Apparenza nella filosofia antica è un termine che ha un riferimento diretto con l’opinione, perchè legato alla percezione

sensibile,

soggettiva,

ne all’idea di verità, di realtà. In

dei

fenomeni,

e

che

particolare, Platone - che

quindi pure

in

qualche

modo

contrappo-

sovrappone i due termini consideran-

do il fatto che l’opinione stimolata dalle apparenze costituisce il primo gradino verso la verità -,

nel mito del-

la caverna allerta sul rischio del poter venire affabulati dall’ombra, e su come facilmente questa possa essere scambiata per la realtà di concetti universali. L’apparenza è, di fatto e in ogni caso, una categoria fondamentale del sistema delle relazioni sociali, il baricentro tra il dentro e il fuori, tra l’essere e l’avere, tra il corpo e l’anima.

L’ornamento nel raffronto con “l’altro” diviene paraliguaggio, ovvero un sistema espressivo non codificato che automaticamente innesca una serie di imprevedibili relazioni (e reazioni) tra l’io e il mondo.

Il gioiello, strumento proprio del rituale dell’apparire, rientra a pieno titolo in quella categoria di elementi atti a soddifare l’impulso estetico e comunicativo dell’essere umano e la sua necessità imprimersi “plasticamente” sulla superficie del mondo, raccontandosi attraverso l’ostentazione di forme simboliche.

Nel caso di Manfred Bischoff questa naturale predisposizione arriva ad assumere una ulteriore complicazione. I suoi gioielli non soltanto si auto impongono come segni che stimolano questo processo identitario, ma chiedono di parteciparvi attivamente, stabilendo un rapporto duale paritario oggetto-uomo, fondato sull’empatia e sulla complicità..

Come il daimon è manifestazione fisica della coscienza intima dell’uomo spesso incarnata in animale, i gioielli di Bischoff sono l’espressione visibile dell’anima di chi li possiede, piccoli tabù individuali, esibiti ma inviolabili.

Chi sceglie di indossare i gioielli di Bischoff stringe con questi una specie di patto e impugna una sorta di sfida che sarà ricompensata appieno dal senso di compiacimento dato dal poter farsi custode di una intima rivelazione e portavoce di una sottile, portatile, provocazione. Deve, però, saper sfoggiare caparbiamente tanto l’oggetto, già di per sè indiscutibilmente attraente, quanto il rebus sibillino che lo sottende, e sostenere con sarcasmo e ironia l’inevitabile gioco di relazione/reazione/fraintendimento che si innescherà nell’incontro tra il piccolo miracolo scultoreo e l’interlocutore di turno.

E’ infatti da un qui pro quo generato dalle parole, dai loro possibili, ambigui intarsi lessicali, metrici, visivi che l’immaginario di Bischoff gradualmente prende corpo nell’oro puro, nel corallo rosa e nelle pietre preziose.

The exit is at the entrance. Come in un gioco enigmistico, i titoli dei suoi lavori fungono da grafemi attraverso i quali il “fruitore/ giocatore” può ricavare l’immagine risolutiva incarnata dal gioiello. Ma, secondo una strategia fatta di continui rimbalzi e depistaggi tra parola e immagine, atti a colpire “il cuore vuoto e strategico delle cose” 4 , il gioiello, una volta separato dal testo, si fa a sua volta rebus, e si decripta facendo appello al titolo. E’ così che “pezzi d’oro” arrivano a chiamarsi Freud o Foucault o Warhol, non per via di somiglianza ma per antonomasia: come un verso simbolicamente titola, così la mano istintivamente forgia.

