HUMBLE BRUSH DONATES 100,000 TOOTHBRUSHES TO REFUGEES

F

ollowing the recent escalations in the Middle East, Swedish toothbrush company Humble Brush (also retails in the UK) has decided to donate 100,000 eco-friendly toothbrushes to refugees. The distribution is in collaboration with the organization Assyrians Without Borders in the Nohadra area in Northern Iraq where hundreds of thousands of internal refugees have fled from Islamic State, ISIS. It is hoped that an opportunity for improved oral hygiene will contribute to an increase in the general health of those who fled. -

’’We understand that dental and oral health is not the first priority for refugees. On the other hand, good oral hygiene contributes to better general health and is valuable in the long term. Many of the refugees in Nohadra live in small villages and do not have sufficient access to medicine or toiletries. We want to do what we can to help” says Noel, licensed dentist and founder of Humble Brush.

Toothbrushes are being distributed over the next few months along with necessities such as toiletries and pharmaceuticals. A local partner, Assyrian Aid Society Iraq, is handling the distribution.

- ’’To hand out toothbrushes is one of many projects we run. Hundreds of thousands of refugees in recent years, have fled to the North-East of Iraq and have since become refugees in their own country. All supplies are needed, big and small” said Sisilya Rhawi, President of Assyrians without borders. For every toothbrush sold, Humble Brush donates one to a vulnerable child The sales value of the 100,000 donated toothbrushes is almost 400 000 GBP. Right from the company’s start in 2013, Humble Brush has been working with charitable causes. Earlier this year, Humble Brush donated 2500 toothbrushes to Assyrians Without Borders that reached refugees in Turkey and Lebanon. The non-profit organization Humble Smile Foundation gives a toothbrush or equivalent oral care to an underprivileged child for each toothbrush sold by Humble Brush. Humble Brush handles are made of bamboo and therefore biodegrades in a natural and environment friendly manner. About Humble Brush: Every year more than 5 billion toothbrushes with plastic handles are produced. The majority of these end up in landfills and oceans around the

world. Humble Brush produces, ecofriendly toothbrushes with bamboo handles, using the world’s most sustainable materials. Our Humble Brush toothbrushes are naturally antibacterial with nylon-6 bristles free from BPA-toxins, and are available for adults and children in a variety of colours. DENTAL PROFESSION TAKING A LEAD ON ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE

T

he British Dental Association (BDA) has called on patients and policymakers to help dentists rise to the challenge presented by antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in dentistry, as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) calls for a curb on inappropriate antibiotic prescribing in the NHS. [1] The World Health Organization has identified AMR as a serious threat to public health worldwide. The BDA set out a blueprint for the action on AMR, launched at its annual conference in May, and is now working with national leaders and international experts to combat the risks. [2] Dr Graham Stokes, Chair of the BDA Health and Science Committee said: “Antibiotics won’t cure an

abscess, so patients shouldn’t be surprised when their dentist suggests treatment other than a prescription. “Dentists are already subject to regulation to ensure prescriptions can be justified. What we don’t have is a contract that provides adequate time for dentists to treat emergency cases. So we call on the government to recognise the real threat of AMR and factor this into any reformed package. “This danger presented by antibiotic resistance requires a change in gear from practitioners, patients and policymakers. The simple message is we can’t go on as we are, and the dental profession is stepping up and taking a lead.” [1]http://www.nice. org.uk/news/article/

General News DENTISTS’ CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE OF NHS DENTISTRY HITS A NEW LOW

A

staggering 95% of dental professionals (NHS Providers and Performers) working within the NHS who responded to the most recent NHS Confidence Monitor have stated that they are less confident in the future of NHS dentistry than they were 12 months ago. Over 300 NHS dental professionals completed the second NHS Confidence Monitor, a comprehensive industry survey conducted on behalf of Practice Plan, sharing their views about the future of NHS dentistry. The aim of this on-going survey, which will take place every six months, is to gain insight into the profession’s confidence levels in NHS dentistry over the coming months and provide a snapshot of the mood of the profession going forward. The NHS Confidence Monitor

also revealed that dentists are very worried about their own future, with 90% of respondents saying they are less confident about their career prospects within NHS dentistry going forward than they were a year ago. Confidence levels are also at a shocking low in terms of dentists’ ability to offer their patients the right balance of treatment versus prevention in times to come under the NHS, with 85% of respondents expressing fears that the balance won’t be right. 94% of respondents said they had lost confidence that practising dentistry within the NHS will offer an appropriate level of remuneration in the future, serving as a worrying statistic for the Government since this is suggestive of staffing shortages in times ahead if dental professionals choose to leave NHS practice.

