CATHOLIC IDENTITY

Despite some disruption this term due to members of our community being affected by COVID-19 virus we have managed to have a full term of classes. Unfortunately, a number of events have needed to be cancelled or postponed due to COVID restrictions however there is a general feeling that we have had a more consistent period of normal classes where stu dents have the opportunity to consolidate skills that benefit them educationally and socially. It has been a busy time for senior students with the GAT and a busy period of SACs and other end of term tasks and they along with all students will be looking forward to the holiday break as the VCE students turn their attention to exam preparation and VCAL students turn their attention to life beyond Secondary school.

Thank you all for your hard work and support this term; I wish all students and staff a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break.

There was a student led prayer ceremony at recess on Friday that included raising the flags to half-mast.

Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral, bringing to an end the longest reign of any monarch in British history. No matter our personal stance on the Royal Family and their constitutional place in Australian society, Queen Elizabeth II has been a consistent leader and role model for all of us and older generations. She has lived through many historical events and met many of the world’s significant leaders and characters. Grace, respect, integrity and national pride and dedication to duty are terms that come to mind.

Pope Francis offered his condolences to King Charles, the royal family, and the peoples of the United King dom and the Commonwealth, and said he joined all

Jim Samon Acting Principal

Congratulations to all the cast and crew on fantastic Performances of Legally Blonde! What an enjoyable experience seeing so many of our students shine on stage. Their joy in performing was evident in all their faces. It was great to see some familiar faces in the orchestra as well. Well done to Julie and all involved in all aspects of such a fun-filled and professional show. I am sure the Galen and wider Wangaratta commu nity enjoyed seeing our talented students performing so beautifully on the big stage and witnessing such a professional and engaging production that involves so many students and staff. We are so fortunate as a school to have producers, directors, musicians and backstage staff such as Julie Nolan and her team and Beth Code and Felicity Davis and the music team.

Reminder Friday, (16th) is a pupil free day due to Parent Teacher Interviews. Last day of Term 3 for students is Thursday 15th September, with a 3.30pm finish. There is information about the Parent Teacher Interviews that has been communicated home regard ing bookings and information about student learning is accessible on PAM. It is one of few formal opportu nities that parents and teachers have to meet about your child’s learning and opportunities for improve ment and growth.

All our students deserve to learn in fit-for-purpose school buildings and grounds that support their learning and personal development.

5 September 2022

Catholic families already pay their fair share and shouldn’t be expected to pay more.

Dear parents and carers

Extending the Victorian Government’s School Bus Program in regional and rural areas will give Catholic students equal rights to use the bus to travel to school and end situations where one child from a family can use the school bus, but their sibling is denied that right.

We write to you today to outline our plan to meet growth in student numbers in the Catholic sector and its benefits to you and your family.

The Catholic Education Commission of Victoria (CECV) appreciates your continued support for your child’s learning during the last two years and we thank you for your patience as we have navigated new ways of teaching and learning

Our plan for the upcoming Victorian State Election

This funding will go towards building new schools in growing communities and updating and maintaining our existing and ageing school buildings.

At CECV, we proudly represent 500 schools including yours and support 32,000 teachers and support staff who provide high quality education to more than 211,000 students across the State and we continue to grow.

As the approved authority for Catholic education in Victoria, your child’s education is of the utmost importance to us.

That’s why in the lead up to the State election in November, we will continue to put forward our case to the major political parties and seek a significant commitment towards capital funding of $150 200 million per annum over four years.

We will also be seeking a commitment to increase recurrent and capital kindergarten funding to give every child the best start in life and ease the financial pressure on families that choose a Catholic kindergarten for their child.

Catholic students deserve equal access to Victorian Government health and transport programs, and we will be seeking additional commitments in these areas. Fair access for Catholic students to the already established Smile Squad dental program will lead to better and more equal dental health outcomes.

As a result, we have developed a plan for the Catholic education sector that will ensure our schools can keep up with growing demand into the future and our students have access to school infrastructure, which meets all the needs of a modern and evolving curriculum.

The full list of the commitments we are seeking from the major parties is on our website at cecv.catholic.edu.au/funding

We also want to see the targeted funding for teacher recruitment expanded to include Catholic schools in regional, rural and hard to staff areas, so that students in those areas can continue to receive a high-quality Catholic education
