NOTE FROM THE PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Why here? Why now?

Those are two questions that I ask myself as artistic director for every production chosen for a season. In the case of this production of Arthur Miller’s The Price, the answer is intimate Photo George Schiavone ERH XMQIP] XLMW [EW .SI %HPIV´W ½REP HMVIGXSVMEP effort – stopped short, just before opening, by a global pandemic and then by his passing on April 16, 2020. This production is more than a tribute to “the godfather of South Florida theatre,” it is a love letter.

The production you are about to experience is a marriage of Joe’s vision and my own. The remarkable set, designed by Lyle Baskin, one of Joe’s closest friends and collaborators for over three decades, took my breath E[E] [LIR - ½VWX IRXIVIH XLI XLIEXVI PEWX *IFVYEV] *SV QSRXLW MX LEW sat on stage, waiting to be awakened.

The cast assembled by Joe includes Patti Gardner, George Schiavone and Michael McKenzie. They are joined by longtime GableStage favorites Gregg Weiner who joins the cast as Victor and Peter Haig who alternates in the role of Solomon.

Costume and sound design by Emil White and Matt Corey are as Joe intended, but lighting design has been reimagined by Tony Galaska. The incredible array of props and set dressing are by Beth and Clara Fath and IRLERGIH F]© QI ;I LEZI XVMIH XS ½PP IZIV] RSSO ERH GVERR] - LSTI ]SY have as much fun looking at the vast array of items as we had in collecting them.

Katie Ellison, GableStage’s trusted production stage manager for six seasons provided me with Joe’s staging notes. Those notes were the foundation for this production.

I know of no better way to honor one’s memory than through the act of creation. Joe, we hope we have made you proud.

Son dos preguntas que me hago como directora artística de cada producción escogida para una temporada. En el caso El precio de Arthur Miller, la respuesta es íntima y oportuna: se trata del Photo Magnus Stark último esfuerzo de Joe Adler como director, interrumpido justo antes del estreno por una pandemia mundial y luego por su fallecimiento el 16 de abril de 2020. Esta producción es más que un homenaje al “padrino del teatro del sur de Florida”, es una carta de amor.

La producción que van a experimentar es una unión entre la visión de Joe y la mía. WHO’S WHO About the Playwright Arthur Miller (Playwright) (1915-2005) was born in New York City and studied at the University of Michigan. His plays include The Man Who Had All the Luck, All My Sons, Death of A Salesman, The Crucible, A View From the Bridge, A Memory of Two Mondays, After the Fall, Incident at Vichy, The Price, The Creation of the World and Other Business, The Archbishop’s Ceiling, The American Clock, and Playing For Time. Later plays include The Ride Down Mt. Morgan, The Last Yankee, Broken Glass, Mr. Peters’ Connections, Resurrection Blues, and Finishing the Picture. Patti Gardner* (Esther Franz) If home is where the heart is… it’s good to be home. Previous performances at GableStage include: 7KH *X\V 'HÀDQFH 6RQV of the Prophet, Casa Valentina, If I Forget and the co-production with Palm Beach Dramaworks, Ordinary Americans. Patti has been performing in South Florida for over thirty years from Miami to Jupiter. She has toured nationally for seventeen years with Menopause the Musical and is a Carbonell, Silver Palm and New Times Best award recipient for her work. She remains humbled and grateful to complete this long awaited journey of The Price. To Joe, for all that came before….and to Bari, for all that is yet to be.

Peter Haig* (Gregory Solomon) has been a member of the South Florida theater community since 1978. Of his six GableStage productions, his favorites are Choir Boy, Nixon’s Nixon, and The Diary of Anne Frank. In the 1960s he worked in New York under the direction of George C. Scott and Joseph Papp, among others. In the 1970s he directed the Thalian Association, “the nation’s oldest community theater,” in Wilmington, N.C. and founded an African-American dramatic group there, the Willis Richardson Players. His theatrical journey includes performances at Rikers Island and the Kennedy Center.

Michael McKenzie* (Walter Franz) appeared as Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha for the MNM Theater at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. He has also performed at Palm Beach Dramaworks (Sweeney Todd), Theater Lab at FAU (We Will Not Be Silent) the Caldwell Theater (Dangerous, Déjà Vu) and the Cuillo Center (Dinner With Friends). Broadway- Waiting in the Wings (with Lauren Bacall), The Man Who Came to Dinner (with Nathan Lane), Eastern Standard. Off BroadwayKari Floren’s If Wishes Were Horses, A Late Supper, Voices of Swords. About the Creative Team Lyle Baskin (Set Design) has designed sets at GableStage for the last 21 years and mourns the passing of Joseph Adler. His creative collaboration with Joseph began 4 decades ago with The Killing of Sister George (Player’s Theatre), Shadow Box (Carbonell winner, Coconut Playhouse), Cantorial (Hollywood Playhouse). He received Carbonell nominations for the GableStage productions of Lieutenant of Inishmore, Full Gallop, Killer Joe, A Lesson Before Dying, Boy Gets Girl, and Misery. Matt Corey (Sound Design) is proud to have collaborated with Joseph Adler and the GableStage team on over 95 productions since 2005. Matt is the President and CEO of Insight for the Blind in Fort Lauderdale, an all-volunteer recording studio that makes media accessible for the blind and print handicapped, through their participation in the Library of Congress’ Talking Books program. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Bassoon Performance at the University of Miami and continues to play professionally in The Symphonia of Boca Raton, and the Kravis Center Pops Orchestra with Michael Feinstein.