It also seems that there is little confidence that dental teams will be able to work effectively within the NHS framework as time progresses, with 89% feeling less confident on this matter than they did in the previous 12 months. Perception of patient satisfaction is also at a worrying low, with over three-quarters (77%) of respondents lacking confidence that patients will be happy with the outcome of attending an NHS dental practice in the future, when compared to 12 months ago. Commenting on the results, Eddie Crouch,Vice Chair of the Birmingham Local Dental Committee, stated: ‘I think it’s worrying that so many people have become markedly more despondent since the last survey. I think it’s partly anticipatory and partly because the issue appears to be so

3

low down the Government’s list. ‘It seems a sad state of affairs and we can only hope that results such as these will persuade the powers that be to look at the situation anew in consultation with representatives of the profession.’ Each NHS Confidence Monitor survey will be followed up with a forum of key opinion leaders, dentists and dental professionals to explore the results in greater depth and place them in context. The next forum is scheduled for October 2015, after which the group’s opinions on the survey results will be made available to the dental profession in the UK. In the meantime, to see the full results or for further information on the NHS Confidence Monitor, please visit www.NHSDentistryInsights. co.uk.

The charity has also provided a custom-made DentaidBag to carry the dental chair making it easier to reach remote communities. And in Uganda Dentaid has supported several community outreach projects where dentists have performed extractions, fillings, scaling and preventative treatments in addition to children’s teeth screening in schools. With more volunteering trips planned to Uganda, Zimbabwe and Kenya next year and a busy programme of fundraising activities, Dentaid has many opportunities for British dental professionals to support its work. nternational dental charity Dentaid is working on projects across Africa, bringing relief to people who are suffering due to a lack of dental care. In the last month the charity, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary next year, has sent a team of dental professionals to Uganda, two DentaidBoxes to Burkina Faso, and continued to support projects in Uganda and Kenya. During the two-week volunteering trip to Uganda, the team will treat hundreds of adults and children who have no access to dental care. Their trip includes running clinics in the slums of Jinja and working in remote rural locations running oral health education projects and treating people in pain. Dentaid has also sent two DentaidBoxes - entire dental surgeries that fit into a wheelie bin and can be operated without water or electricity - to Burkina Faso. The delivery was initially delayed by the thwarted military coup but the boxes are now on their way to the capital Ouagadougou so they can be used in clinics. The boxes were kindly sponsored by the Exeter BDA Section and the Rotary Club

WEARING MORE THAN A NEW SCHOOL UNIFORM

W

ith the new school year just around the corner, there’s a good chance some of your younger patients may well be exhibiting stress-related symptoms, including grinding and clenching that will cause wear beyond that which we would expect for their age. Given the potential to affect their oral health for a lifetime – especially once the permanent dentition starts to erupt – this is an issue that needs to be tackled as quickly as possible. Signs and symptoms associated with bruxism in children might include changes to their facial symmetry, inability of the lips to form an adequate seal, pain in the area of the masseter or temporalis muscles upon palpation, headaches and earaches, dentine sensitivity, and temporomandibular disorders, as well as anterior and posterior cross bites and tooth wear. If a child presents with warning signs that may be attributed to bruxism, it will be helpful to ensure he/she is brushing effectively yet gently with a relatively soft toothbrush and a toothpaste that is low in abrasivity, as well as suggesting they

do something relaxing before bed such as reading or having a bath. In addition, a soft mouthguard to be worn at night may be customised to prevent further damage to the dentition, which will need to be changed regularly for younger patients as the child and their teeth develop. The London Tooth Wear Centre® offers an evidence-based and comprehensive approach to managing tooth wear. To request advice, make a referral or for further information on the work of the London Tooth Wear Centre®, please visit www.toothwear.co.uk, email info@toothwear.co.uk or call 020 7486 7180.

