Dorothy Lee (Burke) Jackson affectionally called ‘Dot’ entered eternal rest on Thursday, March 28, 2024. She arrived on earth to begin her life’s journey on September 2, 1939 to John Henry and Queenie Mae Burke in Baltimore, Maryland. The family moved to the Fentress section of Chesapeake, VA shortly thereafter.

Dorothy grew up in the Fentress section of Chesapeake, VA along with her three siblings: John, Calvin and Evelyn. She had a calm demeanor and a cheerful disposition. She would always greet you with her beautiful smile to let you know that she was happy to see you and was concerned about your well-being. Dot became a caregiver to her siblings and grand-mother, Louise Minor at an early age. This situation brought out her compassion, organization and leadership skills to ensure that the family was good.

Dorothy was educated in the Norfolk County now Chesapeake Public School System where she attended the school in Bell Mills, I. C. Norcom in Portsmouth and Crestwood High School. She graduated with the Bombers Class of 1957 and played clarinet in the high-stepping marching band. Dot pursued and obtained her license in Cosmetology after high school.

Dorothy’s career started in 1957 where she was a cook/waitress at People’s Drug Store. She later became a Domestic Worker for the Graham Family (owner of Graham Funeral Home) until she landed a job working in the cafeteria for Chesapeake Public Schools (Southeastern Elementary, Great Bridge Jr. High, and Hickory Middle School) where she met life-long friends and was able to encourage hundreds of administrators, support staff and students. Dot retired after serving over 30 years.

Dorothy had an entrepreneurial spirit as she used her Cosmetology skill to ‘fix hair’ and had clients looking their best! She used her culinary skills to provide delicious desserts to the community and others. Dot made homemade ice cream, rolls, cinnamon buns, doughnuts, pies (sweet potato, lemon custard, coconut), cake (red velvet, chocolate) and freeze-pops (all flavors). There were many satisfied customers and recipients.

Dorothy met and married a South Carolinian, Norman Jackson Jr. in 1965. They made their home and reared their family of five in Fentress. Both contributed to the well-being of the community and were involved in the Fentress Civic League.

Dorothy’s involvement with the church and spiritual growth spanned across the spectrum of things to do in the African Methodist Episcopal church. Her spiritual journey began at St. John Holiness Church then later she joined Centerville Chapel A.M.E. Church where she faithfully served as a Steward, Stewardess, Usher, Women’s Missionary Society, Pastor’s Aide, Class Leader, Lay Organization, Choirs (Adult and Senior), Sunday School and Kitchen Worker. She did everything except preach. She also attended the Virginia Annual Conferences. Her love and ability to sing moved many during church services. Dot also started a Senior Club at the church to promote fellowship and memorable moments across the area.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and her three siblings: John (Frances) Burke, Calvin (Flora) Burke and Evelyn L. Kellam.

She leaves to cherish her legacy and memories; Husband, Norman Jackson, Jr.; Son, Norman (Doral) Jackson; Daughters; Carsietta Burke, JeQuil Jackson; Grand-children (4); Carlan (Priscilla) Burke, Carjim Burke, Norman N. Jackson, Jr., Jynara Jackson; Great-grand children (3); Caelan Burke, Aniya Burke, Zariah Wright; Father-InLaw; Norman Jackson, Sr.; Sisters-In-Law; Charlese Austin, Mattie Collie, Mary Anne Washington and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Dot will truly be missed and although her Circle of Life has ended on earth, she has begun a new life and will be that angel watching over us. ~ The Family
