OUT OF MANY. ONE.
At this moment in our history, using our voices and telling our stories couldn’t be more important to creating cultural understanding amongst all people.
Places like GableStage and creators like Charise Castro Smith bring us together in a way that changes us for the better. The theater unites us as a community, even if it’s only for one night.
As a producer, activist, and philanthropist, my commitment to our country is to seek out new, diverse voices and to create opportunities for them to express their talents and make their voices heard.
Because that is what the American Dream is all about.
It is an honor to be a part of the world premiere

Why Here, Why Now?
I have to be honest, I didn’t totally “get” this play when I first encountered it a couple of years ago. When the stunning actress Margery Lowe presented it to me last spring as a project she was eager to sink her teeth into, I took another look.
Maybe it was because on second look, the project still struck me as an enigma – a piece I just couldn’t totally put my finger on or maybe it was because my husband really fell in love with the play and this in turn made it that much more intriguing to me – but because I didn’t totally “get” it – I wanted to take on the challenge of figuring it out.
I started by unpacking the Heisenberg principle, also known as the uncertainty principle. Formulated by the German physicist and Nobel laureate Werner Heisenberg in 1927, the uncertainty principle states that we cannot know both the position and speed of an object with perfect accuracy; the more we nail down the object’s position, the less we know about its speed and vice versa.
I became consumed with wanting to identify this principle within the action of the play – to actualize the scientific principle physically. Dramaturgically we have two characters who make up both elements of the principle: Georgie, who has speed but no anchor – unmoored as she searches for her place in the world, and Alex, who is stuck – whose trajectory forward is unclear.
But beyond these two unlikely lives pin balling and setting the other on a wholly new course, which is kind of a mental exercise for an audience, I was curious about how to visually bring this principle to life.
One of the great joys of theatre-making is collaborating with other artists. In this case the seamless collaboration between set, lighting, sound, costumes, properties and projection design, married with Jeni Hacker’s elegant choreography – work together to not only allow audiences to understand the idea theoretically, but work together to allow audiences to viscerally make sense of the principle.
To me, art is felt, not thought. In order to work on this play, I needed to excavate where the heart and the science met.
And where my heart connected. I mentioned that my husband read this play and was immediately captured by it. My husband is 20 years older than me. We met as neighbors thirteen years ago. I was chasing something and he was waiting for something. In many ways, perhaps this is our story.

DRAMATURG'S NOTE
Whenever I analyze a play, it falls into one of two categories. Those where the playwright analyzes distinct societal problems, laying out clear thematic takeaways for the audience, and human plays, whose meaning is shaped by the audience’s own perceptions and norms, rather than the playwright’s.
While Simon Stephens’ Heisenberg challenges social norms around age and love, it never attempts to assert what is right, what is acceptable, or even what is true. Stephens’ characters instead grapple with the reality of human condition as presented by Heisenberg, capturing the duality of his principle within themselves.
Whether by being guided by their ideals and fantasies or by meticulously walking through life, reducing uncertainty by eliminating vulnerability and connection, neither character has found equanimity through their approach and must achieve balance to confront their own underlying uncertainty.
Neither character, nor the audience, can ever know the true intentions of the other. But by embracing uncertainty, they find the only certain comfort offered to us in life, in one another.
Sammy Heroux Dramaturg

Impacting Students’ Lives
With a mission of confronting today’s issues and ideas, GableStage has played an important role in Miami’s professional theatre ecology since 1979. Starting as the Florida Shakespeare Theatre and reinventing itself in 1998 as GableStage, the company has been at the forefront of producing provocative theatre. The company’s intimate, edgy, and inspiring work has been seen by over 400,000 patrons and 250,000 students.
For decades, thousands of Miami-Dade high school students were exposed to dynamic, contemporary storytelling through GableStage’s much–lauded student matinee series. Now, after a long hiatus, GableStage, under the leadership of new producing artistic director, Bari Newport and with generous funding from the Green Family Foundation, proudly reinstates this impactful offering.

The company’s flagship in-school offering, Shakespeare-in-the-Schools, visits 20+ Miami-Dade public and private high schools each year. Using a company of emerging theatre artists, GableStage harkins back to its roots as a Shakespeare company, by performing a 50-minute adaptation of Shakespeare’s most popular classics. Each production is re-imagined in a contemporary context.
A number of dramaturgical opportunities for adult theatre goers to expand their understanding of professional theatre production are now being offered on-line and at the theatre. These efforts highlight Newport’s personal desire to inspire a life-long passion for the theatrical art form in all members of the community.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH PROGRAMS

Shakespeare-in-the-Schools

GableStage’s longstanding education initiative that performs 40 performances at upwards of 20 Miami-Dade public and private schools each season, makes a special stop at GableStage March 7 at 7 pm.
William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, Twelfth Night, is a story filled with romance and mistaken identities. In this adaptation, the coast of Illyria is replaced with the vast beaches of Miami, while Haiti stands powerfully in the place of our protagonist’s homeland of Messaline. Boosted by music, poetic language and rich cultural references, this Twelfth Night carefully explores the diverse tapestry of Miami and the migrant stories that have shaped the city many call home.
Mainstage Student Matinees
Mainstage student matinees introduce high school students to professional, high-quality theatre productions which confront today’s issues and ideas. Exposure to professional theatre nurtures compassion, self awareness, tolerance, and provides essential tools for students to become strong, influential leaders of the future.

IN-KIND SUPPORT WISH LIST
There are many ways to support our theatre: you can donate anything from rehearsal/warehouse space to flowers and plants. Donations are tax deductible!
Vehicles

VAN: In addition to being able to bring our work to more loca tions within our community, having our own van will allow us to transport sets, props and costume pieces from storage to the theatre in no time.
CARS: Out-of-town artists need to be able to get around. At the very least, they need to travel from artist housing to the theatre and the grocery store. Having vehicles of our own would elimi nate the need to rent a fleet of cars. Help!

Housing

Have a guest house, vacation house or Airbnb? Housing with kitchens are needed for out-of-town artists staying two weeks or more.

Rehearsal Space
Have a large rec room? We need a mid-size space – 800 sq. ft. or more – to rehearse a play while another production is performing at the theatre.
Warehouse Space
Our theatre is intimate. Outside and inside. Extra warehouse space will help us store furniture, props and other materials used in the productions.
Airline Miles

Help bring out-of-town artists and playwrights to the produc tions.

Food & Hospitality Gift Cards
Support our artists! Meals are appreciated.
Flowers & Plants
Help beautify the entrance to GableStage! Plants and flowers in planters are welcome! Ready to donate?