URGENT ACTION NEEDED TO TACKLE WORRYINGLY LOW LEVELS OF MORALE AMONGST DENTISTS, WARNS BDA

U

rgent action is needed, the BDA has said, after a new repor t published reveals morale amongst dentists working on the high street across the UK is shockingly low, with dentists based in Northern Ireland faring worst of all. Data from the HSCIC Dental Working Hours, 2012/13 & 2013/14 Motivation Analysis highlights low levels of morale amongst dentists throughout the UK, but dentists in Northern Ireland appeared to be most concerned about their working conditions. Poor morale in Northern Ireland was linked to working longer hours, carrying out more Health Service and administrative work and taking less leave. Commenting on the findings, the chair of the BDA’s Northern Ireland Dental Practice Committee, Peter Crooks, said:

“These figures are shocking but unfortunately they come as no surprise to those working in the dental profession. “They echo findings from the BDA’s own research, which found that low morale and motivation was linked to heavy workloads, excessive administration, increasing bureaucracy, regulatory burdens and rising expenses. “The BDA believes this is an escalating situation which requires action now. “Dentists work hard to deliver high quality care to their patients but it must not be at the cost of burn-out for dentists. “The government must recognise the heavy demands placed upon general dental practitioners and start addressing the causes of poor morale – it’s vital for the good of everyone’s health.”

DENTAID APPEALS FOR DENTISTS TO HELP IN CALAIS MIGRANT CRISIS

I

nternational charity Dentaid is appealing for dentists who are registered to practice dentistry in France to provide essential treatment for thousands of migrants living in refugee camps near Calais. One of the charity’s trustees, Jonathan Gollings, has recently returned from France where he saw

the desperate need for dental care in the camps. Hundreds of people, including many children, are suffering dental pain after travelling across Europe to find work or flee war and persecution. Many have serious dental problems with an average of eight people a day arriving with an abscess. French law states that any dentist

who works in the camps must be registered in the country and have permission to practice in Calais. Dentaid is now appealing for any UK dentists who registered to practice in France, or French dentists, to volunteer their skills. Dentaid provides equipment and DentaidBoxes – entire dental

surgeries that fit into a wheelie bin and can be operated without electricity and water - to countries all over the world were people are suffering due to a lack of dental care. The charity also sends teams of volunteer dental professionals to Asia, Africa and South America – but is now keen to help closer to home in the wake of the migrant crisis and provide emergency dentistry for those in pain. “We have been approached because there is a desperate need for dentistry in the refugee camps at Calais,” said strategic director of Dentaid, Andy Evans. “We are hoping we can find a team of dentists who are registered to practice in France so we can make a real difference. Dentaid is a charity that is committed to eradicating dental pain all over the world whatever people’s circumstances are.” Dentists who have permission to practice in France and particularly the Calais region are asked to contact Dentaid on 01794 324249. To find out more about the charity visit www. dentaid.org.

HEALTHY LIVING, FRESH BREATH AND CONFIDENCE

VOLUME 2 ISSUE 4

l

Y

oung people have a tendency to focus on appearance as evidence of worthiness. They often ignore other abilities and compare their appearance with models, actors and celebrities depicted in advertising and the media. Although these images are frequently unrealistic and can sap a person’s confidence, there is and always will be a certain amount of pressure to look good. These attitudes are reflected in research published last year, which revealed that almost half (47%) of young adults agree with the statement ‘how you look affects what you can achieve in life and around one-third (32%) of those aged 18-34 agreed with the statement ‘your value as a person depends on how you look’. Due to the importance of looking good, the younger generation look after their bodies, hair and skin more than ever before. Men in particular are now more interested in beauty and grooming as shown by a 70% increase over the past six years in product launches targeted at men . Similarly, in the highly competitive professional world there is also a certain amount of pressure for individuals to look their best in order to gain employment or progress successfully. Although this may all seem very superficial, there is still much to commend about this generation’s attitudes towards fitness and wellbeing. In general, the younger generation has a healthy disposition and

research conducted over the last decade reveals that an increasing proportion of youngsters eat fruit and vegetables, are physically active on a daily basis, rate their health as excellent, practice safe sex, and live free of tobacco and cannabis. There is also a decline in those that drink alcohol weekly and gym use has increased threefold in a generation. The consequences are that young adults are now more inclined to take regular exercise than people were 30 years ago and 48% of 16-24 year olds use a fitness app on a regular basis. Special diets that focus on organic, lactose and dairy-free foods have trebled in popularity over a generation, but conversely, young adults are placing much less emphasis on their oral health. According to statistics, the number of people that visited an NHS dentist in England has fallen since 2013. Furthermore, the highest prevalence of decay on the crowns of the teeth was found in adults aged 25 to 34. This would indicate that although young adults seem to be better informed and enthusiastic about their general health and fitness, some are neglecting to look after their teeth. The condition of the teeth significantly affects a person’s appearance and cracked, missing, stained or unhygienic teeth look unhealthy and unattractive. Along with this, untreated dental problems, a build up of plaque and

