emorial Day is a time to take a moment and recognize all of the blessings in our lives that are possible because of the freedoms our soldiers defend. Their sacrifice is a tangible part of our days, and deserving of year-round gratitude. Nathan Weemhoff, who served in the Michigan Army National Guard for seven years and had two deployments in the Middle East, discussed the holiday with GATHER Veterans and detailed what it means to him. When thinking of Memorial Day, what immediately comes to mind for Nathan is remembering the fallen and their sacrifice. “I think of the brothers that we’ve lost since coming home all connected to their time there. I think of the sacrifices they made. I take time to honor them and the many who came before as well.”

As a current teacher, Nathan views Memorial Day through the lens of history. “Memorial Day is a special day where we as a nation take time to remember our fallen. But not only that. We also take time to celebrate the life and freedom and family that sacrifice made possible by spending time together.” He encourages people to understand the significance of Memorial Day as a time of reflection for the fallen and appreciation for what those servicemen and women sacrificed their lives for. “It is different from Armed Forces Day, and it’s not Veteran’s Day,” he clarifies. “It’s Memorial Day.” Who do you remember on Memorial Day, if anyone in particular? “I remember Jake. He was a brother, a friend, and I served with him for seven years. I also remember Nathaniel, who was a great friend and leader.” On Memorial Day and many other days each year, Nathan celebrates their lives by carrying their memories with him, honoring them for giving their all for our country.
