One’s first season as Artistic Director of a theatre company is an R&D year. It is a time when one Photo Magnus Stark must get one’s hands plunged deeply into the soil to see what seeds are planted and what grounds are fertile. It is a time to invest deeply in the mission statement, but it is also a time to experiment with where the company may grow in the future.

Boca is a collaboration with Barrington Stage, the much lauded, much larger Berkshire-based theatre company, founded and led by legendary director, Julianne Boyd. In addition to Julie being a fearless theatrical trailblazer, conceiving and directing iconic Broadway hits like Euibie! and A…My Name is Alice, she was on the board and then president of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, (the union for professional stage directors) for eighteen years – all while raising a family.

It is a great honor to have Julie direct this production, a play she shepherded from its inception. What began as a 10 min play written by Jessica Provenz for Barrington’s 10x10 shorts festival in 2021, expanded into a full production, produced by Barrington Stage last summer. It has now been further reimagined for this GableStage production.

In GableStage’s extraordinary 23 year history, the company has only produced three world-premieres. While it is imperative to produce tried and true works of excellence, it is equally important to boldly take risks on new works.

Boca is dedicated to two Mo’s, who helped inspire the character Mo, described as “a ray of sunshine.”

Morris "Mo" Levitt (1933 - 2021) and his wife Rhoda began their lifelong travels as newlyweds in Yokohama, Japan, where Mo served in the U.S. Armed Forces. He was President of the Hi-Grade Food Company and is survived by Rhoda, their three children and nine grandchildren. An avid golfer and card player, Mo was a generous contributor to philanthropic causes.

Monroe “Moe” England (1930 – 2021) was a Marine Corps veteran who spent 40 years in the liquor business after he and his second wife, Elise, started a branch of Merchant Du Vin and began importing high-end beers from Europe to the U.S. Moe is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth, two stepdaughters and five grandchildren. He was a great supporter of the arts.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT Jessica Provenz Boca had its World Premiere at Barrington Stage Company in 2021, where it received seven Berkshire Theatre Critic nominations including Best New Play. Other productions and workshops include A Wake on Chappaquiddick (Cape Cod Theatre Project, New Georges, Irish Rep), True Art (Pioneer Theatre, Directors Company), Andromeda (The Barrow Group, Berkshire Playwrights Lab), Better than Chocolate (Juilliard). Jessica received commissions from The Araca Group, Killer Films and Barrington Stage and is a regular contributor to magazines, and wrote a feature for NY Magazine, about serving as Anthony Weiner’s Policy Director in his 2013 mayoral run. She was a 2021 Writer-in-Residence with Straw Dog Writer's Guild at Edith Wharton's The Mount. A two-time recipient of the Lecomte du Nouy Award for Emerging Playwrights, she received a B.S. from Northwestern University and was Artist-in-Residence at The Juilliard School. She lives in Lenox, MA with her 10 year old son, who laughs at all her jokes.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR Julianne Boyd# Julianne is the co-founder (1995) and Artistic Director of the Barrington Stage Company (Pittsfield, MA) where she has directed many productions, including the 2018 critically acclaimed productions of West Side Story and the 2017 hit production of Company starring Aaron Tveit. She also directed the world premiere of Christopher Demos-Brown’s American Son, which won the Laurents-Hatcher Award for Best New Play of 2016 and later moved to Broad-

way. Other productions Boyd directed include the world premieres of Mark St. Germain’s Dancing Lessons, Dr. Ruth, All the Way and Best of Enemies. Other productions include the critically acclaimed revival of Goldman and Sondheim’s Follies and BSC’s smash hit production of Cabaret, which transferred to the Hasty Pudding Theatre in Cambridge, MA. Boyd conceived and directed the Broadway musical Eubie!, based on the music of Eubie Blake which starred Gregory Hines and garnered three Tony nominations. She also co-conceived and directed (with Joan Micklin Silver) the award-winning Off Broadway musical revue A…My Name Is Alice (Outer Critics’ Award) and its sequel A…My Name Is Still Alice. ABOUT THE PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Bari Newport# Bari joined GableStage as producing artistic director in April 2021. She came to Miami from the Penobscot Theatre Company in Bangor, Maine, where she served as artistic director for nine seasons. Previously, she was artistic associate at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, artistic associate/literary manager at the Pasadena Playhouse, associate producer at Horizon Theatre and associate director of Florida Repertory Theatre. As a producer, Newport has been responsible for the creation and stabilization of a wide range of artistic initiatives, including extensive work in new play development, education and community engagement. While leading Penobscot—which serves 40,000 people each season— Newport doubled the budget in eight years, produced five world premieres, created a partnership with the Penobscot Nation, with whom she developed two large-scale NEA-supported projects, and fully funded the company’s

