I AM L ATE BECAUSE/99 LUF TBALOONS Task 1

BRIEF 1A I am late because »» Using post-it-notes, have a vast array of concepts, ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime, about why you were late. BRIEF 1B 99 Luftbaloons »» Using post-it-notes, imagitively come up with ways to rescue the baloon. MANDATORIES

2

»» Photographs of post-its. E VALUATION A good challenge as this task was mainly focused on coming up with different ways to generate ideas, which I found rather enjoyable. BLOG LINK http://sunset17.com

MAPPING AND DATA INFORMATION Task 2

BRIEF »» Develop graphical methods for mapping and describing the information you collect about the UWL campus food and drink choices. »» Visualise your ideas and Identify at least three different options that could be developed further on an individual basis. »» Individually develop your preferred concept and use appropriate software to develop an outcome. MANDATORIES

4

»» Create an artefact that documents your concepts as they develop that is appropriate for the task theme and your outcomes. E VALUATION I first wanted to show the frequency of customers going from one coffee establishment to the next. I did this by showing the size of the foot prints to each coffee shop, the more people using the establishment the bigger the foot prints leading to the shop. I then wanted to play with the colours in the infographic posters. I used the black and brown shades of colour to mimic the colour of the coffee. BLOG LINK http://sunset17.com

MAPPING AND DATA INFORMATION Task 2 E xtension BRIEF »» Identify and research some data or information of your choice. This may be mundane or serious. »» Decide on an appropriate format e.g. poster, postcard, screen-based graphic for your output. MANDATORIES »» Develop and design a mapping/data/information response to your subject. E VALUATION I wanted to do something that I had a personal affiliation with, which was the preservation of endangered animals and sea creatures. I decided to focus my attention on the wild cats of Africa. I kept the concept very simple by placing seven statistical facts on the infographic, I then placed the lion in the centre, with the map of Africa in the background. DÉRIVE Task 3

BRIEF »» Collect and record data. »» Your output can be something derived and completed from this work, but you may wish to undertake your own dérive elsewhere and use new findings. MANDATORIES »» Create a piece of graphic design work based on your dérive in an appropriate format. E VALUTATION The point of the exercise was to make full use of the London transport system and to travel by walking from one destination to the next, it came to a point in the evening when I became tired that the lecturer then told us as a group to meet in the pub, called the Dove. I chose to use an icon of the dove in the infographic as reference to a place where we met up to relax. I did enjoy the view from inside the pub which had an open plan outdoor view of the Thames river. BLOG LINK http://sunset17.com/concept-development-semester-1-ben/task-3-ben/

CONDITIONAL DESIGN Task 4

BRIEF »» Explore rules-based design techniques by first playing games from the Conditional Design Workbook. Then invent your own rules-based creative process. MANDATORIES »» In small groups select two Conditional Design games to play. Play them several times and record the process through video/time lapse imagery or individual photographs. E VALUATION

16

I found the game a bit complicated more than fun, it was the fact that it was based on accuracy and felt too constraint and there was no fun factor to the participation of it. BLOG LINK http://sunset17.com

NAME OF THE GAME Fill in the squares PL AYERS Four AIM OF THE GAME

18

The game starts on an A4 sheet of paper, each person going clockwise must use their felt-tip pens to draw a square. Upon drawing squares and filling up the paper if there is no where left to draw, the player must start to fill in a square of pre-existing ones, this can be from any square. However, the rules of the game for each player is that they must not touch the existing square in any way with their felt-tip pen, or if the player does so he/she is out of the game, last person drawing is the winner. RULES OF THE GAME »» Must have four players »» A4 paper »» Must have four different felt-tip colours »» Must not touch the corners of pre-existing squares E VALUATION This game was very enjoyable, I found it extremely funny watching each player trying to position their wrist to enable them to create a smaller square inside a bigger one, please note, there is no rule that says you cannot move the paper in any position that you like to enable you to draw the square. Also each player can choose as many different colour felt-tips as they like as long as the square has been completed in the same colour felt-tip. BLOG LINK http://sunset17.com

SELF INITIATIVE Task 5

BRIEF Brand yourself. Create a series of photographic advertising posters for a new agency. MANDATORIES Create a series of advertising posters for your very own advertising agency. E VALUATION I really like working with shadows from photographs and my brief was to see how it would look when adding colour to the photographs. The art cover was my first try at bringing myself out as a graphic designer, I could easily see these photographs for a book cover which I thought was creative.

22

I really was interested in the concept of using shadow and photography to build my self-initiated task, I started by taking a photo then outlining it on Illustrator, then I inserted the silhouette giving it colour. Using the colours I liked, this experiment came out a lot better than I imagined. The silhouette had an established feel about, especially when viewed from a poster or billboard. I have chosen to use a picture of me in different formats and images. BLOG LINK http://sunset17.com

OUTCOMES Poster series Nº2 and Nº3

The first colours used was a contrast of bright purple and dark purple, this mixture of purple emanated a wonderful mystical quality of the look and feel about it, the purple colour gives a soft yet mysterious ambience and hue.

I then used a darker mix of light and dark blue colours, the silhouette resembles a record sleeve cover, the dark blue added a more exciting vibe to the silhouette, the blue amplified and enhanced the shadow giving an impression of “what’s next” to the whole silhouette. It had a storytelling factor that came with the dark blue and the silhouette, this could be used in advertising.

23

OUTCOMES Poster series Nº 4 and 5

24

I then used a light sky blue colour this was nice and the feel and look shined a more together and professional feel to the silhouette, the white background gave a less strong effect and made the silhouette seem more safe and preserved.

I then used a warm grey colour to see how this would look and feel, this silhouette had a still feel to it, like something captured in time, the silhouette looked like it could be used in a poster or on a t-shirt. The silhouette had a grainy old feel like watching a black and white movie.

OUTCOMES Poster series Nº 6 and 7

25 I thought that the colour sequence with the black and grey worked well it gives the image a strong shadow. Not using any white in this image makes the image have a more photographic feel to the image which I find very interesting. The more I play with shadows is the more I see the detail in some of the artworks that give ninety percent of their focus and attention to the uses of shadows and lights.

I then used a darker shade of purple to see how the shadow would look when allowing the natural setting of the white background to do its job, this gave the shadow a more action feel, superimposing the strong look of the form of the person, making it more animated and real.

MOCKUPS Poster series Nº 1 and 2

26

I got a lot of pleasure seeing this purple on the billboard this image just wants to be about something, it gave me a sense of wanting to write a story about the image to express the meaning behind the image. It’s becoming more fun the more I experiment with different concepts and ideas.

When using the sky blue this image is still appealing to look at, playing with the white background then putting in the blue colour was interesting. I got a lot of pleasure seeing this blue on the billboard, this image gave me a sense of wanting to write a story about the image to express the meaning behind the image. It became more fun the more I experimented with different concepts and ideas of using this silhouette.

The strong colour of the black with the grey works well together.

IDEA DEVELOPMENTS Deciding colours and placements BRIEF A collection of images of lions in different colours. MANDATORIES Cover statistical information about the lion. E VALUATION This was one of the most enjoyable tasks for me. My passion and strong dedication to the preservation of wild animals and sea creatures is my driving force behind this work. I will be working on different animals and visualising alot more clarity to my future work. I am looking forward to creating any ideas and concepts that can be used to safeguard any of these beautiful endangered creatures.
