Elles possèdent un charme indicible ces miniatures qui ont joué un roˆle important du XVIe au XIXe. Elles ont été des symboles d'affection, des gages d'amour, des souvenirs ineffaçables jusqu'au jour où la photographie a fait son apparition pour finalement causer leur perte. Aujourd'hui, elles sont très loin de valoir ce qu'elles couˆtaient vers 1900 lorsque des gens aisés comme MM. Panhard ou Pierpont Morgan en achetaient à prix d'or. Il est donc temps de les remettre au gouˆt du jour afin qu'elles méritent plus d'attention de la part des amateurs d'art et qu'elles ne soient plus seulement considérées comme de ravissantes petites choses qu'on classe induˆment parmi les objets de vitrine.

Il a suffi d'une vingtaine d'années, le laps de temps nécessaire à la photographie pour devenir populaire, pour que l'art de la miniature soit relégué aux oubliettes. Progressivement, ses artistes ont fini par disparaître si bien qu'à partir de la fin du XIXe siècle, ceux qui l'ont perpétué n'étaient plus dans leur majorité que des copistes et bien souvent les pâles imitateurs de maîtres qui les avaient précédés et qui s'étaient montrés aussi talentueux que les plus grands peintres de leur époque.

Il est facile de comprendre à quel point la photographie a représenté un phénomène considérable dans la vie des gens durant la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle et pourquoi son succès a naturellement entraîné le naufrage d'un art qui avait tenu trois

siècles durant une place prépondérante dans les hautes sphères de la société européenne. Destinée aux rois au départ, la miniature a ensuite été récupérée par la noblesse avant d'attirer la bourgeoisie à partir de 1770. Elle a été gage d'amour et symbole de réussite et ses meilleurs artistes bénéficièrent d'une renommée qui leur assurèrent en retour une aisance matérielle que beaucoup de grands peintres n'eurent pas.

L'histoire du portrait en miniature commence vraiment avec Jean Clouet et Hans Holbein, deux maîtres importants du début du XVIe siècle, d'ailleurs plus peintres que miniaturistes.

D'emblée, ils réalisèrent de merveilleux chefs d'œuvre qui firent date dans l'histoire de cet art et ce, à un tel degré que ceux qui leur succédèrent furent rarement en mesure de les surpasser.

Une origine floue Méconnu, l'art de la miniature a été confronté à une longue suite de contradictions et de malentendus. D'abord, on ne pourrait expliquer avec certitude l'origine du mot. Pour beaucoup, il dériverait de minium qui désignait la couleur rouge utilisée pour enluminer les manuscrits. Toutefois, cette assertion semble plutoˆt fantaisiste parce que le rouge n'était pas la couleur la plus utilisée pour les enluminures.

Enluminure rime d'ailleurs avec miniature et c'est peut-être là qu'il faut rechercher l'origine du mot, surtout que limner (enlumineur en anglais) fut le nom qui était donné aux miniaturistes de la cour de Henri VIII et d'Élisabeth 1ere en Angleterre et le meilleur exemple est celui rapporté par Nicholas

Hilliard, principal suiveur de Holbein, qui publia vers 1600 un ouvrage intitulé : «The Art of Limning» (l'Art de la Miniature).

Une troisième hypothèse a cependant été formulée, celle de l'association du mot latin « minus » (plus petit) avec miniature qui est de la peinture en réduction. A ce problème d'étymologie s'ajoute le fait que la miniature et la peinture n'ont jamais fait bon ménage alors que rien n'aurait duˆ les opposer.

Au XVIe siècle, la miniature sert d'abord les souverains, non pas dans un but artistique mais plutoˆt comme moyen original d'illustration de lettres officielles. C'est ainsi que divers documents signés par Henri VIII vers 1520 sont illustrés de son portrait, un peu à la manière de livres d'Heures enrichis d'enluminures.

Dans ce contexte, on imagine fort bien que la miniature est un dérivé de l'enluminure et qu'à l'illustration du sacré s'est ensuite substituée, dans un autre usage, celle du portrait.

On connaît ces fabuleux livres d'Heures, agrémentés de scènes peintes par de très grands artistes, ces enlumineurs ou « limners » qui ont été les précurseurs des grands miniaturistes du XVIe siècle. On pense notamment à Jean Fouquet qui, au sacré, a ajouté l'éloge de la chevalerie.

C'est certainement à partir de là que la miniature a commencé par se singulariser, principalement avec Jean Clouet, peintre de François 1er, qui, tout en restant très proche des artistes de la fin du Moyen-Age, annonce un nouveau style, plus perceptible dans ses magnifiques dessins et que Holbein, dans son sillage, portera au niveau le plus élevé avec ses miniatures réalisées à partir de 1535 pour le compte de Henri VIII et de son entourage.

