La leggenda della testa di moro Passeggiando per le vie siciliane è facile rimanere incantati dinanzi alle maestose Teste di Moro, in siciliano note anche come “Raste”, che da secoli arricchiscono e colorano le balconate di questa magnifica terra. esse trovano un’origine comune in un’antica leggenda: protagonisti di questa struggente vicenda un giovane Moro e una bellissima fanciulla siciliana. di nobili origini, che visse un amore clandestino con un giovane arabo, ma questo amore impossibile venne ben presto scoperto ed il disonorevole atto punito con la decapitazione di entrambi i giovani innamorati. La vergogna di questo amore sarebbe stata inoltre proclamata dall’afssione di entrambe le teste (tramutate per l’occasione in vasi) su di una balconata. Lo scempio, esaltato da queste teste poste alla mercé dei passanti, sarebbe stato in tal modo un monito fattivo contro ogni altra possibile sconveniente passione. Per tale motivo le teste di moro verrebbero realizzate in coppia, in ricordo e in onore dei due innamorati assassinati.

The legend of the Moor’s head
Walking through the Sicilian streets it is easy to be enchanted by the majestic Moro Heads, also known in Sicilian as “Raste”, which for centuries have enriched and colored the balconies of this magnificent land. they find a common origin in an ancient legend: protagonists of this poignant story a young Moor and a beautiful Sicilian girl of noble origins, who lived an underground love with a young Arab, but this impossible love was soon discovered and the dishonorable act punished with the beheading of both young lovers. The shame of this love was also proclaimed by the posting of both heads (turned into vases for the occasion) on a balcony. The havoc, exalted by these heads placed at the mercy of passersby, would thus have been an effective warning against any other possible unseemly passion. For this reason, the Moor’s heads would be made in pairs, in memory and in honor of the two murdered lovers.