Un’operazione che si compie quindi sulla compensazione, e sul complotto, tra grafia e figurazione e sull’osmosi tra la dimensione privata e la sfera pubblica, generando una serie di rebus ben assestati su una linea d’orizzonte sempre mobile, tra il serio e il faceto, tra citazione e doppio senso, tra intimità ed esteriorità, e che indica vie sempre nuove di accesso al lavoro. “Il linguaggio opera interamente nell’ambiguità, e la maggior parte del tempo non sapete assolutamente nulla di ciò che dite.” (Jaques Lacan)

Una poetica dell’allusione, dell’illusione, e della casualità, da intendersi come vocazione all’azione libera, autarchica, praticata da uno spirito onnivoro, democratico - per certi versi guidato da reminescenze comportamentali di matrice pop - che va collezionando “images trouvées” in contesti temporali e spaziali diversi, indistintamente nel presente, nel passato, nell’arte, nella vita. Per sottrarre il proprio bottino iconografico alla volatilità dello sguardo e alla trascendenza del ricordo, Bischoff ad ogni immagine intesta una carta, poi per conferire loro immanenza, le battezza nell’oro, restituendole al mondo sotto forma di bellezza, incastonata, eloquente, aggraziata.

Queste immagini raccontano episodi isolati di storie costruite su un lessico contaminato da generi “letterari” diversi (epico, popolare, satirico, mitologico, licenzioso), i cui protagonisti appartengono ad un universo allargato e omnicomprensivo della realtà (storica, artistica, autobiografica, domestica, mnemonica, onirica, scientifica).

Ma, pur sviluppando uno stile narrativo nomade che rifiuta intenzionalmente una fisionomia tematica fissa, i la-

vori di Manfred Bischoff presentano un registro estetico fortemente connotato, da leggère asimmetrie, lievi sproporzioni, prospettive eccentriche, equilibrismi funambolici, finiture superficiali e cromatiche calde, epiteliali.

Peculiarità che, unite ad una destrezza connaturata di manipolare lastre d’oro come fossero fogli di carta, distolgono dall’effettivo valore intrinseco del materiale, dirottando l’attrazione sul virtuosismo della forma piuttosto che sulla caratura del gioiello.

A chi riesce a tenere testa a questa liaison, l’opera di Bischoff si rivela come un’epifania che spalanca ad una ad una le vie d’accesso al significato delle immagini, al sarcasmo delle loro associazioni e all’armonica costruzione discorsiva che le sottende, e apre a un’esperienza emotivo-intellettiva molto individuale, e a una stupefacente rappresentazione di senso. Chi lo coglie, questo senso, tenderà a celarlo come un tesoro, compiacendosi nell’ostentare l’indizio superficiale della sua presunta esistenza (il gioiello, tranello perenne) perchè “come in ogni segreto, il tesoro non è ciò che viene nascosto, ma le curve visibili, le erte difese, i corridoi incerti. È il labirinto che fa il Minotauro: non il contrario”

Appearance in ancient philosophy is a term directly connected with opinion, because it is linked to the sensitive, subjective perception of phenomena, and thus is somehow opposed to the idea of truth or reality. In particular, Plato – who overlays the two terms, considering the fact that an opinion stimulated by appearance constitutes the first step towards the truth – uses the myth of the cave to alert us to the risk of being deceived by shadows, and how easily they can be mistaken for the reality of universal concepts. In fact, appearance is in any case a fundamental category of the system of social relations, the center of gravity between inside and outside, between being and having, between body and soul.

“So may the outward shows be least themselves /The world is still deceived with ornament.”, we read in Shakespeare2 ; “Appearances can be revealing”, or, clothes make the man, reads the subtitle of Adolf Loos’ book on the aesthetics of dress3; “If you want to know everything about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings and me: I’m right there”. Positions that are diametrically opposed, but in some ways also intrinsically linked, each in its own way reflecting on the ambiguity of appearances, on the equivocalness of perception, on the power of the ornamental object and its contribution to the subjectivization of the exterior aspect.

The ornament, in comparison with the “other,” becomes a paralanguage, or a non-codified system of expression that automatically triggers a series of unpredictable relationships (and reactions) between the self and the world.

Jewelry, an instrument of the ritual of appearance, fits squarely into the category of elements that satisfy the aesthetic and communicative impulse of the human being, and his or her need to leave a “modeled” imprint on the surface of the world, telling his or her story by displaying symbolic forms.