DOSSIER Holbein, l'incomparable Holbein reçut vraisemblablement l'enseignement de Lucas Horenbout (ou Hornebolt), un artiste flamand venu en Angleterre juste avant 1520 et qui fut le premier miniaturiste de la Cour. Horenbout fut probablement l'auteur de certains portraits du roi sur ces documents officiels signés de la main du monarque. Ces portraits ne sont guère exceptionnels au niveau de la qualité mais ont le mérite d'avoir tracé la voie à cet art que Holbein sut magnifier avec un talent hors pair.

Les portraits réalisés par Holbein sont extraordinaires de vie et de vérité et dégagent quelque chose de magique qu'aucun de ses successeurs ne put exprimer avec autant de force. Ce fut donc à partir de 1535 que l'art de la peinture à la gouache sur parchemin prit forme, quand Henri VIII se servit de Holbein pour notamment envoyer son portrait en miniature à divers cours d'Europe et principalement dans sa quête d'une nouvelle épouse.

L'entourage du monarque anglais, impressionné ne manqua pas de se faire « portraicturer » (comme on disait alors) mais la mort prématurée de Holbein à la suite d'une épidémie de peste en 1543, apporta un frein à l'art de la miniature. Ce ne fut qu'une vingtaine d'années plus tard que l'essor de cet art devint effectif avec François Clouet en France et Nicholas Hilliard en Angleterre. Le premier nommé préféra se consacrer plus au dessin (le musée de Chantilly en possède une série magnifique) et à la peinture sur toile et ne prêta donc qu'une attention limitée à la miniature et c'est là bien dommage parce

que celles qu'il réalisa sont superbes tandis que le second, orfèvre de métier, perpétua la tradition lancée par Holbein sans toutefois l'égaler.

Hilliard l'orfèvre sera à la base du développement de l'école anglaise qui s'imposa tout au long du XVII e siècle et pratiquement jusqu'en 1720 lorsque l'école allemande montra le bout de son nez et que l'école française sortit enfin de son cocon pour contester durement cette hégémonie des insulaires.

Il reste que les peintres et leurs académies snobèrent quelque peu la miniature en la considérant comme un art mineur ou comme un « art de bonbonnière » au XVIIIe siècle tant et si bien que les miniaturistes formèrent une caste à part jusqu'au bout.

Pourtant, ces artistes étaient avant tout des peintres, souvent très talentueux, pour mettre un maximum de ressemblance et de vie sur vélin, carton, papier, ivoire (à partir de 1720) ou cuivre, quoique les puristes n'acceptent pas de classer les petits portraits peints à l'huile sur ce support parmi les miniatures.

La miniature resta donc un art bien particulier, à tel point que les conservateurs de musées, jusqu'à la fin du XIXe siècle, se soucièrent peu d'en acheter ou d'en exposer. Il fallut une exposition à Londres en 1865 puis une autre dans cette même ville 24 ans plus tard pour qu'enfin un intérêt se manifestât pour cet art. La publication de livres et l'organisation d'autres expositions en Europe jusqu'en 1914 contribuèrent à faire sortir les miniatures de l'oubli. Heureusement, des gens aisés comme MM. Pierpont Morgan, Panhard et David-Weill se constituèrent de belles collections, déboursant à l'occasion des sommes folles qui laisseraient pantois les amateurs d'aujourd'hui.

Toutefois, le regain d'intérêt pour la miniature est resté limité, à cause des guerres mondiales et aussi en raison de ces vieilles convictions et de ces clichés déformés concernant cet art qui ont fait que le contingent des collectionneurs soit demeuré si restreint. Ces collectionneurs eux-mêmes, dans leur majorité , ont jalousement veillé à ne pas voir leur nombre augmenter afin de se partager au mieux les miniatures mises sur le marché, tant et si bien que leur moyenne d'âge dépasse allègrement 50 ans et que leur race risque d'être menacée d'extinction. En fait, la logique voudrait que leur nombre augmente afin de donner un nouvel élan à ce domaine qui mérite d'être apprécié à sa juste valeur.

Née avec la Renaissance, morte avec l'éclosion de l'ère industrielle, la miniature aura quand même connu des années fastes, notamment à partir de 1780 lorsqu'elle intéressa la bourgeoisie. Paradoxalement, elle fit d'avance le lit de la photographie lorsque les gens demandèrent aux artistes de faire plusieurs versions du portrait de l'être cher ou d'euxmêmes et on comprend alors pourquoi la photographie, fidèle à 100% au niveau de la ressemblance, et surtout rapide, multipliable à souhait et peu couˆteuse, devint si vite populaire lorsqu'il s'agissait de faire exécuter un portrait.

Un XVIe siècle éclatant Revenons en arrière, au moment où François Clouet et Hilliard, rivalisant de talent, le premier dans le rendu des expressions, le second dans la façon de peindre les habits et les dentelles tout en donnant une pointe de romantisme à ses oeuvres, créèrent enfin les conditions dans lesquelles la miniature allait s'épanouir.

