WORD FROM YOUR HOST
What a joy it is to be back to full throttle after so long spent under the cloud of Covid. Last year, of course, we were able to hold our annual Global Gaming Awards, but with restrictions on international travel put in place, it was not quite the same. 2022 marks a return to full form.
And what a year we are honoring in these awards. The industry has grown tremendously, with vast markets opening, laudable new products and a growing roster of companies and personnel. The industry has continued to exhibit
WORD FROM THE GLOBAL GAMING AWARDS LEAD PARTNER
We feel incredibly privileged to serve again as the lead partner for the annual Global Gaming Awards in Las Vegas on October 10th at The Venetian Convention and Expo Center. We are eager to reunite with our international industry colleagues after a year of hard work and new achievements, recognize all the accomplishments, and toast to success.
BetConstruct continued to improve its platform throughout 2022, helping operators to stand out in a highly competitive environment. We understand to establish BetConstruct in the US market successfully, we will need to create credibility and visibility while differentiating BetConstruct’s offerings from those of its more recognized competitors who have already begun courting US operators.
Innovation never stops at BetConstruct, as our global teams
constantly refines and redefines the boundaries of the iGaming industry with ever-evolving products. We value industry recognition and responsibility and will continue to provide operators with the best possible content, services and solutions.
Hard work, success and commitment will be celebrated at the Global Gaming Awards Las Vegas 2022. We are happy to meet our peers at such a major gathering, and we wish the best of luck to all the nominees. To all winners, our congratulations on their well-deserved success. Good luck to everyone and see you soon.
Anna Shahbazyan Regional Director, BetConstruct LatAmdynamism in the face of this massive change, and that is what we hope to commemorate. As an indication of the changes over the past 12 months, in our latest iteration of the Awards, we are happy to be honoring companies in a new category: sportsbook supplier.
The Global Gaming Awards is rightly regarded as celebrating best-in-class individuals and companies. Our efforts to maintain this reputation are both tireless and full proof. We gather self-nominations, assemble a judging panel, narrow down a shortlist, and then have KPMG independently adjudicate the voting process. These are the elite accolades in the industry. While winning means being voted in by both friends and competitors alike, even the act of nomination is an achievement unto itself. With another ceremony upon us, I would like to thank lead partner BetConstruct, KPMG in the Crown Dependencies, the GA and GI Events and Editorial staff, the Judges, and those who have come to attend the ceremony.
Gary Roudette CEO, Players Publishing and host of the Global Gaming AwardsFROM THE AWARDS ADJUDICATOR
KPMG have acted as independent adjudicator to the Global Gaming Awards since their inception in 2014, and I have been the person lucky enough – for every year until 2020 of course – to travel to represent KPMG at the ceremony. In 2021, KPMG was represented by Michelle Wroan, the Senior Partner of our LA office, but this year I’m delighted to be returning to G2E after a three year absence!
However, whether attending virtually or in-person, our voting and adjudication process for the Awards remains consistent: we review the GGA’s system and tools for collecting votes (and ensure judges cannot vote in categories where they have a conflict), check that the winner and runner-up in each category has been determined correctly based on votes cast, and select a random sample of judges whom we contact to check that the votes recorded for them in the system are a complete and accurate reflection
of their voting.
KPMG’s commitment to and involvement with this sector is, I believe, unparalleled, and that is why we so welcome the opportunity to support the Global Gaming Awards. The combination of a thorough selection process, a highly distinguished panel of judges, and the organizers’ commitment to independent verification of the judges’ decision means that any company or individual that makes it to the final shortlist should be extremely proud. Even when we have not been able to meet in person to celebrate that, the achievement has remained undimmed, but it will be particularly good to back with you all again this year!
Micky Swindale COO, KPMG Islands Group FROM THE AGA PRESIDENTA year ago, we convened at G2E as our industry was getting back on its feet and coming together for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. G2E 2022 comes at a much different juncture for our industry, as US commercial gaming revenue is on pace to set an all-time high for a second consecutive year. Despite potential macroeconomic headwinds, our foundation for success is stronger than ever as gaming enters a new era of growth.
Since 2014, the Global Gaming Awards have celebrated gaming’s top companies and leaders that are pushing the industry forward and creating the best player experiences. This year’s Global Gaming Awards
nominees reflect the excitement and momentum surrounding our industry. From land-based and digital casino gaming to sports betting and digital payments, each company and individual on this year’s shortlist is advancing gaming through innovation.
I’m proud that many American Gaming Association members continue to be finalists for these prestigious awards, and I wish every short-lister the best of luck when the winners are announced this October at G2E.
Congratulations to this year’s honorees and finalists!
Bill Miller President and CEO American Gaming AssociationWhat a year it has been since the last Global Gaming Awards. As a journalist covering the industry, I must be careful to avoid using clichéd language, those turns of phrase that begin cropping up in every second piece of writing. The cliché of this past year? Record breaking. Record breaking growth, record breaking expansion in markets across the Americas, record breaking amounts of money. According to one report, the value of the legal gaming market in the United States now exceeds $200bn. And what has happened as the industry has expanded? Not just a breakneck pace of growth in the market, but also a breakneck pace of growth in innovation.
