As the year ends, you are likely starting the process of looking into a marketing strategy for the next year
Currently, 34% of small businesses outsource marketing
and that number is expected to boom in 2023. So let’s say you come across a company that you think will work well with your business style and meets the expectations you had set what next?
The leaves are falling and you can almost hear the sleigh bells ringing. As exciting as the holiday season may be, there are many people out there that this season is far from merry and bright. It has been a tough year for many with increased prices on almost everything you buy. This is just one reason why West Bank values giving back to others, especially during this holiday giving season. The West Bancorporation Foundation awards gives out a variety of grants each quarter to organizations that focus on human service, education, and arts & culture This year West Bank has granted over $213,761 to non profit organizations Giving to organizations that recognize the importance of building strong communities is an important part of West Bank’s mission There are many deserving organizations out there but it is important to make sure your charitable giving is going to the right place. Here are 4 things to remember when donating money this giving season
Do your research: There are many organizations that make claims about their organization that might not be true. Some establishments claim that all of their proceeds go to the cause they are promoting. It is important to do your research to see how much of your donation goes directly to the mission or if it is helping pay overhead costs. Before giving your money to any organizations, make sure you get details on how your money will be spent.
Pay with debit card or check: There are many payment options out there, but when it comes to donating to charities, make sure you are using a form of payment you can easily track. Smart options are debit card, credit card or check. Wire transfers, gift cards, and cash are not as safe. If the charitable organization is legitimate, they will not require donations via gift cards or wire transfers.
Don’t give out personal information too quickly: Before giving any personal information to a charity, double check it is going to the correct place. Legitimate charities will not ask for information like your social security number or bank account number.
The West Bancorporation Foundation, Inc. (the Foundation) was founded in 2004 to grant funds to nonprofit organizations in the communities we serve in the areas of Human Services, Education and Arts & Culture. ‘Tis the season for giving and receiving I know having two children, we get a lot of stuff this time of year. Even if you do not have children, it can be easy to accumulate a lot of extra things that may not bring you much joy. That is why I love to share with others that giving the gift of experience is the way to go! There are many great experiences to gift to friends and family that live in Des Moines I am sharing some of our favorites.

As we roll into the Fall things are progressing forward on the Economic Development committee. I am excited to serve as Co Chair of this group alongside Daniel Willrich's continued leadership. I will be assisting with some of the administrative and communication functions of the committee
We are now turning our attention toward the Columbus Park area of Des Moines. At our last committee meeting Pam and Bill Thompson were able to provide us with some important history of the “Sevastopol” area of Des Moines
Our committee members plan to attend some neighborhood meetings to gather input on community wants and needs. This process will be an invaluable part of assisting with possible future development efforts in this part of Des Moines.
We are planning a neighborhood meet and greet (aka charette) sometime after the start of the new year It will be set up in a similar fashion to the one we recently hosted in the Grand View area (East 9th and Hull) The date and location will be announced at a later date.
If you have any questions or would like to participate in our committee work, please let me know at nocoastconsulting@gmail.com

The U.S. Small Business Administration just announced that $20 million in grant funding has been awarded to state international trade agencies throughout the country via a competitive application process to SBA’s State Trade Expansion Program grant program. Locally, the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) earned$250,000 of that pool to help provide small businesses with the information and tools they need to succeed in export related activities. Exporting activities include: participating in foreign trade missions, market sales trips, designing international marketing campaigns, participating in export trade show exhibits, and attending training workshops, as well as other important means of engagement. This year marks the 10th year of the STEP funding, which has awarded over $215 million to date. Since 95% of the world's consumers and two thirds of all purchasing power are located outside the United States, this grant program plays a critical role in providing access to capital, access to markets, and access to buyers
If you would like to learn more about the program go to www.SBA.gov/STEP. For information on how IEDA will leverage this year ’ s STEP funding, visit www iowaeda com/international trade/financial assistance

The FuseDSM Monthly Luncheon will typically be held on the 2nd Thursday of every month. Each month the Chamber invites a dynamic speaker to provide timely information affecting our community, insight on issues concerning the community, or inspirational stories which resonate within the community. There is networking time prior to the start of the program and lunch being served. This is the monthly event you do not want to miss to maintain those important relationships with your fellow members.
Networking has taken some interesting turns over the last couple years. People are still connecting and finding ways to get business done both in person and online. With the release of the second edition of his book "The Ties that Bind: Networking with Style", Danny Beyer takes a dive at what has changed in networking and how to create lasting relationships in the digital world.

Personal branding is not your resume, and it's not even your photo or color choices, though these can certainly help create visual consistency.
Your personal brand can be communicated through how you show up in your various spaces.
With podcasting, that's your voice (of course), but also your message, who you invite onto your show, and how you welcome guests. It's in how you present your episodes on social media.
In this talk, Sarah Davis, podcast producer, coach and CEO of The Connected Podcaster, will describe what a personal brand is and how podcasting can enhance it. She'll share how identifying her personal brand helped her find her voice, connect with the community and create authentic stories to share through her podcast, as well as how other podcasters do this.
Enjoying the holiday season and staying on track with your health goals can feel complicated especially when attending holiday gatherings chocked full of delicious treats. You may have seen the increasingly popular butter board trend this holiday season. So how can you take this trend and amplify the nutrition? Hy-Vee registered dietitians are here to breakdown how to build a more nutrient-dense board perfect to share at your holiday gathering and help keep you on track with your health goal
1.Start at the base: Choose a more nutrient dense base such as Greek yogurt, nut butter or hummus all of which contain protein to help fill you up faster and help with blood sugar management.
2.Top it wisely: Toppings used on your board should be as eye-catching as they are nutritious! Choose toppings such as fruit or vegetables to add a pop of color along with vitamins, minerals and fiber to help keep you full longer and prevent rapid spikes in your blood sugar. For that satisfying crunch consider adding nuts. Containing healthy fats, fiber and protein, nuts make for a nutritional powerhouse of a topping! Finally, use spices and herbs to flavor your board without the salt shaker; this helps keep sodium in check and achieve better blood pressure control.
3.Select what to serve with it: Boards such as these need something to use to gather up all that delicious dip! Choose fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains all packed with fiber to help with appetite control and prevent you from overindulging on all the other holiday treats!