A cette époque, la France marqua un temps de retard par rapport à l'Angleterre. Hormis Jean Clouet et son fils François, peu d'artistes firent des miniatures dans ce pays jusqu'en 1600.

Des portraits ont cependant été retrouvés sur lesquels il est malgré tout difficile de mettre un nom d'auteur. D'autre part, en France plus qu'ailleurs, de nombreux peintres produisirent des miniatures à l'huile sur cuivre que les spécialistes classent plutoˆt dans le domaine de la peinture.

C'est en Angleterre, pays des libertés et des inventions, que la miniature trouva le terrain favorable à son expansion, d'abord avec l'arrivée d'artistes flamands, comme Simon Benninck, sa fille Lavina Teerlink ou Lucas Horenbout, le premier et le troisième auteurs de ces portraits de Henri VIII figurant sur divers documents officiels, puis avec Holbein qui créa un choc majeur en peignant ces portraits si réalistes.

Hilliard apporté un coˆté précieux à la miniature, Rowland Lockey également mais à un degré moindre, tandis que d'autres artistes comme John Bettes ou John Shute, spécialistes des grands portraits à l'huile, s'y essayèrent sans plus.

Hilliard s'inspira très largement de Holbein dont les oeuvres étaient conservées à la cour. Tout en exécutant de très belles pièces d'orfèvrerie, cet artiste, originaire d'Exeter, s'améliora au fil des ans en apportant une touche divinement romantique à ses oeuvres, notamment en donnant une attitude langoureuse à certains des personnages qu'il peignit et en mettant sur le pourtour des inscriptions stylisées, peintes à l'or sur des fonds bleus.

La préciosité de Hilliard fut quelque peu imitée par ses suivants, principalement son fils Laurence qui ne l'égala pas, Isaac Oliver, dont la famille était originaire de Rouen, qui le surpassa et Edward Norgate, un artiste de grand talent dont les oeuvres sont cependant rares.

L'âge d'or de la miniature démarra ainsi de belle manière avec ces artistes anglais de la cour d'Elisabeth et de James 1er et se perpétua encore avec autant d'éclat au XVIIe siècle, une période qui vit éclore d'autres miniaturistes extrêmement doués. Et pourtant, la miniature fut encore loin d'entamer sa révolution, les artistes se limitant à peindre à la gouache sur vélin, un support intéressant certes, mais loin d'avoir les qualités de l'ivoire, utilisé que vers 1720 et plus largement à partir de 1740.

A finom kézzel festett miniatûr képek a tizenhatodik és tizenkilencedik század között jelentôs szerepet töltöttek be. Az apró képeket a szeretet jeleként, szerelmi zálogként és maradandó szuvenírként ajándékozták egészen a fotográfia megjelenéséig, mely idôvel teljesen kisajátította szerepét. Értékük manapság meg sem közelíti az

1900-as évek körüli árukat, amikor olyan jómódú emberek, mint Panhard vagy Pierpont Morgan csillagászati összegeket fizettek értük. Itt az ideje tehát, hogy a mûvészet kedvelôi felújítsák érdeklôdésüket ezek iránt a miniatúrák iránt, és a méltatlanul a vitrinekbe számûzött csecsebecsék értékes gyûjteményekké váljanak.

Mindössze húsz év alatt, mialatt a fotográfia új médiuma széleskörû népszerûségre tett szert, a miniatúrafestészet mûvészete eltünt a történelem süllyesztôjében. A miniatúrafestôk lassanként oly mértékben eltüntek a színrôl, hogy a tizenkilencedik század végére azok többsége, akik még mindig e mûvészeti formát gyakorolták, már csak másolással foglalkozott, sápadt imitációit produkálva az elôttük járó mesterek képeinek, akik saját koruk legnagyobb festôivel voltak egyenrangúak.

Könnyû megérteni, miféle lélegzetelállító újdonságot jelentett a fotográfia az emberek életében a tizenkilencedik század második felében, és hogy sikere miért taszított szükségszerûen a feledés homályába egy olyan mûvészeti formát, amely három évszázadon keresztül jelentôs szerepet töltött be az európai társadalom magasabb régióiban. Az eredetileg a királyok számára készített miniatúrák hamarosan utat találtak a nemesség, majd az 1770-es évektôl a polgárság köreibe is. A miniatúra a szerelem jele és a siker szimbóluma volt, és legjobb mûvelôi olyan ismertségre és anyagi bôségre tettek szert, amelyet gyakran a legnagyobb festôk sem élveztek.

A miniatûr portré története valójában Jean Clouet és Hans Holbein neveivel kezdôdik. Ez a két jelentôs, kora tizenhatodik századi mester sokkal inkább festô, mint miniatúrakészítô volt, s a kezdetektôl fogva olyan remekmûveket alkottak, amelyek

szinte felülmúlhatatlan mérföldköveknek számítanak a mûvészet történetében.

