When an estranged brother appears late one night and mysterious objects are discovered among the clutter, long-hidden secrets and buried resentments can no longer be contained and the family is forced to face the ghosts of their past. SUMMER, 1976

March 28 - April 20

As the Bicentennial is celebrated across the country, these two women navigate motherhood, ambition, and intimacy, and help each other discover their own independence. This deeply moving, insightful piece by Pulitzer winner David Auburn is about connection, memories, and the small moments that can change the course of our lives. Starring Patti Gardner and Sara Morsey. A Miami Premiere.

“Sharply observant... a story of profound connection and awakening disquiet.” – The New York Times

FAT HAM

Juicy, a Black queer Southern kid, has a lot on his plate already when his father’s ghost shows up, demanding vengeance. As generations clash at the family’s backyard barbeque, Juicy must face the legacies of violence he’s been raised with and shape the man he wants to be. Winner of the 2022 Pulitzer Prize. This historic three-way co-production is made possible through major funding from the Warten Foundation. A South Florida Premiere.

History of GableStage

Founded in 1979 as Florida Shakespeare Theatre, GableStage originally performed the plays of Shakespeare in repertory, using the outdoor Casino Gardens at Vizcaya. From 1987 to 1992, Florida Shakespeare Theatre was housed in the Minorca Playhouse in Coral Gables, until it was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew. But the theatre’s mission could not be destroyed, and it continued to produce at the Carousel Theatre in Coral Gables in 1993 and 1994. In 1998, the theatre moved to its current home, the historic Biltmore Hotel, and became GableStage.

Since 1998, GableStage has been producing quality theatrical productions that encompass themes and ideas relevant to the multicultural South Florida community at Coral Gables’ historic Biltmore Hotel. GableStage is the recipient of 64 Carbonell Awards, a prestigious South Florida theatre award, with over 200 nominations and received the Ruth Forman Award for major advancements in the South Florida theatre scene.

GableStage is one of the longest-running and most highly acclaimed theater companies in South Florida striving to present the most vital and cutting edge works of contemporary playwrights worldwide (currently over 100 successful productions). Currently, six plays are mounted annually at the Biltmore Hotel location, and productions are regularly transported to area performing arts venues such as the Lyric Theatre, the Joseph Caleb Auditorium, and The Seminole Theatre in order to engage a larger audience and outreach to the community. In addition to community outreach, GableStage works directly with the Miami-Dade Public Schools’ Cultural Passport Program to provide unique cultural access to schools, students, and teachers through school tours and/or attendance at a GableStage production at an off-site venue. Study guides are provided prior to the performances to provide indepth knowledge for students. Following the performance, a talkback is administered to engage the students and teachers in a conversation about what they experienced. All programs are offered free-of-charge.

GableStage has been approved to become the theatre-in-residence at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in conjunction with Miami-Dade County and Florida International University. After a public presentation at Ransom Everglades in December 2016, we are in the design stages with Miami-Dade County, AMS Consulting, Fisher-Dachs, Arquitectonica, and FIU. For official notices on the project, check the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs website.

GableStage is proud to be a member of the thriving South Florida theatre and business community. We are members of Theatre Communications Group, Theatre League of South Florida, Americans for the Arts, Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce, Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, and the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber Commerce.

Mission Statement

The mission of GableStage is to provide South Florida audiences with theatrical works of artistic excellence that confront today’s issues and ideas.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Bro….

What’s that saying? No matter where you go, there you are.

Well, no matter where I go, Miami is there -- in the lilt of my Liiikee, in the tumbao of my steps, in the “eh-eh-eh-eh” that comes out of me when I dance with my friends.

There was a time when I couldn’t get out of Miami fast enough. I thought the “real me” existed outside of this humid bubble. It didn’t take long for life to smack me with the metaphorical life lesson chancleta and show me that there is nothing more delicious than to be a Miamian – but like, for real.

This play celebrates our Miami.

The Miami where the best advice comes from your abuela or your bubbe. The place where disco never died; it just evolved into Miami Sound Machine and House Music. The city where a guy named Armando could call himself Pitbull and go worldwide.

Our Miami is made up of people with grit, joy, and love. Some of us will wear our Miami with pride, and some of us will hide it. I invite you to accept the messy Miami magic within you.

I hope you, Miamian reading this, indulge in this play. I give you permission to sing, dance, clap, and laugh with us whenever you want, however you want. Be free and be real.

Oh, and we don’t care whether your laugh is HAHAHA or JAJAJA or QUAQUAQUA -- just make it yours.

305 ‘til I die,

Vicky

ABOUT DIANA "DIDI" CONTRERAS

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?

I have been drawing ever since I could remember. I was an art major in college but after I graduated I stopped for a few years. It was when I started seeing the amazing murals in Wynwood that I got really inspired to paint on a wall. I started painting little characters here and there but when I painted my first mural in Wynwood is when things changed. Her name was Sofia Rose and she was a big beautiful 15ft Latina woman. This got so much love and attention that it even got a Huff Post write up. This gave me the confidence to keep painting and to continue to push through against all fears.

Please tell us about your art.

I paint beautiful strong women on walls, canvas, cafeteras, or anything you can think of. I love mixing aerosol, oil, and acrylic to create different textures on my art. I create because I have to, it is such a part of who I am. There was a time that I didn’t create and I felt empty. I won’t ever let that happen again. I hope to inspire others to follow their dreams, whatever they may be. My artwork is made to be fun, light, happy, and positive.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?