periodontal disease are common causes of oral malodour, which can lead to a lack of confidence and social withdrawal. As we know, the health of the mouth has a significant impact on the general wellbeing of the body and effective oral hygiene is required to preserve it. When speaking to young patients, dental professionals need to reinforce the message and encourage them to take their oral health just as seriously as every other aspect of their fitness. Along with effective tooth brushing and interdental cleaning, it is wise to recommend a mouth rinse to keep breath smelling fresh. With the hectic lifestyle that many young people lead, CB12 mouth rinse can be used as a convenient daily oral deodorant to prevent bad breath. Just one shot begins working instantly and its unique, patented formula adheres to the tissues of the oral cavity to eliminate unpleasant breath for up to 12 hours. Many of your patients may experience dry mouth during

a workout or ‘ketone breath’ if they are following a specific diet, but CB12 has the solution. As well as the rinse, CB12 Boost is a sugar-free chewing gum that can be used to freshen and invigorate the breath after meals and throughout the day. CB12 products have been developed by dentists and contain specific ingredients to reduce plaque, strengthen teeth and prevent cavities so you can empower young patients to look after their oral health with confidence. Although the younger generation seem to be very savvy about health and fitness the power is still in your hands. By encouraging your patients to take their oral health seriously and to incorporate a regular oral deodorant into their routine, you can enhance their confidence and ensure first class breath, all day, every day. Restorative Materials GLASS CARBOMER SHOWING AT BDIA DENTAL SHOWCASE 2015 ON STAND B145 G lass Carbomer from GCP represents a new generation restorative material developed from glass ionomer cements augmented with nano fluor/ hydroxyapatite and silicon oil. This development provides enhanced remineralisation, hardness, flexural strength, reduced solubility properties coupled with excellent biocompatibility. Glass Carbomer速 technology is the result of over a decade of scientific and clinical research from teams at Amsterdam University and Queen Mary College, London. Come and see the products on Stand B145 at BDIA Dental Showcase 2015. GCP utilises biomimetic natural re-mineralising processes to help rebuild the tooth to resemble its original structure. These are

developed through mineral release from nano-sized particle fluoridealuminium-silicate glass supported by liquid silica to provide greater stability and resistance to solubility. Additionally the materials contain fluor/ hydroxyapatite crystals as seeds upon which calcium and phosphate ions can concentrate and reinforce the restoration over time. GCP bonds directly to tooth structure, providing excellent marginal adaption, and is not sensitive to moisture. Its strength is optimised using light generated thermocure to accelerate the cross-linking of the polymer chains. The use of GCP Gloss (liquid silica) prevents desiccation during curing and also to prevent adhesion to instruments, matrices and gloved fingers. The elastic silicon protection can be applied rapidly by one person in seconds. It self-stabilizes, holds without clamps, and provides the Dentist with a dry working area with an unobstructed view and easy access thanks to its small size. At the same time, the latexfree aid gives the patient reliable, comfortable protection from harmful substances. For further information visit www. dmg-dental.com

EW DMG MiniDam delivers a simple and practical solution to providing effective gingival protection between adjacent teeth, whilst treating them for interproximal caries using Icon Proximal. Caries treatment is often unpleasant for the patient and time-consuming for the Dentist. Using Icon, the caries can be halted at an early stage, quickly, effectively, and without any pain. If this clinically proven process is combined with DMG MiniDam silicon protection, carious lesions in the proximal area can be treated in an even more patient-friendly manner, and with less difficulty for the Dentist. The small, easily-applied gingival protection assures a dry and easily-accessible