endowment. She kept her entire staff of 15 employed during the pandemic and produced an innovative season that included 17 newly commissioned, digital projects. Her work as a director and actor has been seen at Horizon Theatre Company, Greenbrier Valley Theatre, American Stage, Cumberland County Playhouse, Florida Repertory Theatre, Sacramento Theatre Company, Westport Country Playhouse and the Williamstown Theatre Festival. BFA, University of Southern California. MFA, University of Iowa. 20 years member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society and the Actor's Equity Association.

ABOUT THE CAST Beverly Blanchette (Susan/Deann) Beverly thanks Bari, Julianne, Jessica, et al for this return to Gable Stage where (incomparable and missed) Joe Adler directed her in Between Riverside and Crazy.

Basically, a SoFlo native, she’s appeared on most of its stages/screens. Memorable roles were in: Helen on Wheels, Off Balance, Stalker Bob and His Mother (Empire Stage), Dance Nation (Thinking Cap), Vincent River (Ground Up & Rising), Talk Radio (Mosaic), Across the Rails (film), Tycoon (web series), Nailed It! (Netflix), Shakespeare Troupe of SoFlo, Improv Shows, and countless commercials (“I Love My Attorney!”). She just understudied both Hillary and Marcia Lewis in When Monica Met Hillary (Miami New Drama). In 2012, she retired her long Theatre Arts Educator career (last as Theatre Dean, Dreyfoos School of Arts) to re-train at Shakespeare’s Globe, Juilliard, and Burt Reynolds’ master acting class. He is best known for his Too Jewish Trilogy: Award winning one man shows Too Jewish? (PBS, Performer of the Year '95 - NY Press Magazine; L.A. OVATION award - Best Actor In a Musical 2001; NY Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle award nominations), Too Jewish, Too! and his latest show Still Jewish After All These Years.

On TV, he was featured as Sid Raskin in the Starz TV series Magic City, as well as on Netflix’ Bloodline, A&E’s The Glades and on the NBC series Law and Order. He is the founder of Yiddishkayt Initiative (www.YILoveJewish.org) Deborah Kondelik*# (Janet/Iris) Deborah is thrilled to be performing at GableStage! Some of Deborah’s favorite roles include Emily in Reborning (Arts Garage), Margot in The Ladies Foursome (Pigs Do Fly Productions), Lorraine Sheldon in The Man Who Came to Dinner (Ring Theater), the blind Susi Hendrix in Wait Until Dark (Ruth Foreman Theater), Susannah in Bedroom Farce and Mollie in The Mousetrap (Oakland West Dinner Theater). Deborah had featured acting roles on Miami Vice and stunt performance roles on Caribe. She was a spokesperson for Burger King, Ford Motor Company, Eastern Airlines, and Hava-Tampa. Deborah performed in feature films with Terence Hill, Ernest Borgnine, Jackie Mason and Cliff Robertson. She retired from a long academic career as a Professor of Theatre where she received a “Professor of the Year” award, numerous directing awards, and three Endowed Teaching Chair awards. She is a proud mother/ grandmother of three children, seven grandchildren, two kitties, and two pups.

Robert Zukerman* (Marty/Robbie/Stan) Robert is pleased to make his GableStage debut. He’s done two dozen shows Off Broadway at such theatres as Irish Rep, the Atlantic, CSC, the Pearl, Theatre for a New Audience, etc. Regional credits include Arena Stage, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre, Penguin Rep, Triad Stage (NC), Gretna Theatre (PA), Blackfriars Theatre (where he won a San Diego Critics Circle Award for playing Finkelbaum in The Puppetmaster of Lodz), and 16 shows at Barrington Stage (where he won a best supporting actor award from the Berkshire Theatre Critics Association). He’s performed in radio (Coriolanus for WBAI-FM in NYC), television (Renaissance Gardening for Rhode Island PBS), and film (In Bed With Ulysses), toured for the USO (USAF bases in Greenland), danced for Jacques d’Amboise, narrated for the Library of Congress, and served as Theatre Program Director for the New York State Council on the Arts.