Homályos kezdetek Az eleinte nem sokra becsült miniatúráknak az ellentmondások és félreértések hosszú sorával kellett megküzdenie. Elôször is senki sem tudta teljes bizonyossággal megmagyarázni a név eredetét. Sokak szerint a „minium” szóból származott az illuminált kódexek készítéséhez használt vörös festék (vermilion) után. Ez az érvelés azonban valószerûtlennek tûnik, hiszen a vörös a kódexek illusztrációin korántsem tartozott a leggyakrabban használt színek közé.

Mellesleg egy másik, valószínûbb kapcsolat is található az illumináció és a miniatúrafestészet között. VIII. Henrik és I. Erzsébet udvarában a „limning” (v. „illuminating”) angol szavakkal jelölték a miniatúrákat. E használat legeklatánsabb példáját Nicholas Hilliard, a Holbein után legjelentôsebb miniaturista jegyezte fel 1600 körül publikált „The Art of Limning” címû mûvében.

Egy harmadik hipotézis szerint a „miniatúra”, vagyis „kis festészet” a latin „minus” („kisebb”) szóval hozható összefüggésbe. Az etimológiai nehézségeket tovább bonyolítja az a tény, hogy a miniatúra és a festészet mûvészete sohasem jöttek ki jól egymással, jóllehet egymás iránti kölcsönös bizalmatlanságukra nincs kézenfekvô magyarázat.

A tizenhatodik század során a miniatúrák elsôsorban az uralkodókat szolgálták, nem annyira mûvészi céllal, mintsem hivatalos levelezésük egyfajta illusztrációjaként. A VIII. Henrik által 1520

körül aláírt dokumentumok mindegyikét – némileg a breviáriumokat díszítô illuminációkra emlékeztetô módon – saját portréja illusztrálja.

Ebben a kontextusban nem nehéz elképzelni, hogy a miniatúra valóban az illuminációból származott, és a szent szövegek illusztrálása után újabb szerepet kapott: portré lett belôle.

Számos jól ismert breviárium létezik, melyet a legnagyobb mûvészek által festett páratlan jelenetek díszítenek. Ezek az illuminátorok a tizenhatodik század nagy miniatûrfestôinek elôfutárai. Közülük is különösen Jean Fouquet neve érdemel említést, akinek tematikája a szent témák mellett a lovagság ünneplését is magában foglalta.

Kétség kívül ez az a pont, amelytôl a miniatúra kezd elismertté válni, elsôsorban Jean Clouet, I. Ferenc udvari festôje révén, aki bár nem távolodott el a késô középkor mûvészeitôl, új stílust teremtett, mely elsôsorban csodálatos rajzain érhetô tetten, s amelyet az ôt követô Holbein a legmagasabb szintre emelt a VIII. Henrik és udvarának megrendelésére 1535-tôl festett miniatúrák révén.

A páratlan Holbein Holbein mestere valószínûleg Lucas Horenbout (vagy Hornebolt), egy flamand mûvész lehetett, aki az elsô udvari miniatüristaként nem sokkal 1520 elôtt érkezett Angliába. Vélhetôleg részben Horenbout festette azokat a királyportrékat is, amelyek az uralkodó aláírását viselô hivatalos dokumentumokon láthatók. Bár ezek az arcképek minôségüket tekintve aligha tekinthetôk különlegesnek, feltétlen erényük, hogy utat törtek egy olyan mûvészeti

zsáner számára, amelyet Holbein páratlan tökélyre fejlesztett.

A Holbein által festett portrék minden képzeletet felülmúló élettel és igazságtartalommal telítôdtek, varázslatos kisugárzásukhoz foghatót egyetlen követôje sem tudott alkotni. Így a pergamenre történô guásfestés mûvészete 1535-tôl kezdett kialakulni, amikor VIII. Henrik szolgálatába fogadta Holbeint azzal a kifejezett céllal, hogy miniatûr képmását különféle Európai udvarokba küldje, elsôsorban új feleség keresése céljából.

Az angol uralkodó udvarának szintén imponáltak a képek, és hamarosan saját portréikat is megrendelték, bár Holbein korai halála az 1543-as pestisjárványt követôen lelassította a miniatúrafestészet mûvészetének fejlôdését. Újabb húsz évnek kellett eltelnie, mire a zsáner végérvényesen meghonosodott elsôsorban François Clouet franciaországi és Nicholas Hilliard angliai munkásságának köszönhetôen. Az elôbbi mindenek elôtt a rajzolásnak (Chantilly múzeum kiváló gyûjteménnyel rendelkezik grafikai munkáiból) valamint a vászonfestészetnek szentelte idejét, a miniatúrákra csak korlátozott energiákat fordított – ami nagy kár, hiszen e téren is remek munkákat alkotott. Az utóbbi, eredeti szakmája szerint aranymûves, tovább folytatta a Holbein által megkezdett hagyományt, ám nem sikerült elôdjéhez fogható remekmûveket alkotnia.

