Introducing Myself and Looking Forward to 2024...

Greetings,

As we embark on the journey of 2024, I am honored to introduce myself as your Board Chair for the year. My name is Michael Bird, and I serve as the CEO of Spindustry, a company dedicated to digital transformation through web development, e-commerce, digital marketing, and business automation via SharePoint. Our mission is to support businesses like yours in achieving growth and success.

I became involved with FuseDSM just before the onset of the pandemic, driven by a passion for expanding our organization and fostering connections within the manufacturing industry. While it's not always the typical focus for chambers, manufacturing companies play a vital role in our state's economy and communities. By bridging the gap between these companies and our members, we can create significant economic and community impact together. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, I'm thrilled by the progress of our MakeDSM program, designed to support manufacturers, and I invite you to reach out if you have any questions or know of manufacturers who could benefit from participation.

We kicked o the year with our annual dinner, a truly remarkable event that showcased the collective love and dedication we all share for the Des Moines community. The energy and enthusiasm in the room were palpable, serving as a testament to our collective potential to e ect positive change.

Looking ahead, we have a lineup of exciting events, including TOSS on June 6th. This event promises not only delectable food but also ample opportunities to showcase your business and network with fellow members.

As we navigate through 2024, I encourage each of you to seize the opportunities to connect, engage, and participate in FuseDSM events. Your involvement is key to our collective success, and I am eager to hear your ideas and feedback on how we can continue to serve you better. Together, let's make 2024 a year of growth, collaboration, and shared achievements.

Warm regards

From Airlines to Putting Greens: A Story of Reinvention

Many of you know me as Angela Dolecheck, but you might not know my story. For 16 years, I thrived in the fast-paced world of aviation at United Airlines. Life took an unexpected turn in 2014, and I found myself needing a new runway. Little did I know that runways would lead me to miniature golf courses, giggling children, and a business built on bringing joy to others – Pop Up Games!

Inspiration Strikes: From Abandoned Lots to Portable Fun

While attending Simpson College, I was part of an entrepreneurial group. One challenge was to develop a business idea. Driving by a vacant lot daily, I envisioned a mini golf course and go-cart track. While the scale was a bit ambitious, the seed of Pop Up Games was sown. Focusing on portability, I secured donated materials and built the first iteration using PVC pipes. "Pop Up Games" was born, reflecting our ability to bring the fun anywhere!

From Graduation to Growth: Spreading Smiles One Event at a Time

After graduating in 2018, Pop Up Games became my full-time adventure. Trading PVC for pool noodles and incorporating recycled toys, I've brought smiles to countless events – birthdays, festivals, fundraisers, and more. Even a global pandemic couldn't stop the fun! Yard games became a popular addition, and the joy on kids' faces continues to be my biggest motivator.

FuseDSM: Faning the Flames of Entrepreneurship

In 2020, I joined FuseDSM – Your Chamber of Commerce. Initially, I thought membership alone would spread the word. Quickly realizing there was more to o er, I connected with Trish Flaherty-Barnes and Tricia Rivas. Their encouragement ignited a fire in me! I actively participated in events, learned from experienced entrepreneurs, and became a Firestarter myself, passionate about helping other businesses grow.

The Journey Continues: Pop Up Games is Here to Stay!

Pop Up Games is more than just a business; it's about creating lasting memories and fostering connections. I'm excited for the future and the opportunity to bring even more smiles to our community. If you're looking for a fun addition to your next event, look no further!

Analyzing Anemia – What you need to know

Have you ever wondered if you’re getting the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy? Knowing if you are missing the mark or balancing essential nutrients can be challenging with so many nutrients. Many forms of anemia range from nutrient deficiencies such as iron, B12 and folate to sickle-cell anemia, hemolytic and anemias associated with chronic medical conditions. Iron deficiency anemia is the most prevalent nutrient deficiency globally1; some people are at greater risk than others. But how do you know if you are at risk for iron deficiency anemia? Your Hy-Vee registered dietitian is here to help with simple tips. Read on to learn how you can determine your risk for anemia.

Iron is an essential nutrient, meaning we must obtain it through food. Iron performs several vital bodily functions, including synthesizing hemoglobin – a key component of red blood cells that helps carry oxygen to your tissues. Hemoglobin is made of protein, copper and iron. Measuring hemoglobin reflects the body’s level of functional iron, making it a sensitive indicator for detecting iron deficiency anemia. Absent any other medical condition, normal hemoglobin levels for adult females is 12-16 g/dL and is 14-18 g/dL for adult males. Anything lower is defined as anemia, which could be due to iron deficiency, other nutritional deficiencies or other medical conditions. The RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) for iron intake varies based on the individual; from 8 mg per day for men and postmenopausal women to 11-15 mg per day for teenage boys and girls, respectively, to 18 mg per day for premenopausal women. Iron deficiency anemia symptoms may occur when we don’t obtain enough iron in the diet, including fatigue and weakness, pale skin or conjunctiva, thin spoon-shaped nails or decreased resistance to cold temperatures. Individuals at most significant risk for iron deficiency anemia include premenopausal women, young children, or people with a vegan diet, malabsorptive diseases, pregnancy, blood loss or chemotherapy. Meat is a significant source of iron that is most readily absorbed by the body – this is called heme iron. There are many plant-based or non-heme sources of iron, including iron-fortified grains, pasta made from garbanzo beans or lentils, pumpkin seeds, potato with skin, spinach and prunes. These non-heme sources of iron require strategic planning to promote optimal absorption. Dairy foods, co ee and tea should be consumed separately from iron-rich foods or supplements as these will inhibit plant-based iron absorption. Uptake of non-heme iron is enhanced by foods rich in vitamin C, including oranges, broccoli, dark leafy greens, kiwi, bell peppers, tomatoes and strawberries.