The year 2022 began thunderously. In early January, sports betting came to New York, and overnight the Empire State became the biggest market in the US, with handle consistently breaking the $1bn monthly mark. Other states opened too, including Connecticut (which now allows sports betting and iGaming) and, more recently, Kansas (where mobile sports betting was introduced just in time for this autumn’s football season). Over thirty states, plus Washington DC, now allow sports betting.
As these new markets join ones already active, the volume of bets has continued to grow, especially during the all-important months of September to June, when the NFL, NBA, NHL, college football and the March Madness basketball tournament are all active and attracting bettors. In
the last year, no fewer than one-fifth of adult Americans bet on sports. In the 2022 NFL season, 46.6 million Americans say they will place a bet, an increase of 3% compared to last year (according to data from the American Gaming Association). And, in a change from how things were done in the past, a full 80% of these bets were done online.
Indeed, it would not be an understatement to say that betting has become an important pillar of sports fandom in the Americas. An entire economic ecosystem is emerging around the pastime. Major media companies like ESPN and Bartstool Sports are looking for a piece of the action and adapting their offerings to feature more information related to betting. Anyone watching a sports game, whether on TV or in the arena, will be confronted with a deluge of advertising by sportsbooks pushing their latest promotions. Beloved franchises and leagues have entered into media partnerships. The eagerness of the teams to welcome betting (which just a few years ago was unheard of) appears to be paying off. NFL viewership, for instance, has grown significantly from a low point a decade ago. Much of this growth has been attributed to the rise in popularity of sports betting.
The year’s other big debut market in the Americas was Ontario, Canada, which in April welcomed both mobile sports betting and iGaming. The move was significant. Some say it might even be a bigger market than New THE YEAR IN REVIEW
York. Without a doubt, it is the most populous province in Canada and serves as a bellwether for other markets in North America, where growth is expected in the coming year.
The move also signals greater maturity for the iGaming market across the region as a whole. Pundits predict that iGaming will one day exceed sports betting as a source of revenue for the industry. While compared to Canada, expansion was not overly impressive in the United States (only Connecticut was welcomed to a group that includes five other states), it is expected that this
“One must not forget to note the continued growth and recovery of land-based casinos”
vertical will expand in the coming year.
The New York State Legislature, for instance, is due to introduce a bill in the coming session, and, given the success of sports betting last year, it is widely expected to pass. Latin America is also a region for iGaming that has shown progress and growth over the past year. The rising star of iGaming in the Americas is indicative of another major trend of the year: European iGaming operators crossing the ocean to set up shop. Europe has had a vibrant iGaming sector for years now. It has evolved to markets and to the tastes of customers. Now it is training its sights in these new jurisdictions that promise untold potential. We in the Americas can use the time-tested expertise of the Europeans. Expect more arrivals as companies like Relax Gaming and Pariplay set up shop on these shores. Expect, too, more blockbuster partnerships and acquisitions.
One must not forget to note the continued growth and recovery of land-based casinos. Land based remains the single biggest pillar of the industry and, with every passing month, the pandemic recedes further into the past.
The land-based industry has made a full recovery. People, freed from
the confines of their homes and the strictures of Covid-19, have been visiting Las Vegas, Atlantic City and regional destinations in record droves. The residual effects of the pandemic are mainly being felt in the supply chain crisis, where shortages of materials have not kept up with demand. Materials will certainly be needed as new casinos are built, such as in Chicago, where Bally’s was recently awarded the city’s sole license, or in Bristol, Virginia, where Hard Rock is in the process of constructing one of the Southeast’s premier destinations.
Tribal, that stalwart of the land-based industry, has been a great beneficiary of the return to normalcy. But in other ways, too, the Tribal sphere of the industry has been evolving. Among the most significant occurrences in this realm to have happened over the last year can be seen in the movement to commercial operations. The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians completed its purchase of the Palms Casino Resort and became the first Tribal operator to have a location on the fabled Las Vegas Strip. There have also been partnerships between tribes and commercial operators in instances where online betting goes live. An example of this would be
in Connecticut, where a license to operate iGaming required a deal between Tribal interests and commercial interests (Foxwoods teamed up with DraftKings, while Mohegan Sun did so with FanDuel).
With the further evolution in land based, one must not overlook the nitty-gritty areas of operating that have been improved: cashless technology, casino management systems, rewards programs. All of these areas have refined their offerings to better suit the needs of both the operator and the customer.
At the Global Gaming Awards, we celebrate these rapid changes. All the companies nominated have played an impressive role in shaping this fast-evolving industry. It is a testament to sound management and sagacious perspicacity that the industry has been able to keep up so well and continues to satisfy the demands of the customer. Of course, whatever the monumental changes that have occurred over the last year, we must not forget that this is only the beginning. There is so much more to come.