P

eople are living longer, but a longer life doesn’t always mean a healthier life. People who live longer will have more complicated healthcare needs and the demand for formal care is likely to spiral too. You can lose a tooth through an accident at any age, of course, but there is still much to be done to improve the standard of the UK’s oral care. The latest Adult Dental Health Survey found that dentate adults had an average of just 17.9 sound and untreated teeth. The Survey also found that only 10% of dentate adults had ‘excellent’ oral health (21 or more natural teeth, 18 or more sound and untreated teeth and roots, no decay, no periodontal pocketing of 4mm or more, no loss of attachment of 4mm or more and no calculus or bleeding). Past generations accepted the likelihood that they would lose some, or all of their teeth as part of the ageing process, but removable dentures tend to have a negative image. As an effective modern alternative, implant technology has been refined and treatment is quicker, more efficient and pleasant for the patient. To make implant treatment a long-term success, though, patients have to practice good pre and posttreatment care. A study published last year demonstrated the clinical results of an implant case evaluated 12 years post-treatment. The patient originally presented with periodontal disease, decay and a history of trauma and diabetes. Multiple extractions were required before the patient was fitted with implant-retained bar overdentures. The study found that good oral hygiene was needed in order to

ensure a successful result. The oral hygiene routine needs to be effective, as well as simple and comfortable enough to perform twice a day, for maximum compliance. Limiting sugary foods, drinks and alcohol and not smoking will contribute to all-round good health as well as helping patients to avoid caries and stained teeth. Many dentists recommend an interdental brush to clean the small spaces between the teeth. However, it is important not to use ones with a metal wire that can scratch restorations and cause a fissure in which bacteria can grow, increasing the risk of plaque build up and gingivitis. People of all ages have a tendency

to avoid tasks they find difficult or tiresome, and this may have lead to the most recent Adult Dental Health survey finding that only a quarter of 25-64 year olds use dental floss in the UK. There is also little evidence to show that flossing has any significant effect on reducing plaque and gingival inflammation. However, patients of all ages will find the Water Flosser easy to use. It is gentle enough for those with implants or orthodontic appliances. Studies on the Waterpik® Water Flosser show its preponderance over floss for reducing bleeding, gingivitis and plaque.9 The Waterpik® Water Flosser also eliminates up to 99.9% of

plaque biofilm from treated areas in three seconds. Efficient oral hygiene is critical for implant treatment to succeed. Although age will affect people’s ability to look after themselves, with all the adjuncts to brushing available today, there is no reason why any patient should suffer the pain, inconvenience and expense of failing implants. For more information on Waterpik® Water Flossers please speak to your wholesaler or visit www.waterpik.co.uk. Waterpik® products are widely available in Boots and Superdrug stores

regular visitor to the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed and with a passion for cars and racing, it is no surprise that after completing an Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from Portsmouth University, Glenn Mason combined both these interests ending up re-trimming vintage and classic cars for a living. When this trade was badly hit by the recession in the eighties Glenn was fortunate enough to be asked by his dentist whom he had been visiting since primary school, to upholster his chairs. So delighted with the quality of Glenn’s workmanship, he offered to help him by paying for an advert in a British dental journal and it wasn’t long before dental upholstery became Glenn’s full time profession. With over 30 years of experience, Glenn, who lives and has his workshop in Horsham, West Sussex, continues

to use his long honed skills of dental upholstery and his meticulous attention to detail to help practices up and down the country and still enjoys each new project. “I am extremely pleased with an Adec 500 I recently upholstered as, although it’s one of their more recent models, it actually requires traditional upholstery skills. It wasn’t a matter of pulling and glueing or stapling as per the smooth and easy to wipe down dental chairs I’ve been used to over recent years. It was a very satisfying experience.” Clearly with so many years of upholstering only dental chairs and accessories, Glenn is extremely adaptable, inventive and highly capable of overcoming any new challenges that may arise through the developments of dental chair manufacturing and design. Glenn’s vast experience also

enables him to identify and inspect damage via images sent by email and text so that he can just travel to carry out the work. Using only the best materials as used by the chair manufacturers, Glenn provides a highly professional bespoke service, tailored to meet each dentist’s individual needs and to fit around their busy schedules. For some chairs he is able to offer a same-day service and for some models the downtime can be as little as 10 minutes. If chairs aren’t able to be refurbished on site and for bigger jobs, Glenn happily works over weekends personally travelling to collect and deliver work in the South East and London. For jobs further afield he has regularly worked and maintains a good working relationship with the same courier company for over 20 years now.

