we can train students on a five-axis CNC which opens up new and exciting possibilities for the students, apprentices and lecturers alike”

superbly by Electro-Tech and HOMAG.

To minimise disruption, we specified that the installation had to take place in the first two weeks of January when the least number of students would be on campus.

“This was adhered to and the whole process went very smoothly, including the online and onsite training of our staff by the installation engineers. For the first time, we can train students on a five-axis CNC which opens up new and exciting possibilities for the students, apprentices and lecturers alike.

“This means that when students graduate from our programmes, they have the very best qualifications and a good level of experience to enable them to pursue a career in the woodworking industry. That is so important to us; it is the fundamental reason we exist,” concludes Paul.

The CENTATEQ P-110 model is used by kitchen, office and solid wood furniture manufacturers, as well as by joinery workshops for the construction of stairs, windows and doors.

Häfele adds black nickel to Metalla range

Häfele UK has expanded its Metalla collection of hinges with a new black nickel finish. Following the launch of Metalla 310 and its rising popularity, Häfele UK has widened its colour options, giving more choice to furniture makers, joiners and tradespeople – and their customers.

Hafele’s Metalla 310 hinge is the result of three years of global research and development. It has been created with quality and long-term performance firmly in mind, with a lower price point than most other hinges with a similar specification. Initially launched in a nickel finish, Häfele has introduced an on-trend dark option that is available across the entire range, including the most popular 110° and 155° product lines.

“Metalla 310 is quickly proving to be one of our most popular hinges,” says Justin Crofts, Category Manager – Furniture Construction at Häfele UK. “And with dark hardware cementing itself as a mainstay of furniture and interior design, it’s a natural evolution to build on the collection with a sleek, subtle black nickel option.”

Specially designed to give kitchen manufacturers and installers a highquality choice, whatever the application, the Metalla 310 is suitable for standard 110° opening, wide-angle openings, post hinge, and 30 or 45-degree openings. It is also available in a soft-close or a non-softclose variant.

Despite its lower price point, Metalla 310 has been tested to at least 40,000 cycles and 48 hours against corrosion resistance in accordance with FIRA Level H, EN 15570 level 2 / LGA quality certification. It also comes with a 25year guarantee, meaning manufacturers, joiners and installers can be confident they’re providing customers with complete reliability, ease of use and enduring quality.

“Customers who’ve swapped their usual hinge for the Metalla 310 have reported saving up to half of their usual spend, making it one of the most valuable fittings in the toolbox,” Justin continues. “With the addition of Metalla Black Nickel, we’re building on that by combining value and quality with a new dramatic aesthetic.”

Metalla Black Nickel is the latest addition to Hafele’s range of dark ironmongery, hardware and fittings. The manufacturer and distributor also offers dark-coloured drawer systems, sliding door gear, door hinges, and closers as well as black and anthracite cover caps for its awardwinning Free range of flap fitting.

Metalla will be on show on Häfele’s stand (4C16) at the InstallerSHOW, 25th27th June at the NEC. www.hafele.co.uk/metalla

Slat wall system is the newest addition to HPP’s décor solutions

A slat wall system that first turned heads at the highly successful HPX trade show run by Hill’s Panel Products (HPP) has now gone on sale. Originally popular with shopfitters, slat wall panels have become a favourite with interior designers for use in all sorts of spaces, the aesthetic providing a natural and flexible decorative effect.

HPP’s new range consists of a paperwrapped oak panel and a black one, with other options including natural oak and walnut veneers and a black painted oak veneer.

“It’s another, welcome, addition to our portfolio that means our customers can fulfil every aspect of their order through us,” says HPP Sales Manager, Chris Essex. “Slat walls are very much in vogue at the

moment. It’s a quick and easy way to create an eye-catching finish to cover all kinds of walls.

“Our innovative interlocking system is highly adaptable and because of its dimensions, our range cuts down on waste – an important factor in the drive to make our industry more sustainable.

“But as well as being quick and easy, it’s a very cost-effective way of creating an

effect; the feedback we’ve had on price point has been very favourable and that is being reflected in the sales.”

Another factor adding to its popularity is the size of the panels. The range is made up of 40mm x 90mm panels, smaller than the conventional 1200mm, which means smaller offcuts to complete a run, and easier manoeuvrability for cutting to size and for light switches.

116

Other unique selling points include:

• Lighter packs for easier handling – HPP’s weigh 30kg compared to 48kg or 56kg from other manufacturers.

• A cavity between the slat wall system and the wall which makes it possible to run cables or insert thermal or acoustic insulation panels.

• 2cm deep staves, or almost 1cm in the minislat option – not achievable with conventional milled and covered panel.

• And since it is a wrapped system, the profiles can be covered with different veneers or foils – on request only.

Based in Oldham, Greater Manchester, with a trade counter in Sheffield, and serving almost the whole of the UK, HPP has built an unrivalled reputation for the quality of its products and customer service over its 34-year history.

The family-owned firm makes and supplies board, doors, fitting and accessories for the fitted furniture industry,

particularly kitchens and bedrooms, and is constantly investing in its plant, processes and ranges to make it the complete onestop shop for retailers and fitters.