Az aranymûves Hilliard alapította meg azt az angol iskolát, amely a tizenhetedik század során dominanciára tett szert, és gyakorlatilag 1720-ig – amikor a német iskola elôször mutatta meg arcát és a francia iskola is végre kikelt bábállapotából, komoly kihívás intézve az angolok által élvezett hegemónia ellen – egyeduralkodónak volt tekinthetô.

Ennek ellenére a festôk és akadémiáik némileg sznob módon tekintettek a miniatúrára, a mûvészet alacsonyabb rendû ágának, a tizennyolcadik században pedig kifejezetten „csokoládédoboz-festészetnek” tekintve azt. A miniatúrafestôk így külön kasztot alkottak egészen a mûfaj végsô hanyatlásáig.

A miniatúrafestôk ennek ellenére – gyakran igen tehetséges – valódi festôk voltak, akik a legnagyobb életszerûséget és hasonlóságot hozták létre pergamenen, papíron és (1720-tól) elefántcsonton vagy rézen, jóllehet a puristák az utóbbi felületre festett apró portrékat nem hajlandók miniatúraként kezelni.

A miniatúrafestészet oly mértékben elszigetelt mûvészeti ág maradt, hogy a múzeumi kurátorok egészen a tizenkilencedik század végéig alig mutattak érdeklôdést vásárlásuk vagy kiállításuk iránt. Az elsô, 1865-ben rendezett londoni kiállítást követôen 24 évnek kellett eltelnie, mire ugyanott sor került a következôre, és a század végére valódi érdeklôdés mutatkozott a mûfaj iránt. Különféle publikációk megjelenése, majd egészen 1914-ig a további európai kiállítások hatékonyan segítették elô a miniatúra kitörését a feledés homályából. Szerencsére olyan tehetôs emberek, mint Pierpont Morgan, Panhard és David-Weill jelentôs gyûjteményekre tettek szert, igaz az ezekért kiadott csillagászati összegektôl a mai mûvészetbarátoknak leesne az álluk.

A miniatúrák iránt megnyilvánuló érdeklôdés mindazonáltal korlátozott maradt, ami részben a két világháború számlájára írható, részben azoknak a makacs nézeteknek és torz közhelyeknek tudható be, amelyek korlátozták a gyûjtôk számát. E gyûjtôk többsége maga is féltékenyen vigyázott arra, hogy szá-

muk ne növekedjen, s könnyebben férjenek hozzá a piacon megjelenô miniatúrákhoz. Ez irányú erôfeszítéseik olyan sikerrel jártak, hogy átlag életkoruk ma már jóval az 50 év fölött jár, és fajukat a kihalás veszélye fenyegeti. Pedig a józan ész éppen számuk növekedését sugallná, hogy ez a nagyobb figyelmet és elismerést érdemlô mûfaj friss mûértôkkel gazdagodjon.

A reneszánsz idején fogant és az iparosodás korának hajnalán kimúlt miniatûr festészetnek az 1780-as évektôl egy rövid virágkor is megadatott, amikor felkeltette a polgárság érdeklôdését.

Paradox módon ez a fénykor épp a fotográfia útját egyengette, hiszen a vásárlók egyre gyakrabban követelték a mûvészektôl, hogy a szeretett személy vagy sajátmaguk portréját több példányban fessék meg. Mindezt figyelembe véve könnyû megérteni, hogy a 100 százalékig élethô, korlátlanul sokszorosítható, olcsó és mindenek elôtt gyors fotográfia miért tett szert oly gyors népszerûségre a portréábrázolás terén.

A tizenhatodik század pompája Forduljunk most vissza abba a pillanatba, amikor François Clouet és Hilliard, ez a két rivális tehetség (az elôbbi az arckifejezések megragadásában, az utóbbi az öltözetek és csipke ábrázolásában alkotott maradandót), miközben képeiket egy csipetnyi romanticizmussal töltik meg, megteremtik azokat a körülményeket, amelyek között a miniatûrfestészet virágzani kezd.

Ekkoriban Franciaország némileg Anglia mögött járt. Jean Clouettôl és fiától François-tól eltekintve, 1600 elôtt kevés mûvész festetett miniatûröket Franciaországban. Ennek ellenére több olyan portrét találtak, amelyet a mai napig nehéz egyetlen fes-

tônek tulajdonítani. Mellesleg Franciaországban sokan festettek rézre olajjal miniatûr képeket, s ezeket a mai mûvészettörténészek gyakran a hagyományos festmények közé sorolják.

Angliában, a szabadság és találmányok hazájában, a miniatûrfestészet elsôsorban olyan flamand mûvészek révén talált termékeny talajra, mint Simon Benninck és lánya, Lavina Teerlink vagy Lucas Horenbout, akik közül az elsô és a harmadik felelôs VIII. Henrik azon képmásaiért, amelyek különféle hivatalos dokumentumokon megjelennek. ôket követte Holbein, aki képeinek realizmusával oly mélyrôl jövô csodálatot váltott ki.