“We are very pleased with the quality of the naugahyde material which is excellent. The quality of workmanship is also first class. Quite apart from the quality, you made the whole process smooth and stress free from arranging the initial collection of the panels through to making sure that they were back in good time.” Edward Byrne - Dental Surgeon

HANDPIECES: INVEST WISELY

VOLUME 2 ISSUE 4

Y

ou get the handpiece you pay for. Handpieces are not always what they were or what they are promoted to be. With poor quality cheap copies, substandard, counterfeit or illegal products easily available on the internet and some suppliers looking to reduce costs both in the UK and elsewhere, you may not be getting appropriate product quality and service. Purchasing high quality handpieces from reputable suppliers, gives peace of mind that the product meets all the necessary regulatory requirements and will not endanger user or patient. Purchasing cheaper options is a risk and can cost more in the long run, possibly proving more serious than at first expected or even risking punitive action. Handpieces are precision instruments which operate at very high speeds, so must hold an official CE mark, certifying them fit for purpose. Those sold on the internet may show a similar mark but may well not be officially certified or tested fit for use. Look carefully at the regulations regarding the use of products which have not met official UK standards as there may be implications beyond just the quality of the product. As your most hardworking tool, it is important to buy the right handpiece, don’t stake a professional reputation on cheap, poor quality copies. Handpieces are designed for specific indications aiding clinicians in working for optimal results so using the right handpiece ensures clinical success. Why is it so important to choose your handpieces wisely? Specialist manufacturers such as W&H invest heavily in research and development offering KNOW&HOW to ensure continuing development of high quality innovative handpieces, designed for maximum performance and efficiency. To maximize your investment, choose quality handpieces manufactured and tested to consistently high standards and made from superior materials for top performance, efficiency and product longevity. Make sure you know exactly what you are buying and from whom. Technological developments have increased the power and torque of handpieces improving performance, speed and stability. To protect handpieces from wear and tear W&H have developed new scratch-resistant surface coatings. LED lights provide better visibility and have long service life, especially when incorporated in the coupling. Noise and vibration levels have also decreased which brings benefits for the dental team and patient alike.

The dental profession should be looking to gain the best possible value from the new handpiece innovations which improve their working environment especially as they are a long term investment with high user interaction. Handpiece selection is critical as it needs to suit the user. Dental professionals look to offer patients quality care, which comes from using high quality, reliable products, while remembering that one spends many hours per day holding a handpiece so make sure that it is comfortable to use. Choose handpieces based on the influence they will have on patients, user and team, for example a smaller handpiece head, reduced noise level and vibration all result in greater comfort for both practitioner and patient. W&H quality handpieces are ergonomically designed to be lightweight and easy to grip with gloved hands, enhancing the comfort when in use and reducing the risk of repetitive strain injuries and cumulative trauma disorders. Handpiece lumination has improved beyond recognition with the advent of LED. W&H LED+ handpieces daylight grade lumination is kinder on your eyes, gives improved visibility, better colour definition and reduced heat. Discovering unexpected solutions to irritating problems, like part of the treatment site being in the shadow of the bur, is always a welcome surprise, the award winning Synea Vision range offers a 5-outlet LED+ optic ring for 100% shadow-free illumination. Good quality handpieces, made by good quality manufacturers like W&H are easy to recognise and should be supplied with at least a one-year warranty as standard. It has been proven over many years of research that the higher the quality of the handpiece, the superior the performance over longer periods of time so invest wisely and looking after your investment. If the handpiece or manufacturer chosen does not meet the above criteria, then it is not likely to offer long-term value for money. Prolong the useful life of your handpieces and protect both the patient and the team from the risk of cross contamination, by following a strict infection control regime. As with any high precision instrument, regular correct cleaning, oiling and general maintenance is critical. Handpieces are exposed to extreme temperatures, high power use, pressure, chemical solutions and mechanical and clinical debris, so caring for and maintaining them according to the manufacturers’ guidelines ensures the optimum efficiency, performance and life span

of the product. Only purchase handpieces that adhere to current regulations for health and safety and those that are both thermo-washer disinfectable and sterilizable. When selecting handpieces, it is worth identifying whether the manufacturer can meet all your needs, including offering a full range of products, UK based local service support, care and maintenance training and the appropriate solutions for decontamination. There are a number of automatic handpiece care systems, like the Assistina 3X3, the most thorough handpiece cleaning system currently available, providing fast and effective cleaning inside and out and consistent automatic lubrication of all internal components. So we advise that before purchasing ask your local representative for a

handpiece demonstration to assess its comfort and performance. Make sure you receive assistance in selecting the right products to suit your individual needs. Discuss the best method of funding your purchase, asking about finance including rental schemes such as the one offered by W&H with no unexpected maintenance costs and tax, budgeting and cash flow benefits. Remember, you get what you pay for so it is always worthwhile making a sound investment and purchasing a well-established, well supported brand known for quality and reliability.