ABOUT THE CREATIVE TEAM Lyle Baskin (Scenic Designer) Lyle has designed sets at GableStage for the last 21 years and mourns the passing of Joseph Adler. His creative collaboration with Joseph began four decades ago with The Killing of Sister George (Player’s Theatre), Shadow Box (Carbonell winner, Coconut

Playhouse), Cantorial (Hollywood Playhouse). He received Carbonell nominations for the GableStage productions of Lieutenant of Inishmore, Full Gallop, Killer Joe, A Lesson Before Dying, Boy Gets Girl and Misery. Lyle’s 40 year career also includes set designs for Actors Playhouse (Evita, Carbonell nomination), Burt Reynolds Theatre, Area Stage, NewTheatre, Acme Theatre, Ring Theatre (UM), Miami-Dade Community College, Bloomsburg Theatre (Pa), Corning Summer Theatre (NY), Blowing Rock Stage Company (NC), Haywood Arts Regional Theatre (NC). Lyle and Sue Baskin currently live in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

Katie Ellison* (Production Stage Manager) Katie is thrilled to be on her fifth season as the Resident Production Stage Manager at GableStage. Outside of GableStage, she recently had the privilege of working with Miami New Drama at the Colony Theatre on their production of Seven Deadly Sins.

Other credits include Assistant Stage Manager for Peter and the Starcatcher at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and Assistant Stage Manager for Zoetic Stage’s productions of Stripped and Rapture, Blister, Burn. She was also the Production Stage Manager for Orchestra Miami’s Music at The Biltmore and The Mice War. Katie is a proud graduate of the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Stage Management. She is profoundly lucky to have the continued support and love of her husband Kevin and their two dogs, Milo and Penny.

Clara Fath (Dressing/Props Designer) Clara is a Costumer, Stylist, and Fabricator based in Brooklyn, NY, and a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and New World School of the Art high school. Most recently, her work can be seen on Leezy of Khruangbin and in Taylor Swift's All to Well short film. Other credits include The Stranger (New York); Stars on Ice; Operas: La Rondine, Don Giovanni, Ariodante, and Gianni Schicchi (Arezzo, Italy) Music Videos for Kalbells and Body Language.

Camilla Haith (Costume Designer) Camilla is South Florida based costume designer and wardrobe stylist. She is the owner of Walloping Moll LLC where she designs and builds costumes for opera, cruise ships, theatre, film, unique events, and music videos. Theatrical credits include Intelligence Systems (SoBe Institute of the Arts - World Premiere), Fairy Tales Songs of the Dandelion Woman (SoBe Institute of the Arts - World Premiere), Fences (Pennsylvania Centre Stage) and The Leopard (Frost School of Music.). Camilla holds an MFA in Costume Design from Penn State, as well as a BFA in Theatre from Penn State and a BFA in Fashion Design from the International Academy of Design and Technology, Chicago.

Sean McGinley (Assistant Sound Designer) Sean has been a sound engineer and designer with Gulfshore Playhouse,The Penobscot Theatre in Maine, Theatre Workshop of Nantucket in Massachusetts, and Starquest Performing Arts Competitions touring the country. He has done sound engineering projects with many other companies, including Center for the Arts Bonita, Theatre Zone,Ten Bucks Theatre, Robinson Ballet, and One Egg No Batter Productions. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Industry and Recording Technology from York College of Pennsylvania. He has been in love with live sound since he was thirteen and first sat behind a console at his church. Sean can be found editing music and podcasts in his free time as well as hiking and camping. He is also an audio engineer at Naples United Church of Christ. He would like to thank his family and Alivia for their continued support of his dream and passion.