I think it has become easier since we no longer have to depend on galleries or dealers to sell artwork. Artists are a small business and they can sell their work themselves through social media. They can now be their own publicist, manager, and do their own marketing.

Cities like ours can help artists thrive by providing low cost studio space, art grants, and more public art opportunities.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?

People can see my murals all over Miami, New York, Canada, and now Iowa. I love it when people take photos posing with my murals. It is so fun to see how they interact. People can support by posting, tagging @didirok, and of course purchasing art. Right now, you can see my art in murals around Miami such as Wynwood, Brickell, Little Haití, Little Havana, Wyn 317 Gallery or my studio.

DRAMATURGY NOTE

From the iconic sunsets casting a kaleidoscope of colors to the rhythmic Spanglish that flavors everyday conversations, Laughs in Spanish immerses audiences in the vibrant mosaic of the Magic City. Playwright Alexis Scheer declares, "It's the most unapologetically Miami thing I’ve written," and indeed, the play serves as a profound homage to the city, capturing its essence with authenticity and love.

Wynwood, once a bustling garment district (the third largest in the United States in the 80's) and later a neglected warehouse district, now pulsates with the energy of the art world, especially during the annual Basel Art Fair. This transformation underscores the power of creativity and serves as the backdrop for the characters' journeys, many of whom symbolize Miami's evolution. It delves into the intersection of art and identity, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who find solace and inspiration within Wynwood's colorful streets and eclectic galleries.

Con amor pa Miami, Laughs in Spanish stands as a testament to the city's enduring legacy as a beacon of creativity and inspiration, while spotlighting the rich community of Miamianses who call it home.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH PROGRAMS

Impacting Lives

Under the leadership of Producing Artistic Director Bari Newport, GableStage has strived to strengthen appreciation for the role theatre plays in the community by prioritizing the development of its educational initiatives. Thanks to a cadre of generous corporate, foundation and individual sponsors, GableStage continues to expand and re-imagine opportunities for inspiring optimism and imaginative problem solving for our community. Each season, 6,500 Miami-Dade students and hundreds of adult learners have the opportunity to Engage with the Stage at the theatre, at their school, on-line and at community centers near and far.

FOR ADULTS:

Pre-Show Talks | Starting 30-min before every performance, audience members are invited to deep-dive into the production at hand by joining a member of artistic team in the "cafe" in front of the theatre.

Post-Show Talk Backs | Immediately following the first Sunday and all Wednesday matinees, please stay for a robust conversation with cast and artistic team.

Diary of a Production

From script analysis to casting, designing to directing, this class takes adult learners deep into the artistic process of bringing a production to life! In its second year, this 8 week course took students on a journey through the creation of The Lehman Trilogy. Students attended three in person rehearsals to view the initial designs, meet the creative team, observe the actors and directors create choreography and to understand the collaboration between designers. Due to high demand, the 2024/2025 Season will offer two Diary Production classes. Registration is now open!

21

FOR STUDENTS:

Shakespeare-in-the-Schools

For the 11th year, GableStage has brought an abridged, contemporary adaptation of a Shakespearian classic to Miami-Dade Public Schools. GableStage was proud to officially partner with FIU Theatre to bring Macbeth to 18 schools which reached 3,000 students with only 25 performances! The vision of this program is to offer recent FIU alumni their first professional theatre opportunity while also serving the Miami's diverse population by visiting schools in all districts.

Mainstage Student Matinees

Special morning performances introduce high school students to professional, high-quality theatre productions. This season, GableStage offered 6 student matinees where an estimated 1,000 students were in attendance. Talkbacks with actors and a member of the creative team were held after every matinee which provided an opportunity for students to ask questions. Study guides were distributed prior to their scheduled visits. Miami-Dade public schools are welcome to register through the Miami-Dade Cultural Passport Program. Student matinees for Laughs in Spanish will be held on Friday, May 24 and May 31at 10:30am

IGNITE

Ignite the ambitions of the next generation of theatre artists with this powerful, new initiative. In addition to receiving tickets to all five productions, nominated partner high-schools with serious theatre students, read and study all productions and receive season-long access to GableStage artists and company members. This season we continued our partnership with Coral Reef High School and additionally partnered with Florida Memorial University (FMU) for a special miniIgnite.Want to learn more? education@gablestage.org

IN-KIND SUPPORT WISH LIST

There are many ways to support our theatre: you can donate anything from rehearsal/warehouse space to flowers and plants. Donations are tax deductible!

Vehicles

VAN: In addition to being able to bring our work to more locations within our community, having our own van will allow us to transport sets, props and costume pieces from storage to the theatre in no time.

CARS: Out-of-town artists need to be able to get around. At the very least, they need to travel from artist housing to the theatre and the grocery store. Having vehicles of our own would eliminate the need to rent a fleet of cars. Help!

Housing

Have a guest house, vacation house or Airbnb? Housing with kitchens are needed for out-of-town artists staying two weeks or more.

Rehearsal Space

Have a large rec room? We need a mid-size space – 800 sq. ft. or more – to rehearse a play while another production is performing at the theatre.

Warehouse Space

Our theatre is intimate. Outside and inside. Extra warehouse space will help us store furniture, props and other materials used in the productions.

Airline Miles

Help bring out-of-town artists and playwrights to the productions.

Food & Hospitality Gift Cards

Support our artists! Meals are appreciated.

Flowers & Plants

Help beautify the entrance to GableStage! Plants and flowers in planters are welcome!

Ready to donate?

Contact us at kkramitz@gablestage.org