Katie Ellison* (Production Stage Manager) LV WKULOOHG WR EH RQ KHU ÀIWK VHDVRQ as the Resident Production Stage Manager at GableStage. Outside of GableStage, she recently had the privilege of working with Miami New Drama on their production of Seven Deadly Sins. Other credits include Assistant Stage Manager for Peter and The Starcatcher at the Adrienne Arsht Center and Assistant Stage Manager for Zoetic Stage’s productions of Stripped and Rapture Blister Burn. She was also the Production Stage Manager for Orchestra Miami’s Music at The Biltmore and The Mice War. Katie is a proud graduate of the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Stage Management. She is profoundly lucky to have the continued support and love of her husband Kevin and their two dogs, Milo and Penny.

Tony Galaska (Lightning Design) is an associate professor and head of Design DQG 3URGXFWLRQ DW ),8 +LV ÀUVW SURGXFWLRQ ZLWK *DEOH6WDJH ZDV RQ The Children and his design work has been seen at The Contemporary American Theatre Festival, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, The Texas Shakespeare Theatre Festival and in NYC with companies such as Toy Box Theatre Company,The Gallery Players, Wings Theatre Company, Metropolitan Playhouse and New Perspectives Theatre Company. Tony has received faculty Design Excellence Awards from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) for his lighting design of The Cook, Spring Awakening, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings and The House of the Spirits. Tony is currently the Chair of Design, Technology and Management for KCACTF Region IV. He received his M.F.A. in lighting design from Purdue University, a B.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and an A.A. from the University of Wisconsin Waukesha.

During her years as Costume Designer for Disney Storytelling Musicals at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, she found the magic in theatre and switched her major from Nursing to Theater! Angelina received her B.A. in Theater from Florida International University where she was the Assistant Costume Designer for Flea in her Ear. She also was the Costume Supervisor for the following VKRUW ÀOPV Rememory, Broken Records and LUDI. Angelina costume designed Empire Stage’s production of Clemenza and Tessio Are Dead, Willow Theatre’s production of To Life 2 and Stylist for local music artist Kapoh’s music video “HIGH.” Bari Newport (Director & Producing Artistic Director) joined GableStage as producing artistic director in April 2021. She came to Miami from the Penobscot Theatre Company in Bangor, Maine, where she served as artistic director for nine seasons. Previously, she was artistic associate at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, artistic associate/literary manager at the Pasadena Playhouse, associate producer at Horizon Theatre and associate director of Florida Repertory Theatre. As a producer, Newport has been responsible for the creation and stabilization of a wide range of artistic initiatives, including extensive work in new play development, education and community engagement. While leading Penobscot—which serves 40,000 people each season—Newport doubled the budget in eight years, produced ÀYH ZRUOG SUHPLHUHV FUHDWHG D SDUWQHUVKLS ZLWK WKH 3HQREVFRW 1DWLYH $PHULFDQ

Nation, with whom she developed two large-scale NEA-supported projects, DQG IXOO\ IXQGHG WKH FRPSDQ\·V ÀUVW HQGRZPHQW 6KH NHSW KHU HQWLUH VWDII RI employed during the pandemic and produced an innovative season that included 17 newly commissioned, digital projects. Her work as a director and actor has been seen at Horizon Theatre Company, Greenbrier Valley Theatre, American Stage, Cumberland County Playhouse, Florida Repertory Theatre, Sacramento Theatre Company, Westport County Playhouse and the Williamstown Theatre Festival.

Emil White (Costume Design) is thrilled to once again return to the GableStage design crew, having joined as Costume Designer for The Children and continuing in subsequent productions to Watson. Emil’s work has been seen throughout Florida, New York City, as well as many regional theaters that include Actors Theatre, Jenny Wiley Theatre, Flatrock Playhouse, Island City Stage and Palm Beach Opera.