The history of the portrait miniature

These exquisite miniatures played an important role from the sixteenth century to the nineteenth. They were given as signs of affection, as love tokens and enduring keepsakes right up until the advent of photography, which eventually usurped their place. Today, they are worth nothing like what they could fetch in around 1900, when wealthy people such as Panhard or Pierpont Morgan bought them for astronomical prices. The time has indeed come, therefore, to revive the interest of art lovers in these miniatures, turning them into desirable collectables rather than merely charming objects unfairly relegated to the display case.

In just twenty years, the time it took for the new medium of photography to achieve widespread popularity, the art of miniature painting had become obsolete. Little by little, miniaturists disappeared from the scene, so completely that by the end of the nineteenth century, the majority of those who still practised the art were merely copyists, often producing no more than pale imitations of the masters who had gone before them and who had proved themselves just as talented as the greatest painters of their age.

It is easy to understand the extent to which photography represented an amazing phenomenon in people’s lives during the second half of the nineteenth century, and why its success inevitably pushed into oblivion an art which, for three centuries, had occupied such an important place in the higher spheres of European society. Initially intended for kings, the miniature was soon adopted by the nobility before attracting the interest of the bourgeoisie from 1770 onwards. The miniature was a token of love and a symbol of success, and the best practitioners earned a renown that guaranteed them, in return, greater material wealth than that enjoyed by many of the greatest painters.

Blurred beginnings Underrated as it was, the art of the miniature faced a long series of contradictions and misunderstandings. To begin with, no one could explain, with any certitude, the origins of the name.

According to many, it was derived from the word “minium”, the name of the red colour (vermilion) used in the creation of illuminated manuscripts. However, this claim seems somewhat unlikely, since red was not, in fact, the colour most used in illuminations.

Besides, there is a further link between illumination and miniature painting, and it is perhaps here that one should look for the origins of the word, particularly because “limning” (or “illuminating”) was the English word also used to describe the painting of miniatures in the courts of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The best example of its use is that recorded by Nicholas Hilliard, the most important miniaturist after Holbein, who, in around 1600, published the work “The Art of Limning”.

The history of the portrait miniature begins in earnest with Jean Clouet and Hans Holbein, two significant masters from the beginning of the sixteenth century, who were, in fact, more painters than miniaturists.

However, yet a third hypothesis has been proposed, derived from the association of the Latin word “minus” (“smaller”) with “miniature”, that is, a small painting. And alongside this etymological difficulty is the fact that the art of the miniature and painting have never got on well together, even though there is no apparent reason for their mutual distrust.

From the very beginning they produced wonderful masterpieces that represent a milestone in the history of the art, to such an extent that those who came afterwards would rarely be capable of surpassing them.

In the sixteenth century, miniatures were primarily in the service of sovereigns, not with any artistic goal but rather as an original way to illustrate official correspondence. A number of documents signed by Henry VIII in around 1520 are illustrated

with his portrait, resembling in some way the illuminations that adorn books of hours.

In this context, it is easy to imagine that the miniature is in fact derived from illumination, and that, following its use in the illustration of sacred texts, it took on another role: that of the portrait.

There are many well-known books of hours, fabulously embellished with scenes painted by the greatest artists, the illuminators, or “limners”, who were the precursors of the great miniaturists of the sixteenth century. One thinks particularly of Jean Fouquet, who expanded his repertoire to incorporate not just the sacred, but also the celebration of chivalry.

It is certainly from this point that the miniature began to achieve distinction, principally with Jean Clouet, court painter to François I, who, while remaining close to the artists of the end of the Middle Ages, heralded a new style, which is more perceptible in his magnificent drawings and which Holbein, in his wake, would raise to its highest level with the miniatures he produced from 1535 onwards at the behest of Henry VIII and his entourage.

are scarcely exceptional in terms of quality, but they have the merit of paving the way for an art that Holbein would glorify with his unparalleled skill.

The portraits executed by Holbein have extraordinary life and truth, and they radiate something magical that not one of his successors would be able to express with as much power. Thus it was from 1535 onwards that the art of gouache painting on parchment took shape, when Henry VIII employed Holbein, in particular to send his portrait miniature to various European courts, primarily in his search for a new wife.

Those in the English monarch’s entourage were impressed and were quick to have their own portraits painted, although Holbein’s early death following a plague epidemic in 1543 slowed down the development of the art of miniature painting. It was another twenty years before the art took off definitively, with François Clouet in France and Nicholas Hilliard in England. The former chose rather to dedicate himself to drawing (the Chantilly museum has a wonderful series of these drawings) and to painting on canvas, and only gave limited attention to miniatures––a great pity, since those that he did produce are superb.