The holidays can be stressful But only if we chose them to be that way
Last year, around this time, I was going full speed and not looking forward to the end of the month I had just completed an extensive emotional intelligence training that challenged me and inspired me personally and professionally. Energized by the new tools and ideas I had, I was was ready to put them into action. My speaking business was growing rapidly and I was fielding daily inquiries for events. While it is no secret that I love my family and adore the traditions I keep with them, my mind and focus were primarily focused on my career
The thought of shopping, decorating and blocking off intentional time for the family was a bit off putting I wanted to keep the momentum I had going The first two weeks of December I was waking up early and staying up late to make sure that all of my professional and personal obligations were fulfilled. I was physically tired and bitter about my fatigue, thinking that slowing down would be a dreadful interruption to what I was creating.
And then, fate intervened
After more than a year of precautions and keeping myself healthy, I came down with COVID Thankfully, I did not have any long term impacts, and my symptoms didn’t last longer than a few days But those few days of symptoms knocked me out. The only thing I had energy for was pressing buttons on a remote.
For the first time in 2021, I was a couch potato. I binged some of my favorite TV shows and watched movies I had meant to watch. And yet, there was this lingering sense of guilt. I should be writing content I should be responding to emails I should be revising my speeches And so in the midst of my relaxation and healing, I also mixed in a good dose of shame and blame
While I would never wish COVID on anyone, those few days were a huge notice moment for me and an incredible blessing Why did I feel guilty for spending a few days detaching my mind and my body from the intensity of my world and my life? Don’t we work hard so that we can afford the days to detach and relax and unwind?
As we head into what is meant to be a refreshing time in our lives, many of us choose to make this time extra stressful and packed. Now, there is no avoiding some of the work responsibilities we get to accomplish and we get to fulfill our commitments to our family. But what if we did that without adding extra guilt to either of those aspects of our lives?
What if we gave ourselves permission to be a coach potato for a day or two? I know that is contrary to the language of rigor and excellence of our professional (and often times personal) work life And yes, we do get many messages on social media and beyond about self care; but how often do we make self care an Instagram worthy event instead of actually giving ourselves permission to well, do nothing?
If no one has given you permission to do so, let me be the first one to do so: It is okay to be lazy In fact, it will probably be very productive for you to do so Those days on the couch, while I was in physical pain, did so much for my mental clarity
Your brain has been working on overdrive all year, so why not give that mind a vacation? Why not block off time where you will have no agenda, no expectations, and…no results or outcomes? Why not find your favorite (maybe even brainless) televsion show, romance novel, comic book, or comedy special and just let yourself relax?
I challenge you to do that and recharge yourself for what is to come in 2023 If you are anything like me (and if you are reading this, you are!), you have big goals and big projects coming up Don’t worry They will be there, as will the stress that is associated with them Instead of stress, let’s chose detachment Or in other words, let’s choose to turn our brains off and rest for a bit before we go big
That’s a choice that may seem stressful but will actually alleviate the stress of the holidays. And one that will make your time more enjoyable, beneficial, and, of course, memorable.
Jayinary Owner Jessica Fane worked a variety of jobs before her knack for painting rooms evolved into an LLC. Once she began to advertise to friends and family, word of mouth helped people find her business, which she does part time in between caring for her kids, subbing at a local school, working as a banquet server with Hilton and volunteering as President of the Polk City Friends of the Parks. Because projects require prepping and a large amount of mental energy and Fane is a perfectionist she never wants Jayinary to be a full-time gig, but it’s a creative outlet that she loves to lose herself in for a short time. Fane tries to finish designs within one day, giving 100% to this particular creative outlet turned side hustle.
Jayinary clients pick out projects, then Fane goes back and forth with them on any alterations, colors, etc. She brings her equipment to finish the project during the week, getting started by drawing on the wall or, sometimes, using projection to get the design drawn out. For Fane, the opportunity to be solely involved in one project and seeing a design come to life, along with the positive client feedback she receives, is what keeps her going. The flexibility of owning her own business also allows her to create the kind of life that’s indispensable to her at this stage.
Fane suggests other entrepreneurs reach out to those in their life who can provide support in their entrepreneurial journey. For her, that meant asking a friend about accounting. In another instance, she had a project come in that needed her to paint an ombre design. Since she hadn’t done this before, she watched videos online to see how to create the design she needed and was able to complete the project by taking the time to learn new skills.
As Fane continues her journey with Jayinary, she has learned to set limits with how she spends her time and works to explain how to ready a room pre project completion to her clients. At every project, she learns something new that she can alter for the next time. Currently, she is talking with businesses about painting designs and with home builders about completing designs for clients prior to their moving into their newly purchased home. When it comes to Jayinary, Fane is excited to have recently joined the Polk City Chamber of Commerce and tap into the local entrepreneur community so she can continue to put herself out there and find new projects to put her expertise to work.