Elcon & iVision – winning partners for dust capture

Vertical panel saws offer many advantages over more traditional sliding table saws, but one area that is often flagged as a concern with operators is dust extraction. Manufacturers of wall saws are well aware of the issue, but few have found a workable solution. Enter Elcon.

Elcon, based in the Netherlands, has been producing woodworking machinery for over 75 years and has specialised in vertical panel saw design since 1971. Addressing the issue of dust collection, Elcon has developed a patented and award-winning solution, the LIMPIO system.

As standard, Elcon panel saws have an effective extraction point from the enclosed saw head. The majority of the blade sits within the saw guard during cutting, providing adequate dust removal for most operations. When cutting fibrous or cementitious boards such as MDF, Gypsum or GRP regularly, additional

extraction methods should be considered to minimise operators’ exposure to potentially harmful dust.

For maximum extraction efficiency, the LIMPIO system includes a rear dust capture tray. With its own secondary extraction point that travels directly behind the saw head whether cutting vertically or horizontally. The point of cut is almost totally enclosed, sandwiched, with the machine extracting dust from both sides of the cut. Dust emission values are reduced to less than 0.5 mg/ m3.

The LIMPIO system is only half the solution. A suitable dust extraction system must be coupled to the machine to ensure full efficiency and maximum waste capture. Daltons Wadkin, sole agents for the Elcon in the UK and Ireland, have carried out rigorous testing to find the perfect partner. Italian extraction specialist, iVision, provided the winning

solution with its new Wood Line and Extrusion Line units. These high-powered standalone systems can be specified with a range of filter systems for working with all types of materials, producing optimal results.

The iVision ergonomic design with wheeled bins allows waste to be removed safely. Filter monitoring is key to any system. iVision has introduced an optional touchscreen control system that gives a clear visual indicator of the filter performance. Taking it a step further for true industry 4.0 connectivity, each iVision unit can be centrally monitored from any office PC with a web interface allowing workshop managers to remotely monitor the performance.

Bags of life left in it

17 years on, and a Ranheat 150kW warm air heater that has been in daily use is still going strong. Chris Franklin, MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd – a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipment –continues his series of articles exclusively for Furniture and Joinery Production. This issue, he looks at an installation from 2007 that has been 17 years in operation.

For many startup companies, their first extraction system is a simple free-standing bag system connected to the woodworking machinery. There is also the need to keep the premises warm and deciding how to get rid of the dust extracted from the machinery and the offcuts from manufacture.

The answer for many is to install a warm air heater fitted with a bag loader to safely dispose of the dust and heat the premises. Hand-loading

solids into a warm air heater is a very time-consuming process as they need to be loaded four or five times an hour to provide constant heat and to burn cleanly.

The answer to the offcuts is to install a small woodchipper connected to the bag extraction system. This mixes the dust with the granulate and makes a perfect fuel for loading with a bag loader.

The Ranheat system featured has been in daily use for each working day and consumes around 1 ¼ tonnes per week over five days.

The heater is fitted with a summer/winter diverter as standard, so the heat produced in the summer is vented to atmosphere to avoid skip costs during none heating periods.

The company recently installed a bespoke Indusvent superblower external dust extraction system and are looking to replace the long service Ranheat bag-loader

system with a new warm air heater and a 4m diameter 37m3 storage silo. This higher level of automation will allow the system to store the extracted material in the summer and then be able to run the system overnight, so the workshop is kept at a constant temperature.

Ranheat are due to supply all of the equipment later this year, which includes a purpose made steel profiled building to protect the investment.

For further information on all types and sizes of industrial woodburning equipment from 75kW upwards, contact Ranheat. Ranheat also make spares and service and repair other makes of woodburning boilers and heaters.

Wood waste heater saves company £500 a month on wood waste disposal

A company in Surrey has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on waste disposal and heating bills. Founded 19 years ago, Deadline TML is a scenic large prop-building company based in Woking.

As the company’s 400 square metre manufacturing base has no heating installed, the business found itself relying on portable electric heaters to warm the factory when the weather turned really cold. However, with increasing energy costs, Director Dave Simmons was keen to find a more cost-effective solution.

The answer appeared when Dave visited a friend’s workshop and saw how that business used a wood waste heater to reduce its operational costs, and Dave was recommended to speak to Wood Waste Technology.

“Investing in a wood waste heater seemed an obvious solution to provide us with free heating to keep our employees warm, whilst also reducing our waste disposal bills,” says Dave. “It was one of those decisions that was just a nobrainer!”

Following a site survey and review, a WT10 heater was purchased and installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers. Deadline TML also purchased a summer heat dump for the burner, to allow the company to keep burning its wood waste through the summer months, by sending the heat to atmosphere.

“We love the wood waste heater,” Dave continues. “We just wish we’d bought one sooner! We’re delighted with the savings on waste disposal, as we were spending around £500 a month on skips. Everyone

loves how it warms the workshop for free – it’s nice knowing we won’t have the expense of running portable heaters again in winter.”

Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology adds: “It’s amazing how many enquiries come through as a result of someone seeing another company’s wood waste heater. We’re always grateful to our customers who recommend us, to help other business owners save money on waste disposal and heating costs.”

Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their

waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares “up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers”.

In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precisionengineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems –a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs.