The latter, a goldsmith by profession, continued the tradition established by Holbein without ever becoming his equal.

Peerless Holbein Holbein was probably taught by Lucas Horenbout (or Hornebolt), a Flemish artist who arrived in England a little before 1520 and who was the first court miniaturist. It was most likely Horenbout who painted certain portraits of the king that appear on official documents that bear the monarch’s signature. These portraits

The goldsmith Hilliard was the founder of the English school that was dominant throughout the seventeenth century and practically up until 1720, when the German school first showed its face and the French school at last emerged from its cocoon to pose a serious challenge to the hegemony enjoyed by the English.

were somewhat snobbish about the miniature, regarding it as a minor branch of art or as “chocolate-box painting” in the eighteenth century, to such an extent that miniaturists formed a caste apart right until the art of the miniature became obsolete.

has been their efficiency that their average age is now well above 50 and their species faces the threat of extinction. In fact, logic should have suggested an increase in their numbers, in order to give fresh impetus to this area of the arts that deserves much greater recognition and appreciation.

Nevertheless, miniaturists were, above all, painters, often extremely talented, who were able to impart a maximum of life and likeness onto the vellum, card, paper, ivory (from 1720 onwards) or copper, although purists refuse to classify the little portraits painted in oils on this latter surface as miniatures.

The miniature, therefore, remained a distinct art, to the extent that museum curators, right until the end of the nineteenth century, showed little interest in purchasing them or displaying them. It took an exhibition in London in 1865, then another in the same city 24 years later, before any real interest was shown in the art. The appearance of various publications and the organisation of further exhibitions in Europe up to 1914 helped to rescue the miniature from oblivion. Fortunately, wealthy people such as Pierpont Morgan, Panhard and David-Weill accumulated important collections, sometimes spending astronomical sums that would leave today’s art lovers astounded.

Born with the Renaissance, its death coinciding with the advent of the industrial age, the miniature was still to have its years of glory, particularly from 1780 onwards, when it captured the interest of the bourgeoisie. Paradoxically, it paved the way for photography, when people began to demand from artists several versions of the portrait of a loved one or of themselves.

With this in mind, it is easy to understand why photography, 100 per cent faithful in terms of likeness and above all fast, reproducible in as many copies as desired, and inexpensive, became popular so quickly in the production of portraits .

Nevertheless, the growth of interest in miniatures has remained limited, both as a result of the two world wars and also because of the long-held convictions and distorted clichés regarding this art, which meant that the number of collectors remained restricted. The majority of these collectors themselves jealously took care not to allow their numbers to increase, so as better to be able to share the miniatures that came on the market. Such

The splendour of the sixteenth century Let us turn back now, to the moment when François Clouet and Hilliard, with their rival talents––the former in the capturing of expressions, and the latter in the depicting of clothing and lace, while endowing his pictures with a touch of romanticism––at last created the conditions in which the miniature could flourish.

At this time, France lagged somewhat behind England. Apart from Jean Clouet and his son François, few artists were producing miniatures in France before 1600. Nevertheless, portraits have been discovered that are still difficult to attribute to a particular painter. Besides, in France more than elsewhere,

many painters produced miniatures using oils on copper, which specialists today rather classify as paintings.

It was in England, a country of freedoms and inventiveness, that the miniature found fertile ground for expansion, primarily with the arrival of Flemish artists like Simon Benninck, his daughter Lavina Teerlink, or Lucas Horenbout, the first and third being responsible for the portraits of Henry VIII that appear on various official documents, then with the appearance of Holbein, who caused such astonishment with the realism of his portraits.

Hilliard introduced a touch of the precious to the miniature, as did Rowland Lockey, although to a lesser degree, whereas other artists, like John Bettes or John Shute, who specialised in large portraits in oils, did no more than try their hand.

Hilliard was greatly inspired by Holbein, whose works were present at the court. While at the same time executing some beautiful pieces of work in gold, this artist, who came from Exeter, improved over the years, introducing a divinely romantic touch to his works, notably by painting certain of his subjects in a langorous pose and by adding stylised inscriptions around the edge, painted in gold on a blue background.

Hilliard’s preciousness was to some extent imitated by his successors, particularly by his son Laurence who failed to equal him, by Isaac Oliver, whose family came originally from Rouen and who surpassed him, and by Edward Norgate, a very talented artist whose works are, nevertheless, rare.

The golden age of the miniature was therefore launched with these English artists of the court of Elizabeth I and James I, and continued with undiminished splendour until the seventeenth century, a period that saw the flourishing of other extremely gifted miniaturists. However, the miniature was still a long way from initiating any kind of revolution, with artists restricting themselves to painting in gouache on vellum, an worthy surface of course, but far from having the qualities of ivory, which would only be used in around 1720, and more widely from 1740 onwards.