WHO’S WHO About the Company Ana Maria Carrano (Director of Marketing & Community Engagement) is thrilled to join the staff after serving as a board member for three years. She believes in the transformative power of the arts and innovation. Her background is in journalism, publications and entrepreneurship. As a journalist, Carrano has worked on visual arts, cultural heritage, and human rights projects. She recently collaborated with the fact-checking project at Univision network and on stories about formerly incarcerated people. Jenna Fernandez (Audience & Community Relations) is excited to be a part of this new era of the GableStage. A South Florida native, Jenna has had the privilege of working with venues throughout her community, such as the Adrienne Arsht Center, Miramar Cultural Center, Parker Playhouse and the Wertheim Performing Arts Center. When she’s not at the theatre, she can be found running on the Rickenbacker Causeway or teaching yoga in the park.

Diana Garle (Social Media Specialist) is delighted to have joined the team this year in-house! She has found a love for running social media particularly for the theatre community and entertainment industry additionally managing accounts as Social Media Coordinator for City Theatre, Theatre Lab and Equal Justice Studios.

Diana is also a bicoastal Latinx actor. You may recognize her from several GableStage productions such as The Humans, Kings and Watson. Diana will be starring as the lead in The Rebirth D IHDWXUH ÀOP EHJLQQLQJ SURGXFWLRQV :LQWHU DQG ZLOO EH MRLQLQJ City Theatre in June 2022 acting in their 25th Anniversary Summer Shorts festival at The Adrienne Arsht Center. WHO’S WHO Alejandro Jose Martin (Artistic Administrator) has served at GableStage since 2012, joining full time in 2013 - that’s 44 productions, 42 of which as assistant to the late Joseph Adler. Prone to wander in his interests, he has previously worked as a news contractor, mixologist, construction worker, graphic designer, sales rep & a stint at one particularly colorful marketing studio - along with acquiring a couple bachelors & minors. He enjoys the perpetual change in theatre. He dreams of becoming a sokushinbutsu one day.

Chandra Maye (Director of Operations) newly joins the GableStage team with over 20 years experience of operational management in various industries including arts & entertainment, education and telecommunication and specializes in comprehensive HR management, logistics and coordination, budgeting, project management, marketing, and staff development. Born Canadian with Jamaican roots and Philly/NYC blossoms, a Temple University graduate, she is an avid traveller, lover of the arts (and one of the chillest people you will ever meet). She hails from the Northeast with loving partner and Yorkie in tow to Florida. “I am very excited to be a part of the GableStage team during this next phase of growth and share the interesting, diverse, educational, enlightening, and fun stories and programs that we have planned for the future.”

During her time at the Arsht, she managed hundreds of events, but highlights include: watching Tony Bennett soundcheck in a matching tracksuit, burning Joe Biden’s pasta, having a moment with Kamala Harris during the second NBC Presidential Debate, and getting David Beckham one of the best Cuban sandwiches he’s ever had. Prior to the Arsht, she was the Production Stage Manager at GableStage for eight years of shows including The Adding Machine, Blasted, Round-Heeled Woman, Ruined, and The Royale.

Carlos Rodriguez (Technical Director) has been with Gablestage for over 20 years! He is a “Jack-of- All-Trades” with a plethora of experience in carpentry, props, sound, and electrics. He has a passion for what he does as well as working with people. Some of Carlos’ favorite productions have been Killer Joe, Fahrenheit 451, Ruined, and The Motherf**ker with the Hat. Carlos is thrilled to be able to continue Joe’s legacy.

Since he became Producing Artistic Director, GableStage has been the recipient of 64 Carbonell Awards and 227 Carbonell Nominations. He was awarded the Arts and Entertainment Community Service Award presented by the South Florida International Press Club, and the Truth Award from the Human Services Coalition. He received a Silver Palm Award for his “Outstanding Support of the South Florida Theatre Community, the Theatre League and the Theatre Festival, as well as his Consistent Outstanding Work at GableStage and his Commitment to an Educational Outreach Program in Miami-Dade County.”

Adler studied drama at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and graduated from the Film Department at NYU.

More than One Million Students 7MRGI +EFPI7XEKI°JSVQIVP] ORS[R EW *PSVMHE 7LEOIWTIEVI 8LIEXVI°LEW been privileged to introduce over one million Miami-Dade County Middle and High School Public school students to live theatre productions of the highest quality. The Shakespeare in the Schools program partners with the MDCPS Cultural Passport Program to bring an abridged show directly to high school students during the school day.

Selected plays focus on the classic works of Shakespeare and have been presented to public and private schools throughout Miami-Dade County. Careful consideration is taken to ensure that the highest quality of teaching artists are involved with the tour.

The primary objectives of these productions are to expose culturally underserved students to an important work that may speak to their lives or the world today; allow the students to hear Shakespeare’s words out loud in a creative manner rather than read in a classroom; and to create a conversation around the historical elements of the production versus the storytelling devices used.

During the performance, students are directly encouraged by actors to seek out live cultural events within the community, see Shakespeare’s works in a new light, and continue their studies with historical works of theatre and literature.