In the case of Manfred Bischoff, this natural predisposition is further complicated. His jewels not only impose themselves as signs that stimulate this process of identification, but they also demand active participation, establishing an equal, dual object-man relationship based on empathy and complicity. Like the daimon - a physical manifestation of man’s deepest consciousness, often embodied as an animal -, Bischoff’s jewels are the visible expression of the souls of their possessors, little individual taboos, on view but inviolable.

Anyone who chooses to wear Bischoff’s jewels makes a sort of pact with them, accepting a challenge that will be fully recompensed by the pleasure of being the guardian of an intimate revelation and the bearer of a subtle, portable provocation. But he or she must be able to stubbornly flaunt not only the object – indisputably attractive in and of itself -, but also the sibylline rebus that underlies it, and sardonically, ironically carry on the game of relations/reactions/misunderstandings that will inevitably be instigated in the encounter between the little sculptural miracle and the interlocutor of the moment.

In fact, a qui pro quo generated by the ambiguous possible lexical, metrical and visual overlays and interlacings of words is what makes Bischoff’s imagery gradually take shape in pure gold, pink coral and precious gems.

The exit is at the entrance. Like word puzzles, the titles of his pieces are graphemes through which the “wearer/player” can discover the image embodied by the jewelry. But, in line with a strategy of continuous rebounds and red herrings between word and image aimed at striking “the empty and strategic heart of things” 4, the jewelry, once separated from the text, becomes a rebus in turn, to be decrypted via the title. Hence these “gold pieces” come to be called Freud or Foucault or Warhol – not to indicate any resemblance, but as antonomastic: as a verse symbolically gives a title, so the hand instinctively forges.

The whole operation is thus based on compensation, and on the complicity between writing and figuration, and the osmosis between the private dimension and the public sphere, generating a series of puzzles arranged along an ever-shifting horizon line between serious and facetious, between citation and double entendre, between interiority and exteriority, constantly indicating new conduits to access the work. “Language entirely operates within ambiguity, and most of the time you know absolutely nothing about what you are saying.” (Jaques Lacan)

A poetics of allusion, of illusion and of randomness, a vocation for free, autarchic action practiced by an omnivorous, democratic spirit – in some ways guided by behavioral reminiscences rooted in pop – that collects “images trouvées” from different times and places – past, present, art, life - indistinctly. To shield his iconographic spoils from the volatility of gazes and the transcendence of memory, Bischoff gives every image a card, and then to grant them immanence, baptizes them in gold, giving them back to the world in the form of mounted, eloquent, graceful beauty.

These images recount isolated episodes from stories built on a lexicon contaminated by different “literary” genres (epic, popular, satirical, mythological, licentious); their protagonists belong to an expanded universe that comprises all of reality (historical, artistic, autobiographical, domestic, mnemonic, dreamlike, scientific).

But, even as they develop a nomadic narrative style that intentionally rejects a set thematic physiognomy,

Manfred Bischoff’s works present a strongly associative esthetic register of little asymmetries, slight disproportions, eccentric perspectives, teetering funambulism, superficial finishes and warm, epithelial tones.

This peculiarity, combined with an inborn talent for manipulating gold plates as if they were sheets of paper, distracts us from the actual intrinsic value of the material, shifting our attention and attraction to the virtuosity of the form rather than the carats of the jewelry.

For those who manage to come to terms with this liaison, Bischoff’s work reveals itself to be an epiphany that opens up, one by one, pathways to the significance of the images, the sarcasm of their associations and the discursive harmonic construction that underlies them, and creates a highly personal emotional-intellectual experience, and a wondrous representation of meaning. Anyone who grasps this meaning will tend to hide it away like a treasure, taking pleasure in showing off the superficial evidence of its presumed existence (the piece of jewelry, a perpetual snare) because “as with every secret, the treasure it not that which is hidden, but the visible curves, the defended slopes, the uncertain corridors. It is the labyrinth that makes the Minotaur, not the contrary”6 .
