OUT OF MANY. ONE.
At this moment in our history, using our voices and telling our stories couldn’t be more important to creating cultural understanding amongst all people.
Places like GableStage and creators like Charise Castro Smith bring us together in a way that changes us for the better. The theater unites us as a community, even if it’s only for one night.
As a producer, activist, and philanthropist, my commitment to our country is to seek out new, diverse voices and to create opportunities for them to express their talents and make their voices heard.
Because that is what the American Dream is all about.
It is an honor to be a part of the world premiere
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Why Here, Why Now?
Last night I read about the killing of Majidreza Rahnavard, the 23 year old Iranian man who was convicted of crimes committed during the nationwide protests challenging the country’s theocracy. He was publicly hanged from a construction crane as a gruesome warning to others.
We will not be silent. I, like you, was disgusted to read the vile remarks by Kanye, multiplied by his legions of fans and was heartsick to hear Chapelle compound them further on national TV.
We will not be silent.
Breonna Taylor. Daunte Wright. Andre Hill. Manuel Ellis. George Floyd. Attatiana Jefferson. Aura Rosser. Stephon Clark. Botham Jean. Philando Castile. Alton Sterling. Freddie Gray. Eric Garner. Tamir Rice. Michael Brown. Jayland Walker…………..
We will not be silent. I did not know Sophie and Hans Scholl’s heroic story until reading David Meyers’ captivating play. But now I do. And now you do, too.
We will not be silent.
Bari Newport Producing Artistic Director
Breonna Taylor. Daunte Wright. Andre Hill. Manuel Ellis. George Floyd. Attatiana Jefferson. Aura Rosser. Stephon Clark. Bothanm Jean. Philando Castile. Alton Sterling, Freddie Gray. Eric Garner. Tamir Rice. Michael Brown.Jayland Walker.................
NOTE FROM THE PRODUCING
DRAMATURG'S NOTE
As a dramaturg, one of my goals is to help the creative team immerse themselves in the world of the play. This consists of first imagining the world of the play and then making use of primary and secondary sources to arrange that information into a digestible, selective, and creative account.
The more I delved into Sophie’s world the more viscerally I felt the sense of paranoia and claustrophobia of 1943 Munich and the myopia brought about by propaganda and censorship. Her act of resistance against the mammoth force of Nazism was really put into perspective. Armed with literature, philosophy, and “degenerate” art, Sophie and the White Rose group sought to educate and embolden those around them - to open their eyes and “fight against the present state.’”
To all the Sophies, Malalas, and the women of Iran who continue to embolden us: You are seen. You are heard. Your words and actions matter. Thank you for your bravery - for reminding us that “the responsibility is ours.”
Karina Batchelor Dramaturg

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
David Meyers (Playwright) fell in love with theater at the tender age of 6 when he saw Peter Pan on Broadway. He loved the production and refused to leave until he could see the show again (he was promptly ejected from the theater by a disgruntled usher). David’s first stage performance was an elementary school talent show, where he sang “I’m Flying” from Peter Pan. David continued to act throughout his childhood and teenage years at various professional and community theaters, summer camp (French Woods), and his bedroom. David auditioned for and was accepted to the acting conservatory at Boston University. During his freshman year, he became bewitched by politics and transferred to Rutgers University where he received a degree in political science (and also did some professional theater in New York and New Jersey). David later moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked in the White House and the Senate. After the adventure of a lifetime, David moved returned to his first loves of acting and writing.

Her work as a director and actor has been seen at Horizon Theatre Company, Greenbrier Valley Theatre, American Stage, Cumberland County Playhouse, Florida Repertory Theatre, Sacramento Theatre Company, Westport Country Playhouse and the Williamstown Theatre Festival. EDUCATION & OUTREACH PROGRAMS
Impacting Students’ Lives
With a mission of confronting today’s issues and ideas, GableStage has played an important role in Miami’s professional theatre ecology since 1979. Starting as the Florida Shakespeare Theatre and reinventing itself in 1998 as GableStage, the company has been at the forefront of producing provocative theatre. The company’s intimate, edgy, and inspiring work has been seen by over 400,000 patrons and 250,000 students.
For decades, thousands of Miami-Dade high school students were exposed to dynamic, contemporary storytelling through GableStage’s much–lauded student matinee series. Now, after a long hiatus, GableStage, under the leadership of new producing artistic director, Bari Newport and with generous funding from the Green Family Foundation, proudly reinstates this impactful offering.
The company’s flagship in-school offering, Shakespeare-in-the-Schools, visits 20+ Miami-Dade public and private high schools each year. Using a company of emerging theatre artists, GableStage harkins back to its roots as a Shakespeare company, by performing a 50-minute adaptation of Shakespeare’s most popular classics. Each production is re-imagined in a contemporary context.
A number of dramaturgical opportunities for adult theatre goers to expand their understanding of professional theatre production are now being offered on-line and at the theatre. These efforts highlight Newport’s personal desire to inspire a life-long passion for the theatrical art form in all members of the community.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH PROGRAMS
Shakespeare-in-the-Schools
GableStage’s longstanding education initiative that performs 40 performances at upwards of 20 Miami-Dade public and private schools each season, makes a special stop at GableStage March 7 at 7 pm. William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, Twelfth Night, is a story filled with romance and mistaken identities. In this adaptation, the coast of Illyria is replaced with the vast beaches of Miami, while Haiti stands powerfully in the place of our protagonist’s homeland of Messaline. Boosted by music, poetic language and rich cultural references, this Twelfth Night carefully explores the diverse tapestry of Miami and the migrant stories that have shaped the city many call home.
Mainstage Student Matinees
Mainstage student matinees introduce high school students to professional, high-quality theatre productions which confront today’s issues and ideas. Exposure to professional theatre nurtures compassion, self awareness, tolerance, and provides essential tools for students to become strong, influential leaders of the future.

IN-KIND SUPPORT WISH LIST
There are many ways to support our theatre: you can donate anything from rehearsal/warehouse space to flowers and plants. Donations are tax deductible!
Vehicles
VAN: In addition to being able to bring our work to more locations within our community, having our own van will allow us to transport sets, props and costume pieces from storage to the theatre in no time.
CARS: Out-of-town artists need to be able to get around. At the very least, they need to travel from artist housing to the theatre and the grocery store. Having vehicles of our own would eliminate the need to rent a fleet of cars. Help!
Housing
Have a guest house, vacation house or Airbnb? Housing with kitchens are needed for out-of-town artists staying two weeks or more.
Rehearsal Space
Have a large rec room? We need a mid-size space – 800 sq. ft. or more – to rehearse a play while another production is performing at the theatre.
Warehouse Space
Our theatre is intimate. Outside and inside. Extra warehouse space will help us store furniture, props and other materials used in the productions.
Airline Miles
Help bring out-of-town artists and playwrights to the productions.
Food & Hospitality Gift Cards
Support our artists! Meals are appreciated.
Flowers & Plants
Help beautify the entrance to GableStage! Plants and flowers in planters are welcome! Ready to donate?