Barbara Samuels^ (Lighting Designer) Barbara (she/her) is a queer lighting designer, organizer and producer residing on unceded Wappinger and Munsee Lenape land. Barbara creates design-forward live events that prioritize generosity, equity, and representation. Working nationally and

internationally, Barbara collaboratively constructs intimate and explosive lighting environments for new plays, opera and dance, aiming to unearth the human condition and consciousness of our surroundings. Barbara’s designs have been seen regionally at Bard Summerscape, Long Wharf, The Alley, A.C.T., Shakespeare Theater Company, Playmakers Rep, Trinity Rep, Pig Iron Theatre, and Kansas City Rep. New York credits include designs at Soho Rep, Ars Nova, Lincoln Center Theater (LCT3), New York Theatre Workshop, Playwrights Horizons, WP Theater, The Bushwick Starr, New Georges, and Clubbed Thumb. GABLESTAGE: A CUTTING-EDGE THEATRE HISTORY

Founded in 1979 as Florida Shakespeare Theatre, GableStage originally performed the plays of Shakespeare in repertory, using the outdoor Casino Gardens at Vizcaya. From 1987-1992, Florida Shakespeare Theatre was housed in the Minorca Playhouse in Coral Gables, until it was destroyed

by Hurricane Andrew. The company continued to produce at the Carousel Theatre in Coral Gables in 1993 and 1994. In 1999, the company moved to the historic Biltmore Hotel, and became GableStage.

Since 1999, GableStage has been at the cutting edge of theatre in South Florida, striving to present the most vital works of international, contemporary playwrights and producing quality theatrical productions that encompass themes and ideas relevant to the multicultural South Florida community. The company maintains a tradition of producing plays directly from successful Broadway and off-Broadway runs.

In addition to a robust Main Stage season, GableStage presents a variety of Education and Community Outreach programs throughout the community.

GableStage is the recipient of over 200 Carbonell Award nominations and 64 Carbonell Awards, a prestigious South Florida theatre award. In 2013, the Carbonell Awards honored GableStage with the Ruth Forman Award for major advancements in the South Florida theatre scene and in January 2016, Producing Artistic Director Joseph Adler, was deemed Champion of the Arts by the local arts funding group, Citizens Interested in Arts.

GableStage is proud to be a member of the thriving South Florida theatre community and stays true to its mission of encouraging new theatre companies, playwrights, artists, arts administrators, and local talent, therefore contributing to the growth and longevity of the South Florida cultural landscape.

IN-KIND SUPPORT WISH LIST There are many ways to support our theatre.

Donations at any level are tax deductible!

Stackable Washer and Dryer Costumes need to be cleaned! Having a washer/dryer on-site at the theatre will save time and resources.

Vehicles Van: In addition to being able to bring our work to more locations within our community, having our own van will allow us to transport sets, props and costume pieces from storage to the theatre in no time.

Cars: Out-of-town artists need to be able to get around. At the very least, they need to travel from artist housing to the theatre and the grocery store. Having vehicles of our own would eliminate the need to rent a fleet of cars. Help!

Housing Have a guest house, vacation house or Airbnb? Housing with kitchens are needed for out-of-town artists staying two weeks or more.

Warehouse Space Our theatre is intimate. Outside and inside. Extra warehouse space will help us store furniture, props and other materials used in the productions.

GABLESTAGE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

More than One Million Students Since 1979, GableStage, formerly known as Florida Shakespeare Theatre, has been privileged to introduce over one million Miami-Dade County Public Middle and High School Public school students to live theatre productions of the highest quality. The Shakespeare in the Schools program partners with the MDCPS Cultural Passport Program to bring an abridged show directly to high school students during the school day.

Selected plays focus on the classic works of Shakespeare and have been presented to public and private schools throughout Miami-Dade County. Careful consideration is taken to ensure that the highest quality of teaching artists are involved with the tour.

The primary objectives of these productions are to expose culturally underserved students to an important work that may speak to their lives or the world today; allow the students to hear Shakespeare’s words out loud in a creative manner rather than read in a classroom; and create a conversation around the historical elements of the production versus the storytelling devices used.

During the performance, students are directly encouraged by actors to seek out live cultural events within the community, see Shakespeare’s works in a new light, and continue their studies with historical works of theatre and literature.

Students, no matter their economic status, are given the opportunity to see live theatre free of charge each year of high school. Many first-time attendees have never seen a live theatrical performance.

In 2022, King Lear will be adapted and directed by Phillip Church, FIU Associate Professor, Shakespeare scholar, and Producing Director of What If Works, Inc.