Lorsqu’un agent découvre les lieux d'un crime, il doit immédiatement demander qu’on lui prête assistance. Le premier agent sur les lieux d'un crime doit tenter par tous les moyens de préserver des vies en commençant à donner les premiers soins, tout en veillant simultanément à demander de l'aide pour prodiguer des soins de santé et assurer sa propre sécurité, celle des autres membres du personnel et celle des délinquants qui se trouvent sur les lieux ou qui pourraient se présenter sur les lieux. Après s’être occupé de la santé et de la sécurité des membres du personnel et des délinquants, l’agent doit controˆler l’accès aux lieux du crime jusqu’à ce qu’il soit relayé. Les lieux d’un crime constitue un endroit vulnérable et il faut faire très attention à ne pas contaminer ou détruire des éléments de preuve éventuels. À cette fin, les normes minimales suivantes doivent être respectées : prévenir tout dommage ou tout nouveau dommage, faire sortir les personnes qui ne sont pas impliquées, empêcher les personnes non autorisées d'accéder aux lieux du crime ou de contaminer des éléments de preuve, lorsqu’un membre du personnel n’ayant pas vraiment besoin de se trouver sur les lieux insiste pour y accéder, consigner son nom et le moment exact de sa présence, aux fins de la procédure judiciaire, tenir une liste précise du nom de toutes les personnes présentes sur les lieux du crime ainsi que du moment exact de leurs allées et venues, controˆler l'accès aux lieux du crime jusqu'à ce qu'un agent désigné ou la police prenne la relève, confirmer verbalement le remplacement en question et consigner dans le registre le nom et le rang de la personne qui prend la relève ainsi que l'heure de son arrivée. Les mesures suivantes doivent être prises en ce qui a trait aux éléments de preuve : éviter de déplacer quoi que ce soit, sauf s'il est absolument nécessaire de le faire, éviter, dans la mesure du possible, de contaminer les éléments de preuve, photographier les lieux si possible avant de déplacer quoi que ce soit, protéger les preuves matérielles des intempéries, enregistrer tous les éléments de preuve trouvés ou déplacés (en indiquant leur nature, ainsi que où, quand et par qui ils ont été trouvés ou déplacés), garder en sa possession les éléments de preuve saisis jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient confiés à la police ou placés en lieu suˆr, et en faire mention sur le bordereau ou le formulaire portant sur la chaîne de possession, éviter la contamination d'une preuve par une autre en gardant chaque élément de preuve séparé, isoler les témoins des autres témoins ainsi que des autres personnes, lorsque les lieux du crime comprennent un ordinateur et qu’aucune tentative de détruire les éléments de preuve électroniques n’a été observée, ne rien faire à l’appareil, mais en informer le personnel chargé de la gestion des systèmes d’ordinateurs, en présence d’indices révélant que l’on tente de détruire ou d’altérer des éléments de preuve électroniques (par exemple, le clignotement rapide du voyant lumineux de l’unité de disque dur), éteindre l’ordinateur le plus vite possible et le protéger de toute manipulation non autorisée etc. etc.

If an officer comes across the scene of a crime, he or she shall immediately call for assistance. The first officer on the scene shall make every effort to ensure the preservation of life by initiating first aid while simultaneously asking for health care assistance and ensuring personal safety, safety of other staff and safety of offenders immediately at the scene or those who may enter the scene. Once the health and safety of staff and offenders is assured, the officer shall control the scene until relieved. The scene of a crime is a delicate area and must be treated with the utmost care so as not to contaminate or destroy potential evidence.

Therefore, the following minimum standards shall be used to protect the scene of a crime: establish a perimeter to protect the scene, prevent any damage or further damage, evacuate non-involved persons, prevent unauthorized persons from entering the crime scene or contaminating any evidence, when personnel who have no bona fide need to be on the scene insist on entering, record their names and the times they were on the scene, for court purposes, maintain an accurate "scene log" of the names and the times that everyone enters or leaves the scene, maintain control of the scene until relieved by a designated officer or by police, when another officer arrives to assume control of the scene, verbally confirm this as a fact and record the time and the person's name and rank. The following steps shall be taken to preserve evidence: do not move anything unless absolutely necessary, to the extent possible, avoid contamination of evidence, photograph if possible before something is moved, protect physical evidence from the elements, record and identify any evidence found or moved (i.e. what, where, by whom and when), maintain evidence in possession of the person who seized it until it can be handed over to police or properly stored using the chain of custody form or tag, do not cross-contaminate evidence (i.e. keep each piece of evidence separate from other evidence), use a paper bag for bloody items, isolate witnesses from each other and other persons, if a computer is part of a crime scene and no apparent attempt to destroy computer-based evidence has been observed, the computer should not be disturbed and the computer systems administration staff should be notified, and if an apparent attempt to destroy or alter computer-based evidence has been observed (such as rapidly blinking hard drive access light), turn the computer off as quickly as possible and keep it safe from any unauthorized intervention, etc. etc.
