HMinisterGlindaM.Smith Jer ourney

Minister Glinda M. Smith was born on October 31, 1956, in Manhattan, New York, to the late Mamie Lee Hughes and Charles Smith. She was raised in the Bronx and baptized at Mount Hermon Baptist Church, where her foundation offaithwasfirmlyestablished.
Throughout her life, she remained a devoted servant of God, faithfully connected to several ministries, including Mount Hermon Baptist Church, Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church, St. Stephens Baptist Church, and most recently, Gethsemane Baptist Church in Newport News, Virginia.
A proud graduate of George Washington High School, Glinda continued her education at Virginia State University, earning her degree in 1979. She worked diligently for Verizon Telecommunications in the billing department until her retirement in 2010. Committed to serving others, she spent seven years doing community service following the events of 9/11 at Mariners Temple Baptist Church and was activeinseveralwomen’sministriesthroughouther life.
In May 2024, after years of faithful service in evangelism and missionary work, Glinda answered her formal call to ministry and preached her initial sermon at Mount Hermon Baptist Church under Pastor Wenzell P. Jackson. Her ministry journey included serving alongside Rev. Antonio T. Jordan— her spiritual brother turned pastor—with whom she assistedinevangelisticeffortsbeginningin2016.

Known for giving making people feel like family, she was a delightful presence in every congregation she touched. At St. Stephens Baptist Church, she served as an associate minister, and after relocating to Virginia, she continued her ministry as an associate minister and a dedicated member of the prayer team at GethsemaneBaptistChurch.
Relocating to Virginia was bittersweet, leaving New York, the only home she had ever known, but she found joy in being near her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was grateful to be welcomed with open arms by the Gethsemane Baptist Church family. Despite physical limitations, Glinda served with unwavering commitment and poured every ounceofherstrengthintotheworkoftheLord.
Minister Glinda Smith was vibrant, loving, and unforgettable. She brightened every room she entered, whether walking or rolling in with her wheelchair.

With her strong alto voice, charismatic personality, and joyful spirit, she could make anyone smile. She loved her Lay’s chips with spinach dip, watching Queen Latifah in The Equalizer, and she proudly claimed Denzel Washington as her “husband”—and said so often with a laugh. She enjoyed being fancy, dressing stylishly, shopping for jewelry, and always reminding everyone: “I don’t think I’m cute… I am cute!”
She was wise, approachable, and compassionate—someone you could talk to about anything. She offered solid counsel, heartfelt prayers, and unwavering support. She loved family activities, spending quality time with loved ones, and, most importantly, treasured her peaceful, quiet moments with God. Glinda was sunshine on a rainy day, a light in every space, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know her.
Minister Glinda Smith was preceded in death by her parents, her grandmother, Mamie Monroe, and her brothers, Guy Hughes and George Monroe Hughes.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Kenya Tameka White Sikes; her granddaughters, Diamond Yanique White, Lynette Michelle White (Andre Daryl Wilson), and Ayriss Ellanah Sikes; and her greatgrandchildren, Jamari Marsett Hardy, Journey Angeline Johnson, and Serenity-Monae Arianna White. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Emile Hughes, godson, Reverend Derrick Jackson, and a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, adopted grandchildren, church family, and friends whose lives were enriched by her presence.
